In that time period, I think anybody who did not make their way to a church of some description would be under suspicion, or at least people would think something isn't right about them.

Church attendance wasn't mandatory, but as Lamb says, most non-Church-goers would be under suspicion. "Joey" and his family, however, may have been accepted if they are a bit isolated from the village (too tired to look it up just now, but I believe you said something about his cottage being outside the village proper?). Just so long as they're not overtly pagan or non-pious, they may have been left alone; particularly if their other interactions with the village were limited.

It's bloody hard to find a Puritan order of service. Eireann, have you found anything that may be helpful?

Some variant of the Directory of Public Worship would likely have been used. Puritans didn't use liturgies - they thought of them as romish and corrupt. But the Directory was the product of the labor of English Puritans against the High Church of Charles I, and so it is likely to have been the order of service which most New England Puritans brought with them from the old country. So if it wasn't used in full, it would at least have been a formative influence on Puritan worship.

Cheers. I've already got the absolution done, I'll follow a similar form to what there is here. Communion will be held monthly.

Visiting family atm so I can't see what tabs I have open at home (I don't use bookmarks..). When I get back I'll post a few links that I've gathered describing Puritan life. That'll either be about 20 hours from now (if I get home well before I have to go to work) or 29ish (if it has to wait until Saturday morning).

Thanks @ Graymark for the relevant link, in the meantime. I've been studying the relevant histories since this RP began, and am happy to add such a thing to my collection. Anything to keep my posts reasonably historically accurate ;)

This section of this [cogwriter] site is fairly useful. Menus at the top of that first link look good for finding relevant information, or you can just read through that page and follow the links to other pages. I hadn't even looked at the main page until just now, but it looks to have a handy menu on the right for looking up nice stuff.

There is also a wealth of knowledge here [a puritan's mind], with the most relevant items probably being under the "Puritan Study" menu at the top of the page. I've read quite a few articles from this site, and while it's not the prettiest page on the Web, it seems to be good at what it does :)

Other than that, Wikipedia, and the references listed at the bottom, has been my friend for the most part, along with some random Google searches. Thought I had more pages open than this, but I must have trimmed them last time I sorted my tabs :)

Edit: Almost forgot the most important site for this RP! Lady of the Earth is an excellent resource for all things wicca/witchcraft, including rituals, spells, information on covens, and numerous other topics, as the index page I linked to will show you. Dunno how I skipped over this one - it is by far my favourite resource on the subject :)

This is becoming a bit ridiculous if I can advance an objection. We don't need to recreate up to every stereotypical hat a perfect puritan village, we should concentrate on the story at hand. Otherwise we risk to stuck the RP because for every action we have to check 3 pages of Wikipedia.

This happens to be a subject that interests me personally, so I intend to play it right. Your own playing style is, of course, up to you, and I wouldn't ask you to change it. Any time I RP, though, I always go for maximum detail. This is the first time I've gone for historical accuracy, but it is a historical setting, and I usually play FT or fantasy :)

I don't mind checking three pages of Wikipedia (I actually looked up 4-5 non-wiki websites during the Circle setting to get the phase of the moon, the position of the stars and planets, and what those signs meant in astrological terms). If you don't want to, you don't have to. Keep on doin' how you're doin', and don't worry about my own perfectionist style. I posted the sources because others may be interested in accuracy, too. NatSpi said from the start though that this isn't going to be an exact reproduction of the circumstances of historical Salem - if you'll recall, that's why Greymark isn't playing in the first place.

Personally, I prefer detail. That's why I ran through the thread (even before our TGs) to see if you ever mentioned your character hiding his cross or describing what sort of clothes he was wearing. These things do matter to me, but you'll notice that I didn't even bother to ask you about it until it became relevant to the post I was making about Robin spotting the alleged exorcist outside the Church. If you want to keep it minimal, go ahead, I won't stop you. Notice how I haven't imposed my style upon any of the player-characters here, or even villager NPCs beyond a brief reference to Robin telling parishioners off for questioning her habit of sitting in the back of the Church during Service :)

tl:dr; To Each Their Own :)

I just want to get the service right, as I believe its very different from the services at my Church at home and Catholic masses. I want to be accurate about my posts but I'm not going to ask other people to be accurate unless they summon Santa weilding dual-AKs or something during a black mass. :P

Finally give it a go, though I've surprised myself by doing a more.. Christian... individual. Just to see what it would be like.

Name: James Sinclair
Race: Human
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Image

Personality: Fairly arrogant, sometimes grim and serious, a bit puritanical, can have a dry sense of humour. Can be ruthless in battle, not hesitating before shooting a wounded adversary pleading for mercy. He trusts few people- especially not witches, and can be quite capable and level-headed in most situations. (I may develop the personality further in the IC, but that's the best description I can cobble up for now).
Profession: Mercenary at the moment, though he was in the English army at one point, and helped in certain colonial endeavours, such as attacking coastal settlements belonging to enemies of the country. Also did some witch-hunting.
Powers: More aware of supernatural things than most. Since he isn't a Witch/Warlock, or an Exorcist, it's probably best to leave it at that.
Bio: Born to a fairly rich Anglican family in England, he grew up fairly well educated, and took an interest to weapons, as well as the occult, becoming fairly adept with gun and blade, among other weapons. Several family members persuaded him to use that interest of his to help the church with heathens and individuals of darker natures. Although he isn't an exorcist, he has been known for hunting and killing certain witches, real or alleged. He joined the military of England, and participated in certain conquests of foreign lands, such as certain wealthy coastal trading cities around certain parts of Africa, sometimes getting into conflict with the likes of other colonial nation's forces, like the Portuguese. Sooner or later, for reasons he'd rather not recall, he left the army, and ended up becoming a mercenary. He is fairly well-travelled, having been to a diverse range of places in his line of work, only recently coming to Salem, for several reasons, one; to see if there was some money to be earned, two; to check out the town in general, and three; to perhaps restock and resupply if the opportunity arises.
RP Sample: here, here, here, here and here, among others.

Other than that, hope NatSpi likes it. Robin could use some practice with her Ward skill ;)

Oops, I meant to put mercenary; but I had to rush the app a little, because I had some things that needed seeing to.
I'll edit it.
