Short National Description:
Carpathus is a small peaceable republic with a major government focus on education and scientific research. One example of this is ASER, the fledgling space agency of Carpathus. Carpathus is rather isolated and most of its territory is densely forested mountain ranges. Most of the population lives near the coast in an area known as the Carpath basin.
Due to the rugged nature of Carpathus the national defensive policy has always focused on a strong entrenched defense. No army has ever been able to entirely conquer Carpathus.

Legislature:
The legislature of Carpathus is a unicameral body called the Senate of the Unitary Republic of Carpathus and is a 300 member body charged with drafting and passing the laws of Carpathus. Members are elected to 6-year terms by biennial elections, meaning that every two years one third of the senators are up for election. All laws drafted are sent to the President, where he may pass or veto it. Vetoes can be overruled by a three fourths majority of Senate.
Budget suggestions can be written by the President and Treasury Secretary and then approved by the Senate by a two thirds majority. The Senate also has the ability to write the budget, although it is common practice to take the President's suggestion as a base and amend it. Due to a small but thriving economy, the budget of Carpathus has consistently had a small surplus for decades, with the occasional temporary deficit.

Judicial Branch:
The Judicial Branch is headed by the High Court of Carpathus. The High Court consists of 15 court judges who judge cases based on a simple majority. High Court judges are appointed by the President and confirmed by the senate. They serve life terms unless they retire, resign, or are impeached. There are also several levels of courts under the High Court all the way down to the municipal courts.

Political Parties.
The current administration is ran by the Carpathan Democratic Party(CDP). The CDP is a center left party. They have held the presidency for the past 14 years, under 2 different presidents.
Although presidents are elected by popular vote, to garner approval for their cabinet they must usually form unofficial coalitions in the legislature.
*Carpathan politicians, due to an extensive anti-corruption movement and political purge in the 1950s, are very uncorrupted compared to many countries. It is also due in part to strict regulations on corporate and foreign lobbying.
Politics in Carpathus are usually very civil and most of the parties from across the spectrum tend to vote in new budgets very swiftly with a small amount of controversy or friction. This cooperation is mostly due to the fact that official negotiations for the budget start one year in advance and each budget passed goes by two fiscal years, not one, so most of the issues are ironed out by the time the vote comes up. In the event of a budget shutdown, the President has constitutional powers to maintain emergency funding for the military and police, fire, and emergency medical services. This policy was written to ensure stability should a shutdown ever occur.

Carpathan Democratic Party: Lead By - Senator Alverson (Former Provincial Councilman and Governor)
The main power party for quite a long time. The Democratic Party is centre-left on the political scale. Their focus is on running the government efficiently and keeping citizens well being first.

National Labour Party: Lead By - Senator Martinez (Former Union President and Community Organizer)
Was once seen as a more liberal arm of the Carpathan Democratic Party, but on many issues there is an amount of disagreement. This is due to bad blood between the two parties that started when the NLP split off from the Democrats over what several unions believed were too many concessions given to corporations in the Labour Rights Act of 1993 . This party is seen as left or far left on the political scale.

Carpathan Socialist Party: Lead By - Senator Rutzkov (Former College Professor and Political Activist)
A far left political party, the CSP is the second smallest political party with representation in the Senate

Conservative Republicans: Lead By - Senator Daniels (Former Provincial Governor)
As a centre-right party, the Republicans strive to maintain national stability both politically and fiscally.

Justice Party: Lead By - Senator Tomlinson (Former Attorney-General)
The party is a right to far-right political party. The party platform emphasizes is placed on the rule of law, a strong military, and constitutional rights.

Geography

Carpathus Is a decent sized coastal nation.
Area: Est. 93,000 Km²
Population Density: 108/km²
Terrain: The terrain in Carpathus consists almost entirely of massive mountain ranges and deep, extremely dense forests. Within this a labrynth of rivers and stream that Carpathan geologists and enviromental scientists have yet to fully map out. (Think a more extreme version of US pacific northwest rain forests and mountain ranges) On the coast there is a decent amount of flatlands. Over 85% of the population lives on or near the coast. The rest generally live in several major mountain valleys near the center of the nation.

Natural Resources:
The three key mineral resources are Iron, Copper, and Tin, which are found in the mountain ranges along with some deposits of coal. Timber, although heavily regulate and restricted to certain areas is very profitable. Hydroelectric power, due the the extensive river systems in Carpathus, is the main source of energy. Supplementing these dams are some older coal plants that are being slowly phased out, and even now are only used during the winter, which can be fairly harsh in Carpathus.
Recent projects in geothermal and wind power technology have began practical trials, but many in the government believe that to ensure a truly stable and independent energy source, that a nuclear power facility must be developed. Most citizens however, believe that such a program would attract the unwanted attention of aggressive nuclear powers.

Draft: There is a draft in time of war or emergency declared by the President and one cabinet secretary. Ages 18-35 are eligible for the draft. Women are not barred from any branch or combat but will not be drafted into combat roles unless they request a combat unit.

Description:
The Armed Forces of The Republic of Carpathus is the official military of the Carpathan people and government.
The active military is relatively small, but the force is supplemented with a decent sized reserve and police forces serving as paramilitary if the need rises.
Being a small military, it is ran as a tight knit organization. Each of the three 'branches of the service' still retains a civilian secretary within the Department of War to oversee their administration. They only really oversee the administrative portion, the branch's commanding officer still retains most of the authority.
Reservists give up a weekend per month and 3 weeks a year for summer training. Most reservists sign on to 6 year contracts.
The Military's mission is one of defense and national security. There Hasn't been a major military conflict in decades, but the military is always vigilant in being prepared.

Carpathan Army:
The Army is the main ground force of the military. The army is primarily a reactionary defensive force, but there is one active infantry division providing the first line of national defense, this is supplemented by the active Marine Corps units.

The Army and Air Corps work so closely together that there is no real separation between the branches.
