Victory and all that sort of thing! Furellum introduces Under-21 Squad

Furellum make their return to the Di Bradini, seen in the country as a way of moving the almost-champions of the U-15 World Cup to the nobodies of the Senior competition. A team cobbled together from junior squads of the past have made their way to Starblaydia to fight for home and glory. Or at least to hang out in shopping malls and gawp at all the technology. Either way, the FFA are just happy they made it this time, and didn't end up lost in a temporal vortex like the last team they sent to an AO country.

The Background
To the unaware, Furellum is a small island situated at the mouth of the Taaru Sea in Atlantian Oceania. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, as it were. The vast majority of the nation sits in another dimension, accessible only through the portal at the top of the White Tower that connects the capital of Altsby with its counterpart Other Altsby. Furellum is a land soaked in magic and stalled in time, and it is common to see men flying through the air while at the same time cars are missing from the streets. Furellum's population is made up of a vast array of sentient, bipedal, anthropomorphic animals, mostly of mammalian species. Humans are relative newcomers, only appearing in the country in the last 800 years, when the country was conquered by the Kingdom of Maalvia, who maintain Furellum as a Grand Duchy to this day.

The Team
Coach: Claudiu Frey
Assistant Coach: Eliphalet Zoric
Motto: Victoria et hoc genus omne

Goalkeepers
#1 Mihails Gavrilovic
Species: Gelada Baboon
Club: Upton-on-Rode
Age: 18
Position: Starting Goalkeeper
Bio: Impressing in two U-15 World Cups, Mihails has quickly become one of the best keepers in the country, and a move to the senior team looks almost certain for this talented and experienced youngster. Naturally gifted, Mihails has an almost unstoppable energy that has him bouncing around the goal and stopping shots from any angle. His long reach and jumping distance make him tough to score against, even on a rebound.

#12 Boris Mihajlovic
Species: Rhinoceros
Club: Gallifor
Age: 19
Position: Reserve Goalkeeper
Bio: Once considered the best junior goalkeeper in the country, Mihajlovic has been surpassed by Gavrilovic and now must make do with second spot.

Defenders
#4 Thor Kokot
Species: Horse
Club: Gallifor
Age: 18
Position: Starting Right Back
Bio: One of the rising stars of the last DBC squad, Thor makes a welcome return. It is a wonder he is even here at all, as he comes from an isolated minority group living at the far edge of the Great Plains. This community, the Sliepnirians, are all horses, and marked by a life devoted to wandering and the worship of their gods. Thor still follows his people's religion and traditions, but has left his home to join Gallifor, one of the stronger sides in Furellum's league. His hero is national team captain Fyodor Iosef.

#3 Ragnar Asbjorn
Species: Polar Bear
Club: Guldisall
Age: 20
Position: Starting Centre Back
Bio: Ragnar is one of the players from the senior squad. He is big and tough, but he is also remarkably quick. He has a tendency to go in too hard and foul opposing strikers. Due to his bulk, once they're hit, they stay down, often causing Asbjorn to be yellow-carded where others might be let off with a warning.

#2 Lievin Zaboulon
Species: Otter
Club: Upton-on-Rode
Age: 20
Position: Starting Centre Back
Bio: Zaboulon, like many otters in Furellum, comes from a fishing village along the Rode river. As the middle child of eight in a working-class family, he's lived a hard life, but that only motivates him more on the pitch. Football is Lievin's life, and he is a hardworking defender with a good ability to harass opposing players and steal the ball from under their noses.

#5 Decebal Ozolinsh
Species: Brown Bear
Club: Ingridberg
Age: 16
Position: Starting Left Back
Bio: Another stalwart of the U-15 world cup, Decebal is a close-in defender, preferring to hustle an opponent for the ball rather than intercept a pass. Decebal is extremely fastidious, and hates disorder of any kind.

#14 Mladen Gabor
Species: Wolverine
Club: Straight Street
Age: 16
Position: Reserve Right Back
Bio: Banned from the U-15 team for feeding a teammate laxatives before a semi-final, Gabor is now back in the FFA's good books. Mladen brings an attacking ferocity to the team, a defender prepared to get the ball at any cost.

#15 Ion Funar
Species: Capybara
Club: Rodenia
Age:17
Position: Reserve Left Back
Bio: This is Ion's first time playing for his country. It is rare enough to find a capybara outside of the isolated waterways of the far east of the country, but Ion has fitted in well to life in the city. As a player, he is quick on the field and a good man to have when an opposing striker breaks through the line.

#16 Vidarr Stefanovich
Species: Hippopotamus
Club: Ingridberg
Age:19
Position: Reserve centre Back
Bio: Built like the proverbial house, being tackled by Vidarr really is like being hit by a ton of bricks. Or at least a ton of over-eager Furellum defender. Vidarr always wants the ball, and takes to the sport with an excitement and energy that cannot be contained.

Midfielders
#6 Levi Kolar
Species: Red Deer
Club: Little Whittling
Age: 17
Position: Starting Defensive Midfielder
Bio: A big name on the junior circuit for many years, this is Kolar's second Di Bradini cup. A cool and collected player, Kolar will need every ounce of his skill and experience as the only defensive midfielder in Furellum's line up.

#7 Zhenya Polzin
Species: Jungle Cat
Club: Altsby and Castle
Age: 16
Position: Starting Left Winger
Bio: Zhenya is small, agile and technically brilliant. If it wasn't for his tendency to panic when placed under pressure, he might have made an excellent striker. He is good out on the wings though, and if given enough space can create plenty of good scoring opportunities for Furellum's forwards.

#9 Adam Vukoja
Species: Human 16, CM, Human, Guldisall Jr
Club: Guldisall
Age: 18
Position: Starting Centre Midfielder
Bio: Vukoja plays for Guldisall, the university where he is currently studying the secrets of magic. Adam has dreams of one day being a wizard, but he is already a wizard with a football. Vukoja has been at the centre of Furellum junior football for years, and is assured a position on the senior squad one day if he wants it.

#8 Stepjan Albescu
Species: Gazelle
Club: City Watch
Age: 16
Position: Starting Right Winger
Bio: Stepjan is a solid, dependable player, the oldest of several brothers to play football. Little brother Rudolf has also played for Furellum in the U-15 WC, as Stepjan once did. A talented footballer in his own right, Stepjan will be dangerous on the flank with his powerful right hoof and accurate crosses.

#17 Domen Loke, 18, RM, Leopard, Felismarch
Species: Leopard
Club: Felismarch
Age: 19
Position: Reserve Right Midfielder
Bio: Another player from the last DBC, Loke has grown as a player in the last year. While quick and with enough smarts to get around defenders, Loke is also introverted and selfish. He'd rather try to beat five defenders himself then pass to a teammate. However, he has been working on that, and will see plenty of game time this cup.

#18 Mordecai Vukoja
Species: Human
Club: Other Altsby
Age: 16
Position: Reserve Centre Midfielder
Bio: No relation to Adam Vukoja, Mordecai hates it when people assume they are related. It would help of course if Mordecai had the same talent as his name sake, but he doesn't. He is however, still a dependable and solid performer on the field, and well suited to replace his more skilled namesake in a pinch.

#19 Volund Dragos
Species: Grey Wolf
Club: Other Altsby
Age: 17
Position: Reserve Left Midfielder
Bio: Volund is another new player on the scene. A perfect gentleman of the field, on the pitch he becomes a fierce and aggressive midfielder with a reckless tendency to try for long shots at goal. If that ferocity can be well managed, he'll go far.

Forwards
#10 Moisey Vaduva
Species: Markhor Goat
Club: Gallifor
Age: 21
Position: Starting Left Forward
Bio: He might look like an old veteran with his grey hair and almost floor length braided beard, but Moisey is a youngster at just 21. He should be 22, but he's been snuck into the squad on a technicality. That technicality being that after Moisey was lost with the rest of the team in a time vortex before AOCAF 43, the FFA used the same time travel magic to bring the WC67 squad forward in time to compete in WC68. This is then Moisey Vaduva from the past, a Moisey Vaduva that is 21 years of age and therefore eligible for the DBC. While he has played a more supporting role to star forward Eleazar Szczelaszczyk in the senior squad, this cup is a chance for him to shine in his own right.

#11 Ezra Szczelaszczyk
Species: Leopard
Club: White Market
Age: 18
Position: Starting Right Forward
Bio: The son of Furellum's star forward Eleazar Szczelaszczyk, Ezra is a champion in his own right. He was a key player in the 4th and 5th U-15 World Cups, where Furellum came second both times, and is set to continue the Szczelaszczyk sporting dynasty. This will no doubt annoy foreign commentators who will have to try and pronounce that surname for many years to come.

#20 Mikhail Novak
Species: Black Boar
Club: City Watch
Age: 16
Position: Reserve Centre Forward
Bio: Another former U-15 squad member, Novak is an aggressive, no-holds-barred type of player. If he can't dodge a defender, he'll go through him. While his style might be rough, he's also tenacious, and if there's an opportunity to score Mikhail will be there, swooping on the ball. He's also got a great header, his curving tusks and flat snout giving him a scoop with which to flick the ball home.

#21 Han Kaspar
Species: Wolf
Club: Little Whittling
Age: 18
Position: Reserve Left Forward
Bio: Han played alongside Ezra in the Under-15 squad, but while his companion has risen in fame, Han faded into obscurity for a few years. Now he's back on the squad, albeit in the reserves, and ready to make his presence felt. Han prefers to shoot from point blank range, and will try to get as close as possible to the goal before attempting to score.

#22 Boris Funar
Species: Stoat
Club: Upton-on-Rode
Age: 16
Position: Reserve Right Forward
Bio: A reserve on the most recent U-15 cup squad, Boris has yet to make a name for himself in junior football. He has talent enough to ensure another spot on the reserves here though, so it's possible he'll be around for a good while yet

---------

Explanatory/OOC content

The team plays a 5-3-2 with Vilhjalmsson as the sweeper. 1-11 are the expected starting XI, but there are concerns over the fitness of Fletcher, and Colombo would provide a more attacking option in the middle - it'll certainly be a common substitution. Still, even the creative players tend towards the tiki-taka, and that tends towards the defensive in terms of its effect on goalscoring, so it's easy as pi to assign them a deeply negative -3.142 style modifier.

The popularity of gridiron in much of the country, and of all sorts of different sports somewhere or another, means that the soccer team is mostly filled with relatively diminuitive and agile players. To put it politely, Vilhjalmsson is an exception - and he's faced all sorts of pressure from different governing bodies to commit to a different sport, but he's having none of it and will be the rock of the Kytlerian back line for many years to come. In front of him, the rest of the team look to deny opponents the oxygen of possession with patient passing - the full-backs, especially York-Alney, will move into midfield to contribute to this. There'll be some youthful mistakes, of course, but this team has had the importance of possession drilled into them pretty effectively. If this team is a feeble impersonation of Barcelona with a hulking sweeper plugged in, then Schrijnemakers is a feeble impersonation of Messi, a short and slippery dribbler who floats around the final third looking to create the best opportunity possible to stroke the ball into the net from close range.

RP permissions: do anything you like within the confines of approximate realism and the explanation of how they play, preferably without major injuries or too many cards.

“Absolutely fantastic: we've got those nut cases from Schiavonia in the first game. Because, this is exactly how I wanted to start off this Di Bradini Cup: having a distraction like these guys.”

The irate, and slightly annoyed, voice came from Rumen Assendorp, manager of the Zenic U-21 team. A rather tall and lean older man, Assendorp was very famous for having a short temper. A brief search of Assendorp on the internet would bring up a long list of incidents stretching 32 years. Luckily for him, he was an amazing manager and brilliant tactician so he was able to hold jobs longer than you would expect. Sitting beside him in the car, groaning after every sentence, was his similarly-built assistant manager, Brutus Cremona. Not exactly the expected choice considering Assendorp and Cremona were fierce rivals for several years in the Zenic Major League, the predecessor to the Premier League of the Empire: the intense matches between Assendorp's Real Old Maiz and Cremona's Deline Athletic were stuff of legends.

So now, the two fierce rivals being on the same team didn't particularly instill confidence in the fans of Zenic football. “And by the way, how are they ranked above us if they’ve barely come back from being out of the game so long? We should be the number one rank in our group,” Assendorp complained further. “Complaining and complaining and complaining; seriously, just shut up. Honestly, all we have to do is win two games. It doesn't matter what we’re ranked, football is all the same: just win,” retorted Cremona, hoping it would finally silence Assendorp so he wouldn't have to hear complaining for another 3 hours.

Assendorp glared at Cremona, knowing well enough how much he irked his assistant manager. Deciding that it would be best not to start a fistfight in a moving vehicle, he decided to change the subject. “Pardon
me for asking,” he said annoyingly,” but what do you think of my choice for captain?” Cremona looked at him with a curious look. “You mean Ljubo Jani? Nice kid, good head on his shoulders, terrible shooter but strong legs and the crispest passing I’ve ever seen. However, still not sure why you went with him over Zabala or Bobal, even possibly Van der Vennen. I’m pretty sure Van der Vennen is going to the national team in the future. So why go with the unknown guy?”

Assendorp sighed, shaking his head. “I went with Jani because he’s relatively unknown. You know what that means? It means he really doesn't a big head like Zabala or Bobal or as much pressure to succeed as Van der Vennen. Do you imagine heaping on the pressure of being team captain on top of practically being declared by the press and fans as the one who will propel Zenic to the same levels as the contenders in Rushmore and the rest of the universe?”

“Good point,” is all Cremona would say. He hated agreeing with Assendorp but even he knew his rival and manager was correct. All that was left was to see how Jani and the rest of the team did against Schiavonia and....Silver Rainbow Fumes.

“Assendorp, how the hell did we end up in such a weird group?”

"What?! Of course, I mean... Some even already played internationally!"
"Oh... Hm... And would someone care?"
"What! This is the WCC we're speaking about, not the FIFA."
"Hm... And aren't there alternative solutions?"
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know, forged passports or something..."
"Are you completely bonkers? Can I get someone else on the line?"
"I'm afraid I'm the only one present today, mate. Wednesday afternoon, you know."
"Sigh... Ok, ok. But could you just check in on the organising committee what to do about it?"
"Oh, ok... I'll send them a letter."
"A letter?!"
"You know, on paper and all."
"..."
"Depending on their answer, I'll get back to you in four to six days."
"But the opening game is in two days! Our tournament could be over before you receive any response!"
"Oh... How many players of the right age you've got?"
"Nineteen, but..."
"Oh, splendid."
"But..."
"The connection is dropping, sir, I'll have to leave you..."
"But!"
"Tuut... Tuut... Tuut..."
"That's just you making noises as if the line is cut!"
"No I'm not! I mean, tuut... tuut... tuut..."

Issues in personnel forces the Young Hedgehogs in an unconventional 3-5-2 line-up. Much against everyone's surprise, Franciszek Bogusz appears between the sticks, remarkable for a Second Division goalie. The only three defenders of the right age are, from left to right, Justs, Ruutu and Hjortsberg as Hulsvist suffers from some minor injuries. Suhr and Wladecki operate as the double lock on the door, while Czarny and Plovnarov cover the wings. The linch pin in the line-up should be Stefan Ladsell, the creative heart from IFK Pollmarnang. In front of him, we find rising star Stefan Hostmann, the youngest one on the selection, and the skillful left foot of Vincas Norkus.

12. Bogusz
5. Justs *** 4. Ruutu *** 13. Hjortsberg
6. Suhr *** 14. Wladecki
22. Plovnarov *** 10. Ladsell *** 11. Czerny
9. Hostmann *** 27. Norkus

Tough Group In Di Bradini Cup

Image

Di Bradini Cup 31/Under-21 World Cup 52 - It was with a mixture of anxiety and excitement that the Darvalian Under-21 team manager Len Williamson watched as the 31st Di Bradini Cup, also known a the 52nd Under-21 World Cup's group draw was announced. He was seen walking away with a rather normal face, showing close to no sign of any emotion or thought. Filopines, Darvale, and Kernansqillec would make up for Group 7.

However, in an exclusive TDF (The Daily Footballer) interview with Mr. Williamson yesterday evening, Mr. Williamson seemed worried, saying that Group 7, the group Darvale is in, was a tough one. Below is a part of the interview:

Reporter: "Good evening Mr. Williamson, and thank you for joining us today."
Williamson: "Thank you."
Reporter: "Well, to start with, what do you think of the current Darvalian Under-21 roster?"
Williamson: "Well, they aren't perfect, but I do believe that they will play well, the moral is very good."
Reporter: "I see, are there any players that you are specially counting on?"
Williamson: "No, no, I consider all of them to be equally talented."
Reporter: "OK, so, when the group draw was announced, you seemed to be relatively calm. Do you think the calfs will be able to beat both Filopines and Kernansquillec?"
Williamson: "Oh, well I was actually deep in thought, and I consider both teams to be formidable opponents."
Reporter: "Hm, what are your predicted scores for the matches?"
Williamson: "Well, it really is hard to say... but I expect a win against maybe one of the teams, and then a draw with another one."
Reporter: "I see. Now, a last question, up to where in the tournament do you expect your team to go up to?"
Williamson:"With a bit of luck and good play, I'm pretty sure the team will be able to qualify and maybe make it to the Round of 16."
Reporter: "Well, that was it, so good luck on our first match against Kernansquillec."
Williamson: "Cheers."

Darvale's first match will be against Kernansquillec, as the reporter mentioned in the interview. Kernansquillec seems to be a largely offensive team, but analysis shows that the Calfs attack a little more than the Kers though. A poll back home says that the 66% of Darvalian citizens surveyed believe that the Calfs will get away with a win.

The Calfs' next match will be the day after their match against the Kers. Filopines, a dangerous team, seem to be the most offensive team the Calfs will face - the Calfs do not expect a win against a team like this.

Flight of The Bustard - Part One

Florican Party HQ
17 Riordan Road
Chippenham
Isle Saria

The votes were in, Fredrik Elwing could not believe it. He was six seats short of a majority. Six seats. Normally in The Sarian, this wouldn't matter. Smaller parties normally side with the government on all bills, but no party would support The Florican Party in the bills they wanted to pass. The bills they needed to pass.

He could use blackmail, but no - it would never work. If the press found out before they were banned it would be over, he would be over. He didn't know what to do.

"Chief Executive, His Majesty would like to see you"

"Ready the car. Today we fight back."

It was a cold night, the owls were in full song and the reporters were finally packing up from across Gilbert House and going home. Robert Balfour sat there, sipping on a coffee. As did Heather Weller, as did Harold Saxon, as did Andrew Grimaldi.

It was almost unprecedented. The leaders of the United Liberals, Unionists and Conservatives sitting together united, alongside a former President of Yttribia. But here they were, because it times like this it stopped mattering what your beliefs were, as long as they were moderate.

Jollies Cafe was always the place of choice for these such meetings, being in Parliament Square it both served convenience and a number of pastries, but in particular - you needed a permit to report any stories that arose from it.

Robert Balfour was the first to speak, his nasal voice under strain for failing rallies. He had gone from the largest party in the Legislative Assembly to the fourth.

"We need to do something. I get we don't like each other, I get we fling shit at each other regularly, but we all share a common love for democracy and this nation."

"Robert, with all due respect, they were elected democratically, whether we like it or not." It was Harold Saxon who piped up, as Leader of the Conservative Party, he was now the official leader of the opposition, for as long he was allowed to be.

"Harold, it's all very well sprouting they were elected democratically, but they will be staying in power for ever."

"You've seen what happens in fascist regimes." It was Grimaldi who now spoke, as the former Yttribian President - he was very much the outsider in the group. "They take over and they never get back. It happened in The Inevitable Syndicate, it is happening in my own country and it will happen here. We need to stop them."

"Your Majesty." It was a mock bow. Fredrik Elwing wanted nothing more but to leave the presence of the Monarch, but this was an obligatory part of a constitution that had not yet been written. A constitution that will never be written.

"Fredrik Arthur Johannes Elwing, do you accept the role and responsibilities of Chief Executive of His Majesties Executive Council and Government?"

"I do."

"And do you vow to remain loyal to this and all future Sarian Monarchs, people and traditions in your partaking of the role."

There was a slight pause as Fredrik bit the inside of his cheek to stop a sly smile emerging.

"I do."

"Then you will kiss my hand, before making your way to 3 Pitaluga Street, where you will make a short speech, which I assume you have prepared."

Heather Weller stood up, downed her tea and left three imperia on the table. At just forty years old, many deemed her too young to be a party leader, even those in her own party deemed her not suitable to leader the Unionists. Not working class enough.

It was only a quick walk to the Waterbus Station. She could afford a taxi, but always chose to ride the Waterbus, it made her look more working class, for the papers. And besides, the city lived off the sea, and she lived on the other side of the harbour. It was almost more practical.

She had time to think it over, what they were doing. If it worked, they would be geniuses. If it didn't they might possibly be the biggest fools in the history of the islands. She didn't know, picking up the phone, she called her executive assistant.

"Shelia, it's me. Would you kindly get all the Shadow Council to meet me at party HQ tomorrow, tell them it's urgent. Also arrange a meeting of the Assembly Committee for two hours after that. Thank you."

Similar conversations were being held all around the city, from each of the party leaders. Shadow Council, Assembly Committee. Everyone needed to be on board.

It was only a short walk from the Waterbus Station to Heather Wellers house, an affluent but not posh area of Chippenhams suburbs. It was the kind of place where you weren't likely to be stabbed, but you didn't exactly know your neighbors.

She flicked on the lights and made her way to the television. Turning it on, she sat down on the sofa. That was the last action of her life.

The Florcian Party was always sold on the party, their ideals and their book. The man behind this was never really well known. The man behind this was now standing in the glare of all The Sarians, and indeed lots of Esportivas' media. The man behind it also hated the media, he hated speeches, he hated publicity.

"I am going to be short. I am going to be to the point." Fredrik Elwing spoke with venom injected into every word, making every sentance as short as possible.

"This country is going to the dogs. I am not going to spend all of my time speaking to people. I am going to spend all of my time doing something about it. No bullshit. No politics. Just actions. Do I make myself clear?

You people have been outraged by the bridge built from Yttribia our sovereign territory, The Isle of Tench. This is the biggest bridge in Esportiva. And the government didn't spot it till people were crossing it.

Well no more. I have just spoken to the Admiral of the Esportivan Fleet. I gave him one message. Admiral, bring down the bridge."

Following a dismal performance at the last Under 21 World Cup the Young Wolfs are back and better than ever. Following the last international cycle in which the Albaie national team topped all expectations Sir Mark Deberen again has led the Young Wolfs to another tournament where he could potentially beat the lingering curse on Albaie football denying an international tournament victory. Many of the team from the first team have also been brought to the Equestrian States to try and show that Albaie does have potential for its future international teams.

Kernansquillec set for DBC return

It was 11 editions ago when the Kers made their last Di Bradini Cup appearance. It's been quite a while since that 4th place finish in Valanora where the Kernansquillecans went all the way to the semi-finals unbeaten, falling to defeats against Polar Islandstates 3-0 in the semis and to a 3-2 loss against Erathore in the third place play-off.

A brand new crop of players have made the trip to Starblaydia and for the first time since Kernansquillec made their debut in DBC 17 the Green and Whites are going to have to go though a qualifying round. Darvale will be first up. The paths of the two sides have never crossed at any level, by Darvale are expected to be the Green & White's biggest opponents in Qualifying Group 7. The first game of the group could well prove to be the decider in who goes on to qualify, the 1st placed team being the only one guaranteed to make it to the actual group stage. 2nd placed teams still stand a 3 in 10 chance of making it but Kernansquillec won't want to take risks like that.

A break between the first and second matches will hopefully be good news for the Kers as they will head into the Filopines match looking for a win. The pigeons usually play with a lot of attacking intent, but the bookies are expecting them to struggle in the group against Kernansquillec and Darvale. However, the Rushmori side could well be looking for revenge after Kernansquillec's senior side just edged them out of a Copa Rushmori Round of 16 tie on goal difference.

One key area for Kernansquillec will be the forwards. Indeed, Kernansquillec's front four are all starters in the senior side that made it to the World Cup playoffs. Noupen and Lilac are also starters for Guingamp who have had good runs in UICA competitions the past two seasons. Most defenses, made up of fairly inexperienced players, could well struggle and may even be terrified of a front line that has given some of the World's best sides a decent test.

However the rest of the Green and White's team will be making their U21 début. The back-line includes Cressac who has first team experiance and the two sixes, Zorm and O'Connor were in the World Cup and Copa Rushmori squads, but didn't get much playing time. Still, for an U21 side this Kernansquillecan team is looking strong on paper and considering that the Kernansquillecans have always reached the quarter-finals at the very least when they have played in the DBC, many Green Stallion fans will be hoping this team keeps up that impressive record.

One final piece of news: the traditional Kernansquillec kit, made by MytaStar Sportswear, will be back in use for this tournament after K Kits produced a one-off Copa Rushmori kit for the senior team. However, rumors are that this could well be the final outing of the famous green kit as the KERFA look to K Kits to produce a Kernansquillecan made and designed kit of the national sides. K Kits already produce kits for all professional domestic sides.

James: Hello and welcome back to Talking Footy where we move our attention to the Di Bradini Cup where in Starblaydia the Eaglets will soon be competing in the qualifying rounds as they look to gain glory and exhibit Blouman youth football on the international stage. Joining me is coach of the winning side in the 26th Di Bradini Cup Lewis Helstrom, welcome Lewis.
Lewis: Pleasure to be here, James

James: So James the Starblaydi FA has decided to expand the entrants this time and have instituted a qualifying stage, is this a good idea?
Lewis: Certainly we have seen many talented U21 teams in the past lose out because they only allowed 32 teams and I think that has hindered the competitiveness and spectacle of the cup. This not only gives teams the right to be competing in the actual cup but also exposes these young men to international experience and the need to do well in qualifying rounds which will only prove useful when they move to the bigger and more expansive World Cup.

James: Despite that, twenty-seven teams have been given automatic entry into the cup on what appears to be nothing more than a random choice. I can’t see how that is now not hindering others.
Lewis: I’m not going to try and guess the SFA’s thinking, my first guess was that it was based on last year’s entrants. But as I said this time it is more inclusive these 30 teams that have to qualify will now earn the right to be in the cup where as before they may not have even been able to participate, if they are good enough to be in the cup and better than those whom have automatic placings they will prove that.

James: Alright, well let’s move on to the team, where team manager Edward Luckon has selected his team of 21 players. And it would appear that he is going for the 4-2-3-1 formation vastly different to what our international teams tend to do.
Lewis: It is a different set up but it is one that is slowly expanding into the top levels of Blouman Football, with a number of top teams adopting it as their main formation, and it was this formation that allowed Edwards U21 Promdranian side win the U21 Imperial Cup. It is hardly a surprise that he is taking this formation and his style into the Di Bradini Cup.

James: Any standouts for the players he has selected?
Lewis: He has taken Link Holdson and Karlus Uacreligh straight from his Promdranian side and is pairing them up again in the defensive midfield positions. They performed well and the two players link up nicely. It will be these two that will make it hard for opposing teams to set up successful attacks. Oliver Badger will be the main playmaker for the squad and will carry out that job well he does go on the offensive too much for my liking but with only one striker that will be to their advantage.

James: And what about Nathan Fish?
Lewis: Well it was a no brainer after winning the golden boot in the Imperial Cup despite the third place finish for his squad he was the most likely player to be selected, though I wouldn’t expect as many goals, he won’t have the support as he did with the Holchmain team which will result in fewer goals.

James: Any surprises in squad?
Lewis: I must be frank here but Peter Mousen is not the best keeper and neither is his back up Mark Nagen, it’s a serious lapse in judgement on Luckon’s part and I’m still not sure why he has taken them.

James: Who would’ve you picked?
Lewis: Josh Jones; he is an up and coming star and has plenty of raw talent. Last season he played six games for Jollipville Athletic and he showed up their number one keeper. He pulled out some amazing saves while under constant pressure.

James: But Jones didn’t even perform in the Imperial Cup
Lewis: There is no requirement that they must have played in the Imperial Cup first, his omission from the Truingen side was also a bad move and helps to explain why they finished bottom.

James: Strong words, how do you think the Eaglets will perform in this Cup?
Lewis: I think they have what it takes to qualify, their main hurdle will be beating Sicoutimont but I think it is entirely possible. It will depend on who they face in the group stage, they are certainly a lot of strong teams out there so I will reserve my prediction until we see who they are facing.

James: You don’t think they will win?
Lewis: It’s going to be tough they are a strong side but I fear that there are a few weak points which will hamper them I think they will do well but I can’t see another Cup coming home. I will also point out that when I coached the squad everyone wrote us off, we weren’t meant to make it past the group stage and we won the thing so it isn’t impossible.

James: Sometimes dreams do come true, thank you for your time Lewis. When we return we will meet the new Director of Football Strategy for the FFB. Luke Nawsen will be conducting the interview, stay tuned.

Side notes: The Blouman Empire is a confederation of nations each with their own football associations that come together under the FFB (similar to UEFA with its member associations) each year these associations have a competition with their ‘national’ teams competing (similar to the Euro Cup) this is known as the Imperial Cup. As such they also have a U21 and U18 Imperial Cup.

The Furellum team were practicing, out on the field. They were taking it in turns to run on to the ball and take a shot at goal when Volund Dragos looked up. "Hey guys, it's snowing!" he shouted. It was indeed, large white flakes falling softly to the ground. One of them landed on top of Adam Vukoja's head. He wiped it off and stood staring at it. After a while, he said "Guys, that's not snow!" It's solidified ether!"
The rest of the team stared at him, and Dome Loke asked what solidified ether was.
"Ether is the stuff in the atmosphere that wizards use to make magic. But there shouldn't be any in this dimension, and finding it in solidified form is rare enough in Furellum..."
He was interrupted by a cheer from Vidarr, who had just scored an unlikely goal against Gavrilovic. The baboon keeper hadn't been paying attention; instead he stood stone still, staring at the sky.
As one, the rest of the team looked up. Adam uttered a low whistle, and Ragnar Asbjorn threw a heavy paw over his eyes. Levi Kolar muttered two words that summed up what they were all thinking. "Oh, No..."

Across the sky, directly over their heads, was a hole. It looked like the sky was made of glass, and something had crashed into the glass and shattered it. Across the sky were dark, splintering cracks, meeting around a jagged edge hole directly above the playing field. In the hole was something. It looked like another sky, but dark and stormy, with clouds of lurid pink swirling in a vortex, and flashes of blue lightning. Drops of solid ether rained down from the puncture.

The team stood frozen to the spot, unable to move. They didn't move as the solid ether began to accumulate in a pile and slowly take the form of an old man. As soon as the last ether drop landed on his head, he became whole and walked over to the goal as if nothing unusual was happening and gently pushed Gavrilovic out of the goal mouth. Picking up the ball, he waved his hand over the goal mouth, and between the framework appeared a silver sheen, like a wall of water. The old man threw the ball into the portal and it disappeared. He sat down and waited, while the rest of the team stood in place like stone statues.

The surface of the portal rippled and out of the goal came a horse with eight legs. Behind him marched a sphinx. On the sphinx's head was perched an owl. The old man nodded to the trio, then reached into his coat and pulled out a coaching whistle. He blew on it, and the team began to move. Gavrilovic slowly staggered to his feet, wondering how he got on the ground. Then he saw the odd trio in front of the goal. "Tell me I'm dreaming." he muttered. To his astonishment, the owl replied. "Hoot! Who is dreaming, and who is the dreamer? All that you call reality is but a dream, a scene on the lid of a dreamer's eye. Hoot!"
"Or perhaps not." responded the sphinx, fixing the keeper with a stare. "Are you a man dreaming you are a baboon, or a baboon dreaming you're a man? Answer that riddle!"
Gavrilovic covered his face with his hands. "I don't know..." he murmured weakly. Just then, Thor Kokot rushed over. Seeing the horse, he fell at it's feet. "Sliepnir!" he cried, "Great Lord! I am your servant." The horse stamped it's two frontmost feet, and there was the sound of thunder and a brief flash of lightning.
"I am Sliepnir, humble servant." Said the horse. "I have a task for you and your companions. A quest which will be sung in Valhalla, and in the Gimill hall for everafter."
Kolar shouted "Don't listen to him Thor!" But Thor had already raised his head to look into his god's eyes, and said, in a clear voice that echoed around the field, said "I am your to obey, O mighty Sliepnir. What is our quest?"
The owl flew over to land on Sliepnir's head. "Hoot! Land, trees, people, sky; all a dream on the dreamer's eye. Awake the dreamer, and the world will vanish. Seek the fish that is no fish, that swims in water that is no water."
"Answer that riddle!" cried the sphinx, and broke into paroxysms of laughter.
Adam stepped forward and fixed his eyes on the owl. "I don't know which dimension you've come from, but is clear that you are a demon from another dimension. What is it you want from us, tell me plainly, or I will use my magic to banish you from whence you came."
"Hoot! No magic, no magic. The dreamer has dreamed it; you have no choice to obey. You are all part of the dream you see, same as we three. Awaken the dreamer, and all will be clear."
Sliepnir shook his mane, reared up on his four hind legs, and shouted "The sun darkens, earth in ocean sinks, fall from heaven the bright stars!" And the horse-god turned, and charged away into the silvery portal, taking the owl with him. The sphinx, rolling around on the grass, gathered its feet underneath it and followed them.

Behind the team, the old man blew his whistle again. The team froze. The old man stood still and raised his arms, and called out loud in a strange and hideous language. Above, in the crack in the sky, the pink whirlwind descended in wreaths of blue fire. It touched the ground, sweeping up the frozen forms of Furellum's players. The old man stood in the eye of the storm, untouched as it raged around him. Then the whirlwind rose up, taking the players with it, back through the whole in the sky. The crack closed, and the old man stood on alone on the pitch, surrounded by piles of solid ether. He muttered a few more words in his strange language, and the piles took on forms, becoming exact replicas of the Furellum players. They stood still, unmoving, as the old man walked off. Just on the edge of the pitch, he turned and blew his whistle, and the players came to life.

"I scored!" yelled Vidarr, raising his hands in triumph.
Gavrilovic stood looking at the ball in the goal, a confused look on his face.
"You okay?" Adam asked him.
"I...was distracted. Thought I saw something" said Gavrilovic, looking up at the sky. "Must have been nothing."
The team continued their practice. None of them noticed, on the edge of the field, an old man watching them.

This was the arrival of the New Kytlerians. Even the kits said so.

Image

A team of agile, patient, and fragile young players anchored by a man who was anything but, Arthur Vilhjalmsson. Only two outfielders in the starting XI were over 75kg; Vilhjalmsson cleared that bar by a full 30kg. It was just different enough that one could see it working in spite of its obvious concerns.

In the first fifteen minutes, it didn't. Just eight minutes in, a long diagonal ball by Jurgis Venclova flew over the head of diminutive right-back Derek York-Alney and into the path of Stefan Hostmann, who stroked the ball easily past a shellshocked Dings Izorigor in the Kytlerian goal. Seven minutes later, Hostmann scored again from an almost identical move, and Buyan were 2-0 up. It was almost merciful when York-Alney twisted his ankle three minutes later and had to be replaced by Carlton Cottee, who at least stands 180cm tall.

The Kytlerians then, unexpectedly, took control of the game, which sounds bizarre for a team 2-0 down, but their patience with the ball demonstrated a confidence that goals would come, and that Buyan were best denied by being deprived of the oxygen of possession. The turning point came three minutes before half-time, when Gledius Justs was sent off for two bookable offenses - both aggravated late tackles on Aloysius Schrijnemakers, a forward even shorter than York-Alney but full of agility and dribbling skills. With just two defenders now on the field, manager Sirius Hope hit the panic button and replaced Venclova with Jutte Hulsvist. The team quickly lost creativity and resorted to parking the proverbial bus in front of the Kytlerian goal. The Kytlerians, despite still going into the break two goals down, remained patient. Space would come, and Schrijnemakers would invariably find it. Sure enough, four minutes after the restart, a lofted through ball from Kendrick Muir-Wells freed Schrijnemakers on the edge of the box, with only Hulsvist and goalkeeper Erbald Saldlund in front of him, and he left the substitute defender flat-footed with a 270-degree "McGeady spin" before chipping over the onrushing Saldlund. As debut international goals for the #NewKytlerians go, that one was #OMG.

For most of the remaining 40 minutes, Buyan had ten men behind the ball, most of them in or around the penalty area. The Kytlerians sacrificed central defender Billy Abel for attacking mdfielder Benedetto Colombo, but the Kytlerians were still unable to get through for the most part. When they did, they were denied by two fine saves from Saldlund to deny Schrijnemakers, and by the outside of the post from a Muir-Wells free kick. A breakthrough was richly deserved, and it finally came with six minutes to go from a penalty, as Hugo Rademaker was tripped by Maxim Dziuba just inside the box. Muir-Wells' penalty sent Saldlund the wrong way, hit the inside of the post, and spun in. Justice was done.

The winner would not be forthcoming, but the Kytlerians know victory over The Sarian gives them a real chance of making the Di Bradini Cup proper.

THE EMPIRE TIMES

Luckon's Selection Questioned

The Eaglets had a convincing 2-0 win against Caek of the Wolfen as they seek qualification into the Di Bradini Cup, however, despite the strong dominant display with goals from both Nathan Fish and Oscar Battle not everyone is happy with the chosen team. Chairman of the Regarmar Association of Football (RAF) Baron James Ucchino has publicly criticised Edward Luckon's selection pointing out the over-representation of Promdranian footballers and the lack of representation of footballers from other parts of the Empire. "It is unbelievable to me that five players from the Promdranian team were selected while not one Regarmari player was selected" Ucchino stated in a press confrence from RAF headquarters. Ucchino laid out his plan for all future international squads in which he asked for all selections to be done by an expert panel rather then just the manager, a change which would be a big change from Blouman tradition. He also floated the idea of a quota "With twelve association members of the FFB, there should always be at least one player from each of these associations selected, only then can we call ourselves a true Blouman team".

When questioned on Ucchino's criticism Luckon simply stated "I select the players I think will perform the best and I will continue to do so". While Luckon refused to be drawn into the controversy others were quick to be express their opinion in defense of Luckon; Holchmain Association of League Football Chairman Sir Oliver Jaroson scoffed at the idea "A quota would severely limit our capability of performing to an appropriate standard on the world stage and hinder our chances of success". Football commentator Donald Weston was more direct "If Ucchino was serious about having his players in the international squad he would look at fixing the poor state of football in Regarmar instead of whinging that none of his players were selected". The FFB would not comment with the Chairman's office issuing a press release that read "The FFB at this time has no opinion on the matter, the only current requirement is that all players selected for international squads comply with the requirements of the tournament's governing body. Should any FFB member wish to change this it can be raised through the appropriate channels at the next FFB board meeting".

Despite the strong debate back at home the Eaglets was not showing any signs of it slowing down their campaign as they focused on their next game against Sicoutimont. The Eaglets know that a win will assure them qualification into the final while a loss will mean that they will be depending on a favourable result in the last game between Sicoutimont and Caek of Wolfen to ensure their Di Bradini campaign isn't over before it starts.

The team all regained consciousness at the same time. They staggered to their feet, slowly taking stock of their surroundings. "What happened?" asked Ion Funar, sniffing the air.
"A dream..." murmured Ragnar. "Surely it was just a dream?"
"Afraid not." replied Adam. "Have a look at this." He reached into his short and pulled out a pendant, onto which was slung a loop of metal. It emitted a strong blue light. "It's mythril. Reacts to background ether and gives off light - it's what they use in thaumometers. In Starblaydia it was black; here the reading is astronomical."
Dome said nervously "I don't think we're in AO anymore, Ragnar."
"Or in any dimension we know." said Adam. "That hole in the sky looked awfully like a temporal cosmic rift to me. Which is seriously bad. And I mean BAD."
Levi sighed. "Ok. So to take stock. We've just witnessed another dimension crash into our own, and we've been sent on a quest to find a fish that isn;t a fish and wake a dreamer whose dreaming everything by a crazy owl and Thor's deity. The next thing we know we're somewhere completely different, in what seems to be a different dimension. Correct?"
"That about sums it up." replied Adam.
"Right. Well the first thing we need to do is find out where we are. It looks like we're in a room - there must be a door somewhere."
The team spread out and began to examine their surroundings. They were in a square room, with a low roof and walls of a brown substance that they couldn't identify. Ion Funar tapped it with his paw. "It's soft" the capybara said, and experimentally touched his large front teeth to the wall. He nibbled away at the surface, and it gave easily enough. Chewing the substance, he stood thoughtfully for a second and then declared. "It's cardboard!"
"Cardboard? It's a giant box!" Mikhail ran to the wall and pushed it hard, but nothing moved. "Perhaps the roof?" suggested Ragnar. "That's an idea. Give us a boost."

With the assistance of Ragnar and Mihajlovic, Mikhail was able to lift the corner of the roof and scramble out. Soon the rest of the team were out, Gavrilovic and Vidarr lending a hand to pull out the two players serving as ladders.
Climbing up on top of the now vacated box, Gavrilovic looked at it. "Hey guys, there's writing here. Listen to this 'Di Bradini Cup 31/Under-21 World Cup 52 Player Sets: Furellum'. What do you make of that?"
Decebal Ozolinsh said, "Sounds like a figurine kit. Only, we were in the box. I don't like it."
"Guys, you need to see this!" the call came from behind them. Mladen was standing on what seemed to be the edge of a cliff, and was waving excitedly. The team hurried over. A gasp came in unison from 22 throats as they peered over the edge.

Below them was a ledge, and another, each as massive as the one they were on. And it occurred to them, one after the other, that they were not on solid earth but on wood, and this was no cliff but a shelf on a unit in a giant's room. One by one they looked up, and what type of room it was.

They could not see the far side, so immense was it's width. Around the walls were other shelving units, stacked with boxes just like the one they'd climbed out of. In the centre of the room was a ring shaped table, and every inch of it was covered in game boards of every conceivable form.
Levi stepped away from the edge. "This place is crazy. Have we shrunk, or is this a world of giants? Either way, we have to find a way to get off this shelf and find that damned dreamer so we can get back to our own world."
"There looks to be an elevator of sorts over there." ventured Zhenya, pointing.

There certainly was an elevator. It was a simple platform suspended by driving wheels to four upright posts, but it was an elevator all right. The platform was big enough to take the entire team, and Mordecai found a switch that made it descend. It was a long journey, but eventually they found themselves at the bottom. Stepping off, they saw to their amazement a railway station. It was their size, and on approaching the platform, they noticed a chicken in a guard's uniform slumbering in a chair. Levi hailed him. "Hello there. Can you tell us where we are?" The chicken jumped up and stared at them in amazement. "Wha..? Who, how? How'd you get here?"
"We're not certain." replied Levi. "We woke up in a box..."
"A box? You're players? But you're not supposed to move around until you get on the board! This is most irregular."
"If you could just tell us what is going on, please" said Levi.
The chicken picked up a notebook and flicked through it. "All in good time. Team, tournament. Got to find your place."
Levi looked at Adam. The wizard's face reflected the uncertainty Levi was feeling. This railway guard obviously new more than he was letting on. Levi felt a hoof on his shoulder, and turned to see Moisey standing beside him. The goat nodded, and said to the chicken. "We were playing in the Di Bradini cup - 31st edition. We're from Furellum."
The chicken flicked through his notebook. "Ah. You're early. You'll just have to wait. That's what you get for not staying in your box."
"When will the train arrive?" asked Moisey. But the chicken through his wings up in the air and rushed into the signal box. "No questions!" he yelled. "You're not supposed to ask questions!" And he slammed the door shut and threw the bolt.
Moisey sighed. "We'll get no more out of him. I guess we'll just have to wait for the train."
Decebal muttered. "Where will that lead us? I have a bad feeling about this."

Buyan's 3-2 defeat to The Sarian ensured that the Kytlerians had a very clear condition for their match against the latter; win, or go home.

"This is exactly the sort of experience I think we need," captain Arthur Vilhjalmsson told reporters. "If we play like we did after going 2-0 down in the first game, we will win. But if we start that badly again, we will undoubtedly lose. We have to prepare for the high balls, as well as being sure to retain possession. We can win this match, we know we can."

Striker Hugo Rademaker said that he was expecting a "different challenge" from The Sarian. "They play a conventional 4-4-2, so we might have a bit less space. However, they still look to attack at every opportunity, and their best players seem to be the forwards and also (attacking midfielder Horacio) Lopez, he's full of running and creativity." Manager Michael Robinson agreed with his striker's assessment, adding that "we have to keep them off the ball. They send the full-backs forward, the midfield is full of goals, but they do look vulnerable at the back. We can be patient against them and wait for them to make mistakes, but the moment we make a mistake, we're in real trouble." He also confirmed that Derek York-Alney would miss the remainder of the tournament: "Even if his injury is minor, in retrospect he had a terrible game and I don't think he'll want to come back - (Carlton) Cottee made such a huge difference when he came on, steadied the ship when we needed it most, and he's absolutely starting."

KERS HOPING TO QUALIFY. HOSTS HOPING FOR ANYTHING ACCEPT A 3-2 WIN

Kernansquillec's U21s will be very happy to see yesterday's result. Filopines were playing Darvale, the team that beat the Green and Whites 3-2 on the opening day. A draw or a win for Darvale would have see Kernansquillec all but eliminated for the competition. Thankfully, they lost by a single goal, 3-2.

So Kernansquillec, while still being in last place on 0 points could end tonight top of the group and qualify for the group stage proper. However, it's not quite as simple as just winning. A 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2 win would not be good enough to finish top. Most fans will be hoping for a two goal gap to make sure of the end product, instead of relying on goals scored...

But, the tournament organisers in Starblaydia could well have a massive problem on their hands. If Kernansquillec were to win by three goals to two, the three teams in Group 7 would ALL tie for 1st place. The organisers had announced that a playoff game could be held if two teams tied for first place, but with a three-way tie playing a playoff round would essentially come down to replaying the group all together. Will the organisers be really to go to such lenghts?

Other solutions are most likely being considered. Most in Kernansquillec are opposed to the tossing of a coin to decide, due to its lack of sporting merit, even if such a solution is looking most likely. The favorite way which would take less time would be a three-way penalty shoot-out. It would be complicated to organise, but it could be the most effective way of dealing with the problem.

But anyhow, most Kers fans will be hoping for an outright win to qualify for the group stage. "Four, five nil should do it". If however that isn't the case, a 3-2 win would do the trick, even if the organisers will be praying that Lady Luck doesn't go against them.

It had started to be a passion. The Sunrisians never seemed to be exactly mind-fixated on the World Cup. A loss to Valanora? Expected. A loss to Farfadillis? Close, but it happens. A loss to Audioslavia? Expected. A loss to Super-Llamaland? Weird, but it happens. Bar the always expected win, whether against teams who are slightly near their level like The Licentian Isles or out of their league wonders like The Holy Empire, the Sunrisians never seem to be that worried about the results. Whether Nagatomo or Abuda will shine near the trophy or whether they'll bow out to Eura at the Round of 16, the Vaporeon Nation is always close to the team, but more because they want to follow, not because they want to win.

You'd think that if this was the picture, then we would probably devote ourselves to another sport like ice hockey. Yeah, that seems feasible enough. The Hockey Team has been a bit lacking as of late, but we still like the sport we even hosted a World Cup of theirs. But even on ice, the fans are there for the team, not even worrying about the trophies. Even having one of Esportiva's best hockey teams doesn't seem to affect them a lot. So... Baseball? Nah. Patinsball? Working on it.

The pride of the country is its' Youth Squad. Not that Hawk or Sioux will ever lose power to Pauritanoeca or Felipe Pato on relevance. The Sunrisians just have more love for their younglings. And why wouldn't them? At major level, the Sunrisians are an upcoming side. At youth level, the Sunrisians have, adding both Under-15 and Under-21 World Cup levels, won more trophies than teams like Polar Islandstates, Taeshan, Kiryu-shi, Wight and Equestrian States. And if you don't even count the Under-15 ones, the current champion Vilita doesn't even have a Di Bradini Cup. It's the reason why Northern Sunrise Islands has a league devoted solely for Youth Talent. That's why the NSICA gets some light every football season.

The Vaporeons have Project +90, period. The unstopped, unbarred, single entity that tries their best to make new stars every year. Other countries may make a reasonable point that their youth academies are better, of course: why would a country with no history on Youth Cup victories claim to be unstopped? Well, don't let our mocked-up squads at the Youth Cup fool you. It's a privilege to start your career at Project +90. And if you know what's good for you, regardless of whether you live near the toxic wastelands of Sorthern Northland, if the Goose Bay is your home, if your place now lives under Esvorpita's rule when it comes to football, if you hail from the LigAnaia stomping grounds, if you live under the guiding eyes of Celestia or if you're just some meters away from the Liu Keng Mau stadium where the Project started; Project +90 is our biggest jewel.

If you feel like filling in the request to try out at Project +90 and start your career, you know exactly where to knock. If you don't, prepare to face not only the brainchild, but the other ones who have already joined. And welcome to your nights at Starblaydia if you pass the qualifiers. Whether they'll be sweet or sour, it'll depend on us, though.

"Did the Sunrise just made advertising on a RP?"
"If that doesn't mean punishment, you're damn right!"
Tails... Watch out, you're gonna crash, aaaaah!
