Dispute between Hungary and Russia over 1956 remembrance

Postby Baltenstein » Tue Oct 25, 2016 2:17 pm

Hungary has summoned the Russian ambassador over a Russian TV documentary and its portrayal of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungary's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador over reportedly disparaging remarks on Russian state media about Hungary's 1956 anti-Soviet uprising.

The ministry said Tuesday it wants to clarify that Hungary does not tolerate anyone talking "in a humiliating manner about the revolution and its heroes."

The Foreign Ministry said Russian state media described the Hungarian revolt as a "pogrom" and as the first of the "color revolutions," like Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" in 2005, implying that the United States was behind the uprising.

The opposition party Politics Can Be Different had urged the ministry to react.

Hungary is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the brief but bloody revolt, during which over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed and which prompted 200,000 Hungarians to flee their country.

The documentary also claimed that thousands of Nazis were set free during the uprising.

The ten-minute programme, which is presented personnaly by Dmitry Kiselyov, the deputy director of Russian state TV, also includes a reference to the uprising as a “pogrom”, insisting that “Nazis were let out of prisons by the thousands”. It also features Hungarian Socialist politician Szófia Havas, who says that “revolutionaries went from house to house in search of communists and Jews” and “the revolution couldn’t have broken out without groups of ex-Nazi dissenters trained by the CIA who were meant to promote a fascist-counterrevolutionary coup”.

And here I thought Big Vik and Bad Vlad had it all sorted out. I'm not surprised that Russian state TV pulls out the usual "CIA-coup" and "Fascist-Nazi" buzz words. I'm more surprised that it happened against a fellow rightwing authoritarian state with which Russia was developing friendly relations as of late.

Will this lead to a cooldown of relations between Hungary and Russia? Or will the bond of autocratic friendship endure, just like it did between Putin and Erdogan? What say ye, NSG?

I would've expected someone like Gennady Zhyuganov or some other communist bigwig in Russia making a fuss about this. Russia is not communist any more as wasn't Hungary after transitioning to Tito-esque market socialist system and the revolt was crushed by the communists. Was it a communist-made documentary or something?

Regardless, what happened should never be forgotten and instead should be learned from and the circumstances and reasoning driving the decision understood, so it can be best avoided in the future. I don't think this affects Putin's and Orban's relations much, because countries like Hungary where pro-Russian right-wing populists are in power are few. Poland is one. Serbia is pro-Russia but I don't know about populists leading it. Those come to mind. Russia needs its allies, being faced by the US and its allies in most of Europe and NATO. Putin dared to annex Crimea so I doubt he's gonna really care about offending a Hungarian opposition party.

So the Hungarian government objects to facts being broadcast rather than the fictional history they are trying to write?

Please do not. :eyebrow:

That said, I can't see how the remembrance of 1956 suddenly would be bad. To remember what the Russian soldiers did ... the bloodbath, the repression and oppression of the Soviets. To then be able to step out of the block and say you no longer repress your very own people, only to have your sovereignity again be breached by the Soviets.. I cannot honestly see how the Russian government would object to such a celebration without going through the five stages.

Putin didn't do anything, you can't blame him for these idiotic comments. He's the one who said Neo-Soviets were stupid, after all. He's smarter than this.

But no, this'll blow over. Putin likes to keep his friends around if they have something to offer, and Hungary certainly does with it's strategic position.

We were never communist. Communist state is an oxymoron.

You're confusing all of Russia with the United Russia party, which has sunk it's corrupt, ultranationalist teeth deep into the neck of the glorious motherland.

I can see how that could be confusing, though.

To be fair I did not say it was a wide belief. Just that it tends to come from within the nation's borders.

Let's be honest, "fascist" is hardly ever used in a way that isn't arbitrary these days.

Everything is "fascist" nowadays, from the asshole who stole your parking spot to your dog that just shit on your rug. Some people just see jackboots in their soup.
