Mi'ato, Kinitaria

Twenty-one days - three and a half weeks, because the Kinitar calendar has six-day weeks - had passed since young Lupan Mihalcič had been given a shocking introduction to life at Mi'ato City, thanks to a poisonous atmosphere in the cup quarter-final defeat to Litora United. He hadn't actually played in that particular game, having been an unused substitute, but he'd certainly got a taste of how quick a crowd could turn. Since then, life was looking slightly better in the red-and-white half of the capital. This was back in the days before there was an officially sanctioned national league, which is actually a fairly recent innovation in Kinitaria. Regional leagues and competitions were the norm, with the Kinitar Cup being seen as the only necessary nationwide tournament. City had been unceremoniously dumped out of that at the start of the month, though.

After the cup debacle, fortunes improved somewhat. A 2-0 win away to Avnani Athetic was next on the agenda, with Lupan again being an unused sub, followed by a midweek clash with Atletika Vanuku which ended goalless. A routine win in Kasmenai, which the young forward didn't make the squad for, was then followed by a blank weekend while the semi-finals of the Cup went on. But minds in the capital were turned only to one thing - the derby. The derby, the biggest game in Kinitar football (depending on who you asked), the cross-capital derby between Mi'ato City and their bitter rivals, Mi'ato. It was due to take place in midweek, the authorities obviously not having any concerns with six thousand fiercely passionate away supporters having time to get vast quantities of cheap alcohol down their necks before making the trip across the city. It's not as though they didn't have fair warning - this was a fixture which often brought out the worst of both club's support. The Kinitar Football Federation always seemed strangely reluctant to act, dismissing concerns as "scaremongering" and claiming that it was "all part of the game".

Just as Lupan thought he was getting used to the physically demanding training sessions the City staff put their players through, things suddenly got a lot more intense. This was the big one, and the fans demanded victory. Anything short of that was to be considered a failure, and everyone connected with the club knew it. One benefit of all the extra training - especially compared to that given at youth team level - was that the young striker was noticing marked improvements in his play even after just a few weeks. He wasn't about to become a world-beater in under a month, of course, but he was making the small, important steps. That said, he wasn't particularly expecting the demands of this particular training session, the last before the clash with their neighbours. Manager Konstantin Latifi, normally a jovial and mild-mannered sort, was spending most of it yelling at his team to do much better.

"Come on, Mihalcič, you'll be murdered in the league if you can't handle this!" was one shout directed at Lupan. "Get some blood on your boots, Elišev, that's what they'll be expecting of you!" was one directed at another player - midfield hard-man Kuzman Elišev - which made Lupan instantly wary of his team-mate, even if it was just a practice match.

Although he could feel his energy reserves draining, Lupan managed to push himself all the way and made it to the end of the brutally punishing training session exhausted but almost completely intact - another benefit of the demanding training regime of a professional football club being vastly increased fitness levels.

"Not bad," their manager reported back, still a long way from his usually cheerful persona, "but we'll have to play out of our skins if we're going to beat those bastards. And you're going to make sure we do beat them. Go get changed, and I'll have the team when you come back."

The reading of the team was something of a ritual at City, to be done after the training session, the day before the game. Sure enough, Latifi had the eighteen names written down on a sheet of paper waiting for the players to return. As usual, he read out the chosen eleven, and as was becoming usual, Lupan's name wasn't among them. He had made the subs' bench, though. Was it too much to hope that he'd get to be part of the action this time?

The day of the match dawned, and as afternoon turned to evening and the temperature began to drop over the Kinitar capital, the Stadion Orašii slowly filled up and the fans prepared to create a fiery display in the evening chill. Down below the Main Stand, two managers were fiercely impressing upon their players the importance of smashing their rivals into the ground. Just in case, you know, they weren't aware of that already.

"Win this and you'll be heroes. Win it well and you'll become immortal. Lose it, and for the next few months, your lives won't be worth living." These were Konstantin Latifi's parting words to his City stars before they headed into the tunnel and out into the cauldron. The first thing that hit them was the sheer wall of noise created by over sixty thousand fanatic, screaming supporters. This was on a whole different level to any other game, and there wasn't a single person in the capital who didn't know it.

The first half was frenzied, fierce and fraught with hot tempers. Even taking into account the highly physical and confrontational nature of the Kinitar game, four yellow cards had to be issued in the opening fifteen minutes, and things looked a long way from calming down. Kuzman Elišev had set the tone after just two minutes with a scything challenge that sent the visiting right winger into the advertising hoardings, and Mi'ato looked keen to reciprocate. There was also a football match going on somewhere amongst this chaos, and it even produced a couple of decent chances, with Mezak, the visiting goalkeeper, having to be on top form to preserve the deadlock. The away side managed to work some openings of their own, despite facing a torrent of jeers and abuse whenever they got hold of the ball, and City's number one Lipa Alpič was called into action several times, including one or two great reflex saves, but for the most part, the two sides were more interested in kicking each other than the ball, and it was no surprise when the opening period ended goalless.

"You're letting them into the game!" was their manager's reaction during the interval. "We need to be more physical out there, we need to show them we won't back down! We've had the best chances. Kuzman, Elif, it's your job to keep their strikers quiet. So why are they still getting a look in? They're not going to score if they're limping around the pitch. Get the ball up the field and the chances will come. They'll come for us if you keep control and make sure you win the battles. Go prove yourself to those fans!"

With these words still ringing in their ears, the second half began in much the same manner as the first. The challenges were possibly worse than they were in the first half, but the match official seemed less inclined to issue cards. The play, however, was going nowhere. With the ball stuck in midfield, Latifi turned to his bench for inspiration.

"Lupan, go warm up down the touchline and get stripped. You're going on."

The young striker could barely believe what he was hearing. He was to enter the war zone. He didn't like to think about the reception had he been on the touchline at the Lumar Beqiri, Mi'ato's ground - especially since visiting subs had already had all manner of objects and abuse hurled at them from the stand. And then, the fourth official was holding up his board, and it was his time.

"Substitution for City! Coming off is number fourteen, Marko Gačen! Coming on, please welcome to the Orašii, number twenty-seven, Lupan Mihalcič!"

And then, he was on the pitch in the biggest game in Kinitaria. Ten seconds later, the ball was at his feet. Another two seconds later, he was sent clattering to the ground by a man mountain in blue and white. In the time it took him to force himself to his feet, play was fifty yards away. No foul, of course, not for something so trivial. The same thing happened the next time he got the ball, and the next. Of course, Mi'ato were trying to scare the young lad out of the game. To be fair, he did then resolve that when he got the ball, he'd get rid of it as soon as possible - although that didn't necessarily stop some of the more cynical challenges, and he even gained a free-kick, as well as a pair of bruised legs. This is what he'd been put through in training, though, to condition him to the top levels - and although this really was a different level, and he was being outclassed most of the time, he could still cope with the challenges and get up and keep moving.

With time rapidly fading away and the scoresheet still blank, the game was still up for grabs. Clear-cut chances were few and far between thanks to both teams' bruising tactics, and it looked like a goal was out of the question, until Elišev lifted a perfect ball over the Mi'ato defence, Lupan ran onto it, the huge defender was closing from behind but he wasn't going to make it, shot, goal! The Orašii shook with noise! On his debut, he'd won the derby for City! Oh, hold on - it won't count. Offside. The linesman's flag was up, a sight which felt like a punch in the gut to the striker. With a bout of creative cursing, he jogged back to his position. Luckily, none of the match officials heard.

There would be no more chances. Full time arrived soon after, and the blood and thunder of a national derby ended in a scoreless draw, although it was an entertaining 0-0, as they go, and the debutant had held his own inside the lion's den. He'd even - almost - had his moment of glory. But surely the chances would come. They hadn't won, but that night, the future looked bright for Mihalcič and City.

Torgos Tribune ~ Wanderers Wrapping It Up?

As we enter the final matchday of the Qualifying process for the sixty-third edition of the World Cup, the Wanderers have already secured their passage to the Finals, despite being only second in their group. That is a unique scenario to this World Cup, as the hosts choice of format, allowing a certain amount of the teams in second place with the most points to automatically qualify rather than all of them being placed into a playoff. Despite the disappointment of the draw during the last match, it was enough to secure the Wanderers progression to Aguazul/Turori.

However despite that advancement secured, the Wanderers will still be rolling out their standard starting elven in the final match with Chenkorya. That is because Chenkorya currently is topping the group but the Wanderers have a chance to nick that title from them with a win at home of two goals or more. That is all the motivation that this side needs as they prepare to take the field in Stade de Torgos, with the home support looking to be the edge in the encounter.

Truthfully it is a bit of a revenge game for the Wanderers who had been leading the group until their surprise slip up in Chenkorya to end the first half of qualifying. The Wanderers have been chasing the opposition since then and despite have one of the best records in the qualifying, a better record than legends like Starblaydia, Valanora, and Krytenia to name a few, they are still maligned with just being the second place team in the group. While that might have been sufficient in past cycles for the Wanderers, this is a side now in the upper echelons of the footballing community and winning the group is something of a goal and standard to achieve.

Yes, the Wanderers are a top twenty nation and a team that is and has been on the ascension within the community for the last few cycles. Their record might reflect that, but it is winning the group that will be the complete vindication for a side looking for more confirmation of their progression as a footballing nation. All this coming off a time when there was many thoughts both domestic and foreign that Pasarga's footballing program was about to go the way of the buffalo.

Chenkorya is the final obstacle and one that needs to be overcome for both pride and for the standings. It is a nation's pride that is needing to be affirmed, not just the players. Pasarga has done little else in the international community besides the contribution of its sporting prowess (or lack therof). It is that additional context that makes the match all the more important, the games seem like battles, and the tournaments their wars. While Pasargans will never be describe as an aggressive people, their is still a strong sense of pride, of identity from those that came from the fallen Persian Empire to those that were forged from later immigrations. And that is a fire that cannot be put out and can rally a side that should in all other situations just sit aside and rest. This is a moment of destiny, this is a moment for all of Pasarga to reach up and go for the stars.

It might have been sixteen years since Aguazul had hosted the World Cup. Alfonso Ordoñez had been eight then, hadn't he? It...made sense. He thought.

In large part thanks to his father's connections as a referee, he had been at the match in San Pablo when Aguazul were held to a draw by Tretskivucia. His whole family had; as the oldest kid, Alfonso could explain the finer points of football to his attentive younger sister. Points like "sometimes you play bears."

He took it in stride, too young to appreciate how rare of an occasion it was, but didn't exactly become more appreciative as he grew. He was always just good enough, in whatever age group he played at, to keep advancing, and never be afraid he'd reached his peak. Up through the youth teams, into the first division, then the national team. Sure, it would be nice to start, but all the same, it was his chance.

And at least his domestic teammate, Isidro, would probably get a chance to start. Coincidentally, Deportivo Peralta had only had two national team players before them; again, a midfielder and a forward, both of whom had gotten to wrap up their World Cup careers at home in the 55th Cup. Even the one technically on the bench had come off it to score in his final game. It felt like a good sign. To play in the proper, for the home fans...Alfonso smiled and got ready for bed. Not long at all until the real show got underway.

Then the phone rang.

"Hello?" he asked nervously. Sure, it was one thing to get calls from his younger siblings and have to gently remind them that he was in another time zone entirely after an away qualifier, but they hadn't needed the qualification stage...

"Hey, Ordoñez," said Coach Rebuelta, and Alfonso felt himself exhaling. "Are you all right?"

"Sure. What's up?"

"Just checking in."

"It's getting late, is everything all right?"

"I...if you're okay."

"What's happening?"

"There's been an...incident at the Estadio Aramis Peralta."

Alfonso gulped. "The regular season is over, I don't know anything about that."

"Okay. That's all right. Go ahead and rest up, we'll need you fit for the proper."

"Rebuelta?"

She'd hung up.

"Rebuelta?"

The Curse of the Unicorn
Chapter 4: Staying Alive

It was late evening in Carpathia and Ruthenia as the crowds packed in to the home stadium. Locals and foreigners from the Equestrian States made up the vast majority of the horde that descended upon the stadium, with a smattering of assorted other nationalities. Before the qualifying stage had seen its first match, it was already known that the match between Carpathia and Ruthenia and the Equestrian States would probably be one of the most decisive in group eleven.

And indeed it was. The home side was ahead by a single point on the table, and a win for Carpathia and Ruthenia would clinch them a playoff spot. But if the Ponies won, it would be near impossible for Carpathia and Ruthenia to advance as they would need an Equestrian States loss and a win the next week. A draw would only postpone the deciding of the final outcome of the group, leaving both teams in contention for the coveted playoff spot.

The crowd was clearly divided between the two sides. There were few in attendance that didn’t have a favorite, and those that remained neutral were almost exclusively non-Equestrian foreigners. But one pony, a black-cloaked unicorn, was not rooting for the Equestrian States; rather, he intended to act against the team he loathed with a passion. He felt wronged by the Ponies’ past arrogance, ignoring their fans and leaving them rejected. So he had taken matters into his own hooves, determined to humble the team that had rejected his support without a second glance.

A shrill whistle pierced the crisp evening air, inciting the crowd to roar as the two teams began their 90-minute-long duel. Fury flowed through the veins of the unicorn as he tracked his first target. Pathfinder had proven himself worthy of his place on the Equestrian under-21 squad, and was already making a heavy impact on the home team, stopping several drives on goal by himself. It was clear enough why the Seaddle Sounders had signed the 18 year-old stallion straight from their academy, and thus it was also clear to the unicorn why Pathfinder had to be stopped.

Drawing on his own dwindling supply of magical energy, and the still vast reserves found in the amulet tied to his cloak, the unicorn subtly pressed the pony’s leg inward as Pathfinder made a sharp turn. As gentle as the magical burst was, it was more than enough to force Pathfinder’s knee into a twisted shape as the pony’s legs buckled. Meanwhile, the forward the pony had been trying to stop blazed past Pathfinder, faked once to his left, and fired a lightning bolt by the distracted Equestrian goalkeeper. The unicorn smiled smugly in the crowd as Pathfinder was carried to the sidelines and the score moved to a 1-0 lead for the Ponies’ foes.

Rocky was the next to fall. As the earth pony galloped by the home team’s defense, one of Carpathia and Ruthenia’s players made a final bid to slide tackle the swift Equestrian forward. Normally, Rocky would have been able to leap clear over the aggressive defender, but the unicorn’s magic held his hooves down. Tumbling to the ground, Rocky watched helplessly as the ball trickled away and was seized by the opposing defense well outside of the goal box. Standing, Rocky continued to play, but with a noticeable limp in his right foreleg. By the end of the half it was bad enough that head coach Twilight Striker was forced to pull him from the field in favor of a healthier player.

As the match's first 30 minutes came to a close, the Ponies were trailing by three goals and three players, having lost goalkeeper Nightflame when the pony collided with a teammate trying to snag a header from the goal. But out of nowhere, Krystal the unicorn darted between two of Carpathia and Ruthenia's defenders, stealing away the pass and threading the ball through the reaching arms of the goalkeeper to pull the Ponies within two goals. Alas, for the Ponies it was the last act of Krystal that night. Acknowledging the threat posed by the player, the black-cloaked unicorn brought down the temporary team captain.

Thirteen minutes and one injury later, Nightwing swooped in upon the opposing goalkeeper with no warning. Blasting a precision shot along the goal line, off the crossbar, and into the net, the pegasus with bat wings brought the Ponies within one goal of equalizing the score.

Early in the next half, the black-cloaked unicorn took down yet another Equestrian defender, leaving the already weak back line severely diminished in strength. The home team seized upon the injury and the energy of the crowd to double the size of their lead. With 15 minutes left to play, the Ponies were again trailing by two goals. But Leo, the young lion from Everfree, roared back with the ferocity of his species, bowling over several opposing players on his way to the goal. One kick later, and the Equestrians were once more competing for the draw.

The minutes passed quickly; and few seemed to notice when Leo was pulled from the field with a curious cramp in his side, they were so intent on watching the action. The noise of the crowd swelled as the minutes seperating Carpathia and Ruthenia from a playoff berth dwindled ever lower. But as the fans began to take out the champagne, Nightwing struck once more. It came from well beyond the goal box, but the bat pony's strike was true to its target. As the Ponies celebrated wildly on the field, the black-cloaked unicorn cursed himself for not eliminating Nightwing earlier. It was a mistake he was intent to fix the next week as the Ponies looked for their own revenge against the team that had given them great concern after their previous meeting. A win was a must, and the black-cloaked unicorn was determined to destroy that final hope.

DBK Sports – Football – Blackwell sacked

Written by Pierre Darezi

Colin Blackwell, the manager of our national football team, has been sacked after about five years in charge. The 62 year-old Euran manager was relieved of his duties due to a poor World Cup 63 qualifying campaign which saw us finish sixth in Group 18.

Blackwell took charge of our team in 2014, and guided us to fifth place in our World Cup 62 qualifying campaign. During his spell (which is the longest of any manager of our team), there were numerous occasions where the fans wanted him to be sacked. However, the terms and conditions of the deal provided by the FA of Eura/The FSSO said that he could only be sacked if we finished lower than our seeding position in World Cup 63 qualifying. Because of the fact that we finished sixth in qualifying as the fifth seed, we decided to sack him immediately after our last game in World Cup 63 qualifying, a 3-2 win over Secundus Kasius.

The head of our FA, Peter Gwynneth, said: “We had to sack Blackwell after our disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign. This was the first opportunity we had to sack him, so we thought “Why not?” and bang, he’s gone. Colin Blackwell is no longer the manager of our team.”

Luke Homewood: We are through. But in the playoffs. Everyone is happy winning six one against NMS is quite surprising. Raiyaan Malik and Sameer Jaklim scoring hat-tricks. While on the other side of play. Osama Homewood doing a great job there. Now we will be against Darmen in a two legged playoff for the Group Stage. More on that match later on. How did we win that match against New Montreal States, It is really surprsing. After that win we went through in second and then into then came in the 12 worst second placed team. And now we are going in a playoff round against Darmen. First Time will be at Darmen's place and then the second leg at home turf. I hope it goes well and then we will be able to go through to the Group Stage.

OOC: Can't Finish Unfortunately because of my time on this.

World Cup Qualifying Review

KALEDOR 2 - 3 NEW ECOPIA
The Knights began with a surprising, but deserved home defeat by fellow debutees New Ecopia. Two goals from Rashad Hussein Qasim and another from Antoine Lefèvre left the Knights with an uphill struggle. Kaledor though did show some character as Sir Safir and Sir Bedivere pulled two back for the Knights to make the scoreline more respectable.

Projected Points At This Stage: 3
Total Points: 0

MYTANNION 0 - 0 KALEDOR
The Knights picked up a surprise point in Mytannion as Goalkeeper Sir Gawain put on an outstanding performance to keep the opposition at bay. The result was marred though when the game was suspended with ten minutes to go as fans invaded the pitch and rioted.

Projected Points At This Stage: 3
Total Points: 1

KALEDOR 1 - 0 PATRICANT
The Knights recorded their first win of the qualifiers in a full-blooded encounter against Patricant. The winning goal came courtesy of a powerful downward header by Sir Tarquine.

Projected Points At This Stage: 6
Total Points: 4

WEST GUIANA 0 - 0 KALEDOR
The Knights gained another good point on the road as they held West Guiana. However, after having the majority of the chances during the course of the game, most considered the tie two points lost rather than one gained.

Projected Points At This Stage: 6
Total Points: 5

KALEDOR 0 - 3 MILCHAMA
Milchama brushed the Knights aside at the Coliseum, resulting in the home side being jeered off the pitch. Cochava Cohen, Itai Sashkosh and Valerie Meloy scored the goals as the Knights defence was dismantled by superior opposition.

Projected Points At This Stage: 6
Total Points: 5

THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC 3 - 4 KALEDOR
Having only scored one goal in their last four matches, Kaledor were involved in a goalfest thriller in Quebec. Thunderbolt Charles put Quebec in the lead after 10 minutes, only to see goals from Sir Kay and Sir Galahad turn the tie in Kaledor's favor.
Seo Weon would equalize for Quebec, before Sir Galahads’ curling effort put the Knights back in front on 65 minutes. Thunderbolt Charles would once again level the scores for Quebec, but the Knights would not be denied as Sir Galahad completed his hat-trick with seven minutes remaining.

Projected Points At This Stage: 9
Total Points: 8

KALEDOR 1 - 0 TIMFEN
A great second-half performance allowed Kaledor to record their first back to back wins of the campaign. Sir Bors scored the solitary goal with a fine header from Sir Tristram's free-kick.

Projected Points At This Stage: 10
Total Points: 11

PUGH 0 - 1 KALEDOR
The Knights had to defend like terriers in a physical encounter as they edged past Pugh. The winning goal came on 38 minutes when Sir Tarquine lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper into the net.

Projected Points At This Stage: 13
Total Points: 14

KALEDOR 1 - 0 THATIUS
The Knights recorded their biggest win of the campaign as they surprised Thatius. With the game still scoreless after a fairly even encounter, Sir Kay would net the winner in a crazy penalty area scramble in the final minutes.

Projected Points At This Stage: 13
Total Points: 17

NEW ECOPIA 0 - 2 KALEDOR
The Knights got revenge over New Ecopia for their opening day defeat with a comfortable victory. The opening goal came on 61 minutes when Sir Tarquine touched the ball in from Sir Tristram's cross. Shortly after, Sir Kay headed in from Sir Safir's free-kick to put the result beyond doubt.

Projected Points At This Stage: 16
Total Points: 20

KALEDOR 0 - 1 MYTANNION
The Knights five match winning streak was halted expectedly by high-flyers Mytannion. In a game of few chances, The Knights put eleven men behind the ball in the hope of sneaking a point. But Mytannion broke the Knights line on 71 minutes to take all three points.

Projected Points At This Stage: 16
Total Points: 20

PATRICANT 1 - 0 KALEDOR
The Knights didn't expect to fall foul of a shock defeat at Patricant. But they had no answer as Patricant overpowered them, despite having fewer chances. It looked as if the Knights had held on for a draw until with just four minutes remaining Patricant headed in a winner.

Projected Points At This Stage: 19
Total Points: 20

KALEDOR 0 - 0 WEST GUIANA
The Knights dominated for large spells against West Guiana, but the Guianan keeper kept them in it with three fantastic saves. Still it was another solid performance from the Knights against a team they were expected to get nothing from.

Projected Points At This Stage: 19
Total Points: 21

MILCHAMA 1 - 0 KALEDOR
A battling Milchama performance saw them prevail over the Knights. It was a case of what could have been, as Kaledor had plenty of chances but it was often a one man show with only Sir Tristram putting in any effort. Cochava Cohen would score the winning goal on 38 minutes, as Milchama became the only side in the group to produce the double over Kaledor.

Projected Points At This Stage: 19
Total Points: 21

KALEDOR 4 - 2 THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC
After failing to score in four consecutive games the goals finally started to fly in again against Quebec. Thunderbolt Charles put Quebec in the lead early on, but Kaledor had a healthy advantage by half-time. Sir Tor equalized with a glorious header, before Sir Safir converted a penalty. Sir Tarquine then put them 3-1 up with a curling effort.
Thunderbolt Charles pulled one back for the Quebecans early in the second half, before Sir Tarquine wrapped the game up with 12 minutes remaining.

Projected Points At This Stage: 22
Total Points: 24

TIMFEN 0 - 1 KALEDOR
The Knights were now in a four horse race for third spot by the time they visited Timfen, and they held onto third position with a narrow victory. Sir Tarquine scored the only goal after 8 minutes from a diving header.

Projected Points At This Stage: 22
Total Points: 27

KALEDOR 2 - 0 PUGH
The Knights took the expected three points against winless Pugh. They took the lead after only three minutes when Sir Tarquines’ low drive found the bottom corner. On 63 minutes they finished the game off when Sir Galahad chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Projected Points At This Stage: 25
Total Points: 30

THATIUS 0 - 1 KALEDOR
It was a straight shoot-out between Thatius and Kaledor for third spot now, so it was convenient they would meet on the final matchday. Despite being under constant pressure throughout the match, The Knights would sucker punch Thatius with nine minutes remaining when Sir Tristram broke on the counter attack and crossed in low for Sir Tarquine to tap home.

Projected Points At This Stage: 25
Total Points: 33

Final Verdict
The Knights have more than achieved what they aimed for in their first shot at qualifying for the world Cup. They had only expected to finish mid-table, so being eight points higher than predicted and the closest team to the top two of their group shows how well they've done. Now the Knights will have to wait to see if their performances warrant an invite to the Cup Of Harmony.

Syndicatian Send Off
Flisgive, THE INEVITABLE SYNDICATE---- After a thrilling match in Fligsive against Asteran, the Syndicate have ended their tour in the World Cup 63. A 4-0 Win against Asteran at home gave the team a nice three points to end the season with. The season has had it's ups and downs, as we were second at one point, but alas, it was not meant to be, as some crushing defeats bumped up down the table. I'm sure the Syndicate tried very hard, and I'd say for a first outing, we didn't do too badly! 97th out of 180 is great! Congratulations to the Syndicatian team! As for the players, we haven't heard any word on transfers or firings, so morale seems to be high. Now, the Syndicate are looking to see if they are eligible for the Cup of Harmony.

He woke up to the sound of the birds. One day after the match against Exrasus, he had luckily already forgotten about how they were left out of direct qualification by one goal. Why couldn't they score some more? I mean, if you score five, you can score six. It was all a part of the past now, they hadn't been eliminated yet, and that was good. Against them were the Equestrian States, who they were going to face soon. The hoofballers were mostly injured and they were an easy opponent, but you never know what's going to happen until you're inside the pitch, and that was exactly what he feared. His desire for winning also gave him a fear for losing, and it certainly wasn't a option. His mind was always concentrated on the game, he never looked outside the pitch, and once he was outside, he never stopped thinking about what the team had failed to do. Now that he had calmed down, that the ghost of not managing to qualify despite their awesome run was gone, he only concentrated on training. The team was on very high morale because of their awesome run until then, but the Equestrians were most likely going to collide with them with as much as they could, they just as them had never qualified, though the Farves were new at play-offs, while the Ponies had just lost all of them. He thought of it and felt slightly relieved, but he knew he had to do anything and everything to qualify. It was his dream, and probably everyone there's. Ever since he was a little child sunk in Ruland's poverty who only found consolation in football he had wanted to get to play one, and they were just so close that he could taste it. He started remembering when he was little child...

He woke up again, another night of horrible sleep. As a child, he couldn't sleep in a bed, it was too expensive and teh only one they had was for his parents, which he was lucky to have alive as it certainly wasn't common. The only thing that prevented him from crying everyday was football. Good, old football. It was the only thing that could take a poor Rulandese to being a rich Ferdullaelan. Every little child's dream, why would he be special? Maybe because he was extremely determined, it was his only life goal afterall. He continuously played football with his friends. It was quite magic, football was sacred there. Nobody would shoot you while playing football. Not even if you had money. The Rulandese often found that as their only escape from reality. Now, it's not to say that if you're rich and you're playing football you're safe, but you're not getting shot as an average Rulandese, that's for sure. He was by far the best player among his friends, mainly because he took every match as a matter of life or death, though this was literally true sometimes. His passion, his speed, his endurance, everything. He was waiting for a scout to show up. The big teams knew very well that many talents lied in Ruland, but they also knew the risks. That's when they started hiring people that'd disguise as Rulandese, take an extremely long and certainly not rewarding journey there by horse or similar, and start scuoting little kids. Once they fuond someone who they deemed good, they'd have to keep it as much of a secret as possible. The team would later ongive the family a new house in their state and give them food, water, jobs, etc. It was basically play football or die in this hell-hole. But it wasn't easy, everyone knew the drill, he was no exception and, though he was good, his chances were just as minuscule as everyone else's.

No scout would ever show up. To top it off, he suffered of some mental disorders, though not diagnosed at that time. It didn't really help, he couldn't stop thinking about how he'd die without knowing what transparent water looks like. Reality was harsh for him. Until he had a realization. No, he was too good to stay in such a hell-hole. He just couldn't stay there. His will had to win. He had to win. It certainly wasn't easy to think exactly how. He couldn;t be even noisy there, everyone had some way of killing you, regardless of age. He was a little kid, ten years old. He was running out of time, as well. He then thought of travelling to Ferdullaele, by himself, and try to enter a team. It sounded extremely hard, but slightly feasible. He didn't think about it twice. He knew how to get there, his grandfather had a map of all Farfadillis. He was good at analyzing, despite his lack of attention. He could concentrate a lot on what he liked, though. He analyzed, analyzed again, and quickly planned when to leave. His family couldn't know of it. They'd reject the idea and keep an eye on him to prevent him from leaving. Afterall, it was too dangerous. He didn't know exactly how to make his parents worry less, afterall, he didn't know how to write. He decided the wisest thing to do would be leaving without notice. The night was the only moment where he;d be relatively safe, so he decided it was the perfect moment to leave.

He didn't doubt, left quickly and without any noise, he tried to wander through the less inhabited streets, the journey was long, but in half an hour he was already lost. It was then that he heard a silent voice, speaking to him. It was a feminine voice, she called him, obviously not by his name. He walked to her innocently, once he arrived, she talked to him, it was all a nice conversation, though very weird, then he mentioned his plans of going to Ferdullaele, to which the nice woman said she could help him get there, she knew a guy. It was all maybe too weird, but truth is he left Ruland in a car that was rotting with a bunch of old men that couldn't stop threatening him with death and other things. All in all, not good, but at least he somehow, without even noticing, managed to get on the way to Ferdullaele. He liked to always aim high, so he was planning to go to Ferdullaele FC's trials. A team renowned in Farfadillis for scoring three goals per match, and that back then had monopolized Farf football thanks to their national star Dorfon Mollic. There was a long way left, though, so he had t concentrate on arriving in one piece and alive. They still had to go round he Rulan-Dujan Monutains and the entirity of Induja, having to go round the forest. Only God could know what awaited him...

"And that's it, Neuman wins 6-3."
"It's truly been a blast!"
"Yes, Neuman started off by winning by no less than four-nil, but found himself a bit distracted and Tuzzio managed to send three balls in incredibly fast. Now anyone could win it, in the end Neuman started taking things more seriously and with two goals with Bates managed to pull off a win."
"Still, pretty interesting that Tuzzio didn't use himself to score, right?"
"Yes, it probably surprised more than one. He used himself as some sort of assister, while O'rosso, Johans and Dandalleion scored, with the last having done it twice."
"It was a truly spectacular game, wish it had been real life"
"I think more than one wishes that, though not anyone back at Farfadillis, huh?"
"Agreed."
"Alright, the players are leaving, they're about to turn the lights off, it's been a good game, but we gotta go. See you later, watchers!"

With the 3-2 victory over Carmadin on the final matchday in Group Six action, the All Greens have secured a spot in the playoffs, and will face Boring Paradise for the honor of competing in the World Cup.

Following the match, one of the Caramadese Managers, Kihxaw Jahp, through a fit, stating, "we let them off the hook," and a lack of practice for the team's loss. He then went on to confirm that he is indeed a man. Forward Heht Nikh commented that they "played to win the game" but that the All Greens were the superior team.

"Hey, whatever, we won, and that's all we care about," said Timothy O'Donahaue.

Bryan Faulkner opened the scoring in the 17th minute, firing the ball past Raehzoys Ohcheht, the Tim City Cyber Rays starting goal keeper. Xer Xán responded quickly, heading the ball past Kimi Siesman in the 27th minute. Tor Tong Lee volleyed a shot past Ohcheht in the 37th minute off of a Gene Turko corner, and Darmen led at halftime, 2-1.

The Pitch Invaded

Xer Xán scored his second goal of the match in the 47th minute, equalizing the score at two a piece. But in the 77th minute, defender Charm Vue rose higher than the Carmadese defense, and headed the game winning goal past Ohcheht for the match winner. About fifteen minutes later, the 86,000 fans that attended the match at the Borg El Beat invaded the pitch, lifting the All Greens onto their shoulders, and carrying them around the pitch, before letting them down to go into the dressing room.

Tonights match against Boring Paradise will be played at the 110,000 seat Bronco Stadium, the first international match that that stadium will host. The DSF had originally planed to play any playoff match at the National Stadium, but decided against it after early ticket sales showed that more seats were needed.

The only previous meeting between the All Greens and Boring Paradise was during the Fourth Darmen Exhibition Series. The match ended in a 0-0 draw. Boring Paradise is ranked 63rd, while the All Greens are ranked 44th.

With the next two days being dedicated to the playoffs for both teams, the post-qualifying match of the Sixth Darmen Exhibition Series between Sargossa and the All Greens has been rescheduled for the evening of the 24th. It will still be played at the National Stadium.

The boys are leaving the World Cup 63 with no regrets. After one last sight seeing tour, the gang green are leaving as we speak, for the Cup of Harmony 55. "We are glad to have smashed all expectations for a rookie squad to the World Cup, especially in such a talented group, with Saugeais, Gordonopia, and, well, you get it. Now, we go to take on teams with our level of talent. We can't wait to get there!" The team left from airport Commonwealth-Scallions Regional Airport, in, well, Scallions. We'll have our eyes on them. From Old Crustville, I am Alec Watson, saying, until we meet again, I'll be watching these guys like a hawk.

10 Kericia 18 1 2 15 5 33 −28 5

It's over.
Jedi8246 somehow couldn't beat Velkomorave, and Darmen beat Carmadin, so it's over. Finished, decided, engraved in stone.

Meanwhile, we drew Powersith 2-2 to finish seventh. Granted, we weren't a bad seventh at 9-2-7. And Bryan Ferguson wasn't exactly an international hit in the other things.

Top Three Things to Improve

1. The D
-Darmen and Pacificius. Those are the teams in the group with Ds worse than us. Darmen is good: their offense scored fifty-six goals. Pacificius sucks- they scored seventeen. (Hey, it's not last- Kericia scored 5. In 18 games.)
But the Llamas, at 37-34, can improve both ways. A good D would be nice: will Tony Brisbane stay? He played well in the latter half of the tourney.

2. The Pressure-Cooker Situations
-The Llamas were pretty clutch. But they had first place. At one point- two ahead, in first. Since then- not too pretty.
The Llamas can't just be clutch in the second half versus a bad team. They have to WIN BIG GAMES. Period. Exclamation Point. Bold-Italicize-Underline.

3. Injuries, injuries, injuries
-Tyson Richards, Ryan Jefferson, Jeff James, Bobby Crosby, etc. etc. etc.
We have good players, but injury-free players would be nice.

All in all, however, a nice success for the Llamas.
See you at the Cup of Harmony!

12. Vitarii 3461
Mi'ato, Kinitaria

Three years had passed since young Lupan Mihalcič had been given a turbulent introduction to life in the world of professional football, and almost introduced himself with a derby-winning goal, only to be denied by the offside flag. But life went on. There would be many more chances, he thought, and he was to be proven right. The punishing training regime at Mi'ato City FC was also generating its benefits, and the striker was significantly quicker, stronger and tougher than he had been three years previously. It showed on the pitch - his first goal against Ajbental was a cherished moment, but there had been more since, and he was establishing himself as a capable member of the team who was usually well in line for a first-team place. There was also silverware. The 3460 Kinitar Cup had gone to City following a stunning cup-run in which they could do no wrong, the trophy being captured thanks to a 3-1 win over Tirinthea in the final - even the highly-rated Tirinthea forward, Luka Sabčot, was powerless to stop City's march to the cup. Life at Mi'ato City was looking good.

However, all was not well in the land of Kinitaria. The nation was only ten years since overthrowing a dictatorial Stalinist regime, and while there had previously been a period of transition, characterised by hope of a better future, this hope was rapidly fading. Transition to a capitalist economy had been a disaster. Unemployment shot up, people's life savings became worthless almost overnight and the nation was cast into economic turmoil. Rumour had it that the right-wing Progressive Party government was planning to impose a curfew, or even martial law. Signs of unrest, although sporadic, were present.

And as for the effect of this upon the running of football in Kinitaria - well, attendance figures didn't take a massive hit, surprisingly. For decades, it has been the view in Kinitar society that a football match is somewhere the working class can go to channel their frustration after a week's work. Kinitar football always was a working-class game, and in Kinitar society, that is not a pejorative way of thinking about it. But the social unrest was also creeping into the game. Violence in the stands became a common sight at grounds up and down the country, often to such a scale that the police were powerless. The Federation, while not as powerless, didn't seem to want to take a stand on the issue. It's all a part of the game, isn't it? Crews of ultras, such as Mi'ato City's Gate 30, rose to prominence in this time. The events that were to follow seemed entirely predictable, but that's hindsight for you.

It started with a completely innocuous match in the first round of the Cup. SSKA Mocra, an entirely unremarkable team from somewhere in the lower reaches of the leagues, were brought to Mi'ato and beaten 6-0, with Lupan grabbing two of the goals for himself. Job done, onto the second round. City came out of the hat for a home draw with... Olimpia Mi'ato. The capital's third team, who never really did anything to bother the big two, and hadn't met either in years thanks to a discrepancy in leagues, but still with a sizable, loud and passionate fanbase drawn mainly from the working-class areas of the city. In contrast, Mi'ato City themselves were widely regarded as a team of the rich and aristocratic, which didn't win them many allies across the country.

Many people associated with City thought they could afford to be complacent about the upcoming fixture. They had a team of stars, while Olimpia had a team made up from those triallists that the big two didn't want. One person who wasn't sharing in the complacency was team manager Konstantin Latifi, still in his position at the club, and determined to make sure that his team didn't go into the match with the wrong attitude.

"It's not just a matter of just turning up and waltzing away with the win," he would explain to them, "because Olimpia will be determined to prove that they can operate on a similar level to us. The fact that they can't is irrelevant. This is one match, anything can happen, and if we lose it, we're going to be the laughing stock of the nation. As the cup holders, it's your job to see that this does not happen. Losing would be nothing short of an embarrassment." This kind of rant would continue on a regular basis until the day of the match itself.

From what the Olimpia camp were saying in the media, it looked like they were prepared to make a day of it. "We're not in the tournament to make up the numbers," was the call from manager Ilir Teskurov. "We know we can beat City," was the quote from their captain splashed across the national press. As is mandatory ahead of a cup game, the entire nation was getting behind the plucky little minnows fighting to upstage their arrogant neighbours. Everyone outside the capital, and quite a lot of people inside it, wanted to see City come away with egg on their face. What was to happen would shock the nation, but not in the way they were hoping.

Game day dawned and the Stadion Orašii was packed to the rafters. As the players were in their dressing rooms and final preparations were being made for the cup clash, there was a disturbance in the stands. The players were not, of course, able to see what was happening, but they were able to figure it out afterwards. Apparently, the economic tension in the country was being manifest in the stands - white-clad Olimpia fans, being traditionally from the working-class shipping and docking areas of the city, had clashed with some of the "arrogant, bourgeois" home support. Running battles were being fought in the terraces, and no-one was able to stop it. The violence would simmer down of its own accord, though, and no-one seriously considered calling the match off over that - it happened all the time, after all. It was practically a part of Kinitar football. That's just how things are.

When the players emerged, the crowd was still boisterous albeit not as violent, and the match got underway. Lupan, who had been given a spot in the starting eleven, immediately set about the Olimpia defence and found it surprisingly unresisting, possibly because he was used to a much higher standard of opposition. The talk of the Olimpia team in the media looked irrelevant already, and after just a few minutes, the predictable start had come to pass and City were 1-0 up. Lupan wasn't involved in the goal - it was a fine header from his strike partner, Ralo Finičev, and came as a natural result of the heavy pressure that the holders were already applying. The goal was the catalyst for a nasty reaction in the stands as sporadic fighting broke out once more and - was that a flare thrown into the away end? - well, they're doing no harm to the game, so play resumed.

Following the restart, City found it more difficult to break down their opponents, but still overwhelmingly dominated the half. A combination of luck and scrappy defending, plus a couple of world-class saves from the visiting keeper meant that they remained 1-0 up, when they could well have had ten. Frustration began to set in for City, and the half-time break seemed like a welcome respite to regroup and come out blazing once more. But they wouldn't get to the half-time break. A hoofed clearance upfield from the Olimpia left-back completely caught out City full-back Gačen, an opposing striker nipped in, goal. The travelling away support - at least eight thousand strong - erupted, and the South Tribune trembled with noise. Olimpia had got one over on their big city rivals, and even if they went on to lose, they would remember this moment forever.

It doesn't take a genius to get that sinking feeling that something is going to go horribly wrong in the next few minutes. That's exactly how Lupan felt seconds before he realised that the visiting supporters were spilling onto the pitch in numbers. Never mind that they'd not achieved anything yet, or that the game was only halfway done, they wanted to celebrate with their heroes. And the City players were in the way. No-one's quite sure what happened next, but a lot of City fans took exception to it, and they too decided to storm onto the pitch to take the fight to the upstarts from across the capital. Within seconds, the pitch was a battlezone with armies of thousands massing on each side. Fortunately for Lupan, he had the presence of mind to leg it up the tunnel - evading an irate Olimpia fan in the process - and heading straight for the changing room. He was joined by some, but not all, of the rest of the team, as well as the manager and staff.

Confusion reigned inside that small room. No-one dared to take a look outside, but at the same time, no-one had any idea what was going on. A couple of the missing players found their way back - there was hardman Kuzman Elišev, who looked like he'd been enjoying a fight - who reported that nothing short of chaos was going on outside. All they could do was wait, with no way to find out where the other players were or what was actually happening.

Gunshots. The loud, unmistakable sound rang around the room. And it didn't stop. Something that sounded like an explosion. The emotion in the air turned to one of panic.

The dressing room door burst open, and five burly, no-nonsense style men in military uniform marched in. And they were armed.

He stood on the precipice. During his long career, he had won had his share of success. A Gordonopia Cup win in the days of the old Republic, long before the GPL. Post-season qualification almost every year in the modern league. The Gordonopian single season assist record. It was truly a career that deserved recognition; one to be proud of.

But it was not complete.

After the disappointment of his final GPL season, he had one chance to truly make his mark for the sake of his country. These next two games would determine if Gordonopia would ascend to the ranks of the world's best, or simply remain a middle contender. While he had certainly done much to build up the Gordonopian National Team during its four cycles on the world stage, one thing was just barely within reach. World Cup Qualification.

Since becoming National Team Captain, it had been Norm Bates' single minded goal on the international stage. He knew from experience that Gordonopian football could be among the best in the world; its domestic league's fast rise was a testament to that. But to be a great sporting nation, qualification was practically a requirement. All that stood between Norm Bates and a trip to Aguazul or Tuori was a playoff against Mapletish. A hard match? Certainly. Winnable? Perhaps.

As he contemplated the games ahead on the flight to Struggait City, Bates had to reflect back on everything that had led up that point. The death of his father. His teacher and first coach convincing him to come back to the sport. Bill Herinrich bringing him from the slums of Tolten to the pitches of the Gordonopia Football Association.

His time during the war truly stood out. It was amidst the fires of Tolten under siege that he began to see himself as more than just an athlete. As he fought to overthrow the entrenched, corrupt Republic, a patriotic zeal, one based on a love of the future Empire, took root within him. When the bloodshed ended, and peace eventually returned, the National Team became the way for him to express this desire.

This latest campaign had been one that Norm would always remember. winning every single one of the first seven games, and watching as Saugeais imploded to give the 76 ranked Gordonopian team second place in the group in the final stretch had been magnificent. Earning a hard-fought draw with the FSSO to seal the deal had been just as sweet. Now he needed to make it perfect.

After he left the world of football, following the end of this cycle, Norm knew that he would at least be known as a great Gordonopian footballer. Now was his chance to truly leave a legacy.

This post is a continuation of the Norm Bates arc that I started in WC 61 and continued with a couple posts last cup. Just a heads up, since it isn't related to the video game storyline I've been following this cup.
If you ever have an RPing question, please TG me about it.

Postby Yesopalitha » Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:20 pm

To those of you who supported Yesopalitha and Unified Falcon in its many various domestic sports, my heartfelt thanks. The time constraints of being a full-time student at a University, having a girlfriend, and having a job, while volunteering, has severely cut back the time that I had to RP. I've prioritized to international events - the World Cup, the World Bowl, perhaps the World Baseball Classic, and Nation States College Football. Perhaps one day, Yesopalithan sports will make a comeback. Perhaps one day, I'll dig Unified Falcon out of the realm of those who have Ceased to Exist. But for now, RL>NS. Any players who have played in either of my systems are encouraged to return to their homelands or seek further employment elsewhere. Thank you.

What a day it had been for those of Yesopalithan football. What. A. Day.

Hilary Vander Rox sat back in her chair, looking at the sunset that blanketed the clear skies of Freedom's Altar. It was true that her playing days were over - and she did miss being out there - but it still left a thrill for her to be involved in this team that called itself the Flames, and the future that the team had couldn't be any brighter.

This mood, however, was tainted by the news that the Yesopalitha Sport Committee had dished out. Due to the financial crisis that was gripping the nation - the Riley Stock Exchange had fallen by more than 30% in the past two weeks - the Dark Council at the Dark Cathedral had disbanded the Yesopalithan Sport Committee. All the funds that had been used for domestic sports were to be relocated to the struggling exchange and the economy with the hopes that this would make a difference. Only the national squads were to remain as representatives of Yesopalitha to the world; the fans were asked to understand.

It would be an understatement to state that this was a shock to the peoples of Yesopalitha; they had fallen in love with the rivalry between North Hampton City and Unbidden United; the beauty of the Irkan City Swarm in baseball, and the Wurlington Dynamos of basketball; it was hard to think of Jonah Calhoun and Jane Vander Rox as players other than those of Unbidden United and Avengers United, respectively. However, none could argue the fact that the economy was facing a crisis that was more severe than any that the country had faced since its formation after Zaiden had given them the land that they called home. Instead of decreasing the living standard, or raising prices, the government was asking the people to give up sports - and professional sports at that - and instead rally them under the banner of international sports.

Those that had been hit the hardest, obviously, were the athletes themselves. Those that were international players could still have employment, but the amateurs and the hopefuls would now be relegated to regional leagues funded by companies, or semi-professional leagues that didn't pay even half of what they were used to. But, as the Freedom's Altar Times reported, 61% of athletes had agreed to this change before it happened, before it was known to the fans. A written statement from the Yesopalitha Professional Athletes' Union, at its' last press conference before disbanding, stated:
"It is true that this is our livelihood, that this is what we do for a living. However, we believe that since we have had the privilege of making more than the average Yesopalithan, and we are better off than the poor, it is our responsibility to bear the most of this crisis. We ask that the Yesopalithan society look upon us with favor and give us other employment opportunities that we can have while pursuing our dream of being national players."

All foreign players playing in Yesopalitha were released from their contracts after being paid their last season's salary. They were asked to return home, or seek employment elsewhere, while being thanked for their service and career in the Unbidden Communist Republic. Conversely, it was stated that those players of the national team and its reserves, as well as notable players of the league that didn't already play abroad would be permitted to seek employment in other nations to continue their career and help the future of Yesopalithan football continue without having its own league.

Jonah Calhoun, Jane Vander Rox, Jacques Kemp, Park Sung Hwan... many members of the squad that went 17-0-1 in the qualifiers and finished with 51 points, the most points of all the nations of the world, will be up for grabs. Many of them are looking to go to top teams from nations that are in the top of the UICA rankings, but the future for them holds many uncertainties that remained to be answered.

Hilary thought of her formal teammates and youngsters that faced this news. Jing Wong, Damian Garcez, Vance Briollet, Justinian Marquette, Eric Tupoa, Katerina Anderson, and Carlos Nunez had been told the hard news that they would not be traveling with the team to either Aguazul or Turori, depending on where the Flames were drawn to. These youngsters had a bright future, however, and deserved to play in other countries that still had a football system.

The twenty-three that would make it to the World Cup Proper had been thoroughly tested in the eighteen matches; the only loss of the Flames' qualifying campaign had been a 1-0 affair at the hands of The Pazhujeb Islands. The defense had been solid, giving up only eight goals in the whole campaign - second least, only to Taeshan - and Jacques Kemp, along with Park Sung Hwan, had shown up as reliable replacements to Ivan Dostoevich and Hilary herself. Nadya had been a total force up front, and Victoria Hellion and Brianna Carheim were a good duo to split playing time between.

It was a great day of Yesopalithan football - they would surely be ranked in the top fifteen in the next World Rankings - but at the same time, it was a bittersweet day, a day that should've never come, a day when a country that loved sports as much as the Yesopalithans had to cut off a part of themselves in order to survive the economic downturn that gripped the nation.

And they would look to the Flames team for hope, as well as the love that they had for sports. For as the rivalries that had developed, and the great storylines that had formed, were destroyed by the disbanding of professional sports, this act also rallied the entire nation behind the one team they could still support - the national squad.

It was a lot to take in, Hilary concluded. But the sun was setting, and time was moving on, rather mercilessly. The future was coming, whether she liked it or not...

What that future would be was anybody's guess.

Princess bails out Jeru FC

It was reveal today Jeru FC's failed World Cup campaign was sabotaged within. Severe budget cuts to the Jeru FC budget meant the Jeru FC team had to take pay cuts and this included the coach. Transport options were downgraded to economy and the team spent time in budget accommodation except Princess Melody who paid for her own hotel accommodation because she didn't like living in flea infested hotels. Assistant coach Princess Melody did actually get paid anything for her work either.

Even with this Jeru FC ran out of money after failing to qualify. This meant they were not going be able to get to the Cup of Harmony but Princess Sofia saved the day by providing the money to do so.

Coach Melody Pond has kept her job because it was apparent no respectable coach wants to work for peanuts.

After the close call with the hardware, the broken computer seemed to be in fine working order. Whether sending important messages or trying to stream football matches on the sly (alas, with Aguazul not having to play qualifiers, there were fewer opportunities for the military officials to take a break and patriotically watch the game together), everything was functioning well.

"Maybe you should back up your files," said one official to another.

"Why bother?"

"So...if the computer crashes again, you can get at them?"

"So what? We got over that last issue, we can get over it if something happens again."

"Yeah, but we'll get over it faster if...you do know how to back up your files, don't you?"

"Yeah."

"That did not sound convincing."

"I'm cool."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah!"

"Or is this a case of "why bother doing anything because we're gonna get overthrown anyway"?"

"No. That would be dumb."

"Okay."

"Do I look suspicious or something?"

"No. Unless, you haven't heard anything about secret meetings, have you?"

"Secret meetings? No. Are you planning one?"

"Personally? No."

"Can we get the boss to go on a secret meeting, and then steal his snacks?"

"No, okay, on thinking it over, I honestly don't think the rebellion would have much use for you."

"Sure they would!"

"Oh, and how come?"

"Because! I have military files on my computer!"

"...okay, then."

Playoff Round: 2-1 Darmen (A)
Playoff Round: Darmen (H) Win

Previously
Location: Green Knight Hotel, Paradisia, Boring Paradise, Rushmore

Luke Homewood: Well the first match of the playoffs were done and with another miracle of beating ranked 44th, Darmen 2-1. It was a close match between both teams as they both did there best but the visitors got the more chances on goal and one extra goal. This goal was a very good goal and made the win away. Next match we will be against Darmen at Home. So we a have a 2-1 lead coming to the match. We need a win or draw to go through to the group stage for the first time. If we lose the only good score for us will be a 1-0 loss. It is also the first time we will advance after the qualifiers in the World Cup Cycle. First attempt we did came 4th and with no CoH invitation. World 61 we came 4th with no invite. In last World Cup we came third with no invite. This time we came second with a playoff chance to go through to the World Cup. We also have an invite for the CoH. So either way we will be in a group stage after the next match. Unless we are too late to accept the invite for the CoH then we will have no where to go. So this is iportant that we win this matc against Darmen at Home. So we are secured and ready for the group stage.

Gary Hughes: Keep your hair on will you Luke. It is not so troubling. So here we are back once again to the nd of the playoffs. The match against NMS lead us into this position. So it is great we are here now with people who are really good like Darmen. Even though Darmen are worse than NMS. We should be able to beat them in the match at home. No doubt about it. Cameron Clark isn't with us now as he has gone with his other friends in this area. So just to round up. No injuries or cards in the match. Hishaam Ali opening in the 27th minute. Tor Tong Lee equalizing in the 53rd minute. Then came the man we waited to score. Raiyaan Malik scoring later than usual in the 90+3rd minute.

Sargoil Processing Station, Outskirts of Puerto Aranda, Santazuela’s Brantan Coast…

‘. . . and the chance is taken! Stabbed home by Echeverría. The captain leading from the front. And how important could that goal be come the final reckoning? It’s Kinitaria three, Sargossa two. Nestor, your thoughts?’

‘What a vital goal. I know it’ll still go down as defeat but psychologically a single goal deficit is much easier to reconcile than two. The boys have already shown their worth in Soluca with that crucial win over Taeshan so they know it can be done. Now they’ve got to . . .’

Overpaid wastes of oxygen. Those were the sentiments of the gate guard at the small processing facility on the shores of Lake Branta as he killed the telly with the push of a button. It wasn’t exactly a busy day. None of them were anymore. The facility had once seen plenty of business from the Sargossan oil production operation across the waters of the lake. Now the large hulled freighters took their black and sticky wares further south to Puerto Temuco and through the canal system to Ariaco. The occasional smaller vessel arrived to keep the skeleton staff occupied but they were few and far between. Which was why the gate guard felt able to sit back in his chair, tip his cap over his eyes and work on his beauty sleep.

The sound of a horn snapped him brutally from his reverie. Peering through the grubby glass of the security office he saw a covered truck in the entrance way, its engine growling nosily. What? He thought before pawing through the weekly security journal. It remained as blank as he’d remembered it being. So who was this? Sighing loudly, he resigned himself to breaking from his afternoon snooze to do some actual work. He unsuccessfully tried to arrange his uniform into something resembling authority and strode outside.

“Afternoon fellas.” He said, approaching the driver side window. “Can I help you with something?”

The window came down and a stubbled face greeted him. “Afternoon. We got a call out for one of your pumps. Apparently it’s on the fritz.”

The guard looked at him quizzically. “Are you sure? Nobody told me.”

The driver smiled. “You know what the communication is like in this place. Why tell the guys on site eh. You know what I mean?”

“Sure do. Come right through.” He turned back towards his booth before spinning abruptly on his heel. “Actually, I better take a peek in your truck. Routine.”

“Of course.” The driver exited the cab and gestured for the guard to follow. They headed to the rear of the truck where the driver unhooked the clasps and lowered the door with a loud clang. “All yours.”

The guard starred into the gloom, gloom that rapidly gave way to be replaced by a half dozen armed men. “What the fu . . .”, was all he could manage before the barrel of a pistol connected with the back of his head, plunging him into unconsciousness. He was unceremoniously shoved into the back of the truck while one of its passengers jumped out and made his way into the security booth. He routed around for a moment before finding the button that rose the barrier.

From then it became an operation of military precision as the elite team of eight men, all with Special Forces training, penetrated the interior of the facility. Two secured the dining hall, already earmarked as soon-to-be holding area, well the rest systematically moved through the admin building and housing block. They ushered a dishevelled and confused group of workers before them until they were safely ensconced within the catering hall.

“We’re one short.” One of the men approached the truck’s driver. “Intel had the staff numbered at 22. We’ve only got 21. Shall we do another sweep?”

“No.” Mauricio Danté said. “That won’t be necessary. He’s watching us now, from behind the motorpool.” He tilted his head slightly to the left.

“I’ve got him.” The second in command said, drawing his pistol. He was stopped by a hand on his arm.

“Leave him.” Danté looked him in the eye. “This will be a pointless exercise if no one actually notices it’s happening. Let him go.”

"...take a 3-2 lead into the second leg in Michael VII, and Amandeep Sahota's side will be hoping to recapture their early qualifying form, which saw them embark on an impressive unbeaten run before-" Benedict di Corradi turned the television off. Conflicting emotions. He'd never led the national team to the World Cup finals, and it still grated on him. But equally, as an Osarian -- a rather proud one at that -- he felt good about the Firebirds' chances. He wasn't really thinking too much about the football results though. His son, Alessandro, was coming around to visit shortly. He'd recently undergone therapy and treatment for clinical depression, and seemed to be recovering well, though the family had been advised not to mention football too much around him.

"It would appear that football is one of the primary sources of Alessandro's depression," the doctor had told the family, "and it will be likely that he will want to distance himself from the game, at least for a while." Benedict had remembered his bout with depression some time ago, and the problems he'd had. His eventual resignation from the position of national team coach was attributed to friction between him and the Osarian Football Association -- a misconception both parties had been happy to allow to perpetuate -- but in truth, he had needed to get away from the game for a while.

*ding dong*

That would be Alessandro. A peek out of the window confirmed Benedict's suspicions, as he spotted his son's black Vopara parked in the driveway. 'Ah good, Erica is with him.' He thought, noticing his son's girlfriend stepping out of the car -- on the driver's side, oddly enough. She had been his physical therapist while he'd been in rehab, his mood noticeably less gloomy when she was around. Benedict understood on some level that it wasn't as simple as many seemed to think; she didn't just "cheer him up" or "make him feel happier". He was certain that this woman would soon be his daughter-in-law. He'd had similar feelings regarding his wife, Claudia, when he'd gone through his problems.

"Hey, Ale!" Benedict greeted his son enthusiastically, and with an embrace. "Good to see you, son. How are you feeling today?"

"I'm okay, Pops." Alessandro half-smiled. He wasn't lying, he was literally "okay".

"And you, Erica," another embrace, and a double cheek kiss. "You look wonderful today, my dear."

"You're too kind, Mr di Corradi."

"Haven't I told you to call me Bene?" He reproached her in a mock stern tone. Alessandro's smile broadened a little.

"So, Pops, are you going to let us in?" Hints of the old Alessandro shining through, there.

"Of course, of course, my apologies son. Come in, come in." He ushered them into the house, closing the door behind them. "Your mother is in the kitchen, Ale."

"When is she not?" A chuckle. It sounded genuine. 'Don't get your hopes up yet, Bene, it could all change when Ria gets here.' Benedict told himself.

The retirement of Alessandro di Corradi shocked Osarian football three months ago, and when his older sister Maria announced her intentions to follow suit prior to the start of the new season, it seemed an almost anti-climactic end to a pair of careers that have been inexorably intertwined for the past twenty years. Firewood City had offered both players new contracts earlier in the year, but when Alessandro was sectioned for mental health purposes, all parties put talks on hold. Some have lamented the absence of the two experienced attackers toward the latter part of Osarius' latest World Cup qualifying campaign, with ex-pat Michaelean Arjen Miller expressing a great fondness for the duo.

"They're both supremely technically gifted, and players with their level of experience; we're talking about members of the Osarius squad that qualified for the World Cup under Montblanc, they've both played in, and won a Champions' Cup final too, and have something like 700 professional games experience between them," Miller explained, "that kind of experience is invaluable in a high pressure situation like a World Cup playoff." Miller was also at pains to point out that his home nation are not going to be easy to overcome on their own turf, too. "Not to sound pessimistic, but it's going to be extremely difficult to pick up a win over there, so it was imperative that we got one at Mount Crown Stadium. There's a fierce pride that Michaeleans have when it comes to sports -- myself not included, I suppose -- and losing at home is particularly hard for them to take."

Others have drawn attention to the fact that even when not playing at his best, Alessandro di Corradi displayed the ability to change a game during this campaign. "Okay, so he's done it twice with free kicks, but there's something different about the team when he's out there. The team responds to his every touch like some hyper-sensitive control system." John Holcombe elaborated. "It's not quite like watching how Alejandro Palacios pulls the strings for Aquillian -- because he's something else, it's almost as if he can see ahead what the best option is every time -- but there's a similarity to it. The team gravitates to him, it rotates around him, and he isn't consciously making it happen, he's just playing football." Some will point to di Corradi's languid performances this campaign, but Holcombe insists that the 33 year old's presence -- in spite of his recent health problems -- will be sorely missed should Osarius make it to the big stage again. "We know he's had his troubles lately, but for me that just makes him all the more impressive. To play as well as he did at times, despite the mental issues, that's a strong player that a team like Osarius, with a history of crumbling under pressure, may need."

In the past, Osarius have crumbled spectacularly under the pressure of playoff games or single games with similar levels of importance, and are probably one more loss away from being internationally recognised as "bottlers", a tag which national team coach Amandeep Sahota in particular will be keen to shed. His Hastmead Diamante side often suffered similar criticisms under his tenure, particularly after their period of great success a little over a decade ago. "I remember at Hastmead there was a lot of criticism that my team were contenders but didn't win enough after the back-to-back league titles," Sahota told us. "It's one of those things that drives you, though. For a long time I just wanted my team to prove people wrong, and I feel exactly the same about this Osarius team. It's a strong team and is more than capable of going to Michael VII and securing progression."

Some have suggested that Sahota will not be offered a contract renewal if Osarius fail to progress to the World Cup finals, though this seems like a harsh course of action. The experienced, former Hastmead boss has shown his value in several areas during this campaign, after a questionable start to his reign. His man-management skills are highly-vaunted, and rightly so; his handling of the di Corradi situation has drawn praise from many areas, and seemingly won him the trust of a lot of players. His dedication to his system, and apparent proficiency in drilling his players on the importance of positional play have earned him plaudits from pundits the nation over.

"Sahota's skillset is not too different from that of World Cup Hall of Famer Alain Montblanc when you break it down. He has a clear plan, a system, and a method of applying it that forces the team to pull together in one direction." Grasshoppers Turic manager Roberto Cormega explained. Cormega went on to express a profound admiration for a man who was briefly his managerial rival, highlighting the manner in which he is particularly skilled at ensuring that his teams are vastly greater than the sum of their parts. "At Hastmead he won the title twice with a team that realistically, nobody thought was actually that good. We'd been hearing about how 'the kids will come good' and all of that stuff for too long to really believe it anymore at the time, and then they overturned one of the strongest Firewood sides I've seen in a long time. All because he managed to cultivate this really deep team mentality that is rare among even the best teams in the world, I think."

"Hey kiddo, you realize we could throw you to the water to drown and nobody would ever know, right? I mean, your life's in our hands! Ha!", said one of the men, while passing a river. The current was certainly fast, and he never learnt how to swim. Fear was all he felt. He just couldn't distinguish jokes from strangers. Why was he doing that, again? Were his dreams worth it? Was he worth it? Would it end up fruitless? Would he end up dead? He started regretting things, regretting leaving his family, without even saying good-bye.

He thought of his family, they had probably already woken up, now they had to be searching for him. It wasn't a good feeling. More than one kind of emotion were battling for dominance inside him and sadness was winning.

A tear went all the way down his cheek from his wet eye. He tried to hide it as quickly as possible. If that bunch of dirty strangers saw it, he was a dead... child. He was ten years old for fuck's sake, what was he doing there? That was the thought that more than one person inside that rotting car, or van, to be more accurate, thought. Still, there was no way back now, he had to start planning exactly what to do. He had no idea of where Ferdullaele FC's trials were going to be, or where he'd actually end up. In a moment of clumsiness, he decided to ask the others where Ferdullaele's training ground was located.

Everyone looked at him with surprise, and let off some laughs after hearing that. It was certainly funny to them, nobody thought of that shy little kid as someone with such an insane dream as football. There were one fucking billion Farves, and he aimed for Ferdullaele? That was sick, at least to them.

It was all laughs until one man decided to make things more interest by suggesting something. He quickly said he had an idea, to which everyone looked rather surprised.

- How about a football match? We're six, three versus three, we could see how good this kid actually is."
- Sounds interesting - replied another one, who obviously had liked the idea.

Before anyone else would suggest anything crazier, he got up and expressed that he'd be up for doing it. Now that was a surprise for everyone, the little kid had stood up and said more than two words.

They all got off the van as soon as they could spot a nice grass field in which they could play. It took them a bit, say three or four minutes.

Once there, they quickly chose who would play for which team and kicked-off. He had to play with two random guys he didn't really know, but he played just as always. He was basically the only player inside the field, despite losing by miles in size and strength. He stole the ball from everyone, passed the ball, dribbled, scored, headed, crossed. He did everything with little space, and basically humiliated the entire opposite team. They weren't expecting the kid to be good.

After they all got tired, except him, they decided to continue their journey. They were roughly halfway through Induja, so also halfway there. They were much more respectful to him now, though. No jokes about horrible deaths and everything. No spitting, nothing. They all knew that little kid could bring up how he was way better than them at football, and how he wasn't even tired, while still being at least twenty-five years younger than everyone. The journey had turned slightly less oh-god-get-me-out-of-here-this-is-inhumane-ish.

He then decided to sleep a bit, he hadn't done it so far because he was extremely scared.

- Hey kid! Hey! Dude! Wake up! We're here! - he could hear someone saying.

He soon got up, thanked them all for bringing him there, thanked God for still being in one piece and alive, and left. He now had to figure out how to get to Ferdullaele FC's trials. He was a little kid, completely lost. Where the hell was he supposed to go? He asked many people, but the answers were somewhat complicated. He followed as much instructions as his attention span allowed him until it turned dark and the moon was up high. That's when he saw the crest up high in a very tall building. He knew he was there. He opened the door and quickly went in, running. He was way too excited, he had arrived! However, training was obviously not going to happen during night, so he had to wait, and sleep somewhere. But he did manage to ask the following day's training hours and everything, so he was happy. Another day in the street wouldn't break his spirit...

18th Annual Gordonopian Electronic Gaming Show
Gordonopia City, United Gordonopia

The massive auditorium was black as night. Tens of thousands of journalists and gaming industry representatives, from Gordonopia and abroad, sat virtually silent in the Grand Hall of the National Exhibition Center. As the Cronos Elite lifted Gordonopia to prominence within the gaming world, the Gordonopain Electronic Gaming Show, or GEGS, had grown exponentially since its start almost two decades ago. Now, perhaps the biggest moment in its history was about to unfold.

At the front of the massive room, a single spotlight, aimed straight down, turned on. It drew countless eyes as a clear rose from the stage. At the center of the stage, a single massive screen lit up, showing the scene unfold.

On the pillar sat a G-System; an aged piece of technology but obviously in mint condition. Gordonopian Game's original console, it was a relic of the 16-bit era, but still beloved by many of Gordonopia's older gaming fans. After sitting alone for several moments, a second spotlight lit up, adjacent to the first, as another pillar rose. This time, it was the GMEGA, the G-System's 32-bit successor.

This pattern was repeated as the two cartridge-based consoles were joined by the Cronos; Gordonopian Game's first disk based console. Finally, the Cronos Elite, the company's current generation console, rose from the blackness.

For a brief time, the consoles sat alone. As the tension in the room built, a fifth light shone down at the far end of the stage like a dagger, illuminating a lone man: Lord John Roark; the longtime head of Gordonopian Games. As Roark strode across the stage, the spotlight hovered over him, providing an image somewhat like a spaceship trying to beam him up.

When he stopped, he stood at the center of the line of consoles; a fifth ray of light in the middle of the stage. Finally, as he walked to stand behind the G-System, he broke the silence.

"In 1990, Gordonopian Games released its first sports game," he said methodically as the image on the screen was replaced with 16-bit gameplay. "GFA '90 was the title that kicked off the genre in Gordonopia, and to this day maintains a strong cult following. I remember working first hand with our developers to make sure that the experience was the closest you would find to football without stepping foot on a pitch."

Slowly, he moved behind the GMEGA as the game footage changed. "Five years later, football games entered the third dimension with GFA '95 for the GMEGA. Today, the polygonal players look crude, but at the time, it felt as if Howard Hawkins was at the tip of your fingers.

"When the Cronos came out in 2000, it was a football game that shipped alongside it, he continued as the screen altered a third time. "Gordonopia: Football launched with every top-level Gordonopian player in history, as well as game commentary for the first time. For a generation, it would define the genre.

"Recently, Gordonopian Games released World Cup 63 to the globe. As it became known for its innovation and massive set of features, it rose to become perhaps the best selling sports game of all time.

As the gameplay footage of the familiar game faded back to an image of the stage, Roark walked back to the center of the four consoles.

"One question about our football line remains unanswered: what will we do next. The release of [/i]World Cup 63 has left a burning desire to know what the next generation of games will herald; how they can possibly improve. Ladies and gentlemen, the next generation is now. I give you the Titan."

The stage flooded with light as a wider pillar rose above the four consoles. On it sat a sleek, powerful looking console; one that the public had never before seen. After several moments of focusing on the console, the massive screen changed to a montage of gameplay.

Jere Tobias of the Gordonopian National Team, rendered to such detail that he looked almost real, dribbled a ball before shooting it at keeper Jay Neuman. A couple more football scenes past, before the game shifted. A stunningly magnificent mountainous panorama panned to reveal Iln Djian, protagonist of the Age of Legends series, walking among the perfectly lighted scene, sword on his back. The game shifted to the post-modern world of Orion, with its majestic metropolises, before moving onto the cartoony platformer Hawker. Even the latter game, which intentionally avoided realism, was stunningly detailed, giving a gorgeous look at the system's lighting and color capabilities.

After the long montage ended, as the system's logo, a peaked mountaintop, was revealed, Roark began to speak again.

"The Titan represents an unprecedented leap over the Cronos Elite. With massively increased processing, graphical capabilities, AI performance, lighting and shadowing, storage, and online capabilities, this is truly the gamer's console. One only needs to look at the specifications," which flashed behind him on the screen, "to realize that this isn't simply a step forward. This is a titanic leap. The Titan is on par or better than even today's gaming PCs, and its gaming optimization allows developers virtually unlimited resources. This is the future. This is the Titan."

The Pitch was Green, the fans were Green, the Team was Green, but the result, was anything but!
Darmen drops home match against Boring Paradise in first leg of Playoffs

As 110,000 screaming fans fell silent after Raiyaan Malik scored the game winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time, just before the referee blew his the final whistle. With the one goal loss, Darmen has to ways to advance. Both require the All Greens to win. Scenario one sees the All Greens defeat Boring Paradise by at least two goals, and doesn't require the All Greens defense to be as stiff as a board. Scenario two will need the All Greens to win, but only needs the powerful offense to score three goals, which is exactly what they averaged during the rest of qualification.

As the fans entered the stadium before the match, an air of anticipation and excitement surrounded the stadium in downtown Scott City. Authorities report that only three fans were arrested, probably a record for any match involving the All Greens or international soccer in Darmen. However, the match had to be delayed for fifteen minutes as the pitch was cleared of debris by both squads. Hishaam Ali scored the opening goal in the 27th minute, much to the dismay of the Darmeni fans. The game had to be delayed once again, this time for only five minutes, as empty bottles and plastic trumpets and horns rained down on Kimi Siesman.

Tor Tong Lee supplied the only bright spot for the All Green's fans. In the 52nd minute, Gene Turko was fouled 22 yards out from the penalty box, and a free kick was signaled. While most expected Tor Tong Lee to give the tall players on the team a chance at a header, Lee bypassed them all and curved the ball past Boring Paradise Goalkeeper and Captain, Osama Homewood.

But with Malik's game winning, and ending, goal, the All Green's fans were subject to a long and silent ride home. Meanwhile, All Green's Manager Timothy O'Donahaue was forced to mull over what had gone wrong. "All in all I think we actually played alright. Our attack could've been a bit, what's the word I'm looking for? Effective."

Asside from Lee's free kick goal, the All Green's managed only three other shots, with only one of those requiring Homewood's attention. "We're hungry for goals," said All Green's striker Bryan Faulkner, "and we now how to get them. Now it's just up to us to execute and be effective."

Darmen will be facing a tough test on the road, with either a trip to Aguazul or Turori and the World Cup or a trip to Taeshan or Hutt River and another Cup of Harmony appearence awaiting them.
