National Journal
Blowout puts hosts in the Semis

It's been quite a long time since the Saugeais Baseball team has had anything to cheer about. The last World Baseball Classic left a sour taste in the mouths of the Rangers and their fans, with only a first round exit after a mediocre group stage. Even the previous Saugeais Baseball tournament, meant to showcase that Saugeais can play with the best in the world, but ultimately lost to runners' up Churchma in the quarterfinals. But now, with increased vigor and determination, the Rangers have been at the top of their game, having not lost a single match in the 2nd running of the Saugeais Tournament. One would think that the majority of the praise would go to the manager, Greg Hanson, for putting together and training a solid team, and you would be right. But without the powerful bats of Jacques Benoit and Tuffy Jackson, or the strong pitching from starter Jim Bochy and closer Ringo Grenier, this team would not be were they are right now: staring down the road to a title at their own tournament.

The Rangers, while not losing a game, did have some troubles performing early on. In the series against Carasatoga, starter Jim Bochy had to work some tricky pitches to get out of a couple bases loaded jams. All the while the bats were nearly silent, save for two singles by Takashi Honda in the first and fifth innings. Carasatoga jumped out to the early 2-0 lead when the powerful third baseman blasted a two-run home run to left center field. The Rangers took their time to respond, but when they did it came at the best of times. In the bottom of the eight inning, the Rangers rallied with Honda doubling to right to start it off. Then Tuffy Jackson blasted a double off the right-center field wall, scoring Honda. After Benoit struck out, catcher Dick Robinson belted a line drive off the left field foul pole for a home run, giving the Rangers the 3-2 lead and, after a flawless inning by closer Grenier, the win.

The next game proved to be even more of a nail-biter, as the game went into extra innings. Saugeais, the virtual away team in this match up, jumped out to a 2-0 lead early just as their counterparts did in the previous game, with Tuffy Jackson and Dick Robinson scoring. But unlike the last game, Carasatoga did not waste time to tie it back up. In the very next inning, the Carasatogans lit up Richard Cochon for 5 hits, driving in their 2 runs. After settling down, Cochon then went on a streak of retiring 14 batters in a row before surrendering another hit. Unfortunately, the Rangers couldn't capitalize on the good pitching of Cochon with hitting of their own, and the game remained tied until it went into extras. In the 10th inning with Saugeais up to bat first, Dick Robinson led off with a single shot to center. Three batters later with Robinson on third and Christophe Lind on second, Paul Roland, with his quick swing, drove the ball deep to center field, where it bounced off the wall and allowed Robinson and Lind to score. That gave Saugeais the 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning though, Grenier had a little trouble. With runners at the corners with one out, however, he forced the Carasatogan batter to hit a ground ball into a double play to end the game and the series.

The series against Western Cuba wasn't much of a match, with only the first game coming relatively close. Saugeais won, 4-2, but after the Rangers lead 4-0 going into ninth, many people questioned why manager Hanson didn't put in Ringo Grennier right away. He instead put in the mostly untested Steven Richardson, who's only other international competition was the 18th World Baseball Classic, and even then he had limited playing time. So you could imagine what nerves this man had when he stepped on to the mound. It was a near disaster as he surrendered hit after hit to the W. Cuban batters; fortunately they were all singles, but still two runs off of six hits is no way to pitch. So he was pulled and Grenier thrown in to save the day, which he did and helped Saugeais move one step closer to the title.
The second match was a complete blowout giving the W. Cubans little chance to make a move. With the scoring anchored with home runs by Jackson, Pierre Gardin, and Lind, Saugeais handily defeated their opponents by the final of 10-2.

Saugeais is now sitting pretty in the semis, where they will await the winner of the Myrinthea / Planeta de los Muertos match tomorrow night. And on the other side of bracket Colmark moves on to the semifinals as well, where they wait on the winner of the Virabia / Lycrabon match tomorrow night as well.

Matchday 4 cutoff. Will Saugeais take their own title?

Finals matchday 4

Saugeais 6, Colmark 3 [Saugeais wins series 3-1]

I'll remain humble in victory, but congratulations to Colmark for making the finals. And thank you to all who participated, but due to the low turnout this time around I will postpone any of my future baseball tournaments. Once again, thank you all for the turnout to help make this possible.
