GOOD THING IT'S PLAYED ON ICE
Grizzlies sore after narrow win over hosts
by Sven Magnusson

ZYARN, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST (TP) - The sometimes-ridiculous Quodite science programme ¡SCIENCE BLAST! is often criticised in the host nation for being over the top and recklessly irresponsible, but they did manage to make a good prediction for the game between the Quodites and Toyur. Their study into what happens when an unstoppable force (the Grizzlies' offensive machine) meets an immovable object (the Quodite defensive wall, allowing only 8 goals in 10 games) came up with one of two results: a 4-4 game before overtime, or a 1-0 Grizzlies victory. Toyur slodged through the holding, hooking, grabbing, and generally roughing up by the Quodite players to come away with that 1-0 result, and advance into the quarter-finals of the World Cup of Hockey.

'I can see why they're so eager to host this competition,' said head coach Viktor Brandin, himself the victim of a bump by a Quodite player as they left the ice for the second intermission. 'It may be international rules, but they wouldn't get away with all of that stuff anywhere else.'

Toyur's speed drew a staggering 8 penalties against the home side, who were well supported at the Eli F. Baker Memorial Arena in Zyarn. Deafening roars were heard anytime a host player made a hit, or a penalty was killed off. Ironically, Toyur were the home team on the scoreboard, being the higher-seeded team going into this game. Life was also difficult on the Grizzlies bench, where the security assigned to guard the area behind the glass on the bench was more interested in watching the game than preventing any mishaps between the fans and Toyuri players. Markus Brahe spent much of his time on the bench arguing with the Quodites behind the glass, but thankfully nothing came to blows or an international incident.

The game itself was a sluggish affair. Toyur were called for many offside calls after Quodite players delayed their tagging up at the blue line, or pushed players over the blue line before the puck crossed it when Toyur were attempting to enter the zone. The home team seemed less interested in scoring than roughing up the opponents, making the Grizzlies wish they were back at Finntasia to soak in the state-of-the-art jacuzzi tubs to relax their muscles after the game.

The only goal of the game came late in the second period. Whilst on the powerplay, Niklas Aspelin's point shot was tipped by Niels Linderoth past John Romkema in the Quodite goal. The Grizzlies managed to hold on for the 1-0 win, eliminating the hosts and escaping further physicality.

The quarterfinal matchup should be more of a calmer affair, at least in terms of physical play. The Grizzlies will now take on the Rockets of Newmanistan, themselves a team who can score seemingly at will, in New Cleethorpes. Newmanistan won their much calmer affair with Secristan 3-1. It should not be a game for one who enjoys a defensive spectacle. The game can be seen on TSTV1.

Andrew’s Space

Thus far we continue to have quite a good run here in Quintessence of Dust, earning a second seed for the playoffs, and then socking it to Sibirsky to set up some fun with Tocrowkia! Tocrowkia is, after all, one of our biggest rivals in baseball and given that the chances for both of our nations to win World Baseball Classic 16 seemed to have gone up by 500% with the news of Newmanistan departing the international scene (joking aside, we are saddened by that), there has been some rumors that the gloves might fly a little bit in this one. I don’t know quite why that is the case, though. While we will never back down from physical play, that is not what got us here, and is not the way that we are going to play against the Nordics. So if Audrey Haviland begins getting sympathetic towards her sister’s fate against Cassadagans, and tries to get her teammates to start shit with us, then we are going to be spending a lot of time on the power play. We don’t need to make any adjustments to our game, everything is rolling along just fine, just like the fashion show in New Cleethorpes. Against Sibirsky, it was another stellar performance by Melanie Roy in goal for us and as usual she deflects all of that praise to the people that play in front of her. They have done a good job as well, give them credit. Meghan Stafford is rolling along too, picking up two more goals and increasing her point streak to six games. Really now, she has done that, I just never got around to blogging about it! Take my word! The other quarterfinal games will see Newmanistan and Toyur, Valanora and Kelssek, then Plutoni and The Fanboyists. People from all across the world were relieved when, following the game winning goal in overtime by Maarkus Stahlburg that the game really did end in the sudden death fashion and did not continue to play! That’s gonna be it for me for now, I’ll be back tomorrow to summarize the match with the Nordics.

Plutoni ice hockey blog: WCoH 12, Round of 16
Uncharacteristic excitement sees Plutoni through

The national team had a relatively easy road to the playoffs, drawing against Tocrowkia and winning their other nine games. Taeshan, in contrast, had lost four games and needed overtime against The Babbage Islands to make the playoffs. It set up a high-scoring battle in Kynythin (probably), where no lead felt safe. At the end of play, however, it was Plutoni who came out on top, 4-3.

Pensban Gamela scored first, 8:37 into the game, assisted by Mirsh Atzin. Taeshan quickly struck back through their first line left wing, however, and a right defender gave them the lead at 15:58. They settled into defense early in the second period, and it took a power play to change the momentum. Jofri Spendral tied the game for Plutoni, sparking increased attack from both sides. It was Matthew Wroder who eventually broke through with a goal at 13:01.

Plutoni seemed in command heading into the third period, and Turfli Jeamin scored at 4:26. Taeshan fought back, however, scoring again at 9:32, but despite some last-ditch attempts the score of 4-3 held up. Plutoni advance to face The Fanboyists, who defeated Sarzonia 6-5 in overtime (sudden death, of course).

Comments:
1. icebaby: I like one-game knockouts, spares you from having to come up with long subtitles.
2. hawkeye: hmm, dunno what to think about Fanboyists taking Sarzonia out. They'll be keyed up for this one.
3. combatant94: icebaby, look what you've started.
4. icebaby: What? At least the Quodites try to strike a balance, back here if you were even considering words with dashes in them to start with there'd be other problems with "high".
5. bocky_boy: Uh-oh, you've seen how they're labeling the quarterfinals? This could be trouble.

"See, boss, this New Bruxen Hotel Casino is offering lines or something. It's probably what cut into our business for the last round in the World Cup of Hockey."

Bob the Bookie reclined in his rickety, squeaky, high-backed office chair. While hardly the most comfortable thing in the world, in the criminal underworld you wanted to show some measure of authority. Also, it allowed him to sit with his back facing the door and issue, unseen, commands to henchmen like in the gangster movies.

"Lines of what? Forwards? Defencemen? Cocaine?"

"I don't know, just... lines. For playoff games, it says."

"Probably cocaine then. You know how I feel about drugs. Exterminate." Bob the Bookie said, making a crushing motion with his fist.

"What?"

"Exterminate them!" Bob the Bookie insisted.

"Beggin' your pardon, boss, but what with? It's probably a big, legit company, with its own security and all. We've got like three guys, at the most I could get my cousin who works weeknights as a bouncer for a fourth..."

"Don't we have weapons? Rocket launchers or something? You were talking about that sometime."

"I've got a knife. It's quite sharp."

"You make a fool out of me, Miguel!" Bob the Bookie barked, and sullenly turned his chair around. "Get the fuck out, you worthless cunt."

Miguel sighed and made a mental note to follow up on that lead working for the Triads.

Caleb Admele's Journal Entry Day 1515.

Man I wish I was cleared to play that game today. We lost 3-1 as Vikki (Victoria Shenko) let in an unlucky bounce for a goal with about a minute left in the 3rd period as Kelssek knocked us out of the World Cup of Hockey. We did manage to get on the board first thanks to a power-play goal from Issac (Maynerd). Kelssek tied at 1-1 on a PP goal of their own in the 2nd thanks to Dubois. The 2nd Kelssek goal came when Oberforsky's shot trickled in off Vikki's skate. We did get a couple of shots off with the extra attacker, but Crawford added the empty-netter with 7 seconds left to seal our fate. The bad news is we're going home, while the good news is for the first time in almost 5 years, WE'RE GOING HOME!

[OOC: Well, then. I need to learn how to learn how to read stuff like that then, don't I? :D)]
=======================================================================================

Maarkus was pulling on his padding when Artie approached him.

"Hmm? Yeah, Art? There something you need?" he asked detachedly. Maarkus was almost always detached shortly before a game. Immediately before and during one, he was impassioned semi-rage personified, but this was the calm before the storm.

"Yeah. Jus' wanted to apologize again. I made an arse of myse--"

"We're past that, Art. You apologized for your behavior once, and the entire team accepted it. You've been fine since, there's no reason for further apology."

"I still made an ass of myself."

Maarkus shrugged and finished strapping his helmet on.

"If it bothers you that much, make up for it by kicking ass out on the ice today. Cleanly, for preference. But just be your usual menacing self, and Plutoni won't be able to stick with us. They're good, but I think we've got it in us to pull this off."

Artie grinned. "Yeah. And show 'em we don' need robots on our team."

"From what I understand, the robots are rather human-like, if a bit more business-like in how they play."

"Just on concept. We can win with flesh-and-blood. We'll have that going for us. And that passion. We've got it. I think they do too, but not to the same extent."

Maarkus shrugged again. The thrill and adrenaline was starting to flow into his veins.

"Of course. We'll just have to go out there, kick their asses, and show it on the ice."

"Count on it." Artie gave him a thumbs up and walked back to his locker to place his helmet on his head.

"Nighty-night," he growled as he picked up his stick. "Don't let the bruises bother you much."

"Are we going to have another chat now?"

"Don't you want to?"

"Not particularly, I really just want to watch the World Cup and the other games in the tournament."

"But this is when we always have our random conversations that are somewhat enlightening and somewhat state the obvious."

"Not tonight man, the Marauders are playing against Sarzonia in the World Cup, we've never beaten them in football."

"Really? Well that is quite odd."

"Aye, only a handful of nations can claim that they have never lost to our football team, much like the hockey team really."

"How do you think we became so good in both of the sports?"

"Skill, training, and of course a lot of luck going our way."

"Is is such a simple mixture that creates the sustained success of both?"

"Well, it does help that there is a significant force within the country that pays for the top notch equipment, coaches, and facilities to facilitate our athletes and teams winning."

"Would not explain why some poor nations tend to do quite well though."

"I thought I said I did not want to talk tonight."

"Oh fine, if you insist, but I was really looking forward to another one of our riveting discussions."

"Tomorrow we will have another but tonight we take off a night and relax, just be proud, patriotic fans of our national teams."

Plutoni ice hockey blog: WCoH 12, Quarterfinals
Power to Plutoni

The Fanboyists' national ice hockey team is relatively popular in Quintessence of Dust, site of this WCoH. The "Iron Tide" had advanced to their first quarterfinal with aggressive attack and physical defense. But it didn't last; the Tide's aggression powered them to a tying goal, but a power-play proved their undoing as Plutoni advanced.

Vaalhulm Aandrikson dominated the Fanboyist goal through much of the first period, and Plutoni's first goal was frankly lucky; with players from both teams scrambling for possession in front of the goal, Amy Pilshaft poked the puck above the fray--and past the imposing Aandrikson to score 17:53 into the first period. The Iron Tide held strong for the remainder of the period, though, and eventually tied the game 7:05 into the second. Waaltur Braannur muscled his way past Turfli Jeamin, and set up Kristin Maarks to tie the game.

The Fanboyists were anything but intimidated by the ten-rank gap, and attacked like equals throughout the game. So, too, did they defend, delivering impassioned if ineffectual checks. Nina Pivas was rattled after a close encounter with Maarkus Stahlburg; in contrast, Artie Weiss' roughing penalty on Smed Kubalee hardly seemed problematic. It was blatant enough for even these referees to penalize, however. Despite The Fanboyists' otherwise impressive penalty killing, that time around, Amakar Flurian was able to score at 14:29 in the second period.

From there on in, it was a matter of holding firm for Plutoni. This was no easy feat, with both Waaltur and Theodur Braannur threatening, but it was nevertheless Mirsh Atzin who recorded the final goal in an empty net. Plutoni advance to play Valanora; it is the teams' first meeting since the latter adopted the name "Valanora". (Plutoni and Elves Security Forces drew 2-2 to open the group stages of WCoH 4.)

Comments:
1. bocky_boy: Okay, no question about it, at least one Fanboyist star. Stahlburg?
2. icebaby: See, it would have been better if the Braannurs had been better, so we could argue about what other people were referring to.
3. hawkeye: [1] Yeah. Flurian also. Maybe Spendral too? Though Maarks was good...
4. bocky_boy: Oh, phew, it's just a >_> up next. Never seen a >_> before but I think we should be able to handle this...right?
5. combatant94: Actually, yeah, we should. Surprisingly.

BEARS KEEP ROCKETS GROUNDED
Defence wins the day over Newmanistan
by Sven Magnusson

NEW CLEETHORPES, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST (TP) - So soon after eliminating the host nation, Toyur came up against another international favourite in Newmanistan. The Rockets have had a similar run to Toyur in gaining respect of the world's hockey elite, and thus it was almost fitting that the two sides met in the quarterfinals of the 12th World Cup of Hockey.

The quarterfinals is the stage that these two teams met in the previous edition of the World Cup of Hockey. A thrilling encounter ended in overtime, with Newmanistan, under the previous OT rules, prevailing over the Bears 6-4 on their way to a 4th place finish in the competition.

'We learned a lot from that game,' said head coach Viktor Brandin after the game. 'It was a tight game and we came up on the wrong end of it. This time around, we got the lead and managed to hang on to it.'

A scoreless first belied an exciting period, with the Rockets' Trevor Anderson hitting the post behind Patrik Dahlin, and Anders Mjallby just pushing Mattias Nylen's cross-crease pass wide of Michael Reid's goal. Both teams had two powerplays that they managed a shot each on per PP. It was a fairly even first period between the two evenly-matched teams.

The second period featured a pair of goals, both plays ending up with Michael Reid clearing the puck out of the back of his net. Toyur opened the scoring on the powerplay, after Kevin DeWolf took a holding penalty. After moving around the puck from corner to point, stretching the Rockets' penalty killers, Niklas Aspelin played a cross zonal pass to Niels Linderoth, who shot a deadly shot to the upper short side corner, just beating Reid to the post and giving the Bears the lead. Toyur doubled their lead minutes later, when Mats Hõlmqvist took an Olof Knutsson pass in stride going past the red line, and broke in on Reid uncontested, slipping the puck through his legs and giving Toyur a two-goal lead heading into the third period.

Newmanistan drew within one midway through the third, thanks to Matt Kalinski, but despite intense pressure on Patrik Dahlin's goal, the Rockets were unable to convert and Toyur moved into the semi-finals, avenging the OT loss in the previous World Cup of Hockey. Toyur now will take on defending champion and world number 1 Cassadaigua. The Cassadagans have had little trouble thus far in the tournament, and will provide Toyur's stiffest test, whilst Valanora take on Plutoni in the other semi-final. Both games will be on TSTV1.

"You know, I feel bad that the Calcuttas managed to defeat the team from Kelssek."

"Oh you do? Well why do you feel that way?"

"Well, if I am reading this right, Kelssek has recently discovered that is has elves of our own genetic strain living in their country."

"And this alone would make you wish them to progress ahead of our own team?"

"There is this new development but I also feel that the way the VSC treats hockey, as if it were just a back seat to football, that perhaps we do not deserve to be the dominant force of the sport, to be the standard bearer to which all other nations would try to strive to. When our own sporting council does not believe the sport to be a top rate event, then why should our nation be allowed to be great?"

"Do not confuse the actions and motives of individuals far removed from the competition itself to be the motives and feelings of a nation, lest I remind you of the continued success that the EHL has despite the same proportion of funding that the football leagues are provided for."

"So then you would favor populism over the defined practices of the appointed officials?"

"When you are appointed to a position rather than earning yourself to that role through the merit of your actions, you do not have the same sort of respect for the authority you are entitled to wield. Such is the case with most of the Sporting Council, appointed members of the Senate rather than members of the VFA or other sporting associations that worked their way to their position. Do not let their actions have you become disenchanted with the team, for even if the populace was not supportive, the team works just as hard to achieve their results as any of the other nations still left in the tournament."

"You speak the truth my friend."

"Truth that I hope puts your mind at ease."

"That it does, thank you for your guidance in this."

"We have been friends for hundreds of years, coworkers for over a decade, it was my pleasure to help you Telnath."

"It is good to see that our friendship continues to thrive good Falivir, the world could use more who value the friendship of a companion like you."

"That it could."

On reflection, Maarkus thought, it was the Plutonian's class that made the loss bearable.

Bearable, but not any less bitter. The team had played well, as well as anyone could in their situation, against a team ranked second in the world. A ten rank difference. Well, after this run, not so much, but still, one got the point.

After all, it wasn't often that one was simply out-classed like that. Despite their sprited play, Plutoni had simply been too good, to opportunistic, too much of a well-oiled machine of a team to lose here. That the Tide had scored on them at all was a testament to their own skill. The game had even been much more of a well-fought, close-fought thing than the score made it look, but the fact was that Plutoni had taken advantage of the opportunities they'd recieved far better and efficiently than the Fanboyists had.

Things had been made better by how the Plutonians had finished the game with class, not taking huge advantage of the empty net situation except to put the game away. And they hadn't bragged afterwards, simply ending with a post-game handshake and leaving the ice, happy and triumphant, but with class. For their part, the Fanboyists had wished them luck the rest of the way in the playoffs.

But that didn't stop the reality from hitting Maarkus as he stepped into the locker-room to start changing. As the inexorable fact struck him, he started to break down. He'd played his last World Cup of Hockey game.

He looked around the locker-room, eyes tearing up, and saw the same reaction from others. Dani, Honorius, Artie, Vaalhulm, Waalt, and others. There was bitter disappointment and sadness at the departure of their team-mates in the eyes of Theo and Kristin, Andrik, Joe, and Thomas, and the others that had decided to stay in exchange for renouncing any domestic league contracts.

Coach Smart stepped into the locker-room quietly, and knocked on a locker to get everyone's attention.

He gave a small, sad smile, and stated: "I'm proud of y'all. You made it farther than ever, and held your own against a two-time champion. There's no reason not to be proud. You made a mark out there. The Plutonian fans, I don't know if you noticed, were impressed by how y'all played. Think about that. You impressed the fans of the number two team in the world." He paused and added.

"It's back to work when we get back. I'll be seeing you all next year."

Puzzled, Maarkus raised a hand, like a school boy.

"But a lot of us can't come back. You heard about the ruling."

"The beauty of our country, Maarkus, is that wonders can be worked with a lacrosse and a gridiron coach on your side. Three coaches against the Federal Sporting Commission? No contest. The ruling was over-ruled by a standing regulation that takes priority; I, the coach, get to make personnel choices as to the team's members. Not the FSC. They can shove their hopes for running this team up their asses. If you all are willing to return for another year, you're free to come back."

There were cheers. Players shot to their feet, hugging each other, crying with relief, and laughing.

Well, for a moment at least. Then Maarkus, still the captain, called them all together.

"Well, then, I reckon we got our rallying call for next year. Something for the fans to shout whenever we take the ice. Shout it to the other team. I think y'all know what I'm talking about!"

"Next year...!"

The rest of the team bellowed. It was a time-honored Fanboyist cat-call against opponents.

"Those sorry bastards are fucked! Fucked!"

And it was back to work.

Plutoni ice hockey blog: WCoH 12, Semifinals
Inhuman rampage in second period

Matthew Wroder scored the first goal of Plutoni's semifinal showdown with Valanora to give Plutoni a one-goal lead. Forty-six minutes and fourteen seconds later, they won by one goal...but Wroder's shot had been overshadowed by an intervening flurry of action.

It was Amonion Galaethrin who tied the game for Valanora, 5:32 into the second period off a pass from captain Imenien Lithloth. Plutoni pulled ahead once again 8:03 in, with both Stefim Kalsy and Pensban Gamela assisting Mirsh Atzin. Smed Kubalee tacked on the third goal 11:49 into play, but Kuyem was penalized shortly afterwards for hooking Rindiruionion Naragalal. With Atzin checking hard throughout the period, it could have instigated a fight from other teams. Valanora, however, merely scored again through Lithloth.

The third period, in contrast, was relatively placid; Valanora sped throughout the rink, seeking to tie it up, but Plutoni held strong. They will face Toyur in the final in Kynythin.

Comments:
1. bocky_boy: As anticlimactic as this sounds, Wroder was arguably the star of the game.
2. aaaargh: Oh please, only if you want to argue for arguing's sake. Atzin, followed by Lithloth and maybe then Wroder.
3. icebaby: What else do we have the internets for?
4. official_blog_server: I beg your pardon.
5. combatant94: [3] Liveblog tomorrow maybe?

Toyurska Sportnyhet

A SILVER LINING
2nd place finish in WCoH shows off improving ice hockey programme
by Sven Magnusson

KYNYTHIN, QUINTESSENCE OF DUST (TP) - Minutes after Toyur left the ice amidst Plutoni celebrations of winning the World Cup of Hockey, Toyurska Ishockey Forbundet chairman Gunnar Stahlsson visited the silver medal winners in their spacious, luxurious Finntasia dressing room and personally congratulated each individual associated with the Grizzlies, from all-star to stick boy.

'Just a fantastic run,' Gunnar Stahlsson said outside the room after his closed-door meeting the the team. 'We played extremely well all tournament, and today we were just beaten by a better team. We were in it for most of the game but, just like last year with Newmanistan, hopefully we can take this experience into the next World Cup of Hockey and maybe win it next time.'

It was an air of nervy excitement that surrounded the Grizzlies after their 5-2 semi-final win over Cassadaigua. Two empty net goals increased the scoreline in what was a very close game, but Toyur were full-value for the win and looked to have all the momentum in the world going into the final against Plutoni. Conversely, Plutoni had ground out a tough 3-2 win over Valanora.

'Tough games win championships,' head coach Viktor Brandin said following the game. 'Plutoni has more experience than we do in grinding out results. The only game that we had to really grind something out of was the game with Quintessence of Dust, and I don't feel like we did a great job there either. The right team won the title today, and we'll take our second place finish and work on winning it next time around.'

Brandin will have plenty of time to work on it, as the new contract extension he signed with the TIF ensures that he probably won't need to worry about having a job for quite some time. Details have not been released, but he has had Toyur punching above their weight since they entered the hockey competition, and now that they will be amongst the elite teams for the next World Cup of Hockey, his challenge will be to maintain strong performances even when they are heavily favoured.

Other fallout from this edition of the World Cup of Hockey: The TIF, with approval from Emperor Kristian VII, have announced plans to build a brand new multi-purpose facility on the outskirts of Kristiansberg, with an emphasis on hockey, and the Finntasia facility in Kynythin will be the model on which it is designed. It is hard to imagine any way to improve on the design, but innovation is progress. Proposals will be presented in one month's time. Until next World Cup, then!

Plutoni ice hockey blog: WCoH 12, final
Liveblog

Well, I'm awake.

Comments:
1. combatant94: Aaagh. Me too, very sadly. And unwell, to boot. Go team?
...
12. blinky: Goal Plutoni! Flurian, assisted by Spendral and Pilshaft.
...
23. aaaargh: Penalty, Toyur...looks like #4. Defender.
24. hawkeye: [18] That's Tobias Nyquist.
25. blinky: Their defenders' uniform numbers look sort of organized. Can't say the same for the offesne.
26. hawkeye: Goal! Noklin, assisted by Kalsy and Kuyem.
...
32. flake: And Toyur are on the board. Niels Linderoth, assisted by Stefan Jansson and Jakob Hjerstedt...[25] is selling Toyur just a bit short. Nice goal, anyway.
...
41. aaaargh: 3-1!! Spendral with the goal.
42. flake: Goal! Amy Pilshaft relays to Smed Kubalee; Niklas Aspelin closes it down but quick pass over to Jofri Spendral who shoots to score. Less than six minutes, we can hold them...
43. flake: Oh, come on.
...
47. flake: They're pulling Dahlin now.
48. combatant94: Ow, my head. Well, at least we're winning.
49. hawkeye: Goal! Spendral again!
...
53. blinky: All right! Well done, team!!
54. combatant94: By the way, it looks like Cassadaigua won the third-place playoff...I'm not sure how Toyur's empty-net goals will affect this but I think Ostal still might win the dead guy memorial trophy. Dunno whether I'm prouder we have a good goalie or more frustrated that the trophy exists.
...
68. icebaby: Now that I think about it, this isn't even what is usually meant by a liveblog. Oh well.
