October 8, 1706 - Outside Lillehammer, Norway

The Swedish army had long since succumbed to attrition. The temperature had become warmer and warmer as they had marched to Bergen, but once driven across the desolate forests of Norway and subjected to various guerilla attacks from the Norwegian locals, they emerged from the disastrous campaign's end shivering and tattered. Now, they were marching to Lillehammer. It was a large enough town to use as a base over the winter - if they didn't procure a base in time, the Nordic War's great Northern Campaign could end in utter disaster.

They'd left their camp in Fagernes a week or two prior to march east to Lillehammer. Compared to the arduous trek they'd endured through the Norwegian forests, which left the invading force at a mere nineteen thousand men, it was far easier terrain and they crossed the hundred kilometers easily. They skirted the forests - many of the men had no desire to enter a Norwegian forest again - after losing many of their fellow soldiers in the last forest they'd been forced to cross, many of them openly threatened General Henrik Magnusson with revolt if they had to re-enter.

So they marched across open plains. Of course Denmark was following them - they'd briefly lost the Danes and Norwegians after their trek - and now they were guaranteed to be detected. But it was a small price to pay for a suitable winter base - after the disastrous campaign, Henrik Magnusson knew the Swedish Second Army needed to recover.

October 18, 1706 - Lillehammer, Norway

The Gudbrandsdalslågen River was difficult to cross. Unfortunately, Lillehammer lay on the other side of it. Magnusson gave the order to cross over at a narrower area of the river, far easier to fjord, near a smaller village by the name of Fåvang. They cut over the river and marched south, marching along the river banks.

Stopping at the Lillehammer gates, they readied themselves for siege. For war. And so, on October 18, the Battle of Lillehammer began.

Magnusson sent cavalry to the eastern side of Lillehammer. It was situated on the riverbank, surrounded by forest on three sides, and therefore somewhat difficult to infiltrate. Magnusson knew that the Swedish army needed rest, and five months in Lillehammer would give them adequate rest. The cavalry attacked from the east, and the garrison was surrounded quickly. They had their next base surrounded. Now they would simply have to hope the local garrison of Lillehammer would give in before the Norwegian and Danish reinforcements arrived...

October 19, 1706 - Faaborg, Denmark

The original landing on Aarhus had already been aborted. The Swedes hadn't enough time to prepare - but on their second effort they were more successful. Swedish boats swarmed the banks of southern Lolland and hopped from Lolland to Fyn. Finally, with the Swedish navy holding the Danes back, the navy began to ferry Polish forces from Bornholm to Faaborg, on the island of Fyn. From there, they would take over the island of Fyn and ready to make a landing on the mainland of Denmark herself - on the peninsula of Jutland, where they could attack northwards and cripple Denmark-Norway.

OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE FROM CAROLUS REX, KING OF SWEDEN

To: King George I of the United Kingdom, Queen Marie Anne of France, Francis I of Poland-Lithuania, Emperor Palartok Nertornartok of the Free Inuit State

Dearest European friends and allies,

As our noble war against the odious Kingdom of Denmark-Norway, dubbed by some of us the "Great Nordic War", soon approaches its second year of battle, I invite you or any diplomats representing your noble majesties to a conference at Stockholm in twelve weeks' time to discuss the partition of Danish territory after our victory.

My initial suggestion is that Sweden completes its annexation of Norway, as well as Lolland and small sections of Reykjavik and Tórshavn, Poland-Lithuania annexes Bornholm, Greenland, and Fyn, the United Kingdom secures the Faroe Islands and Iceland, the Free Inuit State takes Denmark-Norway's North American possessions and secures at least one port in Greenland, and the Kingdom of France annexes the islands of Læsø, Anholt, and Falster, as well as at least two ports in the southernmost regions of North America that Denmark-Norway holds.

June 1706
Palace of the Heavenly King, Tianjing
Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of Eternal Peace

The Heavenly King, who had stood over the giant map of Nanyang spread out on the table in the center, looked up just as the Polish-Lithuanian delegation finished speaking. He nodded and smiled.

"Very well, esteemed guests. The Heavenly Kingdom shall accept your plands for economical expansion into the areas you mentioned. We trust that your expansion will be of a humane and peaceful nature, where violence will only be used as a defensive measure.
The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom is mostly interested in expansion in the Ma-i region and in the direct vicinity of our ally, the Sultanate of Mataram. It goes without saying that we consider the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Mataram as a conditio sine qua non. Furthermore, we have several trade posts on differend islands of the Moluccas, which shall remain in place.
But of course, the Royal Nanyang Trading Company shall in no way, shape or form encroach upon territories that are under the guidance of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth or the East India Company of your honourable Realm.

Also, on behalf of the Heavenly Kingdom of Eternal Peace, I accept your offer of alliance and economical cooperation. Of course you shall be allowed to rent housing for your Company within Taiping, and our ports are open to Polish-Lithuanian ships at all times, just like I trust our vessels will be in yours. A Treaty of Friendship and Alliance is indeed in order between our two Realms."

Zhan Xiuquan put his hand on the shoulder of both Polish delegates. "We have a bright future ahead of us, dear guests"

Ambassador Nowak smiled. "All of this sounds agreeable. We will indeed respect both the sovereignty of Mataram and of your trade posts in the Moluccas. The Polish-Lithuanian East India will always try to minimize violence, and we will do our best to secure territory peacefully. Now then, let us prepare a Treaty of Alliance between our two great nations!" The scribes from both countries quickly prepared a formal treaty, elegantly laying out what had already been agreed upon.

While a Polish delegation finalized a treaty in Tianjing, King Francis I of Poland-Lithuania received a message from the King of Sweden. "I do believe such a conference is in order. These tentative terms are agreeable, though some of the other nations may disagree." Francis turned to his Prime Minister. "Kazimierz, you are to go to Stockholm and represent the Commonwealth's interests. I sure you know what to do."

"Indeed," Prime Minister Czartoryski replied. "I will do my best."

From: Francis I, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania

Hail, great rulers!

This suggestion of a conference in Stockholm is a wise one, and I accept. The lands proposed for Polish-Lithuanian annexation are much agreeable, though we are open to discussing the terms with the representatives of other nations. Prime Minister Kazimierz Czartoryski shall represent the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the conference. May the war end decisively in our favor!

Signed, Francis I

With the proposed landing at Aarhus having been abandoned, a more indirect plan was adopted. Swedish and Polish ships quickly began ferrying Hetman Józef Potocki's First Army from Bornholm to Faaborg, which would serve as a base for the takeover of the rest of Fyn. Potocki approved of the plan, and oversaw the transfer from one island to another. Morale was still high among the troops, who were eager to face the Danes in battle.

November 15, 1706 - Lillehammer, Norway

The Swedish supply lines had barely survived the Danish onslaught. As it was, General Henrik Magnusson knew that Lillehammer's supplies were not infinite. In fact, without supplies from the Swedes they would not even last the winter. Yet due to the Danish-Norwegians' march north, taking away many of Magnusson's gains, the nearest Swedish village was in faraway Årdalstangen.

The Second Swedish Army had been without provisions for weeks. Many had perished, and now only 16,000 able Swedish soldiers were inside Lillehammer. Magnusson sent a distress cry. Lead by Erechtheus Nilssen, the northern portions of the Second Swedish Army would have to take over the two hundred kilometers between Årdalstangen and Lillehammer, much of it heavily forested, in about a month.

Nilssen was a good tactician. But was he good enough to march two hundred kilometers before the Swedish army starved?

November 25, 1706 - Karlstad, Swedish West Africa

With the trading post in Namibia now secured, and small refueling stations on the Faroes and Iceland in planned negotiation, Sven Carlson now had multiple Swedish sea bases dotted across the world. It was the first step to Carlson's dream of a Swedish naval empire. Carlson saw the war on Denmark as a necessary evil - with the biggest prize being their soon-to-be-conquered islands. A ship had arrived to sail him from Karlstad back to Stockholm so he could present the new colony in front of the king himself, and, leaving a deputy behind as governor, he boarded the ship to be taken back to Sweden, all the while dreaming about what was to come.

October 1705
Europe, London
St.James's Palace

George I sat with Baron Hadston both enjoying luncheon snacks, while discussing affairs of state and the commonweal. "Our fleet should have arrived in Nigeria by now, they will aid King Haskai in taking the dreadful place" said Hadston, munching down on a few biscuits.

"Excellent, more land for our allies means more for us, just make sure that we gain some of the ports in the region" replied George, absent mindedly buttering a scone.

"Our efforts in Ireland are working well, the Gaelic cultural identity is becoming synonymous with death and suffering, it will not be long before the regions are completely anglicised. Our invasion force aiding the Danish should have reached the Faroe Islands by now as well, mainly made up of Highlanders, fearsome warriors. I do have some troubling news though" said Hadston.

"Oh, pray tell?" asked George I

"A frightful place, the West Indies, has sent a call for arms for the people of this realm to rebel against your Majesty. It is shocking, but ultimately laughable, who does he think will rise for that pretender? A few of the lesser Highlander chieftains may, but the rest will have been placated by our tolerance of Catholics, and most of them are Anglican now anyway and would disagree with the Stuart stance on religion. I have had a decree drawn up, denouncing the nation for attempting to meddle in affairs of a peace-loving country, and chastising them for their extreme amount of slavery. Fear not your Majesty, they are simple upstart rebels with no power basis here in this realm" said Hadston, though he noticed a slight fear in the King. George I feared the Stuarts, as they were technically better claimants than himself, yet he needn't. Their power base had been broken a long time ago, and they would struggle to find any friends in this realm.

October 1705
Europe, Faroe Islands

The Highlands force on 12,000 began landing on the southern portion of the Islands, though only 6000 were being deployed at this time. They were under the control of their various chieftains, which made organisation difficult, but allowed the different clans to work together more efficiently. They swept through the poorly defended beaches and created a forward base, allowing for supplies to be shipped in. They prepared to invade the nearest fort, intending for it to be used as their central base, from which to take over the rest of the island.

"Excellent, his Majesty will be greatly pleased from this news, and you have my assurances that no harm will come to the Prince, the best of care shall be given to him. I will inform his Majesty about the troops, and he will send over some of our best drill instructors, and begin importing weapons. The Commonwealth troops that you have designated will be taken to England for training, which would be completed in around two years, at which point half would return to protect our interests here, and the other half would be deployed across the commonwealth. As for the Papal colony, his Majesty will help you as much as help is needed, but with extra training and troops, he believes that your forces will be more than sufficient to destroy the small colonies. At this time he is unable to spare any troops, but in several months he may be able to send a few regiments to aid you" said Sir Walter Arleigh, the new Governor-General.

October 1705
Africa, Nigera
Atabe

The British fleet had arrived, carrying 8000 Redcoats, ready to attack the Port of Atabe. The ships began firing upon the port, bombarding its small fort and ransacking the houses. This bombardment carried on for a long time, leaving most of the place in rubblem and completely burning. Only then did the admiral give the orders for the troops to begin shipping out. They cared not about damage, or killing the natives. This port would be one of the places administered by the British, and they had orders to clear it out and make way for English settlers.

Royal Decree of Great Britain and Ireland
James Francis Edward Stuart, former Prince of Wales, has been attainted for treason in absentia. He has repeatedly made false claims to the Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland and is to be considered an enemy of the realm. Royal Decree of Great Britain and Ireland
The West Indies Federation has recently, and most unlawfully, called for the good people of this realm to rebel against his Majesty and his Majesty's government. In the propaganda, it is said that they will liberate you as if you were slaves, when it is known that you are free people with rights guaranteed and protected under his Majesty. It is his Majesty's wish that you remember that it was the Stuarts who claimed divine rule, and attempted to curb the rights of their people for more power. Furthermore, the West Indies is renowned for the cruelty of its slave masters, and abundance of slaves. To denounce us for claims of slavery is both hypocritical, and wrong, slavery on British soil is de facto illegal. We urge all citizens to remain civil, loyal and obedient in this crisis, and know that they will continue to receive their rights, protection and love from his Majesty. God save the King, God save Great Britain and Ireland.

December 6, 1706 - Beitostølen, Norway
Brigadier General Erechtheus Nilssen, recently promoted due to his role in the Victory at Sunndalsøra, had marched his men one hundred and sixteen kilometers from Årdalstangen to Beitostølen, fighting off the Danish part of the time, in just over two weeks. While many of the Danish-Norwegian forces were now focused on the five fronts - in the Baltic, the French front on the western coast, on the southern Norwegian-Swedish border, and in the split northern fronts in Lillehammer and now Årdalstangen. Without any hope of winning any battles individually, the Danes had begun to consolidate to deal with the two biggest threats - Magnus Sorenson's Third Army that was marching steadily towards Oslo, and the Polish-Swedish onslaught that was starting to get dangerously close to Copenhagen.

This made Nilssen's job far easier, and while there were some skirmishes, Nilssen's forces slowly marched towards Lillehammer, attempting to open up a supply line and dangerously overstretching.

December 20, 1706 - Lillehammer, Norway

While Erechtheus Nilssen was leading a supply line from Årdalstangen to Lillehammer, General Henrik Magnusson and the Swedish Second Army were beginning to run out of food. Fearing that overeager rationing would finish off the scores of sick and dying Swedish soldiers, Magnusson had reluctantly imposed extremely minor rationing. It helped strengthen the Swedes in Lillehammer, but if Nilssen didn't arrive soon than the Swedish soldiers would starve. It was the dead of winter and bitterly cold, and Magnusson's men now only had a few days of reserves remaining.

Outside, the Danish were laying siege to Lillehammer, and the strong were forced to keep them out instead of recover. Magnusson only hoped the reinforcements would arrive soon...

The Kingdom of Bohemia-Moravia

Western Coast of New Zealand, December, 1706

"Land ho!" shouted a Polish sailor, pointing off to the horizon. The small Bohemian fleet had been sailing for almost a year, stopping by Africa and even India trading for much needed resources. They had heard a rumor of a land out to the east from an Indian trader, land unclaimed. In the name of the King they went in search of it and found it. Quickly sending out the Marines to probe the land they found locals on the land. Quickly asking for shiny objects that the Bohemians could give them, the Merchants came out too and began giving them things. The locals celebrated and soon the Bohemians and locals were on decent terms. A few of the men of the ships began learning the native dialect, seeing the need for it in the future. Fort Zikmund had begun to be built, named after the captain of the Marines that were the first on. The continent they were on would be named Dunkazemě, or Dunkaland. It was named after the captain of the first ship that spotted the islands and the admiral of the small fleet. Some poles stayed, all of the marines stayed, and the empty trade ships head back to Europe with Indian goods and the food needed to reach the resupply points.

Palace of the Heavenly King, Tianjing
Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of Eternal Peace

The Heavenly King took the quill and signed the official documents.
"Consider yourselves allies of the Heavenly Kingdom!" he proclaimed officially, and shook hands with the Polish-Lithuanian delegates.
"A grand time is approaching for both our Realms, so help us God!

Now let us, retire, esteemed guests, and seek some calm after the hard works of diplomacy.
Ambassador Nowak, I'm sure you wish to inspect your newest residence in this fine city."

As the three men walked away from the conference room, First Councilor Feng got to work. Writing up the news in letters to be sent to the Prince of Taiwan, as well as to the Governor of the Royal Nanyang Trading Company. Joyous news of a new alliance, informative news of new trading opportunities and warning news of areas that were to remain untouched because of future Polish-Lithuanian influence.

With the Songhai army now fully mobilized, they began the long march into the Nigerian territory. Almost 90,000 soldiers, 3 times what the Songhai brought last time.
This would be a bloody year.
The Songhai army was split up into 2 groups. One smaller group would be moving to the city of Kano, while the other larger group would be moving directly to the capital.

Numbers are as follows:

Capital Siege Army

40,000 Line infantry
2,500 spear troop
No cavalry
The whole artillery corps

Northern Field Army

25,000 Line infantry
12,500 Spear troop
2,500 Cavalry

The current battle plan was to attack the main Nigerian forces in Northern Nigeria in a field engagement, crush them, then move the northern field army south to meet with the Capital Siege Army. After that, they would begin to assault the city full scale and take the capital. Then they would move south to rendezvous with the British forces then they would annex, clear out and divide up the territory between them.

Quick clean and efficient. If all goes according to plan the attack and annexation should only take a year at most.
There may be little use for people who can't accept reality, but there is no use for the broken who can't escape it.- Khaner Annan

Palace of the Heavenly King, Tianjing, Taiping

Ambassador Nowak and the other Polish-Lithuanian delegates shook hands with the Heavenly King. "Yes," Nowak said as he and his colleagues walked down the hall of the palace with Zhu Xiuquan. "I am much looking forward to close relations between our two nations. Now then, I am much looking forward to see what quarters you have arranged for myself. I trust that we should have no difficulty in securing a location for our embassy in Tianjing?"

"Speaking of which," Vytautas Janavičius interjected, "I was hoping to secure a consulate building in a coastal city like Mokpo. The East India Company needs a location by the sea, and I'm sure the Commonwealth government will need a consulate in a coastal city to deal with the the Polish-Lithuanian merchants that will come rushing into your ports. That won't be a problem, will it?"

Wilanów Palace, Warsaw, Poland

The news of the Polish-Taiping alliance eventually reached Wilanów Palace, where King Francis was meeting with East India Company governor Abraham Rabinowitz.

"This is indeed excellent news," Rabinowitz said. "Those men should be rewarded for their work."

"Indeed," Francis agreed. "Nowak is already our ambassador to Taiping. Perhaps we can appoint Mr. Janavičius as the Polish-Lithuanian consul in Mokpo?"

"Certainly," Rabinowitz replied. "Meanwhile, Andrej Dashkevich could become head of the Company's Asian division and would lead our efforts in that region from Tianjing."

"Excellent! I shall send a message to the gentlemen to inform them of their new posts."

April 15, 1707 - Outside Oslo, Norway

The start of the campaign had been one of Magnus Sorenson's finest accomplishments. In January, the Third Swedish Army had suddenly marched forty-five kilometers in two days - a trivial amount compared to what Henrik Magnusson and the majority of the Swedish Army was doing in the north, but it propelled the army to outside of Drøbak. Sorenson, not stuck up north, could afford to take more risks during the winter, and this was merely one of them. Still, Sorenson's Winter Campaign, while an awful idea on paper (considering he was in Norway), ended up not being a disaster. And they did advance ever-closer, making their real campaign (beginning, more sensibly, in March) more effective.

Now, they were a mere fifteen kilometers outside of Oslo, in Oppegard. A second round of drafts had been held, less rigorous than the first, to provide a shield for Sorenson's men from Danish reinforcements, and so far the new recruits, despite their lack of skill, managed to, by sheer numbers, hold off Denmark-Norway. But Sorenson knew they would soon falter - Denmark's soldiers were well-trained.

Which was a great issue in Oppegard, as Sorenson quickly found himself outnumbered. He'd originally been sent as a decoy, but somehow he'd made it so close to Oslo. He knew they couldn't stop now. They'd have to loan part of the northern forces if they wanted to survive 1707. Still, the Danes were as close to defeat as they'd ever been.

April 18, 1707 - Bryne, Norway

Sorenson didn't know, being far too deep into enemy territory to receive a message, but General Henrik Magnusson had already marched his men south. They'd left Lillehammer early - faking a retreat, leading the Norwegians into the forest, then running around and heading due southwest to throw them off their tracks. It was a shallow ruse, but it worked long enough to give Sorenson's men a lead. And by now, the Second Swedish Army, having been through the Norwegian forests without rations and surviving a winter in Lillehammer, knew better than to complain.

Magnusson had decided to pursue their original objective and head southwest, leaving roughly 3,000 to join up with Sorenson's men in Oslo. The remaining 38,000 - already many of his men had died from attrition, and many of the soldiers remaining were Erechtheus Nilssen's, most of which hadn't made it to Lillehammer before Christmas.

Now, they had marched across Norway to hit their southwest coast, and so far the unexpected campaign had been successful. With most of the northern borderlands still under Swedish command, they had taken Bryne, and now they would march to Kristiansand...
