TSP Super 20 Rugby League (closed)

Postby Green Jello Salad » Fri Oct 19, 2012 4:53 am

(NB: Historically this was a regional sportswire for three sports. Everything not involving the rugby league has now been spoilered.)

About TSP Super 20 Rugby League

The TSP Super 20 is the premier sporting league in The Scout Promise. Founded as the Tri-Nations Rugby League by six clubs from three lands, it has expanded in recent years to include 20 sides from 12 nations. Super 20 plays rugby league, although several clubs also field separate union fifteens. Representatives of the league are invited to the RUCT Seasogs Championship notwithstanding the differences in customary code.

The founding clubs were Bountiful and Winterhaven from Green Jello Salad, Glomsteg and Pasgarmises from 84733842, and Bickerton and Hyde Park from SarahRed-n-BarryBlue.

The eighth season of Super 20 was marked by the record-setting finish of perennial power Pasgarmises. The Matimar thirteen were on a modest 26 points after 25 weeks, in ninth place and 12 points out of first. And then it began, a record streak of 13 consecutive wins with a +226 differential:

Hyde Park (SBB) 18–28 Pasgarmises (MAT)
Pasgarmises (MAT) 40–0 Alice Springs (WTZ)
Alma (HLM) 0–33 Pasgarmises (MAT)
Pasgarmises (MAT) 22–16 Bountiful (GJS)

Scottville (ROS) 17–18 Pasgarmises (MAT)
Pasgarmises (MAT) 30–12 New Zion (NDE)
Glomsteg (MAT) 10–23 Pasgarmises (MAT)

Pasgarmises finally took the lead after the New Zion win in week 37, but still needed the away win in the traditional derby with fellow founders Glomsteg on the last day to secure the championship. Both Waltzing Matilda clubs are also Seasogs-bound, with Alice Springs losing the title on differential and Woomera three points back in fourth. Gagarin-Armstrong return to the top tier for the first time in a half-dozen campaigns to round out the qualifiers.

Twenty-overs professional cricket in The Scout Promise

Ultra-Cricket, the third professional sports league to take hold across many borders in The Scout Promise, is the brainchild of Athas investment banker and cricket enthusiast A. Douglas Brock. Convinced that the establishment of limited-overs cricket, especially in the 20-overs variety, was key toward making the sport a more attractive mass-market broadcast product Brock reached out to potential backers across the region. Twenty-five markets eventually created or got behind existing local clubs, and Ultra-Cricket was born.

The standard of play is still well below that found in Test nations. But the money isn't bad, and the opportunity for local cricketers to support themselves properly will surely pay dividends to players, fans, and investors alike.

Sectional play demonstrated both the emergence of consistent high-performers and the fluidity of a young league. In the northwest Rothbardton Wednesday were the only club to repeat as Regional Banner holders. This was a good consolation for Wednesday, who after a dismal Globe Cup debut bore the distinction as the lowest-ranked club (785) in all of UICA. Bountiful swapped places with Murray Bridge in the southwest as both clubs went 1-2 in successive campaigns.

On the other hand, few indeed would have predicted the rise of Iqaluit in the northeast, rising from seventh place in their first campaign to lift the banner four points clear in their second. And fewer still, given the sporting history of both Matimar and her capital, would have marked inaugural southeast bannermen Pasgarmises for a tumble from first to last--although Oxley Vale were certainly no surprise to prevail.

Bountiful (GJS) 0–0 Iqaluit (BFI) (1–0 AET)

Cup stage -- Round #7 (Final)
Bountiful (GJS) 6–1 Rothbardton Wednesday (SMU)

Three of the four regional banners went through from their quarterfinal ties to secure UICA qualifications, with the only exception being Murray Bridge's victory on kicks from the mark over Oxley Vale. This reversed the 1-0 result from last season's quarterfinals and established the pairing as a noteworthy intersectional rivalry.

Both semifinal matches were scoreless after ninety minutes, and each was decided in extra time with one goal by the home club to put #2 seed Bountiful against #4 seed Rothbardton Wednesday for the premiership. Yet anyone expecting another tight defensive battle would lose that notion quickly in the final, as Bountiful went up 3-0 at home in the first 11 minutes and cruised to a 6-1 victory.

UICA Qualifications

Champions' Cup: Bountiful (GJS).
Globe Cup: Rothbardton Wednesday (SMU), Iqaluit (BFI), Murray Bridge (WTZ).

The story of the premiership's third season continued to be across the board at the top as four new clubs hoisted regional banners. In the first three seasons eleven different clubs of a possible twelve have won their regions.

Kimball United's triumph in the southwest by nine points over last season's premiers Bountiful was especially noteworthy. United's gaudy 0.50 goals-against average was not the league record, but it was less than half that of every other club in the region and made a great argument for those who favor defense.

A three-way battle in the northwest provided the most excitement to table-watchers. South Partridge of New Deseret eventually emerged with top honors on goal difference over Gilwell Owls after that Baden-Powell club held off but did not defeat Checkmate rivals Polgar City Monarchs in the season-ending fixture.

Independence were this season's surprise banner-bearers, nearly doubling their points from the last campaign (14 to 27) to win the northeast by five. And Blacksburg Rangers finally got their name in lights after previous second- and third-place finishes in the southeast.

Gilwell Owls (BPO) 1–0 Grotius (NTL)
Bountiful (GJS) 1–0 Mesitgrup Gomtum (MAT)
Oxley Vale (CPL) 2–2 Polgar City Monarchs (CKM) (2–2 AET) (3–4 pen.)

Cup stage -- Round #5 (Quarterfinals)
Kimball United (HLM) 1–1 Lake Calhoun (SBB) (1–3 AET)
Independence (SBB) 2–1 Gilwell Owls (BPO)
South Partridge (NDE) 0–0 Bountiful (GJS) (0–0 AET) (3–4 pen.)
Blacksburg Rangers (KAM) 0–1 Polgar City Monarchs (CKM)

Cup stage -- Round #6 (Semifinals)
Independence (SBB) 2–1 Lake Calhoun (SBB)
Bountiful (GJS) 0–3 Polgar City Monarchs (CKM)

Cup stage -- Round #7 (Final)
Independence (SBB) 0–1 Polgar City Monarchs (CKM)

To call Polgar City Monarchs unlikely champions would do injustice to a remarkably consistent club. They have, after all, put up regular-season marks of 22, 22, and 24 points and had won two-thirds of their cup ties entering this run.

And yet their run to the premiership makes quite a good story. Monarchs barely failed to win their regional banner on the final day, drawing Gilwell Owls when a win would have sent them through. The resulting third-place finish meant a six-match road to the crown instead of four.

They succeeded. Six matches, six wins, including four away ties in succession and three clean sheets in quarters, semis, and the final. After their shootout victory over Oxley Vale in the octofinal the Checkmate eleven were not to be denied.

Bountiful, the Monarchs' semifinal victims, earned a second straight trip to UICA play where they hope for a bit better luck. The Green Jello Salad squad had a 1-5-0 unbeaten run in their debut Champions' Cup and Globe Cup combined, being eliminated from both tournaments on away goals.

UICA Qualifications

Champions' Cup: Polgar City Monarchs (CKM).
Globe Cup: Independence (SBB), Bountiful (GJS), Lake Calhoun (SBB).
Series B Champions' Cup: (See below) Malaniuk Dutchmen (CKM), Cranbourne (WTZ), Samideurbo (ESP), Oxbridge (SBB).

Championship for international association football

Building on the success of the Pathfinder Technologies TSP Premiership, a second-level multinational league system has been organised incorporating eight associations participating for the first time. The Celebration Cruises Championship has 56 teams from 25 national associations, bringing the full system up to 88 teams from 27 lands.

The championship parallels the structure of its parent, with eight-team sections playing a double round-robin regular season followed by a knockout cup lasting seven rounds. But the championship knockout involves only the top two teams in each section (plus the defenders if not otherwise qualified) and uses two-legged ties at each level save the final.

The original club contracts in the TSP Premiership are for five seasons. At the end of that time some clubs will be shifted between that league and this one using a scheme not yet fully worked out.

In the first season of a new second-tier league, perhaps the only remarkable performance was that of Cranbourne in winning Section 3 by 13 points. The tightest race was between Matimar clubs Mesitgigli and Rogplel, ultimately resolved by a single net goal when they finished level on 23 points.

Semifinals, second leg
Cranbourne (WTZ) 1–0 Oxbridge (SBB) -- Cranbourne win by 3-1 aggregate
Samideurbo (ESP) 3–3 Malaniuk Dutchmen (CKM) -- Malaniuk Dutchmen win by 6-3 aggregate

Final
Cranbourne (WTZ) 0–0 Malaniuk Dutchmen (CKM) (0–0 AET) (3–4 pen.)

Checkmate completed a national double of the premiership and championship as Malaniuk Dutchmen survived a difficult first tie and a thrilling spot-kick shootout after a scoreless draw away in the final to prevail. Cranbourne from Waltzing Matilda upheld their #1 seed nicely throughout, and may somewhat righthly feel peeved about the loss of the cup in a shootout. Both clubs will be nominated to the Series B Champions' Cup, together with their semifinal victims Samideurbo and Oxbridge.

The tenth season of TSP Super 20 was dominated by two stories.

First was the return of founding club Bountiful to prominence after receiving a boost from the recent Rugby League World Cup in Green Jello Salad. Bountiful captured their first championship of the Super 20 era and earned a Seasogs invitation for the first time in six seasons.

Second was the continuing pressure during the tenth season for new national markets to receive clubs through league expansion. Adding clubs will require either lengthening the season by two matches or removing/moving an existing club for each new club. The most likely scenarios involve a combined approach, expanding to 22 teams and folding a couple of existing doormats to make room for four new clubs. Stay tuned!

Bountiful and Iqaluit became the second and third clubs to hoist a second regional banner. They were joined by third season premiers Polgar City Monarchs and Ross Island's Scottville Scouts.

Iqaluit ran away with the northeast, eventually outstripping first season premiers Cookie Cove by 9 points. In contrast, the southeast was not decided until the fourteenth round as Scottville Scouts held on to their one-point lead over Blackburg Rangers.

Monarchs played like a club determined to prove that last season's crown was no fluke, heading the northwest table from the fourth round on, And Bountiful were Bountiful.

Several clubs were playing with nervous eyes on next season as the Celebration Cruises Championship takes shape. A system of promotion and relegation is almost certain, and with so many CCC clubs to the south and east drawing balanced boundaries for new regions will be a challenge.

Baffin Island club Iqaluit followed up their dominant performance in the regular season with three one-goal victories, two in extra time, to win their first premiership and second UICA tournament qualification. Their methodical performance from the first seed was a marked contrast to the third season premiers from Polgar City who had to win six successive ties to triumph.

But losing finalists South Partridge of New Deseret have received a major consolation prize. They will also advance to the UICA Champions' Cup. An organizational review by UICA authorities in Aeropag has confirmed that the Premiership qualifies for additional slots in the UICA competitions on a basis nearer that of other long-established multi-associational leagues. The additional upside is the qualification of six clubs to the Globe Cup instead of three, welcome news indeed to all four quarterfinal losers. The new formula combined with the existing system of cup byes will assure every regional banner winner of UICA qualification. Also, the Celebration Cruises Championship sees their qualification double to eight clubs for the Series B Champions' Cup.

UICA Qualifications

Champions' Cup: Iqaluit (BFI), South Partridge (NDE).
Globe Cup: Blacksburg Rangers (KAM), Oxley Vale (CPL), Cookie Cove (GGD), Bountiful (GJS), Polgar City Monarchs (CKM), Scottville Scouts (ROS).

Championship for international association football

Building on the success of the Pathfinder Technologies TSP Premiership, a second-level multinational league system has been organised incorporating a number of associations participating for the first time. The Celebration Cruises Championship has 64 teams from 27 national associations, bringing the full system up to 96 teams from 29 lands.

The championship parallels the structure of its parent, with eight-team sections playing a double round-robin regular season followed by a knockout cup lasting seven rounds. But the championship knockout involves only the top two teams in each section and uses two-legged ties at each level save the final.

The original club contracts in the TSP Premiership are for five seasons. At the end of that time some clubs will be shifted between that league and this one using a scheme not yet fully worked out. But in anticipation of restructuring after the TSP Premiership's fifth season, the Championship added an eighth section with no reference whatsoever to geography.

Championship organizers are delighted at the success of the league in its first two seasons. Two section champions (Malaniuk Dutchmen and Oxbridge) repeated, a first-to-worst story played out in Section 4, eight new clubs attracted followings in Section 8, and six of eight section titles were decided by three points or less.

The league also celebrated the international success of Oxbridge in the UICA Series B Champion's Cup. The SarahRed-n-BarryBlue club advanced to the semifinals of that long-running tournament before falling, an encouragement to all who seek to develop regional football.

Although boundaries remain to be drawn and sections will be realigned, Championship clubs are encouraged by the receptiveness of the football world to a proposed Premiership expansion to 40 teams that will expand promotion opportunities when the first contracts expire. The CCC itself could proceed from there in three main ways: Seven sections of eight, eight sections of seven, or with recruitment eight sections of eight.

Final
Inter Meganton (SAG) 1–0 Benko Gamblers (CKM)

Inter Meganton from Stars and Garters cared little for regular season standings and a first-match home loss in the cup stage, rebounding to post six straight wins and claim the championship with a one-nil win over Benko Gamblers. The Gamblers carried the hopes of Checkmate with them for a national repeat after torching last year's champs Malaniuk Dutchmen for six goals in the semifinals.

These three clubs will represent the league and their homelands in the Series B Champions' Cup, together with semifinalists Athas from Happy Happy Joy Joy and the four quarterfinal losers Sunbury, Forest Nymphs 92, Argos 1093, and Maungakiekie. Each hopes to do what Oxbridge almost did there.

Expansion plans for the TSP Premiership and Championship leagues

The current contract for clubs in the TSP Premiership will expire after next season, the fifth for the Premiership. With the recent explosion in professional association football in many nearby nations, football authorities have developed a long-term consolidated plan for the two top tiers of area play.

Beginning with season six, the Premiership will expand to 40 clubs in four regions of 10 clubs each. The Championship will expand to 72 clubs by adding 16 new clubs, making eight sections of nine clubs each. Regional boundaries will be realigned to reflect growth patterns, particularly in the south, and Championship sections will be totally redrawn and conformed to the Premiership geographic regions on a 2:1 basis. Two large, established nations (Green Jello Salad and Matimar) will be divided north and south administratively to facilitate placing 28 clubs in each region. Finally, a seasonal promotion/relegation arrangement will be instituted whereby the lowest-ranked Premiership team in each region will exchange places with the winner of a two-legged tie between the two Championship section winners in that region.

Although it cannot be known until after next season how the new Premiership will shake out, it is known how the new regions will be drawn and where the 16 new clubs will come from. Here is the list, organized by region and nation. (P) indicates current Premiership clubs, and (new) indicates a club that will begin play in season six in a Championship section.

Season 11 of TSP Super 20 was a season of collapses--the collapse of expansion talks, and the collapse of Pasgarmises. It was also noteworthy for the first instance of back-to-back championships, as Bountiful rode the wave of increased support spawned by hosting the 11th Rugby League World Cup to their third Super 20 crown.

Once thought to be a done deal in the interest of new markets and many silver brighams, expansion foundered on the shoals of popular outcry. This came not only from the supporters of clubs that might be cut, but even from the unlikely provinces of several of the six founding sides. In the end ratings and revenues were up and money talked. We can only await with interest the next move of the backers of expansion in both neighboring lands and grasping cities.

Bountiful's historic title retention did not look at all to be a done deal at mid-season, with the traditional Matimar power Pasgarmises standing three points clear of the field and Bountiful in fourth. But one round 20 result would set the stage for the second half as Bountiful marched into Pasgarmises and thrashed them 26-0 away. By the time the dust settled Bountiful would rise to the top, holding off Fort Mackinac and Alice Springs with Woomera in fourth. And history would be made by storied Motligurpup Pasgarmises as they fell to sixth and failed of Seasogs qualification for the first time in ten seasons.

Season 1 Cookie Cove, Murray Bridge, Pasgarmises, Rothbardton Wednesday.
Season 2 Rothbardton Wednesday (2), Bountiful, Iqaluit, Oxley Vale.
Season 3 Blacksburg Rangers, Independence, Kimball United, South Partridge.
Season 4 Bountiful (2), Iqaluit (2), Polgar City Monarchs, Scottville Scouts.
Season 5 Rothbardton Wednesday (3), Cookie Cove (2), Alice Springs, Mesitgrup Gomtum.

The banner races ranged from the surprising to the normal this season. First-time banner bearers Mesitgrup Gomtum and Alice Springs weren't atop anyone's list of picks in the beginning, but both clubs won through by fairly secure margins and secured a first trip to the Globe Cup for each club in the bargain.

The Northwest, on the other hand, provided the expected slugfest. After their spectacular run into the Globe Cup knockout rounds South Partridge were expected to do well, and they were surely bothered to finish just two points off the pace but still standing fourth. Rothbardton Wednesday became the first club ever to win three banners, with former premiers Polgar City Monarchs and hard-luck Misesstadt also ahead of South Partridge in the most competitive of the four divisions.

Cookie Cove were the other banner-winners this season. The first-season premiers will join Wednesday in representing the league for the third time in five seasons.

The cup season was overshadowed in several cases by thoughts of relegation, with several clubs that were viewed as on the bubble striving for a performance that would weigh in with the selectors. Although five-season accomplishments were primary in the decision, recency was thought to be a plus. In the end all five relegated sides were in the bottom half of their divisions and none survived the second cup round.

One noteworthy upset in an early round saw sixth-place New Zion go into third-place Wasilla and win 3-1 away. But for the most part the cup ran to form and home edge was telling. Do not, however, tell that to Kimball United or their erstwhile opponents. After entering in the third round and holding home ground 2-1 over Vatnsoyrar, United ran off four away wins over quality opposition--Bountiful, Alice Springs, Rothbardton Wednesday on spot kicks, and Cookie Cove to secure their first premiership.

After this season some clubs will be shifted between that league and this one and sections will be redrawn to again match up with geography.

Season 3 Oxbridge (3), Samideurbo (2), EC Hayek, Hope, Lincoln City, Maryborough, Selhurst Amalgamated, Winterhaven Pioneers

Throughout this season there was a special urgency to the eight pennant runs, as winning a section had to be good in the eyes of the selectors for the new Premiership slots. The unavoidable push of geography meant that far more promotions were likely in the south than in the north, and ultimately neither EC Hayek nor Lincoln City (both northern clubs) got enough bump from their titles to make the grade. But the other six pennant winners all made it in, and of the 13 promoting clubs 12 were pennant winners in at least one season. (The exception, Inter Meganton, were overall champions of the second season.)

Season 2 Benko Gamblers (CKM), Athas (HHJ), Malaniuk Dutchmen (CKM), Sunbury (WTZ), Forest Nymphs 92 (GJS), Argos 1093 (PPN), Maungakiekie (KAM)
Season 3 Oxbridge (SBB), Winterhaven Pioneers (GJS), Samideurbo (ESP), EC Hayek (SMU), Gidney Scouts AC (COI), Rogplel (MTM), Lincoln City (SBB)

Oxbridge established themselves at the head of the Championship list with their perfect three-for-three in pennant runs. But for the second time they had a deep cup run end in disappointment by falling to the eventual champions -- in this case the Waltzing Matilda side Maryborough in a one-goal final. Both clubs are among the 13 to be promoted to the Premiership with next season's expansion.

There are strong rumors that this will be the last cup to use the two-legged tie format, with next season's cup stage played as single-elimination with round of entry and home advantage based on finish (roughly paralleling the Premiership).

And shortly after the crowds had dispersed and the squads scattered for the off-season, brief announcements brought joy to some and sadness to others. Five clubs are to be relegated from the Premiership to the Championship: Earth Base One (SKK), Glomsteg (MTM), Grant's Pass (HLM), Mangum Kickers (CUN), and Meadowlands Wanderers (GJS). Three Premiership clubs will change regions. Blacksburg Rangers (KAM) and Sgotmel (MTM) move from Southeast to Northeast, and Kimball United (HLM) moves from Southwest to Northwest.

Thirteen Championship clubs will advance into the expanded 40-team Premiership. Malaniuk Dutchmen (CKM) will join the Northwest and Oxbridge (SBB) the Northeast. The remaining moves are all in the south where seven countries join the Premiership for the first time. Six new Southeast clubs include Athas (HHJ), Hope (MON), Inter Meganton (SAG), Mesitgiglil (MTM), Samideurbo (ESP), and Selhurst Amalgamated (CPL). Five clubs join the Southwest: Argos 1093 (PPN), Cranbourne (WTZ), Hototogisu S.C. (SVS), Maryborough (WTZ), and Winterhaven Pioneers (GJS). Alignment of the new Championship sections, combining 16 new clubs with the five former Premiership sides and 51 Championship returnees, is expected soon.

Final alignments for expanded TSP Premiership and Championship leagues

As the clubs in the TSP Premiership and Championship head into a sixth season, realignment is the word of the day. There will now be 40 clubs in the first-division Premiership, divided into four ten-team regions. The second-division Championship expands to 72 clubs, eight sections of nine, with two Championship sections covering the territory of each Premiership region.

Both leagues will see a new eighteen-round regular season, with 18 matches played by Premiership clubs and 16 by Championship clubs. Promotion and relegation are introduced based on the regular-season results, with the lowest-ranked Premiership team in each region swapping places with the winner of a two-legged tie between the two Championship section winners in that region.

Below is the list, organized by region and nation, of the 112 clubs with their assignment to the Premiership or to a specific numbered Championship section.

Expansion No, New Cities Yes!

After the season 11 collapse of expansion talks, the deal-makers got to work. Incentives were on offer for struggling clubs, particularly those in nations that hosted two sides. The clamor of voices outside Super 20 territory was winnowed to the likeliest backers. And presently the long-discussed pact became real: Super 20 would remain at 20, but three existing clubs were bought out and moved to three new host countries. Misesstadt would hop the pond to London on Brownsea Island in Baden-Powell. McMurdo moved a short ways south to Auldburgh in Esperantujo. And Zarahemla packed their bags for a long journey to Taone Pango, that native moniker winning favor over the better-known name Blacksburg. Ka Mate fans were particularly excited by the news, given their victorious bid to host the world cup of rugby union.

But success will require time for the transplants, as they clustered near mid-pack when all was said and done. Pasgarmises were back after the preceding season's crushing disappointment was met with a sacking and several signings. They couldn't quite stop Woomera from bringing home their third crown, though, and neither of those two sides was as great a story as the lifting of founding club Hyde Park from obscurity to their first Seasogs berth in nine campaigns.

It would become known as the Year Without Sun.

On the weekend of the 11th round of TSP Super 20's thirteenth season, seven volcanoes erupted in a matter of hours. The impact on the land was shocking and immediate, but the impact on the economy was long-lasting. The season did not survive the chaos. It was officially abandoned two weeks after the disaster.

But in the months of healing that were required, sport still played a part. New homes were found for five outlying clubs most affected by adverse events. Slowly facilities were rebuilt and rosters reorganized. And, almost miraculously, only one year would be lost.

Clubs no longer in existence: Auldburgh, Fort Mackinac, London, Sørvágur, Taone Pango.
Clubs back at former locations: Misesstadt, Zarahemla.
Clubs in new TSP Super 20 cities: Juliette (Girl Guiding), Manti (Green Jello Salad), Safe Harbour (Girl Guiding).
Club with new name at same site: Earth Base One (was Gagarin-Armstrong).

After considered review the first ten rounds of the abandoned season were added to the permanent record, although no champion was named. The incomplete round 11 was deemed unofficial.
