In The Bleachers.

The Mailbag: Key Player for Freedom's Altar, Offense vs Defense in the NSCF, Best unranked teams and more...

by Alen Panek (Featured Columnist).

So, here is the first In The Bleachers Mailbag of the season, these articles will be based around by questions asked by you, the readers. Football is creeping up on us, and that's a great thing. Training camp is starting to roll. Coaches are getting excited for the season. Players are fighting for their position on the depth chart and I can smell freshly cut turf, dew on the grass and football, it is on the air. So let's get going with your questions!

Q: Who is the key player for the Freedom's Altar University Flames this season? As in, if they don't make the playoffs, who will be held most responsible?

A: Well, there are three options with us to go with here. Nero Williams has left as quarterback and he was the key to running this offense, with him passing the ball efficiently and making sure everybody kept to their assignments on every offensive play. He was a brilliant leader and was the focal point of this team. It is important that whoever comes in at quarterback can either equal what he did, by passing the ball with accuracy and making sure he can get the checkdown if he runs the ball. The key to this Flames offense last season was the high completion percentage that made sure there was little chance of turning the ball over and made sure that the Flames didn't put too much work on their defense's plate in their rookie season. In training camp it looks to us as if Jared Newmann, a 6'8 behemoth of a true freshman seems to have the lead.

The great upside this freshman has is his size and his ability to run the ball, he is a huge kid, as stated, but he has the weight too, he isn't skinny and won't be injured by tackles when it comes to him running the ball. He is 245 pounds, that is a lot for an 18 year old kid, but it means he has the power to run and not get injured but also to break tackles too. He's a useful kid to have because of being able to run, with some defenses in the NSCF not being able to deal with quarterbacks who can run the ball effectively. He has the enthusiasm needed to be quarterback and the willingness to learn the role and the job he is needed to do for the Flames, but we still think there are questions about his ability to throw the ball with accuracy. If he can do so, his determination will pay off and the Flames could well go a long way into the play-offs...

...But, if he isn't effective a whole lot more weight will go on senior running back Andre Innouye, the senior running back will need to be the heart and soul of the offense if Newmann doesn't pass effectively. Innouye, luckily, is the sort of running back that can pound it up the gut on every snap. He is a workhorse, if Newmann fails to work, he'll also need to become the leader of the offense and motivate the troops. Innouye will be reliable, we feel, as he has the speed to beat defenders and the power (he weighs in at 225 pounds, which is mostly muscle), to break tackles. He's an elusive back, which is a perfect quality, he's difficult to tackle. Innouye will need to have a career defining season, we expect 1,250 yards plus from him. If he doesn't reach this, the Flames could be in trouble. He should do the job he is needed to do, if he does, the Flames will do brilliantly.

One position that may well be overlooked is center, the Flames had Rocky Telmar at the position last season, a born leader. He was the sort of player who could reassure the whole team even after a huge sack, where a player went wrong with his blocking assignment or whatever - and could also make Nero Williams feel safe when under centre. Taren Hornsby gets the job replacing this man, he'll have to do the same job as Telmar did though, but perhaps his role will be even more scrutinized because of the freshman quarterback who will be in the pocket and will need good protection to grow into the role as the Freedom's Altar QB.

In our mind, there is only one person that will be held responsible by the Flames fans if they don't make the playoffs. We'll eliminate the other two first. We'll start with senior center, Taren Hornsby. He's not going to be the one blamed if they don't reach the playoffs, mainly because he's replacing the biggest fan favourite FAU have ever had. Telmar is irreplaceable, both as a player and in the hearts of Flames fans. Flames fans are well informed about their football team, they understand that Hornsby is taking on a huge task in even taking up the new starting job at the position. They're also informed enough that putting a freshman quarterback right into the starting role is a huge leap of faith and it may not pay off straight away, quarterbacks take time to mature into their role and the quarterback we see in Week One and the one we see in Week Thirteen will be hugely different from one another, with the improvements seen hugely noticeable for Newmann. We still have questions about how accurate his passing will be, but he can certainly run the ball and will have great arm strength (we've not actually seen him take too many reps passing the ball, it's mostly been on quarterback draw plays and such, but with his size, he should be able to throw a decent way), so if the coaches at Freedom's Altar are savvy, then they will most likely start running the option offense and get Newmann comfortable running the ball.

So, that only leaves Andre Innouye, if he doesn't perform well, then the Flames won't reach the playoffs - and because he is the most experienced starter of the three he will be the one held most responsible for it. He is the key for them and he need to have a huge season, we need to see him taking around 25-30 rushing attempts a game, to take the weight off his young quarterback and any other halfbacks who will be given a hand-off or two. This Flames team seem to be one that'll rely on hard running and clever clock management, if it works and if Innouye puts up some good numbers and performances, they should go far in the playoffs.

The responsibility will lie with Innouye if they don't.

Q: Is it better to dominate on defense or offense in NSCF?

A: This is an extremely interesting question and not one that has any simple answer really. To answer it, we have to look back into the past. I'm going to look at the champions each season and see how they performed both offensively and defensively each season - and then make a decision.

Last season, Frbiba State were known for a hardnosed defense and a run-based offense. They averaged 15.5 points per game last year whilst only conceding 7.25 points per game on average. We're going to use 21 points as our threshold here and say any team that scores under this doesn't have the greatest offense (they couldn't get two touchdowns and a field goal on average each game), and a team who concedes less than 10 a game has a dominating defense. Frbiba State relied on a great defense to win them their title, only giving up a touchdown on average - and actually making several shutouts through the season. So that's one point to dominating on defense.

In NSCF 4 we had the UArk Wyverns win the biggest college trophy of them all, they had an offense revered by everybody, managing 24 points per game on average. They did give up around 12.2 points per game through the season, meaning that their great offense managed to lead them to the championship and dominated teams for them. They did still have a very good defense however, but not good enough for our imaginary threshold. Meaning it is 1-1.

Going back to NSCF 3, Utica Tigers won the title and were known for an aggressive offensive gameplan and it worked as it led them the whole way to their second championship. They averaged 32 points per game on offense, there's no point even trying to discover the average points conceded for the Tigers as they didn't concede under 10 points once in the whole season. Only conceding this amount once. They obviously did not rely on their defense to carry them to this championship - so that makes the score 2-1 to offenses.

We're heading back to NSCF 2 now where Eirikssonia University won the championship - the only non-Woodlands team to ever do so. They averaged 29 points per game throughout the season as they scored freely on the arm of Tom Ehrlich. They also conceded around 20.2 points per game, meaning they were not very tight on defense at all. The Tomcats clearly relied on dominating teams with their offense here, meaning it is 3-1 to offense and that lead is unassailable. We shall cover NSCF 1 for posterity, however.

All the way back in the first edition of the NSCF, the Utica Tigers won the championship. They averaged 27.5 points per game on offense, another team dominating away with their offense. They did however concede 17.3 points per game, proving once again that offense was more important. 4-1 to the dominating offenses, with only one defense proving to be more important - the one in the most recent NSCF. Does that mean that having a dominating defense is more relevant to the more recent game? No. Not to us.

In terms of trying to win the NSCF Championship, if you have a dominating offense you can at the very least turn every single game into a shoot-out and at least have a chance at outscoring your opponent in the game. This means that dominating on offense is better in our opinion, it is of course, very good if you can dominate on defense also, but if you can't score, you can't win games - even if you can shut the other teams out, you still need your offense to lead you into position to be able to score (unless your defense can score on interceptions and fumbles etc, which our handy test doesn't account for, but most points are scored when you have the ball). If your defense can dominate and score at the same time, you're set. However, this doesn't occur often, if at all - and so, we see more benefit in having an offense which can score efficiently each game. So the short answer is, it is better to dominate on offense in the NSCF.

Q: How far will the best unranked team go this year?

A: Well, depends on your definition of unranked. Going by the NSCF Top 15 compiled by OSN.net, our own ITB Top 15 rankings or by teams that have never competed in the NSCF before. Unranked in the first two, means being outside the top fifteen teams, the third is slightly different - although the two are very much linked, with no teams that have never competed in the NSCF before being in either of these rankings.

Anyway, there are four teams we rate very highly that are completely new teams to the NSCF. We shall start with the University of Stahalmark at Dunnmaar from Allamunnic States, they're a stereotypical Allamunnic team, with a power running offense and a hardnosed defense that won't give up many points and will probably even generate turnovers. Of course, we also know that Allamunnic teams are typically very strong and are of a high quality. They have a good chance to do very well this season, especially with junior halfback Anders Blumunn who stands at 5'11 and 231 pounds, making him a big back to have. The only problem the Skiltrum may have is with the quality of their conference. They have been sent straight into the fire in the Woodlands Conference, the strongest conference in the NSCF. With a tough running game though, they could cause problems for the tough Woodlands' defenses though.

Second, there is the University of St. Jermaine of Taijan. They have the great luck of being drawn into the Equinox Conference, one of the weakest conferences in the NSCF (if not the weakest), they of course benefit from having what appears - on the face of it - to be a very good team. From watching them in their fall camp, they have two decent quarterbacks, Montague and Rodriguez who could very well end up locked in a battle for the starting role which could rely on one of the two just taking the role in the end. Davis Tong also seems a decent prospect at halfback, but of course, this is just from some snippets in training we've seen. We could very well be wrong, but if these players perform well, up to the expectations we have set them... They could surprise quite a few people.

Next up, there is our own Decraa College. Led by highly recruited Sviatoslaw Kovalyov and an extremely high powered air raid offense, they will try to tear teams apart through the air, repeatedly passing the ball. Their defense doesn't offer much at all, but the Eagles are a strong team on offense. They don't run the ball (unless it's late in the game and/or a very short yardage situation), but they certainly have the quality to do well. After all, they did cause the Royals problems in the MNCF. They're not in the toughest conference ever either, the Sequoia is fairly friendly towards completely new teams. There is really only two big teams, UAD and RMU, after all Netteingen Tech and the University of Korcyka are fairly average (although the latter will probably improve this year) and there is one other newcomer team, Decraa College have a decent chance at having an extremely good season.

Finally, there is the UCLA Bruins of Free South Califas, they are helped by their intimidating atmosphere at the Rose Bowl. 90,000 fans inside the stadium with the searing heat of that particular area possibly causing problems for teams that are not used to the heat. They have what look like some talented players on the roster too, that could well take the Big Eight Conference by storm. Senior wide-out Festus Karolina looks to be a good player who could well burn defenses when used on the outside against possibly smaller cornerbacks. They're not too shabby on defense either, with senior nose tackle Raymundo Baxter being a talent that can reach the quarterback in the backfield and also seemingly stuff the run. UCLA are another team that benefit from being in a weaker conference than teams like the University of Stahalmark at Dunnmaar.

Any one of these four teams could go on to be very successful in their first season in the NSCF, they have the right ingredients - good players, weak schedules and good fans - that could make them go far. The conditions need to be right for them to be successful though, with teams needing luck to do well along the way too.

Basically, if these teams perform well and have enough luck - they will be in with a great shout of reaching the play-offs and perhaps going deep in them - after all, Frbiba State managed to reach the Championship in NSCF 3 - their first season. If these teams play well and get the all important luck needed, along with intimidating home environments and good coaching - they could well emulate the Firebirds.

Q: Are the University of Alzburg-Dyka being over hyped going into this season?

A: I, personally, would say yes. Well informed Royals fans would agree. Other Royals fans, may not (a small minority). You have to remember that the biggest talent to ever come out of the University has just graduated and left for the MFL, with a degree in architectural design. Sadly, the Mikjel Ostgurn era is over. All Royals fans have to come to terms with this. It's great that we have Erritel Hikhrela at the helm though, he's a clever quarterback, but he isn't Mikjel Ostgurn. He doesn't have the arm strength for a start, but his accuracy is very good. He has been touted as the 'best quarterback in the Sequoia Conference' by some media in Khabarovsk Krai, is this right? Well, we're not sure. He's good, but best in the conference? I'm not so sure. Evan Loch is decent for the University of Korcyka Warhawks, RMU don't really offer anyone in this category, Finn Mayrhofer threw more interceptions than touchdowns and is in a competition for the starting gig with Ryan Collaros but Netteingen Tech do have Leiuv Emanuelsen a 6'6, 212 pound monster at the position - who can rush and pass, we think he's a very talented quarterback - but is unlucky to attend an average college. Hikhrela could be in competition with Evan Loch and Leiuv Emanuelsen for the best QB slot in the conference really, but we'll see on that score.

I mean, we do have the best wide receiver in the conference - that is true and Aleksi Tevarz has been noticed for this, with media in Khabarovsk Krai awarding the title of 'best wide receiver in the conference', which has to be taken with a pinch of salt at this point - but his career stats so far offering us a good insight into how he'll do in this season. He's a big talent and could easily eclipse the performances of Yuri Zukov - in the same manner that he has already eclipsed Zukov's stats. Tevarz could easily be the best wide receiver in UAD history. He has the huge stats, but can he provide the clutch performances to match? We'll see, once again.

We also do have one of the best defenses in the NSCF, whether you like it or not. It is a simple fact. But you do have to remember that the secondary is pretty much all new, three new members are in there. Two are freshmen. Our defensive line is strong, with only one new lineman being added - and he's a senior. Our linebackers are fantastic, with Simmundsson and Veronek being experienced and hugely talented - Johnson van Eekeren adds great enthusiasm to this line-up and of course, he is going to be a special player for the Royals. His skill set adding fantastically to what we currently have, he is great in coverage and in stopping the run. The secondary is the only part of the defense that could have questions asked of it, it's strong, but inexperienced. That could be a problem. Again, we will have to see what happens.

So, an above average quarterback, a good offensive line, a good set of receiving corps, a good halfback/fullback pairing on offense. On defense, a strong defensive line and set of linebackers and a good but inexperienced secondary. So is our #3 ranking justified? On this evidence, we'd say maybe just about. Questions around the quarterback and secondary could lead us to drop down to around #5 in the OSN.net Top 15, with some people overestimating just how good the quarterback is (he is good at passing, but offers nothing on the ground and doesn't have great arm strength), and not even asking questions of the young secondary yet. That could change yet, with teams learning that the secondary is young in the opening weeks of the season and then beginning to ask questions on the field by throwing towards the young cornerbacks.

The short version, the Royals are being over hyped, but only ever so slightly. Questions about the quarterback and the secondary will be answered very shortly, the answer we think will be good for both though.

Artheim Imperial Academy Nightwolves Roster for NSCF VI

For funsies, I will try to RP this team every now and then, but I doubt I'll be able to. However, for RP material, I've tried to give as much as I can, and the Emperor of Kryosis is basically a cross between a dystopian dictator and a Bond villain. The whole nation is pretty twisted, and basically evil. It's not a very well-kept secret within Kryosis that Artheim is a military facility... but the Kryosi are very good at preventing news of what they're doing from reaching beyond the Carbos mountains and filtering into Osarius. Expect unjustified, indefinite incarceration if you speak out about what you see while still in Kryosis, lol. Don't worry though, the Emperor will probably have some elaborate execution method planned that you can probably escape... like a laser powered by the fidgeting and sweat of its intended victim... or something like that.

Other than that, do whatever you like. If you intend to have someone die, give me a heads up (on my Osarius account preferably, please) so I can write in a replacement (another clone, of course).

Location: Artheim, Kryosis
Home Stadium: Artheim Underground Military Facility, or "Black Mountain" (23,000)
The stadium is actually a specially sectioned area of the military facility set into the mountain (Black Mountain), located just outside the city boundary of Artheim, and of course, is completely underground. You will be escorted via underground tunnels from within the city walls.
Mascot: Nox, the black wolf of the night

Head Coach: Leroy Granath II (clone)
Assistant Head Coach: Johann Coerver
Style of Play: Aggressive Defense / Run-Heavy Offense

Once again, the Kryosi military have entered a team of matured clones with the aim of testing them for battle. Like four years ago, the Nightwolves are coming from a "cleverly disguised" military training facility, and not an actual college in the traditional sense of the word. Though you'd never know from the outside, the academy does not teach, as you might expect, subjects like Kryosi, History, and Mathematics. Rather, these students study war tactics, and undertake rigorous training to maximise their potential for problem solving. They don't have gym class, but rather they are drilled in military training activities. As the Kryosi military continues to experiment with genetic engineering in order to create the most impressive military possible, these clones are genetically altered -- much like their predecessors of four years ago -- and are considerably more advanced both physically and intellectually than the average man.

As before, the Academy have identified that gridiron serves as the most useful "real-life simulation" of the conditions required to identify battle prowess, without risking the lives of the (extremely expensive) clones. The genetic modification of the Nightwolves players is augmented by nano-technology, which effectively prevents them sustaining 90% of long-term injuries. Effectively, if a player sustains an injury, he will almost certainly be recovered in time for the next game. There are exceptions, such as severe spinal or neck injuries, and certain broken bones, but largely, the nanotech and genetic modifications will enable a speedy recovery.

The Nightwolves now come with an actual gridiron coach, too, a clone engineered from the genetic material of Special Agent Leroy Granath. Granath served as coach of the Osarian national team for a time, and was only revealed to be a sleeper agent for the Kryosi Intelligence and Luminosity League (KILL) after an Osarian investigation into the murder of Martin Connors. Their previous coach, Johann Coerver, is still a part of the research team in Artheim, and will be involved in the running of the team, escaping execution after his spectacular failure on the strength of his intellect and the favourable reports he produced from the experience in NSCF 2. He is the only member of the team who is not a clone.

About the coach
Granath possesses (or possessed, if you like) a keen mind for defensive tactics, and is a stereotypically hard-nosed, aggressive coach. His rigid nature likely stems from his military background -- he served as a captain in the Kryosi army before joining KILL, and rising to Special Agent -- and his compliance with The Emperor's emotional supression. The coach is the only member of the team who has not had his genetic material altered in any way, perhaps a testament to the quality of his genetic source, though he is still not expected to lead the team to storied wins. The entire goal of the Nightwolves is simply to prepare the team for battle and active mission duty. As a result, Granath, in conjunction with Coerver, will perhaps behave oddly in team or play selection, in order to observe and analyse the players' reactions in specific conditions.

About the team
The team will play predominantly in a run-heavy offense, most likely with split backs, and are likely to blitz heavily out of either a 3-4 or 4-3 set on defense. The first priority is to protect the ball on offense (hence the heavy emphasis on running the ball), or to retrieve it on defense (hence the swift, aggressive blitzing). Expect a reasonable number of forced fumbles from the extremely aggressive defense, and potentially a fair few defensive scores, thanks to the highly athletic linebackers on the Nightwolves' roster.

The players are all assigned codenames, unlike in the previous edition, where they were referred to by "given names" and their Kryosi identification number. The cover story for the international community is that the Academy fears that certain players may be targeted for professional gridiron by overseas teams, and in order to keep the talent within Kryosis, actual names are not being provided. Nobody appears to have noticed that Kryosis has no professional gridiron league.

All the players are considered Freshmen, and have a maximum of five games actual experience in gridiron. However, their genetic material possesses encoded data from their predecessors, meaning they are all at least Sophomores in truth. In addition, through the use of "mindhacking" -- a Kryosi technology outlawed in Osarius, the only other country it has been known to exist -- they have the implanted knowledge and experience of players beyond senior level, specifically data taken from "Islanders" (inhabitants of Kyoshiku Island off the coast of Osarius), who are well-known in Osarius for their defensive prowess.

A cabal of silent, shadowy figures effectively runs the country at present, though many believe they are a front for Osarian puppet mastery.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY AT MARDI
THE MARILLS

THE INSTITUTION
Built at 1975, the National University of Mardi was the first order of then-president Demetrius Ferreira, originally was named the University of Ferreira. After Ferreira commited suicide in a horrible manner, a double murder-suicide, the University decided to change its name to Mardi University and then, after impressing the nation with its strong technology center, the University became named the National University at Mardi. Nowadays, the University got itself bigger, creating two smaller affiliated universities, the National University of St. John and the National University of Lavander.

SPORTS
Not an unanimity at sports, the university isn't a big dog in almost anything. By a miracle, the University went through the qualifying that was made by NSI Minister of Sports in order to play at the NSCF. The Marills went through three stronger sportwise universities, the classic Davestone, the very known DuBeaux Rouges and at the finals, eliminated the Blanc Roosters.

SCHEDULE
The Marills will be at the Equinox Conference, with Farstate Cardinals, Laurentia Bears, Toruvian Llamas, Laval Rouge et Our and St. Jermaine Templars. The exact order of the schedule, including the out-of-conference match-ups are still to be defined, though the Marills already declared they are interested on facing any team that is willing to play against them.[/size]

The Place To Go For News Over All The NSCF Conferences

Evaluating The (really) Big 8

The Big 8:
The Big 8 looks to be an extremely strong conference this year as they contain a huge amount of talent. The Big 8 is composed of the following teams:
Bugny A & M: This team went 8-2 last season, winning the Big 8. The team ended with a 112 points differential, and had the best offense in their group.
Saugeais State University: Last season, the Lancers went 7-3. Though this would appear to be great for any team, it only earned them 3rd in their conference. The team finished with the best Defense in their conference
Scott City University: Also going 8-2, this team was strong throughout the season. They appear to be even strong this year as Pre-Season reports indicate.
U of Califas: Ranked 23rd, this university hopes to be a dark horse this year. As an emerging team, the Big 8 will be a true test of their skill.
University of Palmerro: As another cellar-dwelling team, U of P hopes to pull out a winning record amidst the powerful competition.
Wijlik Aviation Academy: Ranked 19th, this team hopes to pull out some victories in a top-heavy conference.

Analysis: The Big 8 could have a champion, in any of the first three teams listed. The competition level seems tight in this group, and as if the rankings have already been defined. Hopefully there will be enough shockers to go around in the "Big 8".

WHOS READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL! The Farstate University Cardinals are. They have been to three straight weeks of training camps preparing for their second season in the NSCF. The team started last week with a preseason scrimmage against the University of Newland Nighthawks, in which the won 42-17 in a sellout crowd at the Newland City Megadome.

Because Farstate is the only returning team in the Equinox Conference, they look to show every team that they are the real deal of the conference, and the will defend their conference championship. They start of the reguualr season against the St. Jermaine University Templars (The SuperPredictor has predicted a 21-13 Farstate win).

This game will show off rookie wide receiver RJ Reynolds (3-time All-Newlandian in Higher Academy) talents. He will be receiving passes from the dominant quarterback Tyler Ross. Tyler Ross became the schools first QB to throw 29 touchdown passes in one season. Also playing will be veteran recever Trayvon Wright who left U of Newland to play ball at Farstate. GO CARDINALS!

Despite making the playoffs for a record fifth straight season -- only rivals UArk can match such a feat -- and winning the Woodlands conference for the third time, Utica will consider last season's performance to largely be a failure. There are positives to take from the campaign, but Mike Zampese has never been one to settle for a mere positive when there is a superlative to be earned.

Utica's domestic campaign saw some hairy moments, and after several injuries effectively decimated the squad, Mike Zampese was forced to alter his plans to redshirt both his freshman quarterbacks. Many feared this would lead to a collapse of sorts, and see the Tigers outside the playoffs for the first time in ... a long time. While other freshmen such as de Koster, Konradsen, Bakheeri and Rubaseki were impressing, it was feared that the running game would struggle without Quentin Jackson's presence, and that this would, in turn, lead to struggles overall on offense.

Much to Zampese's delight -- and that of the fans, no doubt -- these fears did not come to fruition. Daniel Corsey's runningback-by-committee approach took off, with Konradsen and Banks (Utica's two power backs) alternating as the workhorse, while the other split carries with Fabian Barker as either a change of pace back, or a receiver out of the backfield. The successes of the running game opened things up a little for Utica's much-vaunted "Air Assault", making things less difficult for their rookie QBs. Mytanar quarterback Benji Blokhin got the nod originally, and after a rough start, adapted swiftly to the OCGL, combining his mobility with a tendency to hit Michel Evra on short slants to (eventually) help take Utica to a semi-final showdown with hated rivals the Kyoshiku Steel Wolves. The Steel Wolves' staunch defence presented a different kind of problem, however, and Michael VII prodigy Benson Stanley was adjudged to be ready. Talk about a Baptism of Fire (or Iron)! As it turned out, Zampese and Corsey were right, and Stanley orchestrated a remarkable late drive to win the game for the Tigers. In the final, Zampese couldn't choose between the two, and they ended up splitting time under center. This lack of consistency almost cost the Tigers, but Blokhin -- no doubt eager to become a campus hero like Stanley -- scored the winning touchdown in the second period of overtime.

With twenty-six new recruits on the roster this season, and a reasonable number getting to play a large number of snaps in OCGL, the core of this incarnation of the Tigers could be the youngest set of players Zampese has used in NSCF. There is also a lot of talent, despite losing some key players from last season, as the Tigers' recruitment head, Ryan LaTrane, has managed to entice not only eleven of the top fifty recruits within Osarius, but also five highly rated overseas youngsters. Many will be sceptical regarding the performances of these players in NSCF's Woodlands conference -- which has in the past proven much tougher to crack defensively than the OCGL's overly-physical Tubrissian division-- however, Zampese and Corsey's flexible offensive system, combined with the return of both Newton and Howard at quarterback, could reduce the pressure on the youngsters. Anthony Channa's defensive rotation will likely see the defense largely remain fresh, and this may well turn out to be a key factor for Utica as the season wears on. Zampese will also be well aware that his man-management skills are likely going to be a difference maker if Utica are to repeat past successes this term, and he will need to resist the temptation of being dragged into speculation over the Firebirds head coach position (again!), as Woodlands looks stronger than ever, so keeping his focus on a third NSCF title is a must.

This season, there appears to be no obvious weakness in the Tigers roster. There is no obvious star receiver, but Utica have never really needed one with such good quarterbacks in the past. That doesn't seem to have changed, considering the successes of Blokhin and Stanley in the OCGL. The offensive line still doesn't have the same degree of quality in depth as the defensive line, though, and fatigue could be a major issue later in the season.

Anthony Channa's defensive unit looks stronger than ever, however. Two excellent cornerbacks -- including last season's Defensive Player of the Year, Leon Calk -- and a defensive line rotation that has the potential of throwing up the frankly monstrous combination of Hunter (6'6", 289 lbs), de Koster (6'5", 305 lbs), Rubaseki (6'5", 259 lbs) and Bakheeri (6'4", 251 lbs). Aside from de Koster and Rubaseki's dominance in the middle, Bakheeri in particular possesses great speed, and will be likely to terrorize left tackles (and quarterbacks) all season. There are still concerns about Utica's strength against the run, but a triple threat of terror starting at linebacker (Manuwai, Raiola and defensive captain Carthy) may well allay some of those fears. With the Tubrissian division of OCGL largely looking to air-it-out, we haven't seen much need for them to be strong against the run, instead focusing on their ability to rush the passer. Channa seems confident, though, and he's seldom got it wrong on defence during his four year tenure at Utica.

Utica's Special Teams unit looks solid again, too. Toby Davies has looked better as of late, and while it's practically impossible to live up to the successes of Paul Atkinson, he's a reliable placekicker. Returns could be a good source of yards (and even points) for the Tigers this season, with runningback Drake Turnbull taking up a specialist role. Calk, Izmailov, Barker and Gordon are all in line, too, looking to use their enviable speed and agility.

Projected Conference Finishes & Comentary
Big Eight Conference
1 #3 Scott City University 9-1
2 #9 Bugny A&M University 8-2
3 #13 Saugeais State University 8-2
4 Wijlik Aviation Academy 4-6
5 UCLA 1-9
6 University of Palermo 0-10
Conference powerhouses Scott City University, Bugny A&M, and Saugeais State all return, and will contest what should be a very exciting three way battle for the Conference Title. Wijlik Aviation Academy returns after a one season hiatus, while UCLA and the University of Palermo will make their debuts this season.

Projected Champion: Scott City University
On the Rise: Scott City University
Goin' down: Saugeais State
Best Newcomer: UCLA
Fearless Prediction: Scott City University will not win all of their conference games, but will still go 4-0 against the teams from Saugeais.

Celestia Conference
1 #19 Tim City University 10-0
2 Janwick University 9-1
3 Polluxia University 6-4
4 Cegap de Val-Mauricie 3-7
5 Alder University 2-8
6 Coastal Carolina University 0-10
Tim City University is the only ranked team in the NSCF's newest conference. Returning after a season long hiatus, Tim City University should fair pretty well in a very weak conference, using their experience from their season in the Big Eight conference. Janwick University struggled last season in the Equinox Conference, winning only a single game. Despite this however, they went 13-1 in the Citiz Urban Conference during the first season of the Citiz College Sports Administration's Football League, and went on to fall to Touffer University in the National Championship Game.

Projected Champion: Tim City University
On the Rise: Janwick University
Goin' down: Tim City University
Best Newcomer: Polluxia University
Fearless Prediction: The two teams with previous experience in the NSCF will have no problem staying in the top two spots. But that doesn't mean that their won't be upsets among all of the teams in the Conference.

Equinox Conference
1 Farstate University 8-2
2 National University at Mardi 5-5
3 Laurentia University 5-5
4 University of St. Jermaine 5-5
5 Université Laval 4-6
6 Touruvian University 3-7
Clearly the weakest conference in all of the NSCF, Farstate University is the only returning team from NSCF5 in this Conference. Why are we even talking about this conference?

Projected Champion: Farstate University
On the Rise: Everybody except for Farstate University
Goin' down: Farstate University
Best Newcomer: Does it matter?
Fearless PredictionFact: TV ratings will be quite poor for Equinox Conference games.

Horizon Conference
1 #4 Freedom's Altar University 8-2
2 #11 Ramusok Capital University 6-4
3 #14 Stoneshore College 6-4
4 #18 Sacred Heart University 5-5
5 #20 West TaQud University 5-5
6 Green Coast University 0-10
The Horizon Conference will be incredibly competitive, especially for the second spot and entry into the playoffs. Freedom's Altar University has a very strong squad, and should be an easy lock for the number one spot. Ramusok Capital, Stoneshore, and Sacred Heart Universities will all have to duke it out for the second spot, with West TaQud University being a bit of a darkhorse in the competition. Green Coast University will just be trying to find a solid footing, and will need to do so within the first two weeks of the season if they wish to have any hope of even figuring into the Playoff race.

Projected Champions: Freedom's Altar University
On the Rise: West TaQud University
Goin' down: Ramusok Capital University
Best Newcomer: Green Coast University
Fearless Prediction: At least one school from Cosumar, and one school from Yesopalitha, will make the playoffs.

Mineral Conference
1 #6 University of Port Salem 9-1
2 #15 Valor Coast University 7-3
3 Salem Community College 5-5
4 University of Mendella 5-5
5 Hantz Provincial University 3-7
6 Aldin Tech University 1-9
The University of Port Salem has won the last three Mineral Conference Championships, and there's little doubt that they'll do it again. Valor Coast University will put up a strong fight for the title though, but Port Salem's offense and experience will be the deciding factor on who takes the title. The bottom four spots are a bit of a toss up, but Salem Community College should finish outside the bottom two.

Projected Champion: University of Port Salem
On the Rise: University of Port Salem
Goin' down: Valor Coast University
Best Newcomer: University of Mendella
Fearless Prediction: Aldin Tech will get their only win against one of the teams from West Guiana.

Sequoia Conference
1 #5 University of Alzburg-Dyka 9-1
2 #8 Riversburg-Madison University 8-2
3 #10 Netteingen Tech 7-3
4 #12 University of Korcyka 6-4
5 Decraa College 0-10
6 HUGE 0-10
The second strongest conference in all of NSCF behind the Woodlands conference, the Sequoia is home to four teams ranked in the Top Twelve. With the battle at the top so close, and quite hard to call, we feel bad for the two teams at the bottom of the totem poll, Decraa College, and HUGE(which is actually quite small compaired to most of the other teams in NSCF). Alzburg-Dyka should be able to claim one of the top two spots, while Riversburg-Madison, Netteingen Tech, and the University of Korcyka, will be bogged down in a three way fight for a playoff spot.

Projected Champion: University of Alzburg-Dyka
On the Rise: University of Korcyka
Goin' down: No one really
Best Newcomer: Decraa College?
Fearless Prediction: You won't be seeing either HUGE or Decraa College in NSCF7.

Woodlands Conference
1 #1 Frbiba State University 9-1
2 #2 University of Arkinesia 7-3
3 #7 Utica University 6-4
4 #16 Touffer University 4-6
5 #17 Jagoza University 4-6
6 University of Stahalmark at Dunnmaar 0-10
And finally, the Woodlands. It's widely agreed upon that the Woodlands in the strongest conference, but with such strong teams, some of these schools are going to have a hard time winning games, and will probably not see the playoffs. The top two spots will easily go to Frbiba State University and UArk, with Utica, Touffer, and Jagoza just trying to stay alive and do well in the out of conference matches.

Projected Champions: Frbiba State University
On the Rise: Utica University
Goin' down: Jagoza University
Best Newcomer: University of Stahalmark at Dunnmaar
Fearless Prediction: The Woodlands will remain atop of the DSBC Conference Power Rankings all season.

The Wyvern

8-21-2012
The Sports Page

Opening Week

Our amazing Wyverns take the field this week to return to international play. At 8-0 in domestic play, it seems that nothing here can stop the Wyverns, not even a coordinated triple-option attack. The new spread-pass offense unveiled by Coach Welker looks to be successful in Woodlands Conference play.

The Wyverns return fewer starters than ever before, but the few returning players that are on the roster are experienced and out for blood after being stopped short of winning on a two-point conversion attempt in the NSCF final last season. “We had a disappointing end to a great season last year, but we hope to shrug off disappointment and come back as strong as ever this year,” said Coach Welker of his hopes for the new season.

Wyverns fans traveling to the first road game or attending the first home game are to wear as much blue as they can! Go Wyverns!

West TaQud Routs in Season Opener!

"Who knew it was this easy...so far." said McRoss heading back to the locker room. Although the game was a blowout (at home), McRoss only was able to kick one field goal. Though it was an impressive day for the Offense. 2 Passing TDs and 2 Rushing TDs and One Punt Return. McRoss headed back to the locker while everyone started to clap for Jukle and Yoins. (Jukle getting the game ball of course) Then Coach Foutsly came into the locker room. He had a package with him that no one on the team knew. He then grabbed a pocket knife and opened up the package. "Look what we got." said Foutsly. It was a T-Shirt with Red and Black lettering on the front of the t-shirt, and showing each of last season's games starting with week 1 at the top and the out of conference games on the bottom of the t-shirt. Then Foutsly spoke again. "The Only thing these t-shirts are missing are the playoff games. This year will hopefully be different outcome unlike last year. We need to get to the playoffs to show the big dogs of the NSCF the dark horse team. Now about today's game it was indeed what I would like to see. We need to blowout and dominate each game to make us the strongest opponent. Stoneshore stood no chance in today's game." Foutsly then put down the T-Shirt and pick up a newspaper. "Now this is the 5 only College Football Analyst in TaQud. The highest rating we got out of the 5 analyst was losing in the wild card round. This is why we need to prove to everyone that we are not some team opponents can easily stomp on. Now go rest for the rest of the day. We will be practicing tomorrow." Foutsly then went back into his office and McRoss went back to his locker room. "Hopefully my kicking can be even better this season." thought McRoss to himself.

Football Roundup: NSCF Preview

-American Football News from around Michael VII; MFL, NSCF, MACS, High School, it's all here on EverythingSport.Mic

Another season has come and gone and finally the long and torturous offseason has come and gone. The Frbiba State Firebirds have had the championship success wear off, and now have the job of proving that they deserved it. Frbiba State now ranked #1 by all media and considered the best team out there now, have a duty to do, playing in the mental Woodlands Conference where there is no room for struggles, and as such, they are phasing out their old style offense this season while playing to play a more 'normal' pro offense, or to an extent an Air Raid/West Coast Offense. Can the Firebirds do it again and prove they're no one hit wonders?

Meanwhile Jagoza now have a job to do to try use their experienced lineup to actually make some noise in the Woodlands before going into rebuild phase two next season. This season there have been very few recruits in and out of FSU and Jagoza, as many have gone overseas, or forgone NSCF play due to the huge rosters of last season that'd minimise game time for most of the players. The Groundhogs really need to win a Cross River Showdown, to gain morale and some attention in the Woodlands. A NSCF Championship isn't built in a day, but with a few transfers coming in, next season should see more improvements, and more recruits could well come running for the West Bank boys if they are no longer seen as the second-tier college in Michael VII.

Looking into the MACS comp, the Riverside-12 should find itself with another year of JSU dominance, well, at least out of the non-JV teams. Frbiba State JV and Jagoza JV will probably run the standings again, even though they are entirely composed of walk-ons. The best players just wanna wear blue or red, regardless of whether they run on the NSCF field or not. A lot of good recruits have come into the MACS fold instead, but will they get any notice in the lesser comp?

And getting into High School, our Top 10 was released last year, with the Grammar Boy's Coalition dominating the recruit list, especially Mount Sinai Grammar, and we have got to ask, will that happen? Signs point to Delta and Westlake taking the competition this year, even despite the best player coming out of JGS.

And finally getting to the pro section, can Bensville continue their good form? The Bulldogs have made the playoffs for the past two years, but with some personnel changes, we could see some issues arising from there. The small town can't always hang onto their players, and surely New Schmejgland have to win at some point right?

Question One: Will Frbiba State be able to continue their good form this season?
Everyone is expecting FSU to do really well this season, and many have picked them as preseason #1 and odds on to be the NSCF Champion again. Most people are predicting that with Vaclav Treiblik there for a full season this season, they'll have time to grow and even beat Utica for the first time in 3 season. It's been a long time coming, and the Firebirds aren't going to get any better than they are right now. Fred Lewd graduated last season in the best possible way, winning a championship on the way, but even then, the Smash mouth is being put out of phase with Lewd's absence. More will be given to Fred Mallard in his 5th year, and so the Firebirds may well adapt better to the Woodlands style, whether that's good or not is another question, but with the solid defense set in stone at Frbiba St, anything that puts more points on the board should be fine. People will be ready for the Firebirds anyway, and so I think the Firebirds will adapt well to the pressure like they have in NSCF 4 and 5, and head the Woodlands by year end.

Question Two: How long can the Firebirds continue their enviable streak over UArk?
It has to end soon. I think by the first match played against the Wyverns we'll see the streak end. Leonard Coulter has had enough games against Frbiba State to figure them out, and Coach Welker nearly got them in the NSCF Championship. Every match is close and can go either way, but it's going to change. A decent trade up will be beating Utica but losing to UArk. We care more about the Tigers in Frbiba, so that's what I think will go. The Wyverns are very good, and have won a Championship before, being in 3 finals, and will beat the Firebirds eventually. Utica will end up losing eventually surely as well, the Firebirds keep em close every time, and this year seem to have the upper edge.

Question Three: How will Jagoza fare over the next couple seasons?
The next two years will probably be Jagoza's best to make from. The last two seasons they've had Bryan Cousins running from QB, but haven't had an experienced NSCF side and have graduated a lot of players over NSCF 4 and 5. This is their 3rd season in the Woodlands, and should be used to it, even though a record 13 starters have left since last season. Jagoza will either thrive this season, or they'll get entirely dismantled at the huge loss of talent from NSCF 5. All of the Groundhogs' Linebackers are Seniors and know what's going on, same with a lot of the Receivers. After the first match against FSU, we'll see definitively whether or not UJ are the real deal this season. If they stay close or even pull off a win, they're to be watched. If they get thrashed, it'll be same old, same old Jagoza in the NSCF and they'll fail again. So, the Groundhogs should have a decent season this year, but whether or not they're a playoff contender is a different question. In NSCF 7, they'll have another very experienced team, and should be good enough to contend for the Woodlands title.

Question Four: How will both teams cope with strategic changes?
The Firebirds will adapt well to the Smash mouth change to Pro offense. Since NSCF 3 the QB has been a big leader, and thrown a lot of passes. Getting a smart QB will be crucial each time for FSU if they want to run the NSCF again, because the Woodlands doesn't allow for any error. Treiblik will do well in charge of the offense as the pass based offense will suit his style run at UAD. The Groundhogs may struggle a little bit with their defensive change, as there'll be too many Linebackers out there needing to make a change to DB, but overall will find it for the better. The speed of the pass based Woodlands is too much for Jagoza right now, and the 3-4 just isn't enough to keep the opposition out of the end zone. So one season won't be enough to make UJ better defensively, but it might help out a bit more as the season goes on. The Groundhogs have picked the wrong year to have surplus Linebackers, as four of them graduate this year, but not all will be needed anymore. If they'd done the switcheroo in previous seasons, it might have worked out better recruiting wise.

Question Five: How will OOC fare for the two Michael VII schools?
Frbiba State have gone out of their way to make sure they have the undisputed hardest schedule out there. FSU have a huge slate in front of them playing in conference, but chose to make it even more difficult by scheduling a match against Bugny A&M, who have expressed worry about FSU, but will still be a difficult game for the Firebirds. Frbiba State then are at home to Scott City University from Darmen, who are another team to watch out for a little bit, before ending up at Tiegemburg Park again to play UAD in the biggest OOC rivalry out there, where the teams compete for recruits and for playoff seedings all year. Frbiba State will have to play very well to get above 10 wins again.

Jagoza start off OOC with a match at the Rose Bowl to play UCLA in FSC, in what should be a win for the Groundhogs, especially if they can start doing well this season. Though Jagoza haven't had a great road schedule recently, and the unknown UCLA could pose a few issues for UJ. Jagoza then play three-time running Mineral Conference champs UPS in what should be a big shootout encounter where UPS will naturally win by a few touchdowns. UPS have the issue of an easy IC schedule, so if UJ scare em up a bit early, the Anchors could fall, especially away from home at Groundhog Field. Finally Jagoza host Saugeais State, in a match that could go either way, but the Groundhogs are capable of winning. Overall it should be at least a 6-7 season for the Groundhogs, if they learn to play with a lot of heart.

Question Six: Do Jagoza State win the Riverside-12 Conference in MACS play?
Jagoza State will win the MACS Championship this year, again. The Pirates are very strong this season, but only outside of the R-12 because the JV squads aren't eligible to win the MACS Varsity Championship. Frbiba State JV should win the R-12 this year, but if JSU have beat the Firebirds in their matchup in Jagoza, it should pave the way for JSU to take the conference outright and finally prove that they are the undisputed champs, and not just a team that even the NSCF JV squads beat up on. Not putting money on it, but think it's worth betting on if you have some spare change.

Question Seven: Do MSGS continue their High School dominance?
Simply put. No. MSGS have a great O-Line, and excellent two-way players, but this is the year for Westlake and Delta to fight it out. The Grammar Conference will be much more even this year as even St Dom's will wake up with a great offensive linemen in Philip Menzies that could help the Option work better at St Dom's. Westlake also have great Defensive Backs that will find it simple enough to cut down MSGS, and so the Golden Lions will be tested. They won't make the State Final this season, and their epic run of championships will be over. Delta/Westlake Final for Grammar Boys' Conference.

Question Eight: Where do the best recruits go?
1. Dirk Taylor, WR, Jagoza Grammar. Will go to Jagoza.
2. Philip Menzies, OL, St Dominic's School. Will head overseas, likely to Utica/UAD.
3. Jeff Carter, LB, Frbiba Grammar. Will head overseas too, likely to RMU/SCU, perhaps courting Utica/UArk.
4. Terrence Davies, QB, Mt Sinai Grammar. Will stay in M7, could go either way.
5. Ashley Fleming, CB, Westlake High. To Jagoza.
6. Vincent Jennings, RB, Mt Sinai Grammar. To Frbiba St.
7. Vaughan Greening, QB, Delta High. May not play NSCF ball. JSU is in the equation. Plays basketball too, so MACS may be intriguing.
8. Jonathan Barkley, DL, Frbiba High. To Frbiba St.
9. Dennis Willie, TE, Mt Sinai Grammar. Going overseas. Any of the OOC foes will be in the picture.
10. Reggie Jackson, DB, Westlake High. Will fight between FSU/Jagoza and UAD.

Question Nine: Do New Schmejgland finally win a MFL Championship?
Unlikely. They've been Minor Premiers the past two seasons, and evidence would suggest that they fail to pull it off again. Bensville won't make the playoffs this season for change, while Southland and Kovalchuk will be the top guns this season come playoffs time. New Schmejgland can seal their destiny in Week Two for the Lake Koval Cup, whoever wins will have momentum on their side, and the winner of this match will win the MFL Championships I think.

Question Ten: Final records for FSU and Jagoza?
FSU will go 10-3, losing to Utica once, UArk once, and likely to UAD in Tiegemburg in Week 13. FSU can go undefeated, but at worst it's 9-4, and at best 12-1 I think.
Jagoza goes 6-7, dropping to FSU twice, Utica twice, UArk twice, and UPS in OOC week. They could grab a few from wins over UArk, UPS and FSU, but Utica will be a stalwart. At best 7-6, and at worst 3-10.

That's it for now, we'll answer more questions next week on EverythingSport.mic, with post match reports from FSU and Jagoza's matches!

Weather turns game into Mudbath

A terrible field and dreadful weather caused the Ducks and Eagles to rewind to a different NSCF era, a time when points came at a premium and one field goal could decide a game. They trudged through the quagmire of Anatidae Field, nearly going all night without scoring. Nearly.

Vladimir de Knegt's 24-yard field goal with 17 seconds left Monday night gave RMU a 3-0 opening day victory over newcomers Decraa College is what was an unconvincing performance by the Ducks.

"Those conditions, whew, they were horrendous," Ducks wide receiver Kristófer Salbergsson said after daylong rain and new sod created awful playing conditions. "The footing was bad, all of a sudden you'd hit a water puddle and sink down. Some of defensive backs were scared about falling down and giving up a big play."

Hanging with the Ducks (1-0) for 59½ minutes, Decraa (0-1) almost pushed this mess to overtime, where RMU is traditionally not as strong , but the Eagles managed only 159 yards while going nowhere nearly all night.

"That's what I was afraid of, overtime," Ducks linebacker Wiard van den Kerkhof said. "You just knew it was going to be a 3-0 game, a 6-0 game."

The only scoring drive started on the Eagles 42 after Decraa punted out of its end zone. Ryan Colloros drove the Ducks into field goal range with completions of 21, 11 and 6 yards to Salbergsson.

de Knegt, who had missed badly from 45 yards earlier on the rain-drenched field, came through after Colloros was sacked on third down. "You put new sod in and weather like this, it's not a good combination," de Knegt said. "I planted [on his first field goal try] and the whole sod moved over."

NSCF games have been played in downpours and blizzards, and the aftermath of a hurricane but this was a first: a lightning and heavy rain delay in a late August game in Riversburg. Lightning chased the players off the field during the pregame warmups, and the teams were given only nine minutes for additional warmups before the game started at 8:55 p.m., 25 minutes later than scheduled.

After five high school and college games were played at Anatidae Field last weekend, crews hurriedly put down a new layer of sod atop the chewed-up turf for Monday night's game. "It was like being on the beach in the sand on every play," said a Decraa linebacker.

The delayed start meant no national anthem or player introductions. The rain washed away nearly all the yard lines on a new grass field that had been in place less than 24 hours, and Anatidae Field crews hurriedly put down new lines at halftime.

The offenses didn't need to be introduced, considering how little yardage was gained. With huge divots being kicked up play after play, the Ducks had 112 yards and the Eagles only 71 by halftime, even with the Decraa running back back on the field, at least for a few minutes.

The scat back, reinstated last week following his return from shoulder surgery, carried six times for 15 yards in his first game, before tweaking his hamstring. "My No. 1 concern coming into the game was that you hurry a guy back, obviously you can get hurt," said the Decraa coach.

The field was covered during the daylong rain, but quite a bit of water found its way under the protective tarps and there were numerous puddles and mushy spots once the covering was removed. Wide receivers slipped on several pass plays, and running backs repeatedly lost their footing before tacklers arrived.

"In the NSCF, I've never played on a field that bad," said the Eagles kicker. "But we knew that it would be like that once it was re-sodded. We knew what the conditions would be like."

Late in the third quarter, Decraa's punt from near the Decraa goal line came straight down and plugged in the drenched turf like an arrow, burying itself several inches deep.

A few minutes later, de Knegt's 45-yard field goal attempt into a swirling wind and rain fell far short. de Knegt had missed only once previously in 19 tries last season.

RMU's opening drive ended with Colloros being intercepted by the starting Decraa MLB along the Steelers' sideline, and the MLB yelled at their bench for several seconds after making the play.

"He kept trash talking the whole game, but we love him," Salbergsson said. "I know he wanted to win this game more than anything."

- Dyka Express -

Hikhrela and co. shoot down the Warhawks.

by Ravil Gavrilov

There did not appear to be any hangover from Mikjel Ostgurn's graduation as the Royals blazed the Warhawks both on the ground and through the air, with the defence also standing up and creating four turnovers on the game. Johnson van Eekeren, redshirt sophomore outside linebacker was the most valued player for the Royals and he certainly deserved the accolade as he recorded 4 solo tackles, one sack, one interception (returned for a touchdown), and a forced fumble (recovered by Ragnar Simmundsson). His statistics were enough for him, the general performance was even better - Warhawks' quarterback Evan Loch was fearful of throwing near him when he dropped into coverage - and when he did, the results were not very good at all, van Eekeren either breaking up the pass play or managing an interception.

The Royals got off to a fast start, with Ihor Voronkov grinding out the yards early on and Erritel Hikhrela also helping out through the air. Voronkov did impress on the ground and will form part of an absolutely lethal double act in the backfield with Hikhrela, as Voronkov showed as he eluded the Warhawks defensive line and defensive backs on a pitch to the outside where the blocking was perfect. He then added to this around four minutes later - after an interception from freshman cornerback Gordey Zubarev - with a second run play, this time on a counter - leading the whole Korcyka defense to take a step the wrong way and then giving Voronkov enough time (let's be honest, all the guy needs is a second), to get moving the other way - Voronkov broke a tackle to take it to the house and give UAD a two touchdown lead. Voronkov really did impress throughout the game, but these two early touchdowns really set the tone for what was a fantastic performance by the sophomore halfback.

Erritel Hikhrela also performed well, passing for 246 yards in the game and one touchdown. He was fairly efficient through the air, managing a 71.9% completion percentage. His performance was good, especially as he did what he was needed to do, become a game manager - making sure that nothing was wasted on the field and passing only when needed. This led to him not throwing an interception all game and showing how good he could be this year, for Hikhrela, it isn't just that, however, he also wants to be drafted to the MFL - even if it would only be in the third round, which is where he's being projected at the start of this season - the lack of arm strength seriously hindering his value, performances such as these will bolster his value no end. He did show off some arm strength when he looped a ball over the heads of the Warhawks' secondary and into the hands of Sawa Efremov who showed sideline speed to get into the endzone and put Alzburg-Dyka a long way ahead in the game.

Evan Loch responded to Hikhrela in the second quarter by finding tight-end David Kaminsky over the middle, the big man showed off some surprising speed - but also had a lot of open space as the Royals had blitzed on the play, with Loch showing fantastic poise and bravery to stay in the pocket until the last possible moment before firing off a pass and then getting crushed by Marwan Pijnenberg (who recorded two sacks on the day), Kaminsky was left with a one on one with Ragnar Simmundsson, who uncharacteristically missed a tackle, leaving Kaminsky a huge gap to run through, with the safeties spread wider than usual on the blitz play allowing him to run away from them and in for a touchdown to bring the Warhawks back into the game. Of course, this did not actual materialize, with UAD quickly turning things around as Johnson van Eekeren made the second interception of the game, turning it into a pick six, taking it off the palms of Kaminsky and then turning it upfield and all the way for a touchdown to complete what was pretty much a perfect game.

Johnson van Eekeren then forced a fumble on his own 30 yard line and Ragnar Simmundsson recovered it, diving on the ball and keeping it. This gave UAD a chance to go down the other end of the field and score still, a combination of Erritel Hikhrela's neat passing and Ihor Voronkov producing a couple of big-time runs led UAD down to the 25 yard line with around three seconds left. A time-out was taken and freshman kicker Maxim Ignatiev put the Royals up 31-7 at half-time, taking a mammoth lead into the second half against a team that was expected to be extremely competitive within the Sequoia Conference this year, and perhaps even qualify for the play-offs with a good performance in the non-conference games. A start like this would not help their morale in the slightest.

Another drive got the Royals down to the 28 yard line before they went three and out and let Maxim Ignatiev kick another field goal and this put them 34-7 ahead, at this point it seemed like UAD were almost running the score up and second-string quarterback Marc Zotov was substituted into the game. Zotov was perfect on the field, passing for 9 completions, 71 yards and a touchdown. He handed off to Ihor Voronkov in the Warhawks' redzone, Voronkov lowering the shoulder and charging up the gut for the touchdown. 41-7 going into the final quarter, they added to this with Marc Zotov firing an 18 yard pass to the wide receiver from Khabarovsk Krai, Reda Kaijser, finalising the game 48-7 and sending a message to everybody in the NSCF that UAD are ready for anything, even with out Mikjel Ostgurn.

The offense was awe inspiring in the first game of the season, never mind that, the team as a whole was awe inspiring. They dominated in all quarters and every part of the game, the defense very nearly shutting out the University of Korcyka Warhawks - had it not been for a blitz called at the wrong time, they probably would have. It will be interesting to see if the Royals can continue this type of form against the always competitive Netteingen Tech, they will be away from the rocking Tiegemburk Park and will have to deal with a hostile atmosphere in Khabarovsk Krai, but not from Ducks fans this time around. Go Royals!

NSCF Power Ranking Top Ten
Review by Harold Matterhorn, Arjen Miller, Xavier Camacho and Marlon Phillips
(Rank changes are compared to pre-season)

01
Image
University of Arkinesia
The scariest thing about the Wyverns is their offense. This is clear. Their demolition of Stalhamark -- a college coming out of the most successful gridiron nation in the multiverse in recent years -- set down a marker for their conference rivals. A statement of intent, if you like. At the moment, last season's runners-up are the team to beat. Just gotta look out for that "curse".

02
Image
University of Alzburg-Dyka
Many questioned how UAD would fare without star quarterback -- and two-time NSCF Most Outstanding Player -- Mikjel Ostgurn, and the Mytanar college have answered. In style. A forty-one point margin of victory over Korcyka was arguably the best result of opening week, and highlights exactly why UAD will likely be looking at a deep playoff run.

03
Image
Utica University
Can't ask for a better start than beating the reigning champions on their own turf, and that's exactly what the Tigers have done. It was a close one -- as is normal between the two teams -- but it certainly dispelled some of the doubts surrounding the current incarnation of the Tigers, and re-established them as a force to be reckoned with this season.

04
Image
Scott City University
Darmen's top team started this season the way they ended the last. Reaching the final four of NSCF 5 was no fluke, and the Big Eight champions will be going all out to repeat -- if not go further -- even if their own domestic press doesn't think they will. Their strong schedule will make it tougher, but we think that their decision to arrange tough out-of-conference games shows their confidence. Keep an eye on them.

05
Image
Frbiba State University
Despite their defeat to rivals Utica, the Firebirds looked strong at Red Plains Stadium. A narrow, three point defeat to one of the best college sides in the multiverse isn't exactly a crisis. The Firebirds' defense performed admirably against a versatile Tigers offense, and should see them do well in the brutally difficult Woodlands conference. We're backing FSU to bounce back next week.

06
Image
University of Port Salem
Perennial playoff side, and apparently unchallenged as kings of the Mineral conference, Port Salem look stronger than ever this season. Next week they face Hantz Provincial University -- another newcomer side -- and are in a great position to build on their strong side. In previous seasons, we have questioned the Anchors' strength, but this season might be the one where things are different.

07
Image
Freedom's Altar University
The Horizon conference champions looked strong with a ten point shutout of newcomers Green Coast University, and will now seek to build on that and retain their title. With Ramusok Capital University looking strong on offense, and West TaQud looking good on both sides of the ball, the Flames will really need to maintain their strong defensive play if they are to guarantee a playoff berth.

08
Image
West TaQud University
West TaQud were horribly unfortunate not to make the playoffs last season, and they look like they've really stepped up a gear in an attempt to clear that hurdle. They don't look likely to suffer a sophomore slump on this form, considering their stellar showing against veteran side Stoneshore College. This is definitely a team on the up.

09
Image
Ramusok Capital University
After their struggles last season, the Dragons have bounced back perfectly. A thirty-eight point shutout of Yesopalithan newcomers Sacred Heart represented a return to form for the six season veterans. If they can maintain this level of offensive performance, the Dragons will almost certainly be in with a shot at the championship game.

10
Image
Farstate University
The reigning Equinox conference champions started with a much-needed victory, but we felt that their result was less convincing than the teams above them. As things stand, there is little to suggest that the Newland-America side won't repeat as conference champions, but they will need to perform even better than in their opening win if they are to challenge for the championship.

The Wyvern

8-23-2012
The Sports Page

A Fast Start

The Wyverns looked good in domestic play, but nobody could have expected a 39-6 blowout against newcomer USDS. Leonard Coulter (QB, 5SR) and company romped on the hapless opposing defense and made the game look like a scrimmage. “Coach Welker told us to give it all we had and start the season off right, and I think we did just that,” said Coulter of the game. But the younger Coulter wasn't the only one blowing up the scoreboard. The defense did their part too, with a interception returned for a touchdown, two safeties, and two forced fumbles.

“I don't think even I expected to start this well, but I'll take it,” said Coach Welker of the season opener. “We brought the best game we could and I think that to an unquestionable level that strategy paid off today. Big wins aren't common in the Woodlands Conference, so we take each one that we can get.”

Coulter had a career game under center, throwing for 424 yards and not one, not two, but four touchdown strikes as Kelly Hammes plowed through defensive boxes for 102 yards rushing and no fumbles. “Lenny told us to block for him, so that's exactly what we did,” in the words of guard Javier Lembo, a junior.

The effort paid off as USDS earned no sacks, no forced fumbles, not even so much as a knockdown against the spread-pass machine that Joe Sparling unleashed on the NSCF community. “It's been working at home, so it's not surprising to see this system working against international squads. But the true tests lie ahead,” said Coach Sparling in a post-game interview. “It'll wake everyone up, at least.”

Indeed, the early rankings out of Osarius list the Wyverns as a near-consensus #1 team heading into matchday two. But can the Wyverns hold on? Here's some storylines going into our next matchup, this one with Frbiba State:
  • Will Glenn Railey or Louis Langford be able to take full control of the fullback position?
  • Can the young-gun defense step it up against a tougher opponent?
  • Will Leonard Coulter stay productive?

STAT LEADERS AFTER WEEK 1
Passing
QB #5 Leonard Coulter 23/31, 424 yards, 4 TD, 231.6 passer rating

HB #33 Kelly Hammes 15 attempts, 102 yards, 6.8 yards/carry
FB #27 Glenn Railey 2 attempts, 4 yards, 2 yards/carry

QB #5 Leonard Coulter 1 attempt, 4 yards, 4 yards/carry

Receiving

The CollegeCircuit

The Place To Go For News Over All The NSCF Conferences

Predictions & Placements

Predicted Champion: Bugny A & M

Big 8 Predictions

1 Bugny A&M University Eagles [SAU] Saugeais
2 Saugeais State University Lancers [SAU] Saugeais
3 Scott City University Broncos [DAR] Darmen
4 University of Palermo Purple Aces [AND] The Andromeda Islands
5 Wijlik Aviation Academy Skyhawks [BOR] Boriem
6 U. of Califas at Los Angeles Bruins [FSC] Free South Califas

In the tightly competitive Big 8 conference, teams are looking for a leg up any way they can. Though Scott City should statistically and historically be the leader, looking at the rigor of their schedule; dominating this group will be hard. Bugny A&M also look as strong as ever, and have not only earned CC's predicted conference winner, but have also earned the projected champion prediction. Saugeais State will once again be considered a great team in a greater conference. Though they will be bumped up slightly, it will not be enough to crown then Conference Champions.

Celestia Conference

Tim City University Bears [DAR] Darmen
Janwick University Tigers [CVC] Civil Citizenry
Polluxia University Polars [VTR] Vettrera
Alder University Bandits [OVE] The Ovian Empire
Cegap de Val-Mauricie Orpailleurs [SCM] Sicoutimont
Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers [USD] United South Dominion

In a conference lacking maturity, it seems obvious that the most experienced teams ill reign supreme. Though the first two spots seem set in stone, it looks as if the battle for third will be close. The Polluxia University Polars and the Alder University Bandits both have good odds when it comes to claiming a positive record. This conference may not be the most established, but it appears as if there will be enough exciting finishes to go around.

Equinox Conference

Farstate University Cardinals [NLA] Newland-America
National University at Mardi Marills [NSI] N. Sunrise Islands
Laurentia University Bears [LYM] Lymantatia
University of St. Jermaine Templars [TAI] Taijan
Toruvian University Llamas [OUR] Ouearotion
Université Laval Rouge et Or [EQB] Eastern Quebec

In a conference with not much to write about, everyone is up in the air except for the Farstate Cardinals, who are expected to take the Conference easily. If they do end up slipping though, this group will become a lot more interesting. And that just may make up for the lack of skill.

Horizon Conference

Freedom's Altar University Flames [YSP] Yesopalitha
West Taqud University Cereal Killers [TAQ] TaQud
Ramusok Capital University Dragons [COS] Cosumar
Sacred Heart University Crusaders [YSP] Yesopalitha
Stoneshore College Bruins [COS] Cosumar
Green Coast University Bullfrogs [BVR] Beaverriver

When six teams come from four nations, you know they'll be enough rivalry to go around. In a tightly contested conference, it seems as though every game will be as important as ever. Each team will need to play on a nightly basis in order to stay in the game. Freedom's Altar is expected to find themselves atop this conference. Followed by West Taquad, and then Ramusok.

Mineral Conference

Valor Coast University Cyclones [VTR] Vettrera
University of Port Salem Anchors [WGA] West Guiana
Salem Community College Saints [WGA] West Guiana
Hantz Provincial University Tigers [BEL] Beldonia
Aldin Tech University Wasps [NFK] North Franklin
University of Mendella Lions [ADN] Adun

Port Salem has dominated the Mineral conference for quite a while, but that just may change this season. As The Valor Coast Cyclones go into their 2nd season as a part of the NSCF, they just may be able to sink the Anchors. Last season the two teams went (1-1) against eachother, as the Cyclones delivered the Anchors their only loss. West Guiana has some strong teams within them, and at least one is expected to make the playoffs.

Woodlands Conference

University of Arkinesia Wyverns [ARK] Arkinesia
Utica University Tigers [OSR] Osarius
Jagoza University Groundhogs [MCV] Michael VII
Frbiba State University Firebirds [MCV] Michael VII
Touffer University Wizards [CVC] Civil Citizenry
U. of Stahalmark at Dunnmaar Skiltrum [AMS] Allamunnic States

In a conference where champions are born, it shouldn't be odd that we are predicting outside the box here. Looking at each team's momentum and potential, it seems as though Frbiba will not be making the playoffs this year. Fear not Michael VII, because it seems as though Jagoza will pick up some of the slack and find themselves ranked third in the group. The Wyveners are expected to top the conference, with the legendary Tigers close behind.

Sequoia Conference

University of Alzburg-Dyka Royals [MYT] Mytannion
Riversburg-Madison University Ducks [KBK] Khabarovsk Krai
Netteingen Tech Hyenas [KBK] Khabarovsk Krai
University of Korcyka Warhawks [THT] Thatius
HUGE Super Destroyers [HLK] Hulkamania
Decraa College Eagles [MYT] Mytannion

In a conference with elevated skill, it's hard to imagine placings for these teams. Starting from the outliers, we see both Mytonnion squads in very different postitions. We have the Royals taking the conference, and the Eagles cellar-dwelling in their inaugrial year. HUGE doesn't seem to pose a huge threat, as they are ranked 5th in the conference. The two teams from Khabarosk Krai are expected to take their talents to 2nd & 3rd in their groups. Lastly, we see the Warhawks at the middle of the road.

Okay, i'll be the first to say it I was taken back how we only won by fourteen total points. But at the same time I'm happy that we won, none the less we need to have a better performance than what we had against Salem. But our offenses performance against that struggling Saint defense, Chris Dodd had a great day for his first college start and for a freshman he did very well.
So this is just form the first quarter I didn't do the rest of the game because by the end of this quarter we're already up 12-0.

33 yard field goal is good.
End 1st Quarter

So in the first quarter alone Dodd did pretty good he was 8 of 10 for 115 yards and one interception, the running game did well to after in the first gained a total of 31 yards, alone we had a total of 146 yards of total offense, yes that interception hurt, and the Saints scored three off that, but who didn't love Tevor Byane's sack on Hamlin?

So The Anchors after the first din't score until the start of the third, while the Saints kicked another field goal and pulled with in six. Dodd in the second was 6 of 9 for 97 yards and the running game gained 52 more yards.

In the third Dodd threw a bomb, I mean he threw a bomb 99 yards for the TD! Coach Shuler goes for the two point conversion and we get it, going up 20-6. All in all the game was a great start for our rookie quarter back, what a great day he had, but this is against a very bad defense over all.

NS is just a state of mind, time has no boundary nor does our sanity.

Please ignore my senseless ramblings, I'm getting old.

West TaQud Take Lead Of Horizon Conference!

"Another easy victory today. This time I actually got 4 field goals in this game!" said McRoss Avery talking to some Equipment Manager for the West TaQud Team. "At least you finally were able to now come in first place! Well First Place thanks to the Point Differential..." said the Equipment Manager. "Well that's what is important about scoring against these teams and being on the top. Every point matters against a team even if they are good or bad." said McRoss. "Speaking of being on top, did you see the NSCF Power Rankings?" asked the Equipment Manager. "No why?" replied McRoss. The Equipment Manager then pulled out a piece of newspaper from Coach Foutsly's office. "Right Here check it out." said the Manager. McRoss looked down at the Rankings and saw West TaQud's Name on there at number eight. "Wow we are really in there!" "And look what they say about the Football Team!" said the Manager pointing at the list. McRoss began reading the info.

"Glad to see we are finally getting recognized by the rest of NSCF!" said McRoss with a smile on his face. "Don't let the hype get to your head or actions though. You need to stay focus every game to get you guys into the playoffs this year." said the Manager. "Yeah. I guess you have a point there." said McRoss. The manager then left the locker room to go pick up the rest of the equipment. "Man. We are in the Top 10. Hopefully this is just the start of great fortunes happening to me and the rest of the football players." thought McRoss.
