Solution deniers

For discussion and debate about anything. (Not a roleplay related forum; out-of-character commentary only.)

Is solution denial a problem? Is it real?

This is what is wrong with (Insert opposite ideology here)'s! They deny the problem exists! But (Insert own ideology here)'s don't do this...

Well, I guess this can affect most everyone. It looks like this explains the kookiness extremists in both parties exhibit.

For a few crazy people this might be true, but I think most people don't have this problem.

Naw, this doesn't happen. Silly University studies.

What, solution denial? And the solution is to acknowledge pure scientific data as it is presented? Errr.... Nope, I don't believe this is a problem, it does not exist, lalalala.....

Solution deniers

Postby Blasted Craigs » Fri Nov 28, 2014 2:31 am

I heard about an interesting study from Duke University that found that why many people ignore overwhelming scientific data and facts on an issue is over solution denial. What this means, is if there is a problem, and the solution is a prospect they do not like, then instead of seeing that a solution is needed, the person ignores the fact that the problem exists, even if faced with overwhelming evidence to the proof the problem does, in fact, exist. They will, against all common sense, admit that there is a problem, and will in essence, bury their head in the sands. Two examples that showed this phenomenon exists for both conservatives and liberals was with climate change and crime.

http://today.duke.edu/2014/11/solutionaversion

For conservatives, they were given the issue of climate change and presented evidence, and when the solution was tighter government regulation (which conservatives traditionally oppose) the response was only 22 percent believed the study, and when the solution was free market green technology advancements ( using a free market approach to the problem) 55 percent believed the study.

There were similar results according to the article when liberals were presented with home break in statistics, and the proposed solution was looser gun ownership laws. Many of the liberals denied the validity of the data on the subject, and a majority denied the problem was as bad as the study said.

Honestly, this explains the pigheadedness of both divides to me in this country.

( I have often had a hard time identifying with either party for this very reason, I am a supporter of gun ownership rights, and a supporter of greener laws and conservation efforts, due to the facts of both issues. IMHO, more civilian gun ownership promotes a safer society, not just because criminals are less likely to attack a person due to the chance they might be armed, but police misconduct is less likely for the same reason. And climate change, well, if unchecked will eventually make this planet unlivable for humans. Life will go on, we will not. And so I was always baffled by both parties self induced ignorance in the light of facts and data, going so far as to cherry pick data, slant or skew results, or outright deny the problem.)

So my question is, what do you think of this study? Is it a good explanation for why it seems people seem to figuratively cover their ears and ignore a problem? Or does this problem not exist?

I think, IMHO, this study hits the nail on the head, so to speak. It also makes me want to reevaluate my opinions on issues, to make sure I am not ignoring evidence of potential issues we as a planet face.
The government in America can best be described with an analogy. The two political parties are two cats, the elite is a rat, power is the cheese, and the common people is the floor. The floor feels two cats can guard the cheese better than one. But the cats fight each other, and the rat makes off with the cheese in glee. The floor cannot leave, and soon both cats serve the rat, because the rat has the all powerful cheese, and gives the cats a small bit of it. So the floor gets crapped on by all three, as they eat the cheese together.

It is a real thing, but it is really human nature. When one disagrees with something, they will have to find reasons to justify their stance, and one of the numerous ways to do so is to attack the studies and evidence supporting the solution. That is why liberals would attack a study that concluded to support looser gun laws, or why Conservatives would attack a study that concluded to support regulations and taxes. Debate tactics will result in things like this, and it would be asinine to deny that such a thing exists and is really unstoppable.

I call that "idiocy".

Did we really need an academic study to know that many people are idiots?

No, but it clarifies why they act idiotic...
It also proves that the idiotic behavior is not limited to one group or ideology.

I completely agree. Solution denying is human nature. I've done it before, so have lot's of others.
Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing

Well I think it is ridiculous to compare global climate change with violent home breakins. I haven't read the study but right there I see a systemic mistake.

Anyone in the thread who HAS read the study, please TG me a plain text copy. It's pay to view, unless you have a site subcription (eg from your college or university). The study.

Obviously I'm not going to pay to read it.

Sigh. Just another thread based on a summary, claiming "a study" which the OP hasn't read.

If you read the article, you can just email troy.campbell@duke.edu if you want a copy of the study.

oh I see. it makes better sense to me now.

I have been thinking for a while that it is kinda crazy for the conservatives to deny climate change. in MY mind they ought to acknowledge the obvious but protest the likely effectiveness of the solutions. they have started doing it to some extent but it is FAR more common to have such people say "look its snowing! what climate change?" instead.

but it makes sense that its a psychological thing. I know it sometimes takes me a while to accept that some unpleasant reality is true.
whatever
