One Million Moms Decries Bestiality in New Walrus Skittles Ad

Bobby the walrus has some serious game.

In the latest Skittles ad, the large, flippered walrus is caught making out with an attractive blonde on a couch. But when Bobby's supposed girlfriend comes home, the woman explains Bobby is not actually Bobby.

The commercial, which is meant to promote new Skittles flavors that don't match their candy coating, concludes with the tagline "Taste the Rainbow. Deceive the Rainbow."

And although the ad is a little vague, at least one group has failed to find anything funny about the new spot, calling the ad inappropriate.

One Million Moms, a conservative advocacy group, issued the following statement on its website:

We are not sure of Skittles' thought process behind their new ad, but if they are attempting to offend customers, they have succeeded... Parents find this type of advertising inappropriate and unnecessary. Does Skittles' have our children's best interest in mind? Skittles candies are for all ages, but their target market is children.

The parents also allege the advertising is not just unfunny and offensive, but that it irresponsibly takes "lightly the act of bestiality." The group is urges likeminded citizens to send Wrigley Co. an email demanding "they pull this offensive commercial immediately."

But in an email to the Huffington Post, a spokesperson for Wrigley defended the commercial, saying:

Skittles has won millions of fans with its unique and unexpected advertising. As a fun-loving candy brand, we never intend to offend people with our irreverent humor and don’t believe this imaginary situation promotes harm or inappropriate behavior with animals.

Merriam-Webster defines bestiality, n., as "sexual relations between a human being and a lower animal."

While there are no federal anti-bestiality statutes, 30 states currently have criminal laws on the books that prohibit sexual contact with animals, according to Yahoo! Some laws consider the act a felony, while others define it as misdemeanor.

This is not the first time One Million Moms has made headlines for its actions.

The group previously tried (and failed) to get J.C. Penney to drop spokesperson Ellen DeGeneres, condemned America's Favorite Cookie and most recently slammed NBC's new show "The New Normal" as part of a network plot to subject Americans to the "decay of morals and values."

Skittles, on the other hand, is known for its eccentric advertisements, including the vaguely accented "Baby Man Bird" spot, the "Sheep Boy" ad, and, of course, the man with the crazy, trunk-like, Skittles-snatching beard.

In weird news today, the 'anti-immorality' group "One Million Moms" is pushing for Skittles to remove it's weird ad that featured a woman making out with a walrus. As usual with this group, they're only going to succeed in garnering more publicity for Skittles. It's almost as if they're an industry front group. *tinfoil hat*

But as for the discussion: Do you care what this group thinks? Do you want to buy more skittles? Will this thread inevitably be threadjacked into a debate over the legality or illegality of bestiality?

skittles ads have creeped me out for years for different reasons. The sheep human hybrid thing was really freaky but I love the candy and will continue eating it. I think these women just want attention and have nothing better to do... are the ads odd and sometimes lightly disturbing? yes but really they are harmless and I hardly think they are sexual.

My impression was that the advertisement was meant to be surreal, and I doubt that it was actually trying to promote sex with animals. The situation was meant to be funny and absurd. The ridiculousness was the point. I think the people protesting it just didn't get the joke, although it is possible that I am naively thinking the best of the advertisers.

As an official representative of the Walrus community, I must say that I am only mildly bothered by this commercial. It implies that the Walrus people are promiscuous liars, and I can assure you that at least one of those things is likely false. However, I also take offense to the actions of 'One Million Moms'. This belief amongst the Conservative community to equate Walrus-Human love as immoral or even wrong is disgusting and outdated. The Walruses are a proud and noble people, and though we may be a different species, we have fought hard for equal treatment under the law. Especially against the Inuit and Yupik peoples. I call upon Skittles, and indeed people everywhere, to condemn the actions of the 'One Million Moms' organization, which I doubt has a million mothers. To my Walrus brethren everywhere, I ask that you raise your flippers high to show your pride and your strength, and boycott 'One Million Moms' until such a time in which they are no longer relevant or they retract this statement and sign a comically large check to the Walrus-Human Relations Organization, preferably made out to 'cash'.

And for the record, this is just an odd commercial. Nothing more.

Da' Fuq? I mean, seriously? Clearly it is a novel concept called a JOKE. I enjoy seeing them in advertising, because it's a lot easier watching that than the Sham-wow guy rattling off his spiel about beating hookers or sticking to hookers or whatever the hell he's doing now.

One Millions Moms (OMM is their acronym? Really? OMM? There needs to be a counterpart group or two with the acronym 'NOM' that can show up at rallies with them so we can see signs that say 'OMM NOM NOM'. Anyhow-) needs to learn how to take a joke.

This is like the NAACP getting mad about the Starburst 'Scotch-Korean' commercials because they promote the idea that races shouldn't mix or some bullshit. Utterly ridiculous (not to suggest the NAACP would actually say that, but in terms of ridiculousness this is equivalent to that)
