WBC XVIII preview:

2 years ago, history was made as Newmanistan (or should that be Newwomanistan???) won their 4th WBC title, becoming the all-time leader in titles. But they had to overcome a 3-0 deficit against Tarrentum to do so. While this WBC's championship will be a best 3-of-5 affair; The Rockets are not the favorites to win WBC 18. That would be Cassadaigua, the hosts of WBC 18. The women of Cassadaigua are hosting the event for the first time and are looking at becoming just the 2nd nation to hoist the trophy on home soil. Qazox and Newmanistan have never done that, while at least the Rockets have done well at home, reaching the semis in all 3 hostngs.

Tarrentum and Silver beach, the suprise two semifinalists retrn as well but they won't be sneaking up on anyone this time around. Of the two teams, Tarrentum has the better chance of returning the the semifinals. Amongst the dark horses that could make a suprising semifinal run are former hosts The Babbage Islands. Coming off a succesful World Cup co-hosting with Cassadaigua; TBI could emerge as a true contender this year.

On the flip side, the 2 teams that will fall back into the pack this year will be Western Cuba and Qazox. That's right, Qazox will not repeat WBC 17's semifinal run, and Western Cuba is a bit overrated. Qazox will make the playoffs, but not get out of the 1st round, while Western cuba will not advance past the group stage. Qazox' pitching has been too inconsistent for too long, and Western Cuba isn't going to have the same luck as they have had in the past.

Of the newcomers to the WBC, a few look like potential playoff teams. Carasatoga has recently emerged as a sporting nation and have had some good results as of late, and the WBC should not be any different. Colmark is in the same boat as Carasatoga, and while they've had a slightly rougher time, don't be suprised if they manage to beat Cassadaigua or TBI in the group stage. Civil Citizenry and Cabric (an awful lot of C's in this WBC...) could be teams to watch as well, though Civil Citizenry probably will have an easier time than Cabric.

So just who will take home the 18th WBC title? Here's our predictions, and remember, we guarentee to be at least 1% correct or your money back.

Cassadaigua 7-1

DH?: No
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: Nope
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: TG me first.
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes, stuff like fights, barking at the pitcher, brawls and such.

Manager: Paul Rudolf
[ The manager of the Nordics baseball team since it's founding. Rudolf has lead his squad to eight play-off berths, four division titles, four final four appearances, and of course, the big one, winning a WBC title in WBC 11. Often thought of as an 'old school' type of manager, one who preaches good baserunning, defense and manufactured runs. Though he is known to keep his starting pitching on a tight leash, if he's not regarded as one of the best managers in the world at this point, what's wrong with you guys?]
Bench Coach: Alex Cremer
1st Base coach: Albin Linder
3rd Base coach: Katrine Alberts
Pitching coach: Johann Hilgers
Hitting coach: Kathe Lohmeyer

Batting Order:
CF - Gemma Kempas (Switch/Right) #30
[ Since appearing in the big leagues, Gemma has replicated her college career. She is a high-average, low power type with speed to burn, and is prone to incredibly aggressive base running. Her presence on first guarantees an eventual attempt on second for sure. ]
RF - Kathrin Jordan (Switch/Right) #22
[ Now a veteran, Kathrin receives a significant bump up in the order. A good mix of average, power, and speed she is also the Nordics most experienced outfielder with the retirements of Marksworth and Rykov. Much will be expected of her. ]
1B - Johnny Stryker (L/L) #5
[Now a grizzled veteran at 32 years old, Stryker is still an amazing five-tool player. He hits for average. He hits for power. His speed is positively explosive on the basepaths, and he's a defensive wizard to cap it all off. He also possess many intangibles that are only boosted given his superstar status. He is a spark-plug for his team both on and off the field, thus giving him the name of "The Catalyst.". ]
C - Kevin Monroe (R/L) #6
[ Having firmly established him self as one of, if not the best hitting catcher in the WBC today, Kevin Monroe has been bumped up to the number four spot. He has never batted below .300 in his career, nor has he failed to hit at least 30 homeruns in eight years. Behind the plate he has proven to become an excellent catcher indeed when it comes to calling games and throwing out runners. Though perhaps overshadowed by Johnny Stryker, Monroe has been one of the most consistent and talented hitters in the game. ]
2B - Michael Hammer (Switch/Right) #24
[ The MVP of the 1st Keisler cup, Hammer went on to be drafted by the Nouva Yourk Nightmares, and after a brief stint in the minors has gone on to become a ROY winner. Since becoming the Nordics full time second baseman two years ago, Hammer has certainly lived up to his hype. A news article describes him thusly: "He has the potential to be the greatest offensive second baseman in the history of the Reich. He treats opposing pitchers like you or I would treat a thanksgiving turkey, carving into them mercilessly. He can hit line drives into the gap, lift the ball into the seats, and slap the ball between the infielders and the outfielders. He is not a high-ball nor a low-ball hitter. He is an any-ball hitter. Through this all though, he maintains a modest and empathetic personality. He frequently hangs his head, refusing to make eye contact with the pitcher after he hits a homerun, almost as if he is embarrassed. His parents should have probably named him "Clark" and he could undoubtedly rock a red cape and tights with the letter "M" super-imposed on the chest just as well as he does a cap and cleats. He is also a solid player on D, but is prone to make aggressive plays, such as going for the lead runner or the one breaking for the plate than the sure out. But he is an athlete and can make those diving stops and those jumping throws as good as anyone else. ]
LF - Stella Kallow (Right/Right) #22
[ With the retirement of Rykov, the Nordics will be relying on Kallow to be their power hitting outfielder. A fantastic hitter with a high average through her college career (.328) and power numbers. She can smash the ball 400 feet with great regularity. However, she is prone to mental errors both on the field and on the bases, often forgetting to hustle on those line drives, and botching easy flyouts and turning them into extra base hits for her opponents. Her 'whatever' attitude also carries over to the plate at times, as she can be called out looking here and there.
SS - Cassandra Tilgner (Left/Right) #33
[ Jill Haviland leaves some big shoes to fill at shortstop, and Cassandra Tilgner will have to make a sustained effort to prove she is a worthy heir. Despite posting some monster stats in her young career, she is a 'feast or famine' type player, lighting up for four or five hits one night and posting a hat trick the next. Her inconsistency if the reason she's not higher in the order. ]
3B - Lee Baynes (Switch/Right) #11
[ Baynes is a superb defensive third baseman, racking of three golden gloves in his four year major league career. Around the horn double plays? Barehanded scoops? Jumping throws? He can do it all. He also has a decent bat. ]

-Pitchers Spot-

Pitchers:
SP - Alexandria Dassow (Righty) #12
[ If you are expecting the gross arsenal of pitches of Sofie Behm, or the over-whelming power of Tommy Thunder you will be disappointed. Dassow is however a tremendous finesse pitcher, location and quality strikes her specialty. She has command of only three pitches, but each is money. A 92+ MPH fastball, a slider, and a circle change. She has accomplished much in a young career, and despite the fact that last time around she didn't exactly handle her promotion to the number one spot well in the last WBC the Nordics still have much faith in her. ]
SP - Sofie Behm (Lefty) #20
[ Sofie is a making her sixth WBC appearance and is only 28 years old to boot. She has quite the arsenal consisting of a 93-98 MPH fastball, a cutter, a slider, a curveball, and a splitter.]
SP - Sven Grewe (Left/Left) #28
[ The young southpaw, and a star pitcher of the Keisler Cup championship run. She, like Hammer has gone on to become a star in the big leagues. She has an overpowering 98 MPH fastball, a nasty slider, a nice cutter and one of the best circle-changeups you'll see. She hits her spots but has the tendency to tilt rather badly when calls go against her. If and when that happens, she becomes extremely volatile and wild. She has even been known to break out in tears and nervous break downs on the mound. ]
SP - Lena Wölk (Right/Right) #42
[ Like Sven, Lena is also something of a power pitcher. She has a 95+ mph fastball and a 12-6 curveball, a two-seam fastball and a yo-yo of a changeup to top it all off. Lena has produced several strong seasons in the domestic league, even winning a Paul Gil award. Not subject to the emotional outbreaks Sven is.]
SP - Viktoria Growe (Right/Right)
[ Her side-arm delivery is sure to give opposing hitters fits. She has a 95+ MPH fastball, a two-seam fastball, a curve and a splitter to make up her arsenal. She is never afraid to establish the inside of the plate, and as a result she has an unusually high hit batter rate. ]

Bullpen
MR Felix Rudorffer (Right/Right)
[ Need some innings eaten up? This is your go-to guy. He has a 92+ MPH fastball, a slider and a circle-change up. He hits his spots and doesn't walk many, but he can try to over do it when it comes to throwing strikes. ]
MR Amelinda Fischer (Left/Left)
[ A left-handed sinkerballer, Fischer is another inning eater. She pitches to contact and with her nasty sinker most hitters will have trouble getting anything but a grounde off of her. She also has a cut fastball and a curve at her disposal. ]
MR Susanne Berger (Right/Right)
[ When you needy a reliever with an arsenal, look no further. This girl has a 95+ MPH fastball, a slurve, a cutter, a screwball and a splitter and good control over all of these pitches. ]
SU Alina Hauser (Left/Left)
[ Submarine delivery style throws off hitters. She makes use of a rising fastball, a two-seam fastball, a slider and a change up to get her outs. )
CP Marlene Herrmann (Right/Right)
[ She'll come in throwing darts with her 95+ fastball. She also makes use of a nasty 12-6 curveball, a splitter and a sinker to get those precious final three outs. ]

Bench:
Justin Leitner (Center fielder, Right/Right)
[ A tremendous outfield bat off the bench, Justin Leitner flashes the five-tools. In the mold of Dmitri Rykov of WBC fame, puts up a tremendous average and large power numbers. He has great speed which helps him both on the basepaths and on the outfield. Never afraid to put his body on the line to make plays. ]
Melina Clever (Right fielder, Right/Right)
[ Need both a strong arm and a good contact bat off the bench? Clever is your go-to girl. Slap-hitting and long at-bats are her thing, not extra-base hits and RBIs. However she has a cannon for an arm and great range in the outfield. ]
Rainer Kral (Third baseman/First baseman, Right/Right)
[ The corner infield's reputation for housing the sluggers of the lineup hold true with this kid. He can smash a ball into the alley or over the wall with the best of them. He is also a solid option at either position. However, a mile-long swing and a tendency to strike out have him on the bench rather than the lineup. ]
Regina Ley (Second baseman/Shortstop, Right/Right)
[ Your typical .300 hitter, Ley also flashes signs of defensive brilliance and power. She hasn't failed to hit at least 25 homeruns in the last three years. Not quite the monster Hammer is, she is still proven to be a far more consistent hitter than Tilgner. Expect the two to battle for a starting spot in the next WBC. ]

THE ROCKET REPORT PRESENTS:

The All-World Team!!!

(OOC Disclaimer: I know some teams better then others based on my roleplaying history, so this will probably have a bias towards rosters and nations that I have more of a history with. Don’t take OOC offense if your player is omitted that you think should be included, but taking IC offense is just fine).

Pocono City- As the World gets set to try and top the defending champion Rockets, it’s time to select an all-world team once again. The team is based on the players accomplishments in past World Baseball Classics, so first time nations will have to wait until the next time we do something like this to look for some of their players.

So, let’s get to it.

Manager: Christina Sanders (Newmanistan): If we need to explain, you haven’t been paying attention. For the first time nations, Sanders has been the only manager in Newmanistan WBC history, still.

#1) Courtney Ratigan (Newmanistan)- This is a spot that could have been up for some debate prior to WBC 17, but as other top teams struggled for random reasons, the Rockets pitching staff delivered. Down 3-0 in the championship series, Newmanistan got the win in game 4, but you will forever hear about the back-to-back brilliant performances turned by Courtney Ratigan and Jessica Brasfield (look down one spot) and games five and six that was the defining moment of that series. That’s what is easiest to remember, but Courtney has been leading the rotation for a few Classics now. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more accomplished, except for this next person.

#2) Jessica Brasfield (Newmanistan)- Jessica is behind Courtney here more because if she is behind Ratigan on the Rockets rotation, she should be here as well. The aforementioned effort in the championship series is part of the reason, but don’t forget her big effort in game three of the semifinals as well. Jessica truly became “Brashfield” in the last Classic, and got in the head of Tarrentum star Gina Torretta. The reason she is behind Ratigan is that going into WBC 17, Ratigan had been more accomplished. Each have two WBC Championship rings and have plenty time for their third.

#3) Liona Marrada (Tarrentum)- Performed admirably for the runners-up of the last Classic, and is seeing her international status rise. The Falcons staff is a little bit like the Rockets’ with her and Natalie Pessotto, but unlike Ratigan and Brasfield, the Falcons starters do not have that big defining moment yet.

#4) Natalie Pessotto (Tarrentum)- As is the case with our pitchers, there isn’t much separating the Falcons’ top two starters. Marrada gets the nod because of the last Classic even though many Newmanistanian analysts feel that Natalie is the better pitcher, with an impressive performance at home in that league of theirs. They need a ring or two, though, before going ahead of our starters.

#5) Alexandria Dassow (Tocrowkia): Gets the nod over Brad Baxter over Sarzonia, because you have to be fair and look at her entire career in the Classic, and not just the Nordics debacle of last time out. She didn’t have easy shoes to fill when she replaced Tommy Thunder in the top spot, and we think she has done a pretty good job. Possibly poised for a big rebound (like many others in that lineup).

Set-up Reliever: Kayla Lutrick (Zwangzug)- We can get away with sneaking the ace of the Zebras rotation into this spot because the Zebras are technically, not listing people as starters and relievers. Fair game. Enjoy, Kayla.

Closer: Rodger Sekera (Western Cuba)- A closer that wears #99 on the 6th ranked team has got to be good right? Well, right now we seem to be lacking a real great international closer. There’s a lot of young ones on the roster of higher ranked teams.

Positional Players:

Catcher: Kevin Monroe (Tocrowkia)- Replaces Cassadaigua’s Rachel Weston, who held this spot in each of the last two all-world team reports as Rachel seems to have moved on. The question on this was do you take him or Valerio Utteroni of Tarrentum? As good as the Falcon backstop is, Kevin has a lot of tenure now behind the plate. Heck, his career corresponded with our Natalie Monroe, who, of course is still better. We will say this though: Monroe better step up this year.

1st Base: Martin LaPlante (Milchama)- Wait, what about you-know-who? Mr. Stryker? Someone has to take the heat for the Nordics failures (and if “The Catalyst” didn’t spark the team, then who better to blame?), and while Tocrowkia struggled, Milchama had a good little season, which was led by this power threat. 52 HR’s in Milchama is an impressive feat. Is Stryker losing it? Well, LaPlante isn’t. Keep an eye on the up-and-coming Julie Poulin of Cassadaigua at this spot, too.

2nd Base: Jayde Sinclair (Qazox)- A couple people you can look to here, but the player who has done the most BEFORE this Classic at this spot is Sinclair, in our opinion. Qazox has moved her up in the lineup after a good Classic to try and produce more offense, which shows how important she is. In all honesty, there are three players we think might be better then her in the long run and one of them is our own Courtney Stafford. Also Michael Hammer of Tocrowkia and Dessea Vallena-Favella of Tarrentum. But we have to judge this by where they are now. Hammer needs to step up, Stafford seems to be on the verge of a huge breakout as well, and Vallena-Favella is a catalyst of the Falcon offense. They may in fact, all have a better WBC 18 then Sinclair, but right now, it’s Jayde’s spot. It was easier when Carrie Nicolette could automatically be filled in here.

Shortstop: Kristen Wheeler (Newmanistan)- Kristen has lived up to her nickname of “Miss Clutch” during the World Baseball Classic, including several big moments in the last one we just finished. She is an RBI machine, and has been an essential component of the Rockets offense now for four Classics, and has herself two nice shiny championship rings. Other then Wheeler, we’ve always liked what Chris Spotanelli has brought to the Sarzonia lineup. But this really isn’t close.

3rd Base: Meghan Butler (Newmanistan)- Meghan has not two, but actually three WBC Championship rings by virtue of having been an international rookie in #12. These days, she is now the cleanup batter for the Rockets, and the captain of the team in #15 and #17. It’s an impressive resume even before you start considering all of her home runs or big hits that she has been able to produce at this level.

(We’ve chosen who we think are the overall top 3 outfielders and then just put them in these spots):

Left Field: Courtney Weinman (Newmanistan)- Courtney is a lot like Butler, although she only has the two rings, having started in the 13th. She is coming off yet another terrific Classic, and is a no-brainer selection for the all-World team.

Center Field: Brittany Anderson (Cassadaigua)- We’ll put Brittany in our lead off spot as she is for this years host nation. She approached 100 SB’s at home according to the numbers we were given, and probably at present is the most accomplished base-stealer in the tournament given that Stacie Meadows is no longer with the Rockets. Plus, we have to have some from the host nation on the team.

Right Field: Carl Holmes (Qazox)- Socki Lewis where are you? We were going to put Joe Thomas of Tarrentum here, but, well, see below. And what about Cassadaigua having a WBC-rookie outfielder hitting cleanup? Will Brooke Houghton be here next time? Well anyway, we slide the cleanup batter of Qazox here for now.

The What the Heck are They Thinking Honorable Mention- Tarrentum manager Ferdinand Cossomo isn’t sold on starting Joe Thomas on a daily basis. Again, we see an example of Cossomo managing his international team like it’s a domestic team. We can all remember how he screwed up in game four, instead of going for the kill against a terribly slumping Newmanistan batting lineup at the time, put a pitcher on the mound who puts the ball in play. That woke the Rockets up. Put them in the position where they had to then face Ratigan and Brasfield, and it all went downhill for the Falcons. But all of that is old news. Joe Thomas, in our opinion, was the most consistent member of the Tarrentum batting lineup, especially in the final series. And from all accounts, his last season in the IBL was strong. He’s a player who steps up his game. So his reward? A likely platoon with Andrew “I can’t field to save my life” O’Higgins. Furthermore, O’Higgins reportedly has a bit of an attitude problem. So let’s platoon the guy who’s all character and all heart like Thomas, who played very well in the last Classic with a guy who is a bit selfish. That just does wonders for your locker room, Mr. Cossomo. Unbelievable.

Oh, no, here we go again

ST. CATHERINE - As previously mentioned, the rebound Classic for the Blue Jays started with the group stage snag. Not only were the defending champions in Lycrabon's group, but the Rockets' opening game would be at Riverside Stadium, where they completed their amazing -to everyone but them - comeback from a 3-0 defecit. But, the Jays have battled these Rockets -figuratively and at least once literally - from Barnettsville's first appearance in WBC 13 to the present. Tom Benson, starter for the opening game, said it best: "We've seen how these girls operate. They can be beaten - The Falcons (Tarrentum, last Classic's runner-up) proved that. Frank (Thompson) has said this is most likely his last run, so our goal is to send them back to Jessicaville. First inning, we'll set the tone." It's rumored that that might mean some beanball action from the blue Jay pitching staff, but our reporters got the Clinton response: no confirmation, no denial.

President Hodge has confirmed his throwing out of the first pitch, but it is unclear currently whether he will stay for the game itself. LSPN and LSPN Radio will carry all eight games, and is in negotiations for other games in Group 4 as well as other big games involving the hosts Cassadaigua, Qazox, amd the aforementioned Tarrentum.

Objections before this Judge of the Court

So Newmanistan has released their "All-World" Team. While many of my fellow Tarrentians praise the inclusion of Liona Marrada and Natalie Pessotto for making the starting rotation, I have not been fooled by the Siren's Song emanating from the Simpsonian Throne! Why should we stand with stilted breath on every word that comes out of the Newamanistani press? Are the baby blue press corps to be hallowed and deified just because they have "seen the world" longer than most other nations? Well I say, "No more!" to imperial-minded rocketry demonstrations. Today I will answer the various public questions about the supposed "enlightened" state of Newmanistani sports reporting and analysis.

A Western cuban Closer?
Where does a Western cuban pitcher ever factor in to a discussion for the obviously biased All-World Team? Have the Newmanistani's the brain worm?? At best Western cuba is a rising mid-level power but far more obvious is the team's lack of consistency throughout the past Classic's. It has even been reported that concessions were made for the late entry of the W.c. team becuase their advisors, socialists I might add, failed to file the correct forms with their own government so that they missed the true deadline for registrations! And yet here is the Newmanistani sports press [NSP] throwing their name out to the global baseball community - really it's an attempt to appease the sunsetbound reds. A much better choice for the Newmanistani's would have been to coronate Miss Keisler early and marry her off to a life of baseball ease...

Jayde Sinclair...WTF?
Obviously the committee responsible for this decision was quite drunk and high on "night-life drugs" when they chose this delightful addition to the All-World Team. The relationship between Qazox and the rest of the world has been, at the very least, stressed as of late. Many feel that the world would be a better place with out the Q or their Continuum running around the baseball universe. Though the nation continued the "tradition alike others" during the formative years of the WBC, I don't believe that fact alone is cause enough to throw Mister Sinclair's name out there as the top second baseman in the world. Clearly the pick should have gone to Tarrentum's own Dessea Vallena-Favella - the Falcons only current WBC Hall-of-Famer. Let's boil this down to pure stats:
ABHRBBAVGIBBSBCSHRRBIOBPwOBASLGOPSISOPowSpdSecAPA/G
2531295611.51063113481.530.6741.0991.629.56532.43.7514.58

We can see throughout Favella's WBC career that she has dominated all other second base players. Still, the NSP refuses to recognize her greatness. For all of their gloating - they sure are sore individual losers.

They said what? About whom?
So apparently Ferdinand Cossomo isn't a big deal in Newmanistan. I understand that, he's not a big deal in Meddicia either, but then again, Cossomo didn't orchestrate the best playoffs that Tarrentum has ever seen. I would like to know why the NSP has the right to mock Mr. Cossomo and his expert managerial skills. Was it not their own Ms. Sanders who almost cost Newmanistan their first WBC Finals - and that in a sweep? Sure, the Rockets were able to pull it out in seven games - but many think that the grind of the tournament was just getting to be too much for some of the Falcons players. Clearly Toretta was affected in her lack of patience at the plate. But to say that Cossomo doesn't know how to manage a game because of his style is pure scat! And no where in the Falcons press release (with analysts comments, etc) did I see mentioned that Joe Thomas wouldn't be starting. Apparently the NSP wasn't paying attention - which is nothing new.

In closing, do not be sucked in by the small olive branches that the NSP hands out with their "All-World" team. They would love nothing better than to just put up their "All-Newmanistan" team and be done with it.

He stares at the screen. Cool article getting ready for WBC18, thought you'd like it, a friend has e-mailed. He wonders how his friend found it, how many friends of friends it's been forwarded through. Whether it was a desperate attempt, a calculated risk from someone with nothing left to lose, just a coincidence...

He reads it again.

No, seriously. As awful as WTB can get, I know I'll sort of miss it if they can't rustle anybody up for this tournament. There's something great about the immediacy and, at the same time, obscurity of it all--you can be caught up in the moment and yet sort of confused too, in a way that doesn't really work for other media.

I'm thinking of a particularly dramatic incident from last time around that illustrates what I mean. During the seventh-inning stretch of that last game against Tarrentum, some crazy guy in a lion costume freaked out our mascot. To a certain extent, this might be an "only in Zwangzug" story; the other top teams I can think of off the top of my head don't have so underwhelming mascots. But if you'd just read the paper the next day, by which time everybody knew oh, that guy was really from Tarrentum, but had been living in Zwangzug, you'd have missed out on half the "fun." The speculation, that is, of what could possibly be going on. Was it just a Tarrentian showing off? A Zwangzugian fed up with our team? A neutral (or embarrassed Zebra fan) just hoping for an upset? Part of some elaborate fan entertainment thing? What happens when another announcer cracks under the pressure?

Maybe it's only in Zwangzug that we'd think through so many possibilities. Maybe fans of other good teams would assume it had to be a foreigner acting out, because their fans would never sink so low. I'll admit I was confused, but mostly desperate to find out what was really going on. But whatever the case, it brought even more excitement to what turned out to be a great game.

Not that, in the end, we needed more excitement for that finish. Because as much as I love drama, tight battles, and even upsets from time to time, the times I wanted to pull what was left of my hair out at our bullpen woes reminded me that, deep down, I'm a Zebras fan, not some neutral aesthete. When we lose game after game like that, I get annoyed! One defeat in a while might be necessary to shake things up and prevent us from getting complacent, but it takes a really horrendous streak to remind me how annoying they can be. Lesson learned.

If you'd told me going in that I'd be annoyed at how many upsets there were--no, if you told me going in that after the championship series I'd be half-amazed at how somebody battled out of a 3-0 hole and half-furious that it was the bleeping Rockets again--I would have laughed in your face. And yet here we are. Yes, WBC17 sent a message all right--that baseball's crazy chances are always going to have the last laugh. It's taken too long for the message to sink in, but I can say now that I wouldn't have it any other way.

He sighs.

The fan in the lion costume. The confusion. The curiosity. The upsets.

It could be a coincidence.

What's left of the writer's hair.

His own hair is not in too great a shape.

He pecks out a comment, slowly.

Cool piece. I know I was confused when it happened. Had my guess about what was going on. Turned out I was wrong. But hey, maybe I need messages to sink in, too.

E-mail me if you want to discuss it any further, my last name @ transf.zz.

Base Mouflons Team Summary

The catcher position will see some turnover in response to the recent retirement of longtime national team backstop Laxmoni Dapezilk, a defensive rock and a former candidate for team captain. Soomifa Palemith, the powerful 26-year-old, will take over the starting spot as well as cleanup in the lineup. Expect him to emerge as a home run leader for the team – something manager Eltanu Ganaron has been craving ever since he accepted his current position. The new backup will be Yuvovs Danosol, who didn’t play particularly noticeably in the Newmanistanian Keisler Cup. Ganaron is certainly praying for Palemith’s good health for the entire duration of the WBC.

First base is traditionally a power-hitting position, but that’s not the case for Makefopapa Sheenays. At 31 years old, he doesn’t have Martin LaPlante’s strength – but he has impressive gap power, and he can get on base at a very high rate. His OBP was upwards of .500 at the Saugeais Baseball Tournament. Sheenays will be just what the offense needs: a consistently productive 3 hitter. The WBC will also feature the professional debut of Telifut Tanentuha. The 21-year-old first baseman led the national U-21 team in home runs at the Keisler Cup. Once he breaks into the lineup – and he’s got a lot of time to do so – he will be a top cleanup batsman for many years to come. For now, though, Ganaron has multiple great options at this position.

Deegaling Cafutenu could hit in any spot in the lineup and still produce a .320 BAA with 20 solid home runs over a full season. But in this lineup, Ganaron has determined he’s best in the 6-hole. His lefty swing produces a lot of bat speed that gets him the power necessary to whack pitches over the fence. Hitting coaches all the way up the line have said he has an incredible batting eye. Cafutenu has been prone to injuries in the past, but early reports say he’s healthy and good to go for the WBC. Versatile backup Panrenita Wulotatir is mostly likely to get playing time at second base, but don’t expect him to play extended innings unless Cafutenu gets injured. Wulotatir has great range (though surprisingly little speed) coupled with a pretty good arm that makes him a late-innings option at three infield positions.

Defensive-minded is a good attribute for any position player, but at third base Ganaron deems it requisite. That’s why the starting third baseman will be Hurknan Mazotehloo, the best defensive corner fielder in the country. He’ll bat in the eighth spot; Mazotehloo has no power whatsoever, and he doesn’t reach base with consistency. Still, he’s a major advantage in the field. Behind him are two utility players: Wulotatir, and Feneral Amivlait. Amivlait is a pinch-hitting option for Ganaron who is likely to see some playing time at third base to relieve Mazotehloo. He is also available to play center field if the starter there gets injured.

Speedy Karu Nigano will be the starting shortstop. The leadoff hitter is a threat to leg out extra bases on any ball hit to the outfield; what makes him an all-star-caliber player is his gap power. Ganaron says Nigano is a contender to lead the WBC in triples; admittedly, making predictions for this young, untested team isn’t the smartest of ideas. Nigano is not very strong in the field, but his offensive production will more than make up for it. Amivlait is another option here – shortstop is his natural position – but Ganaron isn’t keen on removing Nigano from any game unless absolutely necessary.

You can’t have the best players in the world at every position; Meshusas Bat Cropvliet is one of those filler players where the team can’t find anyone better to play left field. He’s not a particularly impressive hitter, though he’ll whack some doubles and add the occasional home run. His defense is nothing to rave over. But he’s better than some alternatives for the seventh spot in the lineup. Depending on how well Ellonat Slamipiv, a utility outfielder, is hitting during the tournament, Bat Cropvliet may see reduced time in sharing a lineup spot.

Center field boasts a really prodigious young man in Haseengiho Ropell. Ropell will be batting second in the lineup, and with good reason: he often goes on extra-base-hit streaks, thanks to his high gap and fence power. Plus, he is a team leader in OBP – an important quality for a 2-hitter. As a lefty, he is most dominant against right-handed pitchers; he’ll find that to be a critical advantage throughout the tournament. Expect him to put up strong numbers in the WBC. If absolutely necessary, Amivlait is available to play center field.

Have you heard of Userpleft Focheza? He’s so young that not many people have. But get used to the sound of his name, because he is going to be at the forefront of Civil Citizenry baseball for many years to come. At just 23 years old, he is already a powerful hitter – predicted to hit 40+ home runs a season. Scouts say he’s capable of hitting over .300, though that isn’t likely to happen in Cassadaigua if he chooses to swing for the fences. A late addition to the national team before the Saugeais Tournament, he was (more than once) a team hero and a catalyst that catapulted the team to a huge international championship. Frankly, the national team is stacked in right field, with Nemamany Ohess joining the team for the first time. The 20-year-old was a run machine in Newmanistan for the U-21 team in the Keisler Cup, and now he figures to translate his powerful batting stroke into run production for the big guys. Ganaron hasn’t publicly mentioned it yet, but rumors are flying around that Ohess may move to left field in future years – or maybe even during this WBC, depending on Bat Cropvliet’s success.

Ganaron made an unexpected decision by slotting Darg Divace as the rotation ace over Liltatin Olanahaj. Divace is a junkballing lefty, known throughout the country for his forkball, knucklecurve, and slurve, as well as a devastating slow slider. Olanahaj is considered the hardest-throwing pitcher in the whole country, with an average fastball approaching the 100mph mark (many pitches surpass it). Olanahaj plays the part of a staff ace, while Divace is more low-key and behind-the-curtains. Still, Ganaron likes what he sees in the aging lefty, so he will get the nod on Opening Day in Cassadaigua. Slotted behind that strong opening pair is Kestunib Xikoyina, another lefty, who has a sick 12-6 curveball as well as a consistent 96mph fastball. His curve, according to scouts, starts at the letters and drops to the batters’ knees – the full height of the batter’s box. Ganaron expects him to stifle opposing hitters. Zepponos Nimulap is the 4 starter; he’s a short (5’11”) righty who has built a career out of a nine-pitch arsenal. His 4-seamer usually hovers in the low-90s, while his two-seamer can hit 95. He can also mix in a curveball, slider, slurve, changeup, knucklecurve, and some sort of knuckleslider that breaks inwards on right-hand hitters at the last second before the ball crosses the plate. Rounding out the rotation is a national team rookie, Pujesaloni Bat Warvliet, who took the top spot in the Keisler Cup U-21 rotation. His best fastball can hit 98mph, but seeing as he’s only 21 years old there’s still time for him to fill out his lanky frame and add a touch more speed. His slider is sick, but if he can perfect his curveball he will be a staff ace in a few years.

The Civil Citizenry bullpen is stacked with arms that can go for a good inning without any trouble. Tufanor Calalay was called up from the U-21 team to act as a lefty specialist, and the 19-year-old is good enough to be a closer in the future as he steadily improves. Make sure to keep an eye on him – he’s got a powerful mix of speed and precision, especially with his nasty slider, which will make him devastating to opposing batters. Copikint Edananod and Teffanijer Omesusez are two sub-30-year-old relievers that will hold down the fort in the sixth and seventh innings. The middle reliever most likely to inherit the closer spot in the next several years is Bikitaguly Selesik. He doesn’t throw particularly hard, but he’s got a wide array of sinking, breaking, and curving pitches that cross the eyes of batters faster than you can say his first name. Ganaron has tapped Odaki Lepasar, another lefty, to handle the eighth inning, and ol’ Skip couldn’t have chosen anyone more reliable. Lepasar won’t be giving up many runs this WBC, that’s for sure. The closer will be Fizzal Maviching. At 38 years old, pundits don’t expect him to be around much longer, which is why they are raving over the relief corps behind him as pitchers try to establish themselves as being in line for the closer position. Still, Maviching is good for as many saves as the team needs him for, and Ganaron would love to squeeze as many solid years out of him as possible.

It took a few World Baseball Classics, but the calm demeanour of manager Khalil Dennis finally began to rub off on his players.

Gone was the impetuousness that saw third baseman Kate Schmidt go off when reacting to her exclusion from the first All-World team named by The Rocket Report. She didn't react to the snub excluding any Sarzonians from the team this time.

"All-star teams are an honour," she said, "but the honour we're most interested in is the one we haven't had yet," making it clear it was the World Baseball Classic trophy she was referring to.

For a team that finished the group stage a dismal 4-6 last time out, those are some lofty dreams. Shortstop Chris Spontanelli said the team considered World Baseball Classic 17 an "aberration."

"We failed to qualify for postseason once in eight or nine tries," he said. "If we failed twice or three times in a row, we'd have cause for concern. Right now, we're just trying to get established again as a team that's a legitimate threat to take home the title."

To do so, Sarzonia will have to pitch better, field better and hit better. The coaching staff and players are the same, but the mentality is much different.

"There's a quiet confidence in this team now," Dennis said. "We know what we have to do to get better as a team and we know what we have to do to win baseball games. We're just going to get out there and do our jobs."

That may involve adopting more of a small ball approach with the team than the usual custom. It may also involve more use of versatile relief pitcher Calen George. It may involve pinch running for first baseman Skip Hale or pinch hitting for Schmidt. Dennis would not leave anything off the table.

Except the return of former starting pitcher John Morgan.

"He's off the team," Dennis said. "There's no turning back now."

Sinclair a bit peeved over Tarrentum website comments.

Jayde Sinclair, supsrisingly chosen by the Newmanistani Rocket Report as the best current 2nd baseman in the world, isn't mad over the newly found attention being on the "All-World Team". She's a bit peeved that apparently the Tarrentum-based KrozileBaseballUnderground.tar site has her listed as a man.

"It's a bit rediculous that anyone doesn't recognize a woman that doesn't look like a cheerleader, like the girls from Cassadaigua or Newmanistan. Just because I don't have 38D's bouncing around out there, just because I have a buzzcut, just because I have Turner Syndrome; doesn't mean I'm not female. All I ask is that Judge-n-Jurri apologize to me privately and we can put this behind us.

In other Qazoxian WBC News, Qazox will start Michael Hunter against Churchma, as Jerri Werth strained her left knee during practice earlier today. Manager Linda Werth expects Jerri to make her WBC18 debut at home against Momojemima.

Napoliroma, Tarrentum - Here on Cosairi Island we have seen many great Opening Day's, but none so great as the Opening of the 18th World Baseball Classic! Liona Marrada put on a great performance and totally dominated the Sakurakoku National team. There is ample reasoning for Ms. Marrada being placed on the recently released "All-World Team" as one of the starting pitchers and her 7 inning, 2 hit, 9 K performance today speaks to that. While the IBL season for Marrada ended a month ago, she has had no drop-off from that season to this game. Apart from her pitching performance, Marrada was 1-3 with 1 RBI and helped keep the 4th inning rally going.

The Falcons offense proved why the team is ranked 2nd in the World Rankings with a 16 hit performance against the best that Sakurakoku had to offer. The majority of the runs came in the 3-5 innings as home runs from Dessa Vallena-Favella and Brenaccio Macca combined with consistent hitting by the rest of the lineup contributed 7 runs in three innings. The Falcons had a .436 team batting average in the game, a stat that would hopefully remain the same throughout this group stage.

The stats put up by Macca lend credence to the TSC's decision not to include Ferdini Zappataro on this year's roster. Though only Vallena-Favella had a stolen base, Macca's speed helped set up the first run of the game and helped spur on the start of the mid-game offensive breakout with his 3rd inning triple. Another standout was Armando Tovar in CF. Though no great defense was needed against the flowers of Sakurakoku, Tovar's 3-5 performance helped put runners on the bases and runs coming across the plate.

The Falcons now look to the rest of the group and could only face any real opposition from Sarzonia. While we have tried to make predictions in the past all we could hope for is advancement to the playoff round. With only 8 games to be played in the group stage, any misstep could spell doom for the team. Sarzonian sports articles have already pointed out that their desire is to win the trophy this year - looks like the upstarts will have to show the big boys how it's done once again.

The Fortnam Times
International Success for Baseball team!

The first outing of Colmark's national baseball team was deemed a success by all involved, as a boisterous sell out crowd at Farringdon Park cheered Colmark on as a three run ninth inning gave Colmark an unlikely victory.
With both sides new to the cut and thrust of international baseball, there was little to seperate the teams at the start, and pitcher Tom Stewart had a nightmare start, giving up six runs in the second innings. Colmark struck back immediately, as Frederick Hamishson and Adam Evans got round the bases before Daniel Charles hit Colmark's first ever home run with captain Ashmore on Base to bring the score back to a competitive 6-4 early in the contest.
Following the drama of the second innings, the game became tighter and tenser, with the sides effectively matching each other but Colmark unable to make up the ground on the early Sessho lead. When William Nixon struck out with two on base in the eigth, it seemed that it was Sessho's day, but hefty hit from Oliver Nash out of the ball park gave Colmark some momentum in the ninth. Pitcher Tom Stewart scrambled round on a stolen base to level the scores, but Hamishson was caught off the next pitch on the outfield wall. And so it came down to Adam Evans. Bottom of the ninth, with two out, Harris at third base. He swung and missed at the first, two balls passed by before he swung and missed again. The tension inside the creaking old ball park was palpable. The pitch came, a slider down and away, but Evans squeezed it past the infield and Harris got home, prompting wild scenes of jubilation across Farrindon Park.
Colmark are up and running, but the team are under no illusions about the size of the task facing them. Sessho were the other unranked team involved in this group, and they were always goings to struggle at Farringdon Park. A bye gives Colmark's players a chance to nurse their celebratory hangovers, before the team head off for a winnable tie away to Meguroko, who were whipped by Cassadaigua 7-2. In the words of Coach Harrison Thomas "We've started our ascent of the mountain, but we've only just scaled the foothills"

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Cabric 100 103 040 - 9
Allamunnic States 210 210 000 - 6

It's a box score that will likely be held in the Emperor's vaults, along with the Gold Medal won at the recently completed Winter Olympics. In Cabric's first true international baseball game, they stunned Allamunnic State 9-6 after a 3-run HR in the 8th by Tara Finn gave Cabric the lead at 8-6. While Allamunnic States' starter pitched well through 7+ innings (5 runs, 10 hits, 8 K's, 1 BB); the starter had thrown 128 pitches to get there. Cabric's Harry Lincoln didn't do as well, lasting only 4 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits and only striking out 4.

Cabric get the first run of the game, thanks to a 2-out double by Dan Jenks, that scored Wayne Veldt. AMS took the lead on a pair of HR's by their 3 and 4 hitters, and made it 3-1 thatnk to a bloop single by their #8 hitter. Cabric scraped a run back in the 4th ona passed ball, which allowed Michelle Sun to score, cutting it to 3-2. But back-toback doubles in the 5th and another HR by the #4 hitter made it 6-2 after 5.

In the 6th, Cabric finally strung together a few hits, getting 3 straight doubles (Sun, Jenks, Brian Jenkins) and cutting the lead to 6-5. In the 8th, pinch-hitter James Hanley; a naturalized Citizen who pass his citizenship test just days before the roster deadline; doubled to center, chasing the Allamunnic States starter. A single by Joan Paquin preceeded Finn's HR, and Carmine Boracci's double scored Veldt to make it 9-6.

In the 9th, after strong performances by both Victoria Nance and Jessica LaCross; Angie Cabric stepped to the mound looking to make Cabrician history. After walking the lead-off batter, Angie knuckled down, and got the 4-6-3 DP on the next pitch. A long lazy fly to Rick Sanders in right ended the game. The Security detailed to protect Angie Cabic was a bit confused as what to do when the Cabrician dugout emptied and swarmed Angie Cabric after the final out; but eventually prevented any mishaps.

Now Cabric heads home to face group favorites Zwangzug. Can Cabric pull off another upset?

CABRIC'S 4 BASES (The 4 key moments in the game)
1st base: The 4-6-3 DP in the 9th to relive some of the pressure Angie Cabric was facing. A hit there, and most likely a big inning happens.
2nd base: The 1-2-3 6th inning by Victoria Nance. Kept Allamunnic States from responding to Cabric's 3 runs in the top of the inning and regaining any momentum.
3rd base: The RBI double by Jenksin the 1st. Showed Allamunnic States that Cabric was not just going to roll over and let them win this game.
Home Plate: Finn's HR in the 8th. The bullpen had done well and Cabric just needed to get ahead. While not a moon-shot (the HR was an estimated 342 ft down the line in right); the momentum switched to Cabric for good.

W: Jessica LaCross (1-0)
L: Allamunnic States SP#1 (0-1)
Sv: Angie Cabric (1)
Errors: None
HR- Cabric: Finn
Allamunnic States: #3 Hitter, #4 hitter (2)

ROCKETS PICK UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF

Lycrabon- Oh, Lycrabon. The site of the great and historic comeback that saw Newmanistan win their fourth World Baseball Classic in a most amazing fashion. For the ladies in sky blue, the schedule for this Classic had them open in the same nation as that glorious victory, and for the fans of the home nation, the Rockets team they saw did not miss a beat. The Rockets won the game 6-1, and start the title defense off right. But for the team, coming back here had to bring back great memories. “When we saw it on the schedule, we thought about it immediately,” said outfielder Courtney Weinman, “It was a truly special championship for all of us. One that we will treasure forever, and this is where it happened. It kinda rocks.”

Things are a lot more peaceful this time around, literally, as you will recall that the last Classic took place while the Empire took on the annexation of the former Secristan. This year, there is no conflict, and the game was shown live, for free of course, across the contested land of two years ago. In recognition of that, many Rockets players chose to give their allotted tickets for the game to the members of the armed forces, and they weren’t about to let the fans down once the game behind. These were facts that were certainly not lost on starting pitcher Courtney Ratigan, who told reporters before the game, “I’m aware that there will be many people in attendance that were not able to watch the Rockets play in the manner they would have chosen too, in peace. I like that we come back here, to Lycrabon, and to start anew where we finished so strong in 2100. Two years have gone by, and a lot has happened since then but we’re all still the same Empire, and the same baseball team that represents it.” Ratigan delivered for the team, toss a complete game, allowing just three hits and a lone sixth inning run, a tally that came with the game already well in hand. She did not walk a batter, and struck out nine. Lycrabon countered with Tom Benson, and while the ace of the Blue Jays rotation did what he could, he had to feel he was in a tough situation. Newmanistan put two on the board in the top of the first as new leadoff batter Caitlin Leffler tripled into the left field corner to start the game off, a hit that was followed by a double from Kaylee Picard. Picard stole third, and scored on a Courtney Weinman single. Just like that, the Rockets were on the board, and they managed another in the inning as Kristen Wheeler singled in Weinman. Another RBI from Picard, this an RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0, and a solo HR from Julie Sexton in the fifth extended the lead to four. Newmanistan put the game away in the 8th on a two-run double from Tara Rulison.

All in all, it’s a successful return to the diamond for the Rockets, and it was great to be able to do it here, in Lycrabon. Because the Blue Jays are likely also the biggest contender in this group to us, it’s a good way to begin in the standings as well. The Rockets will open at home tomorrow, against Zirakul, and Jessica Brasfield will get the start.

The Cosumar National Baseball Team
World Baseball Classic 18

Basic Information

Team name: Cosumar Dragons
Hometown: Ramusok, Cosumar
Team colors: Dark blue and silver
About the team: World Baseball Classic 18 will be the Dragons' third WBC, after a poor debut in WBC 16 and only slightly better sophomore effort in WBC 17. The staff and team, which you can read more about later on this post, are very optimistic about the team's chances. The squad is very talented but their youth and inexperince may end up hurting them.

Stadiums

Primary Stadium: Orangila Capital Field
Capacity: 55,000
Image

Named after Cosumar's most popular soda "Orangila Flavored Sodas", Orangila Capital Field is an enormous indoor baseball complex. In nice whether, the dome's roof will be open, welcoming that traditional sunny-day baseball game feel. However, if it were to rain the roof can be closed as seen in the picture above. Orangila Capital Field was completed 2 years ago and has a capacity of around 55,000. It has been selected to serve as the Cosumar Dragons' primary field for the World Baseball Classic 16.

Secondary Stadium: Royals Park
Capacity: 41,000

Image

Royals Park is a beautiful field that serves as the home field for the Cosumarite domestic baseball league (PBL) team the Ramusok Royals. Although not as new or fancy as Orangila Field, Royals Park is legendary here in Cosumar. Royals Park is known for its beautiful green grass and very cheap food. The Park is about 30 years old so it has decades worth of tradition and amazing moments of Cosumar baseball. This and its large capacity of 41,000 are a few of the reasons why Royals Park has been selected to be Cosumar's secondary stadium for the World Baseball Classic 16. It will serve as an alternate to Orangila Field in case of emergency and every fourth home game will be played here.

Uniform

Image

This year's Cosumar Dragons baseball uniform consists of a dark blue shirt with gray sleeves and gray pants. The hat is dark blue with a gray C in the center of it and the socks are gray with a blue stripe. The number will go in the top right corner of the front of the shirt and in the center on the back. The player's last name will be arched around the number on the back.

Coaching Staff

Manager: Don Clintson

Mr. Clintson is the manager of the Cosumar domestic team, the Centus Bruins. The Centus Bruins won the the PBL 29 under the direction of Mr. Clintson. Don is 60 years old and loves the game. His players are well disciplined and he is very calm but is not afraid to kick up some dirt if the umpire makes a bad call.

Assistant Manager: Toby Machart

Toby is much younger than Don Clintson. Clinton is only 32 and was a Cosumar domestic baseball legend until a knee injury ended his legacy at age 27. Immediately after recovering he decided to go in to coaching since he couldn't play anymore. At 28, he became the manager of the PBL expansion team, the Olask Bulldogs. He has been at Olask for 3 years and the team has had some success. He was selected to assist Clintson with the WBC 18.

First Base Coach: Rodney Bellums

Bellums was a baseball superstar in college. He was the #1 draft pick into the PBL many years ago. After a few seasons it was clear he was a huge bust, not cut out for the big leagues. After being downgraded to the SBL (minor leagues) and disappointing even at that level, Bellums decided he was done with baseball. He tried an assortment of projects including starting businesses but none were successful. After many years he decided to go back to the game he loved: baseball-but this time as a coach. He is now 42 and is returning to baseball by being the Cosumar Dragons' first base coach for WBC 18.

Third Base Coach: Louis Capenhover

Capenhover is much different than his fellow coaches. He was never really much of a baseball player. He just loved to watch his hometown team-the Ramusok Royals. His enthusiasm for the Royals earned him the spot of bat boy at age 13. He stuck with the job for 5 or 6 years and was mentored in the rules of the game by Don Clintson. When the opening for base running coach came up a few years back-Capenhover was the best for the job. After awhile he continued to move up in the organization. Last year was his first season as Royals third base coach. With Clintson being selected to be the manager, who better to be the third base coach than his protigee Capenhover?

Western Cuba Comes out on Top, in Close Game

Yuran walked into the room, and pressed the power button. He had just received news of Western Cuba's victory over Clampo. It was a close game with the Red's winning at the end by a score of 6-4. He wanted to sound proud when he announced this. As it was the people's only bright part of the day. Hearing that there comrades had won another game in the National Sport of Western Cuba against the International World. Yuran soon began to speak.

" Good evening Western Cuba, I have brought good news to this radio station. The Western Cuban Reds have beat Clampo in the WBC Qualifying by a score of 6-4. It was a close game however though we came out on top and that's all that matters. "

Yuran paused for a second and spoke again.

" The starting pitcher for the game today was Evan Jackson, a four time player of the WBC. It was a so-so game for the old guy today pitching 6 inning's and allowing 3 runs. Totaling an E.R.A of 4.50. Not great but not that terrible. Relieving Jackson was Tod Verlander who allowed one run in two innings. The 7th and the 8th. Coming in to close was Rodger Sekera, who was somehow named on the All-World Team by Newmanistan reporters. Many have criticized the pick, including Baseball Experts in Tarrentum and Qaxoz. "

" However Sekera showed everyone who was boss today, striking out the first batter, and the final batter to win the game. Totaling there was 10 strike outs in the game. 6 from Jackson, 2 from Verlander, and 2 from Sekera. The best hitter of the game was Philip Castro. Batting 3-4, with one home run, and two doubles. However his third at bat was a strike out. "

Yuran sighed he had just received news that the radio waves would be done for a few days.

" Now the bad news folks. Western Cuban Radio Network will be done for a few days. Hopefully this weekend we will be able to re-establish connection. For now just keep your fingers crossed folks. Now good day and this is your man Jason Yuran reporting on WCRN and good night. "

Yuran pressed the power button and exited the room. Hopefully he wouldn't have to announce a loss in the upcoming days.
Now known as the Technological State of Adros, the successor state of Western Cuba

Qazox Cruises by Churchma

The decision to add a few KC4 players to the WBC squad was met with some trepidation at first; but after tonight's performance by Ashante Omante, maybe we jumped the gun a bit. Omante went 3-5 with 2 doubles and a stolen base in her WBC debut and made a diving catch in foul territory that stifled a potential Churchma comeback attempt in the 6th.

7 1/3 strong innings from Michael Hunter, who was moved up to this start due to Jerri Werth's knee injury; showed his pin-point control has finally come around, getting 4 called strikes on the way to 8 strikeouts on the night. Greg Chambers pitched the final 1 2/3rds giving up a lone hit to his first batter.

Up next for Qazox will be Momojemima. Jerri Werth is scheduled to start that game, but will be a game-time decision. If she cannot go, then expect Sean Carey to take the mound.

New year, same result

ST. CATHERINE - The game started well enough. President Hodge threw out the first pitch, and in honor of the armed forces from Newmanistan in atendance - courtesy of most of the ladies in sky blue - the 12-year old young lady that sang the Lycrabon national anthem, also performed the Newmanistani anthem. It may not have been perfect, but it was an admirable attempt. Unfortunately for the Jays, then the game started.

Courtney Ratigan, as per her usual, dominated - a nine strikeout complete game. Newmanistan scored all the runs they would need with two in the first.
Leadoff batter Caitlin Leffler tripled into the left field corner to start the game off, a hit that was followed by a double from Kaylee Picard. Picard stole third, and scored on a Courtney Weinman single. Lycrabon created more controversy as Mitchell Johnson was ejected in the ninth after hitting Miss Ratigan in the hip. The Carastogan umpire wasted no time in giving him the hook to catcalls from the Rockets bench.

The Rockets (1-0) will head home to face Zirakul, and Lycrabon (0-1) will travelto Zirakul after an off day.

Saugeais Sports Briefs
Rangers back in WBC, win first match 7-2

Saugeais' national baseball team comes back to the WBC with a bone to pick with a certain Tarrentum team. The same team that knocked the Rangers out of the playoffs last Classic. Unfortunately, this time around we do not have the pleasure to prevent them from moving on in the group stage, so we must make due with what we have. The Rangers have been drawn into a group consisting of Zwangzug, newcomer Cabric, Teinohikira, and the Allamunnic States. With only Zwangzug looking to be the challenge of the group, Saugeais has a lot to prepare for when these two teams meet. That being said, let's get back to the task at hand, the first match for Saugeais in this, the 18th World Baseball Classic.

For the first go around this Classic, the Rangers faced off against Teinohikira. Manager Greg Hanson chose to have the veteran Jim Bochy start the first game, after seeing his track record in international game. Pitching in 21 2/3 innings, with a 2.90 ERA and 16 strikeouts, Bochy had the stuff to get the job done when it counts, but was it a wise choice? Last Classic's #1 Claude Gagné went 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA, but was unavailable against a Tarrentum team that dominated the Rangers. "It's was heart-breaking then. Now, I don't think about it. I just go out and do it." When asked about being placed third in the rotation this Classic, "I think it'll give me an opportunity to surprise hitters. They think a #3 guy isn't going to overpower you; they will think again going up against me."

But it wasn't all fanfare just for Jim Bochy. Almost the entire roster got their share of attention during the game, and Saugeais managed to get at least a run in the first five innings. It all started early, when Takashi Honda beat out a bunt single with one out to get the Ranger bats started. Next Jacques Benoit lined a single into left, sending Honda to second. Then, big Tuffy Jackson came to the plate and with a 2-1 count, smashed a double off the right-center wall, scoring Honda. In the second inning, Takashi Honda came up big again, with a two run home run that just squeaked over the left field wall, scoring Jean-Paul Romero as well. The third inning saw the Teinohikiran pitcher in trouble, loading the bases with 2 outs. Then walked Derek Evans and Honda consecutively to bring in Dick Robinson, and Christophe Lind to score. 7 runs in the first five innings will give any team to celebrate, but we also needed the arm of Bochy to do the job.

For the most part, Jim Bochy was dominant, never giving up more than a double all game. He stuck out four of the first 8 batters he faced, until he got to Paul Gilchrist. The big lefty managed to score Florence Strausbaugh, who walked and stole second earlier in the inning, with a strong double to center field. But Bochy settled down after that blow, and managed to get the last batter to pop out. It was not until the 8th inning that Bochy would give up another run, this time at the bat of third baseman Cally Hyche, who drove home the speedy Anthony Parker from first with another shot to the deepest part of Stade de Saugeais. After that, Bochy left the game having pitched 7 1/3 innings, fanned 9 batters and walked 4. Shaun Fournier relieved him to finish out the 8th inning, and a new face to the international stage Steven Richardson came in 9th the finish out the game, finishing with a strikeout.

It was all fun and games after the event, but manager Hanson said to the press, "We need to have our batting finish strong. I don't care if we were up 6 runs. If the well dries up in the 5th-6th inning and you are in a tied or one-run ballgame, chances are you aren't going to win. I will let my team know that so, hopefully, they will rectify their mistakes and come out with a better feel at batting late in a game."

The Rangers have a bye next matchday, but will face the Allamunnic States at their home field next time.

The tone coming into this World Baseball Classic was hardly unfamiliar. With a dark, ominous cloud hanging over the teams head. This time it was because for the first time it what seems like an eternity. There are too many words to describe what happened last time. Disappointment. Debacle. Clusterfuck. The Nordics appeared to have finally hit rock bottom last time around, and we would be remiss to blame the introduction of many young players into the lineup as proven veterans like Johnny Stryker and Alexandria Dassow wilted just as much. A youthful pitching staff backed by an interesting mixture of veterans and rookies was simply unable to produce results. Still, on the offseason manager Paul Rudolf kept with his view of the past being just that. The past. He encouraged his players to move on.

"There's nothing we can do about what's happened the last two times. We can't go back to 16 and win one more game in the final. We can't go back to last time and do better than .500. We have to just focus on what's in front of us." And the Nordics won a slug fest today for their first game of the new classic. Alexandria Dassow threw a mediocre game marred by a tight strike zone and two errors by Cassandra Tilgner at shortstop and a linedrive shot to her face in the 6th inning. The ball, hit by the opposing first baseman, struck Dassow in the forehead and rolled into center. Fortunately Dassow never lost consciousness and sat up immediately after the event. Trainers spent several minutes with Dassow on the field, and she eventually walked off under her own power. X-rays turned up negative and Dassow reported no lasting effects of the incident, but she may miss her next start to be on the safe side.

As for the game it self? The young bullpen gave up some runs, but an offensive explosion lead by the usual suspects won the day!
