He didn't know what to say except "Sir, may I call you back. I am dealing with an issue with one of the cadets and...hlmph" His sentence is interrupted by an elbow to the gut. "I'll get back to you within the hour sir." He hung up the phone and started barking orders to the cadets to help restrain Cadet Huxley. "Nurse, hit him with the sedative already! He is ready to start tearing the other cadets apart!" The nurse, a small elderly woman with quite a few years as a medical practitioner, ran over to Huxley and gave him a swift jab with the needle and he went out like a light. She then drew blood to figure out what might have caused him to snap, if it was biological. She turned to Dietrich. "When he wakes up, send him to the Psychology professor. It might be that he is over stressed and his mind took a vacation, but who knows?" Dietrich sighed and thought, "Was I really that tough on them? Could I have done this to them? No, they went through Basic with Drill Sergeants worse than me and they immerged unscathed." He turned to the cadets and said, "Cadets, this is a direct order, I want all you to report to the Psychology department for enhanced mental screenings. I will fax over what is required, and then some, to the department head. You will have your screenings scheduled by Friday. Also, I just learned I am being transferred. I have not learned when, but I do know this, the Sergeant Major will be taking over drill and instruction for the remainder of the year, or until a suitable replacement can be found. You are free to return to your bunks, but have one man keep an eye on Cadet Huxley. If need be, trade out in shifts." He walked back down to his car and drove home. When he was back, he gave the Secretary a call. "Sir, when do you want me to report?"
"Change of plans," Dunn said unexpectedly. "You're going to be leading the State Security Department. SpecUnit will be a component of this new formation. The unorganized militias who have been roaming around independently before are now integrated into the SSD. Past iterations of this concept, an independent civilian security militia, have unfortunately turned into disasters. I can name two, the Italian Blackshirts and Nazi Schutzstaffel. Do not let the State Security function like them. If you do it's going to land us in deep trouble. Keep to your guidelines and don't perform outside your authorized jurisdiction. Report to the Military Department building."
"Sir, are you sure I am the best candidate?" Dietrich replied with apprehension. "I have no experience as a department head, and I am sure there are hundreds of other service members who are better capable." He sighed. "But sir, if you need me to do this, I will perform my duty to the best of my ability. But I want to pick my staff members, I want military benefits for the SSD, and I don't want anyone other than President Andrews, You, and a select number of senators to answer too. I want to be able to carry out my job with as little interference and red tape as possible. Also, what would be a good help is a building outside of Jamestown, but close enough that I could drive to the capital building if need be. Finally, I want my cadets upon graduation to be placed in command of their own militia. I know them and I can easily keep an eye on them." He was about to hang up the phone when he added "I will be there in twenty minutes."
