Let's Take A Look at...Group III

Postby Super-Llamaland » Wed Feb 20, 2013 5:33 pm

Group 3
Skeckoa (UR)
Yesopalitha (3)
Cyborg Holland (22)
Quebecois Acadiana (UR)
Super-Llamaland (25)
Bloodbath Generation (99)

Group Three looked easy at first glance until you noticed that [nation=Yesopalitha], a dangerous championship contender, was on the team. However, with a slew of easy games versus unranked opponents (with the exception of Yesopalitha and 22nd-rank Cyborg Holland), the Llamas have a decent chance.

The key games are against Cyborg Holland, of course. 51% of Llamanean fans say they think the Llamas will reach the playoffs, but just 12% think they will make the second round of the playoffs.

ViZion Returns to the World Baseball Classic

Gamers Celebrate WBC 19 Round One Victory

By: Tom Hesh

Vitalita, ViZion - What a ride that was, back in World Baseball Classic 19. This little, unknown team named the Gamers from a nation not known as a premier sporting nation. Indeed, ViZion had never previous been involved in any sort of international sports events, and had never before broadcasting its games, results, or other information globally. If you happened to stumble upon a ViZionarian sports news or blog website as a foreigner, that very well may have been the only way you'd even know we play sports. After all, ViZion is much more well known as one of the largest economic powers the world over. Its companies is what grabs global attention, not its sports teams.

But that spunky little team from ViZion known as the Gamers, they were something else. They started the tournament oh-fer after two games, much to the shagrin of the sports writers globally and nationally who began saying, "See! We knew these guys couldn't compete. What makes them think they can complete globally against the worlds best, the most seasoned teams and players the world has ever known?" Yet, the team did not back down. They stepped up.

They knocked out fifth-ranked Qazox, one of the most talented teams in baseball, in game three to gain their first win. And from there? The wins kept coming - three sets of three game winning streaks would put them into the playoffs. They then knocked out Western Cuba in round one of the playoffs, first ranked this year as WBC 24 Champions and group rival this time around.

And that might just be the pre-tournament story to talk about in ViZion. Western Cuba. After all, that is the team that has been so dominate lately. But that is also the team the Gamers so gleefully defeated to knock out in the first round of WBC 19's playoffs. And while the whole team is not back this time around, there are several key players - including Hollier - who are returning to this years team. As ViZionarian fans surely remember, Hollier is the teams second basemen who made a serious case for WBC19 MVP, and was the clear cut team MVP due to his otherworldly .800 batting average. Now in the thick of his prime, and posting multiple fantastic seasons in ViZion, he looks to help put this team on the map for good - as champions of World Baseball Classic 25.

Last time around, pitching was the Gamers Achilles heal. While it had plenty of potential, it proved very inconsistent and was ultimately what crushed the teams hopes of becoming champions of World Baseball Classic 19. This time around, while hitting is still expecting to be a strength, the pitching is said to be much improved. While the full roster has yet to be announced, we can take heart in knowing this team will be well-built and much more seasoned with some returning players.

Group Ten will not be easy. Top ranked Western Cuba is the clear front runner, but one cannot dismiss the other rivals. Maklohi Vai is a quality team, and there is only one other unranked team beyond ViZion. And unranked does not mean uncompetitive, as the previous Gamers proved. This should be a great competition, and a thrilling ride. Now, lets go Gamers!

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Eileen Janvier. (Logrove Dolphins) Takes after her predecessor, Toussaint Bonner, in that she is slow to hook players, and also tends not to platoon--she will, however, be much more favorable to a player riding a hot streak.

Zebra policy abandons the traditional idea of a bullpen. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). They'll start the group stage games in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).

Pitchers:

This is a wondrous day that the Lord hath made. He hath smiled upon us as we prepare to join in this worldwide sport of baseball. Even St. Luc has shown his hand in assuring that we have found a new battlefield through which we can deliver the Word of God to the heathens. A battlefield where we must endure hardship to truly show our Faith and its justification. Rest assured my Brothers and friends of the Priory, we shall endure those hardships.

The group of teams that we have been placed with to play includes the World’s very best in the form of Western Cuba. We will need to practice humility as we face them on the field, for it is unlikely that we shall see any positive result. The saving grace of this is that we will have a chance to learn from the best. That is what we must do. Learn from them so that we can defeat them further down the road we will travel.

Maklohi Vai we must also face. A fast rising team that we must strive to emulate. These heathen people of Polynesian heritage will prove to be quite a challenge and another lesson where humility is concerned. Again we must learn from those we wish to conquer at a later time.

As for the rest, we must simply play this game at our best and place our fate in the hands of God. If he so wishes, we shall perform well. Yet he may also decide that we need other lessons as well. Lessons such as patience as well as a much needed dose of batting practice.

Postby Kinzar » Fri Feb 22, 2013 7:30 pm

What Can We Expect?

Politicians don’t always live up to their campaign promises, but in the case of Kevin Spencer, such promise is now a reality. To win his election, the youthful candidate promised to bring Kinzar to the international scale instead of being an isolated country in its own region. Sports would just play a small role in this, as the ultimate goal is to develop economic relationships with a wider variety of nations, but Spencer knew in order to realize this, Kinzar had to be a nation in which others felt their would be a benefit to them to do business with us. That wouldn’t happen if no one knew who we were, and now that can begin to change.

Sports should play a major role in this, and it will. Kinzites love sports, whether it be baseball, football, hockey, or horse racing; if there is a competitive spirit to it, our people love it. So sports had to be part of the equation of Spencer’s agenda. So far the nation has been signed up for a few tournaments, and the World Baseball Classic will be the first to actually begin. It is a special Classic for Kinzites, but it also is for the entire world, as the competition embarks on its monumental 25th edition.

What can we expect in the World Baseball Classic? Get ready for baseball like you have never experienced before. While some Kinzites may have watched previous editions, the level of baseball in which we will see is going to be amazing. It may be hard for some fans to accept that it will take a little while for our Wildcats to emerge as one of the best baseball playing nations in the world, even if they would be so fortunate to get to that point. With a 10-game qualifying campaign, are Kinzites ready to accept a 4-6 record? 3-7? Anything worse would automatically be considered a failure, certainly. Could they go 5-5? Or what about 7-3 and making the playoffs? History isn’t kind to first time nations, and it is unlikely that any first time nation has ever won this tournament other then Az-cz, who took the first three championships. Looking at the history of the Classic, one first sees a bunch of nations that are no longer active. After that, it appears as though different nations have had differing periods of dominance, and right now we are in the Western Cuba era. What we also find to be a very astounding number is that only eleven nations have experienced a WBC Championship. This recordbook also points out some incredible facts of what has happened in this tournament. It really does make you want to go out and buy a DVD set of some of these old Classics. In fact, this reporter just purchased a set from World Baseball Classic 17 to start off with.

That history shows that some nations have been successful in their first go around, but those nations seemed to have played in tournaments with not as many entrants. Having said this, it appears as though the bar is going to be set at .500. No one wants to go 5-5, but it will be a positive step assuming we can build off of this and begin our own history.

Kinzar is in Group 8, and will have two meetings with 2nd ranked Milchama, as well as two with 13th ranked Qazox. History shows that these are two of the best nations, long term. Off the bat, it may seem as though we are doomed to strike out in these games, but the forever optimistic manager David Rogers sees it as an opportunity, and not a challenge. In a press conference, Rogers brought up a point that if Kinzar would be able to qualify out of this group, the fact that they did so with these two behemoths in it would capture the attention of the entire baseball playing world and give us quick recognition. Even if they didn’t qualify, if they could manage a 2-2 record in these four games, it would be a great foundation for the team to build on in the Classics that will follow this one. If they lose all four of the games, then it will just be seen as the expected result. Because of this Rogers believers that all the pressure in those four games will be on Milchama and Qazox, and none on Kinzar, because they are expected to win the games and anything less would be seen as a major upset, regardless of how the Wildcats perform in the other games. The other nations in the group will also be formidable foes, but as a newcomer to this tournament, the appeal of playing Pretty Awesome Persons, even in all their awesome glory, is not the same thing.

It is those Pretty Awesome People in what we assume will be an equally awesome stadium that will be the first opposition for the Wildcats. Winning on the road will present a challenge, but the Awesomeites are also an unranked team, so this will serve as a good way for both of us to get started in the tournament. We don’t know the Awesome Story of those people yet, and their roster has yet to published for public review, but it may just be a tale similar to ours, of a nation looking to experience amazing successes in the World Baseball Classic.

Kinzar will not win World Baseball Classic 25. But it will forever be remembered as our first, and while there will more chances to win in the future, there is never a second chance to have a first experience. For Kinzites, just being here is Pretty Awesome, indeed.

In what can only be serendipity, 2 of 3 teams that have been around since the 1st WBC will clash, as Qazox and Michama were drawn jnto the same group. Qazox will also face Mapletish, Kinzar, Quebec and Pretty Awesome Persons.

While winning the title would be a perfect way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Qazox' hosting of the inaugural WBC, odds are this team is just barely good enough to make the playoffs and will be lucky to get 7 wins.

As part of the Golden Anniversary, Qazox, after the completion of the 25th WBC, will release it's list of the 25 best WBC champions. And there is a surprise team on top of that list, but you all will have to wait.

Roster

Postby Super-Llamaland » Fri Feb 22, 2013 8:55 pm

Starting Lineup (BOLD is Lefty, ITALICS is SWITCHHITTER)

1. SS Darren Bradley- Age 29, #15 (Can also play: None): Best contact hitter in the Llamaland Baseball League. Good speed/defense and veteran presence. Good power for his relatively small size.

2. 2B Max Danks- Age 24, #2 (3B, SS) A scrappy player who can steal often and plays amazing defense. Good hitter, but could improve.

3. 3B Alex Cameron- Age 29, #7 (None) A former benchwarmer, Cameron underwent a Jose Bautista- like transformation. Now is a fantastic 30-30 type hitter with good contact. Defense needs work.

4. 1B Danny Mills- Age 30, #13 (None) Mills, a power hitter, loves pulling it to right field. Average contact hitter but when he hits it, he hits it FAR. Also a sterling defender at first.

5. RF Chris Harder- Age 28, #30 (LF) Chris Harder may be just a slightly-above-average hitter, but his throwing arm is one of the best his team has ever seen. Below average speed.

6. CF Brett Rochester- Age 23, #0 (OF) Rochester is the kind of player who bunts himself onto first, steals second and third, and then tags up for home on a pop fly just out of the infield to the opposing shortstop. Without bunt singles, he's hitting .279, but with them, he's .305. He can also slap it over defenders when they pull in. Without these kind of hits, he's hitting .265. Average everything else.

7. LF Jake Addams- Age 25, #1 (OF) Almost as fast as Rochester.

8. C Tyler Thomas- Age 37, #3 (1B) A veteran who is a great plate handler. (Throws righty)

9. DH (If needed) Keith Dawson- Age 22, #24(C/1B) Young and raw but with fantastic power.

BENCH

Jim Atkins, OF, #18, 33: A veteran who beats lefties to death: .381 against them compared to .235 versus righties. A good option for pinch-hitting, with a great arm in right, left or center.

Drew Stephenson, IF, #11, 28: He can play third, short, second, and left. Good contact, speed, and defense, everything else is below-average.

Duncan Roberts, IF, #18, 25: One of just two lefties on the squad, Roberts is a world-class defender. That's about it besides above-average speed and good contact hitting.

Hitting Coach- Steve Mays, 56
1B Coach- Nick Horry, 44
3B Coach- Stan Evans, 65

PITCHING

Starters

R Evan Masorka- 27, #43- Low-to-mid nineties fastball, nasty high-80s sinker and splitter, looping low-70s curveball. He's so good with his other pitches and command that he doesn't even need a changeup. His career changed after the development of the final pitch.

L Ryan Lucas- 30, #44- He's made a career of his amazing curveball. A quote from catcher Chris Romatini: "It completely skips the strike zone. It starts on one edge and ends on another." He also has a nice fastball in the low nineties.

L Leo Davis- #51, 26- He's been almost always injured, but has a golden arm. He throws triple-digit fastballs and mid-nineties Mariano Rivera cutters. Who needs offspeed?

R Allan Roswell- #36, 38- He has seven different pitches- fastball, 2-seamer, sinker, slider, cutter, changeup, and eephus. The latter is rarely used but generates punchouts.

R Chris Lee- #31, 27- A knuckleballer who never throws anything else. The result? A 3.10 ERA in 7 years.

RELIEF

R Rick Jackson, #50, 31- A Long Reliever who normally starts, Jackson has a high-80s 2-seamer as his out pitch and usually throws that, a low-70s curve, and a knuckle curve in the high 60s. Nobody knows why he bothered learning two curveballs.

L Nick Carter, Lefty Specialist- 24, #73- Lefties can't hit his low-80s sinker. Most people can hit his mid-80s fastball (besides lefties who are thinking sinker)

L Aaron Raymond/R Alex Carson- Seventh Inning- Raymond- #53, 23: Aaron Raymond features a low-90s 2-seamer and great control. Has gone through four breaking balls looking for the right one and can throw all four to keep you off balance- curveball, slider, cutter, and splitter. Carson- 23, #53: Alex Carson has the same 2-seamer and same control. However, he has a good mid-80s slider and that's it.

L Darren Mueller/L Evan Daye/R Robby Irving- Setup: Mueller- #-3, 24: A slightly cuckoo pitcher (See: Jersey Number) who is one of two pitchers with an eephus on the team. mid-80s 2-seamer, low-60s eephus. Daye- #55, 27: A lefty killer, Daye has an amazing low-90s cutter. That's it. He has no injury troubles or stamina issues, but only one pitch means being whacked in the fourth inning.
Irving: 28/#82- Robby Irving used to be a starter with a low-90s fastball, mid-80s sinker, low-80s slider, and low-70s curveball. Then he got injured and moved to the bullpen.

Nick Bowden- Closer: High 90s-fastball, low 90s- splitter. #43

PITCHING COACH- Chris Evans, 41
BULLPEN COACH- Vinny Marrero, 50
BULLPEN CATCHERS- Ray Nelson, 38, and Jack Aaron, 45.
MANAGER- Thomas Yaft, 41

After some outcry from the most fundamentalist religious leaders, TSE got a baseball team together and entered the WBC in the Silver edition. Expectations were high going into the group draw, many believed a playoff berth could be in reach for the fledgling team. However, the group draw looked grim for TSE. The scedule looks like this:

vs. Vaugania (UR)
vs. Thrilledge (10)
vs. Zwanzug (15)
vs. Backyard Sports (49)
vs. Lymantatia (29)

The analysts checked the other teams, and they simply looked at the numbers and names with dismay. 2 teams in the top 15, a puppet designed for sports, and the only unranked team had a roster twice the size of TSE. The uphill battle in the first WBC for TSE begins Sunday, in what many believe to be the closest match in the first Round Robin. For those in the TSE that would like to watch it at home, it will be on a tape delay, as the game is on the Sabbath.

God Bless,
Greg Sova
TSE Executive Pastor, and Head Coach.

Las Palabras de Libertad
WBC XXV Preview

Javier Andino

The World Baseball Classic comes around this more, but with quite a different shift of taste for the average Cuban fan. The bloodthirsty, power hungry, coward known as Vladimir Makarov II has come back to power in Western Cuba. The reaction of every Cuban could be compared to the baseball team and soccer team being banned from international play for infinity.

Why am I speaking out against the fool known as Makarov? Simple, because I can. Right now I'm safe away from the clutches of that man typing on a computer in a country I can not reveal to you. I am a refugee, but I am not a coward like that man. For I bring freedom and the truth to the people of Western Cuba. The state media will not express their true feelings about every match which will happen this classic, when Western Cuba losses the controlled media will call out fraud, even when a team has beat our boys far and square.

You simply can not trust the media of our country. For it has fallen to the darkness and it will be awhile before it gets back out to the light, and then once it comes back out, it might adjust to the growing light.

For the time being however, you can still find some freedom in my writings. I hope that Cubans manage to sneak my work into Havana and all the other areas of Western Cuba. Whether they somehow sneak a peek on the internet, or hear word from someone else, I wish that they learn something from this. First off, your not alone and second off, please enjoy the writing that I bring to you. As you can not experience it back home.

Now let us get down to business. Western Cuba is beginning to establish itself as a superpower among the baseball world, appearing in the four of the last five finals. Two of which they have won under Ivan Kasper and a great surrounding cast.

With Kasper retired however, a huge question looms against us. Will this rather inexperienced team be able to be at the top among the rest of the world? Only three players on the roster are above the age of 25, and that is the only four players returning from the two championship teams.

Alejandro Torres, Erik Bures, Alfonso Chincilla and Arman Pletenetsky are the only actually known players on this team, the rest are apparently young prospects who have been training in academies for the classic. Well subtract that, most of them. One man, and not a surprise this man is Cubano has made the team that has not trained with any of the academies, and in a major twist, he's actually unattached.

This man sort of reminds me of the baseball version of Alberto Perez, I hope this man does not have the same temper problems that Perez experienced as a youngster. However though, this man has quite the cannon for an arm. And that's probably why the national team couldn't refuse to put him down, regardless of his skin color and ethnicity. Which is another disgusting thing I've thought on the new regime. How could they judge people based on their appearance. Out of the new youngsters, Enrique Avios is the only Cuban, the rest Russano.

I'm not putting anything against the rest of the national team, for its the work of the government. But in a way I find it outrageous that Avios and the older guys are the only Cubanos on the team. Cubanos hold around a 70-75% majority in Western Cuba but they find themselves as a very small minority for the baseball squad?

I could understand that if Russanos were only superior in baseball, but that's not the case. Look at the last two championships we won, that was based on a roster filled with a Cubano majority.

However since I can not change anything about this, I shall continue on with another topic. Even through my dislike of the government, I have to say I'm excited about this national team. While mostly young, the pitching rotation will be greatly mentored by Fredek Fenyak. Perhaps the greatest pitcher in Western Cuban history and a future hall of famer. The pitching rotation has a great mentor.

And the batters have a solid mentor in Gustav Nunez, a former member of the national team as well. The man had a powerful swing, and I wouldn't be surprised if this team was high hitting.

The question that remains however, is how this team will do well on the defensive side of the ball. There is no question though, that this team will be well conditioned as they face off against ViZion, a team Western Cuba should be familiar with.

Demyan Orlov, the strength and conditioning coach is famous for his days as a famous sprinter as a youngster and being a weightlifter as well. Orlov has brought great endurance, and speed to this team. It will be exciting to see them play there first matchday tomorrow.

If this team continues to play like the team before them, and is truly the number one team in the world, they will have no problem in the current group they are playing in. No team exactly offers a great opposition to play against. No Milchama's, Saugeais's, Darmen's, or Qazox's are in the group, so it shouldn't be much of a trouble for the hammers. (As they are so called now).

I can actually see a routing in this group, perhaps going undefeated. We've done it before, so why not do it again?
Now known as the Technological State of Adros, the successor state of Western Cuba

Executive Pastor Greg Sova was sitting at his desk in the Capitol Building in The Sova Empire (referred from now on as TSE) capitol city of New Bethlehem. Many issues were scattered across his desk, including drug smuggling tourists, military spending, graffiti control, and others. Exhausted, Greg shoved them all off his desk. “Quite frankly”, he thought, “I might not be cut out for this job”. He folded his hands and prayed out loud that something would come along before lunch that would be of tolerable interest. Like an omen, his twin brother Tom Sova knocked timidly on the door.
“Come in!” exclaimed Greg. Tom complied, and entered with a stack of papers. Greg groaned, clearly exasperated with the paperwork that came with the job of leading a theocracy such as TSE. “Before you drop those on my desk, can you tell me what they are about?” said Greg, clearly running out of patience. “Sir, these are the papers you requested about the World Baseball Classic.” Tom explained. Tom was named the assistant manager of the TSE World Baseball Classic Baseball team the day after Greg was named head coach. Tom had been assigned with recruiting, and got to know the players before Greg could.
“Tom, could you tell me the player’s names so when I coach them for the first time, I can call them exactly by name!” Greg eagerly requested
“Funny you should ask, Greg, I’ve got the roster right here.” After searching for a couple of seconds, Tom pulled it out of the pile.
“Now, on the bags we have Huu’s on first, Watt’s on second, and Ida Kno’s on third”
“That’s what I wanna know!”
“I said Huu’s on first, Watt’s on second, and Ida Kno’s on third”
“You know the guy’s names or not?”
“Yes I do!”
“Then who’s on first?”
“Yep”
“The first baseman’s name is…?”
“Huu”
“The guy on first”
“Huu”
“The person on first base”
“Huu is on first!”
“I’m asking YOU who’s on first!”
“That’s the man’s name!”
“That’s who’s name?”
“yes”
Greg paused to think about it. Greg graduated high school with Magna Cum Laude honors, and he was failing to see why he couldn’t understand his twin.
“Alright, we’ll get back to first later. Now, let’s talk about the 2nd baseman. Who’s on second?”
“No, Huu’s on first!”
“I’m not asking you what’s on first!”
“No, Watt’s on 2nd!”
“I dunno”
“That’s the 3rd baseman, sir”
Greg gave Tom an odd look. “How did I get on 3rd?”
“You happened to mention his name.”
“If I told you the 3rd baseman’s name, who did I say was playing third?”
“No, Huu’s on first!”
“What’s on first?”
“Watt’s on second!”
“I dunno”
“He’s on 3rd.”
“There I go, back on 3rd again.”
Greg was starting to feel overwhelmed at this point and realized he was standing on tiptoes in the heated discussion. Greg sat back down and calmly asked: “You got an outfield?”
“Wouldn’t it be a fine team without an outfield?” Tom replied sarcastically. Tom was getting exasperated that his twin wasn’t comprehending the lineup.
“The leftfielder’s name”
“Y”
“Because”
“Oh, that’s centerfield”
A long and awkward pause happened as Greg buried his shaved head in his hands. “You got a pitcher?”
“Sure do.”
“Who’s pitching?”
“No, Huu’s on first!”
“What’s on first?”
“Watt’s on second!”
“I dunno”
Both of them simultaneously said “Third base”
“The pitcher’s name is…” Greg was about to get up and leave, but he really felt that he needed to know the pitcher.
“Tammarah”
“What time?”
“What time are you going to tell me who’s pitching?”
“Now listen. Huu is not pitching. Huu is on-“
“I’LL BREAK YOUR ARM IF YOU SAY WHO’S ON FIRST”
“Take it easy Greg.”
“Just tell me today the pitcher’s name.”
“No, Taday is the catcher.”
“You know what?! I DON’T GIVE A DARN!”
“What’s that?”
“I SAID I DON’T GIVE A DARN!”
“Oh yeah, he’s our shortstop!”

Despite the lack of weather for it or success Birolika have decided once again to enter a baseball side in the classic. This doesn't make sense mostly because the demand for baseball is down with the rise of cricket as the sport of summer, however baseball still holds a place in the hearts of those from the south of the country. Our best player at the minute is probably either Freddie Bronx who hit an average of .322 last year, youngster Nevan Colca with a .298 average for his debut season and pitcher Oswald Yacks with a 3.24 ERA last year. The result of this is a team that has only got talent by Birolik standards, so none at all. Once against the stadium is the Pods Ground at Choggswallington Island where we can expect many angry suburban kids to get drunk and boozishly cheer on which ever team is winning.

AARDENLAND TO PLAY IN WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

For silver anniversary of competition, Aardenland's best to take the field at home for first game

KONINGSTAD: At Peace Stadium, the stars of the Aardenland Professional Baseball League are preparing for their first game in the 25th World Baseball Classic. Members of all sixteen teams of the APBL are on the National Team, which has been preparing for this most prestigious of international Baseball competitions. The most recent competition was won by the nation of Western Cuba, a nation reknowned for its prowess in multiple international sports competitions; they are the number one ranked nation in baseball. Team Captain Desmond de Waal, the star player for the Koningstad Kings, had a realistic, but positive outlook on the competition. (Translated from Dutch) "I don't see us winning the competition this year. I definitely think we can compete, though. There are no impossibilities when it comes to baseball." Other team members had higher hopes, including de Waal's teammate, Ricky Bruijn. "We have the best players, that is simple. The foreign teams do not have de Waal, they do not have [Silas] van Hoven, and there is no chance they have anyone like that Wouda. We win, very easily." Silver Wouda, the rising star of the Sandoval Bulls, is the starting right fielder for the national team. "He is one of our main players, that the others are gravitating towards," says assistant coach Henry Brock. "Considering how diverse this team is, I am surprised at how unified it is." Wouda, as a Dutch Aardenlandish Male, is among the majority demographic of the national team. The team also includes eight women, two of which will be in the starting lineup on Sunday. "I had to go through some derision when I played against all-male teams in high school, when I was the only girl on the school team," says starting catcher Odessa Kroon, of the Bellemere Suns. "Women players still have difficulty playing this male-centric sport, but with acceptance across our country, we are prepared to do anything." In addition to diversity of sex, the team also has many different ethnicities. In addition to Dutch and American Aardenlandish players, the national team has the Swedish Sally Karlsson, the Hispanic Julio Carmena, and Vujadin Lacković, a player born from Slovenian immigrants in Liefdestad. But among the many minority team members, the one who attracts the most attention is the Javanese Batari Sastrowardoyo, the team's manager. Sastrowardoyo had managed the Ellsstricht Gladiators for just three years, turning the team from laughingstock to contender, when she had been selected to lead the national team. "Managing the Gladiators was like running a family to me," says Batari. "Now my family is bigger, louder, and filled with superhuman drive like I have never seen. We are going to have many interesting games these coming weeks." Home games at Peace Stadium have already sold out, with many booking themselves to buy prospective playoff tickets. Big names who are known to be attending the first game include HH Prince Peter, His Majesty's younger brother and AINPO president; HH Princess Caroline, His Majesty's third daughter, avid baseball fan and amateur player; William Irish, commissioner and president of the APBL; and Dr. Rumiko Suzuki, celebrated scholar, activist, and recently appointed Minister of Culture and Arts. Whether the Prime Minister or the King himself will attend the event is unknown at the time. Silas van Hoven will take the mound on Sunday, when the 20-man squad that comprises the Serbian Imperial Team comes to call. How the National Team will answer the call is yet to be seen, but across the nation, people are anticipating many future victories.

World Baseball Classic XXV Preview

(Saintland Press) For the first time ever, the Kingdom of Saintland will be participating in the World Baseball Classic. On the heels of our recent victory in Arena Bowl IV and our Divinely-inspired performance at the VIII Winter Olympics, King Paulus XV authorized an entry into the World Baseball Classic. The King selected Petrus Arminus, catcher and captain for defending champions St. Petrus, to select an all-star team of the best ballplayers from the Kingdom. "I set out to choose players that have a reputation for being among the best in the Kingdom. It was important to consider personalities, so I chose players that were exceptional on the field and would be likely to get along off the field. My entire team recognize that we are playing to show a corrupt world the superiority of our way of life and that our Church is the True Church. As Sanctii athletes have proven repeatedly in recent months, we are a nation favored by God and, if it is His Will, we will win this tournament." - Petrus Arminus

The ace of the National Team's staff is Ioannes Bebius, the reigning King Paulus XIV Award winner. The award is named for the great-great-great-grandfather of King Paulus XV. King Paulus XIV, as every Sanctii schoolchild knows, was the most dominant pitcher in the history of Saintland and later a King. Bebius won 40 games last season as the ace for St. Petrus. Andreas Fundanus, Paulus Famulus and Marcus Laelius round up a star-studded rotation.

In the bullpen, Josephus Oppius was selected to be the relief ace. He has dominated since the turn of the century and was virtually unhittable in his prime. Today, he's slightly older and his fastball isn't as fast as it used to be, but the 7 footer still regularly hits the high 90s on the radar. He's slightly less wild than he used to be, but the Wild One still walks his fair share of batters. Petrus Nonius will be the setup man. Lucas Rufus is more of a finesse pitcher these days, but he remains a solid middle relief pitcher. He has phenomenal control over his pitches. Thomas Ulpius is also known for being a finesse pitcher, but he is the perfect emergency reliever.

Petrus Tragus will be the leadoff man. Last season, Tragus was the MVP after he stole 128 bases, becoming the first basestealer to make a run at the single season record in nearly 4 decades. Tragus is extremely quick, makes great contact and is known for his patience at the plate. He's also one of the greatest defensive center fielders the Kingdom has ever produced. Ioannes Sentius bats 2nd. He is a longtime star for St. Paulus known for making spectacular defensive plays at shortstop and being a leader. Some people question whether he is actually good defensively or whether he just makes highlight-reel plays. Paulus Sittius is one of the best contact hitters ever in the Kingdom, but he's not what he used to be. He gained weight a few years and tipped the scales at 260 pounds last season, costing him his speed and his defensive ability. Sittius has spent the last few months trying to get into shape, but it is unknown if he will ever again be the player he once was. Lucius Maccius cleans up. He is a great power hitter who is known for his patience at the plate, but he is merely an average contact hitter and an average defensive 1st baseman. "Iron" Lucas Maianius is known for playing in every game for his team over the past 10 seasons. Nobody has ever played in more consecutive games. Maianius is a decent power hitter that makes good contact. He is above-average defensively. Matthaeus Bebius, the younger brother of Ioannes, is a 5-tool player who was in the midst of a breakout season before he got hurt last June. He is a question mark going into this tournament. Petrus Arminus is a solid hitting catcher with patience at the plate. He does have a tendency to strike out fairly often. Defensively, Arminus is above-average, but not elite. Marcus Tragus, the younger brother of Petrus, is an average hitter and an exceptional defensive player. Marcus, like his brother, has outstanding quickness. The 21-year-old is believed to have the potential to develop into a good hitter some day.

On the bench, Thomas Ennius is the backup catcher. He is a slightly better than average hitter, but is mostly known for his exceptional defensive play. Lucas Cnisius has all the tools, but he is prone to lapses in judgment on defense. Matthaeus Novius is a slugger who is known for swinging for the fences every chance he gets. Novius strikes out constantly, but when he gets ahold of the ball, he hits it far. Paulus Juventius is an athletic center fielder who steals bases and plays good defense. Petrus Iulus is a center fielder who has all the tools, but so far the 22-year-old hasn't put it together. He is prone to swinging at bad pitches and he is prone to making mistakes defensively.

The SP was allowed to observe an intrasquad scrimmage at Royal Park, which also featured 3 of Arminus's teammates from St. Petrus who were not chosen for the National Team. Each of the starting pitchers got to throw 3 innings. Rufus and Ulpius dueled for the 7th and 8th innings. In the 9th, Oppius and Nonius got to pitch for their teams. The scrimmage ended in a 2-2 draw after 9 innings. Maccius and Novius provided the scoring for the game as both of them hit 2 run homers for their respective teams. Neither side made many mistakes and the National Team appeared to be ready for foreign competition.

The World Baseball Classic features 10 groups of 6. The Sanctii were drawn into Group 1. Also included in the group were 11th ranked Byfugland, 25th ranked Free South Califas, 27th ranked Ko-oren, 83rd ranked Raxillion and Central North America, a nation that is also debuting at this World Baseball Classic. The top 2 teams in each Group advance to the playoff stage. The top finisher in the group plus the top 2 seeded 2nd place teams advance automatically to the Round of 16. The other 8 teams have to participate in a Play-In Game, which is single-elimination. The Playoffs are best of 3, except for the Championship Series, which is best of 5.

On the first day of Group Stage, the Kingdom will visit Central North America in a battle of the first-time participants in the group. Elsewhere, Raxillion hosts Byfugland and Ko-oren hosts Free South Califras. The entire tournament will be televised on the Royal Networks. Every game featuring the Sanctii will be televised live on Royal One. The world will be watching as our Kingdom attempts to make our presence felt on the world stage.
