World Cup 65: Rematch with Wight "Tough, fair, but disappointing"
Wight beats Sondstead 4–2 at sold-out Eästerkjirkjh stadium
4 July 2013
Windstrand — In front of a sellout crowd, the Sondstead national football team played their second match against Wight, the 18th-ranked in the world team whom they had unexpectedly tied in the first half of the World Cup qualifiers. No such unexpected success would ultimately be forthcoming, but the Sondsteadish team managed to put up a tough fight regardless.
Coach Tomas Rum chose a 4-3-3 starting formation, with Agócs, Eskola, Muharukua, and Karlman on defence, Markussunr, Henrikjrssünr, and E̊sbjussunr on the midfield, and Rummo, Karimi, and Ästerssünr as forwards, with Karl E̊nokssunr filling in for usual goaltender Edelwülfssünr. The game kicked off with Wight on the offensive, with "Big John" Corfe Sheviock quickly scoring a goal at 12 minutes. Before play restarted however, an altercation occurred between Sheviock and Tom Karlman, which broke into fisticuffs between the two players. While the referee judged that Sheviock had, it seemed, swung first, both players were embarrassed by being sent off, with Rum replacing Karlman with Durante Abandonato.
When play restarted, Sondstead was able to go on the offensive, with Gamal Karimi scoring a dramatic goal at 20 minutes. Wight quickly took the lead again, going back on the offensive, with Israel Falcon scoring a second goal for Wight at 33 minutes. While Sondstead was able to swing the game back in their favour and Katie Ästerssünr was able to line up a shot thanks to an opening in the Wightling defence, the game reached half time just before Ästerssünr kicked the ball, forfeiting the scoring opportunity.
Sondstead returned to the field with an unchanged lineup and immediately attempted to gain the upper hand again to equalize the score. However, Wight was able to easily retake the initiative, with Israel Falcon scoring his second goal of the game, and his team's third, at 54 minutes. The game continued it's rapid changes in direction, and soon Sondstead seemed to have the upper hand again, with Kalju Rummo scoring at 68 minutes in. Gamal Karimi almost managed to equalize the score with a dramatic shot at 75 minutes, but it was blocked — narrowly so — by Wight goalkeeper Antrim Quentine.
Again, the volatility of the match showed, with the lead swinging once again back to Wight. Despite the best efforts of the Sondsteadish defence, Lorccán Cotterill snagged a fourth goal for Wight at 84 minutes, by which point it was apparent that Sondstead had no time left to even equalize the score.
"We played a good game, I think.", said Kalju Rummo at a post-game interview. "But Wight is absolutely a great team. The match was tough, fair, but disappointing.".
Tomorrow evening Sondstead will play their away match with Karditan.
