Warzones - Dull to Dandy

Postby A mean old man » Fri Feb 19, 2010 7:19 pm

A mean old man wrote:...I would like to see an admin response to this post, as I believe it is perfectly reasonable, simple, and would solve a few problems.

A mean old man wrote:Well, we could always actually use warzones...

Maybe warzones should be made a little more public, in order to make people actually want to take them over. Perhaps, on The World's page, there could be a link to "Warzones" that displayed the WFE's and delegates of every in-game warzone region.

...and if you really need me to, I'll write up a big, long, descriptive, wordy post on why this would be a good thing, but I know you're smart enough to understand its benefits without my having to elaborate.

A mean old man wrote:
Sedgistan wrote:Warzones? Defenders don't care about them, as there's no natives to protect. Invaders don't care, as there's no natives to annoy/they won't get a defender response.

Exactly why making them more public via a link to a list of the warzones and their WFE's/delegates would be a benefit - raiders and even non-raiders would take an interest in claiming them as their own for advertisement space. This would draw these raiders away from fucking around with regions with natives, and create a fun activity for regions who aren't necessarily raiders but would like something to do.

Cut down on region griefing, increase activity, and don't change game mechanics. What is there to lose?

A little elaboration on the specifics (if suggestion is adopted by the Admin, this might be a helpful idea for the visual setup for this feature. Any modifications that the Admin would like to make to the setup are also good - it's your game, after all). I don't know the first thing about code, but I think you might be able to figure out a way to set up what I'm describing. After all, it's only a page, not anything related to the mechanics of the game.

Suggestion:

On The World's page, below the horizontal line below Today's Featured Region's box, would be a link: "Warzones"

Below this link would be another horizontal line, simply for aesthetics' sake.

This link would lead to a page which would display every warzone in alphabetical order, giving the warzone's name, current delegate, Longest-serving delegate, and world factbook entry, maybe all in a nice little pretty box for each warzone (a bit like the featured region box, maybe?).

What if we got some people together to build a warzone into a serious region, and in a sense, give it natives? Would people be more interested in raiding it then? If someone else wants to do it too I'd go along with it, sounds like a fun and interesting challenge.

I remember Tommasso Empire trying that out once, but it didn't work out well. I also seem to remember Yggdrasil somehow getting involved. If the defender groups could keep their people out of warzones, they might find that will actually help their cause.

You realize the "war" between LOP and Nisyros was set up by me to get revenge on Jam for talking trash about my region right?. It might have worked, but my actions pretty much messed all that up.

I have no idea who that is or who he was before.

I doubt anyone would be interested in holding down a warzone. You could try it, however there's no real reward in doing so. However, my idea of a link to the warzone WFE's and delegates on The World's page would certainly add some incentive (Ad space! Your region here!).

Reminds me of Nai's Adzone idea from a while back in the Jolt megathread, except with a spotlight on the World page, which I supported for Nai's idea, as opposed to unsolicited telegrams for the Adzone delegates, which she supported. I cannot remember why, I'll have to check the list.

He's talking about making a region designed just to be raided and defended.

Warzones are special, permanently founderless regions where passwords are impossible, banlists do not last long, and ejections/bans cost no influence:

Warzone Sandbox
Warzone Airspace
Warzone Australia
Warzone Asia
Warzone Africa

Unfortunately, the only reason to go to them is to tussle with other nations who are trying to take them. They make for good training exercises for invaders and defenders, but no one tries to hold onto them in the long run.
I wish I remember who wrote:Games like Nationstates are like a big cardboard box, and there are two kinds of people in the world. The kind who look at the empty void inside the box and ask "Where the hell is it?" and the kind who jump into the box with their friends and make it into a fort, or a spaceship.

I'll make this simple, You know what raiding is?
Correct me if I'm wrong but Mean old man is talking about making a region. This region is specificly made to be raided by other regions. while this is going on the nations in the region, the "Home nations, try to kick the raiders out. This is the only reason the region exists in the first place.

However, if there was serious potential for a powerful advertisement for your region/organization by holding a warzone, that may change.

Would it work? would people honestly look at that page to find new regions?

You'd be surprised by how many people have migrated to Corporate on the two days it's been featured on The World's page.

While this wouldn't be quite as in-your-face as the featured region feature, I imagine it'd work in a similar, though probably slightly lesser, way.

EDIT: Fixing typo. I'm having a particularly bad proofreading week.

You'd have to do something to make warzones valuable, provide some reason for wanting to hold them. Right now they're virtually worthless and I'm not sure advertising is going to be enough of an incentive for people to expend resources (WA nations) trying to take and hold them.

How about this: give warzone delegates special powers within the WA. If a warzone delegate had the ability to "veto" an SC resolution before it goes to vote that might be incentive to want to hold a warzone. There are currently six warzones, add another so there could be a majority and give the warzone delegates "disapprovals". Four "disapprovals" against an SC proposal would prevent it from going to vote, no matter the number of normal approvals.

Admit it, you just want less SC proposals. :p

I can see it now, AO ..the Warzone Empire!

For an incentive what about a semi-feeder incentive? A delegate of a Warzone can declare any region as a feeder (even a existing feeder), a small proportion of players would then arrive at that designated region when founded... the longer they stayed as delegate, the higher the proportion of players that would be founded in the region (still no where near as many as feeders). If the delegate was replaced, the region would cease to be a semi-feeder.
