Welcome To Mattijana!

Mattijana is a huge safe nation with a significant, but proportionate population. It spans a fairly large range of climates with the far north a colder area, the central region temperate, the south Mediteranean and the South-East semi-desert. Petrovijanka, the capital city, is located almost exactly in the centre of the country at 214-232 metres above sea level. It has summer highs of around 28°C and lows of -5°C in the winter. There is a high level of sunshine for most of the year with precipitation mostly snowfall in the winter months.

The ZentraleAlpa, or central alps, are located in the centre-west of Mattijana, around two hours by high-speed train from Petrovijanka. They cover a fairly fast area, which is designated by the province with the same name. The capital of this province is the city of Matbirjke, located on the banks of the Sava Petrov river, (which also flows through Petrovijanka itself) at an altitude of almost 1000m above sea level. It is a relatively small city, but boasts a large variety of historical and cultural attractions, as well as being the nearest city to many of Mattijana's ski resorts.

Culturally, Mattijana can also be divided into six regions. The West of the country is largely Germanic whilst the centre North is a mix of Slavic and Germanic cultures, centred around Mattijana's second city, Burges. The North and East are mainly Eastern European (closest to Polish irl) whilst the Centre (where Petrovijanka is situated) and the South are Slavic (similar to the Slovenian and Croatian cultures). There is an Arabic community in the South-East.
All Mattijanans speak the official language, Mattijanan. However, due to this not being spoken anywhere else in the World, English and German are well-spoken throughout the country whilst Arabic is taken on by the most intelligent students (in addition to English and German) as well as by those in the South-East.
There is no official religion in Mattijana due to this mix of cultures. Islam is popular in the South-East and parts of the South whilst some in the East follow the Mattijanan Orthodox church. Most people hold no religious belief, but believe in the universal philosophy of being kind, welcoming and helpful to others. Even in religious communities, it is these principals that are most talked of with religious figures used to preach them.
Due to the mix/match nature of Mattijanan cultures, religions are also a little mixed up. This is the reason that most muslim women do not wear headscarves.

Attitudes to drink and sex are fairly liberal whilst there is good gender, sexual and racial equality. Social mobility is also good and the rich earn only twice as much as the poorest.

The government follows mildly socialist policies meaning the tax rate is fairly high, but schools, hospitals and other public services are all well-funded and reasonably-priced. Taxes on large businesses are higher than on small ones. The government building is the MattiStaja, which is situated on Staja square in the centre of Petrovijanka. All six regions have their own smaller congresses however. Politicians are generally appreciated and although public decisions are limited to elections and important political decisions where the main population is the most affected, most citizens feel well represented due to the numerous meeting and discussion opportunities with their local politician.
All parties follow a similar philosophy, but mainly disagree on where to fund the most. The MattijanaLeušaBuro is the current elected party, but other popular parties are the ViroBuro (who generally promote the needs of the environment) and the NašinalBuro (who promote funding for employment opportunities). Despite this attitude, unemployment benefits are actually quite low in order to encourage people to be hard-working.

Winter Sport In Mattijana

Mattijanans are big fans of domestic winter sport, although due to the general Mattijanan climate, summer sports are the most widely performed on the international stage. Having said that, almost the entire population of the Central Alps participate in some form of winter sport, be it skiing, snowboarding, skating, curling or sliding. Matbirjke is also home to a professional Hockey club and due to the modern artificial pitches used for hockey, the national sport of Mattijana remains accessible all year round.

The principal sports resort is situated in Ježarnico, however this is mainly a tourist base with fewer difficult areas for athletes. Therefore, the Tournament will take place at the Hollesbirjke, the most testing winter sports resort and occasional training base for many international athletes. It has two principal tracks, one suited for bobsleigh and one for skeleton with extensions for luge on both tracks.

About the Facilities

Name: Slonske-Lidenburg sliding centre.
Turns: 15
Distance: 1.3 km
The Slonske-Lidenburg or SLSC was the first sliding centre built at the Hollesbirjke running from around a third of the main ski slope down to the village of Skopjana. It features some more generic near-180 degree turns before a kink leads into the most demanding section of the track. Starting with a kink left, the ice leads into a steeply banked double pressured right hander. There is then little time for respite with a sharp left leading steeply downhill, through the smooth, but tricky Leisna chicane and then through the final few sweeping curves and back uphill 90° towards the finish line. The Slonske-Lidenburg plays host to the skeleton for men and women and to the runs 1 and 3 of the luge. To conserve the tradition of the centre, stands are smaller and old-fashioned, but still numerous and a recent refurbishment has seen a screen added at the bottom of the hill which can be watched be spectators on the hill outside.

Name:The Mattijana sliding centre
Turns: 13
Distance: 1.1km

The Mattijana sliding centre is a modern facility situated on the opposite side of the valley to the SLSC, but also winds down to the village of Skopjana. The facility is more suited to bobsleigh and luge with more sweeping corners placed in over shorter and sharper turns. The first obstacle faced by sliders is a kink which must be taken well to set up for the second turn- a long 90° left. This leads into a few sweeping turns which test both the balance of bobsleigh and crew. A shorter and steeper downhill section is then converted into speed through another long 90° section. A slightly sharper turn goes back down, through the Petrov chicane and into the finish area.

There are modern stands on the inside of the track where possible and also at the start and finish areas. There is also a large square where onlookers can watch on a screen.

Around Petrovijanka

Virtually in the dead centre of Mattijana, Petrovijanka was founded in 1450 and is centred around a large island (now called the PetroviOtok) in the middle of the Sava Petrov river. Staja square, the geographical and spiritual centre of the city, is in the middle of that island with the East river and West river (OstSava and VestaSava) surrounding the island. The city has since spread out on the mainland, but retains much of its impression and beauty a long way from the centre.

Petrovijanka is an architecturally stunning city with many buildings dating back to the 1700s and a good 2km radius before the buildings become more modern.
The city centre is based around Staja Square and then spreads out in circular streets from there. The main sights are the MattiStaja itself, the NašinalMusej (the national Mattijanan museum) the KatarinaTurn (a large nineteenth centry tower made of sandstone and steel which offers outstanding views of the city and its surrounding area) and the PetrovKera, an ornamental triple layered footbridge over the West River with an art exhibition on the top floor, a market on the middle floor and restaurants and cafes on the bottom floor.
Puljanka is the main music and theatre city in Mattijana. It is easily accessible by train and is roughly 1.5 hours by this means, however, concerts and plays are regularly put on in the NašinalTheatre in Petrovijanka and are incredibly high quality.

Heading to Mattijana

Postby Neu Engollon » Tue Oct 25, 2016 1:08 am

The bustle of Burgunden Interational was always constant. It was one of the busiest airports in the world and it never disappointed in letting anyone know. Show up late to get screened through security and you were guaranteed to miss your flight. Masses of tourists, business people and airport workers flowed by them as they waited in the side lounge.

Adrienne looked at her watch again, even though she’d done it twice in the last two minutes previous.
“This is ridiculous. Ren never pulls this shit. Something must have happened. We’re going to miss our flight out waiting for him.”
The whole NEBSA team was there, for the most part. They had one flight booked out, with a couple connections to carry them the long distance to Mattijana. The whole team but for Reinhard Feinlau, that is. No one seemed to notice that neither their NEBSA minder or coach were there, either. They had made sure the sleds had been loaded up with the help of Engol Air officials, then been escorted from the tarmac back into the terminal to wait for the flight to prepare to depart.

Olivier Choffard agreed.
“Probably. Anyone got the radio going on their player? Maybe check the traffic report and see if there was an accident on FR 2.”

Clarisse chimed in,
“Maybe we should get on now, and just a couple of us wait. Just so that most of us get there and can let the Mattijanans know what’s going on.”

Olivier took the idea up like it was his own.
“Yeah, hey, Coach? Maybe we should get on the phone with...Wait. Where’s Coach Schuller?”

The rest of the team fidgeted or looked at their phones, unsure of what to do.
Just then, their coach, Otto Schuller, the NEBSA lackey, by the name of Andolini, and two other men that seemed to be with them walked by. They searched for the rest of the team.

“Hey, Coach! We’re in here!”
Adrienne stepped out of the lounge.

“Hey, gang. Man, I’m glad we found you. Crazy here.”
The group stopped. All eyes in the lounge were on the two strangers.

“Coach, Ren isn’t here. We don’t have the whole team. They’re going to start boarding soon.”

“Um...yeah. This is Reinhard.” He pointed to one of the men, who had shaggy red hair and a neutral expression through a mass of freckles. The man had a small carry on slung over his shoulder.

“What?! What the cozzfick are ya talkin’ bout? Is this a joke?”
Oskar Rogglietto, who’d been silent up until now broke in. He was teammates with Reinhard Feinlau. The real one, anyway. Not the man the Coach was pointing to now.

Andolini, the NEBSA wrangler, broke in, cutting off any excuses that Coach Schuller might try to cook up.
“Listen, this is Reinhard Feinlau now. He knows what he’s doing. We don’t have time to explain, I’m going to check through everyone’s tickets.”

The fourth man, in a slick suit finally spoke.
“I’m going to ask that you also give me all your phones…” He popped a canvas sack out, widening the opening.
“There will be no more communications back home until we arrive in Mattijana.”

“What the fuck!?”

“Who the fuck are you?”

“I’m Agent Hoenhauer, from the Government.”

“Ya ain’t gettin’ my phone, Agent Hornhobber.”

“Oh, I am.”
Five more agents walked up. They seemed to appear out of nowhere, but in reality they had been at the Gate desk for the flight, making sure to bump some of the passengers so they could go along for the ride.

“We’re not going to have a scene here in front of everyone, are we? It’s this simple: From now on, you cooperate, and you get to compete. You all train for these competitions and there’s few enough International events, right? So, don’t blow all that hard work.”

“What the hell is going on?”

“Where’s our Renny?”

“We better do as they say, what if they do something to Renny because of us?”

Skeleton crew woman Janine Winzlich had had enough. She had a small, high pitched voice and no one had ever heard her swear before, let alone get mad. She didn't curse for a reason, mostly because she wasn't very good at it.
“Now...Now, I don’t have to give up my phone. I want to know what’s going on, you...you fucky dorky assey-shit!”

“Did she just say ‘assey-shit’?”

"...And 'fucky-dorky'?"

“Drop the phone in the bag, NOW!”
The agent approached her menacingly. He seemed a bit exasperated by this point.

Luger Erik Manadagio had reached his limit, too.
“Just a minute here. Last I checked, this was a free nation. You need to back off from Janine. She hasn't done anything wrong."

“It still is, Mr...Manadagio...A free country. Don’t you value our country enough to trust us?”

“I value my country. Not whatever fascist country you work for.”

“I represent the Confederacy just as you are about to do. We’d like to try to keep it a free nation, but sometimes we need to take extraordinary measures to do so. I don’t have time to explain it all, and we’re running out of time here. Perhaps we can explain when we arrive there.
Now...Let’s get ready to board, shall we? Phones in the bag. Tickets out.”

The Coach stepped forward,
“Everyone just cooperate. Let’s head out so we can explain later. Okay? We worked hard for this, why let this get in the way? We don’t have much time left.”

They finally, grudgingly gave in. Dropping phones in the bag and checking in at the gate as they called for passengers to board. Everyone was adamant that they get that promised explanation when they landed.

They arrived in Mattijana and tried to push all the surreal happenings from their minds as they prepared for their first runs in the Iced Runnings tournament. This was the big show and despite the bizarre things thrust on them over their journey to Mattijana, and the disappearance of one of their teammates, they tried to carry on as best they could.

Some of them did as well as they could have hoped, while a few of the other teams had less than optimal runs. They were obviously rattled by the events of their journey to the event and what was going on around them. All the Neu Engollian athletes were still denied access to their phones. A few went out to try to buy new cheap ones at the local electronics and cell provider stores, and were thwarted by what they now knew had to be a NESA (Neu Engollian Security Agency) thug. Thug might not have been the most appropriate word, but Hoenhauer sure acted like it.

Oskar had had a quick chance to call home and found that he couldn’t connect to any number he remembered anyway. So it was all for naught. They were blocking cell communications somehow. Maybe with the collusion of Mattijanan authorities?

While a few were out doing their runs, the rest gathered in Adrienne’s hotel room instead of supporting their teammates. They debated their options, as their desire to know what was going on and why they had a faux Reinhard Feinlau was overtaking their need to concentrate on the task at hand, winning the Iced Runnings and sticking together as a team.
“So...we can’t communicate with home?”

“You know what, now that I think of it, I haven’t been able to get any news from home at all.”

“Where would you get it? Why would there be any coverage of the Confederacy here?”

“I got into the business center of the hotel and got a wifi log in.”

“And you’re telling us this now?!”

“So what did you see? Or not see?...Anything is helpful.”

“Well, I couldn’t connect to any of the news or social media sites from back home. I just got one of those buffer circles. I guess I just figured the wifi was lagging and gave up. I didn’t really think too much about it at the time.”

“How could you not...Nevermind.”
Erik walked over to the TV.
“I have an idea. NETV is pretty widely syndicated. Maybe we could get it as one of the channels here.”

“I doubt it. We’re pretty far removed from Teremara here.”

“Give it a shot.”

Erik turned on the TV and clicked on to the cable guide channel. With luck, sure enough, there was a listing for NETV. The tension in the room was palpable as he entered the number of the channel into the remote. The logo of NETV showed up, superimposed over a rainbow pattern. ‘Technical difficulties’. He threw down the remote on the floor.

“Shit! Cozzfick!”

“What the hell?!”

Oskar shushed them.
“Accorzu...Okay…Listen. Tonight, when all the runs are done for the day, I say we bumrush this fake Renny Feinlau. Trap him in his room and corner him. He’s gotta have some answers, right?”

“And do what? Threaten to beat him up? I’m sure they’ve got something a lot weightier over his head than anything we could do to him.”

“Yeah, well, you got a better idea?”

“Uh...No.”

“Then tonight, after dinner. We’ll keep tabs on him to make sure he stays in the hotel, try and herd him to his room if we can. Got it?”

A couple of the ladies got up,
“We don’t want to be part of this. This is not going to go well.”

“Yeah, I didn’t sign on for this.”

“Don’t you want to know what’s going on? This is how we find out.”

The rest of them agreed. A plan was set and they would follow through tonight.
TG me with questions if you got some, especially about GE&T or PMCs.

Erik Manadagio had some skill working hotel door locks. No one thought to ask him how. His sister, Lilia, had no insight either. In fact, she had decided that she would recuperate after her tough run without going through all this nonsense. She had gotten the 12th slot and wasn’t happy about it, but those were the breaks.
Erik nodded after saying it.
“Night, sis. I’ll let you know how it goes. So yeah, guys, basically, if they have the right kind of door, we can use like an old credit card or some other plastic thing to slide it behind. It’s gotta be an older type door. A lot of these card key slot doors you can’t do it...like this one. Shit.”

Oskar snorted.
“Just knock, asshole.”
Which is what he proceeded to do. It’s not like they were being all that stealthy, anyway. A dozen people mumbling outside his door in the hallway, the fake Renny Feinlau had to hear them by now.

Tap-tap-tap

They waited nervously staring at the door. After about a minute, the ginger haired impostor answered the door. He had the safety bar on so it would only open a crack.
“Yeah? Ah shit, whaddaya want?”

“Let us in.”
The fake Renny shifted his eyes back and forth, taking in the faces of his current teammates.

“Let us in, man. We’re not going away and we’re only going to get more obnoxious.”

He sighed. He closed the door, and they could hear the safety bar being taken off, then he opened it again. He didn’t say anything, just opened it wide and they all filed in.
Oskar grabbed his arm as he was the last one in. He forcefully pulled the mystery man over to the bed and pushed him down on it.

“What? Ya gonna do something ta me?”

“Stop being funny. You know why we’re here. Start talking.”

“Okay. Great runs guys. I think we’ve had some success here and…”

“Fucking shut up! No, wait! Shut up about that shit. Ya know what we want! Who are you?”

“Oh, yeah, ha. That. I’m Reinhard Feinlau. I may not look it, but I’ve got a passport and papers to prove it.” He pointed over to the nightstand.

“Seriously, dude. Who are you?” Erwin Douchain was reaching his breaking point but you’d never know it. He spoke quietly and firmly.

“You of all people should remember me, Erwin. We raced at Albertville, at the Rhone Invitational. Remember?” He spread his hands then framed his own face.
“Andy Trevault? Only the top ranked in all of Jura canton, man.”

A couple of the others snapped their fingers as recognition dawned.
“Oh yeah…”

“Shit man, yeah, you were good.”

“I still am good, dicks. All you assholes should remember me. I was at the NEBSA team tryouts last year.”

“Okay, boo hoo. Ya didn’t make it. So why are you here now?”

Andy looked at the TV for a moment. It was some Mattijanan cartoon that had English subtitles at the bottom. He looked back up and around the room of sliders.
“Renny was pretty sick when we left.”

“Sick with what?”

“I dunno. Like Osprey flu. I think that’s what the NESA dude called it. Type K or something.”

“Osprey flu, yes. Type AN K5, to be exact.”

They recoiled and parted like the Red Sea, shocked to have the intruder behind them.
The NESA agent had walked in after them, as no one had bothered to close the door. It wasn't all that spooky.
“Surprise! You all need to be a little more stealthy. The whole point of this…” He pointed at Andy, “...was to allay suspicions, not have you all sneaking around in a buffoonish manner and drawing more attention.”

“More attention to what, G Man? To a guy with the flu?”

“To many people with the flu. A deadly epidemic. I’m sorry, but your friend, Reinhard...He didn’t make it. He was one of the early cases.”

Gasps all around.

“Epidemic? Like, what happened? Are our families okay?” It was jumping immediately to everyone’s mind as their grief and shock turned to immense worry.

“No, I...Well, I don’t know for sure. Listen, you all were clueless...That’s harsh. Lemme restate that. You were focused on here, which is fine. But none of you noticed the Militia soldiers at the airport before you left? The people with the dust and respirator masks walking around? No. Well, let it sink in.”

“How come we can’t reach anyone? Where are our phones?”

“I have your phones. I can give them back to you, but they’ll do you no good. There’s no service back to the Confederacy.”

“Why? Did they stop service on purpose? Are the towers down?”

“From here you’d need satellites, but that’s not the point. Well, what would follow is that things went kind of bad after you all left. Very bad. Things shut down. Yes, the government put a shut down on the Internet, cell service, media. Yes, we can do that. Things spun out fast, though. A lot quicker than we expected. By the time we were getting ready to leave and prepping Andy here, there were already cases popping up next door in Gaul. The reason they wanted to freeze up the media and communications was to cut down on panic. The more people rushing around, the more this thing could spread. Then, before we left, they wanted you guys to carry on, as if nothing was going wrong. Confidence in the Confederacy, in our economy. We wanted nobody to be the wiser that things were going shitty so fast…”

“Well, why are you telling us now?”

“Maybe it’s better that you have all the information. I need you all to help keep the facade up. This is for your country. You’re sledding for your country, maybe you can do this, too.”

“How do we know our families are okay, though?”

“Well, you don’t, but you don’t know they’re not, either. Look, I’m in the same boat. I lost contact with HQ yesterday afternoon, and that was a secure line. There’s no getting through, so don’t keep asking me to check, because it ain’t gonna happen.”

“What’s to keep us from telling the Mattijanans and trying to get home?”

“Well, they’ll quarantine you and start testing you. You won’t be able to compete. Really, what else do you all have left to do but compete?”

“Wait...Wouldn’t they know if planes can’t fly to Neu Engollon anymore?”

“There’s no direct flight from here to back home. It’s too far. No one gives a shit about Neu Engollon this far out from Teremara.”

“Still, like, travel authorities talk to each other…”

“They’re letting planes fly in, just not out. At least last I heard that was the case. So, listen...We got some rules that I’m gonna have to lay down, now that you all know this stuff. Life is going to be very different from now on...”
