As for Hong Kong, there's too much western coverage of this issue to let China do everything it wants. I think the students will prevail, one way or another, or we get a compromise.

Why does Western society seem to believe democracy is the answer to everything? I'm not claiming to be any more educated or generally better than the electorate but it is quite easy to notice the majority of the population does not have the capacity to vote. Enlightened absolutism is the answer.
