Sportscene (Ancharmunn & Aels domestic sportswire)

Postby Tyneala » Wed Aug 15, 2012 5:54 pm

This thread is for domestic sports news from the Tynealan states of Ancharmunn and Aels. It will largely be used for lesser sports without international threads elsewhere, though some pan-Tynealan leagues in the larger sports may be posted here. Unless given explicit permission to do so I'd ask that unless you are Ancharmunn or Aels you refrain from posting in this thread.

Below will be posts from Ancharmunn and Aels with an index of their respective leagues to appear here.
(The poster behind this will be either Aels or Ancharmunn—if in doubt, please ask.)

Atlético Cabañas
Nickname - Los diacríticos
Ground - Césped Ribereño Magnífico, Ballyfeeaknock (6,000)
KitRed with white sash & green trim, red shorts
Sponsor - Pescaderías José (Fishmongers)
Manager – Faolán Puskás (Unknown, presumably exotic nation with a rather odd mix of ethnicities)
Captain – Mutimir Jozić (PAS) MC
Key players - Mutimir Jozić (PAS) MC, Cináed Mac Dónaill DC, Síoda Ó Coinín LW
Last three seasons – 1094-95 League 11th Cup 2nd round, 1093-94 League 9th Cup quarter-final, 1092-93 League 12th Cup 1st round
Prospects – Famed for their policy of signing only so called 'Cabañas effect' players – that is players whose names feature diacritics – Atlético used the mythical power of Cabañas effect to good effect in the early years of the National Soccer League by winning three of the first four seasons. Since then however they have endured leaner times, not finishing in the top three since 1086. Such a lack of results has led many in Ancharmunn to question the existence of Cabañas effect.

Image
Ballymairead Dynamos
Nickname - Dynamos
Ground - Old Chicken Ranch, Ballymairead (4,500)
KitRed and yellow hoops & black trim, yellow shorts
Sponsor – Turner & Son (Ubiquitous retailer)
Manager – Ossian Magee
Captain – Donal Griffin RB
Key players – Donal Griffin RB, Éibher Mac an Bhaird AMC, Aidan McDonnell MC
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 4th Cup winners, 93-94 League 4th Cup quarter-final, 92-93 League 5th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – Dynamos have in the last few seasons established themselves among the nation's top half of teams, yet as has the trend in recent times they remain the bridesmaids. Whilst Dynamos did add the All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup to their trophy cabinet last season it is their Old Chicken Ranch co-tennents Ballymairead Town who remain top dogs in town and on occaion nationaly.

Image
Ballymairead Town
Nickname – the Mairéads, the Sacrificers
Ground - Old Chicken Ranch, Ballymairead (4,500)
KitDeep red with blue top panel & burnt orange trim, deep red shorts
Sponsor – Seasogs (Spirit)
Manager – Killian Walsh
Captain – Donagh Flynn ST
Key players – Jukka Nyborg (PIS) MC, Shaun Donnelly DC, Donagh Flynn ST
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 2nd Cup semi-final, 93-94 League 14th Cup 1st round, 92-93 League 3rd Cup winners
Prospects – Town until a few years ago were unable to match the success of neighbours Dynamos, but then came Seasogs and Charmunnry football's axis of power shifted away from the capital. Only the 93-94 season that saw Town finish bottom and Polarian manager Maarten Berg lose his job since has been a poor one for Town, with the Mairéads having gone on to establish themselves as one of the top sides in the country. Former Downcurront Thistles manager Kilian Walsh has come in and steadied the ship with a runners-up finish last season, and the aim this season is certainly for Town to reclaim the title.

Image
Caernankry City
Nickname – the Miners, City
Ground - Lackenry Road, Caernankry (4,500)
KitClaret and yellow checks & sky blue trim, claret shorts
Sponsor – Claybanks Mining Company (Mine operator)
Manager – Cormac de Búrca
Captain – Rowan Doyle LW
Key players – Derek Crawford RW, Enda Hughes MC, Aidan Thompson DC
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 13th Cup runners-up, 93-94 League 12th Cup winners, 92-93 League 6th Cup 1st round
Prospects – A tough, gritty [insert working class clichés here] place, Caernankry's passion is a side that has always been thereabouts, but never there. Knock-out football is their forte having won the Challenge Cup three times, but never having finished higher than third in the league. Recent seasons have seen them accentuate they specialism as a cup team to the point where they appear to no longer try to hard in the league. The last two seasons have seen them finish outside the top ten.

Key players – Eamann Cullen DC, Aodhan Ó Cathasaigh ST, Grania Brady RW
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 5th Cup semi-final, 93-94 League 13th Cup semi-final, 92-93 League 9th Cup runners-up
Prospects – Something of a lovechild between former Candelarisarian club Port of Clotaire and former Sorthern club St. Patrick's, Clotairiens spiritual home is somewhere between Clotaire, Candelaria And Marquez and Little Clotaire, Sorthern Northland. Being made up from a cross-section of society from two nations which no longer actively participate in global football seemingly isn't the way to success if Clotairiens' middling performances thus far are anything to go by. They are however good for a cup run, having reached at least the semi-finals in each of the last three seasons.

Ground – Free Stone Stadium, Drayfill, Aels (19,000)
KitGreen and gold halves, gold shorts
Sponsor – ChocoMilk (Flavoured drinks)
Manager – Evan Walters (AEL)
Captain – Matthew Ellis (AEL) LB
Key players – Killian Daly ST, Matthew Ellis (AEL) LB, Geraint Woosnam (AEL) MC
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 7th Cup quarter-final, 93-94 League 1st Cup 2nd round, 92-93 League 7th Cup 1st round
Prospects – Natives of Aels, the former Drayfill City haven't exactly had a huge since switching leagues. The 1093-94 season however saw a surprise upturn in their fortunes as they became one of what is probably an elite club of teams to have won the domestic league of more than one country. A 7th place finish last season however suggests a return to mid-table mediocrity for the Exiles.

KitGreen to purple gradient, purple shorts
Sponsor – Vidaak (Vodka)

Captain – Finn Brady MC
Key players – Breada Duffy RB, Eoghan Connolly LW, Finn Brady MC
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 8th Cup 2nd round, 93-94 League 6th Cup semi-final, 92-93 League 2nd Cup quarter-final
Prospects – Two consecutive top half finishes in the 92-93 and 93-94 seasons, including finishing as runners-up in the former were a high point in the Thistles history. Such to the point that it led to manager Killian Walsh being poached by Ballymairead Town. Whilst retaining a trio of Charmunnry internationals will have helped the case, much more than an 8th place finish for new manager Alfie O'Neill in his début season couldn't be asked. The challenge for him now is to improve on that.

Goidelic
Nickname – the Gaels, the Hoops
GroundParadise, Ballyfeeaknock (8,000)

Sponsor – Loftus (Telecommunications)
Manager – Fearghus de Búrca
Captain – Huw Tegg DC
Key players – Kieran McDonnell LW, Thomas Hunt (VLD) ST, Aodhan Sheehan (MC)
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 1st Cup quarter-final, 93-94 League 3rd Cup quarter-final, 92-93 League 1st Cup 2nd round
Prospects – Though Goidelic remain by far the most successful and biggest club in the country they are not the dominant force they once were. It is eight years since they retained a championship, though in the past twelve seasons they've finished outside the top three just once. Whilst the odds on retaining their league crown might be longer than usual, those putting money on a top three finish cannot expect much of a return in their winnings. Particular excitement for Goidelic this season comes in the signing of Taeshani prodigy Tyler Pantoum.

Last three seasons – 94-95 League 14th Cup 1st round, 93-94 11th Cup 2nd round, 92-93 League 14th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – Bottom twice in the last three season and not once past the second round of the cup they don't come much smaller than H.Ó.C.P. Inaugural winners of the Challenge Cup they have had their day in the sun and are recognised as a decent breeding ground for young talents, but by and large they know their place in the world and are content with it. The reality is that as long as their prevent the bored island youth from roaming the land tipping over cows and hanging around menacingly on gravel track corners they have achieved their aims.

Kumquat Orchard
Nickname – the Orchard
Ground - An Úlloird, Mullendroghed (2,500)

Sponsor - Millbridge Distillery (Distillery)
Manager – Ciarán Mac Giolla Phádraig
Captain – Rónán Ó Cathasaigh GK
Key players - Rónán Ó Cathasaigh GK, Barry Scott DC, Barry McDonnell ML
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 12th Cup quarter-final, 93-94 League 10th Cup quarter-final, 92-93 League 13th Cup semi-final
Prospects – Another of the smaller teams in the nation. The Orchard though are generally liked for their quintessential name. Like H.Ó.C.P. they won't be expected to finish far above the bottom, anything above double figures will certainly be rocking the boat big time. They have however in recent years shown a tendency for something of a cup run.

Image
Rimsyleanus Red Star
Nickname – Red Star
Ground – May Day Park, Rimsyleanus (2,700)
KitRed and gold hoops with blue trim, red shorts
Sponsor – Dennevan (Supermarket chain)
Manager – Éibhear Mac Dónaill
Captain – Ardghal Mac Dónaill DC
Key players – Ivar Walsh LB, Kilian Boyle LM, Aodan McGrath GK
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 3rd Cup quarter-final, 93-94 League 8th Cup runners-up, 92-93 League 10th Cup 1st round
Prospects – Typically a lower mid-table side Red Star caused something of a surprise last season by finishing in third place and claiming a Globe Cup place. The less said about that subsequent adventure the better, but having such a taste of such high life those in Rimsyleanus will be looking for more. Whether they're actually capable of repeating such a high finish remains to be seen though.

Image
Rushmore Athletic
Nickname – the Yewmen, the Lactics
Ground – Yew Park, Rushmore (4,000)
KitPink and brown hoops, brown shorts
Sponsor – Roger's Shrubberies (Garden design)
Manager – Ossian Magee
Captain – Conor Sweeney MC
Key players – Tiernan Mullen DC, Conor Sweeney MC, Fionnuala Mhic Domhnaill RB
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 9th Cup 2nd round, 93-94 League 5th Cup 2nd round, 92-93 League 8th Cup quarter-final
Prospects – Rushmore Athletic have typically been lauded as a team who've always done decently enough on a modest budget and without star names. It is both their strong and weak points as recent seasons have seen them treading water in the league, whilst a lack of significant cup exploits mean they amble along somewhat anonymously.

Key players – Patrick O'Donnell DC, Dai Edmunds (AEL) ST, Teague Donnelly RW
Last three seasons – 94-95 League 10th Cup 2nd round, 93-94 League 2nd Cup 2nd round, 92-93 League 4th Cup quarter-final
Prospects – With two league titles and two Challenge Cups to their name Seersha County know how to win. A further six top-three positions show they also know how to compete. A runners-up finish in the 93-94 season remains the most recent highlight for County. 10th place last season however was a significant let down and one that cost the likeable Neil MacNamara his job as manager. Former assistant Cormac O'Reilly takes over the reigns.

Manager - Tiarnán Ó Beolláin

Last three seasons – 94-95 League 6th Cup 1st round, 93-94 League 7th Cup 1st round, 92-93 League 11th Cup semi-final
Prospects – Saturday 19th May 1089. It was supposed to be a turning point in Charmunnry football. Fresh from the collapse of Sorthern Northland and the subsequent mass exodus to Ancharmunn and built on a side who had won two World Cups just years before, Sorthern Rovers swept to a league and cup double, ending a run of six straight league titles for Goidelic. The Sortherners were supposed to take their place, that title was set to mark the start of a similar period of domination. It didn't though. They've not since finished in the top half of the league. A side built on a generation of players who won World Cups shouldn't have performed to the levels that Rovers have in recent years. The most popular theory for such under-performance has been the affect the collapse of Sorthern Northland may have had on previously world class players. That generation are largely retiring though and with a new generation less disturbed by the horrors of the civil war perhaps the Sortherners star is set to rise again. The appointment of Tiarnán Ó Beolláin as manager however does little to inspire confidence after his shoddy handling of managing the Charmunnry national side.

Celtic Union Baseball League

Baseball is a developing sport in both Aels and Ancharmunn, and although sport is usually devolved to both nations, the baseball authorities in both countries agreed to join forces a number of years ago to form a national Tynealan baseball league. Based on this agreement, Aels and Ancharmunn participate internationally (and be represented internationally) as Tyneala (TYL).

Year 1095 season

There are 22 teams in Celtic Union League Baseball (CULB), made up of six Charmunnry and 16 Aelsh teams. The six Charmunnry teams play in a single division with the designated hitter rule; the 16 Aelsh teams are split geographically into the Western (5), Central (6) and Eastern (5) Divisions and play without the DH. There is no inter-league play until the playoff final, known as the Tyneala Championship.

All-Star Game: Aels National First League 5-9-0 @ Ancharmunn National Series 6-9-2
The Aels League returned to All-Star losing ways as six runs in the three middle innings were enough to help the Ancharmunn Series team stage a comeback from 5–0 down.

Defending champions Garramairead Eagles won the regular season Charmunnry title by just one game after going 98–64, with the Freeport Dockers improving from .568 last season to go 97–65 (.599).

In Aels, the Longhoughster Stallions recorded their first losing season since joining the league as an expansion team in 1093 and winning it all, going 66–96. The Imeall an Uisce Spearfish won a second division title in a row, the Plaidstone Blackadders (95–67) won the Central, and the Ulverster Tarpons finished just one game worse than last season to win the East again with Llanislwyn taking the wildcard.

PLAYOFFS
First Round
Series: Ballyfeeaknock Railwaymen (4) v. Garramairead Eagles (1) 4–3
Series: Porthmageed Trawlers (3) v. Freeport Dockers (2) 4–3
Series: Llanislwyn Islanders v. Imeall an Uisce 4–2
Series: Ulverster Tarpons v. Plaidstone Blackadders 4–3

National Championships
Series: Porthmageed Trawlers v. Ballyfeeaknock Railwaymen 2–4 (Railwaymen are new Charmunnry champions)
Series: Llanislwyn Islanders v. Ulverster Tarpons 1–4 (Tarpons are new Aelsh champions)

Tyneala Championship
Ballyfeeaknock Railwaymen defeat Ulverster Tarpons four games to two

For the second year running no hitter reached the 50 homerun mark, with Craig Litchfield (Imeall an Uisce) the closest at 48. Four pitchers recorded at least 20 wins, with Garramairead's Nathan Woolescroft leading the way with 24 wins, a performance which won him a second straight 60Ft6In Award.

Awards:
Welcome to the Big Leagues Award (Rookie of the year):
ANC: Oliver Flynn (Porthmageed) .290/.340/.478
AEL: Alistair Colby (Caerfremin) .278/.348/.505

AEL: Craig Litchfield (Imeall an Uisce) .315/.453/.610

Offseason
Over the winter a re-alignment took place in the Aelsh league, with the addition of a fourth division. Each division would now consist of four teams each, with the wildcard slot being withdrawn. The divisions were restyled as the Border and Isles Division; the Central North Division; and the Central South Division; while the Eastern Division remains unchanged.

Additionally, Treuddyn Riflemen were moved from the National Second League into the First League Border and Isles Division, with the Caerfremin Sharks – which had the league's worst record - being "relegated" into the Second League.

Year 1096 season

There are 22 teams in Celtic Union League Baseball (CULB), made up of six Charmunnry and 16 Aelsh teams. The six Charmunnry teams play in a single division with the designated hitter rule; the 16 Aelsh teams are split geographically into four divisions of four and play without the DH. There is no inter-league play until the playoff final, known as the Tyneala Championship.

All-Star Game: Aels National First League 0-6-1 @ Ancharmunn National Series 7-8-0
The Aels League were shut out as the All-Star Game was played with the DH for the second year running as the Charmunnry retained the traditional midseason exhibition title.

In Ancharmunn, Porthmageed Trawlers conquered all before them as they finished an astounding 27 games clear of second placed Ballylahun, with only those two teams finishing with winning seasons. The Trawlers' 110–52 record led the CULB, ten games ahead of Fishwick Rangers and Aberwood Soldiermen, who won the Aelsh Central North and Central South titles respectively.

The pitching strikeout record fell this season, with the Blizzards' Francis Gair recording 296 Ks, four short of the magical 300.

1095-96 Charmunnry football season

Now into its third decade, organised football within Ancharmunn continues to grow at a steady, though slow, pace. Growth has however stalled somewhat in recent years, as exemplified by near neighbours Ossidiacqua having overtaken and remained ahead of Ancharmunn in the UICA coefficients. It is at least still above the Aelsh league. There are two main competitions in the country, the fourteen team National Soccer League and the All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup which sees thirty-two teams competing on a knockout basis. Whilst a Junior League, split into two regional divisions, exists below the NSL it is essentially a glorified Sunday League and no movement between the NSL and Junior League occurs. Junior League members do however participate in the Challenge Cup.

During its existence Charmunnry football has been largely amateur, however the influx in recent years of Sorthern immigration to the country has bought a degree of professionalism to the sport. As a result of this Charmunnry football has begun participating on a worldwide and regional scale by joining UICA and regional competitions. With five years of UICA experience foreign clubs visiting Ancharmunn for competitive matches is becoming a more regular occurrence. Goidelic's appearance in last season's Globe Cup group stages was a first for a Charmunnry club, and for now remains the height of ambition for the nation's teams in UICA football.

Tyneala Championship

The Tyneala Championship has firmly become an established part of Pentref-ar-y-Bae's pre-season schedule with this being their fourth participation in a row in the season opener, and their second against Goidelic. Pentref-ar-y-Bae needed extra-time to take the title in the meeting between the two sides in 1093, though this match lasted just the ninety minutes. Once again it was won by a single goal margin, though in a reverse of the meeting between the two it was the Charmunnry side who took the Championship.

Pentref-ar-y-Bae 0–1 Goidelic

National Soccer League

Though a while since they last retained a title, Goidelic's success won't be much of a surprise. However those in the positions immediately below won't have been predicted by too many. Red Star's profile has been on the rise over the last couple of years through their UICA participations and they look to be making good use of that as they've gone on to secure a second successive top three finish. If they retain their rate of progression into next season the only way is to the title. Dynamos meanwhile have become an established presence in and around the top of the table, though usually below their Town neighbours. Another poor season for Tow however sees Dynamos take the local bragging rights and a good amount of debate over just who the bigger team in Ballymairead is now. Though some way behind the champions Atlético Cabañas's return to the top end of the table brings about memories of the early days of Charmunnry football when they were a major force in the game. Their fourth place finish also brings about the bonus of an eagerly awaited début campaign. The biggest surprise though lies in Kumquat Orchard's fifth place finish, an achievement that quite comfortably ranks as the Orchard's best league performance.

All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup

History was made in this season's Challenge Cup final as Goidelic secured the third and final piece of a first ever Charmunnry treble of Championship, League and Cup. In truth the first third of that triumvirate won't be particularly recalled in years to come. The league and cup double however marks a first such achievement since Sorthern Rovers' double of 1088-89. With a winning margin of at least two goals in every round Goidelic weren't particularly troubled, though their run included the defending champions Ballymairead Dynamos. The quarter-final encounter against Downcurron Thistles did eventually see Goidelic score seven, though in the drawn opening ninety minutes the Thistle did seriously test their more illustrious opponents. Whilst the tournament will be remembered as Goidelic's some credit should also go to Rushmore Athletic for whom reaching the final was a first.

Not unlike its counterpart in Ancharmunn, Aelsh football has largely been semi-professional through its 25-year history. Although the league is older than the Charmunnry counterpart by 5 years, Aelsh football remains largely low key, and the country continues to not maintain a national team. Subpar performances by Aelsh clubs at UICA level continue to disappoint fans, a large majority of whom are still unwilling to spend significant amounts of money to support their clubs.

To correct this, the FCA, in conjunction with the Drayfill City Council, built a new 32,000-seater New Free Stone national stadium, currently used to host all major finals, as well as matches for Drayfill Town. From this season on all teams in the top flight were made to play in stadia of at least 6,000 capacity; teams were allowed to groundshare in lieu of building new stadia.

Drayfill City (now Dinas Drefhil) played in the league until 1074/5 before moving to the Charmunnry league system. The FCA are the governing authority for that club, who play in the Ancharmunn league and cup system, but an agreement with Ancharmunn means Drayfill City may only be nominated for international competition by Ancharmunn.

Premier League teams went to a two-home, two-away format for the first time for a total of 36 games each, while the Second League remained unchanged with teams playing each other three times. A one-down, one-up direct promotion and relegation system remains in use, though for the first time this year a four-team playoff league was introduced involving the ninth placed team in the Premier League and the second to fourth placed teams in the Second League.

Before the season began, title holders Pentref-ar-y-Bae hosted the traditional preseason Tyneala Championship, but lost the national title after a single-goal loss to Goidelic.

Pentref-ar-y-Bae once again successfully defended their title, doing so for the fourth time to become the first team to win five league titles in the country. The league win sees them overtake Drayfill City, who only recorded four league wins before leaving the league. Second and third places were also unchanged from last season, while CCPD Penfro and Doversham Rovers swapped finishing positions. Imeall an Uisce also maintained their sixth place from last season while newly promoted Capital AFC (CCPD Brifddinas) placed a respectable seventh. Trechoid AFC United, who finished ninth last year, failed to improve and finished in the automatic relegation spot, while Trechoid FC finished in the playoff spot.

It was a similar story at the top of the second league as last season's second and third placed teams both went one better and finished at the top of the pile again, with Penfro Irish earning their first return to the top flight in a decade since their relegation in the strike-shortened 1085/86 season. Aels Welsh finished second to qualify for a playoff spot, while amateur team Moulton Seasiders, in only their second season in the league, stunned the nation to finish third. Fellow "expansion team" Spitalford Town finished fourth to take the final playoff spot, while relegated Trechoid Wanderers could only finish seventh.

The playoff was a double round robin between Trechoid FC, Aels Welsh, Moulton Seasiders and Spitalford Town. The amateurs' standard finally showed as they failed to score a single goal in their six games (though they conceded just five), finishing last. At the top both Trechoid and the Welsh finished even on ten points with Trechoid finishing top — and retaining their Premier League status — on head-to-head record.

Tynealan Twenty20 Championship, 1095
There are three divisions of eight teams each in the National T20 Championship, made up of 21 Aelsh teams and three Charmunnry sides (Ballyfeeaknock, Freeport and North-Eastern Counties). Two teams are promoted/relegated at the end of each season between the divisions. Nine points for a win, four for a draw or tie, one for a loss. At the end of the T20 season, the top three Division One teams, in addition to two All-Star Selects from Divisions Two and Three and one such team drawn from the rest of Division One, take part in the eight-team TynealAir50 All-Star Cricket Championship.

I'm not on the Greenwich Meridian so my time is a few seconds behind. Bear that in mind.

Tynealan Rugby League

Despite league being the more popular of the two codes in Ancharmunn the Tynealan Super League's organising company managed to fall into a bankruptcy that saw the 1093 season cancelled. It did however return and the tables of the 1094 and 1095 seasons can be seen in spoilers to catch up.

1096 Tynealan rugby league season

The major talking point for the 1096 season was the introduction of a Province of Origin series. The two main rugby league playing provinces of Machairster and Slievester compete against each other in three matches across the season with the winning province being the one which wins the higher number of matches. Seen as a form of representative football second only to the Rugby League World Cup eligibility for the sides is based upon where a player starts his career. For example a player born in Machairster will not be eligible for his province of birth but for Slievester should he start his professional rugby league career in Slievester. Similarly foreign born players can be play for one of the two provinces should they start their professional career at a club in one of the two provinces.

1096 Tynealan Unification League

The Tynealan Unification League is the top level of rugby union competition in the Celtic Union of Tyneala (ie: Aels and Ancharmunn). As the only four professional rugby union clubs in Ancharmunn the provincial sides of Dyary, Machairster and Slievester along with the side representing the capital city Ballyfeeaknock will remain constants in the league. The two lowest placed Aelsh sides however are relegated to the Aelsh Rugby Union Premier League. At the top end of the table the top three clubs qualify for the championship playoffs, with the first placed team qualifying directly for the final and having home advantage for that match. The second placed team hosts the third placed team in the semi-final with the winner progressing to the final.

Year 1097 season

All-Star Game: Ancharmunn National Series 3–10–0 @ Aels National First League 5–8–1
The Aelsh league, perhaps taking advantage of the lack of a DH for the first time in three years, shut out the Charmunnry through seven innings before a late rally made things interesting. Leo Surtees hit the decisive three-run homerun in the seventh for the hosts and was named MVP for his efforts.

In Ancharmunn, Porthmageed Trawlers conquered all before them for a second straight season as they finished 15 games clear of second placed Owentalaff, though this year at least four teams finished with winning seasons. The Trawlers' 101–61 record led the CULB, five games ahead of the Ulverster Tarpons.

PLAYOFFS
First Round series:
ANC: Ballylahun Blizzards (4) 2 Porthmageed Trawlers (1) 4

AEL: Penfro Mortars (2) 4 Drayfill Steelhounds (4) 1 – Mortars retain the Aelsh championship

Tyneala Championship
Garramairead Eagles sweep Penfro Mortars four games to none (second title for Garramairead)

Again no hitter reached the 50 homerun mark, with Joseph Lipton (Garramairead) the closest at 45. Four pitchers recorded at least 20 wins, led by Rubén López (Porthmageed) and Kiyo Kimura (Penfro) who each had 22. The pitching strikeout all-time best mark (296) was not threatened this year, with the best strikeout pitcher falling 30 Ks short.

1096-97 Charmunnry football season

Now into its third decade, organised football within Ancharmunn continues to grow at a steady, though slow, pace, some cynics however have lately suggested that it is stalling. A sense of regional pride comes with the fact that UICA rates the Ossidiacquan and Aelsh league below Ancharmunn's.

Tyneala Championship

For the third time in four years Pentref-ar-y-Bae and Goidelic met to get the Tynealan seasons underway. Typically matches between the two have been tight, with one goal having separated the two sides in the previous meetings. Whilst the quality between the two sides clearly remains similar it was the Aelshmen who were better on the day this time, with their two nil win being a deserved, though not comprehensive result.

Goidelic 0–2 Pentref-ar-y-Bae

National Soccer League

A quick glance at the final table would suggest a tight title race that went right to the wire. Whilst the gap of just three points between the top three finishers is unusual there was no last day drama with Dynamos able to field a weakened team in the season closer against Dinas Drefhil having ended the penultimate weekend five points ahead of Red Star. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the season however lies in the dead head between Goidelic and Sortherners. Even results in the two derbies couldn't separate the teams with a 2-0 win for Goidelic in the first meeting and a 3-1 Sortherners win in the return leg making for equal records. Whilst just outside of the UICA places given for league performance the need to split the two side should the Challenge Cup be won by one of the top three finishers and the Cup's Globe Cup place handed over to the fourth placed team in the league.

All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup

The All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup this season was a smaller affair than it has been for some years following the government led split of Charmunnry football and the control of senior football competitions being handed to the National Soccer Board. With the Junior League keeping itself affiliated to the Cumann Sacair an Tearmann the Challenge Cup is now almost exclusively a NSL affair. Given Civil Service's connections to the government they are the only Junior League club to have joined up to the NSB, whilst Corín Teánns are an amateur club formed by former Junior League players frustrated enough with the CST's management of the game in recent years to have defected away. Rather handily they also bring the number of Challenge Cup entrants up to sixteen.

Not unlike its counterpart in Ancharmunn, Aelsh football has largely been semi-professional through its nearly-thirty-year history. Although the league is older than the Charmunnry counterpart by 5 years, Aelsh football remains largely low key, and the country continues to not maintain a national team. Subpar performances by Aelsh clubs at UICA level continue to disappoint fans, a significant minority of whom are still unwilling to spend significant amounts of money to support their clubs.

Premier League teams remained on a two-home, two-away format for a total of 36 games each, while the Second League saw teams playing each other three times. A one-down, one-up direct promotion and relegation system was unchanged, though this year's relegation/promotion playoff was reduced to three teams as surprise package Caerfremin Sundays wanted to remain amateur and was thus ineligible for promotion to the top flight. Moulton Seasiders, last year's surprise package, turned semi-professional before the season started and were thus extended an invitation to join the National Reserve League.

Before the season began, title holders Pentref-ar-y-Bae once again took part in the traditional preseason Tyneala Championship, and regained the national title after defeating hosts Goidelic 2–0.

Pentref-ar-y-Bae's seemingly unstoppable run of five league wins in a row came to a shuddering halt as they were outplayed by three teams this year and could only finish fourth, behind third placed Drayfill Town on head-to-head. CCPD Penfro won their first championship, having been the bridesmaids twice previously, five points clear of second placed Doverston. Newly promoted Penfro Irish finished eighth, four points clear of the relegation playoff position which went to Doversham County. In the largest controversy of the year, Trechoid FC fielded two unregistered reserve players in their first-team match against Penfro Irish, resulting in the strugglers being hit with a five-point penalty and all but ensuring their relegation with matches to spare.

At the top of the second league, last season's second placed team went one better and finished at the top of the pile, earning their first return to the top flight since they were relegated 18 years ago. Moulton Seasiders showed that their performance last year was not a one-off by finishing in the playoffs again, while former fellow amateur side Caerfremin Sundays were this year's surprise package, finishing third but turning down the promotion playoff position to maintain their amateur status.

1097 Tynealan Unification League

1097 Tynealan rugby league season

As not just the defending Super League champions but also the reigning world club champions Caernankry Miners Welfare would have gone into the season fully expecting to be erected onto a pedestal with their various opponents looking to shoot them down. A woeful start to the season saw it look as though just that would happen. As is the mark of champions however Caernankry managed to click into gear and find form at just the right time to squeeze into the playoffs on the final day of the season, the first time all year that they got into the top four.

Once there it was something of an inevitability that the Miners would go on to secure a second successive Super League crown, that not without some luck with Ballyfeeaknock Northern mystifying kicking for goal rather than going for a try. In a game decided by a single point that proved to be a fatal error.

Key players - Mutimir Jozić (PAS) MC, Cináed Mac Dónaill DC, Tighearnán Ó Brosnacháin ST
Last three seasons – 1096-97 League 11th Cup quarter-final, 1095-96 League 4th Cup 1st round,1094-95 League 11th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – Famed for their policy of signing only so called 'Cabañas effect' players – that is players whose names feature diacritics – Atlético used the mythical power of Cabañas effect to good effect in the early years of the National Soccer League by winning three of the first four seasons. Since then however they have endured leaner times, not finishing in the top three between 1086 and 1096. Last season saw a failure to build upon their 1096 success and so a close season change see Atlético changing to the leadership of Saugeian treble winner François Doré.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 1st Cup 1st round, 95-96 League 3rd Cup 2nd round, 94-95 League 4th Cup winners
Prospects – The success in recent seasons of Ballymairead Town with Dynamos hot on their heels has seen the Ballymairead rivalry grow to perhaps be bigger than any of the Ballyfeeaknock derbies. For much of the time however Dynamos had played second fiddle. A first ever league success last season however see Dynamos now the team to beat. Expectations have further been heightened by the poaching by Dynamos of Shaun Donnelly and Donagh Flynn, previously two of Town's bigger name players. Not only should it increase Dynamos chances of defending the title, it should add further intensity to the rivalry within the town.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 6th Cup winners, 95-96 League 11th Cup 1st round, 94-95 League 2nd Cup semi-final
Prospects – The last few years have been painful ones for Town. A league placing of 11th in 95-96 was embarrassing and though last season's 6th place was a reasonable recovery of the ship it was was from the heights that the Sacrificers have got used to. Victory in cup competition did at least bring in some silverware. Further misery could be in sight for Town however with the local council having served notice on the club to kick them out of their much loved Old Chicken Ranch home in which many perceive as an attempt by the authorities for find a use for the Cup of Harmony 52 white elephant of Páirc Mairéad. All that's before taking into account the schenanigans of Dynamos as well.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 13th Cup semi-finals, 95-96 League 14th Cup quater-finals, 94-95 League 13th Cup runners-up
Prospects – Caernankry City's strength has always been in cup football rather than the week to week trial of league competition. Nonetheless their form over the last two seasons will have no doubt raised large measures of concern in the mining stronghold. A bottom place finish in 95/96 was the nadir, but City have no finished outside the top ten in each of the last four seasons. Under a new, novice manager their best chance of success again looks to lie in knock-out football.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 3rd Cup quarter-finals, 95-96 League 9th Cup 1st round, 94-95 League 5th Cup semi-final
Prospects – Something of a lovechild between former Candelarisarian club Port of Clotaire and former Sorthern club St. Patrick's, Clotairiens spiritual home is somewhere between Clotaire, Candelaria And Marquez and Little Clotaire, Sorthern Northland. Being made up from a cross-section of society from two nations which no longer actively participate in global football has rarely proved to be the path to success with a third place finish and UICA qualification last season being an exception. A few places lower this season would surprise no-one, though most will still be reckoning on Clotairiens to make it into the top third of the table.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 7th Cup Quarter-finals, 95-96 8th Cup 1st round, 94-95 League 7th Cup quarter-final
Prospects – Natives of Aels, the former Drayfill City haven't exactly had a huge since switching leagues. The Exiles are consistent to the point of comforting familiarity, rather like a nice warn mug of hot chocolate (ChocoMilk naturally) in the evening, a nice warm blanket or the rising sun. So entrenched are the club halfway down the table that Dinas Drefhil and mid-table mediocrity may well be synonyms.

Last three seasons – 96-96 League 14th Cup 1st round, 95-96 League 12th Cup quarter-finals, 94-95 League 8th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – The early part of the decade saw the Thistle briefly among the elite, even going as far as a runners-up finish in 1093. That saw then manager move on to Ballymairead Town and since then it's been downhill for the club to the point of finishing bottom last season. Thistle still retain some good players with a duo of Charmunnry internationals at the club, but pessimism has set in with another lowly finish to be expected.

Last three seasons – 96-97 4th Cup Semi-finals, 95-96 1st Cup winners, 94-95 League 1st Cup quarter-final
Prospects – Following consecutive titles it looked as though Goidelic were again on their way to a string of championships. However a fourth place finish was their first outside of the top three for some time. Over the years Goidelic have proved that they should never be written of. A wounded beast can be a fearsome beast, and for that reason many see the Hoops returning with a vengence.

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 12th Cup runners-up, 95-96 League 13th Cup semi-finals, 94-95 League 14th Cup 1st round
Prospects – With a policy of fielding mainly local youngsters H.Ó.C.P. Don't trouble the upper echelons of football too much. The last couple of seasons have seen steady progress upwards with 14th, 13th and then 12th placed finishes over the course of the last three seasons. In addition to that has been a cup semi-final in 95-96 and a beaten day out in Ballyfeeaknock in last season's final. That sequence suggests 11th a second ever Cup victory.

Kumquat Orchard
Nickname – the Orchard

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 10th 1st round, 95-96 League 5th Cup Semi-finals, 94-95 League 12th Cup quarter-finals
Prospects – Another of the smaller teams in the nation. The Orchard though are generally liked for their quintessential name. Their best ever season came with a 5th placed finish in 95-96, however in some ways it proved to be too successful. Their squad was largely broken up and given the circumstances a 10th place finish last season was quite decent. A similar position is likely this season.

KitRed and gold hoops with blue trim, red shorts
Sponsor – Dennevan (Supermarket chain)

Last three seasons – 96-97 League 2nd Cup quarter-final, 95-96 League 2nd Cup 2nd round, 94-95 League 3rd Cup quarter-final
Prospects – Whilst Red Star had typically been a bottom half side the last three seasons, partly with the help of sponsorship from Dennevan, have seen them challening for the title with consecutive top three finishes. They've finished runners-up in both the most recent seasons and the next breakthrough looks to be claiming top spot.

Rushmore Athletic
Nickname – the Yewmen, the Lactics
Ground – Yew Park, Rushmore (4,000)
KitPink and brown hoops, brown shorts
Sponsor – Roger's Shrubberies (Garden design)
Manager – Shane Boyle
Captain – Conor Sweeney MC
Key players – Brendan O'Mahoney ML, Conor Sweeney MC, Fionnuala Mhic Domhnaill RB
Last three seasons – 96-97 League 9th Cup 1st round, 95-96 League 6th Cup runners-up, 94-95 League 9th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – Rushmore Athletic have typically been lauded as a team who've always done decently enough on a modest budget and without star names. It is both their strong and weak points as recent seasons have seen them treading water in the league, whilst a lack of significant cup exploits mean they amble along somewhat anonymously.

Image
Seersha County
Nickname – the Freemen, County
Ground – Derghown, Sayercooan (3,000)
KitGreen with blue chevron, blue shorts
Sponsor – Free Port Authority (Port operator)
Manager – Cormac O'Reilly
Captain – Davie Hartley MC
Key players – Davie Hartley MC, Dai Edmunds (AEL) ST, Teague Donnelly RW
Last three seasons – 96-97 League 8th Cup 1st round, 95-96 League 7th Cup 2nd round, 94-95 League 10th Cup 2nd round
Prospects – With two league titles and two Challenge Cups to their name Seersha County were among those to enjoy success in the NSL's early years. A further six top-three positions show they also know how to compete. A runners-up finish in the 93-94 season remains the most recent highlight for County. Those all just memories now however and Seersha have spent the past couple of seasons middling in mid-table under Cormac O'Reilly, a trend that looks likely to continue.

Nickname – Sortherners, the Snorths, the Donkeys
Ground – The Sorthern Grounds, Ballyfeeaknock (7,000)

Sponsor – Stl-Blnd (Soft drink)
Manager - Tiarnán Ó Beolláin
Captain – Lonan Kenny GK
Key players – Shaun O'Rourke MC, Lonan Kenny GK, Donal Whelan ST
Last three seasons – 96-97 League 4th Cup 1st round, 95-96 League 10th Cup quarter-finals, 94-95 League 6th Cup 1st round
Until last season they hadn't since competed at the top end of the table. An equal fourth place finish under former Ancharmunn manager Tiarnán Ó Beolláín mixed with a fresh generation of players would suggest a bright future for the club.

1097-98 Charmunnry football season

Now into its third decade, organised football within Ancharmunn continues to grow at a steady, though slow, pace, some cynics however have lately suggested that it is stalling. As far as regional pride goes the NSL remains ranked above the Aelsh league by UICA, Ossidiacqua's league though has marginal bragging rights, for now. There are two main competitions in the country, the fourteen team National Soccer League and the All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup. There is also a Junior League, split into two regional divisions, exists below the NSL it is essentially a glorified Sunday League and no movement between the NSL and Junior League occurs. Junior League members previously participated in the All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup, however the bodies running the NSL and the Junior League are currently in a split which sees each side claiming to be the legitimate governing body of football in Ancharmunn.

Tyneala Championship

Pentref-ar-y-Bae's run of dominance in Aels was such that this was the first Tyneala Championship since 1091 that they weren't involved in. On that occasion Doversham County defeated Ballymairead Town. This time it was Ballymairead Dynamos representing Ancharmunn, and like their neighbours losing. CCPD Penfro's 4-1 victory at their David Strangford Community Stadium marks the biggest ever win in Championship history.

CCPD Penfro 4–1 Ballymairead Dynamos

National Soccer League

Having finished either second or third in each of the previous three seasons Red Star went into the season tipped by many to win the title. Just one in their opening three games may have dampened some early season enthusiasm but the truth was simply that rather than peaking too early they built themselves up in championship winning. They dominated the second half of the season topping it right from going top after matchday 14 and keeping ahead of the challenging Rushmore Athletic and Sortherners sides. In fact the run in proved to be something of an anti-climax with there being no change in the top three following matchday 19. That weekend saw Goidelic lose 3-2 away to Downcurron Thistles and with it their chances of regaining the title vanish. Both Ballymairead sides endured troublesome seasons with the background drama of their future at the Old Chicken Ranch proving to be a distraction from on pitch matters. Even so, Dynamos 11th place finish was well below what such a talented squad should have achieved.

All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup

The ongoing rift between the two governing bodies in Ancharmunn once again sees a reduced All-Ancharmunn Challenge Cup. Defending champions Ballymairead Town quickly passed the trophy onto new guardians by going down 3-1 to Clotariens in the first round. The early entertainment though came courtesy of Goidelic and Dinas Drefhil with the Aelsh side coming through with the odd goal in nine. An eight goal semi-final between Rushmore Athletic and H.Ó.C.P. was perhaps the next notable match. It would also be the semi-final from which the Cup winner from, with Rushmore Athletic needing a penalty shootout to keep the trophy in Ancharmunn. Having also finished second in the league the Cup win capped off what was a fantastic season for the Yewmen.

Not unlike its counterpart in Ancharmunn, Aelsh football has largely been semi-professional through its nearly-thirty-year history. However, a recent push by the Football Commission of Aels has seen the top flight transformed into a fully professional division. However, Pentref-ar-y-Bae's run to the final of the Cygnus Cup – and eventual win – has seen renewed calls for government spending on the league.

Premier League teams remained on a two-home, two-away format for a total of 36 games each, while the Second League saw teams playing each other three times. A one-down, one-up direct promotion and relegation system was unchanged, while a promotion/relegation play-off remained in place. The team second from bottom in the Premier League in the teams finishing second, third, and fourth in the Second League take part in this play off. Caerfremin Sundays remain an amateur side, and as such are not eligible for the play-off should they qualify.

Before the season began, title holders CCPD Penfro took part in the traditional preseason Tyneala Championship, hosting the Ballymairead Dynamos, recording a 4–1 win to keep the Tynealan title in Aels.

Aels Welsh had a torrid time in their first season in the top flight, managing only 25 points and finishing bottom of the table nearly 20 points behind their closest rivals. At the top, Doverston went one better than last season to finish top of the Premier League and secure their first league title for a decade. Last season's champions, CCPD Penfro, fell one point short of retaining their title and finished second. Penfro Irish finished above the relegation play-off position again, working their second successive season in the top flight without relegation worries.

In the second league, Hilshore County finished top, continuing the trend of league runners-up winning the league the following season. In another tight finish to the division (the top seven teams were separated by just six points), Moulton Seasiders finished in a promotion play-off position for the third year running. Relegated Trechoid FC found the going tough, managing just 48 points to finish 10th.

Doversham County became the first team to be relegated through the play-off as they only managed seven points from various six games to finish third. The Seasiders, on the other hand, finally proved why they have constantly finished in the play-offs spots by winning promotion to the top flight. They are the first 'expansion' team of 1094/95 to do so, and turn fully professional as a result.

#No final was held as Drayfill City Reserves won the second semi-final. The trophy was awarded to the club by default. The third place playoff between the losing semifinalists was instead played as a second place playoff, with Penfro Irish winning.
*A non-league Select XI was invited to participate in place of Dinas Drefhil in 1079–80 and 1082–83 as Dinas Drefhil were chasing silverware in Ancharmunn and declined to participate in the FCA Trophy.
‡No third place playoff was held between 1075–76 and 1091–92, and again since 1094–95.

FCA Trophy
Dinas Drefhil continue to be excluded upon request of the club. All matches were played at pre-determined 'home' venues, with only the final played at the New Free Stone Stadium. Defending champions Pentref-ar-y-Bae made it to the semifinals, but lost to eventual champions CCPD Penfro. However, there was some good news for them, as CCPD Penfro had already qualified for the Globe Cup through the league and thus allowing them to take their place in next season's UICA Championships.

National Reserve League
The National Reserve League returned to a geographical split this season, into West and East divisions of 12 teams each (Caerfremin Sundays, as an amateur team, do not enter a side into the league). It is the first time since the 1091/92 season that the reserve league has taken a geographical split – that year the league was split north/south with eight and seven teams respectively. The overall league champion is the divisional winner with more points. If both divisional winners are tied on points, the teams will share the reserve league title.
