Brad Howland woke up in an extremely foul mood. He'd just embarrassed himself and his Woodstock Mountaineers team with an unprofessional display after the team's 6-2 loss to the Quinniville Conquistadors in Game 3 of the inaugural best-of-seven Cyanea Series.

He figured he'd have to employ small ball to get his team to manufacture runs against the tough Conquistadors pitching. What he didn't expect was a long overdue visit from Dr. Longball.

Woodstock hitters launched four home runs to three for Quinniville and the Mountaineers offence finally came to life and gave the Sarzonian champions new life, leading to Woodstock's 9-8 victory and evening the series at two games apiece.

"The first three games were a struggle for our offence," Howland said. "We finally managed to get on track tonight."

"What do you think was the biggest difference tonight?" a reporter asked.

"Timing," Howland said. "Our hitters took a few more pitches than usual and we just saw the ball a lot better."

One of the prime examples of this was shortstop Matt Embry. He went three-for-four with a three-run shot off Martan Sneijhder in the top of the third that gave Woodstock their first lead since Skip Hale's walkoff home run in Game 1, 4-1. Hale followed with a booming double that sent manager Neil Grienhaus out to the mound to talk to his pitcher.

"You're getting your pitches up," he said. "Make sure you're following through properly. And don't worry about Hale. He's not that fast. Concentrate on [rightfielder Russ] Adams. Get him out and we can get our bats to work."

"Got it," Sneijhder said.

Easier said that done. Adams golfed a 1-1 sinking fastball into right field to score Hale, who actually took off on the pitch. Adams cruised into second with a stand up double and a 5-1 Mountaineers lead.

However, Conchita Richard would struggle in the bottom of the third. She gave up back-to-back-to-back-to-back doubles with two out, cutting Woodstock's lead to 5-4 before pitching coach Roy Satterley jogged out to the mound.

"Conchita, stop trying to be fine!" he said. "Establish the inside corner!"

She did the very next pitch and got the hitter to line softly back to her for the out.

Little did anyone know, Woodstock would promptly go back to work. With a runner at second, Richard tagged the first home run of her career to deep left field, extending the Mountaineers lead to 7-4. In the bottom of the fourth, however, she gave up a one-out grand slam that sent Howland out to get her.

Lefthanded relief pitcher Calen George came in and shut the door the rest of the way. He finished the night with 4 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, striking out six and walking one intentionally. Grienhaus originally did not pinch hit because he wanted to save his bench for the later innings, and the lineup, which had been designed to handle the righthanded tosses of Richard was befuddled by the lefty.

George even helped his cause at the plate, driving in the tying run in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right. Hale would plate the winning run in the top of the ninth with a tape measure shot to straightaway centre field, setting the stage for Mountaineers closer Kerry Clark. Ten pitches and one strikeout later, the series was tied.

"We're going to be coming back to Fleetwood Park," Hale said. "This series is already going down as one of the best things baseball has to offer."

Woodstock hoped to defrost frozen bats, instead ignited

This hasn't been a very offensive first Cyanea Series, especially for the Woodstock Mountaineers. They scored four runs in the first three games, the series opener lasting 13 innings.

However, yesterday, they went for four dingers and nine runs to defeat Martan Sneijhder and the Quinniville Conquistadors 9-8.

Delaclava started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when Justin Semintur, hitting leadoff, got hold of the first pitch he saw and jacked it out of the park, giving the Conquistadors a 1-0 lead. However, Woodstock got the next laugh, and a rather large one, in the third inning. After Woodstock evened the score at 1-1, Matt Embry hit a three-run homer to give Woodstock a 4-1 lead and equaling their total for the first three games of the series. Russ Adams added to that number when he doubled Skip Hale home, who had doubled just previously.

However, Conchita Richard got into a spot of trouble. In the bottom of the third, she gave up four consecutive doubles to Bonn Ulsen, Tyler Cujol, Sneijhder, and Semintur. Ulsen, Cujol, and Sneijhder all scored to put Quinniville down only 5-4. However, Ethan Davies couldn't tie the game, blooping the ball back to Richard on a nasty breaking ball that nipped the corner.

There was even more scoring to come in the fourth. In a pitcher against pitcher battle, Richard got revenge for Sneijhder's double when she hit a home run to score herself plus one and make it a 7-4 game. However, in the next inning, Jim Jeffries singled, Haden Holden walked, Jake Tannebaum riskily bunted them over, Jake Rasch got an infield single, and Ulsen got the grand slam to give Quinniville the lead again and Ulsen only his second career grand slam. This chased Richard out and, unfortunately, for the Conquistadors, brought in Calen George. From there, George would shut down the Conquistadors, giving up only a scratch single to Jeffries in 4 2/3 innings while striking out six and intentionally walking Holden in order to face the less challenging Tannebaum.

Meanwhile, Sneijhder was removed after the fifth inning due to pitch count, with a shoddy start but still taking the win if the results held. In his place went Gerry Savage, who had immediate trouble. He got credited with a blown save in the sixth after George helped his own cause by tying the game with a sacrifice fly. Savage followed with two flawless innings, but the ninth didn't go so well. With one out, Skip Hale followed his heroic fashion by hitting Woodstock's fourth home run and giving Woodstock the win opportunity. George was finally brought out for Kerry Clark to close the game, and Clark needed only 10 pitches to dispatch the side and even the series at 2-2.

In game 5, the final game that will stay in Quinniville, Denton Wolfe will return to the mound. He pitched nine innings in game one, giving up no runs, two hits, and two walks while striking out thirteen. His counterpart is unannounced, but will most likely be either John Morgan or Woodstock's fifth starter, if there is one.

When your team loses by a score of 15-0, there isn't much a manager can do.

That was the exact thought Brad Howland had when he approached the microphones after the Quinniville Conquistadors laid the wood to his Woodstock Mountaineers by that score.

"If anyone has any intelligent questions about tonight's game, now's the time," Howland growled. He then waited for a few moments and smirked. "You'd be showing more intelligence than I did tonight, that's for sure."

Nervous laughter filled the room. Howland then waited until it died down before he spoke again.

"We just got our arses handed to us tonight," he said. "You can only do so much as a player or as a manager. Some nights, you get the bear. Tonight, the bear got us."

Brett Hobson started and was the losing pitcher for the Mountaineers. He allowed 10 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in just 2/3 innings before Howland went out and got him. It wasn't much better after that as righthander Oralis Martínez allowed four runs on seven hits in two innings of work. Lefty Joel Morales threw three innings and allowed four hits and two runs with five walks.

"When you have a night like tonight, all you can do is tip your cap to the other team and move on," said shortstop Matt Embry (0-for-4, three strikeouts). First baseman Skip Hale got the only Mountaineers hit, a bloop single down the right field line with none out in the top of the fifth. He was stranded by Quinniville's starter striking out the side on nine pitches.

"This may have been the worst performance I've ever seen out of this team," Hale said. "Not maybe. It was."

If there's any small consolation, at least the Mountaineers return to Fleetwood Park for Game 6. Howland said ace John Morgan would get the start.

"Our backs are to the wall," he said. "We have to win both remaining matches to win this series," he said. "Otherwise, it's over."

Cotdelapoms is trying to get its national baseball league off the ground and intends to do so after the World Baseball Classic. Teams will be done in a franchise format rather than in the traditional club style of our national football and rugby championships. Ownership groups are lined up and corporate sponsorship has been overwhelming, but the quality of players we've found from the local junior and senior leagues has been a little underwhelming. If any of your leagues have fringe players who would love to come abroad for big bucks please have their interest expressed to me, as we will be holding an import draft to coincide with the auction of the players on our national team.

With all the pressure of an elimination match squarely on the Woodstock Mountaineers, there was no one Brad Howland wanted on the mound for Game 6 than his ace, John Morgan.

Truth be known, Morgan wanted no one else on the mound for Game 6. He stalked up to the mound after his pregame warmup tosses, drew in his breath and exhaled. He'd pitched on the much larger stage of the World Baseball Classic. He'd been the man the Stars looked to in the clutch. Now he was in that same situation for his Mountaineers.

He would be up to the task for a career-high 11 innings. However, Quinniville's Matt Terscera was up to the task of shutting down the Mountaineers through nine. In the 12th, Howland went to lefthander Tommy Enright, who heretofore had only been a situational lefty. However, Howland's words to Enright were unusual.

"We're going to need you to pitch for a while," he said.

"Huh?"

"You're pitching as long as you can," Howland said. "I'll explain later."

Enright settled in, knowing he couldn't try to throw with maximum effort on every pitch like he normally would. He'd also try to mix in his rarely-used change up with his biting slider and blazing fastball.

Surprisingly, Enright stepped up his game. With two outs in the top of the 14th, he finally got gassed and walked the eighth place hitter. That brought Rowland out.

"Can you get their guy?"

"Yeah," Enright said.

"Throw a two-seamer. Get him to ground out."

"I don't throw a two-seamer."

"Then throw a low fastball. See if he'll top it."

"All right Roy," Enright said with a smirk. That got a chuckle out of the normally tightly-wound Howland, who surprised the 57,146 in attendance at Woodstock's Fleetwood Park by jogging back to the dugout without making a pitching change.

Low fastball, he thought. He threw it.

"Ball."

Enright winced. He thought he had the call.

"C'mon blue, you've been giving that call all night," came the exhortation from someone in the Woodstock dugout. He has, Enright thought. I'll try it again.

"Ball."

Enright sighed almost imperceptibly. The Sarzonian umpire glared out at Enright until he caught second base umpire Jack Joyce glaring at him. Perturbed, he called time. Joyce ran in and called him to talk between the mound and shortstop.

"Andy," Joyce whispered. "You've gotta have a thicker skin."

"They're bitching about the last two pitches."

"I would be, too," Joyce said. "You'd been calling that a strike for 13 innings. Why stop now? You want to be here all night? Call your game whether it's the top of the first or the bottom of the night, er, well, the top of the 14th."

After the confab ended, Andy Summerlin returned to his spot behind the plate. Enright kicked and fired. This time, the ball may have been a millimetre lower than the first two pitches.

"STRRRRRIKE!"

"Blue, c'mon, you're killin' me," the hitter said.

"Enough!" Summerlin snapped.

Enright threw his next pitch, the first change up in the count. Strike two.

All right, he thought. He's looking dead red but he's going to try to adjust to the change up. Slider in the dirt."

He threw. Swing and a miss.

That meant Howland would go to switch pitcher Alan Tisdale to start the 15th. By now, Conquistadors manager Neil Grienhaus had sent up a lefty to hit against Tisdale. However, Tisdale pitched from his left side and got him to ground out harmlessly to shortstop Matt Embry. Grienhaus sent up a right handed pinch hitter, causing Tisdale to switch and pitch from his right side. He blew a fastball by him for strike three. Then it was alternating through the 16th.

That meant Skip Hale would come up to lead off the bottom of the 16 with the game still scoreless. He drilled a 2-0 fastball deep over the 326 foot sign in left field for his second walkoff homer in the series. As Mountaineers players mobbed him at home plate, his high-wattage smile was unmistakable.

And who could blame him? This first-ever Cyanea Series was going the full seven. One more match in front of an adoring sold out crowd at Fleetwood Park with the championship of the entire peninsula at stake. If he'd had any lingering doubts about the worth of this new Cyanea Series, they ended as quickly as his ball descended from the night sky and into the cheap seats among delirious Woodstockers.

Howland would not announce his starter for Game 7, saying he had a couple of possibilities. He said he wouldn't even dismiss the possibility of pitching Morgan on no rest if the Mountaineers needed it.

"One match, winner take all," Howland said. "This is right where we wanted to be all along."

What a ride.

The Woodstock Mountaineers were down a game and clinging on for life. It was up to John Morgan to put in a performance to save his team. He gave his team what was needed, shutting out the Quinniville Conquistadors for 11 innings. However, Matt Terscera nearly matched Denton Wolfe's performance of a one-hitter, shutting down the Mountaineers for nine. Gerry Savage lasted a career high six innings.

In the 12th innings, Tommy Enright came in to pitch, and needed to be able to go the most distance he could. He managed until the 14th inning, when he walked Tyler Cujol. That meant he had to face Gerry Savage, who was occasionally used as a situational pinch hitter. After two bad ball calls, and a discussion between home plate umpire Andy Summerlin and second basemen Jack Joyce, a congruent low fastball brought some dissent out of Savage, summoning a warning from Summerlin. Enright got two consecutive strikes to send Savage back onto the pitchers mound.

In the 15th, the batters faced Alan Tisdale. Justin Semintur came back to the plate, only to ground out to Matt Embry at short. Ethan Davies, previously 0-for-5, was removed from the game in favor of Kyle Kambora, but he struck out, and Jim Jeffries could do little better. Savage retired the side, and Tisdale sent Holden, Tannebaum, and Rasch back consecutively.

Savage was back in the dugout after only three pitches. No, there weren't three straight outs on empty counts. After Savage tried to monkey around with Skip Hale and got to 2-0, his alternate strategy to pitch to Hale backfired as Hale put it over the left field wall, reminiscent of Game 1. Game over. 3-3.

"This has been an incredible series," Semintur said. "The most fun I've had in baseball in my whole life. We're all winners here, no matter who scores more runs in game 7."

Meanwhile, in the lead-up to the All-Star game, Jim Jeffries, despite hitting a sub-par 24 home runs this season, picked up his second Home Run Derby victory. He hit 18 home runs in the first round, 12 in the second round, 8 in the third round, and 20 in the finals to beat the 18 hit by Ellis Burke of the Catherina Fighting Doves.

But for now, the team captain has a more pressing matter. Game 7. Jason Paluca, who's got big game experience, will be sent to the mound. Mountaineers manager Brad Howland said he'd have no qualms about putting Morgan back on the mound.

And for those not on the WBC team, this would be the biggest game of their lives so far. Forget the Delaclava Series. THIS was the Cyanea Series.

Unlike John Morgan, who'd faced the best national team lineups in the World Baseball Classic, Woodstock Mountaineers starting pitcher Josh Campbell had never faced this situation. Game 7, winner take all.

He struggled in the top of the first, allowing four runs on two hits, sending pitching coach Roy Satterley out to the mound.

"Settle down," Satterley said. "You're getting your pitches high. Slow it down and pitch your game."

Satterley then jogged off. Campbell drew in his breath and settled down. He worked the next five innings plus and held the Quinniville Conquistadors to one hit after the disastrous first. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers were held to two hits and one walk through five innings by Jason Paluca.

However, Manager Brad Howland sent his pitcher an important message in the bottom of the sixth after Woodstock managed a bloop single to right and a hit batsman to bring him to the plate.

"You're hitting," Howland said.

"I'm gassed," Campbell said.

"I think you've got one swing left in you," Howland said. "Use it."

The crowd groaned when Campbell was announced to hit for himself. With the count at no balls, one strike, those groans turned to wild cheers.

"Fastball, swing and a line drive down the right field line, if it stays fair, it's got a chance and it's GOOOOONE!" Mountaineers play-by-play announcer Steven Smith intoned with disbelief mixing with sheer excitement as he said the word "gone."

"Josh Campbell picked a great time to hit his first major league home run here in Game 7 of this Cyanea Series," Smith said as Campbell circled the bases with an incredulous look on his face. "And Woodstock has finally gotten on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, it's now Quinniville 4, Mountaineers 3."

Neil Grienhaus paced the dugout. He hadn't had his bullpen warming up because Paluca was purely dominant to this point. He hadn't even sent his pitching coach out to the mound. Now, he stood with his right hand poised over the telephone receiver.

In the top of the seventh, Conchita Richard relieved Campbell and promptly gave up a solo home run to give Quinniville the 5-3 lead. However, Richard it down the rest of the way through the top of the ninth. Meanwhile, shortstop Matt Embry doubled toward the gap in left centre in the bottom of the seventh to bring up third baseman Clayton Albright.

Albright slashed a line drive to right field to bring Embry home, then Skip Hale smacked a line drive over the head of the leaping second baseman into right field to send Albright to third. Then, a rare error resulted in the ball ending up in the Conquistadors dugout, sending Albright home with the score level at 5.

Little did anyone know, that's how it would remain for 14 innings. Richard gave way to Game 3 starter Kyle Endicott in the top of the 10th to groans from the crowd, who remembered his horrible Game 3 outing. However, he was on point for seven innings before Howland brought in another reliever.

A groan now escaped the lips of a Conquistadors batter when they saw lefthander Calen George. Obviously, memories of 4 2/3 innings and one hit in Game 4 came flooding back. George had a similar outing, allowing two hits through five.

"Got any more in the tank?" Howland asked George, who left the top of the 21st shaking his left arm. George shook his head, meaning Howland had to put the call into this bullpen.

"Get Morgan warmed up," Howland said.

"What?" bullpen coach Noel Mackey responded. "Are you crazy? He just threw 11 innings yesterday!"

"I'm well aware," he said. "He's our best pitcher and we need him in the game right now," Howland said.

"Morgan!" Get warmed up!" Mackey said. With a grin, Morgan stood up and strode to the mound and began his warm up tosses.

The crowd would react with surprise when Morgan was announced as the pitcher in the top of the 22nd. Eleven pitches later, Morgan was through the inning, having gotten two ground ball outs and a strikeout.

That set the stage for the bottom of the 22nd. First baseman Skip Hale stepped to the plate despite going 1-for-10 with five strikeouts. He eyed the left field wall he'd dispatched two balls over. He singled to right this time, bringing up Embry. A 12-pitch at bat resulted in a walk. Albright stepped in and swung foolishly at two bad pitches.

However, the second one skipped past the catcher, sending Hale and Embry to third and second, respectively.

At 0-2, Albright drew in his breath and exhaled, waving the bat twice, then he waited, then extended his right palm out.

"Time!"

"Time!" the Delaclav home plate umpire called.

Albright then took the next pitch for a ball. Then the next one. At 2-2, Albright got the pitch he wanted and just missed sending it deep over the 326 foot sign in left. However, the swing fooled the leftfielder and it dropped in front of him. Hale sprinted to the plate where the Mountaineers dugout had emptied and mobbed him. Soon, Embry and Albright joined in.

The Mountaineers defeated the Conquistadors in the inaugural Cyanea Series four games to three, winning all four games by one run and three of them in their final at bat.

Howland watched as his coaches rushed from the dugout onto the field. He looked around at the crowd and saw the overflow crowd of 58,120 at Fleetwood Park in rapture. He soaked in the noise of the fans cheering as loudly as he'd ever heard them. He watched his players and coaches piling on top of each other with delirium the order of the day.

And what about Hale, who'd homered to win two of the games and scored the Cyanea Series winning run?

"This was awesome!" he shouted.

"When the series began you were skeptical," a reporter asked before Hale interrupted.

"Not anymore!" he shouted with tears of joy streaming down his face and a huge smile on his face. "Not after this series!"

Howland had managed his team to two Sarzonia Series titles, but he said this was easily the highlight of his career.

"Oh, no doubt," he said. "Quinniville's a great opponent. They deserved to be here. We're so glad to do this at our park. We're champs of our whole peninsula, not just our country. This is awesome."

A red cape hung on the front wall of the Delaclava National Athletic Complex Baseball Field Number 1. Surrounding a podium next to it were thousands of people, and at the podium were many: President Vaoco Schneider, Delaclava Olympic Committee President Len Rogerre; DOC member and Delaclava Baseball Association President Moiro Kackey; DOC members Christian Caling, Keela Moschi, Emaios Turac, Likyako Echtdabachi, and Catherine Kingston; Sarzonia and Catherina Fighting Doves manager Khalil Dennis; Delaclava and Quinniville Conquistadors manager Neil Grienhaus; Conquistadors players Jim Jeffries, Denton Wolfe, Jason Paluca, Haden Holden, and Justin Semintur; manager of DNAC baseball Eric Carmenti. The crowd, press included, was buzzing with excitement at the event. Suddenly, everyone fell quiet as President Schneider approached the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for coming to the Delaclava National Athletic Complex on this fine day. This event is dedicated to the fierce yet amicable sports rivalry between Delaclava and Sarzonia, but more importantly is devoted to the friendship between these two nations. Although I cannot speak for our allies, this diplomatic relationship is undoubtedly an important part of Sarzonia's history, and for us, Delaclava, it is the most important international connection in the history of the Democratic Republic. This appears in culture, military, politics, commerce, and as the reason we are here today, sports. Here to go into more specifics, I give you the President of the Delaclava Olympic Committee, Len Rogerre."

The crowd applauded as Schneider turned to shake hands with the approaching Rogerre. The DOC president stepped up to the podium and began. "The relationship between Delaclava and Sarzonia in sports has existed almost as long as our history in international sports, period. We've faced off in one World Bowl group, one International Basketball Championships group, one World Cup qualifying group, a World Cup of Hockey knockout game, and a World Lacrosse Championship quarterfinal. Mr. Khalil Dennis here," and he gestured to Dennis "is the manager for their baseball team. We've faced off in several football friendlies, which are now known as the Cyanea Cup. Our football teams became closer than ever after tragedy struck at Sellek Christian Academy and Oppidum Sacrum High School, taking the lives of 1,815 brave students, teachers, and staff. At a domestic level, the first Cyanea Joint League was a huge success, as teams like Catherina FC and Steckholl United faced the likes of Portland Timbers and Woodstock Wild. Recently, DBA president Moiro Kackey, along with Incorporated Baseball Federation Board of Governors Chairman Louis Coletti, came up with yet another concept to further strengthen the ties between our two nations."

Rogerre stepped away, and it was Kackey's turn. "Thanks again for coming. Recently, Mr. Coletti and I decided to organize a Cyanea Series between our domestic league winners. It pitted the Quinniville Conquistadors against the Woodstock Mountaineers. I've invited five players and a manager to share their experiences with the series. Allow me to introduce Haden Holden, Denton Wolfe, Justin Semintur, Jason Paluca, Jim Jeffries, and manager Neil Grienhaus."

These six came forward, and Holden started. "When we got the call that we were going to be playing a best-of-seven series against the Mountaineers, I have to admit, we were all slightly put off. We'd played a 150-game season, fought through 26 playoff games, and we were ready to hang it up until the next season and celebrate a well-earned break. So hearing the news of a Cyanea Series wasn't exactly music to our ears."

Wolfe picked up where Holden left it. "So we were off to Woodstock for the first two games, almost a bit half-heartedly. But something happened in that first game. That was the one where Woodstock beat us 1-0 in 13 innings. They were equally as good as us, maybe even a bit better. We realized that it was an absolute gift to play them. We started to get into it in that game, and by the time it was over we were starting to be slightly glad that we got involved."

Then Semintur spoke. "As the series progressed, we saw that each team had strengths and weaknesses. The strengths of both teams came out for the most part, and apart from being a baseball series our two teams really bonded. We loved every pitch of it."

It was Paluca's turn. "Finally, it had to end, back in Woodstock, and it was an absolute marathon. It went to 22 innings. Both teams perserved and strived to never give up, much like our countries have in the past. When the series was over, we did not mourn our loss but instead celebrated seven fantastic baseball games with our brothers."

Jeffries put in his word. "From the beginning to the end of the series, we transformed from a pretty good team indifferent to these final games to an excellent team, fully enthusiastic about facing off against the champions of our northern neighbors. We all became great ballplayers, people, friends, and diplomats."

Grienhaus finished it off. "I'm incredibly proud of what my boys have done. It was a fantastic display of effort, excellence, and sportsmanship, which we all hope will translate to further friendship and, combined as one alliance, long-lasting prosperity."

As everyone applauded, Kackey retook the stage. "Mr. Coletti have discussed that in the future, we hold a Cyanea interleague of sorts. Talks are still under way, but it is certain that through the great game of baseball we will strengthen the ties between Delaclava and Sarzonia. And now, for the main purpose of this event, I present to you manager of DNAC baseball, Eric Carmenti."

The old Mr. Carmenti hobbled up to the stage. "In honor of the relationship between Delaclava and Sarzonia in the form of baseball, starting with this Cyanea Series and hopefully evolving very far, the Delaclava Olympic Committee and DNAC staff have designed this memorial to remember this rivalry. Mr. President, would you do the honor of unveiling it?"

President Schneider walked over and whipped off the red cape. People applauded loudly, and Carmenti had to wave them down so he could continue. "This plaque, as you see, has the Delaclava flag on one side and the Sarzonia flag. That small plaque below it has the results of the series between Quinniville and Woodstock, along with their logos and their full rosters. Each year we will add a new plaque with those same results. In addition, in front of each plaque we will add a few figurines of players and managers who were important in that Cyanea Series. This year, we have decided to add the following: from Woodstock, Brad Howland, John Morgan, Skip Hale, and Matt Embry: and from Quinniville, Denton Wolfe, Jim Jeffries, Neil Grienhaus, and Jake Rasch."

Kackey once again took the podium. "We thank you all for attending the honoring of a monumental event in Delaclava's and Sarzonia's sports histories, and histories in general. May this relationship long live and prosper!"

The crowd whooped and cheered wildly. They all knew that, despite the skeptics surrounding the Cyanea Series at first, it was here to stay, and much more was to come.

AL Illio Marcuzzi Award Winner: Johnny Burtoni (Confrenden Wildcats) - Burtoni had a stellar year for the Wildcats and was a major catalyst down the stretch for their appearance in the playoffs. Northeast Division W L Pct. GB
Zwischen Bears 55 53 .509 --
Noh Weir Red-Tails 53 55 .491 2
Arlington Aurora 52 56 .481 3
Weegham Rainmakers 49 59 .454 6

Close as always, just without some of the quality of past years.

Southeast Division W L Pct. GB
Kerlagrad Dragons 61 47 .565 --
Nuel Panthers 56 52 .519 5
Logrove Dolphins 56 52 .519 5
Bassabook Grey Socks 55 53 .509 6

Where all the teams are above average. I'm sure there are a lot of strong men, too. The Dragons hit for power.

West Division W L Pct. GB
Hadiln Tigers 64 44 .593 --
Inver Millers 51 57 .472 13
Belpub Wildcats 51 57 .472 13
Spenson Worms 41 67 .380 23

The Tigers burn bright. Not in the sense of them being on fire. Just in the sense of them being metaphorically hot. Not so for their cross...um. For Spenson.

Central Division W L Pct. GB
FTC Crabs 59 49 .546 --
Frischberg Flash 54 54 .500 5
102d Gray Sox 54 54 .500 5
FTC Mustangs 53 55 .491 6

Much like the Southeast Division, only slightly less good. Quite a lot of divided sentiment in Ilinge.

The Tigers swept the Bears, while the Dragons rallied in fine style after dropping the first game, walking off in vaguely godmodish style in the second (I'm sorry. It's baseball, I know, but...eh), and winning both games in the FTC. For the championship, the Dragons also won in eleven (but on the road) to tie the series after the Tigers took game one. Back and forth they went, until the Tigers walked off in ten to win game six and the title. Sorry. Maybe things will get better after we have ranks or something.

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

OOC:

My old database of Minimal League Baseball died with my last computer, but I wanted to resurrect it because I like playing with OOTP, and I'm thinking of returning to the WBC so will need some backstory for my players. I therefore created a new Minimal League Baseball system and, for reasons that will be explained IC, simmed 25 years in one go; I will be writing up some IC posts of results for this thread, as well as using the top players in the system for my new look WBC team.

The only problem is I forgot to edit the World database beforehand, and thus despite setting Foreigner Percentage at 0, a few non-Quodite [non-Japanese, in the game matrix] players have crept in. Bear in mind all subsequent comments assume "Dude, why do you care?" is not a valid response.

This isn't a problem in the free agent pool, as I can manually delete them, but this would distort the financial system with established players: for example, the best catcher in the system is foreign, and if I delete him, his club would be disadvantaged. It also messes up the historical data a bit: for example, the holders of records such as most wins in a season and most games in a career are both foreigners. I suppose I could just ICly claim that all of them come from Quintessence of Dust anyway.

But, seeing as it's an opportunity to reintegrate with the international baseball community, if anyone wants to "claim" these players as coming from their own country, they can. Note that I am not, at this stage, accepting foreign free agents - I am just looking to explain away those already imposed on me by the sim.

What this means is I will keep them in the database, and instead of coming from Mexico, or Venezuala, or Costa Rica, say that they come from your nation. If they are current players I can either keep them in the game, or "retire" them back to your own leagues. Either way I am happy to provide the in-game data (ratings and stats) if you wish to use them yourselves; at the same time, by taking on the player you're under no obligation to ever do anything with them. It's just a way for me to explain, really, that that guy who won six Great Glove awards at third base hails from your country, rather than from Canada.

There are currently 30 active players in the system, 4 coaches, and about 70 retired players. I don't think the career minor leaguers, or even the guys (I'm also ok with non-guys, by the way) who make the majors but don't make a splash; I'm most concerned with explaining the former Award winners, the former and current record holders, and - for those familiar with OOTP11 - those who appear in the various reports.

If you would claim some players, TG me, thanks; otherwise, look out for some IC posts updating Minimal League Baseball.

Break News
ViZionarian Up-and-Comers Hollier, Lenard Posted

Jarrell Hollier's team, the 2011 World Series Champion Boa Vista Pirates, as well as Tanner Lenard's team, the 2011 ViZionarian League champion Vitalita ViZionarians, have post these two young players in a private posting bid war. Bids are to be send via Telegram to ViZion by 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (Los Angeles, Seattle time) June 12th.

The winner will then be able to negotiate a contract with the player they won in the bidding war, and should they sign, the posting fee will be send to said players previous team. Below is the scouting report in the two young players.

Jarrell Hollier Scouting Report
This speedy middle infielder can do plenty. He turns two with the best of them. He's speedy - in 2011, his first full season, he lead the Amazon League with 81 steals. He's a leader on and off the field, having won the World Series MVP award. Drafted out of high school Holy Hill, Azhukali, he is well on his way to being a super-star. While he may not have great power, being able to do everything else so well at only twenty one as a middle infielder makes him one of the games most valuable assets.

Tanner Lenard Scouting Report
This power hitter, drafted by the Vitalita ViZionarians out of his home town of Vitalita, is well known for absolutely crushing mammoth shots to all parts of the field. His contact ability has been improve, as evidenced by his rising batting average, however his strikeouts continue to be league-worst. At twenty five years of age, he should just be entering his prime, however he is known to have injury issues. Should he stay healthy, he's a perennial all-star and MVP candidate, and is as likely as anyone to be the leading home run hitter - he lead the ViZionarian League in home runs with 40 in 2009.
