Lieutenant Al-Hamdi smiled. "I see. I understand our Sviatogor class bulk cruisers have similar defences, since they're dedicated armed transports designed for carrying large numbers of ex-slaves and counter-slaver marine units. Most of our ships are less concerned with boarding actions and they just hand out guns and body armour to the crew while the senior staff are laying scuttling charges. The threat to us is being blown out of the water by a Scandinvan or Parthian or Kraven attack submarine carrying a load of supercavitating torpedoes, and then, we see a lot of sailors taking their own lives if a rescue ship isn't nearby rather than end up enslaved."

Satisfied the vessel was not carrying slaves, yet unaware of any prior diplomatic contact between Kahanistan and Esalonia, she felt she had to choose her words carefully in dealing with the captain. "The Kahanistanian Defence Forces are doing the same. The drones you saw scouting your ship are also carrying supplies to Neadresgad. We saw a small unflagged ship near the waters of a slaver nation with which we have been on the brink of open war for years. Having had huge numbers of our people enslaved in the Doomani Wars... many of whom ended up getting sold throughout Doomani trade routes to the Scandinvans and the Parthians and the Ralkovians. Not sure about Kraven, I don't think even the Doomies would stoop that low, but the point is any random slaver vessel out here has a reasonably high chance of carrying some of our citizens at any moment. I'm not sure of your government's foreign policy, but it seems like at least against the slaver, we are allies. Since we have similar interests in the island, if it's acceptable to my captain and the Kahanistanian Admiralty, I'd like to propose a joint operation in Neadresgad."

"It's so saddening to hear about sailors taking their own lives just so that they won't get enslaved, as well as your ugly fate in the past. If these mentioned nations would burn in flames then I'm cooking a few s'mores over their flames. I have always loved s'mores cooked by burning slavers. Tastes like freedom." Captain Hallado joked while raising his eyebrows for a quick amount of time, seemingly trying to uplift the sad mood onboard the UCS Civil Hands, especially on the bridge, where they ended up-alone. "It's so good to know these big slaver countries are not going on with their business unharmed. Slavery must stop. There is no slave race or slave caste, just a despicable slaver. We're working under the auspices of the Lance Doctrine, which is highly anti-communist, anti-socialist, and anti-slavery."

"Captain, we're 1,000 meters away from territorial waters of the Scandinvans!" an ensign on the steering wheel shouted. "Make a hard right, ensign! Now!" Captain Hallado impulsively replied, his instinct telling him to do so. "I hope you know-" the ensign was about to say that if they entire Scandinvan territorial waters they'd basically singlehandedly invade the Scandinvans. "NOW!" Captain Hallado shouted, seemingly to enforce his order so that no untoward incident would happen. The ensign quickly turned the steering wheel right, since the ship was going diagonally relative to the border of the Scandinvan territorial waters. Suddenly the weight of the ship leaned, with most personnel leaning towards the right side of the ship. Captain Hallado and Lt. Al-Hamdi were swept off their feet, with the Al-Hamdi falling upon Captain Hallado with their faces looking at each other. "Come on, Mallari, I can see water reaching my feet!" a marine onboard radioed, as his burly arms held on to the railings of the ship's main deck.

Meanwhile on the bridge both Lt. Al Hamdi and Captain Hallado were holding on to each other, sliding downward as they were pulled by gravity towards a wall. Captain Hallado bumped the wall, taking much of the force that could have gravely injured Lt. Al Hamdi. Luckily his body armor and helmet took much of the blunt trauma. "Territorial waters, 400 meters out!" Ensign Mallari still won't stop steering hard. Finally the ship was already moving away from territorial waters, and Ensign Mallari righted the ship with a hard left rudder. Lt. Al Hamdi would be alright, but Captain Hallado was not feeling good. When Lt. Al Hamdi would speak to him he would hear it like it was an echo near him. His ears were ringing, his eyes a bit blurry, his back hurting, his legs nowhere to be felt, his hands reaching out for traction. Captain Hallado was not looking good.

Al Hamdi struggled to her feet. She felt like she'd just been trampled by a horse, but wasn't in serious pain. The Captain looked like he was more seriously injured, she couldn't tell how badly. She extended her arms to try to steady him.

"Can you stand up?" she asked him. When he failed to feel his legs, she suspected a lower spinal injury that, if untreated, might leave him a paraplegic.

"If you can't, I need you to lie down," she said urgently. "You may have a spinal cord injury. I'd have sick bay look you over. I should probably be checked out for internal injuries myself. My medics can get us there if you can tell them the way."

"I hope we didn't just cross into Imperial waters, it'll be hard to explain having a KDF boarding crew onboard and somehow I think just telling them the truth would lead them to demand that you hand us over to the Empire. I could probably request support from the ship, maybe even another Kahanistanian warship, but we don't have a lot of vessels this close to the Empire. Most of our forces in Gothic waters are keeping Kraven bogged down in Milograd, on the other side of Gholgoth from the Empire."

---

RKS Yggdrasil

Captain Franklin Epstein noted on his ship's instruments that the foreign vessel where he had just deposited his boarding party had just moved dangerously close to Imperial territorial waters. The captain was concerned that his boarding party had been captured or killed. Aware of the grave dangers facing counter-slaver boarder units and fearing perfidy, he hailed the Civil Hands.

"This is Captain Franklin Epstein of RKS Yggdrasil. Requesting contact with our boarding teams. Do you intend to take them into Imperial waters?"

"Casualty in the bridge. Repeat, casualty in the bridge. All medical teams respond immediately." this was the message blaring across the vessel as medical teams were being called to save Captain Hallado and what remained of his senses and working parts. Captain Hallado was not feeling good at all-his legs were nowhere to be felt.

"We've got medics, as well as newly arrived reinforcements from my native country's navy. Included is a hospital ship, and they're going to not do my same mistake. Not to mention this fuck-large vessel having a first-aid medical suite. That would be enough for both of us, right?"

Finally the medics came, wearing facial masks and paramedic uniform, and they arrived with a stretcher. They lift Hallado up, careful not to bend him in any way, and placed him on the stretcher. He was then wheeled to the medical sector of the ship, where he would be treated for his injuries before being sent to the hospital ship, which had a more complete medical suite. He would then have an MRI scan of his entire body taken.

Medical Suite

When Lt. Al Hamdi would ask the combat doctor how Captain Hallado was, all that she got was frightening news. "The MRI scans reveal that his head had been subjected to concussion, and he has an injury on his lower spine, which, if left untreated, can paralyze the lower half of his body, rendering him unable to walk. If either is left untreated he'd be out of service. He needs to be transferred to a nearby hospital ship."

"How soon can the ship get here?" asked the lieutenant. She was beginning to wonder how many more casualties there were going to be when her XO, Ensign Maximus "Max" Rawlins, appeared on the shoulders of a fellow marine in a fire carry, his leg apparently broken.

"I was coming out of the head when the ship did that hard turn," he muttered through gritted teeth. "Tripped and got thrown back into a toilet. Body armour probably kept it from becoming a protrusion fracture, but I can't stand on it. I needed to talk to you anyway, about what to do if the ship does cross into hostile waters."

"Just hold your ground," replied Al-Hamdi. "I think the crew is friendly, but that doesn't mean that they won't comply with a demand to hand us over rather than be sunk. Until that happens they're our allies against the slavers. I just hope that when we do engage the Scandinvans, it's on our terms and that we don't get drawn into an accidental invasion. We have to get these arms to Neadresgad somehow. Trouble is, we don't have any eyes on the ground there yet, and if we'd lost any drones over this ship we'd be at even more of a disadvantage."

As the XO was laid down on an empty gurney, he nodded in response. "We only have fifty drones on the Yggdrasil. Speaking of, if we're really so close to Imperial waters we had to make such a crazy turn, they've probably hailed this ship for a status check. They don't want to go into Imperial waters if they don't have to, and if it looks like we've been captured they'll probably call for another warship and maybe engage the ship with drone strikes. Like you said, if we lose any drones, that will impair our ability to drop arms to the rebels without taking our ships into Imperial territorial waters. We will need drones to bolster our satellite intelligence in that area before we even know we're dropping arms to slaves and not providing the Sons of Erid with the tools to stage a false flag attack with our weapons against one of our allies."

"So it's important that we contact our ship," said Al-Hamdi. "I'm still not sure I won't need to be checked out for internal injuries. I fell on top of the captain and probably fucked up his back. Armour works weird sometimes, it might keep you from shattering a bone but it might also be an extra thirty kilos or so more extra mass making a fall harder.

The Yggdrasil repeated its hail requesting contact with the boarding team and assurance they were not to be taken into Imperial waters.

UCS Civil Hands

"We'll take him via helicopter. We'll even have to use a VTOL if helicopter can't reach far or can't reach fast enough." the medical officer said. In the meantime, a VTOL landed outside, with a roundel of the United Commonwealth Medical Corps-Air Arm. After Captain Hallado was treated with initial first aid to keep the injury from getting worse, he was loaded onto the VTOL that managed to fit on the vessel's landing pad. The sooner the gravely-wounded were loaded, the medical VTOL flew away. Those who can do with the medical suite's treatment were to remain inside, while those who needed more intensive care would be taken to a nearby hospital ship.

The medical suite was filled with personnel who had one injury or another. Some had their teeth blown out of their mouths. Others bit their tongues off. Others had gruesome wounds that looked like a bite from a four-lipped alien. A few were impaled with WTF objects in WTF places. Their vital ABCs were checked. Then the proper course of treatment was done on them.

Meanwhile on the bridge, Captain Hallado was replaced by his next senior officer, the executive officer of the ship. "Captain Epstein this is Lieutenant Commander Vaughn Capil of the UCS Civil Hands. We're currently moving away from Imperial waters, and we are about 50 kilometers away. The crew and the boarding party are safe. No slaver attacks, but the ship's security force is in maximum alertness and accompanying naval forces are in maximum alertness as well." LCDR Capil radioed, still pressing a pack of tube ice on his head.

50 km from Imperial waters
UCS Gilas Macaraeg
Raze-class destroyer

Cutting through the international waters just shy of 50 km from Imperial EEZ was the new and up-to-date might of the Esalonian navy, a Raze-class destroyer fresh from dry dock. She boasted two 155-mm rapid-fire ETC guns with guided rounds, as well as 96 VLS cells. Her two 59-mm guns were able to defend against missiles, as well as the venerable "Parry" CIWS that would pop out from their chambers when an incoming missile is detected.

"UCS Civil Hands just got dangerously near Imperial waters and did a hard turn. Many are injured onboard that ship and drone supply routines for the day are disrupted. That could mean the supply won't be constant so we're gonna have to do..." the Captain of the ship said, still thinking about what to do to patch up the supply hole, his index finger and thumb massaging his chin, his other hand on the table. "This is very risky and can get our name implicated but we need to transport supplies using manned helicopters." the XO replied. "That's a nincompoop idea that can make us all slaves. Are you sure you'd be safe after kicking the hornet's nest?" "Trust me. Roundels are gonna be erased, pilots will not be wearing the patch of any Esalonian military unit. Furthermore they would trace themselves to fictitious mercenary corporations based all around the world, which the government has made and is funding using government waste money." "You dirty, cheating, sneaky..." Captain said while trying to hold in a feeling of both admiration and anger. "It's a rough world, captain. It's a rough world." "I like it actually."

The decision was passed up to the highest possible tier of command for re-checking. They can't go wrong in this. One wrong move and the United Commonwealth's name would be in the hunting list of the Glorious Empire. That would mean Esalonia is fucked, despite raising a large military with up-to-date weaponry.

Aboard the Yggdrasil, Captain Epstein conferred with his executive officer, Commander Rivka Klebitz. Commander Klebitz was a product of the Second Doomani War; an academy student at the time who had been pulled into service virtually when the war was already lost, then pushed into responsibilities well above her level of training when so much of the military leadership was wiped out, and succeeded well enough to be formally promoted. At twenty-six she was significantly younger than commanders in many navies, and filled with a passionate hatred of slavers and a deep mistrust and paranoia. Like many Doomani War veterans, much of her family had been enslaved during the war.

"I don't trust them. If that ship crosses into Imperial waters with our boarding units aboard, our forces are nothing more than bargaining chips to keep their crew from being enslaved or sunk. I can't sit here and do nothing. They tell us our crews are safe, do you really expect them to tell us, 'No, we're selling your prisoners to the Doomies as gladiators, or to the Parthians as test subjects, or to the Scandinvans as sex slaves, or possibly worse, eunuchs, or to the Ralkovians as plutonium miners, or to Kraven to be sent to the factories till they can no longer work and then turned into Soylent Green' if that was their intention?"

"If they intended our boarding parties any harm, we would have gotten a distress call to send in the helicopter," replied Captain Epstein.

"If the ship used a surprise attack, baited them with knockout gas or explosive gas..."

"An explosion of that magnitude would damage the ship. We can take a peek with the drones, and then, if we don't see the boarders are OK we can call in capship support. Dismissed."

---

Lt. Mishal Al-Hamdi wanted to get back to her ship. There were no slavers here, she counted seven of her marines besides herself and her inspection platoon XO, three seriously wounded, she knew the Yggdrasil's XO was hostile and paranoid and was likely fearing the worst, and she wanted to submit her idea of tactical and strategic cooperation with the Esalonians to her captain, who would, if he approved, submit the plan to the Admiralty who would then make a recommendation to the Foreign Ministry.

The Yggdrasil had adequate medical facilities, not that she thought she was more seriously injured, but given some of the nasty wounds coming in she wanted to be sure she didn't have anything worse. On the other hand, trusting herself to a potential ally might help diplomatically.

UCS Civil Hands

The ship was already safe within the naval formation, which roamed along the outermost edges of Imperial waters. They'd take care not to get near again, because if they get near they are good as toast, despite their armament being able to fire well into Imperial lands-at 3080 km of striking range the Hellion was a weapon more than reliable. If the Raze-class was the gun, then the Hellion was the bullet.

However a feeling of paranoia among the boarders still existed. LCDR Capil radioed the nearby naval formation, a 20-strong Joint Strike Armada, of the United Commonwealth Navy, that the boarders on them were friendly. There was no need to worry, but given the rather large amount of casualties with gruesome wounds flowing in the Civil Hands would really need a good deal of help. The UCMedC were rushing in with their VTOL aircraft, waving off one at a time with casualties that needed more medical care than what the Civil Hands' medical suite can give.

In no time the wounded had their wounds patched up, and the more gravely injured ones that can do with the vessel's medical suite were confined into wards, with their less luckier ones flown away to a hospital ship. The ward was not your stereotypical nightmarish place in a hospital-the ward was not as hot and humid as it was in the hospitals of less-urbanized cities and towns in Esalonia, with constant ventilation keeping the air at a comfortable temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The ward was kept clean and spick-and-span. Each patient would have 3 meals, each with 1/3 the daily Recommended Nutrient Intake. There was just more than enough on the ship. The nearby supply ship/sub tender had more necessities in their stock, ready to be sent to ships with a low supply count. On the other hand, those that were significantly less gravely wounded were able to do away with either a bandage, an ice pack on the bruise, or both.

Nobody aboard the Yggdrasil knew that there were a lot of casualties aboard the Civil Hands. A pair of drones scouted the Esalonian ship. When word of this got to Lt. Al-Hamdi, she instructed the petty officer who had carried her XO into the medical ward to stop this from becoming an international incident.

"Get my radio from the top deck. If I don't re-establish contact with the Yggdrasil, they'll think something's wrong. The last thing we need is for us to have a misunderstanding out in the middle of Gothic waters."

The man ran up the stairs to the top deck and retrieved the platoon's radio, which he used to contact their ship. "RKS Yggdrasil, this is PO-3 Malik Al-Jadi. Civil Hands made a turn to avoid entering Scandinvan waters and a few people were injured. Nobody's dead so far but our XO's leg is out of action, our CO's being checked and the ship's CO is fucked up pretty bad."

They could be under duress. Commander Klebitz was on the other end of the radio, and had a tendency to see deception everywhere. Too many people had been lured into slavery by such cowardly means. "Al-Jadi, reiterate your status." This was KDF code-speak to allow a suspected captive to pass a duress code to the ship. Condition Green meant that the ship was friendly and they could speak freely. Condition Blue indicated the boarding party suspected some sort of deception. Condition White meant a confirmation the boarding party or part of it had been captured and the vessel was hostile.

"Condition Green, we're helping the crew take care of the injured as well as we can, but several of our own will be out of action some time."

Commander Klebitz suppressed a sigh of relief. "I'll pull back the drones and send out a helicopter to retrieve you from the ship. Our injured will be put on a VTOL back to our operating base in Milograd for further treatment."

"Thank you, ma'am," said PO3 Malik Al-Jadi.

"Thank you. The birdies will be refueled before the helicopter gets back, so we can be dropping liberty packages again in T-minus twelve hours."

The drones flew back in the opposite direction of the helicopter about halfway to the Esalonian ship, where it slowly began descent toward the ship while advising the vessel it was retrieving its boarding party.

Crisis Powers Decree

In order to better combat the growing threats posed by internal and external powers the Glorious Empire of the Scandinvans has been forced to reconsider the ongoing conditions which have aided the rise of rebellious forces throughout the Empire. The inability of the government to take proper action in relation to these issues derives from the unwillingness of the agents of the government to actually fulfill their sacred duties and from the fact that nobles often shield favored individuals from persecution. In order to rectify this situation the following ordinances shall now be enforced.

    1. The Council of Lords is hereby dissolved. The only ones allowed to formally retain their respective seats are those that the crown deems loyal.
    2. The Sons of Erid are to be formally placed in charge of the offices of Public Protection, Corrections, and Slave Regulation.
    3. Slaves cannot be admitted as witnesses without the consent of the office of Slave Regulations.
    4. Freedom of theological dialogue is reserved solely for the clergy.
    5. The office of Public Protections henceforth bans books in these categories: Natural Rights, Socialism, Abolitionism, Democracy, Libertarianism, Anarchism, Magical Fictions, Feminism, and Anthropology.
    6. All people found carried falsified identity cards to be imprisoned without limitations.
    7. Foreign travel to democratic, degenerate, heretical, and enemy states is to be considered treason.
    8. The Crown Prince is to completely assume legislative power.
    9. There shall be the creation of an office of Blood Cleanliness and Improvement.
    10. The office of Protections is to begin a public list of individuals deemed lacking in integrity.
    11. The universities of the Empire are required to record all classes.

Signed,
Voice of the Regency and the Emperor,
Servant of Erid's Will,
Imperial Steward,
Lord Erida

The Final Hour of Neadresgad

"The people of Samaria must bear their guilt, because they have rebelled against their God. They will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open." Hosea 13:16

Fire burns away all sin. Fire removes the taint of the old and allows the renewal of life free from the chains of the old. Fire brings the promise of salvation and liberation. Fire offers to people the hope that a new world might come to pass. Fire the sword by which the Almighty punishes those who defy him for all eternity.

Neadresgad, in its pride, has chosen to tear itself away from God and instead pursue its own secularist. In their pride they had failed to realize what could happen if they tried to use weapons they did not truly understand as their first and best defense. By doing so they had allowed the nuclear weapons they had deployed to be turned against them due to their incapability of properly securing them. For their failings nuclear fire had consumed the cities of Neadresgad utterly. Now only a fraction of the people still survived. Without the ability a connection to the outside world, as the imperial government had begun to jam their communications int he aftermath of the first few hours of the attack, and their supposed government destroyed there was only despair. No figure was capable of unifying them to attempt relief efforts and instead each person was left to search for loved ones or to mourn those they knew had died in the cities.

These sad survivor had not counted on their misfourtunes only increasing further. In the central ranges of the island existed a hidden nerve gas production facility, with accompanying artillery dispensary systems, which was still secured by a task from the Sons of Erid. Having counted on the revolt they had prepared a countermeasure to help secure the island. However, the nuclear detonations had destroyed any resistance which could be offered and thus it had been decided by the Sons to simply purge the remains of the population. Ir would, after all, send a stronger example to the whole of the world of the price of daring to defy the proper order of the Scandinvan Empire.

With their orders received from command to begin the purge the facility's canons began to rain a barrage of VX carrying canisters down upon the landscape. Within the course of twenty minutes thousands of heavy shells had been fired upon the landscape with the people unable to respond properly as no warning systems remained to give them the time needed to reach shelter nor was there an expectation of such an attack. Without this capability the spreading gas consumed the population as it spread across the majority of the island. The surviving few million people were largely massacred by the attack. Only a few percent survived due to the luck of the draw essentially due to them being in an enclosed safe space. Thus the rebellion of Neadresgad was destroyed nearly to the last. There was no hope left for their future as the Empire was beginning the movement of troops to secure the island and finish off the threat of the survivors...

"This is fucked up," said President Margaret Delray as General Igor Kaselev showed what looked like satellite photos showing Neadresgad even more of a bombed-out shit hole than it was after it was nuked.

"What do you propose?" asked Defence Minister Raghad Nazmareh. Now approaching 70 and planning retirement, the ViZion and Doomani War veteran was one of the few surviving members of the General Staff from that era. "Most of our fleet in that area that wasn't donated to the Free Milogradian Navy and other Kahanistanian-backed paramilitaries that of course got integrated into the Skyan-backed Milogradian forces is either under repairs or awaiting resupply, and it would have to traverse from Southwestern Gholgoth to Southeastern Gholgoth. It's a lot shorter a trip than deploying a fleet from Fort Neptune, but not only would the resupply take time to get to the fleet but moving them away would tempt Kraven to breach its ceasefire and try to recapture Milograd when our fleet is gone."

"We could, since our remaining fleet in that area is only about thirty percent of what we originally sent out, put out feelers to the Skyans at letting us have a naval base there which would let us keep that area secured while we mobilise another fleet. That would take even longer, and by then the Sons of Erid will probably have been given control of the Shadows and the Inquisition. Goodness knows what that will mean for the natives given those fucked up laws," the Minister continued.

"Rapid reaction forces." Delray said. "Platoons of special operations forces on long-range midget submarines coming ashore. I understand we used submarine insertion to place an operative into Parthia who then exposed Takht-e Qusseh to the world. Platoons of them. Not even so much spies, we know what's going on and it does call for some kind of limited engagement to try to stop the atrocities."

"That sounds like a good Plan B we'd like to have on standby," said Lieutenant General Leonard West, a delegate of the Chief of Staff from the Air Force. "I think we should have at least company strength and moving up to battalion strength special operation units ready to deploy in Neadresgad inside of six hours if need be. In the meantime, I propose a condemnation, a raising of alert status, and dispatching an unarmed rescue fleet clearly marked as such."

"Have it your way, General," said Delray.

President of the Free Republic of Kahanistan

The Government of Kahanistan must register its disgust with the new policies of the Scandinvan Empire that place the Sons of Erid in even greater political power, further restrict the rights of slaves, and endorse the mass murder of millions.

We open our doors to any refugee from Neadresgad that claims asylum in Kahanistan. We encourage Neadresgadian refugees to seek shelter in the nearest Skyan Consulate. If they desire asylum in Kahanistan rather than Havensky, they should ask for the Kahanistanian Interests Section of the Skyan Embassy as we do not have our own embassy in the Scandinvan Empire.

Furthermore, we are raising our alert status from DEFCON-YELLOW to DEFCON-RED to ensure the safety of surviving refugees who wish to flee this war zone.

Signed,
Margaret K. Delray,
President of Kahanistan

Your technological distinctiveness shall be added to our own. Your culture shall be supplanted by our own. And your lands will be made into our lands.

Voice of the Regency and the Emperor,
Servant of Erid's Will,
Imperial Steward,
Lord Erida

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters

Zahara Ramadi sat at her desk in a cubicle on the forty-sixth floor of the Foreign Ministry building. The mid-level Foreign Ministry bureaucrat tasked with inquiring of Lord Erida the rationale of this latest crisis powers expansion, at a time when Neadresgad was already a humanitarian catastrophe, or how the Empire would try to spin this latest act of sheer bastardry that would undoubtedly be justified on some bizarre scriptural interpretation, was overwhelmed with the task at hand. She had passed inquiries from her superiors to foreign governments before, usually friendly or at least neutral ones, some unfriendly or even hostile, but never one with which she was so much at odds with as one that treated women in general as inferiors and Arabs in particular as property.

After taking an anxiety pill and sitting at her computer going over the missive in her head for several minutes, the young woman formally titled "Deputy Under-Minister for Diplomatic Inquiries" began typing at a speed of well over 100 words per minute. She had a rough message typed up in a matter of minutes but the revision took her nearly an hour and an extra anxiety pill.

Mr. Erida,

The Government of Kahanistan is most concerned about the expansion of powers this crisis decree promotes. Furthermore, we are unsure how exactly the Imperial government is being restructured. First, the Council of Lords is dissolved but those the crown deems loyal by whatever criteria will be allowed to retain their seats... on what? A council that no longer exists?

Next, a terrorist organisation is placed in charge of Correction, Public Protection, which we later learn has the power to ban books and specifically enumerates nine categories, which we presume is not exhaustive, and worse, begin a public list of individuals deemed by unknown criteria lacking in integrity with fairly unpleasant implications, and Slave Regulation, which has the authority to decide if a slave may be admitted as a witness. Under that arrangement a system where slaves owned by Sons of Erid who are deemed loyal by them would have a decisive advantage in court cases against someone whose slave was excluded as a witness looks to become a distinct possibility.

As for freedom of theological dialogue, we had been under the impression it had been restricted to the clergy for centuries, hence the mass burnings for "heresy" that have helped make your nation so notorious even among slave nations in the eyes of the greater part of the international community. We are most dismayed to hear of additional restrictions being promulgated, especially ones that infringe upon academic freedom.

While we certainly qualify as a democratic state, and probably heretical because we tolerate religious beliefs that others consider heretical, and degenerate is a subjective term, for example, we would describe a nation with access to modern technology that still uses slaves degenerate, it does dismay us that travel here will now be considered treason. All Kahanistanian immigration officers will now be instructed not to visa-stamp the passports of Scandinvan travelers, tourists, students, adventurers, et cetera, who may or may not be loyal to the Empire, so as not to endanger them upon their return to the Empire, and warn them of the risks they run if they return and offer asylum to those who choose not to. We have, of course, long had an open door citizenship policy to slaves who become free when they enter the Kahanistanian EEZ or are picked up by a Kahanistanian ship. We are uncertain of the penalty for treason in the Empire but think it is probably far more severe than the maximum of twenty to life in a Kahanistanian prison one risks by defecting to the enemy in wartime.

We are unsure what the Office of Blood Cleanliness and Improvement is supposed to do. From the little information that makes our shores about your belief system, is slavery not supposed to improve a race over generations to the point that their 'barbarism' is bred out of them and they become thus 'redeemed'? Other than that and enforcing miscegenation laws, which we believed were already being enforced by local police or other types of law enforcement, we are completely stumped.

The Crown Prince assuming complete legislative power is disturbing, but we were also under the impression your nation was already an absolute monarchy and the Emperor already held that. That reminds me, you've added a couple of titles to your name on top of the old one of Imperial Steward. The Voice of the Regency and the Emperor implies that the Emperor cannot speak for himself. The Servant of Erid's Will grants the Sons of Erid governmental powers. What has happened to the Emperor? Has there been a coup d'etat? The increase in powers and transferring many of them to terrorists parallel the events following the coup d'etat in Parthia several years ago, before they promptly attacked us.

While law enforcement in Kahanistan takes a dim view of falsified identity cards as well, does "imprisoned without limitations" mean "for life" or "without limitations on prison conditions"?

Signed,

Zahara Ramadi,

Deputy Under-Minister of Foreign Affairs for Diplomatic Inquiries
