As well, it's a work I make out of complete curiosity. Some of the responses I got back from the first have been surprising in how people picked and chose; our own tech bases, I think, can blind us to other ways of doing things, and seeing everyone's fundamentals laid out plainly might aid in understanding across the board.

Dacre Ambrogino Wieland is President of the Arizona Novanian Federation of Libraries and Archives, with a Ph.D. of Information Science. His other significant works include his Sacred History: Rise of the People for the Temporal Crusade; Monotheism in the Age of Atheism; Double Meanings: The Threat and Promise of Posthumanism; and Coping With Temporal Relativity in Information Science.


Introduction
In ancient times, men strove to pierce the darkness clouding the future with speculative lights, ones which imagined and extrapolated the progress of technology from the present to remote times. As the clockwork of the universe has run, however, this speculation has often fallen by the wayside, casualties to reality. The Terran Jules Verne's work, From the Earth to the Moon, is one of the most famous examples of such, speculating the construction of a giant gun from which space travelers would be shot at high speeds to the surface of the moon. The advent of true space travel soon shew better; liquid-fuel combustion rockets, not bullets, would be the means with which mankind came to Luna.

To those authors of speculative fiction, it became the fashion to focus less on the means of technology than upon its ends; to linger less in describing the details of its workings than to dream of the problems it would solve. Disease would be cured, the walls shrouding the universe from our sight and step would be thrown down, life would be made to go on indefinitely; more darkly, new and terrible weapons would be created to bring entire nations to heel, new methods of control would be devised, and unstoppable plagues would ravage life. Utopias and dystopias revolving around technology and science were painted on the canvases of books and film.

What was considered the ultimate apotheosis of this line of thinking was the idea of the post-scarcity society; that technology would ultimately render the need for resources obsolete, and liberate thinking species from capital, and that conflict might cease because of universal prosperity, precipitating an event posthumanist thought refers to as the singularity.

However, as before, the procession of time has proved otherwise. Across the galaxy, advancing technology has indeed rendered scarcity extinct in certain societies. However, conflict has not ceased; as time has gone on, the exact opposite has happened, and conflict has escalated further and further with technological advancement. Not a day goes by without the declaration by some tyrant or another of the development of a galaxy-ending weapon, declarations which inevitably result in the bloody dismantling of said tyrant and the salting of the earth of his civilization. War has regressed to exchanges of barbaric atrocities which would horrify the Roman Empire; worlds glassed, stars destroyed, and genocide being par for the course. The incursion of the Shivans in the early hundreds A.C.E. gave us a glimpse of a species which existed solely to destroy sapient life. What had gone wrong?

Anthropologists and clerics alike have often glibly answered that the selfish origins of sapient species - in humans, the greed and deceitfulness of the chimpanzee, or in saurids the carnivorous callousness of the lizard - are the cause of our woes. Yet this alone does not satisfy.

The answer to this question is actually as simple as it is unsatisfying: technology has not liberated us from capital; technology is capital.

We fight now, at the "end of time," when science has finally caught up to the margins of the expanding universe, with weapons of unimaginable power. Why? To end the threat of others who hold the same. It is a kind of war which was in the first pioneered by the American and Russian civilizations on Terra in the early 20th century; referred by them as the "Cold War." Ostensibly resources were at the heart of their struggle, but what was emphasized by either power was the contrast of their ideologies; capitalism versus communism. The material fixation of either ideology was eschewed in favor of painting the foe in diabolical colors. We fight too to gain the tools of our foes. The peculiar species of transhumanoid that crops up from time to time referring to itself as the Borg are one such example of this; a collective whose sole purpose is to absorb the biological and technological distinctiveness of all other species, that by this absorption its weapons as well as its defenses may grow stronger.

Technology is capital. We strive to acquire more, and perfect what we have. Yet, the number of powers that has arisen is almost beyond count; no two domineering superpowers explicitly shape our universe. The rise of any one nation to supreme ascendancy is always marked by growing protest by the mass, resulting in its isolation and destruction by the merciless millions of billions without.

So what is the point of pursuing science and technology? Perhaps nothing. But there is still profit to be had in another place: analyzing our science and technology from a broad angle. "Know thyself" - to define and to understand oneself - is one of the oldest adages of philosophy, and its logical extension is that, once one knows itself, it can come to know others, and in knowing others, one comes to know their strengths - and weaknesses.

Forward to the Science of Nations, Second Edition

I am surprised and pleased by the reception of my work in the international community; it has gained some measure of acceptance, and what's more, provoked diverse discussion of its topic matter; overall I am pleased to say that it has been lauded, and the creation of Book III, the Great Analysis, continues apace, as intellectuals across the galaxy submit the profiles of their own nations.

The criticisms are, however, what I wish most to address in this Second Edition. Specifically, an issue brought up by my esteemed colleagues formerly of TRIAD Enterprises, who engaged me in debate over where the Fundamental Forces - gravity, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force, and electromagnetism - fall in terms of specialties. It was his own opinion that simple Force Manipulation would be a suitable specialization, but I had to somewhat pointedly differ. Such would imply that mastery over gravitonics was mastery over magnetism was mastery over nuclear force; yet, the technology in an artificial gravity generator is incredibly distinct from the technology in a disruptor. So then it fell to me to try and determine whether each force could be considered its own specialty. Surely, the applications of magnetism are vast, however, they are not especially distinct; containment fields for antimatter, the delivery sheath used in plasma weaponry, the central component of the MAC; it is not, in these cases, the magnetic field thats is as important as what it is either containing and or delivering, whereas in gravitonics, the primacy of production, control, and delivery of that elusive particle is central. As well, I have not seen many examples to date of an FTL civilization which has built its entire technology base on mastery of magnetism, whereas this has been observed to be the case in the case of gravitonics; witness The Mindset, for example.

Yet other forces do have distinct and diverse application, but only at particularly high levels. Being able to affect nuclear force is the basis of both disruptor weapons and force fields; but there is still relatively few applications of it that have been broached to me beyond that.

The other matter of much discussion was the Minor Strategic Triangle. While the importance of application of biological science was not contested, its place on the triangle was, as was some of the terminology I used for the other definitions. I was forced to agree with the points raised in that department, and sought out terminology to perfect the minor triangle, and make it as airtight, as it were, as the Greater.

Book I: The Great Specialties: Firstly, the technological sciences of this era can be reduced down in general to five umbrella categories. The specialties are then applied in certain areas on the the Strategic Triangles, which are dealt with in Book II.

  1. Image
    Materials Engineering: this governs all the secrets regarding the recombination of phyical substance for directed use; whether simply distilling water to drink to crafting in neutronium, the densest material known to exist.


  2. Image
    Directed Energy: this is the power to bend and manipulate energy to a purpose, ranging from the utilization of electricity to accomplish motor movement, to the workings of a superlaser array designed to destroy a planet.


  3. Image
    Self-Guided Systems: This refers to any system created with the intent to act upon its own initiative, whether a simple guided missile or an immense and complex arch-AI-lect.


  4. Image
    Gravitonics: Gravity is, as a force, one which walks the line between energy and matter, affecting both in various, sometimes unpredictable ways. Gravitonics touches everything from artificial gravity systems to black hole bombs.


  5. Image
    Alteration: The most esoteric specialization, alteration encompasses any technology which directly alters the fabric of reality itself, whether it be dimensionally, temporally, or through quantum mechanics.

A set of two triangles, that represent what the nation most values militarily, and which can be used to plot out the application of specialties.

  1. The Triangle Major: or the Great Triangle refers to those capabilities which are concrete and easily observable.
    1. On Defensive Capabilities: Armor, shielding, to protect from the elements, and the weapons of others.
    2. On Offensive Capabilities: Weaponry, designed specifically to obliterate threats.
    3. On Mobility: The means of propulsion, by which ships are made to travel, to flee or bring battle.
  2. The Triangle Minor: the Lesser Triangle bisects the Greater; its applications are more abstract and difficult to observe, but no less important.
    1. On Clandestinity: the ability to hide from the enemy, whether literally in battle or figuratively through espionage; any technology which aims to fortify this quality.
    2. On Tactics: the ability to effectively command and control, to make and relay decisions as quickly as possible, and employ countermeasures to hamper the enemy's abilities; i.e., your ability to react and outmaneuver your enemy's technology, though not necessarily stop it.
    3. On Suprabiology: the resources spent on developing attributes outside of natural evolution, whether it is simply increased longevity or psionic/Force powers.

Book III: The Great Analysis
Take all the points of the Strategic Triangles and the Specialties list, listed in order of their importance to your nation. Whether or not it's universally true in your nation is besides the point; obviously, even the most Offensive nation is going to have some kind of ship that could be more Defensively keyed; this is an overall approximation of your concentrations.

I.E. "EVEN THOUGH we bought a Death Star, which is Offense and Defense sans Mobility, my strategy typically focuses on Mobility and Defense by way of having fast, heavily armored ships for exploration"

Other ways to think about it: think of things that your nation has done. Banned AIs? Self-Guided Systems may not be as important to you. Just completed a time-travel experiment? Alteration is becoming more important to you. Discovered a new alloy that reflects lasers? Materials engineering sounds like your forte.

Even if you have something that you think is an exception to the rules here, post that, and how it is an exception. Science of Nations is a living work, at the moment. ICly, its author would also welcome further discussion of the topic as he expands upon it.

I think there is a definite advantage, though, in knowing what you're good at, in terms that people aren't going to be able to shout down. Saying that your defenses should hold out longer, because they're what your nation has devoted the most time and effort to developing, is easier than going into the specifics of how your neutronium plating should be able withstand the blast of someones chaos ray. Having a post here allows you, then, to refer to it in later RPs if and when there is a conflict.

OOC: Actually, I found the two triangles the easiest of the three, as they're pretty much established in my mind. It was the specialisations that confounded me... *grumbles* Materials engineering was always going to be number one, but the rest... bleh!

MT can take RL statistics and performance of things and use them to determine the outcome of a fight; FT doesn't have that luxury, so we need to settle on the equivalent of "Rock - Paper - Scissors" to settle things.

Offense: With the limitations of the Solarian universe where Einstein does not roll over in his grave, pretending that space warfare is like warfare between ironclads where shots are shrugged off by armor until one of them blows up doesn't work. Shooting accurately and first do work, however, even if the first shots will take days of inertial flight to reach the target they are locking on.

Mobility: Solarian spacecrafts are better compared to fencers than to knights in plate mail like the typical spaceship. Their first means of survival is by accelerating quickly enough for dodging and evading hits, rather than by shrugging them off with heavy armor. Advanced calculations will define "evasive thrust" to move a spacecraft into a vector in 3d space with the least probability of being intercepted by the trajectory of an incoming unguided weapon, and with the least estimated damage factor. Unlike what is expected from the typical battleship or coreship, the Solarian largest spacecrafts are, paradoxically, the most agile and mobile.

Defense: Active protection systems, a more fitting name for something less limited than point-defense systems, make the gross of Solarian defenses. lens missiles, dust, magnetically charged countermeasures and other elements are used to deflect energy weapons, while kinetic and chemical missiles are used to deflect kinetics and certain extreme measures used to deflect blatant godmodding. The armor of Solarian spacecrafts, composed primarily by Whipple shields, electromagnetic reactive armor and a thick self-regenerating ice sheet was originally aimed at the perils of relativistic spaceflight rather than for military purposes, although it can still mean the difference between "light damage" and "critical damage".

Suprabiology: The ancestors of mankind had a history of violence, hierarchies and social submission, whereas the average Solarian is an engineered human being whose very "human nature" in the shape of behavioral tendencies in the genetic code was built based upon anarchist principles, in the antithesis of what Huxley predicted in Brave New World. Most Solarians despise the idea of "letting natural evolution do its job", and instead are continually engineering their own future as a species, while trying to maintain a memory of their ancestors.

Tactics: In the Solarian universe, superior strategies, automation technology and logistics have always been more important than tactics in space warfare, where the impossibility of in-universe FTL travel and stealth in space, among other things, always led space warfare to be defined by the grand strategy behind it. Nevertheless, the Solarians rarely, if ever, resort to the method of threatening to destroy a planet once space superiority has been achieved, for they value too highly planets capable of sustaining human life to destroy them, due to their rarity in their universe, unlike what they call the dreg of the universe. As for planets unable to sustain Earthlike life, and thus only filled with aliens, then the fireworks happen.

Clandestinity: As mentioned, the lack of Stealth in Space for the parallel universe where Solar Communes is makes covert operations outside an atmosphere pretty much pointless. What Solarians have is "Blank Tech", which is essentially a collection of methods to create "generic" enough technology for false-flag operations to make sense beyond their own universe, as their means of extra-universal travel are anything but traceable, and safe.

Self-Guided Systems: Information Technology and all forms of science it depends upon are the most advanced fields for Solar Communes, and logically, the foundation of the war machines and strategies as well. From the very augmented neurons in their brains loaded with nanocomputers, the active protection systems and highly accurate aiming algorithms that allow for static targets or for targets with predictable orbital movement to be hit at distances exceeding five light-hours, to estimations of where exactly, at one given instant, a spacecraft or space marine should be positioned to dodge as many unguided incoming threats as possible, converted into vectored thrust, the strength of Solarians in such field is clear, and they have enough expertise to learn through completely alien information systems faster than most.

Materials Engineering: The Solarians have found a necessity, due to the slowness of space travel in their own universe, to explore in the most efficient and effective manners every existing resource in a single star system, and their experience in the Eternal War have taught them how to build industrial infrastructure at staggeringly fast speeds. And thus, even if they may take a long time to reach a new planet and colonize it, they will take far less time to transform a just colonized planet into an economic superpower. Equally, such knowledge shows in their ability to settle extremely hostile planets and in their relatively quickly acquired knowledge of how to develop and construct Dyson swarms. Militarily, the structural integrity necessary for super-agile coreship-equivalents stands as their greatest achievement.

Directed Energy: Few solar systems could be considered the homes of Type II civilizations by themselves. Gliese 581 is one of them. Solar Communes has one of the most refined fusion and solar power technologies of the universe, and through materials turned into the state known as Boson-Einstein condensate, their destructive applications of energy include extremely long-ranged Gamma Ray laser weapons of massive lens diameter, as invisible as deadly at even 0.x fractions of light seconds against moving targets and at light minutes against predictable targets.

Alteration: Although James Randi died, his grand-grandson died and nobody ever managed to prove psychic skills while the 1 million paranormal challenge was at large, ironically, it was when most people stopped caring about it, that its essence became public. Although psychic and paranormal activities have always been in Solar Communes little more than turning forks and guessing which number a person just thought about, when traveling through their primary means of extra-universal travel, such psychic capabilities are necessary to avoid traveling completely blind through a purely psychic plane of existence where nightmares become alive. According to some obscure reports, the strange gateway to the Hell-like dimension that allows them to journey through other universes was opened through an extremely wicked satanic ritual. Alteration and "going to Hell" are synonymous for the Solarians.

Gravitonics: After extensive field testing, it was proved impossible to manipulate gravity in the Solarian universe, and the Graviton theory fell into obscurity as a fringe science, just as gravitonics became nothing but an outdated handwavium nobody ever cared about, just like the idea of the Luminiferous Aether became obsolete after real science disproved it. Any gravitic technology will stop working in the Solarian universe, and thus it is by all accounts completely unused by them.

A few notes. Morningstar is descended from the scattered remnants of the black-ops arm of TRIAD Enterprises. At the moment, they still have a fair amount of tech and ships left behind, however they will be completely unable to replace a large majority of these assets once lost or spent. I've made the above ratings based on what Morningstar is currently able to replace, manufacture, and fully utilize themselves.

When and as Morningstar manages to aquire technologies and resources from other nations to replace what was lost, things on this profile will change.
