Cot.34 "Svane"

Official Image

The Svane, also known as the Cot.34, is a supersonic passenger transport aircraft (SST) intended for transcontinental passenger flights. Svane entered service in 1995, and is very similar in design to the more iconic Concorde, although the Svane is somewhat bigger. Powered by four Olympia 588 afterburning turbojet engines, Svane typically operates at cruise speeds of Mach 2.02, transporting passengers to their destination quickly and luxuriously. Great lengths are taken to reduce the noise of the engines, providing the passengers with a remarkably quiet passenger cabin. Noise measurements of the background cabin noise in a Svane is measured at 59 db, 4 db lower than the passenger cabin of a Boeing 737.

The Svanes passenger cabin measures 47 meters long, allowing for a maximum of 112 seats to be crammed into the passenger cabin, giving a total of 28 rows with 4 seats abreast. This is a typical two-class arrangement with business class [32 seats] in the front of the fuselage and the economy class [80 seats] in the rear of the fuselage, seperated by a curtain divider. On the other scale, Svane can be outfitted for the all-business class arrangement with 92 seats, giving a total of 23 rows with four seats in each row. By default, Svane comes with comfortable leather seats with four seats per row which can be arranged as cradle seats (two-class arrangement), or as fully flat seats (all business-class arrangement). Upon request, Svane can be delivered with herringbone seating, although this will reduce the amount of seats to 60.

Passenger amenities are provided for by the inclusion of four lavatories (two front, two rear of passenger cabin), and a small galley for the flight attendants. Additionally, in-flight entertainment is provided in business class through a personal television screen in the armrests where the passenger can chose from a variety of entertainment programs and films, as selected by the airline. Svane can also be fitted with high-speed satellite Internet wi-fi access at the request from the airline. The addition of Internet access allows business travellers to work even while flying, if they so desire/require. Additionally, there is a display showing the aircraft's speed in Mach and altitude (foot or meter, depending on the airline's preference), for the interest of the passenger.

Hkp.22 Alligator

Image

The Hkp.22 Alligator is a large helicopter gunship and attack helicopter that is produced by the Karolinistad Aircraft Corporation, Ltd, for the Royal Cottish Army and the Royal Cottish Navy. The Alligator serves as the principal attack helicopter gunship in the anti-tank and close air support roles for the Royal Cottish Armed Forces, and is particularly well liked by the Cottish special operations community due to its large weapons load and the low-capacity troop compartment, which enables the Alligator to carry up to eight troops.

Design
The design of the Alligator is dominated by the two top-mounted turboshaft engines driving a mid-mounted 17.3 m five-blade main rotor and a three-blade tail rotor. The engine configuration gave the aircraft its distinctive double air intake. Original versions have an angular greenhouse-style cockpit; Model D and later have a characteristic tandem cockpit with a "double bubble" canopy. Two mid-mounted stub wings provide weapon hardpoints, each offering three stations, in addition to providing lift. The load-out mix is mission dependent; The Alligator can be tasked with close air support, anti-tank operations, or aerial combat.

The body is heavily armored and can resist impacts from .50 caliber (12.7 mm) rounds from all angles, including the titanium rotor blades. The cockpit is an even more heavily armored titanium tub and can resist impact from 35mm cannon rounds. The cockpit and crew compartment are overpressurized to protect the crew in NBC conditions.

Considerable attention was given to making the Alligator fast. The airframe was streamlined, and fitted with retractable tricycle undercarriage landing gear to reduce drag. The wings provide considerable lift at high speed, up to a quarter of total lift. The main rotor was tilted 2.5° to the right from the fuselage to counteract dissymmetry of lift at high speed and provide a more stable firing platform. The landing gear was also tilted to the left so the rotor would still be level when the aircraft was on the ground, making the rest of the airframe tilt to the left. The tail was also asymmetrical to give a side force at speed, thus unloading the tail rotor.

Armament
The armament given to the Alligator clearly illustrates the intended main roles. No less than four artillery-type weapons are mounted on the Alligator, allowing the aircraft to lay large amounts of firepower onto the enemy and support the troops on the ground.

The principal artillery armament for use against structures, tanks and armoured vehicles, and other ground targets is the LK.30142, a single-barrel automatic chain gun which fires the 30x173MM round of GAU-8 Avenger fame. Typical ammunition loadout consists of 500 rounds, with a even mix of PGU-14 Armoured-Piercing Incendiary and PGU-13 High-Explosive Incendiary rounds. The LK.30142 is mounted in a flexibly-mounted turret underneath the gunner, and uses a 2 hp electric motor to load the 30MM ammunition at a rate of roughly 600 rounds per minute. The practical rate of fire is roughly 300 rounds per minute, with a ten-minute cooling period due to the cannon being air cooled. The gun has a positive cook-off safety for open bolt clearing, and double ram prevention. Spent casings are ejected overboard through the bottom of the gun. The LK.30142 has an effective range of 1,600 meters, and a maximum range of 4,500 meters.

Secondary artillery armament for anti-personnel use is the Layartebian-made M79A1 three-barrel automatic Gatling-type chain gun, which fires the 12.7x99MM round. The M79A1 is mounted in the nose, and is controlled by the Gunner. A total of 3,000 rounds of ammunition is carried at the ready for the M79A1 in a linkless belt.

The designers at Karolinistad didn't neglect the passengers, who were allocated two MG3 medium machine guns mounted in the side windows, allowing the passengers and/or the Crew Chief to lay down covering fire and assist the Gunner in the anti-personnel role. The MG3 is an automatic, air-cooled, belt-fed short recoil-operated machine gun chambered for the 7.62x51MM round, modified for the helicopter-mounted role with a casing catcher which directs the spent ejected casings down out from the helicopter, so that the casings aren't thrown upwards into the rotor or engine air intakes, something which could potentially be catastrophic. 3,000 rounds in a linkless belt are carried for each of the two MG3s.

Principal rocket-armament consists of six hardpoints mounted on the side wings (3 on each hardpoint), plus two wingtip hardpoints which can carry lightweight air to air missiles. All six hardpoints are rated to carry up to 500 kg each (allowing them to carry up to four anti-tank missiles or one rocket pod per hardpoint each), while the two wingtip hardpoints are rated at 80 kg each (allowing them to carry up to two air-to-air missiles each). This allows the Alligator to carry a theoretical maximum load of twenty-four anti-tank missiles and two air to air missiles. The anti-tank missiles are fed target data from the Armbrøst millimetric-wave fire-control radar, which is based on the Longbow millimetric-wave radar, mounted above the rotor assembly. This allows the Alligator to remain hidden behind an obstacle, and still detect and engage targets up to 12 kilometers away, and track 144 targets simultaneously and prioritize the top 24 threats.

A textbook "ambush" scenario would see an Alligator section move into position masked by terrain and coordinating via datalink. The lead ship would then raise its Armbrøst system to detect targets, and then drop back under cover, while the lead gunner distributes the targets via "drag and drop" to the other aircraft in the group, to avoid multiple targeting. At that point, all aircraft can salvo launch their anti-tank missiles and back out into a new position, while the missiles attack the targets. The software "remembers" the coordinates of attacked targets and flags these on the screen with an X to avoid redundant reattack and wasting of rounds.

Christian Frederik class Battle Cruiser

Offical Image

The Christian Frederik-class battle cruiser is a class of heavy, missile-carrying aircraft carrier escorts, designed to serve as Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) command and control vessels and heavy close-in AAW escorts for the aircraft carriers. Intended to be deployed in a one-to-one ratio along with the fleet's heavy aircraft carriers, the Christian Frederik-class is powered by two nuclear reactors, allowing it to attain a high top-speed with which to keep up with the aircraft carriers, and increase the ship's endurance substantially. Armament includes several 203MM naval rifles for anti-ship and heavy anti-air gunnery; a whooping 231 vertical launch cells for SAMs; and a variety of other armaments. The design philosophy of the Christian Frederik-class is simple: It is designed to sustain massive damage, including a number of missile hits, and still be able to carry out its primary mission of protecting the aircraft carrier. This feat was proven during the Second Cottish-Nerotikan War in 1988 when HMS Fridtjof Jarl suffered three direct hits from Nerotikan SUNBURN missiles to the superstructure without succumbing to the raging fires, which weren't put out for another three days.

YNOGA class Escort Aircraft Carrier

Official Image

The YNOGA-class escort aircraft carrier is a Layartebian-built, Cottish-operated escort aircraft carrier designed to be a cheap, rapidly deployable aircraft carried intended for escorting amphibious units, overseas convoys, and "showing the flag"-type operations. With the reduction in size of the Royal Cottish Navy in the last twenty years, the bulk of the YNOGA-class has been retired and either sold off to foreign navies or been handed over to the breakers. The remaining fifteen hulls in service with the Royal Cottish Navy has been refitted to be sustainable in today's modern fighting environment with new electronics and weaponry, and are held in training or Ready Reserve status. This means that while the ships aren't normally in commission, they have a small caretaker crew which maintains the vessels and keep them in good material condition. If directed to by the National Command Authority, the vessels can be brought to full readiness, crewed by Naval Reservists and mobilization-assigned officers, and fully ready for deployment within ten days. Carrying an airwing of twenty light fighters and four ASW helicopters, the YNOGA-class packs a heavy punch and offers Fleet Commanders with added flexibility and fighting punch.

SABERTOOTH Main Battle Tank

Image

The Sabertooth is the principal Main Battle Tank in service with the Armed Forces of the Realm of Cotland, and has served in this capacity since it was introduced 15 years ago. The Sabertooth has been upgraded several times, most recently with the "2-Charlie" update programme, which saw the Sabertooth units in Cottish service upgunned with the M360A1 120MM/55 caliber electrothermal-chemical (ETC) cannon, Tirion-4 active protection system, upgraded power pack, and permanently added non-explosive reactive armour, thus increasing the survivability and fighting capabilities of the Sabertooth. The 76-tonne Sabertooth is expected to remain the principal main battle tank in Cottish service for the next ten to fifteen years.

VIKING Infantry Combat Vehicle

Image

The Viking Infantry Combat Vehicle is the result of an operational requirement from the Royal Cottish Army issued in the fall of 1994, requiring a unique vehicle with high mobility, air defence and anti-tank capability, high survivability and protection. After a two-year design and trials process in which five Cottish and international defence industrialists participated, the prototype from Hägglunds, based in Häggfors, Sweden won and was issued the contract to deliver up to 150,000 units to the Cottish military. First deliveries of the newly named Viking ICV were carried out in the spring of 1999, and by 2005 the majority of the Cottish active manouver units had been refitted with the new vehicle. Several modifications and upgrades have been made on the original Viking, and the highly successful chassis has been the the basis for several variants (see list below). The Viking remains the principal infantry combat vehicle for Cottish Army Grenadier Battalions.

MÆRSK-class Container Ship

Official Image

The MÆRSK-class container ship is a sub-group built for the Royal Cottish Navy's Military Seaift Command, and is based on the Triple E family of large, fuel-efficient containerships, following on from Cottish shipping company Maersk's E-class. The ships are containerships with a capacity of 18,000 TEU, with an emphasis on lower fuel consumption.

Unlike conventional single-engined containerships, the Mærsk-class of ships have a twin-skeg design with twin diesel engines, each driving a separate propeller. Usually a single engine is more efficient, but using two propellers allows a better distribution of pressure, increasing propeller efficiency more than the disadvantage of using two engines. The engines have waste heat recovery systems, known as WHR; heat recovery is also used in 20 other Mærsk vessels including the eight E-class ships. The twin-skeg principle also means that the engines can be lower and further back, allowing more room for cargo. Maersk requires ultra-long stroke 2-stroke engines resulting in lower RPM, but this requires more propeller area for the same effect, and such a combination is only possible with two propellers due to the low water depth of the desired route.

The hull is more 'boxy' with a U-shape compared to the V-shape of the E-class; this allows more containers to be stored at lower levels, so while the Triple-E is only 3m wider and 4m longer, it can carry 2,500 more containers, an increase of 16%. The MÆRSK-class can carry 23 rows of containers compared to 22 of the E-class, maximizing the reach of current terminal cranes. The deckhouse is relatively further forward, whilst the engines are to the rear. The forward deckhouse allows containers to be stacked higher in front of the bridge (which further increases capacity) whilst still maintaining forward visibility good enough to comply with SOLAS regulation V/22.

The MÆRSK-class is expected to be used on the "Milk Route" between Cotland and the faraway colonies, and to carry supplies and containerized equipment for the various branches of the Cottish Military on future operations overseas.
