I realize there are many different outlooks on this issue, so if your views do not align precisely with one of the options, feel free to specify in a reply.
I think the fact that some (primarily younger generations) do not consider it an insult reflects a woeful ignorance of the culture of suppression, humiliation and violence against blacks that was very strong in the United States until just a few decades ago, and still lingers today. People who fling the word around in everyday banter, or online, should have a little more respect for the gravity of the word and the ugly tradition it espouses. As someone else said above, just because you personally don't see it as offensive doesn't mean others will be able to overlook its weight so easily.

So, because the minority of people find it offensive, the majority should suffer?

I think it is wrong for ANYONE to use that word, and I consider it to be worse than the F-bomb. It is impolite, racist, and antagonizing, whether it ends with a -er or -a, or used in common conversations between people of the same race or different race.
But what makes it even more bad, is the use in pop culture. I can't believe that we allow this slander to be used in public, especially aimed at teens and adolescence in songs, movies, and literature. I can understand if it is used in historical context; ex) 12 years a slave, Selma, or Huckleberry Finn because that is when the word was used, and it use helps us realize what a harmful term it is.
I find the use of the word evil, and I hate how in today's society, it is being brought back and turned into a common word for use. We should move on from the past prejudices, and stop using it to antagonize certain people. We should only know of its existence, for sole historical purposes, and not to be used in common slang.

It is nice to see someone else who understands, we may not agree on everything but we can agree on this.
