Tiandi Regional Sign-up Thread [OUTDATED, DON'T POST]

Postby Arumdaum » Thu Nov 10, 2016 9:59 pm

Please try to avoid general discussion in this thread.

Tiandi is the union of Heaven (天) and Earth (地), and all which they encompass.

A heavenly, celestial world located in a far-off section of the NS universe, Tiandi is home to a myriad of cultures, religions, and political systems. A rarity among NS roleplay and worldbuilding regions, it presents an alternate world in which East Asian societies came to create a new, Confucian-dominated world order.

Chat (#Tiandi)
Regional Discussion Thread

Tiandi is an MT world dedicated to realism, a planet cut off from the rest of the NS universe. One main thing differentiates Tiandi from other RP regions, and that is that in Tiandi's history, East Asian nations, rather than European nations, were the first to colonize, industrialize, and for a while dominate the globe.

Please read these considerations before making an app. Puppet nations are allowed. All apps can be accepted by either me, Sabara, or Daeseong, though I have the final say. Don't feel afraid to app! Virtually everyone who makes an app is accepted.

Barring RL circumstances, lack of activity on Tiandi IRC, IIWiki, and RP will result in the removal of your nation from the map, especially if you are still active elsewhere on NS. If you let us know, we will hold your spot for a reasonable amount of time.

  • Please refrain from creating a nation with a GDP (either nominal or PPP) of over $1.5 trillion. This doesn't mean you should try to get as close to this number as possible.
  • Please refrain from claiming a population of over 100 million people. New nations in the Sinju area or nations with a GDP per capita of over $20,000 should not have a population of over 45 million.
  • Don't ask me to create more islands for your Japanese nation in the East Sinju area.
  • No more wealthy city-states.
  • Place your claim in an area of the world that corresponds with the cultural map.
  • If your nation is not culturally East Asian, it must have been colonized.
  • European colonial offshoots (America/Canada/Australia analogues) will be rejected.
  • Only East Asian nations may currently have colonies; those colonies must be far-flung and tiny.
  • Human claims have precedence over NPCs, which are mapped in gray. Technically, every gray spot on the map is an NPC; some are just without names and stats.

Application Walkthrough

Self-explanatory.

This should be answered mainly in terms of language and ethnicity.

This refers to European-style colonization from the late 15th century on. No former European colonies. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. Only East Asian nations are allowed to have colonized in Tiandi, and virtually non-East Asian nations should have been colonized in the past. Please choose a colonizer from this list below.

The median country on Earth has 5 - 7 million people. Of course, player nations are generally allowed to have nations that are more populous than this.

GDP (PPP) is generally higher than GDP (nominal) in nations that are still developing. Please look at nations similar to how you envision your nation to be and base your numbers off of that. Very wealthy nations often have a higher nominal GDP. The median GDP (PPP) per capita for a nation on Earth is around ~$11,000, which would be a statistic for an upper middle income nation.

Non-East Asian (Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Vietnamese) or non-Sinicized are for the most part not allowed to be wealthy nations or have GDP per capitas above $25,000. Very lightly populated petrostates and a few South Asian nations are allowed to be wealthy and developed as well, but due to how being a petrostate has so often been used as an excuse here to have a wealthy nation, only a select few will be able to do so.

Look at RL numbers for similarly developed and populated nations.

The lingua franca of Tiandi is Korean. Non-European nations should not have European languages as a major language, unless due to large amounts of immigration.

Should be short. However, there should still be a decent description of what the nation is like; try to provide a general summary. Develop a decent amount but not too much without knowing all that much about this region's established canon (and especially before being accepted, haha).

Wealthy East Asian and East Asian settler nations should be for the most part liberal democracies, which the region currently has a shortage of.

Should be a yes.

My main nation on NS is Arumdaum but my nation in Tiandi is Fusen. Many people don't send their main nations into Tiandi, and it is much easier to contact people through their mains.

Is this nation going to be your main nation on NS? Is it simply going to be a puppet? Players should keep at least one nation in the region; if it CTEs, all your nations here will be removed from the map or turned into an NPC. NPCs can be used and developed by anyone, but anything major should be up to the decision of the regional leadership (Arumdaum/Sabara/Daeseong).

Provide a link to your map claim on Imgur, saved as a png and not cropped. This makes it easier for me to add it to the map. The map ratio is 81 km2 for every pixel; the RL places on the bottom right corner of the map correspond nearly exactly to how large they would be on the map. Tiandi is roughly the size of Earth, though it has more water and 20% less land area.

Coastlines and plots are negotiable. Plots are largely placeholders. You can draw up your own claim. If you do so, try to make your claim look interesting. Try not to stick to the coast or claim all the empty land in an area. Coasts are often premium territory, and so 'Chile' shaped nations that may landlock others are discouraged whereas incredibly large claims will be moderated. Culture should also play a role and consider your nation's cultural background/influences when staking a claim (second map above).

If you want, I can draw up a claim for you as well.

I would love this information for recruitment purposes.

Colonizer description

Virtually all non-East Asian countries should have been colonized at some point, similar to how Europe was able to conquer much of the world IRL. Here is a list of current colonizers and their cultures:

Jeongmi (Korean): For centuries, Jeongmi was primus inter pares among the major powers of the world, creating a massive global empire similar to that of the British, the largest the world had ever seen. The modern world's lingua franca, Jeongmian (Korean), is a testament to the size, power, prestige, and influence of that former empire, which in many ways still exists through predatory resource extraction contracts and the propping up of friendly authoritarian regimes. It is most likely that Jeongmi colonized a non-East Asian nation. Jeongmi today is a wealthy liberal democracy and a major economic and military power.

Fusen (Japanese): Fusen was another major historic colonizer. Today, Fusen is a wealthy liberal democracy and a major economic and industrial power, although it is wary of building up its military.

Gaoxiong (Taiwanese): Gaoxiong was another colonizer, thought it did not colonize to the extent of Fusen, Jeongmi, and Meisaan.

Meisaan (Cantonese): Meisaan was a major colonizer and was able to create another global colonial empire that rivaled Jeongmi. In the present, it is a major economic and military power that like Jeongmi, is a liberal democracy.

Nam Long (Vietnamese): Nam Long was another colonizer.

Zaihan (Hokkien): Zaihan was another colonizer.

Potential NPC colonizers (minor):

Fukoet (Hakka)
Hukoq (Shanghainese)
Kapuk (Hokkaido Ainu)
Paiuguok (Fuzhounese)

Authoritarian government start to weaken its grip in the late 1970s, and was completely overthrown in the 1990s. The Yashimese settling of Mishiwase is supposed to be more like the Germanic migrations or the Varangians rather than an actual colonization effort.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: formally Sukuzhin or Mishihase/informally Mishiwase (肅愼) [Mishiwase Yashimese]; Misuvashi (粛眘) [Mishiwase]
Real life culture influence: Japan (Taisho and early Showa period), Japan (Tohoku and Hokkaido), Tungusic peoples, pre-Turkic Western China
Real life culture of former colonizer:

Population: 48,910,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: $19,765
GDP (nominal) per capita: $17,326
Military manpower (active/reserve): 220,000 active, 560,000 reserve

Language(s): Mishiwase (con-dialect of Yashimese [Japanese]), Mishiwase Yashimese (Shi orthography), Kuru (pseudo-Ainu), Hichire dialects (Japonicized(?) Northern-Tungusic), Gsangyur languages (pseudo-[conservative]-Sino-Tibetan), Neo-Tianqian, Hewenira (pseudo-Nanai), Utku (pseudo-Nivkh)

Nation description:
The earliest settlements in Mishiwase were established along the Yagiru and Uruhe rivers in 2nd millenium BCE, with the vast, sparsely-populated steppes of the interior being home to various tribes and clans of nomads and pastoralists. The Bronze Age Usshuri culture, distinctive for its ashen grey pottery and ringed staffs, thrived from the mid-2nd millenium BC until its eventual decline and replacement by the Sappyou culture in the 6th century BC. The Sappyou culture is identified with the Gsangyur peoples, whose traditional attribution of the introductions of the yak and dog can be dated to c. 610 - 550 BC, and whose ancestral language possesses loanwords from Late Old Tianqian but appears to lack many terms for Iron Age technology. It is during this period that the domestication of grey sika deer and the spread of technology from Yashima and continental Jungju occurred.

During the 4th to 11th centuries, a series of large-scale migrations and invasions from Yashima occurred, many of which were from losing nations and clans during the various wars and skirmishes for dominance over the Imperial Court. Much of what is known about pre-migration period Mishiwase comes from a transcription of oral Gsangyur history found in the 10th century work written by the southern Yashimese traveller Amanji, the Returning Chronicle from the Great Sea, which attempted to document the histories and societies of both native and settler Mishiwase polities. It is within this text that the name Sukuzhin/Mishihase was first used, describing a people living in central coastal Mishiwase now commonly identified with the Hichire-speaking Chokten people. Following this period of migration was the Hanarenari period. Despite the competition between trade and discrepancy in military technique, fighting appears to have died down between the various nations, whether due to cautious mistrust or increased tolerance, and an intercourse of language and technology began. Although some Yashimese lords attempted to invade Mishiwase during its perceived stagnation, the rise of Fusen and Jeongmi ultimately ended these attempts.

This period of tranquility would be interrupted by the Conquest for Unification in 1248 by Phemnga, a warlord and shaman born of the Gsangyur Tsengrup clan to a Hewenira mother. While fearsome on the battlefield, Phemnga was also renowned for his benevolence towards his prisoners and his tolerance and encouragement of regional cultures and religions. The Tsengrup dynasty's rule over Mishiwase gradually weakened due to several failed wars, before descending into civil war in 1478-1501, starting what is known as the Low Tide period. Ultimately proving victorious was Takuma Nagimori (託摩和守), leader of the Takuma clan and of mixed Yashimese-Hichire ancestry, who united Mishiwase in 1565 after defeating both Saha/Sawa Morokata (佐波師賢) and Ladsnhal Khonphug. Although he controlled nearly the entirety of today's Mishiwase, he declared himself as Great King (大王) of a new Kangon dynasty (罕琿) which lasts to this day, himself later becoming known as Kangon Taiso (罕琿太祖). While Kangon Taiso tried to establish Neo-Tianqian as the official language of his new kingdom, it is under his and his descendants' rule that the Yashimese culture and language made significant influences, spreading inland and displacing Classical Gsangyur as the lingua franca.

In 1803, Kangon Eihou (永豐) declared himself Tokkwau/Tokkou Emperor (徳光高帝) of Mishiwase, and established the Imperial Secretariat, part of which has evolved into the modern state executive and legislative body, the Grand National Council, with the other half becoming the State Censorate. Today, Mishiwase is well known for, and has been both praised and criticized for, its strict but unenforceable "moral edicts" and the survival of the censorate-bureaucrat system.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Ban Pho
Real life culture influence: Thai
Real life culture of former colonizer: Jeongmi
Population:4,716,881
GDP (PPP) per capita: 5,700$
GDP (nominal) per capita:4,200$
Military manpower (active/reserve): 19,000 Active, 40,000 Reserve
Language(s): Phok (Thai), Jeongmi (Korean)
Nation description: Ban Pho was colonized by the Jeongmi during the 18th century. Most of the natives there ignored their new colonial lords, but some of the more influential natives engaged in small-scale trade with the colonizators. Some centuries passed and the colonizers lived in peace along with the natives, the Phok. In the beginning of the 19th century, uncertainties arose and what began as small scale skirmishes turned into an all out war. The Jeongmi won the war and the uprising had been crushed. As a payback, the Jeongmi enslaved the Phoki.

Nearly a century later, in 1952, the Phok had lost all their hope, but a small group of people dared to stand against the colonizers. They started a spark, the spark then turned into a fire, the fire into a revolution, and that revolution formed the colony into a country, Ban Pho. Ban Pho was and currently ruled by a benevolent communist regime, which is unintentionally nationalist.
