No. Athiesm is the belief that there is no God or heaven or hell. It doesn't come from a neurological disorder, it is simply a belief they choose to follow.

Speaking as an atheist and nihilist, I think the issue is likely that some people are terrified of the possibility that the universe doesn't give a shit about us. For some people, that's scarier than the idea that an omnipotent narcissist is controlling everything.

Frankly, I find the concept that the universe is harsh and uncaring, rather than actively malevolent, quite comforting.

First off, I admire you for your intellectual consistency - regarding your being a nihilist. Many years ago I was torn between nihilism and theism before finally settling on theism (Christianity to be specific). The idea that the universe doesn't give a sh*t doesn't terrify me, it depresses me, but it doesn't terrify me. In the end nihilism didn't fit with my personal experience of life.

I could see that.

Honestly, I don't condemn people for having religious beliefs. It's done a lot of good for civilization as a whole, not to mention charities and what not. If people need that to get through the day or tough times, then more power to them.

Perhaps it's my personal love of Cosmic Horror that's put me in this mindset, but I've never really found much need for theism in my life, and therefore I no longer consider myself a theist. That implies that I was ever one, though, as I distinctly remember only going to church because my parents made me.

I dunno. Different strokes, I suppose.

Btw; it really peeves me off when parents force their children to go to church if they don't want to. I was lucky, my parents always encouraged me to make the decision for myself.

One doesn't need to be incapable of abstract thought due to not believe in a particular abstract object. Atheists are obviously capable of abstract thought, as well as the belief in a god. Many former atheists did believe in a god at some point, they didn't suddenly develop a neurological disorder and become atheists.
