Okay, so before you declare my post impossible, let me include my reasoning for the maneuver GOram, first, I was already in a right turn, but a less than critical one, upon seeing your craft, Jonah continued on along a harder turn in order to get a better view and to assess the situation Upon deciding that he no longer had the option of diving to escape, Jonah flipped his plane further to the right to put it in a dive, now, it is in position for a hammerhead maneuver, but instead of completing the hammerhead, and instead of diving, because both could be countered, Jonah broke the flow of air across his nose and fuselage by slamming his rudder hard right forcing his plane left against the momentum it was carrying, breaking the flow of air along the fuselage and now sending it at an intensely oblique angle into the fuselage. In order to fully break control and send the Spitfire into a spin, Jonah flips it back over now to put himself "on top" of his plane, and with this, he entirely transfers the flow of air from an oblique angle to an entirely perpendicular angle.

With this now happening the right wing has stalled almost entirely while the left wing maintains a small amount of airspeed, and with the amount of speed having dropped dramatically, he now is put into a right near-flat spin that gives him the appearance of being no longer in control although all he has to do is utilize the rudder once more in conjunction with the ailerons to bring air over the flight controls and thus speed up the plane and put it back in his control. It is a delicate task however and a highly advanced maneuver, but part of the reason Jonah is using this is because the flat-spin, though seemingly unaffected by flight controls, actually can be affected because Jonah has put it in a state of appearing to be a flat-spin whereas it is rather a right-heavy spin. On top of this, Jonah has experience with near flat-spins having survived two before due to his plane being inadequately balanced and thus setting his turn, in a low cloud bank into in all actuality, a near flat-spin. When he realized what was happening, he redistributed the weight as best he could by shifting out of his seat and also dropping a case of drink he happened to of had in the back. The drink was illegal anyways and he passed it off to the South African safari men whom had ordered it as having been confiscated by customs officials.

With the weight offset, he was able to recover and upon reading more into the phenomena, he learned that the flat-spin could be recovered from by setting the weight off center. By making his Spitfire more heavy in the back, he actually was creating the conditions for this maneuver the entire time. This is Jonah's specialty, to utilize spins in order to appear out of control while maintaining a degree of control. With the Spit now simply waiting to be put into a downward dive, Jonah only needs to loosen his restraints a little and shift his weight forward in order to put his plane back in his control. I wasn't planning on using this maneuver until a mission, but I figure now would be a good time to use it. Stanford wants to see skill, well how about a novice pilot pulling out of a near irrecoverable spin?

Stanford's Story: Reaping the Whirlwind: Part V

Postby Goram » Mon Nov 04, 2013 3:13 pm

A fully laden Avro Lancaster weighed almost 70,000 pounds and taxiing one along the 50 foot wide perimeter track was not easy - especially in the dark. If one of the Lancasters were to stray from the concrete, it's undercarriage would certainly sink into the ground. From here, it would be almost impossible to move, destroying the coordination of the raid. Thus the pilots focused on the lights of the aircraft ahead, using the brakes, rudders and carefully judged bursts of power to control the mighty bombers. The entire process was carried out in radio silence, for the crews knew all too well that the Luftwaffe would certainly be listening.

Stanford focused on the navigation lights of the bomber ahead, never taking his eyes off them until they stopped having turned onto the active run way. Seconds later, they began to move again, picking up speed quickly before rising slowly into the air. This, of course, was Stanford's cue to to taxi forward, onto the run way. Touching the brakes, he halted the Lancaster on the run way threshold. Here he would be held by the control tower's red lamp, until the previous aircraft had suitably vacated the area. As soon as Stanford saw the lamp extinguish, before being replaced with a green, he closed his eyes momentarily. This was, as they say, it. Stanford took one hand off the control column and eased all four throttles open, as the flight engineer disengaged the parking brake. The Lancaster leapt forward and out of the corner of his eye, Stanford could just make out the small group of station staff who had turned out to wave the bombers off. Stanford took his hand off the throttle, needing all of his strength on the column, in order to get the bomber in the air. The flight engineer replaced Stanford's hand with his own, holding the throttles wide open as he called out the air speed.

Sergeant Peter Haywood, barely 20 years of age, was a relatively experienced flight engineer. After 17 completed trips, he could make the Merlins purr and quite regularly, he could pre-empt the pilot, doing what he wanted before he said it. A man like Peter Haywood was just the sort of fellow that could make the first few ops easier on a inexperienced, at least as far as operational bombers go, pilot such as Douglas Stanford.

95...100...105...110

Haywood called out, reading off the airspeed as it climbed steadily. To Stanford, the end of the 2,000 yard run way looked awfully close indeed. He applied back pressure as the bomber eclipsed 110 miles per hour, and the huge machine began to float skywards. Almost immediately, Haywood retracted the landing gear. If anything went wrong now, all aboard would be killed without even a shadow of a chance of escape as the 14,000 pounds of bombs and 2,154 gallons of fuel went up at the same time. The veteran bomb aimer, David Cole (who lay in the nose, despite the fact that it was against all regulation), had seen this happen once before. The explosion that had occurred on impact was, he had said, the most spectacular and horrifying thing he had even seen.

At 130 MPH, Stanford began to climb the bomber gently sky ward, building up air speed all the time. The heavily laden Lancaster used up all 2,000 yards of run way, barely avoiding the trees on the perimeter fence, scraping by with barely 30 feet to spare. At 500 feet and 175 MPH indicated, the Lancaster's most efficient climbing speed, Stanford retracted the flaps.

As the Lancaster cut through the night sky, climbing towards a bombing altitude of roughly 20,000 feet, Stanford switched off his navigation lights. From here on out, they would be in the dark, flying only off the instrument panel and well honed night vision.

"Pilot to navigator"

Stanford said over the intercom

"Give me a heading, Dick."

Navigator to pilot

came the reply, only seconds later

Turn zero-nine-zero magnetic.

Rear gunner here skip, there's another Lancaster slightly below us and a second off the port wing

The warning had been a just one. By now, the stream had stream had spread itself out a little. The first pathfinder and intruder Mosquitoes were already well out of British airspace, with the leading bombers, equipped with high explosive and more TI's, were close on their heels. However, with over 800 aircraft in the Lincolnshire skys tonight, collisions were always a danger and it paid to be vigilant.

Leeuwarden night fighter station,
Northern Holland,
Some time later

Willi Bauers sat with his leather boots on a coffee table, the peaked cap of a Luftwaffe's office sat lopsidedly on his head and a cigarette hung limply from the corner of his mouth. He wasn't much to look at, but then again none of the aircrew in that godforsaken corner of Holland were very much to look at. They didn't stand on ceremony here. Well pressed uniforms and military pomp wouldn't make a man's night vision better. Nor would it make the Tommy's any easier to find and catch.

The simple fact of the matter was the Hauptmann Bauers was an expert night fighter, with two years experience under his belt. In that time, he'd racked up twenty two victories, flying first an uncontrolled Bf.110C before moving onto more advanced things. Now, as second in command at Leeuwarden, he operated on Junkers 88R equipped with Lichtenstein radar. The spindly antennae radar set were susceptible to the rain and played merry hell with the handling of the already heavy fighter. However, they certainly made it an awful lot easier to find Tommy in the dark.

I've got a good feeling tonight, Willi, my boy! I'm going to get at least ten of them myself!

The voice came from an Oberleutnant, who came bounding across the room. Like all the other aircrew in the hut, he was dressed in full flying gear, ready to go at a moment's notice. Willi took a last drag on the cigarette before stubbing it out in the ash tray next to him.

"Friedrich, if you shoot half as well as you talk shit, the Terror fleigers don't stand a chance."

Bauer replied, to a half hearted chuckle from some of the other aircrew in the room.

Just you wait and see, you bastard - my superchargers have turned up! Oberfeldwebel Heusinger had them fitted this morning. There won't be a Tommy in the sky that can hide from me tonight! Just you wait and se-

The Oberleutnant's excited ramblings were cut short, much to the relief of Willi, by red light and a voice floating over the PA.

Enemy aircraft spotted over the sea. Hauptmann Bauer, Oberleutnant Kraft, Oberleutnant Voss and Leutnant Freyend report for immediate take off.

"Well, Friedrich, my friend"

The Hauptmann began, in a teasing tone, as he stood up from his chair

"Some of us have work to do tonight. Keep the seat warm for me, won't you?"

Friedrich, looking less than pleased, sank down into the Hauptmann's chair and lit a cigarette. He was disappointed not to be among the first called into action, but he knew it was only a matter of time. Sooner rather than later, every single one of Leeuwarden's pilots would be called out to fight.

Concurrently

The first of the Pathfinders were now approaching the target area. Cruising to high and to fast for flak or fighters, these Oboe equipped Mosquitoes were virtually impossible for the Germans to stop. This aircraft was no different. Armed not with bombs, but with target indicators, the Pathfinders were critical to the success of the operation.

Almost 25,000 feet above Stahlstadt, the hydraulic bomb doors of this first Mosquito slid silently open. The aircraft was now on it's final bomb run into the city and would be the first of over 800 aircraft that would be visiting that night. The Navigator was staring at his Oboe set intently and when the two circles on the screen intersected, he immediately tapped the pilot on the shoulder.Seconds later, the bomb load of the first Pathfinder tumbled free of the bomb bay. This aircraft carried only one flare, a Pink Pansy as it was colloquially known. It looked, for all the world, to be a regular 4,000 pound medium capacity bomb - however, instead of amatol, the casing had been filled with rubber, benzene and phosphorus. The device went off on impact, igniting with a massive pink flash and burning with an intense pink flame. The flash of pink on an otherwise dark ground drew the other five Mosquitoes like moths to a flame. Originally there had been eight Mosquitoes out tonight, but two had been forced to turn back with engine trouble. The surviving five dropped their green and red flares directly on top of the original pink.

On the ground, the dull sounds of the air raid warning sirens began to wail through the night air. Uniformed soldiers ran through the streets, desperate to get to their posts and civilians scrambled for cover. Most took refuge in cellars, deep beneath houses. Whilst these deep cellars were practically bomb proof, if the building above them was demolished in would then become a race against time for the rescuers to dig them out. Too long and the air in the shelters would run out, turning the place of refuge into a tomb.

Stahlstadt was under prepared for an air raid - the emergency services were inexperienced and slow to react. Flak was nowhere near as heavy as other cities, such as Bremen or Munich. Thus far, the RAF had shown them little attention, despite the industry in the city, preferring to focus on the Ruhr Valley. Many had thought that the Terror Fliegers would never come. Tonight, their lack of preparation would come back to haunt them. The city and those that survived, would be a shadow of their former self in the morning.
