The description someone gave me of it in 2010-2011 is probably different from its state right now... But yes, it seemed better or not significantly worse than a shitton of other Latin American countries.

Shortages of all kinds of products and even electricity, looting, crime - if that's your perfect socialist state, give me a capitalist one.

People actually believed Hugo Chavez was a socialist?

North American States wrote:Now, on Venezuela. Venezuela is a classic latin american story, populists running wild and ruining a nation that could be very very rich. Venezuela is Argentina 2.0, Argentina was at one time one of the wealthiest countries on earth and blew it all because of lousy statesmanship, and it´s a real shame too since it could be (and was) so much more. The only thing im surprised is Maduro not pulling a "falklands" to try and prop up his failing regime....

Exactly. It's a characteristic of nearly all governments that call themselves socialist. Their idea of 'redistribution' is fascinating. They steal from all wealthy people who are not part of the ruling party, and hand out what they've stolen to the groups in society that can help them stay in power, no matter how much damage that does to the economy. That's how Chavez managed to pull it off - steal, favour friends, steal, favour friends. This would have happened if he was still in charge - in fact, it started happening when he was in charge. The government of Venezuela has reached a point where it has run out of other people's money.
