It's because a lot of people cling to primitive notions of there being more to life than life. Even those that don't ordinarily admit it more often than not share the socially imposed conviction that for some strange reason the corpse is somehow still the person it was during life. I find the whole thing laughable.
As far as I am concerned I don't rightly care what happens to my corpse after I am dead. After all I won't exist. And existing is a fundamental requirement for caring.
