Japanese PM Ozawa: Christianity is 'self-righteous'

Postby Daistallia 2104 » Tue Nov 10, 2009 7:45 pm

DPJ's Ozawa calls Christianity 'self-righteous'

Wednesday 11th November, 06:17 AM JST

TOKYO —

Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa said Tuesday that Christianity is an ‘‘exclusive and self-righteous religion’’ after meeting with a Buddhist group leader. ‘‘European and U.S. societies with a historical background of Christianity are bogged down,’’ the ruling party’s No. 2 leader told reporters after meeting Yukei Matsunaga, president of the Japan Buddhist Federation, in Wakayama Prefecture.

On Islam, Ozawa said, ‘‘It is better than Christianity but it is also exclusive.’’ But Ozawa praised Buddhism, saying, ‘‘It teaches us a state of mind and way of life from the start about how human beings should be.’’ He added that the cause of the current social turmoil in Japan is that Japanese people are losing their original spiritual values.

‘‘Politicians cannot conduct politics if they are not prepared to work as both a human being and Japanese,’’ Ozawa said.

On the Liberal Democratic Party which became an opposition party following a general election in August, Ozawa said, ‘‘It is originally a typically Japanese party, but it lost that virtue. That is the biggest reason why it lost people’s support.’’

If he insists on quantifying religions, I find it a bit bizarre that he would consider Islam better than Christianity.

Sounds like the Japanese nationalist version of "The evil *insert foreign influence here* are stealing our jobs and eroding our culture" rant.

Zen is not the primary Buddhist school in Japan, but rather Jodo/Jodo Shinshu, sub-schools of Pure Land Buddhism.

And while it doesn't excuse his comments one bit, keep in mind he is Prime Minister of a country that had been overrun by Portuguese Jesuits a looong time ago.

I know of people who have gone on missionary work to Japan, and all I can usually say is, "Really?" I mean, really? a society and culture with strong values and you want to go there and impose an alien culture?

What century is this again?

Well, if his main experience of Christianity is with missionaries looking for converts, I can understand his opinion. I don't like missionaries, either.

But that said, I can't help wondering:

Who the fuck asked him?

I tend to feel very sorry for the missionaries in Japan. They run smack into Japan's famous hospitality, inability to be rude to guests, obession with free English lessons, and casual indifference to religion, which usually results in said missionary getting invited in, a cup of tea, politly listened to for an hour or so, and then turned down flat. :p
