The sapient ponies of Calivanthia have for a long time pushed for independence ever since they fell under their colonial sphere of influence nearly three centuries ago. The planet of Yalshia V was home to 12 billion ponies of various races, mostly to 6 billion moth ponies that were native to the lands long before the arrival of The Coyotian Galactic Empire. The planet was once under the ownership of the coyotes of Coyotia, which they obtained through a war with a neighboring equine nation. Tensions brewed between the Coyotians and The Calivanthians regarding the passage of trading routes on the outer atmosphere of Yalshia V. War broke out when Coyotia assaulted a Calivanthian caravan outside the planet.
As the First Calivanthian-Coyotian war dragged on, the pony inhabitants always received the brunt of the attacks that took place during offensives, resulting in the deaths of millions of earth ponies and moth ponies alike in the negligent use of Calivanthia’s area denial weaponry. To avoid an invasion of their main star system, the Coyotians reluctantly withdrawn, surrendering Yalshia V to Calivanthia as reparations and as a peace offering to end the war. With their economy too ruined to begin the pony purge, the Calivanthians put the small equines to fierce manual labor and breeding operations to sell as slaves abroad for the next two centuries.
Rebellions were always crushed as the ponies where ill-prepared to fight their human overlords, during Calivanthia’s economic depression, they seceded from their empire and underwent a 30 year period of détente with Calivanthia. Whilst their independence was officially declared in a intergalactic summit, The Calivanthians saw fit to declare war upon the equines in pursuit of the mineral wealth on their planet.
