What is the most severe punishment in your country, and when are they given?

In World Empire the most severe punishments are all kinds of torture but we also have very harsh death sentences like:

Impalement: Only for treasoners and people who attacked or tried to attack His Imperial Majesty Emperor Ronald I or anyone in his staff (Ministers, Generals etc.)

Skinning/Flaying Reserved for anyone who dares to burn or destroy a portrait of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Ronald I or his autobiographical book ''The Empido''

The following four sentences are considered the most severe:

Ostracism; reprimand given to an individual by a community and confirmed by a recognised court or authority. Validity of ostracism is solely dependent on court acceptance; if a court confirms it, it's valid. It can be given for anything the community in question deems to be objectionable, but it can't violate constitutional rights. Ostracism is a simple form of exile on a local level and of limited duration.

Disenfranchisement; a sentence which results in the convict either atimia or being declaredNiding. Essentially a loss of citizen rights and a form of internal exile which boils down to house arrest. The convict still enjoys the protection of the law in a general sense, but is no longer granted public representation or a voice. This penalty is considered very severe and is a form of social death, and can easily be compared to a capital punishment sentence in other judicial systems. Disenfranchiesment is a penalty given for major and/or repeat violations of the law, and/or bringing excessive harm, damage, and/or discord into society. Only a court can assign this penalty.

Outlawry; individual is no longer protected by the law and is declared "vogelfrei", basically equal to a bird in the eyes of the public. Being declared an outlaw is equal to suffering legal death, that is cessation of legal personality, which means such an individual can no longer meaningfully interact with society, work, own property, operate a business, etc. Anyone harming an outlaw cannot be persecuted by legal authorities, i.e. killing an outlaw is not considered murder. From a legal perspective outlawry isn't a death sentence, but technically speaking it is essentially exactly that, a death sentence. Deliberately disrespecting the order of a court, the decision of the citizenry, or the law results in outlaw status. As such, outlawry is a frequent penalty for those who refuse to abide by the decision of a court, e.g. failing to accept a sentence. Commonly outlawry is a penalty persons get if they fail to respect a community's vote of ostracism (going against the will of the community) or a courts sentence of disenfranchisement (not abiding official judicial rulings), but it can also be applied for abuse of political position and/or power in cases of political corruption, or if someone breaks a voluntarily given, officially recognised oath. Outlawry is a rarely given punishment.

Exile; either internal or external, with the former being far more common than the latter, is the forced resettlement or sometimes deportation to a specific area. Exile is considered the highest possible and most frightening penalty one can be sentenced too in Prut culture. Although not always, exile can and frequently is accompanied by another sentence as well. This penalty is given to traitors, oathbreakers, and/or tyrants, and less frequently to metics, foreign prisoners, and enemies. To dispel any misconceptions about the severity of exile in Prut legal context, one should be aware that the exiled doesn't get a say as to where, when, and under what circumstances the exile will take place. Exile is a complete removal from society and frequently also from "civilisation" at large, and might vary from being deported to a rock in the middle of the sea to being thrown into a deep pit to being sealed in a cave.

All four are still considered redeemable, i.e. the convict is still able to return to society under certain circumstances. Ostracism is obviously the easiest to return from while exile is the most difficult to return from. However, the highest possible penalty is irreversible and can never be atoned for. The penalty is:

It is mandatory for repeated refusal to participate in ancestral worship, and possible for regicide.

The most severe punishment in the Imperial Dominion is being sentenced to the Ebonmire Glade Detention Center. It is reserved for those mages that go too far into the dark and cannot be put down via conventional means. As such, the Ebonmire Glade basically places the inmate in such an awful condition that they eventually give up on life and let themselves die. Sometimes... the inmate can be rehabilitated in which case they have their memory wiped and altered then are shipped out to the opposite end of the Empire.

What is the most severe punishment in your country...

Hypothetically, the most severe punishment we can give is house arrest, which would be imposed only in a case in which the offender was deemed a serious threat to the public. The house would be monitored on an ongoing basis by police to ensure compliance and in the event that the offender was unwilling to comply, he might be fitted with an ankle bracelet. (We don't actually have an ankle bracelet but we could probably get one from the Internet if we needed one.)

Since we have very little violent crime in Fatatatutti, there are no cases on the books of house arrest being imposed.

Exile can be issued by an Emperor/Empress but, again, this has never been enforced.
So it's typically prison.

We use Old Sparky, public hangings, firing squad and lethal injection but sometimes we find something so horrible that we stone the criminal to death. The twist is, we like to let the convict pick his own death and once we get him prepared he was to inject himself, flip the electricity switch or shoot himself if he doesnt want any of the above.

TurtleShroom's greatest punishment is death. Execution occurs by lethal injection, hanging, guilliotine, and the electric chair. Theoretically, it is also possible to be burned at the stake or stoned. No one has been burned for over a hundred fifty years, and there has never been a stoning in TurtleShroomer history. These punishments, while on the books, are not expected to be used any time soon.
