Women and Selective Service

Postby Wallenburg » Wed May 06, 2015 12:32 pm

I was searching up if I could register to vote in 2016 (my 18th birthday is awfully close to election day) when I thought of how I would have to register in the Selective Service System. I then ran across this:

http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=41660

Why does the military only draft men? Do you agree with this decision (or as the article notes, a lack thereof) to exclude women from the draft? Why?

I think that this is an egregious case of sexual inequality. Whether you believe this stacked against men (risking their lives while women stay at home) or in favor of men (greater opportunity to fight for your nation, which I think is a strange argument), the sexes are being treated unequally and this has to stop. Furthermore, the US defense budget, even without the draft, nearly counts for half the entire world defense budget. If anything, we should be making drastic cuts to defense. Get rid of the draft.

While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

Yes, women should serve in the Militia to defend their rights.

Most states which forbid women to do Militia Duty also forbid women to be Freeborn Citizens.

Guns are called 'Equalisers' for a reason.

In ye olden dayes, Bows were Equalisers. Plato made his millions from saying that Amazons cut off their boobs so they could shoot with bows. Me and my friend Karin (a woman) went to archery class. Karin says "Ow." Teacher says "What's wrong?" Karin says "The string hit my boob." Teacher (a woman whith ginormous boobs) says "Stand like this." Karin learnt Archery with no problems whatever. Plato is proven to be a crock of shit.

Yes, women should be included in the Draft.
The draft will probably never be abolished, and if it were abolished, it would be re-instated the second we needed one.

Women shouldn't be included in the draft. Gay people shouldn't be included in the draft. Blacks shouldn't be included in the draft. Nobody should be included in the draft.

If we're going to keep the draft then at the very least we should cut out the discrimination.

Well, you just missed the entire point of this thread. The question is really "if a draft exists, should women be drafted as well." My answer is yes, women are perfectly capable in defending a country, as are gays, etc. Now, while I'm against the draft, some countries should keep the draft. Take Israel, for example. They're faced with the threats of rockets and bombs daily, they need conscription, the whole country is a bloody fortress. Their draft is for the best. Estonia also needs to keep their draft, what with Russia being right next door like a bear that just wants to be poked.

Would you support a law demanding that any draft which is instituted be non-discriminatory and include women as well as men?

Even if the current draft were repealed?

(So like, the law repealing the draft would include a "And if it is re-instated, it must-" clause?)

If we must have a draft than to should be a draft for all. I do not see how more candidates could be seen as a problem by anyone.

To be fair, conscription in Estonia by itself is useless; if the Russian Government got absolutely pissed at a discothèque one night and decided to invade the Baltic nations Estonia would rely on other NATO member-states. The conscripts could certainly be used but they wouldn't stop Russia.

As far as the US is concerned, the draft should be abolished.

Not really. Because even if we don't get rid of it, the less people we can draft, the less damage it can cause. I say make it as discriminatory as possible. Only people who hold a federal elected office can be drafted. There we go. That sounds nice.

I'd see it as, the more people capable of being drafted, the less likely the public is going to support a draft.
Currently, the majority of voters can choose to conscript the minority against their will. That seems to be fairly oppressive.

Hm, fair point, that, though public support for it is hardly anywhere near high.

At the moment. Situations change.
What won't change, is the ability of the majority to conscript the minority against their will, unless that majority is also subject to conscription.

Sure, but the draft is never going to be activated realistically. A conflict of the scale necessitating it would almost certainly involve nuclear weapons.
"The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said "This is mine," and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody”

Agreed: Nobody should be forced to serve against their will. However, as long as they are, then women (along with everyone else) should be required to. Equality is equality, even when it is unpleasant.

Well, when the selective service was set up, only men were allowed in the military and no-one has changed it since then. Personally, I don't think it should exist at all, but if it does, it should apply to men and women.
