Lake Speed won the Whittoria 500, after starting around mid-pack and leading the most laps. Here's our race recap:

Image

Mark Granby won the pole for the race, with Simo Hayha of Alex Whitt Racing qualifying second. The field was back and forth between strung out single file and three wide racing, providing plenty of exciting competition.

Image
Mark Granby leads the field: (in order) Simo Hayha, Forrest Langford, Zach Whitt, Greg Woodard, Alex Whitt, Aindreas Siosalach, Doug Pederson, Calvin Keller, a wheel....?

The first caution of the day occured on lap 54. On lap 53 the field went 4 wide at the front all the way around the track. But as the leaders came off turn 4 Horace Padarson drifted up into Alexander Tingis, who got into Antonio Oglesby and triggered "The Big One." A total of 6 cars were involved, though most of them were able to continue; only Ronald Morrison was unable to continue.

Trouble on the front straightaway!

Image
Close Call

Parker Langford led at the caution, and would win the race off pit road with a solid pit stop. The race went back to green on lap 60.

Image

It would prove to be the only caution of the day, as the race went 140 consecutive laps green. Lake Speed, Greg Schafer, Parker Langford, and Simo Hayha fought at the front for lead most of the race, although Alex Whitt, Mark Granby, and Zach Whitt led for about 20 laps in the middle of the race.

After a few rounds of green flag pitsops the field began to stretch out, and many cars ended up a lap down (only 6 were left on the lead lap). The top four of Speed, Langford, Schafer, and Hayha managed to break away with a pack of lapped cars. The lead changed many times, but when Lake Speed took the lead at the white flag he would not relent.

WAC ROUNDUP

THE GOOD....

Lake Speed
-Lake Speed won the Whittoria 500, somewhat dominating the race as he lead the most laps and never fell out of the top ten in the field. He now leads in points. Impressive for a driver/owner, and although restrictor plate races can be a crapshoot we expect him to do well throughout the season.

ALEX WHITT RACING
-After leaving Shinbaum Racing, Whitt's new team was near the front all day, with Simo Hayha and Whitt himself finishing in the top ten. Forrest Langford ran with them near the front but at the end fell back due to a late pit stop.

JAMES DAVIS RACING
-James Davis fielded two top ten teams at Daytona, with both Greg Schafer and Greg Woodard finishing 4th and 10th respectively.

THE BAD...
ARNHAM RENNSPORT
-Horace Padarson and Teddy Scholz struggled at the Whittoria 500, with Padarson getting caught up in the race's only caution and Scholz failing to keep up with the leaders and stay on the lead lap.

TED GINN RACING
-TGR also had cars caught up in the lap 53 wreck, and overall just failed to produce. Stewart MacDonald was one of two who had to retire from the race after the caution.

NEW DRIVER SIGNINGS

Both Arnham Rennsport and Victory Racing signed drivers in time for the Peach Blossom 400. Tyler McMillan will drive the #3 car for Arnham Rennsport, which has already garnered sponsors from Shell Pennzoil. Gordon Hughes has signed as Victory Racing's first driver.

WAC ROUNDUP

The trend seems to be 2 in a row, as we've had two winners through four races, and though points haven't been updated it's safe to assume that Alex Whitt has overtaken Lake Speed in the standings.

THE GOOD

1.) Alex Whitt. He's won two in a row, one with a last lap pass over Mark Granby at Pocono and the second running away with the victory at North Wilkesboro. Known as "The Mayor" for his commanding, aggressive driving style, he's also posted two top ten finishes.

2.) Greg Woodard. After a slow start to the season, Woodard managed to rebound last week with a second place finish, although had it not been for a late caution and lapped traffic he very well could have taken the checkered flag.

3.) Lake Speed. He has struggled the past two races, but he won the first two races of the season and still sits high in the points.

THE BAD

1.) Teddy Scholz. Equipment failures, not keeping pace, Scholz has had trouble keeping up. If he wants to be a title contender he'll have to step it up before he falls too far back.

2.) Simo Hayha. We're hesitant to put him on the bad side, but his performance since a second place finish at Daytona has started to waver, with 22nd and 23rd place efforts at Pocono and North Wilkesboro

3.) The rest of Arnham Rennsport. Randy Morrison and Horace Padarson will have to do better if they want to dominate this series like they did the WAC Big West Tour.

MILLION DOLLAR WINNER

Antonio Oglesby wins 60 WACky Laps in dramatic fashion

Antonio Oglesby did everything he could to win the 60 WACky Laps--and it all paid off.

He sat on the pole, stayed in the top-ten all race, and even moved a few drivers out of the way. Initially Oglesby dropped back, falling to 18th. But when there were about 20 laps to go Oglesby had worked his way back up to the front of the field. The race was anybody's to win: at a track that could be considered Bristol and Daytona packed into one, the top ten cars in the field all had a shot at the checkered flag.

Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the race saw driver/owner Alex Whitt, after falling to the back early, drive his way to the front and lead the race. But with a million dollars on the line, Antonio Oglesby would not be denied. Going into turn three on lap 53, Oglesby drove into The Mayor, sending him into the wall and collecting five other cars, including teammate Forrest Langford. The field went green with three laps to go, with Antonio leading all the way up to the end, as caution came out with a lap and a half to go.

WAC ROUNDUP

The World 600 finished in spectacular form, as Forrest Langford, Zach Whitt, and Ronald Harrison battled for the win all the way down to the final lap. Whitt, who dominated the last race at Charlotte, led 67 laps on his way to the victory, his first of the season. Whitt is now a serious contender in the title hunt, as the current point system rewards wins with 200 points; second place only pays out 68 points. The race's first caution involved five cars, as Aindreas Siosalach (pronounced "Andrew Chisolm") turned around Geoff Arndham going into turn three. Siosalach managed to drive away unscathed, but Arndham was struck three times, twice in the driver's side door. Antonio Oglesby, Aqunii Hyu'Tojerii, and Alex Whitt all made contact with Arndham and were forced to retire. Parker Langford had a gearbox failure ten laps into the race.

Calvin Keller and Lake Speed both posted top ten finishes.

The Ontario 500 saw a record number of cautions at twelve for 48 laps, and two cars turning over on their roofs; both Simo Hayha and Tyler McMillan got out of their cars unscathed, and Hayha managed to continue driving for a few laps.

Greg Schafer picked up his first win of the year, jumping to 7th in the point standings. 3 out of the 4 Tuttle boys are in the top ten in points (Parker Langford sits in 13th, currently).

They call him the "Funkmaster."

Zach Whitt won his second race of the year in dominating fashion at the Big River Mountain Speedway nestled in the mountains of southwest Virginia (or as most Whittorians call it, "Left Virginia"). The race saw only two lead changes between three drivers, and Whitt led most of the race, 130 out of 150 laps. His nickname comes from his unique style of racing at short tracks. Early in his career he developed the habit of "wiggling" through corners on the local short track circuit, to which other drivers poked fun at him for, calling it "funky". But they weren't laughing when he began to beat them on a regular basis, mastering all the tracks the regional leagues visited and showing he wasn't afraid to move people out of the way if necessary (without ramming them into the wall, which takes skill). Eventually he moved up to the WAC Southeast Series with his brother, where they both one a few titles.

Whitt's form was perfect, lapping all but two drivers in the field--including his brother and cousins. And in a series where there's an almost even balance of short tracks, superspeedways, and intermediate tracks, Whitt is in a position to win a title if he can continue winning where he's best.

Archie Ginn and Aindreas Siosalach both posted top ten finishes, making huge improvements on their previous performances this year (Ginn in particular).

I wish I had gotten back into NS earlier so I could join the full season :-P
