Fatigued Virabi Team Still able to hold Jesselton to a draw

Jesselton 2 - Shari ('30,'48)
Venue: Metall Staadion, Rig, Somewhereistonia
Attendance: 60,431
Kickoff Time: 11:00 WRST (West Rushmori Standard Time)

Substitutions: (In/Out)
[i]VIRABIA: Soroka/Brown ('73), Fransisco/Kurtz ('73), Sanches Gaona/Nomsky ('84)
[i]JESSELTON: Hamizi/Santo ('87)
(This game marked Rudolfo Brown's first cap)

RIG - In just under a year, Virabi football has gone through some major transformations. Never was it imagined that the Nats' would be playing in two tournaments at once. However, that's the case and it's proven to be tough as over the past few days the team has done nothing but play football and fly back and forth between Somewhereistonia and Virabia. Luckily for them it's a short flight, because Virabia will need all they can get if they can hope to be successful in two competitions.

The bigger of the two competitions is the Cup of Harmony and for their opening game against Jesselton the team did quite well as they were able hold them to a 2-2 draw. Manager Caldas attributed this to a strong midfield who were able to stop alot of the Jesseltonian attacks in the second half. However, the game wasn't all roses for Virabia as throughout the first half it was up to Max Wilson to singlehandedly stop many of Jesselton's attacks. He was able to do it, but eventually his luck with saves ran out and he found himself unable to get to a strike from Shari, thus giving Jesselton a 1-0 lead that they would keep through halftime and into the 48th minute where Shari ended up scoring a second goal.

This new lead didn't last long, however, as in the 53rd minute Jake Soroka scored his second international goal. After this, Virabia slowly began to find some offensive success as there were quite a few good shots on goal however none of them made it. At least until the 88th minute when Leas (formerly of the Caps') striker Marty Conquest was able to head a well placed ball into the back of the net.

The remainder of the game was short and didn't have anything noteworthy, aside from a red card to Ron Bass because he argued with the ref over a standard booking, rather violently. By this we mean, he pushed the ref to the ground which, in anyones mind is enough for a red. Despite that, Virabia was still able to earn a draw and are going into their next match against South Norwega, who found themselves on the losing end of a match with Toiletdonia. If Virabia has any hoped of progressing they must win.

"But it's very true. We're in a rebuilding phase and it's just as well we had a big shock like this failure to qualify because there has to be a spark to make big changes to the national side, and getting an elf or two to play would definitely work." said Mikhail. He was also quite impressed by the juiciness of the meat and said so.

"Thanks."

"Did you hunt these down, then?"

"Of course. I had to look for a butcher's." Davís said dryly.

"Yeah, plenty of cows wandering around the provincial parks." chipped in Galain.

"Hey, for all I know," Mikhail laughed, throwing his hands up. "Why'd you put them in the oven, though? Cause I'd thought you grilled them."

"It's this way of doing them that I just read about on the Internet the other day. I used to botch steaks horribly, but then I saw this thing and it worked. You preheat the oven to maybe 200 Celsius, then turn the heat off. You sear the outside of the meat, like you're going to cook it normally on the frying pan, but just like maybe three minutes each side. Then you pop it in the oven for like ten, fifteen minutes. Comes out perfect."

A couple of minutes of frenzied cutting and chewing followed.

"So what do you reckon our chances of getting an eryedhel onto the Kelssek national team?" Davís asked, breaking the silence.

"Are you guys technically citizens, then?" Mikhail asked.

"Yes, we are," said Davís. "Well, if you were born in Eryn Firith after 1 July 1889, which is when Kelssek actually legally started to exist. You have to do some paperwork if you were born before that, but we're entitled to citizenship and passports just like the rest of you. My brother had to do that, he was born 1888, the silly git. Just a minor hitch in the bureaucracy, though."

Not for the first time Mikhail had to remind himself that though these two elves behaved and spoke like rather mature university students, they were at least twice his age.

"Also, it's hell trying to get the post out in Deinárather." noted Galain. "Nearest post box is on the provincial highway, which is a good two hours from the dar."

"Well, never mind that, Galain, would there be anyone both good enough and interested?" Davís asked.

"Could be, if we actually went to some of the organised places and looked 'round. Don't you know anyone? Like one of your friends from back in Dein d'Abhide?" said Galain.

"I could ask them, but the guys who might be good enough players... I don't really think they'd fit into the side very well. We need players who're comfortable with the humans. No offence intended, Mikhail."

Mikhail accepted this without comment, deciding to just see this as part of the pattern of incidental, inconsequential, back-and-forth racism that marked many encounters one had when living in the intensely multicultural city of Kirkenes.

"In any event, we'd need to physically go to Eryn Firith." Davís added. "Would you be game for that, Mikhail? You know the national team set-up, and you know what any players would need to succeed."

"Sure. It'd be fun."

"It will be a long journey, though." warned Davís.

"Awww Noranthia, I'm not taking the damned bus all the way to Alavaria again." Galain moaned.

"No, I have an open plane ticket anyway, but I meant after we take a plane and have to..." Davís stopped short. "Can you ride a horse, Mikhail?"

"Never had the chance to, unfortunately."

"Well, it's not that hard to pick up, and you'll be with us. You'll pick it up on the way. Have you got any camping gear? It'll be two... well, probably three nights before we reach Agarandar."

[OOC: I really did make a similar recent discovery about cooking bits of tasty sacred animal, and would totally reccomend you try that.]

Unitopolis got their debut Cup of Harmony campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Blaumen Empire, courtesy of a Corenhinho goal. Manager Aleksandr Zukov had demanded a win from his team in the pre-match press conference and they performed superbly.
Shot after shot rained down on the Blaumen goal and if not for the aerobics of their keeper Giuseppe Joliano could have had a hat-trick. it was Joliano who created the only goal of the match, with a low, powerful cross into the six yard box that Corenhinho only had to tap for his 23rd goal in a Unitopolis shirt.
Unitopolis relaxed a little in the second half, and Frederick Paolito came on for Giuseppe Joliano. All in all, a great start for Aleksandr Zukov's men, and hopefully we're on our way to the second round.

The match against Andrewboy ended, predictably, in a draw. However, what nobody could have predicted was the bizarre nature in which the Firebirds' goal came. Inexplicably, the Osarian goalkeeper scored, after being set up by a centre back!

In what appeared to be a moment of madness, goalkeeper Albert Mariana decided to come forward. It wasn't late in the game, and the team were not losing. On the touchline, there were looks of horror from both Roberto Barzaglione and Giorgio Cassetti. Benedict di Corradi merely looked quizzical, as he watched his usually reliable and level-headed custodian roam out of his area and jog forward.

The ball at his feet, Mariana played a short ball to Orelin, who gestured back toward goal as he turned to play the ball into the feet of captain Jermain Lewis. Seeing Mariana had continued forward, Orelin dropped back. Sweeper Reiss Ryerson had been forward, and he came deep to collect the ball as Lewis moved forward. Mariana continued advancing forward, outside the two middle men, who played a quick one-two to beat Laron. Then, with a sudden burst of speed, perhaps aided by the momentary confusion of opponent and teammate alike, Mariana sprinted toward the gap between Manson and Bermon. Ryerson, showing impeccable composure given the circumstances, threaded a perfectly weighted ball through, and Mariana slotted coolly past Getabe!

It might not have won us the match - as Mariana could only tip Johnson's brilliant volley onto the post five minutes later, and the rebound fell to Burton, who predictably scored - but it will certainly go down in history as perhaps the most incredible goal ever seen by an Osarian player in international competition.

The rest of the match was effectively back and forth stuff, with few real chances created - like the first half had been - and both teams went home with a point, seemingly having been content to do so. Aside from Mariana's shocker, the most notable thing about the match, though - from an Osarian perspective - was the return of Jermain Lewis. Lewis was back to his imperious best, and he looked absolutely brilliant again. While he didn't make many killer passes, or take many shots, his impact on the game was easily noticeable. There was something solid about the Osarius midfield that just had not been there during qualifying, when the captain was struggling to cope with the absence - and feared death - of his mentor. Good news for Osarius heading into their second match.

However, the next time the Firebirds took the field, things were a little less impressive. Against Cosumar, it was the general consensus that Osarius would emerge victorious, and until the 75th minute, it looked as though this would be the case. After having taken the lead through a spectacular 28-yard Benni Watson free kick in the 37th minute, and doubling their lead through a Calvin Harris bullet header in the 59th (the cross perfect, supplied by Watson), Osarius looked to be cruising, although not playing particularly well.

In retrospect, there had been signs that Cosumar may have been capable of an upset. But when you're leading a team you are supposed to be leading, and on course to beat a team you are supposed to beat, you tend to dismiss flashes of brilliance as just that - a flash of brilliance, nothing more. The next flash of brilliance, however, halved the deficit. An uncharacteristic error from Ryerson put Gidds under pressure against a quicker, younger forward. There would only be one winner in that race, and in a one-on-one, Mariana could only do so much.

So we conceded. It was the seventy-second minute and we slipped up. So far that had been their only real chance. Nothing to worry about, right?

Wrong.

Three minutes later, Cosumar executed a stunning play, carving through the Firebirds' defensive teaming of Orelin and Ryerson, before pushing left (right for us) and attacking Jay Jay Anderson. Benni Watson didnt get back quickly enough to help the big man out, and that was the small opening needed. The cross floated in, and with Ryerson tracking an attacker running back, facing goal, Gidds was left to challenge the striker. Four years ago, maybe Gidds would have won the contest. Not this time. Again, nothing Mariana could do about the goal, a brilliant glancing header into the bottom right corner.

With fifteen minutes to go, we saw the Firebirds get increasingly desperate, knowing that anything less than three points here would likely see them fail to qualify (again), as it would surely be harder to pick up points against Kosovoe and Albundania. Unfortunately, they were made to pay for their four minute lapse, and threw away two points to a determined Cosumar side.

Next up for Osarius will be Albundania, who cruised to a 3-0 win over Cosumar on matchday one. It promises to be a difficult matchup, as we know from seeing Lemanskigrad United in the BFL, as well as our previous encounters with the Ebyrian nation. However, our 3-2 victory over them away in a friendly suggests that we are still capable of a win, no matter how much the odds are against us.

Andrewboy a disgrace

Summary
In matchday 2, Andrewboy played against Kosovoe. with matches against Cosmar and Albundania coming up, Andrewboy desperately need points if they hope to have a chance of sneaking a spot in the second round.

Match
Code: Select all
Kosovoe:3                       Andrewboy:0
Stebban 22nd
Myers 63erd
Lafeyette 86th

A disgraceful performance from Andrewboy. Horrible play from several of our players. Kosovoe dominated from the first minute, and in the 22end Fitzgerlad made a great run down the wing and hit a long ball pats the middle of the box by Stebban controlled it on the left-central edge of the box and volleyed it home at the top near corner. Kosovoe played more laid back after that, but Andrewboy's horrible play allowed them a second goal in the 2end half, with Lafeyette playing a through ball, Lafeyette's shot was blocked then Myers slammed a low shot into the right bottom corner from 17 yards. More defensive play followed that. Andrewboy managed one half chances from a free kick in the 80th but it came to nothing and in the 86th Kosovoe struck again from the penalty spot with Lafeyette sending Getabe the wrong way.

CUP OF HARMONY 43 - Boring draw for Valladares

FROZEN ON THE PITCH

OAKÓW, SOMEWHEREISTONIA (VP) - Valladares and Unitopolis shared the points with a 0-0 draw in an intense match with few scoring opportunities that opened the action for Le Tricolore in Group 4 of the Cup of Harmony 43, held yesterday at Hiiu Staadion in Oaków, Somewhereistonia.

Neither team was lavished on offense in the first half, although Valladares had the best options. Firmly planted on the field, both teams showed their physical strength and canceled themselves. Paulo Oliveira tried to find the back of his rivals with his speed, but the clearest opportunity came from the boots of Hugo Ruiz, who with a very strong shot from more than 25 meters shook the Unitopian goal post. Unitopolis barely managed to surprise Luis Fuentes, the valladar goalkeeper. Their most dangerous approaches were made from free kicks and a cross shot from Corenhinho, which went grazing the crossbar.

Late in the second half, and given that the situation was unlikely to improve, the valladar coach Alexander Pereira decided to move the bench. He resorted to Ronald Moulin to give more options to his team for the band. There was a good center from Armando Rivas, but Jason Paul, the Unitopian goalkeeper, was able to block the goal option of Oliveira.

With Jefferson Ospina disappeared and heavily marked by the Unitopian defense, Moulin gave some mobility to the valladar right wing, from where the valladar players created good centers, but missed by the strikers. However, Unitopolis could still unbalance the score at 90', in an internment in which, after being face to face with the goalkeeper, Rob Van Muir opted for a bad center through the area without any companion arriving to push the score.

During the last minutes, both sides continued without getting hurt. The Unitopians rushed, with more heart than head, in injury time, but didn't found the road. The balance of just 10 shots on goal throughout the game speaks for itself...

The valladar coach, Alexander Pereira, was disappointed by the result. "We could win this match. During the first half, we created more options than them, and we could go to the halftime with one or two goals up in the score. But that's the football, and if you don't score all of your options, there's nothing you can do." With this disappointing draw, Valladares got their first point in the Group 4 of the Cup of Harmony 43. Next, Le Tricolore will face Tarrentum, who are coming to this match with two points after a draw with Blouman Empire.

Royal Khytenna news

Late hat trick goals defeats khytenna
Kelssek 3
Brodif 85th 88th 90+1

Khytenna 0

The six islands didn’t get the start they wanted last night as Khytenna, who played great in the first half, got a shock defeat when Brodif scored 3 late goals that made all the khytenna’s work go to waste.

Brodif, who would be the undoing of khytenna, proved to be hard work in the first half as he made an early chance towards goal in the 6thminute; he got into the box, beating many defenders, to get close to the keeper, an easy chance that he put wide. Khytenna came back strong with some fast paced football, Keogh-Green and Carmichael really worked well together in the centre of the pitch, but Keogh-Green did try to make some shots, putting them wide when he should of been passing, his international inexperience was starting to show, but he set up to be one of the best chance of Khytenna’s first half. A cross from Thorne across the box, instead of shooting, Keogh-Green made a quick past to an open Syd, heading towards goal, somehow he hit the post and the keeper stopped it going in. Firestone had a run into box but the shot he made was stopped dead by the keeper. With the first half over, Khytenna was looking for an upset.

The Second half was delayed due to a large number of Seaguls that came onto the pitch, during this time, Allan Syd was subbed of for Pellett as he felt that he may have an injury. Also Pittenger came on for Ringwood. The second half started well for khytenna, getting the ball up field and Challenging the keeper. Firestone had a good shot at goal in the 67th minute as he made a run in the box had a shot but was denied by the post. Carmichael made a fantastic curling shot as well, just went over the crossbar (although Throne protested that it was tapped over by the keeper). The real shock for khytenna came in the 85th minute as a cross by Sinclair was headed in by an unmarked Brodif. A complete shock for khytenna, it was so late into the game Khytenna just couldn’t get back into it. Khytenna then had another lapse of concentration when a pass from Dunstan to Carmichael was intercepted by Brodif making his second, and practically ending the game for khytenna. Sinclair was then brought down in the box in injury time, and Brodif scored the penalty to make it 3-0.

A disappointing end to what was a great match for khytenna, they will looking for vast improvements in their next game if they want to continue forward.

Allan Syd has been left out of the next game after injury worries, he is replaced by Pellett and Ryan Hytan comes on the bench.

Khytenna 1-2 Lithatrius

Khytenna again played Very well against a decent hard working side. Firestone got a fantatic well worked goal just before half time, some quick one touch passes between Keogh-Green and Carmichael opened up the Lithatrius defence it was a just a quick through ball by Carmichael and Firestone with his pace and skill did the rest calmly putting it passed the keeper. Khytenna played well thoughout the second half making decent chances, but again like against Kelssek, let in goals in the late minutes, handing Lithatrius the win. Khytenna need to work on their stamina, and will be searching for a win in there next game.

La Verdad

Draw for "consistent" Aguazul

The national football team drew with Bisgea, surprising leaders of Group 1 after two matchdays. "We'd been drawing a lot of games, particularly with teams that weren't expected to do very well, in the qualifiers," Pelayo Sortani reminded us. "But now, even with the new players in the starting lineup...you know, the world's a volatile place, lots of change, but we're consistent. It's important to have something to rely on."

Bisgea took the lead in the nineteenth minute, with a left wing setting up a forward to score. Aguazul equalized through Alvaro Sáez, who converted a short tap from Gerardo Riquelme in minute 35. Chago Villalobos and an opposing midfielder both received yellow cards in the first half, but the intermittent set pieces didn't lead to any goals.

Bisgea scored again in minute 52, with a different forward sending Vedillo Bazán the wrong way. It would take Chale Cobarrubias to pull even once again, with Gunsedal Cisneros setting him up in minute 68. To the frustration of the stadium announcer, Juan Esteban Oraglio came on for José Manuel Poblano to make a more attacking formation, but Aguazul were unable to secure the win.

"No matter what else goes on, we're the same old team," said Sortani. "Hey, we beat Kelssek twice in the [World Cup 50] qualifiers. Same old, same old should be in store."

Karazaua At Home

KHALOON, QUEER POCO EL MONO ARA - Zarbli achieved its first victory in the Cup of Harmony yesterday, a 3-1 score against Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, in an amazing match of Livia Karazaua. The VLC FC striker scored 2 of the Zarblese goals and passed the ball for Bandebola Norman score the third.

As the match started, you could already Karazaua would have a better day than she has had in the first match, as she hit the Sea Dragons goalkeeper Emyle Triarii's left post after a quick change of passes with Jenio Aladin. She then scored the first after Jenjis Kan crossing for Norman's head, which made Triarii perform a beautiful defense, but led the ball right to her right and deadly foot. 1-0.

The second goal came in a play by Migelito Treta, who ran with the ball crossing almost all of the right side of the field and passed for Karazaua in the edge of the penalty area. The striker then saw Norman entering the area and crossed to his head, and this time Triarii wasn't able to catch. 2-0, and the team looked more confident than ever.

The Adrossan side came back better for the second time, threatening the Senatus Populeske's goal a few times before finally piercing through Zarblese defense. The exchange of passes between Rainu Irin’lur, Jahirii Tai’Seri and Calif Atain’i made Zarblese defenders look like children looking for their mothers in a packed shopping mall, and in the end Tai’Seri ended face to face with Populeske, who wasn't able of doing anything. 2-1.

Coach Senior Miagi saw that the team was losing it and decided to perform 2 changes at once: Livio Titus and Liko Alieno for Hank Fera and Tito Livius. These changes made the difference, as the new Romans midfielder, used to play with Aladin, was a crucial part on the play that resulted in Mace Kinoz’gh hiting Norman inside the area. Even though the Sea Dragons defender complained boldly to the referee, it was a penalty kick for Zarbli, and Karazaua took the ball on her arms as if it belonged to her. An impossible shot for Triarii to defend. 3-1, and it was set.

Coach Miagi said after the game that he was very pleased with Zarbli's performance in this match, but not to get ahead of ourselves. "Even though it was good, we are still in matchday 2 and we have a very hard match against Somewhereistonia in a couple of days". If the team, specially Karazaua, keeps playing like this, we can expect them to be tough opponents to everyone. And if that is so, even if they lose, it will make everyone in Zarbli proud.

Zarbli: Populeske; Treta, Uindsor, Titus (Fera) and Afrikanus; Ualase, Alieno (Livius), Aladin and Kan; Karazaua and Norman (Otehiveu)
Andossa Se Mitrin Vega: Triarii; Gha’voru, Kinoz’gh (N’gi), K. Umafu’alafa and T. Umafu’alafa; Zuhka, Azur, Kai (Wu’eres) and Atain’i; Irin’lur (Cirgha) and Tai’Seri
Goals: Karazaua (17' and 79') and Norman (32') for Zarbli; Tai’Seri (55') for Andossa Se Mitrin Vega

Unicorns Suck For Now

My Queen,

The Cup of Harmony has been rather a disappointment after entering competition with such high hopes. The squad seems to be in complete disarray at the moment - but perhaps some of that is due to our announcement that we will be restructuring the squad before the World Cup 52 qualifiers.

Were The Ursine Northlands were our first opponent and we really had trouble adjusting to the size and style of play of our competition who really put it to us for the entire match. The 2-0 scoreline reflected just how poorly we played.

Novikov was the second opponent and should have been a much easier task, but yet again we failed to show up mentally and lost a very tough 1-0 match that we should have taken three points with. Now we sit at the bottom of the group with two matches to go. Both are must wins if the Unicorns if we hope to advance.

Hopefully the next match will be much better for us.

Your humble servant,
Khyber

CUP OF HARMONY 43 - Whirl Islands defeated the top seed in Group 6 (again)

STROKE TO UIRI

RIDGEMONT, QUEER POCO EL MONO ARA (WIP) - The Islanders were one of the big surprises in Matchday 2 of the Cup of Harmony 43 after beating Uiri 1-0 in the debut of both in the competition. The match, valid for Group 6, was played yesterday at St Valerie's Stadium in Ridgemont.

Conally Jones scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute. With this victory, Whirl Islands managed to dispel almost every doubt created after the opening match in the group, where the Islanders scored a late goal to hold F1-Insanity to a draw. This victory over Uiri helps the Islanders to take the second place in the group at the moment, with 4 points. F1-Insanity leads with the same points, but with two more goals scored than the Islanders. Senzymnia were dropped from first to third place in the group with a 3-0 loss to the new leaders, while Uiri and Swartaz have not got any points, both having lost their first match.

Whirl Islands will have a bye day in the next matchday, before starting to assure their place in the next round in the match against Senzymnia in Khaldoon. A victory against them would increase the Islanders' options to make it to the next round in this Cup of Harmony.

Two victories for Silver Beach, in first place!!

As you all saw on SBBC, Silver Beach defeated the host, Somewhereistonia, in a 2-0 victory, to reaffirm their first place position. In the first half of this upset by Silver Beach, they played brilliant defense, and the opponents, even with the low number of Silverian fans(500), they still could not get going. They were dominant on defense, allowing two shots, both not on target, though the second shot went just wide. Dustin Green was happy, and Noah Gillespie was having a man of the match type game.

In the second half though, it was all Charles Stando, and he showed why he was the captain of this upcoming squad. He got the ball in the corner, and dribbled around for a bit, before he got enough space to cross it. It was deflected out for a corner. On the ensuing corner kick, in the 55th minute, Charles Stando took the corner, and Gillespie headed it in for a goal. The place went completely silent, except for the Silverian fans in the top left hand corner, which went nuts. The crowd was virtually silent for the rest of the match, as Silver Beach controlled possesion of the ball for most of the match. In the 79th minute, Gillespie was fouled, so Jacob Jenkins, the rising star, took a free kick. He struck it hard, and... GOAL!!!!!! He curved it in to the bottom left hand corner, to make it 2-0, and the Silverian fans went crazy AGAIN. They were just so strong in the back for the rest of the match, as they only had one shot on target the entire match, and that was straight to the keeper. Gillespie was named man of the match, for stopping their wingers, and scoring goals. We will be here next time, when Silver Beach play again, and hopefully clinch qualification for the knockouts.

"Yeah but Jesselton are a good team so losing to them is fine right?" said Tota. Milak muttered something.

"If we draw then we are assured qualification basically and that we beat Virabia as well." Said Milak.

Well it wasn't the best of matches to go to. We took our Toiletdonian flushers. They are really noisy and play the sound of a Toilet flush and really put foreigners off. We watched them play but it wasn't a good game. Still the kids made a hell of a lot of noise. It was still a fun game. The Toiletdonian crowd was loud with our singing. They sung every Toiletdonian song and the Pasagans were really put off. It wasn't until the second half that we had a couple of shots from Milak. He's always good but we need more than that. We need a new manager and some other stuff but Toiletdonia has always been a nation to struggle through. At the end of the game though we headed off to our hotel but Somewhereastonia isn't nicest of places at night. We nearly got lost and it doesn't help if your a bit drunk. We found it in the end but not after I was robbed. I think that this won't be our year seriously.I think we might make to the knock-outs but no further. As it happens it looks like what will happen for our new manager is someone will step in. A new manager could still appear but I doubt it. I look forward to our next game though. Next time we have a bye then I think it is Jesselton.

The way the boys played so far I can't see a lot happening. It was a good game the first one fun to watch but a bit tense. I think we can draw with Jesselton they are a big team but they aren't re-known for good luck. I think we can beat them maybe with some good luck. We hope we can do this but I never know. Jesselton are a good team and this game shouldn't be taken light heartedly good luck you Toilets come on!
