Charumati flopped onto her back in the putrescent muck. Her open wounds throbbed, her bones felt shattered and her soft tissue ached. The stench in the room invaded every pore. A few hours ago, she would have screamed in indignation at the filth touching her skin. Now, as she lay there looking at the shattered ceiling, Mati took in every last sensation and felt gratitude, owning every ache and pain dealt to her by Atosh's fists because the agony reminded her of her survival.

She looked upwards at Cornelius' form danging in her protective sphere. "Hello, Emperor Popcorn," she whispered. "We've had a really shitty day." The irony of the statement wasn't lost on her, and her fatigue made her giggle. She contemplated sliding her arms and legs around and making a daemon-shit angel. "No time for that, Cornelius. You must have swallowed water on the way down. It's not for mortals, you know. I've got the antidote back home."

Home. The building. She didn't feel like the Void was her home anymore.

She moved his sphere to the upwards flowing water and let it carry him out before floating through the same hole. She set him on a table. Varqhed still hung by his makeshift nails, and Mati tore out his liver and ate it, replenishing her energy.

Fresh water poured in from several splits in the Banquet Hall's ceiling. Mati stripped off her soiled clothing. She stepped underneath a cold, fast-flowing rill and washed the filth from her body, purging it from every orifice and scrubbing her open woulds with her fingernails until the tissue bled cleanly. The open flesh was free from contaminants so she allowed them to start the healing process.

She examined Cornelius and found him no worse for wear. "Just poisoned by the water. Sorry, big guy, but I don't think you're augmentations work on that stuff. She lifted him gently and carried him from the hall, back through the foyer and out of the Tower. A moment later, she went through a newly formed golden door.

WASABI PEAS

An esoteric dialog between archenemies - Clover and Trout.

Trout sat at the edge of the pier overlooking the event horizon and chewed on a cigar stub.

"I s'pose it's better this way. Dead is dead. T'was expecting something more."

More what? Grand perhaps. Trout was expecting anything but what he was experiencing.

"Isn't there s'posed ta be a tunnel of light? Where's that? I feel ripped off."

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

"Beats the fuck out of me," Clover replied. She nibbled on a tender shoot of early spring grass and swung her legs over the edge, dragging her toes through the gravity well. "I guess, maybe, well... that tunnel isn't anything for the likes of you and me."

"Maybe. Maybe not. Dunno. What do your people believe?" He fumbled through his pockets for a lighter or some matches.

"I'd rather not say." She spat out the blade of grass and watched it elongate into infinity. "What about you?"

"I believe I'd be a hell of a lot happier if you hadn't kilt me."

Trout picked himself off the pier and headed back towards the shore.

Clover chased after him.

Trout paused where the wooden boards merged with the gravel path.

"No? Somehow I don't believe you."

"Does this look like a fucking bar, Clover? Does it? I don't see a pool table. Do you see a fucking pool table? Juke box? Cocktail waitress? Condom dispenser?"

Trout realized he had nowhere to go. He returned to the edge of the pier.

"That's because it isn't. We were in a bar and now we are not in a bar. We're here. You shot me. I died and ended up here."

"Oh no, no, no," Clover looked pissed off. "I didn't shoot you. I didn't kill you. If I did, why would I be here? What, your personal hell is to spend eternity with me, so I died too?"

Clover laughed.

"Sure you do. We share an occupation."

She lowered herself down next to him and swung her legs over the edge again.

"Trout, can I ask you something?"

Clove ignored his response.

"What does it all mean? All this? What's is supposed to symbolize?"
