Automotive Discussion thread.

Postby Soldati Senza Confini » Mon Dec 08, 2014 12:00 am

I haven't seen one of these in like ever, but given we have some motor vehicles and cars enthusiasts I decided to create one myself.

In this thread you can talk anything about cars: prices for a vehicle, which one is the best company in your opinion that manufactures vehicles, what is your preferred kind of vehicle and why, and other kinds of things related like parts, engines, and so on.

NOTE: Moderators, please, if this doesn't belong here could you move it to the respective location? It will be greatly appreciated.

To start, let's start with some questions:

Which kind of car do you drive?
What drove you to buy the car you bought (dream car, affordability, etc.)?
What do you like about your car in terms of performance or what would you like to fix/upgrade if you had the money?
Lastly, have you registered and passed the inspection of your car yet? Why or why not, and what does it require to fix so it can pass the inspection if there's an issue with it? If you have done so already did it pass with flying colors or did you have to fix anything?

I am driving a Subaru Forester 2003 and what drove me to buy the car with my dad was how affordable it was and that it is an All-Wheel Drive (I love SUVs as well.)

If there is anything I like out of my car in terms of performance is the responsiveness of the car while steering and how well-built it is for a Subaru car. It does have a lot of things going on for it, the design included, it is a beauty. The engine is great for a compact SUV and it is pretty fast and responsive, at least the one I have.

Bonus question for those who want to be brave:
Do you know which car was the most expensive car of 2014?

I have a dark gray metallic 2003 Chevy Silverado RCSB 4x4 that I purchased new. I bought it because it was a truck and because I wanted something with 4wd. I only wish I could have afforded an extended/crew cab, but I had to make a choice between that and 4wd (I picked 4wd due to the winters here in CT).

I presume you use chains or snow tires with the truck?

Also, is it still stock or have you modified it somehow?

No chains or snow tires. And I don't drive like a retard just because I have 4wd (unlike some people in my area). I just like a little extra insurance when it's slick out. And it's pretty much stock, although I wish I could afford to install headers, an electric water pump, and an electric coolant fan (to reduce hp loss due to restrictions/parasitic drag). A Hypertech tune is also something I'd like to do.

I drive an '07 Honda Civic. Least I used to. Actually, I think the last thing I drove was a '93 Newport News Aircraft Carrier.

To start, let's start with some questions:

Which kind of car do you drive?

1967 VW Bus, Westfalia SO-42

What drove you to buy the car you bought (dream car, affordability, etc.)?

I always wanted to drive one just to see what it was like so I sort of went to waste the dude selling its time, but I got around the block, pulled over, sat at the table with my roommate and went, "I'm making an offer on this car."

What do you like about your car in terms of performance or what would you like to fix/upgrade if you had the money?
Performance you say...1600 cc's of pure neck snapping 40hp...0-60 in maybe...

It's not fast, but you stop caring almost immediately. I really just want to restore it, but she's my daily driver and only car.

Lastly, have you registered and passed the inspection of your car yet? Why or why not, and what does it require to fix so it can pass the inspection if there's an issue with it? If you have done so already did it pass with flying colors or did you have to fix anything?

I've been driving that thing longer than a lot of you have been alive.

I have never met anyone who has such a classic before! My dad has told me about those VW Buses, sturdy ones they are.

Restoration would be nice, would it be expensive in a car such as that one though?

I own a 2000 Honda Civic. I currently lack an exhaust system, it's kinda loud.

As for dream cars, I've built them for the game rFactor. Both are Honda Integra DC2s.

Image
This one has a 1600cc NA engine (270hp@10700rpm), 7 speed sequential gearbox, FWD.

Image
This one has a 1800cc turbo engine (590hp@11200rpm), 7 speed sequential gear, AWD. I couldn't edit the model to include more aggressive aero, with a diffuser and front splitter, although I did add the WRC wing. It needs bolt-on fender flares too.

If I was building one for the road I might go with a 2400cc NA engine (270hp@8000rpm), 6 speed H pattern manual and FWD. I'd keep the WRC wing though. :ugeek:

I've an '02 BMW 325i. I chose it because it was a nice car and affordable. I really like that it seems like it's going to last forever and it's really nice to drive.
I actually has had to get something fixed on it, as the tail lights were recalled, causing me to avoid cops for a week or so.

I'm always either too broke or something on mine is broke and I miss this trip, but one year, I'm totally fucking doing it.
Soldati senza confini wrote:Restoration would be nice, would it be expensive in a car such as that one though?

Not especially. I replaced a motor for what my brother paid to have his radiator fixed on his Mini Cooper. Just because she's my daily there are things I fixed already, like brakes suspension gear box engine...and over twenty years some of those things a few times. Mechanically except for a particularly pesky header she's fine. I have to pull out the wiring harness at some point and replace that, the part is only $150, but the process is mindnumbing. But when I do that I want to install an auxiliary battery with a converter so I can plug stuff in (no cigarette lighter) and make a second run at a car stereo (the last one lasted exactly three weeks before being stolen in my apartment parking lot because the doors didn't lock and I lived next to a crackhead. I know it was his ass because he left halfway through because he heard my motorcycle coming. I have a pair of drive in movie speakers I'm going to put new 4" speakers in, I found someone who makes kick panels with speaker holes and a previous owner already cut the upper deck rear cupboard for speakers in the back.

Paneling the interior would be like a grand, replacing the coolbox the methheads (I'm poor, I live near a lot of substance abuse...) stole and the buddy seat the dude who stole my stereo destroyed will be a little over a grand. Whatever I end up doing to fix the front seats maybe another. Then it's just paint/bodywork which costs the same no matter what the car is...well, it's a van, so a little more. But she's pretty dry so it shouldn't be that bad.

But...like I said, I'm poor. When I bought this thing it was cheap, now you can't even find a barely runner for less than $15k. In order to do her right I have to take her off the road for a few months, and what would I drive?

Depending on whatever windfall that comes my way to allow this to happen the candidates are (drumroll...)
1967 MGB GT w/overdrive
or
a Mk.1 GTi, just to have had one for a bit. At least it would be easier to give up once I got my Bus back.
or, if I get a big jump in income, and I must buy something modern,
a 2004 R32...I know there are newer ones and maybe even the Golf R is faster and I did just posit a windfall, so why hold back? I just like that generation and it has a proper stick shift.

Or, you know, keep rocking a van and see if I can get a running Econoline from the early sixties. Panel. Use that for work.

The rest of the things would be work before I could get to work on my Bus and while she is not a she but an inanimate object with no feelings or will, she would flip her shit if I worked on another car first...so the 1950 Willys Aero Ace would have to wait. As well as the Citroen Traction Avante. Or that goddamn Lotus Espirit S2 I saw for sale locally for $7500 that the previous owner had let go to seed...

...I need to make more money. So I can still have no money and a bunch of unfinished project cars surrounding me...

I'm not even a good mechanic.

There's a very well restored bus getting around in the city which I live in, the guy who drives it seems to be a bit of an enthusiast for VW's because he owns an original bug and a very weird, diesel powered hatchback looking thing that I can't identify.

What drove you to buy the car you bought (dream car, affordability, etc.)? Affordable
What do you like about your car in terms of performance or what would you like to fix/upgrade if you had the money? The stereo, cd player crapped out last week.
Lastly, have you registered and passed the inspection of your car yet? Why or why not, and what does it require to fix so it can pass the inspection if there's an issue with it? If you have done so already did it pass with flying colors or did you have to fix anything? I don't have to have my car inspected.

Brasilia? I don't know why I'm asking like you'll go, "Yes, oddball Brazilian VW...it was on the tip of my tongue...I'm not even 100% sure that Brazilias came in diesel.

No, it's even weirder. I keep thinking Karmann Ghia probably because that's the only other classic, non-Bug/Kombi VW that I'm aware exists but the pictures on the internet don't match it. Similar though.

Actually I think it's a Type 3, if such a car exists.

Is it an SP2? Those are the coolest aircooled VW, imo.

...I need to make more money. So I can still have no money and a bunch of unfinished project cars surrounding me...

I'm not even a good mechanic.

A 2500 dollar restoration project isn't that bad, I thought it'd have been more expensive given the type of car it is. Also, those are sweet choices on cars as replacements. The R32 was also former Pope Benedict's car before being elected as the Pope :p interesting coincidence; overall I think it's a good choice for a modern car though, also if you could find one with the TDL engine you'd be golden. They taut good fuel economy.

Also, not all of us are good mechanics. I'm decent with mechanic work on a car but it's not like I've gone to school for it  been mostly through working with my dad on them and learning. It's pretty cool to work on them though.

As for dream cars, I've built them for the game rFactor. Both are Honda Integra DC2s.

This one has a 1600cc NA engine (270hp@10700rpm), 7 speed sequential gearbox, FWD.

:ugeek:

We've had cars who've had the exhaust replaced. Not fun.

The dream cars tho... amazing. You're a Honda fan aren't you? :p

The most expensive car of 2014 is the (as usual, overpriced) Lamborghini Veneno.

Pretty sure catalytic converters are a requirement in the US :P

Replacing exhausts is great. Get a nice aftermarket tuned exhaust for that vroom vroom.

I think they were aiming more for it to be a special edition item rather than a real top performer.

Reminds me of the time Corvette launched its 25th anniversary edition car or the Ferrari with the Enzo Ferrari car to celebrate their first Formula 1 title of the millenium.

Yeah.

Honestly, I wouldn't want one unless I was rich and looking for something not taxable to put my money into. It's ugly, the performance is sub-par for the cost, and you can't park it without every carjacker in the state hauling ass over to your car door.

Which kind of car do you drive?

Don't own one, but my dad owns a 1999 Pontiac Montana, which is showing its age.

What drove you to buy the car you bought (dream car, affordability, etc.)?

Don't own one :P

What do you like about your car in terms of performance or what would you like to fix/upgrade if you had the money?

Honestly, I'd prefer if our family got a new car altogether, because it's a piece of shit at this point, and isn't worth upgrading at all.

Lastly, have you registered and passed the inspection of your car yet? Why or why not, and what does it require to fix so it can pass the inspection if there's an issue with it? If you have done so already did it pass with flying colors or did you have to fix anything?

Uh...No comment on this, because our car probably doesn't pass inspection at this point.

Anyway, on a more serious note, my dream car is a Tesla Model S, but for obvious reasons ($80,000+ price tag), that's kind of out of the question right now.
