Maybe a zombie apocalypse: apart from the fact it is unrealistic, it would be fun to watch.

West Roman Empire is best Roman Empire. Stay rekt heretical pleb.

Either way in any of these scenarios, there is a high probability that I die. While I am friends with farmers, have a good backup plan and am prepared; the probabilities say that I die. Whether its by a lucky shot from a marauder or some disease. The problem with bullets and guns is that no matter how well trained you are, bullets don't care. They kill all the same. However, while I may die to the hordes of people leaving Chiraq, I have confidence that the area I'll be defending will survive. Thank god for ex-military types love of congregating in one area. Also NG armory nearby as well. We may very sit this one out with 105 mm howitzer and 120 mm mortar support. Lets see them human wave that (until we run out of ammunition for the big guns).

If anyone is a fan of the Total War games, a team of people are at the beta stage of a Rome Total War mod centered around a zombie outbreak in Rome. I think it would be awesome when it's released.

I'd prefer trying to survive after a super volcano eruption. For one thing (if it's Yellowstone that goes off), I live far enough away to where the ash isn't as significant of a problem as close by the volcano. Second, the community I live in generally prefers to stick together when things get rough, typically financially (though there are a few nuts out here) .

As for surviving it, I'd stock up on emergency supplies (emergency food storage, a firearm or two for self defense against said nuts inb4 Good Guy with Gun argument arises, and heating units if/when the power goes out) and generally sit tight unless the situation warrants moving from my area.
Humans are monsters, we will never change, we will always want to claw out the throats of those with a difference in opinion, we will never be in an age of peace because of our lust for war, poverty will continue to exist as long as monetary needs exist. We rape, enslave, and conquer with no regards to others. We live by the sword, and we will, justifiably, die by the sword.

Hope is for unrealistic idealists. Pessimism is your friend.

Where abouts do you live? From some estimations most of the US would be under feet of ash.

Indiana.

....actually, come to think of it, sitting it out may not be the best idea since my family lives in a valley. Great for disrupting severe weather systems, but volcanic ash....

You need the proper bayonets these days. Not the puny M9 standard-issue knifes they call bayonets but the real bayonets that make men shiver in fear as the enemy enters your trench. Of course you wouldn't use the real bayonets like slashing implements but for stabbing the eyes or skulls of zombies.

The operative word here is "depending." If the aliens are a species of merciless domination, you're dead. If they're malevolent conquerors, good chance that you're dead, unless you are offering something. A species that's more focused on resource gathering and just happen to think Earth is a great place to stop by, eh, it can go either way if you stand in their path. A species who promotes galactic peace, world by world, I think we'll all get along just fine.

.... I wish that the latter aliens would come here.

If they're good it wouldn't be the end of the world. For bad aliens I think they'd jump on the chance on having a humans spy or even just a human to act as a friendly face of their occupation. Collaborators are always valuable assets. I'd take the deal even if it's a "We'll kill you last" sort of deal. Better than dying first and I might get some sexy cars out of it.

For me, I reckon the end of the world will just be ridiculous over the top flooding, because of melting ice caps. I mean looking at some predictions for the future world map, Australia is practically non existent.
