Wyrth took a knee to run out the clock the rest of the way, ending a 38-6 rout of The Great Pond. Tossing the ball to the referee, the Allamunnic team participated in the usual post-game pleasantries before running to the locker room to hear from their coach. Huddling out of the cold inside the locker room, they sat down on the appropriate benches.

"Alright, good job, boys and girls," Baeryk Vaalburger said with a chuckle. "We're pretty much locked up a playoff spot, now. We've got one game left, for the group title against Devonta. But, unless there's some bizarre fuckery, even by this tournament's standards--" here, there were chuckles as the players recalled some of the more interesting occurrences of the last few weeks, chief among them a masked man taking the field during their second-most-recent game and shooting cake at the audience.

To say the Allamunnae had been confused was putting it mildly. Still, they had persevered, despite the weirdness, and reeled off five straight wins as they headed into their final match-up. "We're in prime position to finish undefeated for the first time in team history. We take out Devonta, and then we just have to match a legendary feat," he said with a grin. "But frankly, that is more than within this team's capabilities. We are good enough to do that. We just have to start it by going out and taking care of business in our next match. Now, who's on-board?"

The answer was a mass of shouts from the players. After all, an undefeated season was, by most reckonings, the only accomplishment the program could not yet boast. To say the Regulars were determined to pull that off would also be an understatement. So, only one game to go before the real fun began.

Gennadius Kiefer after group returns
Hard Fight For A Close Miss

Sept-Iles, QUE MSK+7 9:25pm - The mood after Wytréno's final game in Group F was incredibly somber, the entire team tense in anticipation of the final standings. With high-scoring teams like Taeshan, Armeia and Neu Engollon in the group, it was obviously going to be a long-shot for the team to make the round of 16.

The somber mood only grew more tense and unhappy after scores were properly released and the final rankings publicized. Although Wytréno made a good rally and pulled third in their group, they missed completely the cutoff to advance.

"On the bright side," quarterback Cătălin Jelen told us in a rather nervous interview, "our record wasn't-- so far off from Taeshan. If you just look at the games, not the scores. And-- really, it was incredibly close to the United States of Devonta, who actually made the cut. So-- maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe we'll get to go home."

There's no news yet from the National Re-Entry Office, but family members of the entire team have already begun lining up with petitions to bring the gridiron players home. "They did quite well, given how little attention the sport gets in the patria," Carme Jelen, mother of Cătălin Jelen, told us from her position outside the Re-Entry Office. "So we're hopeful. The Emperor has been in such a good mood since the Olympics that we're hopeful."

Keep your eyes here for repatriation reports.

Jags Cap Off Finale with a Win

With the season in the books, the Salgetian Jags finished the season with a 2-4 record on their first season. It was a great game for both sides, and fans will be happy as they travel home knowing a future has been set for many more seasons to come.

The crate symbolized hopes and dreams for the fans, as they enjoyed their meals in the stadium as they watch the game unfold. Even some of the opposing crowd got to taste the cuisine of TNOD.

Delaney Hoffman, who was subbed out on the Jags first victory, threw way better than he did in his first four games. He threw 28 of 38 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns. Fred Porter, who hasn't seen much this season, ran for 100+ yards and broke six tackles on 12 attempts. The defense also capitalized as they returned a fumble for a TD.

All in all, this was, as not many would say, a productive season for the Jags in their inaugural season in the World Bowl. We'll see if the Jags can improve next season as they will go back home and retry to improve themselves on what will be something to look for.
TNOD's Achievements:
11/1/15 - Announcement of Inaugural Season of WB Team
1/11/16 - First Win in the World Bowl (vs Kohr, 31-3)
2/29/16 - Announcement of run in NSCAA's March Madness Tourney

The Nation of Downination on its establishment: "Prevail in one thing, Dominance!"
TNOD's Official Motto: "You have to stay determined, no matter what!"

Postby Schottia » Fri Jan 15, 2016 4:49 am

'Well done guys, that was a really good performance out there today.' Lewis Patterson ushered his players off the pitch after their final group games against Sioux Lookout. 'We did what we needed to do, and that will help us secure the best possible draw for the round of sixteen.' Getting to the quarterfinal had been a massive sticking point for Schottia, over the last couple of cycles, and he wasn't taking any chances this time in his first season in charge. He had wanted to give one or two players a bit of a run out, but he had stopped well short of starting the entire reserve pool. It was an easy decision to throw in the likes of Mia Little, Nick lovelle, and David Henson, who had already featured to some extent here in Quebec. However he resisted the temptation to pitch 16-year-old wonderkid Ally Ellan, who was seen as the long-term answer to Schottia's defensive woes. The middle line breaker was a ferocious tackler, and already stood at 187 centimetres with no doubt a little still to grow. Despite his credentials it was far better, Patterson thought, to get through the group comfortably, and with a shred of luck avoid one of the nightmare second place finishers in the next round.

This was a far cry from his own playing days, and he often wondered if the best thing he ever did was retire. In doing so he had allowed Gabriella Alessi to enter the starting line-up, a player who in all honesty, was twice the quarterback he ever was. If he was being brutally honest, when he first went to watch one her games, the eighteen-year-old Alessi was already better than he was at thirty-five. By all accounts she was just one of those individuals who was good at everything they tried their hands at. She perhaps gave a little away to some opponents in terms of height, weight and throwing distance; but nothing in pace, guile, and imagination. If a big pass-rusher got a hold of her, she would likely be mincemeat; but dropping the shoulder, her surges forward could catch a lot of defences by surprise. The way that whole forward line had worked as a unit all tournament long gave Patterson much cause for optimism. Big Rupert Kenny at centre, and the way he sets up the line are so important to allowing Alessi and the other more creative players to dictate play on their own terms. Nowhere near the biggest team in the tournament with regards to average pack weight, Kenny brought more to the table than simply snapping the ball back, he adds some much needed substance to the offensive line.

This year's World bowl had ended up being a shorter tournament than last year's, with only six group games instead of the ten they played in Cosumar. This could very well play into Schottia's hands as well, Patterson though as he headed down the tunnel. His head was already buzzing as he couldn't wait to see the results from the other groups so he could begin planning. They had gone ten games undefeated in their group last year before losing out to 36-10 Saintland a result, which Patterson had blamed on fitness. The World Bowl XXIV champions had a four-from-four record over Schottia, and were thankfully not taking part in this tournament.

There was a chorus of cheers, and jubilation as the player headed down the tunnel just ahead of him. Again, this was something relatively new, and back in Patterson's day, victory had been a much more modest affair. He didn't doubt that they picked up this bravado and self-belief from watching the way some of the other nations carried on. It wasn't a problem; it just further illustrated the changing shape of the Schottic, game as they looked to redefine themselves as something other than a bunch of plucky underdogs. In many ways it reinforced something that Patterson had been thinking for a long time, and that was that this wasn't his dream anymore, or not his alone at least. The sport was gathering momentum in Schottia, and the young players didn't feel like underdogs, because most of them had never been one to start with.

He thought again about his first World Bowl final, and that moment in the park in Handon. It wasn't even a footnote in the history books, it was prehistory for these players, and they would need to find their own path one way or another.

In his pocket he felt his lucky photograph, the smooth surface now scarred with folds and creases. 'Right everyone gather round.' He said as he closed the door to the dressing room behind him with a decisive shove. 'There is something I want to share with you all, something which means a lot to me. He walked up to the white board and with one of the magnetic counters attached the photograph of him and his ex-partner at the World Bowl finals in the Babbage Islands. 'This photograph as been with a very very long time...'

'Is that you in the picture?' David Cowden blurted out in amazement.

'...yes David it is, but if we could just get back to...'

'And was that your wife?' Gabi Alessi stood up pointing past Patterson at the white board.

'...no it's not it's...

'Was that your girlfriend?' She asked before he could finish.

'...yes, but please...'

'How of were you then coach? Where was that picture taken?'

'RIGHT! Enough please!' Patterson waved a hand instructing Gabi and the others to pipe down. 'I'm about to explain all of that, just give me a chance.' His appeal for silence was met eventually, as the players simmered down. 'This picture was taken twenty years ago, outside the stadium of the first Wold Bowl final I ever went to see. I remember that day like it was yesterday, and it was quite possibly the most important day of my life. It was the excitement of watching that game, which made me decide to set up a Gridiron team in Schottia, that made me want to become a quarterback, and made me vow one day to win the trophy.' He looked around at all of his players, he had made up his mind, he needed to do this for himself. 'That dream was the driving force behind all of this, had it not been for my granddad giving me the money for my flight there is a good chance none of us would be standing here today. But that was my dream, not yours.' He pulled the picture from the wall and looked at it one last time. 'We all need to make our own dreams, our own ambitions, our own narratives - and we can't be encumbered by the past. The thing is, when we make it to the knockout stages of the World Bowl I think the only one of us who is still surprised is me. You guys know you're that good, you believe you are going to win games, and I don't think in all honesty I did too, until now.' Patterson ripped the photo in two and stuck it back in his pocket. 'So there goes the past,' he said with an awkward laugh, rubbing the back of his head. 'And now here's to the future and to your triumphs, not mine!'

Extended interview with the Sea Cows' coach ahead of the World Bowl finals.

Lisa Dawlish with Ignatius Mori

LD: Congratulations on making it to the round of 16. Did you ever think you'd make it this far?

IM: Thanks Lisa, we've been close before, but this world bowl has been very tough and to pull through is amazing and to come back from our biggest ever loss to win every other game is a really good effort from the team.

LD: Looking back at the first world bowl, how do you think the team has progressed?

IM: Well, we know how to play now, for a start. That first world bowl, we knew the basics, but we had no concept of the tactics. Actually, I think that's one of the reasons we did so well - Lizzie was making up tactics no-one had ever seen before and our opponents couldn't predict it. I suppose it looked like we were being unconventional, but really we didn't know what were doing. That's something we've tried to keep, that sort of unpredictability, although we can be conventional if we need to.
Another thing we've worked on is identifying our strengths - we've brought the kicking game in, done a lot of work to build our defence to the state it is today.

LD: Did you think when you started that the team would be in this position, ranked 32nd in the world, and top 16 in the tournament?

IM: it's been pretty surprising, hasn't it? Honestly, I never expected to win a single game that first tournament. When I first started, it was just for the university. The government funded us and we'd send the boys to represent Barunia. That was the deal, but I don't think anyone expect it to pay off the way it has.

LD: Looking at the next step, the Sea Cows were scheduled to face the Allamunnic States, although that has now been changed. How did you fee about the prospect of facing the world champions?

IM: I'd say we weren't really worried, because yeah, we're the underdog in that match-up, but we feel like the underdog in every game we play. I mean, the teams we face are professionals. Our guys don't even play at an amateur level.

LD: There is plenty of talent in the side though. Who's been your pick of the tournament so far?

IM: That's really a difficult question given the nature of gridiron teams. Like, we have a good quarterback in Ryan Dunne, but he'd be useless in Boswell's position, and vice versa. Well, there's two, Dunne and Boswell, let's see, receivers, I don't think Hammond's done his best in the snow, Roger Taylor's done well, and I'm really liking Josh Bell, he's a good kicker too. Speaking of kicking, Bill Holman has been absolutely crucial for us, and he has not let us down, he's been brilliant.
Defensively, Marc DeLeon has been an absolute brick, I've relied on him more than Meyer or any other tackle. Kiefer Harris had a pretty good game at defensive end, I might look at giving him more time.

LD: So now that the team has gotten this far, and of course possibly further in to the tournament, where do you see the sport going in Barunia?

IM: Well, what really needs to happen is that we need players with actual game experience between world bowls. So yeah, a domestic comp would be nice, but realistically that's a long way away. What needs to happen short-term is we need to get these players out there, send them off to play professionally in other countries. Now if they can tell others that they learnt their skills at Karl Marx Uni, then what we would hope to see is that KMU starts getting on the map as a gridiron uni. Suddenly we get foreign students coming here to study and be part of the programme at the same time, and we start to build up a base of domestic and foreign talent in the country. Then we can start to think of a league. But we've got to get the players we have now out here playing professionally first.

LD: The Sea Cows next game is against Thereisnogodistan. What's the strategy for the Sea Cows going in to the match?

IM: Well, they're a university team, a bit like the Barunians, I suppose you could call us a semi-university team. That means they're a very young side, and we'd expect them to try and outpace us. I'd say we have the offensive talent to neutralise that advantage, and we'll probably try and just sit back a little and let them try and punch through. They're an aggressive team, and we'll see if we can use that to our advantage and try and pick six or force an error.

LD: Thanks for your time coach, and good luck with the rest of the tournament.

IM: No problem, thanks Lisa.

As Devonta's kick returner streaked by down the sideline, Vaalburger looked a little miffed, standing with his hands in his pockets as snow fell lightly. The opposite sideline was erupting in cheers, and several of the Regulars looked rather cross at this turn of events, especially on the defense.

"Well shit," Vaalburger said. "That usually works out better." Looking somewhat confused, he continued walking down the side line toward where the offense was gathering, even as the kick-off team was coming off the field. He noted that a few of them looked to be mentally kicking themselves, and several, the kicker, Kaarl Hunt included, looked disgusted. Vaalburger saw them walk towards their coordinator, and he was not overly worried. One error was not worth getting worked up for. They had gone five full games without incident. Now, if it turned into a pattern...

He looked back at the offense. Going into their sixth game in the frigid cold in a group that had required them to play their best to stay ahead, the line in particular looked a little banged up. Several of the linemen were sporting visible bruises, and a patchwork of braces, light casts, and padding had been added outside of their normal panoply to help with the healing. Them and the others' faces were reddened from the cold, but their expressions were confident, either neutral and unconcerned or smiling slightly. They seemed hardly worried about the team's first trailing of the tournament.

"Alrighty, boys and girls," Baeryk said to them. The whole eleven looked at him levelly, waiting to hear what their coach had to say. "That means the onus is on us..." He glanced up and sighed, rolling his eyes as a surprise two-point-conversion attempt was successful. "To get a score and get this thing back on track," he said. "Sorry about that, but there's nothing for it, now. Think you're up for the task?" he asked, knowing perfectly well what their answer would be.

As one, they replied with derision, snorts, sighs, and laughs. The head coach liked the blithe confidence, and nodded. "Good. I would expect nothing less. You know we've scripted out this drive for the most part, but if we see something we like, feel free to audible or send us some input and we can modify it accordingly," he said. "But... well, no sense in deviating from our methods now." With that, he turned to watch the progress on the answering kick-off. He was pleased to see Anna Eriklunn secure the catch tightly before taking off, returning the ball to the Allamunnic 24 before being tripped up. Snapping on their helmets, the offense trotted out onto the field, getting set quickly.

He was pleased to see the line put their hands down, set before the opposing defense had managed to line-up properly. He was even more pleased by the way Graagur Wyrth did not waste time, getting the ball snapped before the Devontan team was ready. There was no trickery necessary this time around, and he simply handed the ball off to Bryndyn Traewyk, who ran on Torren Tormundsunn's hip, holding the ball high and tight to respond to slippery conditions.

Even more pleasing was the way Tormundsunn flattened a Devontan linebacker, leaving a clear middle for Traewyk. The young tailback, scooped up off of Dunnmaar's practice squad the previous year, lowered his shoulders and chugged ahead, picking up speed easily and shedding a few clumsy arm-tackles. A moment later, he was in the secondary, powering his way through a corner, a safety running along side him, trying to overtake him.

They actually were successful, in that, getting between Bryndyn and the endzone. That, however, proved to be a mistake, as the young tailback kept his shoulders low and opted to simply plow his way through the hapless safety, running them over for the touchdown. Swelling with emotion, Traewyk picked himself up off the ground, yelled at the Devontan section of the crowd, and spiked the ball. A moment later, his linemen were mobbing him, and he gave several of them appreciative pats on the shoulders or helmets.

Not bothering to get ambitious, Hunt was more than happy to boot the follow-up PAT. The ambition was saved for the next play.

When Vaalburger dialed up an on-side kick in the first quarter.

Hunt, a consummate professional of his chosen craft, nailed the pooch kick perfectly, getting it to bounce high into the air, right in a gap in the opponent's kick-off coverage, eleven yards down-field. With a fierce grin, Junn Lindstrom got under the ball and snatched it from the air before one of their opponents could get it.

That put the ball just on the Devontan side of midfield. Lovely. The offense immediately ran back out and pulled the exact same quick-moving trick they had used on the play before, once again catching the Devontans unprepared. This time, though, Traewyk took a fake handoff while Wyrth wheeled around, kept clean by some vicious blocks from the right guard and tackle. Scanning downfield, he saw Emma Kaarlsunn beat her man, and with a minimum of wind-up or fuss, he launched it to her.

The pass was beautiful, quick, perfect spin, arcing low but clearing the defensive back, hitting Kaarlsunn in-stride forty yards downfield (and with velocity to spare; it had become clear over the tournament just how strong Wyrth's arm was). Turning on her jets, Kaarlsunn bolted away from the corner, zipped past the safety, and added her own tally to the scoreboard. Just like that, the Regulars were back on top.

By half-time, the Regulars were leading 21-8, but the tone of the game was not even that close. As it was, Vaalburger pulled the starters partway through the third quarter, and left the back-ups in to finish off their rivals for the group lead. The damage was done; the Devontans had lost their fight, and it was a relatively simple matter for the Regulars to boot one last field goal to put the game away early in the fourth.

Which meant the Regulars would, once more, move onto the Round of Sixteen. Not that anyone was surprised. It had been seventeen years since the Regulars had last missed the knock-out rounds. And their opponent, Frenline Delpha, though not to be discounted (after all, they had made the playoffs) was not one that was likely to make them lose much sleep.

"We all know how this goes, ladies and gentlemen," Vaalburger said after the game. "We go out next week, we play our best, cover your assignments, keep the mistakes out, and we should be golden. We'll game-plan, of course, but let's set a tone that makes them have to worry about us."

Viva Dicce's Guide to the Round of 16 Nations

Tomorrow, the Round of 16 of the 28th World Bowl will be contested, and we're here to tell you all about the nations competing, with three interesting facts about each.

#1 Royal Kingdom of Quebec
- They really love marijuana.
- It's really cold there, and it's a popular myth that locals stay warm by smoking large amounts of marijuana. It's not entirely a myth.
- Marijuana is considered part of a person's diet in Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

#2 Allamunnic States
- Fun fact: They've won six World Bowl's.
- Less fun fact: They've beaten San Llera in San Llera's only two World Bowl's.
- More fun fact: No way San Llera's playing this team until the final!

#3 Schottia
- They seem to like the Kraken.
- It is unclear whether the Kraken on their jerseys is meant for intimidation or stylistic purposes.
- Cthulhu vs Kraken is the movie I am going to produce that will get me out of this reporting job.

#4 Thereisnogodistan
- I'm not religious, but sometimes I wonder if I should confess to a priest or something
- I agree that there is no God, but there's some sort of comfort in knowing that there's someone watching over, you know?
- Sometimes I feel depressed and alone, and I really want to believe that God is out there.

#5 San Llera
- But if there is a God, I wonder what he would think about that night in the casino parking lot...
- Hey, I live in this country!
- A reporter once strangled a man in a casino parking lot in San Llera.

#6 Gregoryisgodistan
- Oh God, not these people again.
- This country is insane
- Sometimes I wonder whether I'm join insane. I mean, most sane people don't strangle people in casino parking lots.

#7 Armeia
- My marriage has been in decline for like a decade now.
- I remember when I was young, in love, didn't hate my job, and didn't carry the burden of guilt for murdering someone in a casino parking lot
- Armeia is up-and-coming in football, just like us. I wonder if they're young and in love...

#8 Equestrian States
- Most players on this team are ponies.
- I liked ponies as a child.
- My childhood disappeared that night in the casino parking lot.

#9 Cosumar
- I have a strong reason to believe that Arabella is cheating on me with another man.
- And honestly, I wouldn't blame her.
- Cosumar's assistant head coach is named Phillip Jenkins. I had a friend at the Univeristy named Phillip Jenkins. Oh, I long for those days, free of an unquenchable thirst for murder.

#10 Abanhfleft
- I think about murder every day.
- The past murder, the ones I try not to commit on a day-to-day basis, etc.
- Sometimes I look at people and imagine myself mutilating their corpse.

#11 Ko-oren
- Ko-oren seems like a pleasant place.
- I wonder if I could just go there and make a new life for myself.
- If only I wasn't on so many no-fly lists.

#12 Nassau-Hessen
- This is the team San Llera will be playing.
- We beat them in the group stage, and last Bowl in the Round of 16, so I'm feeling good about the game.
- I barely remembered what it felt like to feel good.

#13 Barunia
- Sometimes I feel like I should get help, but I don't want to be locked up in a mental institute.
- I have moments when I feel normal, just not many.
- Most moments are just spent thinking about murder.

#14 Taeshan
- There are a lot of touch decisions in life.
- Like to murder, or not to murder, my neighbor Jacque.
- Jacque is the most pompous asshole you'll ever meet.

#15 Frenline Delpha
- But then again, I've been taught that murder is wrong.
- But it's just so fun.
- But I always feel guilty afterwards.

#16 United States of Devonta
- Devonta is a Grand Republic and a United States, which is pretty impressive.
- God, my life is just in shambles right now.
- This is the last sentence I will write today.
There are many places, and one such place is Rushmore.

World Bowl Knockout Stage Preview

Here is a preview of the knockout stage of World Bowl XXVIII. Who will win? Who will fall? Let's find out.

Round of 16:

#1 Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. #16 United States of Devonta

This one won't be much of a contest. Quebec is one of the best teams in the Multiverse, and they're the hosts. Devonta just isn't that good and is lucky to have made it this far. The weather will be bitterly cold and very snowy, so look for Quebec to win in a low scoreline. Prediction: Quebec wins 14-7

#8 Equestrian States vs. #9 Cosumar

The ponies used to be the best. Now they're fading from relevance slowly but surely. Meanwhile, Cosumar is rising to power in the sporting Multiverse, and football is no exception. The power of the past against the power of the future. But ponies are stupid and Cosumarites are smart. This should be a fun matchup, but we have to go with Cosumar. Prediction: Cosumar wins 21-16

#4 Thereisnogodistan vs. #13 Barunia

Both of these teams are veterans of Baptisms of Iron hosted by Gregoryisgodistan. Alas, that tournament is no more because it was a stupid tournament that nobody cared about which outlived its usefulness. Thereisnogodistan is heathen trash, but they can play football very well. The Sea Cows are good too, but Thereisnogodistan has some interesting players. Prediction: Thereisnogodistan wins 31-19

#5 San Llera vs. #12 Nassau-Hessen

San Llera is another relative newcomer, while Nassau-Hessen has been here a while but is also starting to fade from relevance. San Llera is a very good team, and they could be one of the surprises of this tournament. Prediction: San Llera wins 21-3

#6 Gregoryisgodistan vs. #11 Ko-oren

And now for the matchup you've all been waiting for - the Grid Slaves against the Dragonflies. Two superb defenses who have combined to allow 28 points this tournament between them. This will be an extreme defensive struggle, and the weather won't help scoring. Look for there to be some crushings, lots of turnovers, and lots of fun, but the Grid Slaves pull it off. They always play well in Quebec. Prediction: Gregoryisgodistan wins 6-3

#3 Schottia vs. #14 Taeshan

Taeshan thinks they're so great, don't they? Well, maybe they once were but nobody in that country can spell properly. It's a shame. We should send their journalists to Grammar Reeducation Camps and Spelling Reeducation Camp. Or maybe just give them the death penalty for being too stupid to live. And they're all ugly too. Taeshan is one of the dumbest countries in the world. Meanwhile, they face Schottia. A team of Greggywubbies could beat the Taeshani national team, so Schottia certainly can. Prediction: Schottia wins 73-0

#7 Armeia vs. #10 Abanhfleft

Armeia has had a good run so far, but their luck is going to run out here. Abanhfleft is just too good, too fast, too strong, and too dominant for Armeia to win. Maybe they'll keep it close, but the Fleftics will pull it off. Predicton: Abanhfleft wins 16-14

#2 Allamunic States vs. #15 Frenline Delpha

One of the biggest mismatches of the knockout stage other than Taeshan against anybody. Frenline Delpha is another newcomer, and they're just not that good yet. Allamunic States is one of the best teams in the Multiverse, perhaps one of the best we've ever seen. And Frenline Delpha has a stupid flag that nobody likes. I'm afraid this won't be close. Prediction: Allamunic States wins 42-6

Quarterfinals:

#1 Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. #9 Cosumar

Quebec faces Cosumar in this opening quarterfinal matchup. The hosts will look to advance to the semifinals, and it would be a surprise if they fail to do so at home. Cosumar is rising, but hasn't risen yet. They will finally stumble at this stage, though they'll keep it close. Prediction: Quebec wins 24-23

#4 Thereisnogodistan vs. #5 San Llera

This is an interesting matchup. Two teams we didn't expect would get that far, but they did, and one of them will move on to the semifinal. Will it be the heathen scum or the sort of heathen scum? Thereisnogodistan is an unusual team, but so is San Llera. We have to go with the higher seed. Prediction: Thereisnogodistan wins 30-28

#3 Schottia vs. #6 Gregoryisgodistan

Another challenge for the Grid Slaves - the bottom of the bracket is definitely tougher than the top. But The Grid Slaves will crush Schottia in more ways than one. This will be close, but there will be injuries, deaths, and ultimately defeat for the Schottians. Prediction: Gregoryisgodistan wins 13-3

#2 Allamunic States vs. #10 Abanhfleft

Sorry Abanhleft. You're a good team with a chance to shock. Just not against Allamunic States. Allamunic States is going to go all the way to the semifinals and face the Grid Slaves in a highly anticipated matchup.

Semifinals:

#1 Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. #4 Thereisnogodistan

Thereisnogodistan has had a great ride by this point, a fun ride, but they're doomed against the Quebbles people. Fruity Quebbles, we call them, but they're good enough to win this. Prediction: Quebec wins 34-23

#2 Allamunic States vs. #6 Gregoryisgodistan

I was going to pick Allamunic States, but some folks in black ski masks and lots of guns showed up at my door and said I should pick Gregoryisgodistan if I wanted to live and wanted my family to live. Grid Slaves win. Prediction: Gregoryisgodistan wins 372-0 because that's what the you-know-who say.

Third Place Game:

It's the third-place game. Who cares? Allamunic, probably. Who cares?

Championship:

#1 Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. #6 Gregoryisgodistan

Quebec looks like the fav - argh! Let go of my throat! No, don't kill my wife, 1 year old daughter, mother, father, and 98 year old grandmother! And don't kill me either! Argh, not the Brownie Cutter of Death! Please no! AAAAAAAAAAAAH THE PAIN! Got to go, Secret Police are killing me and taking my comput

At this point, winning in the Round of Sixteen and moving on to the quarterfinals was an expectation for the Regulars. This was not the year they fell short of that expectation, at least, as the team hammered Frenline Delpha for the single largest margin of victory in the first round of the World Bowl XXVIII playoffs. In point of fact, the score made the game look closer than it actually was; it was well in-hand by the time the starters were pulled halfway through the third quarter, nursing a 32-0 lead.

Although the defense technically conceded its first touchdown of the tournament in that fourth quarter, it hardly mattered, and it was telling that the Delphans only managed it against the Regulars second-string. The doubts of which unit was better was definitively answered when they ended a promising drive intended to follow that first touchdown by snagging an interception and returning it for the touchdown. It could actually be said that the Allamunnic defensive backups scored as many points as the Frenline Delphan starting offense.

Before that, the defense had been even more effective, forcing two safeties (one a stuffed run play on first down after Wyatt Skode had pinned the upstarts against their own goal line, the second caused by a bad snap in the third quarter after Waldr Baersvylk had had a half to terrorize the center. The quarterback had scooped up the ball, but had been flattened by Piotr Farrangur for the two points and turnover. Combined with the touchdown off of a forced fumble, returned by Kyl Waalturs, and the Allamunnic defense as a whole actually outscored the entire opposing team.

Still, at halftime, Vaalburger had told the Regulars to "be blackhearted and step on their throats" as they nursed a 23-0 lead. Sure enough, they had stepped on the Delphan's throats. Metaphorically, of course. There would have been suspensions all around if it had been literal.

It was almost superfluous for the offense to score three times on its own, once on one of Graagur Wyrth's increasingly-common deep touchdown shots, this one to Ella Kaarbrynn on an audible, the other two accounted for on the ground, courtesy of Torren Tormundsunn (who vultured one, and blocked for Bryndyn Traewyk on the other). So, with the game well-in-hand (although leaving the starters dressed, just in case), Baeryk Vaalburger had started rotating starters out, eventually just taking out the entire units, to finish the game and avoid any really crippling injuries for the next round. As it turned out, despite a kick-off return, a big play touchdown, and a field goal allowed, the Regulars' defensive back-ups were more than up to the task, and they were able to leave with a 22-point win over an upstart team.

"That was a good job, guys," Vaalburger told the team after the game. "Way to take care of business, get the win, and avoid any major trip-ups. That's all we really needed tonight, and by gods, you delivered." True to a Gregoryisgodistani journalist's predictions, the Regulars would be facing 10th-seeded Abanhfleft at Pavel Wilson Stadium in Kingston. The Fleftic side had made a return after a plane-crash tragedy had prompted them to stay out of the tournament for the 27th edition. That would, Vaalburger knew, have an impact on just about any program's momentum, but the Fleftic team had managed to bounce back admirably to make the playoffs this time around, and then advance to the quarterfinal.

"We all know who these folks are. It's alright to have sympathy for them and what that program has gone through. It's fucking awful what they got. But remember, we cannot let up on the field. It would be a disservice to both us and them to not give them everything we have. So, I told you tonight, and I'll tell you again: be blackhearted, and step on their throats."

Postby Schottia » Sat Jan 16, 2016 12:03 pm

'Ha! Sixth in the world my ass!' Said Lucas Popescu, as he gave a robust high-five to Gabi Alessi, after her pinpoint pass had found him relatively unmarked in the end zone. It was a crucial move, which late in the final quarter, put the result beyond much doubt. Given the way that Schottia had played in this match it was the breakthrough they needed to make sure they saw this one out.

'This team will never beat us.' Gabi replied through gritted teeth. 'I swear, if I play them one hundred times, they won't get the better of me.' This was the third time Schottia had played Grayson Ashley's side having beaten them twice in their group last year in Cosumar. For such a gentle character off the pitch, Gabi was a real scrapper on it. No matter now many times she was thrown to the floor, she was straight back up again.

The Snow was still falling steadily, as it had been the whole game. Somehow though, the snow and the cold never seemed that bad when you were winning. Mark Tomkins-Brown ambled over to take the conversion; he appeared little phased by the occasion as usual. He was one of those people who never seemed to get ruffled by anything; he was a big gentle ex-rugby player who had been with the squad since their BoI days, and he was almost like a piece of the furniture - you couldn't imagine the team without him. In some ways he was the side's secret weapon, but in other ways he could be replaced with a boot on a stick. He was deadly in his consistency and never missed a kick; the problem came, however, when he was asked to do anything other than kick. It was debatable whether he even knew the rules of Gridiron Football, and no one dared to ask him in case that was indeed the case (ignorance can be bliss). The biggest cheer he had ever received in his career came from the time, when after a kick-off against Gim, one of their players had broken loose. The roar that went up after he made the tackle was louder than you would expect after a touchdown...

Back here in Kingston another roar went up as Mark duly converted, accepting a few modest handshakes (he wasn't one for high-fives) from some of the players on his way off the field.

It was something very special to reach the last eight for the first time, having lost out at this stage for the last two seasons. Perhaps one of the biggest differences was the fact that they didn't have to face Saintland for once. As the ball went out of play for the final time, and the clock ran down, the fans could finally celebrate. Schottia had set up a quarterfinal against Gregoryisgodistan, who had come through a tight match with Ko-oren a little earlier, in the 'battle of the defences.' There was no doubt that they were in the toughest half of the draw, with the Gridslaves, and one would imagine the Allammunic States, standing between them and a final spot. Just to put it into perspective, two of Schottia's best players, Rupert Kenny and Nathan Johnson, played in the reserve league in the AGL. That was the gulf in class they were up against, if they were even able to get that far. The Gridslaves were solid as a rock, and their squad was filled with Enemy Crushers, Pervert Chasers, and all manner of frightening individuals. They had only conceded 18 points in seven games, and given that Schottia relied so heavily upon their offence, this didn't bode well. Looking down their roster, it would have been easy for Lewis Patterson to see that they were giving away a fair bit in height and weight.

The only possible course of action for Schottia would be to hope they could break down the defence, and score more that they conceded. Having scored more than double the amount of points as their opponents in this tournament so far, there was perhaps chance for an upset. The key mission was going to be protecting Alessi at quarterback, and there were already doubts in the coach's mind as to whether that was even possible. Speed, quick deliveries, and getting the ball up the field at pace, that was realistically the only way to do it. His side definitely had the legs to take the fight to them, and the likes of Lucas Popescu, and Nick Lovelle, (a player he was considering throwing into the mix) maybe even had the edge in a footrace. Rupert Kenny would need to be at his best too, and Patterson expected he was the only player who could really go toe-to-toe with them. Whatever happened, he knew they were going to come out of this with a few scrapes and bruises; but perhaps there was the faintest chance that sending Taeshan to the spelling school in the sky in their last game might have earned them a little respect.

In their first seven games at World Bowl XXVIII The Grid Slaves conceded a total of 18 points; making the 20 that Schottia put past them in their quarterfinal something of a surprise. Perhaps there is something fitting about dispatching of your Baptism of Iron hosts, to reach the last four for the first time, and the thing is, this is a very different Schottia. Gone are the clumsy tactics which saw them throw away leads in previous years, and gone are the days of being here to make up the numbers. They will now go into their semi-final match with six times reining world champions the Allamunnic States as rank outsiders, but with renewed belief that they can give them a good match.

The game with Gregoryisgodistan had all the makings of an interesting encounter, with one of the tournament's best offences going up against one of the best defences. Keeping the Gridslaves' defence quiet was going to be important as they were the side's main source of goals, but Schottia would have been encouraged to hear that the opposition offence was far from as effective. That said, it was going to be an up hill struggle from start to finish and the Schottic players knew that breaking down the Gregoryisgodistan defence was going to be like trying to run through a concrete wall.

In the end however, Schottia shocked probably even themselves as they managed to safely preserve a 12 point lead, with the offence line putting in a fantastic performance. There were huge question marks over young quarterback Gabriella Alessi, who the team really needed to deliver. Despite the 23-year-old's relative inexperience, she was undaunted by facing a defensive tackle line of giant enemy crushers, and put in one of her best performances to date. When the North Coast Sirens player is in this kind of form she is almost impossible to track, as we have seen already in some of Schottia's key matches. Her pace and accurate throwing were so important in keeping the pressure off of the Schottic side. In the end it was Alessi's darting run, spotting an opening, which allowed her to pick out Jack Stewart for the sides winning touchdown; no doubt a memorable moment for both young players.

'Were you worried about me out there?' Gabi asked her partner Steven, after deciding to step out side of the dressing room and give him a call. There was huge commotion as the team celebrated the victory, and she felt that she need to take five minutes out.

'Eh... no!' It was too late he hesitated. 'I knew you could give a good account of yourself out there.' If truth be told Steven McAllister hadn't even watched the game. Instead he had kept the TV on another channel and had, at random intervals, flicked quickly back to the game to check the score. He was not exactly what you would call a fan of contact sport. Last season when Gabi had broken her collarbone in a league match, he had fainted in his seat and had to be treated by the stadium's first aid team. No; he was happy with is nine to five computer programming job thank - you - very - much!

'Alright then, so how did you think I played?' She was going to enjoy tormenting him now. 'How awesome, was your awesomely talented and awesomely beautiful girlfriend?' She had known before she had even called him that he wouldn't have watched the game, this was just a bit of fun. Steven hated all sports. All of them. Anything which involved a ball, or running, or throwing, or jumping - he avoided them like the plague. In fact when they walked through the park he always made Gabi walk on the side nearest and ball games, in case the ball accidently rolled their way, and he had to kick it back.

'Yeah.' He replied before a pause. 'Yeah you played really well. I, eh, liked that thing you did with the, eh, I mean when you had to...' {insert much tutting and sighing} 'When the ball broke loose and you pulled off that good lob, to your teammate, the one with brown hair. That was the best thing you did.' That had to be vague enough to be plausible.

'Thanks, mhm, that was a hard loose-ball-gather-lob to pull off.' She lulled him into a false sense of security. 'Did you think that was even better than the touchdown I scored?'

'Oh, eh, well now that you mention it, that was a really good one, maybe the best I've seen. I would say it was actually equal with the loose-ball-garden-log? What's it called?'

'A loose-ball-gather-lob.' Gabi answered trying not to burst with laughter, how could he have thought that was even a thing! 'Or would you have said it was more of a jump-hop-sprint-spin-pass?' She was surprised he had kept this going so long already. 'And just so you know Steven, I didn't score a touchdown.

'Okay Gabi...' He took a deep breath; he was the worst boyfriend ever. Time to come clean. 'I have something say, and it's not going to be easy...'

'The answer is yes!'

'Wait... what?'

'I'll marry you?' She really had to stop winding him up but it was too easy. 'I thought you were never going to ask.'

'Goodness I eh, shit argh. No I mean, it's not like I don't want to... I just, eh...'

'Steven!' She stopped him mid splutter. 'I'm just winding you up. And I know you didn't watch the match, tis cool, I know you don't like contact sport.... or any sport for that matter.'

'I am sorry Gabi, I really wanted to watch it.' He took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes. 'You know what I'm like though with violence, I hate the though of you getting hurt. I took one look at those Enemy Crushers and I just about got a nosebleed.'

'I completely understand Steven please don't worry. And if you weren't so easy to wind up all the time I wouldn't do it. So try to work on that.'

There was a sense of relief spreading through his veins like a drug. 'Don't let you wind me up. Got it! And seriously though Gabi, I'll never understand why you want to play a sport like that, I think you must be off you head... But well done, I mean that, I'm really proud of you.'

'Thanks Steven.' Gabi smiled and prepared to head back into the dressing room, but there was time for one more parting shot. 'You support me in your own way and that means a lot to me. I'll be home next week, then we can go and pick out a ring! Love yoooooooou!'

She really had to stop winding the poor guy up...

Semifinals Cutoff

Oh babe, let me get into my zone.

Royal Kingdom of Quebec 13–15 Thereisnogodistan (Scorinated by Electrum)
Allamunnic States 17–24 Schottia@ Imperial Copper Stadium, Rouyn-Noranda. Kickoff @ 1:30 after the referee and both linesmen, on their pre-game meal, accidentally ate too much of high-THC weed brownies off Valladar strain, causing their intoxication when entering the field. They were hospitalised few hours later, causing the activation of replacement referee whose wife happened to be an MMA artist.

This was getting terrifying. The entire situation had just jet-rocketed into the stratosphere, compared to where it had been four year ago. The players weren't used to this kind of attention and their coach Lewis Patterson certainly wasn't. A deal between SBC and Quebec had been struck to screen some matches this year, and the game with Taeshan had even been moved forward to a primetime spot, but the viewing figures were still relatively small. Now subsequent wins against Gregoryisgodistan and The Allamunnic States had seen the small murmur of noise increase exponentially to near fever pitch.

In a little over five days, news of the teams exploits had gone from occupying half a page somewhere just before the horseracing results, to banner headlines in the front pages of all the national newspapers. Journalists back home had scrambled to read up on the sport, to write introductory biographies for the players, and to see if they could get tickets for the final of World Bowl XXVIII.

Talk was starting to creep into the pubs and workingmen's clubs. Rumour and speculation was the topic of lunch hours and coffee breaks. School play grounds were a buzz with young children carrying ruby balls, pretending to know the rules of Gridiron Football. It didn't matter where you went, someone somewhere in Schottia was talking about how the tiny nation from Tyran was about to compete in one of the biggest events in the sporting multiverse.

From the player's perspective however, things seemed a little different, and shock had well and truly set in. They had already had three finals in many ways. Taeshan, The Gridslaves, and now The Allamunnic States. There had been a party after they cruised into the quarterfinal for the first time. There had been utter ecstasy as they battled their way to the semis. And as they wriggled past The Regulars (a team which most of the players had supported growing up) the team were at a loss as to how they could process this. To pick themselves up now after playing the 5th, 3rd, and 1st ranked teams in the tournament was going to be a tall order, but somehow they had to do it.

'This is your chance!' Lewis Patterson said to the players as they prepared to head out and face the Thereisnogodistan. 'I know we've come through some tough matches to get here, but this is your chance. Lots of great sides never reach the final, if you don't push yourselves it might be something that you regret for the rest of your careers. Think what we've all been through. Freezing conditions, delays, referees collapsing, partying in the car park because we got snowed in. Getting up at three in the morning, a referee's wife who could kick all of our asses, and look, we are all still standing. So come on, let go out and give a good account of ourselves. Remember, if you put in a good performance out there, it's your big chance, a lot of people are going to be watching.'

The game had gone back and forth all day. If there had been a match thus far in the tournament where the Regulars found themselves evenly matched with an opponent, it was with the Leviathans of Schottia. Lewis Patterson's squad was clearly determined to give them everything they had. If they were not quite a physical match in terms of size and power, they were at least equal, possibly more, in terms of speed and skill.

The scoring had started with the Schottians taking the early lead off of a big run by Lucas Popescu, who had slipped a tackle on the edge by Olaf Rynnur before turning on the jets and bolting downfield. He had made it into the endzone right as safety Mikel Ulryk had tackled him, and the following PAT had been good.

The Regulars had nearly answered on the next drive with a touchdown, with a long run by Ella Kaarbrynn in response was called back on a holding call. Still, Graagur Wyrth, Godwyn Braanur, Torren Tormundsunn, and Kaarbrynn managed to push the team into field goal range, and halfway through the first quarter, Kaarl Hunt booted a 32-yard field goal to tighten the score to 7-3.

Of course, then, the Allamunnic defense had flexed its muscles. After denying Popescu on a first down run, and tripping up Gabriella Alessi on a read-option before she could get the ball out, the Regulars forced a passing attempt on third down. Patterson dialed up a slant in an attempt to simply get the next set of downs before trying anything more ambitious, and that proved to be a mistake. Recognizing the route in its early stages, Allamunnic cornerback Rikard Junnsunn had jumped Jack Stewart's route and caught Alessi's pass neatly in stride, running back to the Schottic end zone untouched for the score. Hunt's PAT gave the Regulars a 10-7 lead.

The scrappy Schottian defense managed to give the Regulars fits for the rest of the half, and they never were able to get back in field goal range for that half. Perhaps it was simply good coaching, perhaps experience playing alongside or practicing with the Allamunnae showed, but the Schottian defense featured quite possibly the best tackling the Regulars faced the entire tournament, and it showed; plays were Allamunnic receivers or tailbacks might have slipped by or escaped ended in solid wrap-ups that kept them from breaking any huge plays.

Mercifully, the Allamunnic defense came to play as well. Junnsunn's pick-six galvanized them after Popescu's early run, and Alessi threw a second interception, while absorbing three sacks over the half. The combination of size and athleticism from the Allamunnic line was hard to overcome, and they did not even gain 30 total yards in the second quarter.

The Regulars got the opening kickoff of the second half, and the tone for that half was set fairly quickly. After being remarkably efficient and safe with the ball for the entire tournament, Graagur Wyrth finally was hit as he threw by Nathan Johnson on a blitz, leaving the pass to sail errant into the waiting arms of Archie Scott. Mercifully, Scott was tackled before he could take the ball back for the score, but the damage was done.

With the momentum on their side, the Leviathans were able to roll down the field, using a quick passing game to get the Regulars' defense off-balance (and then keep them that way), breaking off gains of six or seven yards at a time on most plays. Two minutes later, Alessi hit David Cowden in the endzone for a touchdown, taking back the lead 14-10.

The Regulars were not able to do much of anything on the next drive, nor were the Schottians, and the teams traded punts. However, as the third quarter wound to a close, the Regulars were driving in a still very close game, having pushed the ball out to midfield as the quarter ended. True to Allamunnic smashmouth form, they drove the ball down the field a few yards at a time, and it was nearly four minutes into the fourth quarter when Torren Tormundsunn plowed into the end zone on a fullback dive to give the Regulars the lead, 17-14 after the PAT.

A pity, then, that on the next play, Jack Stoitkov managed to run back the kickoff to the Allamunnic 31. A good stand by the Regulars' defense meant that the Shottians only gained one first down before being stuffed on three consecutive downs at the Allamunnic 18. Still, that was in easy field goal range, and sure enough, Mark Tomkins-Brown knocked in the 35-yarder to tie the game up, 17-17.

The teams both suffered three-and-outs on their ensuing drives, bringing the game ever-closer to the two minute warning. The Regulars found themselves forced to punt again on the next drive, playing on their heels against the fast, skilled Leviathans, hoping to simply make it to overtime if they did not get a good break. And then, it looked like they had forced their opponents to do the same, as the clock hit two minutes as they lined up to punt.

Getting the extra clock stoppage, Patterson seemed to decide now was the time for a gambit. The team went back out, lined up to punt. And then, snapped it to one of the blockers for the punter, running back Nick Lovelle, who bolted forward, picked up a block, and managed to eke out the three yards necessary for the first down. That almost seemed to take the air out of a lot of the Regulars; in a close game, such a fake punt attempt at one's own 30 was downright insane.

Still, the defense did its job, once again pushing the Schottians to fourth down, this time closer to midfield. The die had been cast, though, and Patterson dialed up a deep passing play. Alessi took the snap, dropped, and looked for an open target. Downfield, Nail Cornor was the most open, but even he was locked in tight against Rikard Junnsunn. While she was still looking downfield, suddenly her field of vision was obscured by blue, and Piotr Farrangur appeared to essentially bearhug her. Desperate to avoid the sack (or losing the ball at midfield), Alessi heaved the ball downfield in Cornor's direction as she was taken down.

It had the distance. She even had roughly the right placement. But it was Rikard Junnsunn who jumped up and snagged it over his head. Until the ball slipped through his hands, seemingly destined to fall incomplete out the back of the end zone. And it would have, were it not for Nail Cornor's right arm reaching out, catching the ball by his fingertips, and pinning the pigskin against his helmet as he fell on his back, the ball just barely inside the boundary line.

The referees signaled the touchdown. The green sideline erupted in cheers, and any interested observer could see resigned sighs on the blue sideline. There were only about twelve seconds left in the game after the PAT. They would have to make them count.

And, never to let it be said that he was too conservative, Vaalburger pulled out the stops. Taking the field at their own 20 after the touchback, Wyrth tossed the ball out to the right, to Kaarbrynn, who streaked upfield about eight yards before being tackled. She lobbed the ball back as she fell, into the hands of Godwyn Braanur, who kept galloping upfield another nine. He was tackled, and tossed the ball back to Torren Tormundsunn, who did the same.

They were only six yards out from the end zone when Emma Kaarlsunn was hit, forcing her to toss the ball back. Tormundsunn had picked himself back up and had been right behind her, and he caught it. With Nathan Johnson already wrapping him up, he dove forward, stretching the ball towards the boundary to the end zone, time expired.

He hit the ground, and the referee raised their arms. Touchdown.

But almost immediately, a review was called for. Had Tormundsunn actually reached the endzone? It was dicey, very, very close. The referees went under the hood to view the replay from as many angles as possible. It seemed to drag on for hours as they tried to determine if the regulars would have the chance to tie the game on the PAT.

The head referee stepped back out. "After further review..."

The fans in blue and gray held their breath. Fifty-five players and a dozen coaches waited anxiously on one sideline, and a sizable number on the other did as well.

"The ruling on the field has been overturned. Allamunnic first-and-goal at the Schottian one-yard line. However, during play, time expired. The game is over."

A collective groan rose from about half of the stadium and the Allamunnic sideline. Losing this way was excruciating. To be so close to another final and then fall at the last moment... having victory wrenched away like that was about as painful an outcome as possible. Still, none of the Regulars dropped their eyes, or pouted, or sulked. There was plenty of pride, there. They had played as well as they could, and nearly come out on top. But today, their opponents had been better, and there was no shame in that.

There was even more than a little familiarity. Several Regulars and Leviathans players had struck up friendships, of sorts, when the teams had practiced together, years ago, among the players still on both rosters. There were hugs, friendly handshakes, and amiable chatter when the teams met in the middle of the field with the game decided. Baeryk Vaalburger even gave Lewis Patterson a hug, congratulating him for a job well done, their familiarity born from Vaalburger's first coaching job and Patterson's days as a quarterback on Leifspurt College's gridiron team.

"Well done, you dog," Baeryk told him. "I don't think any of us saw that fake-punt coming. And Alessi's pass... that catch..." He looked appreciatively around at the Leviathans mingling with the Regulars. "You've got an elite bunch, here. Proud to see what you've done for the sport in Schottia," he said. "This team's got grit."

"Thanks," Patterson said, "But the plays don't really mean much if they don't execute. That's all on them. You're right. This is an elite group. I'm glad to have them here, that they've let me help them get here," he said. "And thanks for giving them a stiff test. I think they're going to need that grit, I think. Championships don't win themselves," he said.

"Ain't that the truth?" Vaalburger said. "Well, best of luck. We'll be pulling for you guys. Not the least because we look better if we lost to the champs," he said, grinning, his tone playful.

And with that, they separated, and the teams returned to the locker rooms, to celebrate, commiserate, and face the bright lights. One would be facing Thereisnogodistan in the Championship game, with all the marbles on the line. The other would just have to content themselves with a shot at yet another top-three finish against the Quebecois hosts.

My name is Kelly Erasma Ramoncita Profit.

You know me. You know my name. I am the first woman to ever play for a gridiron football team in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft. And I am proud of it.

It was a fact, at least in Abanhfleft, that women, while they are equal to men in many, if not all, regards, they were simply not meant to play American football. Girls can be fans of football teams all they like: they can cheer for them, roar as loudly as a crowd whenever someone scores a touchdown, but never have they been or will ever be a member of the team itself. Not anywhere near wherever a big burly guy all kitted up in armor, padding and helmet could possibly get to them and tackle them.

So it was with great surprise that we saw female players in the national gridiron teams of the nations that we've come up against in the World Bowl, back when there was only one Abanhfleft team, back before the establishment of Thereisnogodistan County, back before the disaster at Electrum...

I'll be honest today and say that I'm not the best quarterback there ever is or ever will be. In fact, I'm so damn average, I know I'm right in the middle of stats tables of all the quarterbacks that there ever was or ever will be. It just so happened that Thereisnogodistan has a small college that happened to have an equally small American football program that had little interest from many of the folk living near the college, and that I was the cousin of the only real quarterback that this college team had, and that I happened to be a good gridiron player for what it's worth, that I became a part of the Atheists' team, one of the few college teams to ever participate on an international-level tournament like the World Bowl.

And now here we are. We took the group stage by storm; six wins out of six games. There were two very memorable games in that set of six, both for different reasons. The game against Ko-oren, the one we played in freezing conditions during the cold, cold Quebecois midnight, and the one where the only points that were scored came from a very lucky field goal by our Oontaznik kicker Yusuf Khumaira, was memorable because that was the point where we finally proved, both to ourselves and to the world, that we were not just a mere joke team, that we were serious and we were seriously gunning for the World Bowl trophy. The game against Shytysle, that 65-10 murder and thrashing of a respectable side, was memorable because that was the first game in which I threw for nine touchdowns. Nine touchdowns! Even in the bitter cold, I had to take off my sleeves and pinch myself in the arm because I knew that it couldn't possibly be real. No one ever threw nine touchdowns in a single game! And yet I did. It was a strange feeling that coursed through my veins once I had realized that it was reality, and I had made history.

My other memories of that game against Shytysle was when I somehow managed to shrug off that tackle from that armless guy and prevent my getting sacked in that game, which would've tarnished my memories of that game a little, I'll admit. But that's far from the point now, isn't it?

Now we're in the final, against Schottia, who managed to triumph over gazillion-times champion Allamunnic States after that last-minute Hail-Mary play got them a touchdown when they were so far away from the endzone that no one thought that they could do it. And here we are, also having managed to scrape past a feisty Quebec side over which we triumphed thanks to a very lucky safety from the ever-dependable Rey Kang on Quebec's Trenton Hyun, just as the QB was cocking back for a pass. Those two points turned out to be the difference that would get us through to the World Bowl Final, a place that no one on the team ever imagined they would see, at least not within their playing careers. I knew that I wouldn't see the Final from the player's perspective when I joined up with the team, and yet here we all are now.

In the tale of the World Bowl XXVIII semifinals, Schottia and Thereisnogodistan were the Davids to Quebec and Allamunnic States' Goliaths. And just like David, both of those teams found that one stone to sling into the foreheads of their Goliaths, and now we were face to face in the biggest gridiron stage of them all. Now comes the question: who is the David among us, and who the Goliath? Or should the question be, if one team is David, is the other team Saul, the king who tried to fight the young shepherd who was anointed by the prophets over him and failed? Or will the other team be Bathsheba, luring the David into a false sense of security before striking at the right moment and causing the David to sin and make mistakes?

Yeah, I wasn't really one for making analogies, and why are you looking at me that way? Just because I'm from a place called Thereisnogodistan doesn't mean I believe that there is no god, God or higher being. Thereisnogodistan is part of the Fhulghamous Peninsula colony after all, and the Fhulghamous Peninsula is a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft, which is known for its acceptance of all religions, and those who profess to have no religion. And while I may not be as devout as other members of my family when it comes to being a Catholic, I do still pray for victory in my games, and especially in this coming World Bowl.

The question remains, though. Is Schottia the David that will be brought down by Thereisnogodistan's Bathsheba, or is Thereisnogodistan the David to Schottia's Bathsheba? I guess we'll just have to find out on a cold snowy night in Iqaluit.

Final Cutoff of this Bowl. Woo!

Alright, guys. Show your true colours for the final showdown.

Schottia 26–25 Thereisnogodistan @ Iqaluit Stadium, Iqaluit. Kickoff @ 1:30 a.m. (original kickoff time: 11:11 p.m.) because the pre-game show by the very band who requested the 11:11 p.m. kickoff time the last time decided to extend its setlist to a full-on 2 hour concert combined with series of orgies here and there by fans who then stormed the field after 5th minute into the concert. Shortly after the final whistle rang, 1,093 tons of fireworks were blasted into the sky and tens of thousands of fans stormed into the field as the Schottians celebrated the victory.

Thank you all for a wonderful tournament in spite of personal crises the person behind this account had to go through. Congratulations to the winner, Consolations to the loser and good night!

SBCNEWS Online...
Sports special

As Schottia's World Bowl title win was watched by the kind of audience numbers normally reserved for the nation's soccer team, we ask the question: Has the sport in this country turned a corner?

The temperatures hit minus 20° at the Iqaluit Stadium in Quebec, but it could do nothing to dampen the atmosphere, as Schottia held off a tough challenge from underdogs Thereisnogodistan to lift the title. It must have been a strange feeling for the Schottic players to go into the final as favourites, having had to scrape their way past the 6th, 3rd, and 1st ranks sides in the world. Schottia's match against the small side from the Fhulghamous Peninsulan county will not go down as the biggest game in the history of the sport by any means, but in terms of a nail biting final it did not fail to deliver. Schottia in the end, held their nerve winning by a single goal margin, in a match where the lead changed hands several times. There is little doubt that the third place play-off was the match most neutrals would have wanted to see as the final, with reigning champions The Allamunnic States, losing to the hosts Quebec. That said, the final was no forgone conclusion, and despite coming through their group with a 100% record and being ranked 8th in the world, Schottia knew they could not be complacent. It remains to be seen whether the outcome of the tournament will go down as a freak result; or if it was the beginnings of a tectonic shift, where we may start to see some of the smaller sides able to hold their own against the traditional heavyweights.

Schottia's offensive team had been on top form right the way through the tournament, and again they had to rely upon the likes of Gabriella Alessi and David Cowden to come up with the performances they needed to get them over the line. Again however, it was the Mark Tomkins-Brown and his kicking, which proved to be so crucial when looking the final score. With the score line so close for most of the match, it was clear to see that the Schottic side were nervous, and perhaps a little burnt out. Despite this Lewis Patterson's boys and girls stuck to their task, and endured the weather conditions, to bring a major sporting trophy to shores of Tyran for the first time.

The fans and players were treated to quite a spectacle from their Quebecois hosts, which more than made up for the up for the weather; and the Schottia fans were left celebrating long into the night. Tomorrow morning the team will fly back to Schottia, and no doubt, to a hero's welcome, with hundereds of fans expected to line the streets. An event has been planned for the weekend, where the team will parade the trophy, and head coach Lewis Patterson will also meet with High Council Leader Amy Connell. For most of the players, however, it will be back to their day jobs, as those involved with the SGL will be on domestic duties again the following week.
