Andulia allows a wide range of items, but there are obviously limits. Dangerous substances (firearms, explosives, toxic chemicals) can only be imported by authorized state agencies, while invasive plant and animal species are banned, and regulations on drugs and alcohol are rather lax. There are restrictions on the types of printed material that may be brought in; religious pamphlets, holy texts, and literature relating to reactionary ideologies (collectively referred to as anti-social information, or ansoc) can be carried across the border, but they have to be registered with customs, and after a certain amount of ansoc material has been brought in during a year, officials will prohibit its importation until the beginning of the next year. This way there is a yearly quota on all ansoc products. In one notable instance, which caused a great deal of international controversy, Andulian Customs Bureau officials confiscated, shredded, and recycled 340,000 Bibles that were being brought in aboard a container ship by a Christian missionary group.

For the "First 13" Sector, the customs officers ban "universal pheronemones" (narcotics which affect all lifeforms), superviruses (biological or digital), and any dangerous weaponry. Some Islam-predominant sectors ban obscene material. For some semi-anarchic sectors, they don't even have customs officers.
