Dave Mirra, the versatile BMX freestyle rider who owned the most X Games medals in history through the summer of 2013, died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police in Greenville, North Carolina.

Authorities said they responded to an apparent suicide and discovered his body in a truck.

Mirra, 41, was married with two children. He had been visiting friends in the area, officials said.

Man, that sucks. I still have a copy of Freestyle BMX 2 stored away in my game drawer. Heck, I even remember that crappy BMX XXX game he lent his name to. Sucks to see him go out like that.

I remember playing his first BMX game on the PS2 way back, the music was brilliant.

He later became a triathlete and "Iron Man" competitor which is serious level fitness and training. With all he's accomplished and help create, I'm very surprised and saddened at his suicide.

He didn't lend his name to BMX XXX. He was going to, but found out about the explicit content and decided not to.

According to recent reports:

- Mirra posted a tribute to his wife just hours before his death; a photo of him and his wife indulging in a champagne toast, and captioned it, “My rock! Thank god.”

- He was apparently deeply depressed since his retirement in 2011, being unable to find anything to replace involvement in extreme sports. Friends close to Mirra claim this is a definite factor, leading to his mental state prior to taking his own life. According to one pal, Dave was even talking about building a new speed cycling track just hours before his death.

- It is being said that Mirra might have suffered from CTE. The claim was proposed by the mayor of Dave’s hometown, Allen Thomas, comparing Dave to the late NFL player and CTE victim, Junior Seau, and based it on Dave's career and how he took up boxing days before he died. However, he added that it's "way too early" to discuss testing Mirra's brain for the disease.

- He may have been suffering from a deep depression for more than a decade, according to a newly resurfaced interview with People Magazine:

“I do get sad. I get sad for stupid things, like reading the news about things that go on in the world,” he told the publication in 2004.”I don’t like hearing about pain and suffering, especially, like, kids and poor people. That makes me sad. I think I feel things deeply.”

Though considered one of the most decorated X Games BMX riders of all time, Dave went on to tell the magazine that his competitive background may have been part of the problem, as it put an incredible amount of pressure on him. “I’m an intense guy, probably because I compete. I am really hard on myself if I don’t succeed, and I get really high on myself when I win,” he said. “I’m the one who sets the hardest expectations on myself … I don’t want to be good enough. I want to be the best.”

Part of the problem with teaching men that their value comes from what they do, rather than being inherent in their humanity and such, is this loss of self-worth and esteem upon retirement.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
