Absolutely not. I am a strict pacifist, and I would rather let the police handle the case in the event the intruder harm me and take my belongings, than harm another being.

Being trained as a LEO (still in school so I have no experience on the streets yet, just training), when it comes to these things you really can't make that kind of choice (shoot to kill, shoot to wound). Not that you can't, it just that you want to keep things a simple as possible. LEOs are trained to shoot center mass until the target is no longer a threat. That could be firing 1 round or you could have to fire 10 rounds. Every situation is different. The primary goal in self defense situations isn't to kill (although it can save some trouble for the shooter) it is to stop the threat. Also remember that in the unfortubate situation that you have to shoot someone, most states you have to make a reasonable effort to offer medical assistance.

It depends really.

If the person had a gun and I thought he would try to harm me or my family then yes, in the name of self defense. But if the person had only a knife or some lesser weapon, the I'd probably just shoot them in the leg or something to incapacitate them until the police arrived.

I'd put a poll up on Nationstates about what I should do. I would disregard poll. When the intruder came into my room, I'd show him the topic on abortion. Or maybe evolution. I'd make my escape as he raged at the keyboard and I'd get the police.

Letting intruders leave risks letting them break into someone else's home. One should hold them at gunpoint until police arrive.

That said, if they flee, whether or not I would shoot depends on what they were up to. If they were desperate for food or shelter I would rather they get away than that they die.
