Team Mapletish For International Basketball Championships XVII
Nation Name : The Mapletia Unida Of Mapletish
Short Name : Mapletish Union,UM
Demonym: Maplish/Mapletian
Team Nickname: The Lions
The Supporters: The Fierykop

Head Coach: Ovidio Gualterio, 67
Gualteri is the current head coach of the Mapletish basketball national team, having played club and national basketball in his s playing career. As a player he was an all round point guard and shooting guard, known for his impressive layups and all round shooting ability. He is the current record holder of the highest three pointer shooting percentage at 63% in the MNBA. Despite his skillfulness, he was ruthlessly forced to retire early after a career ending elbow injury during an exhibition game pressurised him to pause his playing career. He attempted to restart his career as a free agent after the injury only for his injury to recur. He eventually retired officially a year later and started his coaching career. He was widely considered to be one of the best coaches in the MNBA. His career in Golden Phoenix, took him through all the club's teams and eventually managed to take on the head coach position. He took the team to three division championships and three playoff championships before taking the national team. He previously led the national team in the IBC 13.

Assistant Coach: Fidel Severino, 64
Severino was a former basketball player and current assistant coach of the Mapletish basketball national team. Previously he was the head coach of the Struggait University [STU] and won nine national titles in a twelve year stint with the STU, including winning six national titles won in a row. At his time at STU, he managed to overcome the dominance of the King's College in the basketball scene after winning a record of fifteen national titles in a row. His only experience as a player was only on the college/university level having never experienced professional basketball. He was included in the "List of talented basketball players who have never made it to the professional game".

The Dark Star Republic National Basketball Team

Team nickname: The Northern Stars
TLA: DSR
Uniform: Red with black stars

Head coaching triumverate: Elle Winterbottom, Donny Kirby, Caitlyn Fairchild

Squad:

#4 Oscar Pond (6’10”)
#5 Darren William (6’8”)
#6 Eli Jephson (7’0”)
#7 Buck Brook (6’8”)
#8 Gerrard Ford (6’4”)
#9 Jerome Peck (6’10”)
#10 Ross Roscoe (6’0”)
#11 William Alvey (7’0”)
#12 Earl Chapman (6’9”)
#13 Karissa Nielson (5’3”)
#14 Aston Westley (6’3”)
#15 Alex Ellsworth (6’1”)

Alex Ellsworth is a speedy slasher with a high field goal percentage for a point guard, but limited as a three point shooter and not known for gaudy assist totals. Karissa Nielson is an efficient shooting guard, whose exceptional career averages of 4+ AST/TO and 50/40/90 shooting are enough to overlook being a defensive liability. Gerrard Ford is a 3&D small forward whose outstanding wing defence typically sees him assigned to cover the opposition’s best outside shooter, though without being much an offensive force himself. Oscar Pond is a versatile power forward with a superb shooting touch, both from 3 and the free throw line, though his nickname is “Oscar Pon” – because there’s no D. Jerome Peck is a well-rounded centre, capable as a scorer and dominant as a defender, though poor at the free throw line. Coming off the bench, Ross Roscoe and Darren William are, like Ellsworth, more scoring combo guards than conventional pass-first point guards. Aston Westley is a specialist who offers 40% from 3 and little else. Eli Jephson is the most prolific shot blocker in the NBL. Buck Brook and William Alvey offer frontcourt defence and rebounding. Earl Chapman is a good passing centre.

Style modifier: +2

RP permissions: You can do whatever you want in terms of box score stats and on-court action, though I’d ask you try to bear in mind my basic player profiles. No deaths or severe injuries, no fighting or violence, no declaring war or general ridiculousness off-court. Please don’t use RL photos and say they are my players.

Nova Anglicana Lions National Basketball Team

Offensive Style: 4 Out, 1 In
Defensive Style: Aggressive
Style Modifier (if applicable): +2
Captain: Caleb Burns
Colors: Red and White Home, Blue and White Away
Arena: National Arena (doubles as hockey stadium)
Arena Location: Londinium
Arena Capacity: 14,000
Head Coach: Raymon Guidry
Assistant Coaches: Elmo Cardwell, Nick Goodman

Roster

Starters

G #3 Caleb Burns, 5'10, 30 - dished out a career-high 7.3 assists per game in NABA last year, decent jumper but real game is driving and dropping dimes
G #17 Dominic King, 6'2, 35 - Still the star of the team and former NABA MVP, King can shoot, handle, pass, and play D, just not as well as he used to
G #10 Danny Flowers, 6'3, 32 - improved defender, he can really pop the 3-ball, don't leave him open
F #41 Kelvin Braxton, 6'9, 26 - Braxton is a tremendous leaper, has the handles to play 3 or 4-spot, added bulk gets him the starting spot
C #44 Ibrahim Mbaraza, 7'2, 31 - Sudanese refugee is a defensive force, offense will never be truly elite, but adequate, will be tested in new starting role

Reserves
G #14 Rey Benavides, 6'4, 31 - Benavides does two things well: defend, and rebound, offensive game is weak
G #6 Clyde Pope, 6'1, 38 - backup PG knows exactly what to do at any moment, veteran presence extremely helpful off bench
G #12 Stephen Knight, 6'0, 32 - Knight is deadly jump shooter, still needs to work on his D
F #25 Cody Lewis, 6'6, 30 - fiery competitor, temper gets him in trouble, great outside shooter and defender, will see a lot of time
F #35 Alphonse DuBois, 6'8, 33 - DuBois is a banger, plays a physical defensive and offensive game, not afraid to throw his weight around
F #24 Bryan Conner, 6'7, 36 - Conner's back-to-the-basket game is somewhat limited, but he handles and shoots well for a forward, undersized

Playing Style

Nova Anglicana is not known for producing extremely tall players, and its young history means that they've had to take what they can get as far as athletes. As such, they've adopted a quick, aggressive, team rather than a particularly big one. Their three-guard lineup often means they are quicker than their opponents, but can be mismatched on the defensive end. Therefore, they play a variety of defenses, "junk" or otherwise. Their main defenses are man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup zone, but have been known to play a trapping 1-3-1, 3-2, or a box-and-one, with Flowers chasing the opposing team all over the court. With Mbaraza now the starting center, they'll probably rely more on that 2-3 matchup zone, as he is notoriously slow of foot. They also employ a 1-3-1 full-court press, with Mbaraza to play goalkeeper in the back. Their game relies on creating turnovers and turning them into points, so they run fairly often. When forced into a half-court situation, they used to dump the ball down to former captain Gary Hale and let him work, or try to draw their defenders out of the lane so that somebody can drive. With the retirement of Hale from international play and his replacement by Mbaraza, the low post game is going to be somewhat less emphasized. Look for them to try to get Mbaraza involved on alley-oops and other plays where he's less than five feet from the basket. Otherwise, the guards are going to have to pick up much of the scoring slack. They like to run the pick-and-pop with Conner, and will run Flowers off of multiple screens to get him open for threes.

This is Rhymencia's first IBL. Here you will find info about our players that you can use for your RPs. The RBF is relatively young, as you can see by the players ages that that the basketball league was founded about 15-20 years ago, and these were the first players to be trained extensively. Von Dixon is an athletic passer who can drive to the basket and pull up for three. He doesn't make many mistakes. Cordell Lively can get hot quick from deep, and is hustler on defense. He can shoot it from anywhere. Troy Dunn is mostly defensive. He doesn't need to do much scoring in his place for the offense. He is a terrific rebounder and on-ball defender, and shoots mostly around the basket. He has a developing 3-pointer that he has worked on recently. Darrell Moriarty is a faceup forward that provides aggressiveness around the basket. He is an aggressive that can also rebound and can make 3-pointers, if necessary. 75% of his shots are around the basket. Clifton Hopkins is a great defender, and a strong shot-blocker but a so-so scorer.

Notes

Prince Ioannes is the younger brother of King Petrus XX, the star quarterback for the Saintland National Gridiron Team and current King of Saintland. He is also the older brother of Prince Andreas, the former captain of the Saintland National Soccer Team. Prince Ioannes was the tallest of the sons of King Paulus XV, so he became a basketball player. He is already widely considered the best big man ever to play in Saintland's basketball league and he is the 3-time reigning league MVP. His only weakness is the 3-point shot. Although the Saintland National Basketball Team is often slow to get back on defense, Prince Ioannes is a great defensive player when he is in position. Axius is a good center, except for his poor shooting on foul shots. Sornatius is the newest addition to the team. He received a special accommodation from the University of Saintland, where he is a 3rd (final) year student, to play in this edition of the IBC. Sornatius is primarily a defensive specialist, who will see most of his minutes late in games when the Saintland National Team is trying to hold onto a lead. Basically, the Saintland National Basketball Team plays 1960s style basketball, with the center as the main scorer, but the other players will get shots throughout the course of a game. The arena's capacity is nearly the entire population of St. Petrus and the total population of Saintland is around 600 thousand. This team advanced to the Quarterfinals of IBC 12, where they were eliminated by the apple-tossers from Cassadaigua and finished 4th in IBC 13. In IBC 14, they went undefeated until the Semi-Finals, defeated Cassadaigua 2 out of 3 times in the Semis and were taken the full 5 games in the finals by a surprising Electrum team before they finally won their first IBC. While they struggled in IBC 15 and, at times, looked bored, they nonetheless managed to become the first repeat IBC champion since Sarzonia and finally secure that elusive #1 ranking. IBC 16 was more of the same, as the Sanctii became the first team to three-peat as IBC champions, in the process tying Sarzonia for the most IBC titles. Now, with the home court advantage, they are seeking a record 4th IBC title.

National Basketball Team of Electrum
National Team for International Basketball Championships 17

Management Team
Warren Jefferson - Head Coach - Strategy
Jack Allen - Assistant Coach - Offence
Paula Hobson - Assistant Coach - Counselor

History
Last year, 2014, has been an excellent year for the Electrumite basketball team. They had a breakout year in their very first tournament, the 14th edition of the International Basketball Championships in Cassadaigua. A debut team, which was heavily favoured to crash out and burn in the group stage, got through by the narrowest of margins, and had to face basketball powerweights before getting to the Championship series through hard work and dedication. They would face the Sanctii, a team to be reckoned with, and they nearly went the whole way in defeating them, but they narrowly lost the championship series 3-2, in the final Game 5. Then, in the second edition of the World Hoops Showcase, Electrum decided, along with Mizuyuki to host the tournament. Electrum enjoyed the home support and cruised through to the final, where they crushed Vyktory 2-0. Then, in the next tournament, the Olympics, the women's team did not make it past the group stage, but the men's team made it all the way to the final, scoring a gold medal for Electrum.

The next tournament was to be their pinnacle for the year. Electrum and Mizuyuki once again secured the hosting rights of the next edition of the IBC, IBC 15. As all matches were held in Electrum for the Electrumite team, they were under the pump the whole way through, with some disasterous losses to teams that nobody ever heard of. The kicker? They were eliminated in the final match day by some idiot chain of islands. That was their main opportunity to finally win THE basketball tournament at home, but they couldn't. Saintland would go on to win. Then, in a record, Electrum and Mizuyuki would host again for the third time (after newly elected Minister Nina Spring's initiative). Surprisingly, one of the foundation coaches, Scott Brown, defected to Super-Llamaland, dropping the coaching staff down to three. Unfortunately, yet again, Saintland would defeat Electrum, this time in a three match series, in the semifinals.

A basketball league has risen from the ashes of the former Collegial Basketball Association (which was initially used to select candidates for the IBC), with the professional competition in Electrum being called 'The Big Six' (the former locations of the universities, with two in Centralis, and an extra team formed in Port Grenville), meanwhile the basketball league has been renamed to the more boring University Basketball League. The roster is unchanged from last edition.

Centralis Herald - Sports Section - Editorial

A defense of the Casaran system

Instead of the heavily drawn out double-round-robin and three-match playoff series and a five-match final, like the last two editions hosted by Electrum and Mizuyuki, Saintland and the Royal Kingdom of Quebec have decided for a slightly more unorthodox format -- a Casaran style system for the first stage, a double elimination system for the second stage, and the traditional format for the semifinals and the final. We can not applaud them more for their hard work, and for managing to cut down on the amount of matches, which were deemed to be excessive by a lot of the staff here at the Centralis Herald.

Let's face it. Holding a tournament is extremely expensive. And it is even more so when, like in IBC 15, we hosted all of the matches, even those in the group stage. It was just a farce to see matches with already predetermined outcomes having to be played out again, and the tournament seemed to drag on and on. This new format, is different. Electrum will face eight different teams, each, set to be as competitive as possible, as teams with similar records go against each other. What this means is that each match gets progressively more competitive, and we usually see the top teams go against each other towards the end -- a huge plus for spectators, as they are guaranteed to see high-quality matches in the opening stage, and not very late into the finals.

Then, we see a pioneering double elimination format. To my knowledge, this is the only time that this has happened in a basketball tournament. Moreso, it is not a complete and utter failure, like we saw in the last WBC. Again, this ticks all the boxes. Finally, at the tail-end of the competition, where it matters most, the tournament reverts to the traditional format that we have come to expect, again, a good thing. We cannot applaud them more for their innovation, and we hope that this continues with other sporting tournaments into the future.

To some, Casaran is a dirty word. But what we say is that they are fearing the inevitable. That they are fearing the change which is bound to happen -- they are already used to the boring old format, and prefer predictability and sameness to something new and exciting. A lot of their arguments don't make sense if you think about it. Other than the traditionalist views, one criticism is that it is impossible to know which team you are going up against until the match before has being completed. We disagree. What we think is that teams should prepare against all teams, not just cater their style to specific teams, as it forces newbies to be more creative in their play, whilst the higher-ranked team, with more resources can use all of their energy in picking out the weak points of the other team with sophisticated technologies. We can't be bothered to list more supposed disadvantages, but you get the general gist.

Anyways, yeah. To sum up, Casaran is good.

Hispania y Filipinas National Basketball Team
Hispania y Filipinas Equipo Nacional de Baloncesto
Pambansang Koponang Pambasketbol ng Hispania y FIlipinas

Information
The popularity of basketball in Hispania y Filipinas is widesprad. However, there are no organized leagues yet, with groups of people playing just for leisure and fun. There were attempts to run a commercial league, with only a handful of companies taking part in the league. It eventually died down.

Walter Picaso Laganson "Walter", a basketball fanatic and owner of a chain of supermarkets in the capital Maniladrid, formed a team of players who he knew could take the sport of basketball to the next level. He also coaches the team, manages it, and cover their expenses.

Roster
CENTERS
STARTER - #24 Adan Calupig Gerpacio ("Adan") [Age: 28 Height: 2.13 m Race: Hispano-FIlipino Team: No affiliations]
The Hispano center from Barcebulona, Adan was called by Walter to play for the team, with the confidence that he will play good basketball at the paint. His main strength is his rebounding and hustle. However, he is very weak at perimeter shooting and usually overstays at the paint, accuring multiple instances of three second violations.

BENCH - #41 Amador Guira Zosa ("Amador Zosa") [Age: 31 Height: 2.08 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Tapped by Walter after seeing him play at numerous pistas (OOC: fiestas) , Amador Zosa is a proficient shooter, not common for a center or a power forward of his size. He would play beyond the perimeter on offense and guard the basket on the defensive end. Not much of a defensive stud, as he fails to swat shots most of the time due to his lack of athleticism. He can play stretch-4 and support Adan if Walter decides to rest their power forward.

RESERVE - #80 Aristeo Tampipi Gavieta ("Aristeo Gavieta") [Age: 23 Height 2.07 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Can play power forward, and usually would only play at the third quarter. Raw but has untapped potential, and is only one of a few Filipinos that possess an enormous height in their race. Walter saw him play at one of the paligas (league basketballs - usually inter-color) of his company. He works as a utilityman in Walter's supermarket.

POWER FORWARDS
STARTER - #4 Gerian Torralba Ulibarri ("Gerian Torralba") [Age: 25 Height 2.02 m Race: Hispano Team: No affiliations]
Talented power forward who can gobble most rebounds and loose ball situations. Can block the ball and alter shots. His big weakness is his tendency to be a foul magnet, and is usually taken out of play halfway through the first quarter. According to Walter, in his 24 paliga games that he watched, he was fouled out in 15 of them. However, in clutch situations, he could be a reliable defender and can tip in bricked shots with his immense vertical.

BENCH - #33 Lito Lumunsad Alapide ("Lito Alapide") [Age: 32 Height 1.97 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Usually the bench player for the power forward slot when Gerian Torralba hits the deck due to foul trouble. Is a dependable defender, but he does not score much other than put backs. He is also weak on the line, so he is the ideal man to foul on clutch situations. Only used in the second and third quarters. He is Walter's closest friend and helped build the team for the Hispano-FIlipinos.

SMALL FORWARDS
STARTER - #71 Inocencio Sebastian Najera ("Inocencio") [Age: 18 Height 1.98 m Race: Hispano Team: No affiliations]
The most talented player in the team. He scores, slashes, drives to the basket, and can shoot threes. The only problem he has is his liability on defense. He is always caught off position, and sometimes lost on the defensive rotation. He can however carry a team to victory on his own. Discovered by Walter while playing in one of the fiestas in Barcebulona.

BENCH - #92 Jobertson Buergo Tabilin ("Jobert") [Age: 29 Height 1.88 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Ten centimeters shorter than Inocencio, but has a wide wingspan, and can defend all positions. In an all defensive lineup, Walter employs this secret weapon in close situations, benching either Kris Galasinao or Inocencio.

SHOOTING GUARDS
STARTER - #3 Kristofer Galasinao Cervania ("Kris Galasinao") [Age: 31 Height 1.87 m Race: Hispano-Filipino Team: No affiliations]
The reliable captain of the team. A deadeye beyond the three point arc. His jumpers inside the arc are automatic when unguarded. He gets hot during tight situations or when the team is in a need of a spark plug on the scoring department. Walter told the media that Kris Galasinao trains shooting the ball six hours a day, including Sundays. Similar to Inocencio, his weakness is defense.

BENCH - #44 Clinton Decilio Araña ("Clinton Decilio") [Age: 22 Height 1.83 m Race: Hispano Team: No affiliations]
Defensive specialist. A pesky defender who can steal the ball well and avoid silly fouls. He only hits foul trouble once in every 20 games. He is deployed in court when the opponent's lead is large or the team is defending a precarious lead in the dying moments of a game. He is the husband of Walter's daughter.

RESERVE - #10 Tei Gumarang Tubojan ("Tei") [Age: 26 Height 1.80 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Can play point guard. Does not usually see action in court, and he rarely shows his stuff while inside the court. Walter though could have reasons for not fielding him during games, maybe a spot filler or he's just hiding his real talent.

POINT GUARDS
STARTER - #0 Beata Laganson Mondano ("Beata") (F) [Age: 20 Height 1.79 m Race: Hispana-Filipina Team: No affiliations]
The only female in the team. Reliable playmaker who depends on her agility and speed. She rarely cracks under pressure, and could also shoot the three. She can also defend 1 position players effectively. She is Walter's niece.

BENCH - #55 Moses Pucyutan Dionco ("Moses Dionco") [Age: 32 Height 1.75 m Race: Filipino Team: No affiliations]
Has the similar skillset as Beata, minus the three point shooting. He was Walter's supermarket supervisor before he went into playing full time for the team.

JERSEYS
Hispania y Filipinas has not contacted any sportswear provider for the jerseys, instead, Walter bought blue and white colored substandard jerseys (ones which can be found on a bargain price on supermarkets), numbered them with spray paint, and silkscreened the logo of the Coat of Arms of Hispania y Filipinas. The flag was embroidered, however. The primary jerseys are blue, while the secondary jerseys are white.

Background

The Wars for Independance that started late fall 483 ended the short venture of Bearded Moose into the world of sports. The series of battles which hit the nation in every darkest corner of its territory had a manifold of consequences. The one that tends to catch the eye the easiest was the political resolution, the foundation of a loose union of fifteen states, a Moosean union which hardly tied together the painful scars from the hostilities. The one that would drag on the longest were without any doubt the thousands and thousands of victims who were suffered across the country. The one that would determine the future of Bearded Moose the most was the bitterness which hung between the different states. As of today, spring 498, the future is an unwritten page but one with many black marks from the past on it. Each nation tries to resolve it at its best.

Nebosjic, the state with its endless hills pasted against the eastern border of Bearded Moose, has been amongst the more lucky participants of the war - in as far as such a thing is possible. While many states are still rebuilding their grounds, the fights didn’t touch the territory of Nebosjic, notwithstanding a few exceptions. It allowed this republic, lead now for nearly two decades by the conservative and beloved President Ante Zoranic, to be one of the first to get their business in order. The nearly four hundred thousand citizens can rely on one of the better state systems, even if the industry hasn’t picked up too well and the laws against religion have caused their upsets.

One element in which Nebosjic as a state has been a forerunner across the nation, only to be compared with states such as Pekkakill and Hafnisun, is the attention they have put into their educational system. Well aware that they are not fully making use of their proper economical sources - since there is plenty of metal to be found in the ground - which would be necessary for their survival as a semi-independent entity, Nebosjic invested in a series of Higher Technical Institutes to compliment the State University in Krazhdar, the capital of Nebosjic, and the Army Institute in Breljak. Every youth up the age of sixteen either joins the work force or, if seen fit for further education, starts a four-year master course. The very best get selected for a state-funded eight-year trajectory.

Hundreds of young men and women working hard for a grade and a future in a war-torn nation demanded an outlet and it were the high commands of the Army Institute who proposed sponsoring the sports for this. Especially the team sports, previously so shunned across the nation of Bearded Moose, were seen fitting. As place was a scarce resource on the newly-build campuses, basketball and handball were adopted as fitting. Of those two, basketball caught the hearts the most easily and the inter-HTI competition of 492 quickly rolled into a more state-wide competition fuelled by former students who not only learned maths, but also sports during their days.

Nebosjic, as a consequence, has an approximate thirty basketball clubs with the best ones still associated some way or another to the cities flocked by youngsters. If we look across the nation, there are groups of basketball players in Theodoropoulos, Ulekjaer, Lotharhem, Petrov and Andriyenko but none is so blooming as the one in Nebosjic with nearly a thousand affiliated players. For the record, interstate matches are of today still a thing of the future although teams from Andriyenko and Theodoropoulos have already attempted to contact the NSBO (Nebosjic State Basketball Organisation). No wonder that the first ones from Bearded Moose to venture back into the international sports scene are the daredevils from Nebosjic. What lies ahead of them is a question mark but they look forth to the confrontation with international standards.

Squad

The team will be led by manager Matija Darkovic and his assistant Veljko Lazaric. First Sergeant Darkovic was one of the first to support the basketball programme from the Army Institute and has been a staunch supporter ever since. He has been chosen by the NSBO not only for his knowledge of the game, but also for his militaristic point of view on man management, which was deemed fitting for guiding a group of young men on an unknown foreign mission. His assistant Lazaric is an early adopter who was too weak for the game itself, but a skilled tactician and counterpart to Darkovic.

1. - Point Guard - Damjan Todoric - Krazdar University - 19 y/o, 1m83

The youngest player of the starting squad, Todoric is notorious for his keen vision on the game and excellent passing. His shooting is not exceptional for a guard but he tends to make up for this with his great stamina and possibilities to allow teammates to score. A native from Krazdar who still studies accounting at the local university.

2. - Shooting Guard - Milenko Iljic - Borzdem Musketeers - 22 y/o, 1m94

This concrete R&D engineer is often considered the player who should cement this team. With his exceptionally long arms and splendid finishing, Iljic is the one who brings in the points. Brought his team domestically to an unofficial title and as a family man, has the audience at home behind him.

3. - Small Forward - Radoje Filipic - Warriors Breljak - 21 y/o, 1m99

Filipic is the kind of small forward with a strong shot from far out and excellent defensive skills, which probably ranked him above Zvezdanic for the difficult position of small forward. Currently in his compulsory military year, Radoje Filipic plays for the team from his casern city and has been a driving force for them.

4. - Power Forward - Blagoje Miladinic - Krazdar Rebellion - 24 y/o, 1m95

Even if Miladinic is relatively short for a power forward, he fulfils this role with great brio and style. Not afraid to ask the ball and get involved, this production assistant in the local fruit canning firm carries a lot of weight on his shoulders. Has a rather short way with words which doesn’t always work well with the refs.

5. - Centre - Vukota Draganic - Vujak Royals - 26 y/o, 2m05

With Miladinic in the team, the manager needed a tall and physical centre and Vukota Draganic is suited for this position. Looks a bit like a slow giant, is a bit of a slow giant but this physics teacher has an impact underneath the ring and a fine scoring average – for a slow giant. Good team player.

6. - Shooting Guard - Miroslav Vojislavic - Beltano Lions - 23 y/o, 2m01

Back-up for Iljic and more importantly an alternative in style, Vojislavic could serve well in games where there is very little space. The poor professionalism of this mechanical engineer makes his weak in terms of stamina but he has the ability to break open a game. Had the most points last season in the competition.

7. - Power Forward - Svetozar Miodragic - Warriors Loban - 29 y/o, 2m00

Sergeant and war veteran Miodragic is an exception to the general rule in the sense that he didn’t learn to play the game during his education but as the army were early adopters, Miodragic quickly picked it up. He’s very powerful and an active one when it comes to picking up those rebounds but moderately in terms of defence.

8. - Centre - Predemir Pavlic - Breljak Army Institute - 18 y/o, 2m08

This aspiring demining engineer has the full package to become the starting centre in the near future. He’s the tallest of them all and with an impressive physique, he’s a menace to defend. If he can add some more quality in terms of technical skills, he’ll be hard to stop. Right now more of an ace up the sleeve for the coach.

9. - Point Guard - Zeljko Stojanic - Borzdem Musketeers - 22 y/o, 1m86

Domestically, Stojanic forms the alpha to the omega which is Iljic. His reliable counterpart on and off the pitch, he keeps the overview. Working for a company in agricultural vehicles, he’s a working horse for the team and allows everyone to play better. Has proper shooting, but nothing too fancy.

10. - Small Forward - Cvijetin Zvezdanic - Warriors Loban - 24 y/o, 1m97

A small forward who is not afraid to infiltrate in enemy territory, this lieutenant forms an interesting alternative to Filipic. Tends to lose possession once too often for a starting role but can make the difference with his quick thinking and excellent shooting abilities. Along with Miladinic the most prone for faults.

11. - Guard - Uros Cedomiric - Poraljka HTI - 17 y/o, 1m79

The youngest and the shortest of the squad, this student was quite a surprise inclusion by Darkovic. Nonetheless, he already showed his splendid eye on the game and his courage during university games which makes Cedomiric one of the most promising talents in this squad. High scoring volume.

12. - Forward - Dusan Dragoljubic - Vujak Royals - 26 y/o, 2m02

A bit of an exception to the general rule, Dragoljubic never got into higher education. Nonetheless, this sympathetic welder has his spot in the group, not only for his good humour but for polyvalent skills on the court. Knows when and how to appear in the bucket and could serve as a stunt double for the centre position as well.

Hispania y Filipinas.

A country with 2,412,432 inhabitants. A mixture of Hispanic and Filipino culture from Maniladrid to Barcebulona, to Vigango. Many would say that their favorite sports are football and basketball. Actually, a national census on the citizens of Hispania y Filipinas showed that 50 percent of Hispano-Filipinos had basketball as their favorite sport, while 45 percent would say football. 5 percent said others, majority of which are punta cesta or jai-alai as their preferred sport.

The issue is that basketball is only played locally, and no national league has been established to develop players in the nation. For years, when Hispano-Filipinos are asked on whether the nation could compete in the International Basketball Championships, the first thing that comes into mind is... "What the hell is that competition?"

Walter Picaso Laganson, also known as Walter, had other ideas. He had watched the previous four editions of the IBC, watching Cassadaigua and Saintland win the tournaments, with the latter winning a three-peat. He envisioned that this nation could hoist that trophy in the future. But first, he had to build his team.

Walter is an owner of a chain of supermarkets in Maniladrid and other locations around the nation. He had the money to build the team. At first, he thought he could go to the Ministry of Sports and request for funding of the team, but the administrator said, "We aren't interested yet in entering international tournaments."

Walter was enraged by the ignorance of the ministry, knowing the corruption behind the scenes of the different ministries of the kingdom. He sought help from his friends, and colleagues. After one month, they raised the money they need to file registration papers for the tournament.

Now that they had secured a spot in the tournament, it was time to find players...

Leimar has had enough.

After a dismal performance by the Angas Barangay in which they failed to make the knockout stages of the last IBC, he decided to release the players back to their basketball clubs. He proposed a way to enter a new team for the tournament: pick the fresh graduates from the BUCIASAA schools - especially the former NSCAA champions, the Yonaba University Samurai.

The KPMB asked Leimar, "Why?" He answered:

"I want to develop players from the college level straight to the national team. That they won't have club commitments. I and my coaching staff would do our best to develop these players - we could play them abroad in multiple tournaments, and bootcamps, to hone their skills. Surely, that will cost much, but it is for the better for the game."

The council scrutinized the proposal of Leimar, but it was approved after days of deliberation by the KPMB and the Gran Supremo - but with consequences: the Angas should win at least one IBC for four editions, or he will be fired and his players would be released.

"Well, four IBC editions is enough. We can bring home the bacon."

He had gathered players from different colleges - the tall and dependable Carrol Villaruel and the powerful Byncel Domindiano. Hiel Bulayugan, the star forward, and the shooting duo of Jomer Adapon and Albert Sol Cruz. With other college stars filling up the team slots, Leimar had just one remark before the team flies to the Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

"Game on."

Kaboomlandia to play Taeshan in First-Ever Basketball Game

Kaboomlandia's basketball team will take to the court later today to play Taeshan, the No. 14-ranked team in the world. Our interviewer caught up with player Michael Buckner earlier this morning to ask him about the pressure. Buckner replied that there really wasn't any pressure on them, and that they didn't really have expectations. The most talented player on the team is considered to be 7'1" Jorge Carpenter, a centre.

"Why must we visit Saintland, Holy Shop Owner?"
"Because we were drawn to by some Sanctii leader."
"Well, we better go to Quebec after the tournament."
"Yes, you are correct."
"Well, there is some Sanctii supporters back home."
"What? Kill them!!!"
"I told your brother to do just that."
"The game vs Abaja... I'm coach."
"Some other Unranked team, it seems."
"Thank goodness it is."

Two big events are on tap for our Zhenherribaean faithful. And basketball fans may be forgiven for wondering why the excess of riches here-and-now. For the organizers of the City of Zhenherribae Sports Festival, kicking off later in the week, had basketball in the schedule at the same time as the 17th International Basketball Championships in Saintland.

Needless to say, we have a "B" team playing at home. It's resulted in more players earning caps, but it also lessens the fan appeal of the festival matches.

But the "A" team looks promising for a group of world championship debutants. I'm a big fan of low-post stalwart Kjartan Gestsson from Berserkir, and somehow it just seems right that he's wearing 33 for our red, gold, and green. Other players to watch include Fāng Jiànshùn setting up the offense as a giant point guard, big man's power with an incredibly deft passing touch and a gift for quick reads, and Valur's heartthrob star guard Olgeir Baldvinsson coming off the bench as sixth man. He's been on a tear of late.

The tournament uses the so-called Casaran system in qualifying, also called Swiss or Kopavogur Method in other parts of the world. It's a system where teams of similar record are matched each round. The big advantage is that more teams play more even-up matches and competition for qualification gets fierce. A prime disadvantage for journalists and home fans is that the next round opponent isn't known until the present round ends, making projections and ticketing plans hard.

But we do know that we open against #15 Vettrera, a good enough team to measure ourselves against but not so powerful as to be a mismatch for our debut. We hope.
