It is the middle of August, in the summer heat of the eastern Diyaristani lowlands. The city of Qashmar is notable for its choking pollution, ubiquitous smokestacks, and extensive railway hubs. A commercial district buzzes with neon signage, seemingly oblivious to the time of day - or perhaps just more visible in the huge shadows produced by towering new industrial complexes. A new plume of smoke rose from the direction of the Presidential House. The 27th of this month was fated to become a day of national infamy.

"Everyone, we have an emergency! Terrorists just bombed the Presidential Palace!"
"We're receiving word that President Amin is dead! Members of the Supreme Ijma are immediately advised to take cover in the Representatives' bunkers."

Filing down a spiral staircase, with soldiers behind and in front of them, most of the representatives are visibly shaken. Army Chief of Staff Marat Baghmetara already awaited inside the main bunker.

"Switch on the news. I need to see what's going on."

"...as the battle for Yarlaq intensifies. The Army has confirmed 231 casualties just in today's round of fighting. You can see the crowds of people streaming out of the city in expectation of a possible takeover by ISIS."

"...and we turn to our live interview with the Army Chief of Staff and interim president, General Baghmetara. General? Any words to the nation in the aftermath of President Amin's assassination?"

The news crew. The people must be reassured...

"Just this. The people of our Republic are fighting a life-or-death war for our democracy's very existence. A famous American leader once said that his country could not remain half free and half slave. Either Diyaristan is a nation of free men and women, or the slave empire of Wilayah al-Kala. I appeal to my fellow countrymen and the liberty-loving nations of the earth to aid us in our cause."

"What are your orders, Mr. President?"

"Convert Qashmar Airport into a military landing zone. We'll need all the troops we can get to survive this."

The Green Union has openly condemned the attack on the Diyaristani Presidential Palace by pro-Daesh fighters.

Prime Minister Pierre Mackenzie has also condemned the attack on a personal level, and has expressed his grief over the death of President Amin, whom Mackenzie had been on very friendly terms with.

In a press conference today the Prime Minister Stated:

'The issue of the so-called Islamic State and its aligned groups has been one The Green Union has been taking a careful role in approaching, but with this greater threat to Diyaristan, an allied member of the F/A-54 program, our government is being forced to act in a much more drastically.

As always, it is not a feasible solution to put 'boots on the ground' in the Middle East, but the Commons will soon convene to discuss the issue in full. I am confident we will find a way forward."

Two weeks later, after rigorous debate and Senate approval, the multi-year plan was announced.

With the Approval of the Diyaristani government, The Green Union will commit a force of eighty special forces trainers in order to train local pro-government forces and militias. At the same time seven UF-155 Hawks will be committed to scout and ground attack roles against Wilayah al-Kala rebels.

Outside of the purely military role The Green Union will step up its involvement in the US-led Coalition to stem the influx of arms into the Middle East, and will be stationing humanitarian aid forces in the more stable areas of Diyaristan to both provide aid to displaced populations and facilitate a fast tracked system for refugees to seek Elysium outside of Diyaristan. (The last point was hotly contested, since The Green Union is still struggling to resettle several thousand Elysium seekers, most prominently from Africa and the Middle East)

City of Novaris:
It was 4 AM and the city layed peacefull under the stars, the palace so busy at daytime was barely active.
A sharp knock on the door of the master suite ended this peace, there were only a few occassions licensing such an action. They were doubt 'Emergency Class II' for emergencies within the region and 'Emergency Class I' for attacks against Phexa.
When the king opened the door he looked concerned until he recognized the nightly intruder.
The man on nightly duty, so no complete meeting of the staff.
" Your Majesty, I'm terrible sorry for th..."
" We don't have time for politeness have we ? What is the emergency ?"
" The Civil War in Diyaristan intensified into a full scale civil war. Evacuation is allready under the way but we need your order regarding military actions."
A swell of curses errupted from the man in command, King Alexei, third of his name, King of Phexa and head of the ancient cult had his share of battles but they were long ago, since 20 years Phexa was a peacefull country and the new generation didn't know how to fight a war.
" Give me twenty minutes, full staff meeting and I fand Geneeral Gregory there is that clear ?"
" Crystal your majesty."
Still cursing under his breath the king prepared for the meeting, probably the most important one to come in the last 4 years. Of course he had expected something like this. You couldn't be a Phexan without beeing a realist and the conflict was escalating since a good amount of time.
Still he was worried, of course he would send Phexan Soldiers into this conflict, it was his duty to protect the country against foreign dangers and a victory of this Terrorists was not acceptable.
The queen looked at him with the same look of worriedness. " It happens again ?"
" Yes we are going to war again, this time not for us but for our children. This is not our war but we need to reasure the people that the fox still can bite."

Later in the morning the Orders came out.
The X and XI Mechanized Legion would be mobilized and send to Diyaristan as soon as possible.
All in all ~ 20 000 Men ground troops as well as 10 Squadrons of F-15s, 2 mechanized divisions and 3 cruiser groups would be deployed within the next 2 weeks.
The overall Command for Phexan troops was given to General Gregory Winter, a veteran of the last Phexan War that secured the current borders of the Kingdom.

PM Edwim McCarthy wiped his brow with his handkerchief. He had just left another hectic session in the House of Ministers over the ISIS rebellion in Diyaristan. No real conclusions had been drawn, it was difficult to decide what to do, and if was difficult to find out what was wanted. They concluded that they would write to General Bahmetara. He drafted a telegram and sent it using a light encryption to avoid any conflicts with rebels who where trying to tap into global communications.

Chamberlain continued as normal, indifferent to events a world away. People carried on their day to day lives, perhaps spending a moment to watch the news and ponder on the plight of the refugees fleeing the rebels in Diyaristan before returning to whatever they were doing before.

However, in the bowels of government, a movement was stirring. "for too long we've laid idle!" came the cry from the military and warhawks. "Now is the time to remind the world of our strength, our greatness!".

Maybe they were right. Maybe now was the time for Cressageland to re-enter global affairs. However action would have to be taken slowly, as not to cause the populace to think it was an act of wanton aggression. A telegram was sent in secret to Qashmar.

"But there's also good news, General. I just heard that tens of thousands of troops from the Kingdom of Phexa, including armored divisions and 10 air squadrons, are en route. Preparations for converting Qashmar International Airport into a fortified airbase are complete."

We are prepared to assist with medical and food drops, sanctuary for government officials to continue to fight the good fight if they are exiled and we have our Army, Navy and Airforce on standby."

Over rebel held territory

He flew low to the ground and looked over the recording gear and waited. The young senior airman looked over the radio gear and he had tapped into rebel channels. Soon the plane suffered from a massive jolt. Soon alarms started going off and he had been hit by a heat seeking missile on his left wing. Soon the radar acted up again and he popped flares. That worked until the comms officer said a hostile SAM opened fire on them. Soon the back of the plane bursted into fire and the front of the plane and the plane was torn in half. Everything went black.

5 hours later

He woke up and he looked around. The plane was sideways and he looked at his body. He was alright as far as he knew, he took off his seat belt and fell on his dead co-pilot and his seat. He stood up and walked out of the cockpit and saw the plane was torn in half. The comms specialist was KIA and so was the rest of his crew he was the sole survivor.

Chamberlain Airbase: 18:00

The 5 Hercules aircraft prepared for takeoff in their little publicised flight to Qashmar. Due to the presence of enemy air defence, they are to be escorted by 2 Panavia Tornado aircraft. Whilst more modern aircraft are avaliable, the Cressageland Armed Forces (CAF) are in dire need of mechanisation.

The transports are mainly filled with medical and emergency supplies. However, in one of the planes, a considerable amount of military equipment is stacked, enough to have a small, well equipped force on the ground of around 50 men. Amongst their equipment are laser targeters for airstrikes, although some training will be needed on the ground to enmesh them with the Diyaristani forces.

The General stands in front of the tall computer screens that are all over the interior of the Diyaristani Army Defense Command. Some portray war maps, others portray reports from Diyara News Service and Diyara News Service English. Right now, one of them is linked in two-way teleconference to Melbourne-Haven.

"Your Government's offer of assistance is very much appreciated, and doubtless our troubled people will be happy to see your soldiers aiding them.

What we need most is soldiers to keep order in the countryside outside Qashmar. We've had to scrape up every man and woman we could find just to keep the front line from falling to the ISIS siege, and that's left the country largely without law or order. Not only does that mean potential ISIS bases could be forming right inside eastern Diyaristan, but we've also noticed an uptick in the number of the Communist guerrillas who are inciting public protests against the declaration of martial law.

As far as recent intelligence can tell, the Communist insurgents are split into two factions: the "Popular Frontists" who support aiding us against ISIS, and the "Revolutionary Defeatists" who are trying to aid ISIS against us. We have no idea which one is stronger."

Yarlaq

The blasted buildings of Eastern Yarlaq, which used to host the neon signs of derelict businesses taken over by Diyaristan's "military capitalism" stimulus program, are now hotly contested by 6,000 besieged soldiers of the heavily-armed Diyaristani Army and 10,000 ISIS militants. The once-optimistic skyline is now dominated by collapsing smokestacks. Col. Aghtar Qashem is reviewing his war maps in the mobile command center. The air is filled with tracer rounds.

"They're attacking again."

"ALLAHU AKHBAR!", an ISIS militant yells before he detonates his vehicle on the Colonel's position.

"COLONEL! Are you okay?! We have to get you to evacuation immediately!" The injuries are severe. Twenty-four others were injured, with 12 others killed in the blast. From the crumbling buildings above, Diyaristani soldiers are shooting heavy machine guns at the ISIS hordes moving inward toward the city center.

President Wyatt Wizzard II of Arctica-Aleutia trawled through his email, looking for anything of importance. After the government had been unable to notify him of the attack on the capital the previous month they insisted he get an email address.
Wyatt saw something that grabbed his attention. A bulletin from a news site. ISIS insurgents were trying to take the city of Qashmar in Diyaristan.
"Hmm," thought Wyatt, "maybe I can be of some help."
After searching through countless webpages, he finally found the phone number for the Diyaristan government. A voice asked him why he was calling and who he was, and patched him through to the bunker after realizing he was a head of state.
"Greetings. I am president Wyatt Wizzard II of Arctica-Aleutia. Although we have no formal relations with your country, we stand with you against ISIS and are ready to offer full military assistance. Many of our forces are outdated, but we have newly developed fighters that we believe will be helpful, as well as several U-2 spyplanes that could be used to keep tabs on the enemy."

General Toyotomi Hedioshi saluted the passing columns of tanks and soldiers as they marched in military formation. a flank general tapped on his shoulders.
"sir,Diyaristani is requesting aide against ISIS rebels, apparently they killed their president, what should we do?"
Hedioshi thought for a long time before standing up and smiling broadly,punching the aide in the face and knocking him cold. he then asked for a new aide,which arrived quickly.
"ah, thank you for arriving,I want you to prepare 5,000 soldiers to leave at once."
"sir, will they need armored support?"
"you are right in that aspect, here are my orders, the 5,000 soldiers and 20 BMP-1s, along with, let's say, 15 T-62 tanks are to be airlifted into the nation, get me commander Fargo."
the aide nodded,turned around and handed him a cellphone.
"yes, this is commander fargo."
"Fargo,I want you to lead a thousand soldiers into combat."
"what nation are you getting us involved in,and will I get a pay raise?"
"the nation's called Diyaristan. consider your pay quadrupled. "
"got it bass."
with that, he ended the phone call and began to roll over back to sleep.

Typist loyd grenser yawned, it had been a long day, typing up letters and sending them off to various foreign dignitaries. the radio crackled on, Grenser answered it tiredly.
"hello,this is the Carriebeanian Office of Foreign Affairs."
"this is general Toyotami,type up a letter to pro ISIS rebels,tell them we are going to help them. and declare war on Diyaristan."
"got it, give me a few minutes."
with a groan, he was forced into the old grind of working for the government a few minutes longer.

08:00:Qashmar airport

3 of the 5 transport planes had landed over an hour ago, and were now well along the process of unpacking the supplies that would be used to help the refugees and victims of the rebellion. The two Tornados and the remaining Hercules were making a beeline for Yarlaq, where they would provide more urgent care and, in the case of transport number 5, military support to the Government.

Just as the flight crossed over into Diyaristani airspace, they recieved word that the escorts had been given permission to follow them in. This added a new dimension to their mission, as they would now provide high-altitude reconnaissance for the Government and the special forces until a shipment of air to ground ordnance arrived from Chamberlain.

09:30: Yarlaq airfield

The planes landed to a hellish sight. The airfields surrounds were packed with refugees, and in the distance the city was burning. The transports spent as little time on the ground as possible, depositing their supplies before taking on Diyaristani wounded for CASEVAC. By then, the Special forces were well on their way toward the front. They were almost entirely unaware of the debates back home.

Cressageland News Corporation (CNC) Report on the battle of Yarlaq:

The siege of Yarlaq entered a new stage today, as ISIS supporting forces, using suicide tactics, broke into the city. Diyaristani command structures are said to be heavily damaged by the fighting, and the flood of refugees continues fleeing east to escape the fighting. Infrastructure is said to be in a critical condition and, even more worryingly, the structural integrity of several of Yarlaq's skyscrapers has been called into question following the intense combat.

Although official government communiques insist the Government is holding the rebels, the increasing urgency of the governments efforts to bring in foreign allies tells a different story. Sources within the Government indicate that contacts with several nations, including Cressageland, have been established.

Disconcertingly for the government, rumours of a declaration of war from the Carribean Government continue to circulate, sparking intense debate in Chamberlain. One MP said today that it was 'A disgrace that the government was allowing an atrocity to unfold unopposed', whilst another said 'whilst humanitarian aid is welcome, this government should do nothing to bring the violence in the war to Cressageland'

The Government are yet to comment on the latest developments.

Amongst their impressive inventory of surface weaponry is a considerable component of our more advanced attack helicopters. Prime Minister Collins stood at the dispatch box, notes in hand, and began to speak

"It is my duty to house to inform them of the latest developments in Diyaristan. Yesterday, transport aircraft from the Air-Force landed in Yarlaq and Qashmar to deliver aid to the beleaguered peoples and refugees. Since then however, the situation has deteriorated. ISIS backed militants are in the process of overwhelming Yarlaq, and if Yarlaq falls the Diyaristani southern flank is unhinged and the government will likely be forced to a front line around the capital. For humanitarian reasons if nothing else, I'm sure I have the support of this house in saying that this is unacceptable.

Therefore I bring to the house today a letter from the government of Diyaristan, requesting military assistance. Experts from the foreign office assure me that this invitation makes any intervention in the conflict legal, as long as the rules and conventions of war are followed. As such I call for a motion allowing the use of the Royal Pejorative to pursue military action against the ISIS backed rebels."

At this, the house erupted in shouts of either support or opposition. Collins wasn't necessarily worried, he had a working majority and the whips had assured him of victory, but he still felt a wave of relief when the speaker read out the result.

"Ayes to the right, 358, no's to the left, 193, the motion therefore passes'.

Cressageland was on the way to conflict.

As soon as the vote was confirmed 'Operation slingshot' was in effect. Indeed before it was read out a squadron of 12 Tornado fighter-bombers sat on the tarmac, ready to fly, and ahead of them 5 Hercules transport craft carrying replacement ordnance was landing in Qashmar. However the real operation began as the vote was confirmed, as the air was filled with the roaring of jets and the droning of propellers.

As the next flight turned onto the runway, this one of 4 F-111 Aardvark bombers, Captain Charles Dunne looked at the list of flights still to go.

In total, 50 Tornados would be heading to Qashmar with the 5 Aardvark bombers.

Following them would be the 2nd Brigade of the 17th Airborne, 3000 men, 1000 of whom would be aboard 10 c-17 'Globemaster' transport planes, ready for immediate combat deployment. The remaining 2000 would be taking pre-arranged charter flights to Qashmar, ready for near immediate deployment. Along with these men went the Command staff for the Operation Wier, the on the ground operation. These were to be led by Major General Sean Hall, who had been dispatched with the earliest flight, and had just landing in Qashmar. His first job would be to co-ordinate the landing of his task force and its immediate resupply.

Following them would be 20 c-17s, carrying 10 Chinook helicopters,15 Cobra attack helicopters and 5 Apaches.

Just outside Qashmar: 23:00 Chamberlain time, 04:00 Diyaristan time

Major General Sean Hall was en-route to the suburb of Elevit, where he had been informed that a small office block lay abandoned. He intended to be its new occupant, using it as his command centre for the operations to come, along with logistical support for the incoming taskforce.

He was also getting information as to the activities of his special forces in Yarlaq, where they had just been given permission to call in airstrikes from the two Tornados in the country.

Yarlaq, 24:00 (Chamberlain Time), 05:00 Local Time

The Special Forces team, lying flat on a hill overlooking Yarlaq, spotted an ISIS convoy, lead by a captured tank, heading toward the city. Confirming again if they had permission to use the Tornado on station just to the east of the city, they turned the target identifier onto the lead tank and called in the airstrike. Within minutes, the distinctive roar of the Tornado's engines was audible, and seconds later the lead tank exploded as the Brimstone missile connected with its target. Almost simultaneously, the two trucks following the tank exploded in a similar fashion.

The wars opening shots had been fired.
