Crawford, Numenvernien Fief
Nickname: Elephants, Lakers
Founded: 924
Ground: Orangi Stadium (61,000)
Manager: Arturo Mancini (49)
Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Theoklitos (23) *** Lorence (26), Pell (24), Na'Kele (23), Reiniger (24) *** Noldor (28), Sherman (29 - Capt) *** Muller (29), Coultan (20), McBride (24) *** Kurosawa (30)
Key Substitutes: Poindexter (CB - 20), Hublot (ANY - 18)
Kit Details: CCFC's gorgeous teal, crimson and gold home kit is the envy of the league. Their white away kit, with gold and teal accents, isn't too shabby either.
Preview: It's time to put up or shut up for Crawford City FC. Four years ago, new ownership came in and broke up the team that had just gotten 4th place in favor of setting up their "long-term vision". After a mediocre few seasons of this rebuilding and reposturing, it's time for the club to deliver to fans the glorious future that was promised. They got the internationally accomplished manager they wanted in Quebec's Arturo Mancini. They splurged on big-name transfer after big-name transfer, almost entirely reversing Crawford's former identity as an unflashy but hardworking squad built on local talent. They even rebranded the club with shiny new logos, stadium renovations and kits. All of this is great, and has fan excitement higher than ever, but it has yet to translate to success on the pitch. All the pieces are finally in place for this season and Crawfordians should rightfully expect vast improvement from last season's disjointed 10th-place effort. Mancini doesn't need to make the UICA this year, but he needs to show progress - that this team has the potential to do it. And potential is something they most certainly have. Spike Lorence comes over from relegated rival Versiaville to form one of the best fullback tandems in the league with Pasarga national teamer Jens Reiniger. Defensive midfielders Phillip Sherman and Eido Noldor, both Cosumar-capped, are an equally formidable tandem that can break up possession against the best HarlighetLigan midfields. Where CCFC struggled at times last season was finding a rhythm going forward. That's where Kim Coultan comes in. Schottia's star CAM arrives straight from Jottnar Kallsmudden of the Buyan Top Division, and is being handed the keys to the Crawford attack. Wingers Adren Muller and Brendan McBride can be great complimentary players, but they weren't capable of carrying the load alone without a true star playmaker last year. That is what Mancini thinks he has in Coultan provided she can adjust to the HarlighetLigan. And of course, Dymtro Kurosawa is the main man up top. He was the headliner of last season's transfer window and scores 14 goals in his debut campaign at Orangi Stadium. Crawford lack bench depth, but their first eleven is remarkably well-balanced, strong across the pitch and easy on the eye with Mancini's tactics that prioritize possession and smooth passing. Look for them to make some noise in 1003 and even more in 1004.
Last Season: 10th (14-4-16). Prediction: 7th.
Port Stoneshore, Stoneshore Fief
Nickname: Greys
Founded: 771
Ground: SweetHaven Stadium (70,000)
Manager: Douglas Tibet (40)
Starting XI (5-3-2): Stefansen (27) *** Arntz (25), Doblet (22), Singleton (29), Houser (26), Lowry (20) *** Penterzen (23), Andela (23), Overstreet (25) *** Ebenazher (26), Herbjornsrud (24)
Key Substitutes: Eizenhart (RM - 27)
Kit Details: At home they wear their famous greys. Shirt pictured right, with modern maroon and white patterning on the predominantly grey shorts (like on the shoulder). On the road, they wear blue and white hoops with solid blue shorts and blue/white hooped socks.
Preview: This used to be one of the easiest previews. Stoneshore... well, they were Stoneshore. Eleven hulking muscleheads fueled by hatred playing like they just emerged from the deepest dungeons of hell. Their mantra was defense by brute force and they consistently led the league in opponents' ankles broken. Not really, but it wouldn't surprise me. You could tell Stoneshore is a gridiron town by the way its biggest soccer club played. It only sometimes provided the desired result, but even the best of sides dreaded their annual trip to SweetHaven Stadium. Things are more nuanced now under Douglas Tibet. Now in his second season, Tibet has introduced some technical savvy, swagger and subtle charm into the footballing acumen at Stoneshore. It's still difficult to get past their five-man back line and the massive frame of Adren Stefansen, but they're now a dynamic threat on the counter-attack with lots of pace on the flanks (young wingbacks Lowry and Arntz) and throughout the midfield, with springy strikers capable of getting in behind the defense and finishing in the blink of an eye. Contrary to their stereotype, the Greys are actually a young and exciting team now. Only one player older than 26 in the starting eleven. They improved from 16th to 11th last season under Tibet, and I see the mysterious manager continuing to propel them in the right direction. Chad Overstreet, a former standout at Crawford City who was available on the cheap after his foreign career stalled, could've been one of the underrated steals of the transfer window.
Last Season: 11th (14-4-16). Prediction: 11th.
Mortim, Morponte Fief
Nickname: Riders
Founded: 856
Ground: OmniTech Park (29,680)
Manager: Guston Cox (75)
Starting XI (4-4-2): Hodson (32) *** Skarasen (29), Bossard (31), Sigurdsson (23), Na'Tam (26) *** Boccarin (30), Norquist (23), Connor (37 - Capt), Shorts (24) *** Redalen (20), Hummel (22)
Key Substitutes: Delph (CB - 30), Csihar (CM - 21), Na'Bengna (ST - 19)
Kit Details: At home, Morponte Fief wear a shirt of brown and pale orange stripes (pictured right) with white shorts and socks of the same shade of orange. Outsiders call their "Reese's kit" ugly, but it is beloved and stepped in history in Mortim. Away, they wear a white shirt with two thin orange columns down the center with brown shorts with orange striping on the sides and white socks.
Preview: When it looks like you're goin' down. And the fans are booin'. Who you gonna call? Guston Cox, apparently. When Morponte Fief shockingly found themselves in an automatic relegation spot a third of the way through the season (just a year removed from 6th place!), longtime manager Grant Bulle was asked to resign and former Versiaville manager Guston Cox was lured out of retirement to take the reigns. Fortunes immediately turned around and the Riders even found themselves in the top half for a brief spell before ultimately finishing 12th. So Cox, at 75, hesitantly agreed after much persuasion to postpone his sunny Sarrbian retirement for another year. Before assessing this year's team, let's identify why they dropped six places in 1002. The short answer: Kyron Everdale. The club is accustomed to selling off its top talent and replacing from within via their prolific youth academy, but they underestimated just how important the Cosumar national teamer was to their exhilarating 1001 season when they sold him to Lotus Park of Brenecia. Their midfield was surprisingly feeble without him, both in defense and the attack. And they didn't have the strike firepower nor defensive support to make up for it. And it seems like they might be heading down the same type of path this year after selling abroad perhaps the most extraordinary talent the club has ever produced: goalkeeper Esteban Hernandez, who was already the best in the league at age 21. They bought veteran netminder Alvar Hodson from relegated Treftadaeth Alliance to make sure they have someone capable between the posts, but there is no replacing a lad who led the HarlighetLigan in saves for the last two years in a row. Morponte Fief might be in for another relegation scrap unless they see big-time improvement from their latest batch of prospects or a big season from on-loan Fransborg set Njilkaer striker Lasse Hummel.
Last Season: 12th (13-6-15). Prediction: 16th, Relegation Playoff.
Kaldukosic, Kaldukosic Fief
Nickname: Champs or Stars
Founded: 756
Ground: Leviathan Arena (98,000)
Manager: Corey Simmons Jr. (43)
Starting XI (4-5-1): Tennfjord (TOR - 29) *** Chance (27), Litchmoor (22), Gurrevitz (32), Banner (24) *** Perkins (24), Archambault (25), McSaunders (32 - Capt), Wadimu (23), Antonsson (29) *** Hodges (29)
Key Substitutes: Garyson (CB - 33), Yilmaz (LM - 19)
Kit Details: At home, they wear a dark green shirt with unique white columns that curve towards the right shoulder, a luxurious yellow collar, white shorts and dark green socks with thin yellow circles at the top. Their secondary kit features a crisp white shirt (pictured right) with dark green shorts.
Preview: Daniel Laramie was hired to whip this undisciplined squad into shape three years ago, but they had their worst season in club history under his watch last season and he was relieved of his duties despite a promising first two seasons. His fruitless tactical modifications and frequent hairdryer treatments last season only made things worse and the players clearly became demoralized and very nearly mutinous as the season wore on. A lo of names were rumored as replacements, such as Martyn Dirchs, fresh off his failure at Real. But in the end, the board opted for a risky selection, but one that will be popular with the fans: former striker Corey Simmons, one of the club's all-time great players. Simmons, a National Team star, actually played for the club as recently as five years ago. But in the time since, he has been an assistant and is now entrusted with his first full management job. It's a big spotlight for someone with no experience, but the intensely passionate Simmons has never been bothered by spotlights. As for expectations, the club's ultimate goal is to return to UICA play, but realistically they'd be happy with a return to top half or 'round thereabouts next season. Their back line is pretty average, but their midfield offers some real flair, especially with the addition of Eastfield Lodge national teamer Georgina Wadimu, who scored against Cosumar in the World Cup. Chris Hodges is a one-man force and clinical finisher up top as well, and will be hungry to redeem himself after an underwhelming season in 1002.
Last Season: 13th (11-9-14). Prediction: 9th.
Samaj, Culmarland Fief
Founded: 906
Ground: Stadion Jägare (32,000)
Manager: Casimir Salinas (72)
Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Kingsley (26) *** Banderas (31), Belfry (22), Kristiansen (23), Dalmshelf (25) *** Na'Kone (30), del Fuego (27) *** Kayton (34 - Capt), Mikkelund (29), Deville (24) *** Xenophon (32)
Key Substitutes: Aleksovic (GK - 20), Huthson (ST - 35)
Kit Details: Their home kit (pictured right) features their iconic diagonal-color shirt and burnt-orange shorts. Their away kit this year is entirely the shade of dark yellow found on the home kit's collar. Solid color, with only burnt-orange numbers/names and other subtle accents.
Preview: Last season marked Samaj's long-awaited return to the top flight. They were a popular pick to finish last, but the Hunters never looked like going down last year. Casimir Salinas had them confident, and they even played some entertaining football along the way. When on their best form they actually looked a genuinely exciting side, with intricate attacking play that occasionally fooled even the league's best defenses. They didn't sit back and take a conservative defensive mentality, but attacked the HarlighetLigan as if still dominating in the SekundarLigan, and their boldness was rewarded. Much of their success revolved around the sudden emergence of young Stephon Deville as a creative force and his exquisite interplay with their Nepharim captain Elaine Kayton in attacking midfield. Guys like Jacob Mikkelund and Ashton Dalmshelf proved that they can be effective players at this level too. But, you know what they say, second seasons are often the hardest. It's going to be a challenge for Samaj, who are one of the weaker teams in the division on first glance, to keep their heads above water. Cassandra City raided them of prized young defender Kaden Wing over the transfer window, and club talisman Kayton is another year older. But the player who you should all tune in to watch, and who could very well spur the Hunters on to an unexpectedly good season, is Isadora Xenophon. The Pravenna international, though 32, was still extremely productive in the A-League last season for Francisca Orient. She could start for better HarlighetLigan sides than Samaj. A long and lanky target who can also operate in tight spaces and bury tough shots with the best strikers in Cosumar, Xenophon instantly makes this team so much more dangerous in the final third. I like them to claim a few big scalps. They've certainly improved, but the problem is...so has everyone else.
Last Season: 14th (9-12-13). Prediction: 14th.
Na'Ailee, Na'Malsille Fief
Founded: 945
Ground: Varela Road (28,340)
Manager: Filipp Jeov
Starting XI (4-1-3-2): Gauthier (30) *** Grimswald (22), Aslam (26), Jacob (25), Parkhurst (29) *** Na'Kebia (23) *** Folchart (23), Finlayson (LTN - 29), Diawara (32) *** Montag (29), Cuh-ma (32)
Key Substitutes: Ford (CAM - 35)
Kit Details: Na'Malsille is all about their bright blue and neon orange, so they try to wear that combination whenever possible, whether it's orange primary or blue primary (pictured right), with little regard to home or away. They also have an orange, black and grey alternate kitthat they wear a few times a year.
Preview: Let's face it, the Mariners were bad last season. They avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth on Week 34. And more than that - they were boring. Completely devoid of playmakers, they scored only 26 goals - which is 15 fewer than the bottom two clubs both had. Only Filipp Jeov's shrewd defensive tactics and goalkeeper Helmut Gauthier saved them from a swift return to the SekundarLigan. I don't know if the people of Malsille can take another year of that misery. Fortunately, the board realized the dire situation and invested in new talent for the 1003 season. Nabil Aslam, one of Patistan's best defenders, is hand-plucked from Mingoara Athletic to replace the aging Yttribian Everett Abello. They also added William Finlayson, the 29-year-old MVP of the Lutine league. Finlayson is a bit of an X-Factor in midfield, he will be eager to prove himself in a higher-quality league and could shine or be a complete bust. $6 million is a steep price to pay for someone like that, but the Mariners were desperate. But for me, the most important signing was that of former Sabrefell Moths striker Oskar Montag for half the sticker price. It seems like the Nepharim has been around forever, but he's really only 29 still, and he is all but guaranteed to bang in a respectable goal tally in a league of less prestige than he is used to. In between these foreign transfer prizes, the glue of the Na'Malsille squad is still their cast of young homegrown talent. Their fortunes will in large part depend on the improvement of players like Justinian Grimswald, Brianna Jacob, Nikolae Na'Kebia and Rupert Folchart - all of whom underwhelmed last season.
Last Season: 15th (9-9-16). Prediction: 13th.
Ruminov, Gundar Fief
Founded: 924
Ground: New Harmonia Stadium (36,000)
Manager: Jehan Bair (50)
Starting XI (4-4-2): Smith (37) *** Pertwee (25), Pugh (32), Matsumoto (23), Nolan (23 - VLM) *** de Wit (26), Esquire (33), Lindbloom (22), Hallen (25) *** Gope (33 - Capt), Jonferth (24)
Key Substitutes: Lubiflor (ST - 22)
Kit Details: Their home whites are pictured right. Their olive-green away kit features black accents and state-of-the-art geometric texturing from Meski.
Preview: West Gundar have long been associated with relegation battles and financial struggles, but they're in good health right now coming off their first ever title in the SekundarLigan. It also helps that they're now owned by a mysterious energy entrepreneur who is reported to have significant wealth to invest in the club and that they'll be part of the HarlighetLigan's revenue pie again this year. So they have a definite vested interest in staying up. The squad is basically the same as the one that won the SekundarLigan last year, so Jehan Bair will be hedging his bets that continuity, familiarity, chemistry, etc. are enough to keep the Rugged Men and Women out of the bottom two places. But it's not like they don't have any flair either. Striker Delwyth Jonferth was out of this world last season, shredding Sekundar defenses to the tune of 24 goals and 13 assists...making her directly responsible for almost half of the team's goals. If she can come anywhere close to that level of production in the HarlighetLigan, the future is bright for West Gundar. She is the bona-fide star of this team, but they have plenty of experienced pieces around her that can facilitate and get the job done. Apoxian keeper Tim Smith, Septon Pertwee, Mark Hallen and Jon Gope have all had some degree of success in the top flight before. It's hard to predict which way the season will go at the newly-expanded Harmonia Stadium, but I think West Gundar have the best chance to stay up of the newly-promoted sides.
Last Season: SekundarLigan Champions (20-6-8). Prediction: 15th.
Pelethas, Morponte Fief
Founded: 835
Ground: Drango Way (24,000)
Manager: Euan Jersey (37)
Starting XI (4-2-2-2): Zerchodoy (29) *** De Molay (31), Daleiden (22), Na'Nockeby (21), MacLean (29) *** Algar (34 - Capt), Carmichael (23) *** Alcantara (27), Driscoll (33) *** Abernathy (21), Tyson (30)
Key Substitutes: Varghese (AM - 18)
Kit Details: In solidarity with their mining roots, Pelethas wear their classic Silver&Gold (pictured right) at home. The cool mountaintops on the chest are a new detail this year. On the road, they wear this smooth gold and crimson kit.
Preview: It has only been seven years since Pelethas United last played in the HarlighetLigan, but it feels like an eternity for the Miners and their fans. Then finally, in their first season under young hot-shot manager Euan Jersey, the Silver & Gold staked their return to the promised land in 1002. Now it's time to find a way to stay there, and that is the herculean challenge presented to the ambitious Jersey. He has set up this team to play a style of football that is not very exciting to watch, but tends to quietly grind out results. While teams like West Gundar will come out swinging and make more noise at the onset, a HarlighetLigan season is a marathon and it's possible that Pelethas could be poised to meet their goal in the long run. But what are the chances the players actually have what it takes? That's the question, isn't it. The first name you need to know is Ryan Carmichael. The Llamanean defensive midfielder was their biggest transfer acquisition, and his physical presence and composure in the back will be crucial to executing the style Pelethas want to play. Gerhard Driscoll, formerly of Parrhesia United, isn't the paciest winger anymore, but the Nepharim gives them such much-needed quality in the attacking half. Playing off of him will be veteran striker Trygve Tyson - one of the only holdovers from the Miners' last stint in the top flight. He's a bit of a squat, plodding player who won't create his own chances, but if the ball meets his boot or head......the goalkeeper will be tested. Phoenix Abernathy, his young strike partner, is an interesting foil. The local lad constantly amazed us last year with his athletic ability but struggled to produce the final product. Pelethas have a squad of questionable quality lacking in HarlighetLigan experience, which could be a recipe for disaster, but it's hard to forget how effective they were in the second division last year.
Last Season: 2nd in SekundarLigan (18-6-10). Prediction: 18th, Relegation.
Centus, Gellano Fief
Founded: 924
Ground: Somerset Road (45,000)
Manager: Akira Eld (63)
Starting XI (4-4-2): Mulsen (26) *** Wolfe (30), Ebuzoeme (20), Cornish (27), Dias Pinto (19) *** Romijnsen (33), Haines (24), Gutinho (22), Wilska (25) *** Gregory (26), Ellis (23)
Key Substitutes: Writhlin (MF - 20)
Kit Details: Their primary shirt is pictured right, worn with solid green shorts and red socks. Their secondary kit features a red and green shirt with white shorts, and striped red/green socks.
Preview: Akira Eld, who famously took Real Azuris from SekundarLigan obscurity to consecutive HarlighetLigan titles before being sacked two years ago, is now trying to do the same thing at Centus. Build a club with traits of being a potential dynasty from the ground up and realize that framework of potential. His first season at Somerset Road was rocky, but the owners were patient and Eld guided the Serpents back up last year with a late run of form and thrilling playoff victory on penalties. But CS have always been a yo-yo club. This is nothing new. Now is the part where Eld will really earn his keep and, just maybe, leave a legacy. To make Centus the powerhouse they were in the pre-FSF days of yore, Eld needs to start by simply staying up in 1003. That sounds cliché, but once that baseline is established he can really start to work his magic. But right now, nothing can be taken for granted. Their transfer business has been minimal. They've purchased midfielder Wayne Writhlin from the FC Samotath reserves for their bench, signed incumbent goalkeeper Leo Mulsen to a new contract and added his Semar countryman Trevoh Ebuzoeme to the starting back four on a free from FC Nuholm. Nothing earth-shattering. No infusion of experience or foreign flair. I'm sure Akira Eld knows what he's doing, but it's hard not to be a little pessimistic. Centus look a really solid side....for the SekundarLigan. I'm not convinced they've taken enough of a step up since last year to match the step up in competition. But at the same time, there's a core of players who play well together; there's Milo Gregory in front of goal - he's pretty good; and it's easy to forget that Gutinho was a finalist for HarlighetLigan U21 Player of the Year just a few seasons ago. The West Sunrisian is capped internationally now and is probably the team's most creative and technical player. Perhaps Eld is sitting on secret knowledge that Gutinho's game will take another big jump forward this year.
Last Season: 3rd Place in SekundarLigan (17-7-10). Prediction: 17th, Relegation.
