Well.... the rules dont explicitly make provisions for franchised factions, so I dont see why not. Remember, however, this is a story based creation rp, and it would be greatly appreciated it you attempted to make your own faction, so that you could personalize and master it. Remember, this is a faction you will have to RP for a long time, and the real question is if you will be happy ripping off somebody elese creation for such an rp.

Do tell.

The idea is that the race that created the Great Swarm, known simply as the Great Race, created them as a last ditch weapon to destroy the Empire once and for all. They were at first quite good, with every battle increasing their number. But once it reached a certain level, their collective consciousness sort of coagulated and partially disturbed the sleep of an ancient eldritch abomination, known as the Terror-at-Midnight or Damballah. The Swarm's collective mental capacity was at once corrupted and enslaved by Damballah, fusing with his own and creating the 'God-Consciousness'. The Great Swarm then turned on its masters, absorbing them and gaining their knowledge.

At which point the Great Swarm's attentions soon turned to the Empire.

Sounds excellent. The idea Yort and I were going to do was that the Sarthantai'd were the "Creators" from the AIs' mythology, and the race itself was descended from the military AIs that commanded the defense of Athla (aka Ethlan) as the ancestors of the Republic's population fled. Would that conflict with anything in the Swarm canon, or could the two stories perhaps be tied in somehow?

It would of course work with canon. Though are the Creators those who made the AIs? And perhaps the defense of Athla was a battle in the Empire-Swarm War?

The Creators are figures in the religion of the AIs, said to have been wiped out by "a great darkness" after molding the robots in their own image. Ethlan (Athla, the Sarthantai'd homeworld) is now a sacred world to them, with only priests allowed on the surface. The AIs, sequestered deep underground to command the automated defenses, were one of the only forms of life to survive the Swarm's final assault.

The planet was lost and effectively glassed, but the defenders stalled the attack long enough for the colony ships carrying the refugees who would go on to found the republic to escape. The AIs survived because the Swarm did not recognize them as life, and moved on from the now barren world, leaving them to their own devices.

Of course, I'm not an op, so don't quote me on this.
And do take care to not make it a mirror image. If you want to do space marines, polish it up a bit, and make it uniquely your own. So long as you can write a good story with it.

"The Swarm arrived on Athla in numbers that shrouded the sun. It is said that shimmering, black rain fell for forty days, spreading disease and mutation across the planet, heralding the storm to come."

I am thinking that the Battle for Athla was what taught the Swarm that it could not rely on. . . well, swarming, yet it is considered a momentous and joyous occasion, as so many new minds joined the God-Consciousness. But machines have no soul, they cannot be one with Damballah. So they are useless, and not to be bothered with.

No definable timeframe exists; Earth, as the planet we know it, doesn't exist. Since we don't have a fixed point in time to measure from, this RP is set in the present. The present as it exists for several varied civilizations and races, that is.

Alright, Finally finished my APP.
[spoiler=Species App]

Species Name: Nezon
Appearance: Largely varies based on the Host automatons function. The most common forms are the Cuboid form (They look like Star Craft 2 Marines but with cuboid limbs), and the Skelton form (Necrons)
Biology and anatomy:Wires, computer for a brain, everything a health computer needs to function and its own power source.
Height: Varies
Weight: Varies
Relative survivability: They tend to live forever if not bothered, but after 200 years their mind will start to deteriorate to the point when they go into a state which is comparable to madness. In an Early form of shame they don’t really regonise they don’t like telling this to organics. Once and Nezon goes “mad” it is called a Rouge Nezon, and will eventually degrade until they literally cannot move or think.
They tend to die if their main computer located in their head or their power source located in their chest is destroyed.

Natural Defenses/Abilities: Made of a dense metal, however they are not immortal and will die if their power source or main computer is destroyed.
Unnatural abilities:

Respiratory Gas: None
Base composite Element: Metal

Base Form and Ethnic Variations: Base form is the Cuboid as described, there are many forms suited to tasks
=========================================================
Life Span: 200 then they become rouge, 100 more years untill they reach catatonic stage.
Reproduction: The AI will Duplicate itself every 100 years, the Duplicate will be repurposed by Nexus.
Intelligence Level: 7, they have amazing knowledge just lack social skills and creativity.
Traits/Behavior/Disposition: Emotionless, however have a strong need to fulfil the goals Nexus gave them.

Type: AI
Aggression: 0
Society and Cultural information:
Fairly autonomous, they follow the goal Nexus set for them at birth to the letter. However how they do this differs from Nezon to Nezon

Important Characters: (only names are needed, and perhaps a short blurb about them.)
Nexus: Super AI and leader
Xol: Grand Nemesor of the Military
Ryti: Minister of Communications with other races.
Rez: First Nezon to gain emotions. Though he doesn't yet realize it.
I’l Probably introduce more.

[spoiler=Nation App]

My Flag
Civilization Name: Cybernetic Empire of Nezon
Civilization Age: 5,000 year

Government Type: Cybernetic collective of AI’s
Government Information: Ruled by a single Super AI called Nexus. It governs the directions the society should take and makes most large scale decisions. It allows AI’s to Micromanage their areas and make decisions on a smaller scale. The Nexus will step in and give direct orders if it sees error.
Government Status: Nothing out of the ordinary so far, just pulled out of a war with their former masters
Population: 900 Billion, 85 Systems

Home World/Capitol: Server 23: Nexus
Capital Status: Its more or less static, information is transferred, however some AI’s have started developing emptions and personalities
Notable locations and such: Nothing really, systems are named Server ____ and Planets are named based on number, so the full name of a planet would be for example “Server 15, Planet 2”
Founding Species: Nezon
Other Species: N/A
=========================================================
Society and Cultural information: The AI’s are fairly autonomous, they all work towards a common goal, but they all have different methods. Nexus is their main uniting factor.
Society Status Stable, however emotions are starting to develop
Languages Communicate using Binary, however use a form of English for communication with others.
Economy: 8
Industry: 9
Production/Construction: 8

Soopah Powah: Industry
Specialties/Advanced Sciences: Artificial intelligence, Strong metals
Strengths: Industry, production capability, very little crime, Very little unrest.
Weaknesses: Trade, Diplomacy is quiet hard with an emotionless race, Infinitely(Almost) stubborn, Social stagnation.
=========================================================
Map Claim Size: 4
Grid Coordinates: I’d like to be slightly further away from the center than most.
Map Claim Color: Grey, metallic

Holdings/Territory: 85 systems

Colonization/expansion:Expansion is done by moving asteroid space stations forward using grav beams around the system.
Because Nezon don’t breath oxygen, or any gas, they don’t require terraforming, however they usually extinguish the planet of all life to avoid organics causing problems. Usually expansion will be escorted by a few nexus Cruisers. They also cannot survive in the vacuum of space.
The full process takes several months, to make a fledgling colony, whether it will develop depends on where it is set.
=========================================================
Foreign policy: Usually keeps to themselves, however they plant to involve themselves more in diplomacy to make sure the Emotion bound organics don’t make a mess of the universe.
Diplomacy: So far rather lonely, however they plan to change that.

Technological Age: 5,000
FTL Capabilities: Short cool down, short distance.
Inter Planetary Travel Many small ships move people between systems.
=========================================================
Military Information: Factbook
Doctrine: Nexus’ commands supersede everything. The rank order is:
Nemesor, Lesser Nemsor, Overseer, Commander, SL (Squad Leader)
Fleet: Nexus Capital Ship, 8 Nexus Dreadnaughts, 24 Nexus Cruisers, 50 Nexus Frigates.
Battlefleet: 4 Nexus Dreadnoughts, 14 Nexus Cruisers, 25 Nexus Friagtes
Exploratory Fleet: 5 Nexus Cruisers, 10 Nexus Frigates
Escort fleet: 3 Nexus Cruisers
Escort Fleet High Priority: Nexus Capital ship, 4 Dreadnoughts
Army within each ship:
Dreadnought: 200,000 Nexus Infrantry, 50,000 Skirmishers, 50,000 heavy infantry. 1,000 Grav Tanks, 500 Walkers, 100 Nephilim
Cruiser: 20,000 Nexus Infrantry, 5,000 Skirmishers, 5,000 Heavy infrantry. 500 grav tanks, 100 Walkers, 50 Nephilim.
Frigate: 200 Nexus Infrantry, 100 Skirmishers, 200 heavy Infrantry
Commonly sending the Skirmishers to thin the ranks then smashing into them with the main battle force.

Strengths: Discipline, Hard to Kill, Unwavering loyalty,
Weaknesses:Not very fast, Very hard to maneuver., Rather inflexible, Tend to over plan.
=========================================================
NS activity: Fairly active, I get on almost every day.
Technological Bases: Necrons,
Prior RP links: Ongoing:http://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=257818

The Military of the House of Augury

The House of Augury maintains a massive military of nearly 7 billion active and reserve personnel, with an emphasis on the navy. The House of Augury's military needs are mostly based around suppression of revolts, defending of trade routes and opening hostile civilizations to trade agreements.

Navy
The House of Augury's navy maintains an active standing force of 2 billion personnel, crewing a grand total of 4,000 super carriers, essentially massive super carriers that carry fleets of smaller, conventional warships and fighter wings. Each carrier possesses massive nuclear warheads, destruction beams and hail bombs for planetary bombardments, the warheads and beams for more coordinated, surgical strikes, whereas the hail bombs are designed to sow death and misery throughout an entire planet. Each carrier has the strength to subdue and conquer a single planet by itself, with entire divisions of marines on board.

Carriers
With crews of 500,000, the fleet carrier is the center of all House Military operations. Nigh on indestructible, fleet carriers are the size of small cities, with fully operational on board sections and quadrants. These carriers are self sufficient, with on board farming and sewage systems, and complex weapons systems to make children's mouths water. The pride of any Royal fleet, the Carrier is respected as an extremely powerful warship.

Fighters
Each operated by a single man, fighters are highly versatile, with interchangeable parts and additions, allowing fighter pilots to customize their ships. With over 500 options for weapons, different propulsion systems and other accessories, fighters can be adapted to any kind of battle conditions. This allows for the fighters to be used flexibly in all conditions. The fighters are quick, fast, and en masse, can deal serious firepower. Any carrier will hold about 3,000 fighters, though usually, fighters are deployed in small groups of 10 or so.

Drop-ships/ Fire support
The drop-ship is what allows Royal marines to land on the planet, as well as being outfitted with heavy weapons to provide close ranged fire support. With crews of about 100, the carrier can hold up to 1,000 additional soldiers, and fit several cannons to raze cities and destroy fortifications. With lighter shields, the drop-ships are still resilient, and are often used in pitched space battles to supplement the firepower of the carrier and its defensive turrets.

Army
The army is a militia reserve force, with soldiers serving 3 month terms, spending the rest of the year living normal lives with a small pension. Not truly expected to be able to hold a planet on its own, the army still helps maintain law and order and suppress revolutionary forces long enough for the arrival of Royal Marines. Very lightly armed, the army is for those less adventurous men who wish to serve their homes. Over 2 billion members are reported throughout the galaxy.

Royal Partisans
The standard backbone of the Army, the Partisans are your average citizens, with light training and firearms. With speeders, battle walkers and small artillery craft, the partisans are able to supply a light defense, and usually are the first lines of defense as the navy rushes to provide support.

The Eternal Knights
Trained in the arts of space time, the Eternal knights manipulate gravity and time in their fighting style, using melee weapons and blasters to massacre entire battalions of enemy infantry. The Eternal knights are trained from birth, and are feared as the elite of the galaxy, numbering a mere 50,000 total members.

Wow, a lot of ooc since Yesterday.

@Sarthal: So the Sarthantai'd retreated from Athla/Ethlan in order to save their species correct? They abandoned their creations, leaving them to their own devices, over time they evolved to the artificial lifeforms they are today. So how many years ago was the Swarm/Empire war? Since that would be the day the Artificial's nation started. The Artificials will most likely speak that imperial religious language.

@TNF: I wonder what would happen when a color of midnight used an Artificial as its host.

I'm thinking of making all the important Artificial characters have theological angel names. Like Ramiel, Jerahmeel, Zophiel, Penemue, Ambriel etc. And the ships will be named after other religious things, like the main flagship will be the Trials and Tribulations, or something like that.
A cactolith is a quasihorizontal chonolith composed of anastomosing ductoliths whose distal ends curl like a harpolith, thin like a sphenolith, or bulge discordantly like an akmolith or ethmolith.

Yes. The Empire/Swarm war (the Sundering) occurred approximately 3500 years ago, when the Empire attacked the Great Race (who created the Swarm as their last line of defense). For names and such, High Imperial is based primarily on Latin and Greek, with a little Turkish thrown in here or there for flavor.

I believe it belongs under Grid Coordinates, though I'm not certain we have enough members to warrant four full-size quadrants.

Perhaps we should all go into the Alpha one for now, leave the others for exploration / future applicants.
