After Domination of Chetkosk, Apples Need Only to Not Lose Big

With an impressive 2-0 win over the Chetkosk Totalitarians that included goals by the top-line combo of Rick Jones and Guillaume Lajeunesse and a dominating 28 save performance from Pascal Sévigny, the Apples have now guaranteed their place into the next round of the World Cup in Plutoni. With one match remaining, against Mohawk Clans, the team now has to avoid losing by three goals in order to assure their place on top of Group 1 and setting up a Round 2 date with one of potentially four different opponents, including neighbouring Mangolana or Civil Citizenry. The Apples are feeling confident at this point, and why shouldn't they? They came out of the bye playing their best hockey, and they are likely less tired than some other teams that have been going full speed ahead since the tournament started.

Everything seemed to be working for the Apples in their victory over Chetkosk- they killed off four penalties successfully, and scored a power play goal through some good passing and Lajeunesse's deadly wrister. Defensively the team were sound, outhitting Chetkosk and generally forcing weak shots and clogging passing zones. The Chetkosk side got frustrated during the end of the game, committing lazy penalty after lazy penalty in an effort to hinder the Apple juggernaut- even wasting penalties by hooking Alexopopoulos and boarding Thierry Johansson. Cotdelapoms will be under no pressure at all when taking on Mohawk Clans, knowing that even in the worst case scenario they will simply have to take on a Kulverint side that has looked impressive in this tournament but is clearly not of the same calibre as our boys.

Meanwhile, Shu Huanguo- the Avatarian Monster, did not play in Gyatso-kai's last game which means that many Montréal Royals fans found themselves in their usual state- disappointment! Whilst Lajeunesse scoring a beauty should be enough for them, I think many of them are worried that their goalie is mentally falling apart. You would think that would make him more relateable! Regardless, if you happen to be in the suburbs of our second city, talk about how excellent Gyatso-kai looked against Carasatoga when they were confident ahead of their goalie and oh wait, it wasn't your boy Shu? Oh well, good team anyway...

Another loss for Miley World

Well, as expected, Miley World lost againt the host, Plutoni, which could be the beast team in the group. Funny thing, Plutoni's equipment manager is a robot. Petterri Salmelainen played his 2nd game of the tournament cuz Dalton Byers is still suspended. In the 1st period William Haley fought with Mikkle Shob, who isn't used to fight, but Haley is like that, he likes to fight against top players. They both got 5 minutes for fighting. After that fight Miley World attacked, but Tantre Ludov stopped everything. Then Kyle Hamilton was penalized for elbowing. Affip Heenes scored on the pp assisted by Amir Payne and Sarah Dickinson.

After that goal, Plutoni kept attacking for the rest of the game and Miley World was kinda invisible. Juukka Karjalainen stopped everything. Well almost everything, cuz he allowed another goal in the 2nd period when Jennifer Blint scored assisted by Mikkle Shob and Digin Marigal.

Miley World's remaining game is against Sibirsky and if Miley World wins, they're 4th. But if they lose they're 5th or even 6th if one between Howdeellow or Hippostania wins.

Boxscore

Congratulations to the playoff teams and commiserations to the eliminated ones. Some good RPers this time around, I've enjoyed seeing everyone's takes on Plutoni. :) There will be a bye day tomorrow, with playoff scorination Monday night (about 48 hours from now). The first matches are:

1. Plutoni vs. 16. Shofercia (Downtown Digidome)
8. Polar Islandstates vs. 9. Kelssek (Nuthink Rink)
4. Qazox vs. 13. Cotdelapoms (NRG! Arena)
5. North Chicanan vs. 12. Mantwenic (Bitlyn Park S)
2. Cassadaigua vs. 15. Carasatoga (Northwest Ice Castle)
7. Delaclava vs. 10. Ocel0t (SubWorks Arena)
3. Valanora vs. 14. Mohawk Clans (East Hive)
6. Princess Béatrice Island vs. 11 Kulverint (Southern Neb)

with the winners of the first two listed matches playing each other, ditto the third and fourth, and so on.

Seeding was by record and goal difference, which I thought I'd spelled out as a tiebreaker, but clearly not. Random numbers were generated to break two inter-group ties. Check my math if you want?

Qazox gave up an early goal to Allamunnic States, but rallied behind 5 unanswered goals from 5 different players (which had 8 different players picking up an assist) to finish atop Group 8 with a 5-0-1 record. Suprisingly, there was no penalties called in the game. The referee's whistle only came out 15 times. 8 times for offsides (4 from each team); 6 times for icing (4 from Qazox, 2 from AMS); and once for debris on the ice, a beer cup thrown by a Qazoxian fan towards the Allamunnic States bench that almost hit AMS coach Kyle Smart.

This team was the most dominant group stage offense, scoring 26 goals overall, with the next nearest team only scoring 19 (Alphabet soup). The team was tied for 4th in goals allowed and had the best differntial with a +22.

What does that all mean? Nothing! Beacuse you throw out the numbers once the playoffs begin. Qazox will face off with Cotdelapoms in the first round, with the winner to face either North Chicanan or Mantenwic in the quarterfinals. If Qazox does make the semifinals, a re-match with Plutoni looms or even a match with Kelssek or Polar Islandstates. On the other side of the bracket, Cassadaigua, Delaclava, Valanora, and Ocel0t seem to be the biggest threats, but don't count out Princess Beatrice Island either.

Eagles Win it Big over Cotdelapoms

And the Eagles have done it, they've done what was believed to be a sure loss, they beat former WCOH and JWCOH champions Cotdelapoms in a close 2-1 match that has secured the Eagles spot in the playoffs in the World Cup. While Cotdelapoms may have been under no pressure, the Eagles had it all on them, after losing big to Darmen a few games ago and then getting weak victories over the rest, a strong team like Cotdelapoms made it look all but guaranteed that the Eagles would lose big, especially with their star William D. Earnest having only scored two goals in the entire Cup.
But something just clicked on that heavenly night, as William D. Earnest would go on to score not once but twice, both in the third period, one being at 14'37 and the other at 8'20, scoring both times off of assists from Jordan Lowe, who was the defender who let the opposing goal in during the first at 10'13, scored by Louis Periard. Below you can find the penalties for the game

Mohicia:
#24 Lorenzo, First 12'13
#55 Williams, First 10'45
#65 Morris, First 10'37
#65 Morris, Second 11'23
#65 Morris, Third 14'32

Cotdelapoms:
RW Cohen, First 13'07
Defender Briére, Third 14'50

And here are the goals scored by both teams

Mohicia:

#08 Earnest, 3rd 14'37
#08 Earnest, 3rd 8'20

Cotdelapoms:
LW Periard, 1st 10'13

Moving away from game coverage, ICBS recently did an interview after the game with Manager Larry Palmquist and asked him about his opinion on the team's success and if he thought the Eagles could go all the way. His reply was that if the Eagles could beat the former champions, they could take it all the way. However, he did mention that the Eagles would remain cautious and would continue their strict practices throughout the Cup, due to the fact that Manager Palmquist believes the minute you let up, you become lax, it's the minute you lose.

Did television failure lead to electoral failure?

The Progressive Conservatives led by Don Cramberly could well have been the first government defeated by a hockey game. Voters suddenly turned to the Haligonia Social Democrats and elected Megan O'Grady, purportedly infuriated by the Cramberly government's response to a cable television outage in the province's largest metropolitan area at a crucial point in a World Cup of Hockey group stage game.

"I think the people have more important things on their minds than watching hockey" could well go down as one of the famous last words in Kelssekian politics, as the Social Democrats were able to characterise the PCs as having allowed the province's communications infrastructure to decay into the stone age and played nicely into allegations that federal funds from the national fibre optic cabling program were redirected into a slush fund.

Whatever political analysts say, or indeed the wagging tongues about first-world problems, the frustration of over a million Breton residents who not only had their international hockey interrupted, but were left without television or internet for over 92 hours, found quick and easy vent at the ballot box.

But there were larger issues, insist many who point to the issue of trust. "This is the 21st century and the information age. Besides, if they're so incompetent they can't keep the internet on, we'll have the water supply fail, hospitals overrun by smallpox, and bits of concrete falling off bridges next."

Ex-premier Cramberly refused to criticise a conspiracy at the highest levels of HaliComm, the provincial corporation responsible for communications infrastructure, and instead blamed "ethnic votes" for his defeat.

A convincing win for Miley World

After losing against Chenkorya and Plutoni, Miley World beat Sibirsky 5-0 and took the 4th rank in the group 4. Dalton Byers was back in Miley World's line up after serving a 2 games suspension, he took Kyle Hamilton's spot on the 4th line, so Petteri Salmelainen was still in the line up. Miley World attacked strong and Garrett Shaw scored with 17:54 to go in the 1st period. Then Miley World got 2 penalties in a row, one for hooking and one for interference on the goalie. After killing these two penalties, Sibirsky got a penatly and Taylor McNally scored on the power play.

In the 2nd period an Unidentified Sibirsky Player hitted Brandon Blake, the hit was legal, and then he fought with Taylor McNally who defended his teammate. Both got 5 minutes for fighting. Brandon Blake went to the locker room. Miley World scored another goal and the score was 3-0 for Miley World at the end of the 2nd period. Brandon Blake came back in the game at the start of the 3rd period, he looked ok. And Miley World scored 2 other goals, they won 5-0 and it was Juukka Karjalainen's 3rd shutout in the tournament (well I think a 0-0 draw counts as a shutout?).

Boxscore
1st period
MILEY WORLD: Garrett Shaw assisted by William Haley and Nathan MacLean at 2:06

ooc: The Northern Hockey Association duly appologizes for a lack of roster so far this tournament, due to school commitments. Proper rp and roster will be posted tonight, since even without it we're still second in group play and feel some need to at least give information pertinent to the competition.

Why Cotdelapoms MUST Defeat Qazox

Many Apples fans are feeling a lot of stress after the World Cup's bracket came out and situated the Apples not against Shofercia, but rather against Qazox, a team with a tremendous history, yet lacks the same drive and passion of us pomhommes. This has not been an exceptional tournament for us so far, with the Apples coming up lame in the first round, due seemingly to some combination to lack of drive and exhaustion- their only complete performance came against Chetkosk after the bye. Qazox will be a difficult opponent, as they are historically a strong team, but have also been a favourite of the locals this tournament despite previous clashes. Many of the robotic fans appreciate the seemingly passionless, effortless skill that the Qazox team demonstrates- they just go out there and win. This is not an insult, Qazox doesn't make many stupid mistakes and doesn't ever get too flashy.

Predictably our failures thusfar has led to a lot of suggestions that Guy Lemaire be removed from his position as national team coach, and it's hard to imagine him staying on should the Apples fall short of the semi-finals. Lemaire's departure has been most fervently called upon by Sport+ hockey guru Alain David, who has stated on his blog at infosport.cdp "Lemaire has seemingly lost the attention of the dressing room, and his players are not playing very hard. Being a big star in the CHL doesn't do you a world of good when you are representing Cotdelapoms, and Lemaire needs to hold these guys accountable. I know they are probably all having a hard time dealing with being surrounded by sentient robots that behave a lot like those unfeeling Waaldish, but they need to focus on hockey first and foremost. This is the World Cup, and I do not think Guy is imparting that in these guys".

Frankly, we all really like Guy Lemaire as a person, he is an affable man with a known interest in quirky topics such as vintage cars and Cotdelapomais history. Indeed, he would be well suited for being Prime Minister, which is a delightful twist of irony considering Jean-Pierre Dandenault's knowledge of hockey and complete disregard for Cotdelapomais history. We'd like for Guy Lemaire to succeed in spite of all the naysayers, since we only like to naysay people who are not otherwise naysayed at this blog. It'd be generally good for Cotdelapomais hockey if he got his act together and learned that he needs to crack the whip on this group of players who are used to being treated more like rock stars than any other team of hockey players in the world. He needs to stop being so Cotdelapomais, in essence, and start being a huge dick to everyone in order to remind them he is in charge.

This is not the only reason we need to win this game, the other most obvious reason is the excellent tournament PBI is having thusfar, which has earned them the cakewalk matchup with Kulverint that we wanted. PBI doing better than us is something we cannot tolerate, considering they keep doing it at Copa Rushmori anyway. PBI certainly has one of the best generations of players in its' history coming up, somehow likely due to the Rangers, not that they should have ever inspired anyone to play hockey other than perhaps out of the thought that "if they can play in the CHL, I certainly can too!"

We also need to win this game because the robots of Plutoni are starting to behave in an aggressive manner towards our fans. Comments on some of our other posts have included some wild tales, including this one, from MarinerFan1983:

"My friend and I traveled to Plutoni to support the boys and see some right wicked hockey, and we've had an awful time here in Plutoni. Some of these robots are real shit disturbers, they gave us a lot of hassle at the game against Mohawk Clans- outright booing the national anthem, refusing to serve us human food, squirting oil at us, shooting sparks at us, shouting slurs. It was really offensive. I think it'd be really satisfying if the boys could go out there and play with some heart, but that wouldn't actually impress the robots very much since they don't have hearts. In actual fact, y'know, it'd probably be best if they played with pinpoint precision and cold emotionless faces, but that's not what we're all about."

"Despite a recent 6-0 victory over Savski Venac, Team Shofercia is in a tough spot, as the Eagles play against the Plutoni robots, the hosts of the tournament. The Eagles started off very well, with a 3-0 victory over Holstejn. In the next game, Dat Pashkov's goal enabled Shofercia to defeat Mangolana, 1-0, and become the only team in their group not to lose a single game.

And then disaster hit! Maybe it was cockiness, maybe something else, but Team Shofercia lost to the newcomer Vuhifellian States, in a 1-3 rout. The loss shook the team. A much less confident Eagles appeared in the game against Civil Citizenry, mustering a tie. And then came the "break week" - a vital time for recovery for Team Shofercia, that was, for the first time in four World Cups, on the verge of elimination. The break didn't help, as Shofercia was shut out by Kulverint, and facing elimination.

At this point in time Coach Uriev had enough. He told the Shofercian Eagles to "just go out there, and have fun". The result was a 6-0 victory over Savski Venac, one of the biggest in Team Shofercia's history. Now let's ask our panelists, can we take on Plutoni?"

Yaroslav: "Absolutely. If we just go out there and have fun. There's no reason to panic. Yeah, we almost missed the playoffs, but here's the thing that our team needs to realize: the fans love you! We're with you 100 percent of the way, win or lose. We just need to go out there, and have fun. And don't take it seriously, it's just a game. Yes, it's an important game, but it's not the end of the World. There will be other games. We play the best, when we have the most fun. Do what makes us great. Pass-pass-check-pass-score! Don't be afraid of the robots, just go out there, and get it done!"

Caitlin: "I agree, and I think we should be more aggressive, and less unsure of ourselves. No one in the SSF thinks twice about shooting a target, if it's legit, we do it. No more hesitation. I sometimes get the feeling that we pass too much. If we see an open net - we shoot. If we get a great opportunity - go for it! The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. No pressure. Just go out there, and have a blast, and don't get routed. And I like that Coach Uriev is giving Alexandrov a chance to start off - that's new!"

Ivan: "I'll just add that we need to be creative. Robots will be robots. We need knucklepucks, lifter-goals, and any other crazy things that one can conjure. The crazier we get, the more likely the chance of victory. And we can't get crazy without having fun! It's good that we lost two games, out of six, because it taught us to have fun, and to avoid being supremely cocky. Sometimes you need to get your butt kicked, to realize that. We beat, or tied, all the hard teams. We lost to fairly new teams. There's no logic in that, if we played all games equally well. But when we focused too much on making the perfect play, we lost. When we focused on having fun, we won. That's what we should do! WIN - FO SHO!"

Cotdelapoms came into the 16th WCoH as one of the dark horses to win. But we know what they do to one-trick ponies, right? They end up as glue. The Apples played like the ice was glue, as Qazox raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and cruised to a 5-0 win over Cotdelapoms. 2 goals each from Craig Merrick and Danielle Royal sparked the victory. A fight between the two teams erupted with 33 seconds left after Leo Swzawzki took a swing at Rezzi Tzar’kr’El with his stick after being hit, quite accidently with a high-stick. Swzawki will miss the next game due to a Game Misconduct penalty.

Qazox will next face Mantenwic, who upended North Chicanan 2-0 earlier in the day. The winner of this game will face either Polar Islandstates or Plutoni in the semifinals.

Dear Diary,

I appear to be lost. I only went a for a walk. It's this bloody place. Full of robots and tech this and tech that and cyborgs and walls that talk to you. I told you nothing good would come of this place. I told the traffic light to hurry up earlier and it got shirty with me, apparently I have to treat it like I would treat any other sentient being. Although, to be honest, I'd tell any other sentient being to hurry up in that situation as well...

And so here I am, head in the clouds as usual, you know me, I got lost. Or rather, head in 'the cloud', as might be more appropriate now. So I ended up here. In some sort of... 'place'. I don't know. Part of my mind was on the thrilling shoot-out win over Kelssek I'd just seen the team play, part of my mind on how to get rinkside tickets for the next match against our hosts, Plutoni, part of my mind was pondering the abusive traffic lights I'd just encountered, and another part of my mind was... I don't know. Rebooting, maybe?

Anyway, I ended up here. Surrounded by flashing lights and an ever changing crowd of Plutoni natives. Flashing lights and beeping noises and whirling walls of a transient nature. I don't know. Some of the people (people?) appear to be able to slip straight through some of the walls, whilst others get caught up and shifted along, swept into a bin of some sort. I've managed to avoid that fate so far, but the pulsing lights get brighter around me sometimes and I have to move otherwise the floor starts to vibrate. Every now and then the cyborg-y types turn to look at me as well, I don't know, like they're examining me? I heard someone say something about a driver that needs resetting, but you can never tell with this place whether that's literally a part of a circuit somewhere or a cyborg taxi driver. This place melts your brain after a while. Like when we turned up to our first hotel, only to find that binary beds weren't the same as bunk beds at all.

So yeah, not sure what to do from here, to be honest. With time running out, I think its pretty clear to me that I won't be able to watch Radoslav and the boys in action against Plutoni after all. I mean, The chances of a win aren't great against the four-time world champions, but it would be nice to be there to appreciate the rewards for how far Polarian hockey has come in so short a time. I've tried asking the 'people' here for a way out, or to help me get back to my hotel, or to a transport hub, something. Anything. But to no avail. One of them went as far as pointing to his mechanical voicebox before making this weird deflating sound, so I'm not sure the sentient lifeforms here are all healthy, as it were. Maybe its like a decommissioning workshop. And after the memory and hardware get separated down here, the memory is added to the cloud? I don't know. Just a theory.

I'd be happy for a pint of Grogg right now I can tell you.

Or failing that, a way out?

Hello?

Someone?

...

Anyone?

One bounce of the puck can drastically change the complexion of a game. In Qazox' stunning 1-0 loss to Mantenwic, a bad bounce of the puck cost everyone the rematch of the year in the semifinals. Yolanda Estaban was trying to clear out the puck from deep within the Qazox zone, when the puck took a weird hop off the boards. The puck then bounced towards the front of the net, just within reach of Greyson. Amanda Greyson moved to clear the puck, but the puck took one last crazy hop and deflected off of Greyson's skate and into the net. Mantenwic's 2nd line center was given credit for the goal, even though he had just gone off the ice on a switch after dumping in the puck to set up the line change.

With 1:06 left, Coach Driesberg had no option but to take out Greyson for an extra skater, but it was to no avail, as Mantenwic's goalie kept his shutout streak alive by stopping 3 shots on net in th final 15 seconds, including a diving slap-away of a Craig Merrick shot with 4 seconds left.

Qazox once again heads home without a title, and one can only wonder, is this the last we'll see of this particular team? The team has been together for 3 straight Cups now, and the average age has gone from 25 to 33. Is it now time for a fresh infusion of young talent or will this team be thrown out one last time to try to win the Cup?

It was six o clock in the morning, the sun had yet to rise on Plutoni. Outside on the roads in the heart of the busy city, the roads were starting to flair up as robots were heading off to work or coming home, filling the roads partially.

Standing out on the roads was a convoy of around four black SUV's as well as some fancy sport cars, painted with some hot rod color. Inside them, getting looks from robots oddly enough, were the members of the Mohicia Eagles, the national Mohician team that had defied it all this year at the World Cup. As the light changed, the cars pulled into the parking space besides the small hockey arena that their Manager Larry Palmquist had booked for the entire time they were here for practice, starting at six in the morning, stopping at noon for lunch and then back again till five. When the cars pulled into the parking lot, the various humans got out, all of varying ethnicities. Each was dressed differently, William Earnest was dressed in jeans and a pull over jacket while Arsenio Lorenzo was dressed in a tank top, shorts and flip flops. One thing that was alike was a blue duffel bag in each of their hands, containing their pads, helmet, sticks and other gear needed for practice.

As they got into the locker room, they began to change, pulling on their pads and then slipping their white practice jersey's that simply had their number painted on it in black, no names, no marks, nothing. When they were done, one by one, they sat down in front of their locker, helmets loosely sitting on their heads and their sticks in their hands, twirling them around as they waited for the Manager, the ever determined Larry Palmquist. In a few moments, one could hear some banging and noise like someone opening a door and some ears perked up, mostly newer players while the veterans like Earnest and Miller kept their attention elsewhere, pondering what the practice might contain today. In a few seconds, Larry opened the door and stepped into the locker room, clothed in simple jeans with a long sleeve white shirt made of wool. A clipboard was in his hand, a pencil infamously stuck behind his ear. He pulled the clipboard up and removed the pencil, scanning the players and taking a silent roll call. After a few moments of utter silence, he put the clipboard down so it hand at his side in his left hand and then stared at the players, they waiting for him, and he waiting for they like a tense stare down from the Old West. In a few moments, the corners of his mouth twitched and the prep talk flowed out, like a river down a waterfall

" Guys, here we are. 4 years ago we arrived at the 12th World Cup of Ice Hockey. Four years ago, alot of younger and different faces sat in this room. Sure, we made some mistakes and we were sent home. Did it again in the 13 and the 14. But here we are, it's the 16th World Cup. It's down to four teams and we are bloody one of them. We've trained hard, I've drilled you for eleven hours for every day for the past two weeks, we've fought hard in the games and come up with victories mostly. Well deserved ones too. Some of you might be worried, we're going up against a heavy weight this time around. But you know what, they were worried when we went up against Cotdelapoms, the former Champion and host. And guess what? We sent their arses packing! And that's what were are going to do this game, we are going to walk into that arena, we're going to suit up and we're going to fight like a f*cking enraged eagle and we WILL not give up, we will fight on and if we are destined in Fate to lose, then by bloody hell, we're aren't going down without a fight! Now hit the ice and show me how an Eagle fights!"

The theme of this WCoH. Two of my opponents never even posted a roster (Tied one 1-1 and the other 0-0) while the others posted shallow rosters (save Cassadaigua, who posted a rather nice roster) and none of them RP'ed more than a couple games (I think THRILLEDGE posted three post-game RP's and Cass did two. Thatius did 3, Carasatoga did only a shallow roster).

It is all part of life, my friend... The way Plutoni had set up the scorinator just favoured some aspect other than RP'ing; which in and of itself is a subjective point up to Plutoni to decide how much it is worth. Look at a team who last Cup made it to 3rd and this time tied lesser-ranked teams in games, failed to make it out of group stage, yet RP'ed after every game and even some pre-game RP's.

Perhaps we will do better next time. If anything, we can just fix the situation by co-hosting a Cup ourselves. If anyone had made a bid besides Plutoni, I would have likely have voted for them instead of the Robots... all cold-mathematics and well-lubed servos. :P

At least you got that far... Hell, you got fourth place. Beats 32nd, eh?
