Classified as a Capitalist Paradise by the World Census, Amstaad & Bierlin is a huge, cultured nation known for its safety and its bustling tourism industry. World radicals also know them for their state-subsidized arms manufacturing industry, making it laughably clear how fragile their "free market" really is without violent state intervention. Despite their capitalist rhetoric, A&B have 45% of their gross domestic product generated in the public sector. They spend 51% of their budget on policing & military, with little left over for citizen welfare and public transport. However, civil rights have roughly stabilized in recent years, and the devastating fluctuations of decades ago seem to be a thing of the past. Political freedom is about as high as it's ever been, which is not very high. While the Marx-Engels Emancipation Scale shows that A&B's income equality is fourth in the group, well behind FSC's 177 at a paltry 130, but certainly above the world average of 111.

As noted above, the industrial output of Amstaad & Bierlin is marked by very high activity in the Arms Manufacturing sector. Their Book Publishing industry also generates above-average activity (FSC's is average). Other than that, plus policing, military exercises, and tourism-related business, economic activity is relatively low in other sectors. The massive law enforcement presence in A&B will be a culture shock for visiting Califans, who long ago shut down all prisons. Thankfully for Califans, possession of personal amounts of marijuana is legal. It remains to be seen how the joint-passing tradition of Califan baseball fans will go over at the stadium, though.

The A&B delegation have some influence in Esportiva, where they are noted for organizing a number of sports tournaments, most recently a beach soccer cup. They were rated the most secular in the group by the World Census. Their citizens are ruder than average, but not as much as those of Suageais, Qazox and Luziyca. A&B is considered a full hundred points safer than South Califas, which itself is almost 100 points safer than the world average. Crime is not exactly unknown. Noted University of Califas at Santa Barbara sociologist Noa Helge links the troublesome crime wave to the emergence of a prison-industrial complex alongside a military-industrial complex to build a school-to-prison pipeline in the society. This sort of "pipeline" was identified as a major problem in California in the Revolution Letters and explicitly banned in subsequent Califan federal constitutions. Essentially, young A&B folk are presented with the option of obeying the state authority and respecting its monopoly on violence; or disrespecting the social order and being institutionalized in prison records. A&B is known for its rebellious youth culture. Unexpected death is relatively rare, however. Also, they are not noticeably authoritarian from the perspective of the World Census, which is of course highly skewed for Califans.

Amstaad & Bierlin society is slightly more conservative than the world average, but only slightly. They are 21 points higher than FSC on the Bush-Santorum Dawning Terror Index, however. Interestingly, their tax rate is the second-highest in the group, and considered a full two points higher than South Califas on the Inverse Hayek Index. Though tourism is a major part of Amstaad & Bierlin's economy, they attract 62 fewer net tourists per hour than FSC, though still almost 90 points above the world median. They have even fewer weapons per citizen than South Califas, which is odd given that arms drive their economy. The weather is less than stellar, but better than average. Their social welfare program attracts about half as much government funding as ours.

Corruption is rife in Amstaad & Bierlin from the perspective of a traveling Califan. Bribes are often required to file forms, get in the right line to file forms, get the right info about where to stand in line, or get someone who speaks your language to translate for you. Relying on their stable climate and high level of tourist interest, low-level government officials are likely to exploit travelers. We recommend that Califans travel into and through Amstaad & Bierlin with stained clothes in poor repair, and admit to owning valuable items and electronic devices only in hushed tones, if absolutely necessary. Backpacks and maps are also recommended apparel, because while the A&B people are less than compassionate to strangers, at least the police might draw innocent conclusions about you which could preclude an embarrassing and costly ordeal.

The Pony Republic of Equestrian States
National Baseball Team - World Baseball Classic 23

Team Background
Although the Equestrian team performed very poorly in their World Baseball Classic debut at WBC22, the sport has already seen an increase in popularity within the Equestrian States. The Equestrian baseball team was also one of the first national teams from the Equestrian States to feature non-ponies as a key part of the lineup. However, due to the many losses suffered by the team during the tournament, the non-pony players have been criticized by the more conservative sports reporters as being the reason for the failure of the team. As the fourth seed in their group, nobody expects too much from the Equestrian States although the team is hoping to pull off at least a couple upsets during the group stage.

Cyborg Holland: The Students face a real challenge

Baseball. A word which conjures up images of far-flung places, with sunny triangles and tanned athletes pitching and batting, and otherwise doing things that Dragons don't do. However, some bored, overpaid college students with way too much time volunteered two years ago to go to the World Baseball Classic, the pinnacle of the Baseball world.

And now they find themselves ranked 25th, and playing (and winning) against some of the worlds greatest and dedicated sides. This year they'll find themselves playing against Qazox, three times champion, and currently ranked 10th; Saugeis, never champions, but runners-up twice and ranked just 3rd in the world. What started as a bunch of lazy 1st years has evolved into a fully-fledged pro sports team, and they had a job to do today.

(Following to the letter of FSC's guide to making a roster

SP: Nikolaus Sienkiewicz (19 years old, right handed)
SP: Cibor Heiman (20 years old, left handed)

Batters (I think)

Milchama is In it to Win it

To be honest that's our goal every time but this classic is shaping up to be different. Not because the team is different than last time's disappointing run, actually it's exactly the same team but because this time, for the first time in ages, soccer is becoming popular again in Milchama. After a great run from the Warriors of the soccer pitch, the national team is becoming popular. So now baseball looks to show people who is really boss in the country and quite frankly we think this could be the team to do it. Because, well, they're from Milchama and Milchama is the best baseball playing nation in the world. So they should win.

It's that simple. Warriors win.

Anyway, after that jingoistic rant here's the roster:

C: Steve Ellington
1b: Marcus Krasher
2b: David Lillit
3b: Tosoquio Florientoas
SS: Ellen Stevenson
LF: Greg Torrent
CF: Aryan Clyde
RF: James Mentchos
DH (Only on the road): Wilt Chancey

SP 1: Alexander Timothy
SP 2: Itamar Klein
SP 3: Derek Havort
SP 4: Neil Katz

CL: Lotem Coe
SU: Yonatan Gevroch
Short man: Rory Jorgenson
Middle Reliever: Davis Barringer
Long man: Eres Tipikowski
Extra: Rory Volcrom

Middle Infielder: Kenny Leibs
Super Utility man: Jackson Urianah
OF: Neri Lynch
OF: Gomez Spencer
C: Lynn Rew
IF: Devon Devinson

Milchama play all their home games without a DH.

Lineup w/o DH:
2b: David Lillit
CF: Aryan Clyde
LF: Greg Torrent
1b: Marcus Krasher
RF: James Mentchos
3b: Tosoquio Florientoas
SS: Ellen Stevenson
C: Steve Ellington
Pitcher

Lineup w/DH
2b: David Lillit
CF: Aryan Clyde
LF: Greg Torrent
1b: Marcus Krasher
DH: Wilt Chancey
RF: James Mentchos
3b: Tosoquio Florientoas
SS: Ellen Stevenson
C: Steve Ellington

You can do whatever you want to the players.

"Wait what do you mean that was exactly copied and pasted from last cup?"

"I mean it was"

"Well goddamnit!"

"Budget cuts and such"

"Still dumb you've got to be kidding me"

"Yep"

"Well then"

"Yep"

"Oh well this is what we have"

"Well send it out, hopefully nobody will notice"

"I sure hope so"

Western Cuban National Baseball Team
World Baseball Classic 23

Image

WBC 23 is set to become a memorable one for Western Cuba. Western Cuba is coming off there first WBC title and are currently also unofficial WBC champions. A lot more is happening this classic though. A new era of players are coming onto the national roster, a mix of veterans and rookies will fill the team. This classic also marks the return of the team to Havana, the city which a large part of the Invasion of Western Cuba took place in. A state of the art ballpark has been built where the former stadium was, which was destroyed in the Battle of Havana a few years ago. Being number one in the world, Western Cuba is ready to forget about the past and think bright about the future.

Name: Havana Memorial Stadium
Capacity: 48,000

The National Baseball Team has moved back to Havana, the first time since they left when Cuban-Britannian War ended. The new stadium is dedicated to those who lost there lives in the Battle of Havana and the players who lost there lives in the battle. In fact the stadium was built right across the currently being built Cuban-Britannian Memorial.

Yesopalitha National Baseball Team

Nickname: Assassins
Head Coach: Henry DeMarco, 49, Irkan City Swarm
Pitching Coach: Jerry Wise, 44, Hansbrough Turtles
Batting Coach: Obadiah Jerrouse, 42, Worthington Cougars
Home Venue: Templar Field, Freedom's Altar, Yesopalitha (Cap. 54,235)

Pitching Rotation:
Starters
1. Melody Johanson, 26, RHP, Irkan City Swarm
The "Terror" returns for her third World Baseball Classic, fresh off yet another Yesopalitha Baseball League title, her fifth in a row. With age has come experience, and with experience has come a very reliable changeup and a cutter to go with her absolutely devastating fastball. She's more dangerous than ever, and ready to shine once again on baseball's biggest stage.
2. Victor Van Cruz, 20, LHP, Hansbrough Turtles (Vampire)
The never-aging Vampire has been a reliable pitcher for the Turtles, as he isn't getting any older, and has forever to master his technique. His favorite pitch is the four-seam fastball, which he uses to great effect. He prefers to have run support, but he is a reliable pitcher even if the doesn't get any. His sinker has become a great pitch as well, and the revolution of his game continues with every subsequent season.
3. Mohamed Boisse, 21, RHP, Worthington Cougars
Beating out Aaron Dugard for the third pitching slot is Boisse of the Cougars, a new sensation that has even Johanson excited about his skills. He was the ace that led them to the Yesopalitha Baseball Series. Although he is young, and thus, not as experienced as the others, he has a talent that is unmatched. His favorite pitch is the changeup, although he can throw in the upper nineties with his fastball as well. Should be a reliable starter for this team.

Relievers
1. Synne Boileau, 22, RHP, Raxton Beavers
Boileau shined during the recent season, sporting a 1.25 ERA against left-handed batters and a 0.89 ERA against right-handed batters. She is reliable for up to three innings, and a key part of the Assassins' bullpen.
2. Zyanya Martez, 29, LHP, North Hampton Grizzlies
There is none more reliable than "Z" when it comes to getting a key out by a left-handed reliever. Her ball control has improved, meaning she issues less walks than before. She has battled a few injuries, but should be ready to go.

Closer
1. William Van Dern, 31, RHP, Irkan City Swarm
Although he looked a bit rusty during the Yesopalitha Baseball Classic, Van Dern gets the nod as the team's closer. He will be needed to come through in the clutch during this tournament, so fans and players alike are hoping that he will be his usual, strike-throwing self.

Batting Order:
Starting Nine:
1. 3B Valentin Sorin, 23, Throw-Left, Bat-Left, Worthington Cougars
Leading off will be the young whiz from the Cougars who was absolutely brilliant in the playoffs. He can hit the ball all over the field, or work the count and get a walk. His talent is enormous, and he has only started to tap into his potential.
2. C Xavier Hammond, 27, Throw-Right, Bat-Right, Irkan City Swarm Captain
Back again is the always reliable Xavier Hammond. Tasked with calling the pitches as well, the Captain of the Assassins can smack the ball all over the field as well as lay a bunt down if the need arises. He will always remain a key cog of this team, and the Assassins will be hard pressed to find a replacement when he retires.
3. LF Martin Bassin, 24, Throw-Left, Bat-Right, Hansbrough Turtles
Bassin gets the #3 spot, but won't be expected to get on base very often. His specialty are high fly balls that can advance a runner easily. Nicknamed "Sacrifice Fly Machine", his batting will be key to the Assassins' strategy in key situations.
4. SS Katherine Smathers, 29, Throw-Right, Bat-Switch, Irkan City Swarm
What a player Smathers is. She can hit from both sides of the plate, make double plays seem easy, and most of all, lead by example. Although she plays in a male-dominated league, she has made her presence felt, and with Melody Johanson and Zyanya Martez, made it apparent that without a few key women, the league wouldn't even be half of what it is now. She has the power to hit home runs, so expect a few possible grand slams out of this woman.
5. 1B Mathéo Antin, 25, Throw-Right, Bat-Right, Xavier Hammerheads
The Hammerheads turned a few heads this season by finishing in eighth place after a season in which they finished fifteenth. Though they were swept by the Swarm in the first round, perhaps they are headed the right direction. A big part of the turnaround was Antin, who is a brilliant fielder and an average batter. Not much will be expected of him in the batting order as long as he can make routine plays at first base that lead to easy outs for the Assassins' highly defensive game.
6. CF Claire Boisclair, 22, Throw-Left, Bat-Left, New Denal-Ithorn Warriors
Boisclair wasn't even in the league before the previous season, but wowed both teammates and competitors alike with her athleticism, being an absolute ball magnet out in center field for the Warriors. She strikes out a bit too often, but that should be fixed with enough experience in the pitcher-heavy Yesopalithan league. She has a tendency to pull the ball to left field, but gets enough hits to sneak by.
7. 2B Mathilde Leuck, 24, Throw-Right, Bat-Right, Worthington Cougars
Leuck is a raw batting prospect that experts can't figure out. Some games, he can hit balls with enough power to get them out of the park. Other games, he strikes out three times. Despite the lack of consistency, he's worth a shot because of what he might do. A total wild card, the fact that the Assassins are willing to take this gamble means that they are confident enough in other players.
8. RF Tyler Lundsvig, 30, Throw-Left, Bat-Right, Hansbrough Turtles
Although he's starting to get along in age, Lundsvig's hitting has only gotten better. He's gotten more patient while waiting for the right pitch, and is also very good at stealing bases. Fielding is his specialty, however, averaging fewer than five errors a year.
9. Whomever is Pitching (At home)

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Harry Wittnebey (Arlington Aurora). A short-haired man who can constantly be found pacing the dugout. Much more likely to bring someone off the bench than to ever sit on it himself.

Zebra policy abandons the traditional idea of a bullpen. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). They'll start the group stage games in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).

Camwood's finest sluggers and such are making their way to baseball's biggest stage: The World Baseball Classic. Despite the Camian Elite League's difficulties, there are still many stars to shine. That is why all of the players on the 25 man roster are unattached and are awaiting the Super Draft to kick of the first ever SLB (Super League Baseball) season.

After their stunning defeat at the hands of Darmen in WBC 22, the LBA decided to shake up the team somewhat, gone are Jonathan Short and Wally Newton; only Short will stay on in a coaching role. Eight players from the teams past will not be back this time around. Frank Thompson was not retained as manager, as Brianna Bruce was promoted into the coaching role. Well known for her antics as a star pitcher during the Newmanistani dynasty, she has already brought a fresh outlook to the Jays, with a title in WBC 20 (OOC: apologies if that's incorrect), and masterful, if not controversial, pitching in WBC 22. When announced as the new manager, Bruce gave three priorities for this Classic: "make the playoffs, win the title, and beanball the hell out of the Lesbians. (OOC: Those that remember Newmanistan know where she is coming from with that.)"

Granted, it was not said by anyone whether there was a bounty on ANY team's players, much less Cassadaigua's players. The LBA did make a statement that it did not condone either her comments or the threat of beanballs. Game one of the Blue Jays' quest for their second ever title begins tonight as they host Civil Citizenry.

WBC 23 Preview

Here's what the schedule looks like...

MD1: vs Beldonia
MD2: vs Zwangzug
MD3: @ Deandean98
MD4: vs The Better Fire Nation
MD5: @ Prostitutlia
MD6: @ Beldonia
MD7: @ Zwangzug
MD8: vs Deandean98
MD9: @ The Better Fire Nation
MD10: vs Prostitutlia

Group 5 is headlined by Zwangzug, the second ranked team in the world. Thrilledge, ranked sixteenth in predicted to finish second in the group behind the zebras. The other two ranked teams in the group are Deandean98 who is ranked 42nd and Beldonia who is ranked 88th. The Better Fire Nation and Prostitutlia come into WBC 23 unranked but are ready to burst onto the scene. As stated before, the Dreads look like they are headed for a second place finish but expect them to give Zwangzug are run for their money. Ryan Raymond, reliable as always, is the ace of the Thrilledge staff and he looks to mow down batters like he has since he joined the national roster. Shortstop Duncan Armstrong has made a splash on the domestic scene and hopes to continue his success internationally. The young gun hit.323 with 117 RBIs and 109 runs scored last year for Blastings City. New closer Vance Ashwood has some big shoes to fill with the international retirement of Grant McFlyer. McFlyer, a staple of the bullpen called it quits and manager Matthew Haering showed faith in the 23 year old by naming him to new closer. He has a fastball that tops out at 98 miles per hour along with a quality slider and a filthy split-finger pitch. Thrilledge's first game is against Beldonia as they start the tournament at home. Raymond will take the hill for the Dreads and he will go up against what looks like Mark Bellanger for the Beldonians.

6 Rangers to ride off into the sunset after Classic

Another World Baseball Classic is about to begin, and for a few players on the national roster, it will certainly be the last. Aging veterans Franklin Nopro, Kelvin Lane, Terry Kazmierczak, Antonio Silva, Nikolas Siekert, and Aaron Dairon have made it known that they will retire from international duty after this Classic is over, citing a time to move on and let the younger generation continue the Ranger tradition. "It's a young players game," said ace pitcher Nopro. "and while we all wish we could be playing forever, there comes a time when you can't get up and go like you used to. I know I don't want to admit it, but it's true." "We all will still go out their and play to the best of our abilities, like we always have," added Dairon. All these players have had great careers on the international stage.

  • Nopro, during his 4 Classic on the Rangers' staff, accumulated a 10-3 record, 2.98 ERA and 88 strikeouts.
  • Kelvin Lane, over that same stretch, had a 7-3 record, 3.72 ERA and 61 K's.
  • With 23 saves in 25 attempts and 33 K's in the last 4 Classics, Terry Kazmierczak has been the shut down closer the Rangers needed over these years.
  • Batting-wise, Silva didn't hit his stride until the previous Classic, but overall a .316 average with 3 home runs and 13 RBIs earned him a solid place on the Finals team.
  • While Nikolas Siekert has been on the team since WBC 20, his contact hitting has been ever present within the team, batting .301 lifetime and having the lowest strikeouts taken on average.
  • And finally, Aaron Dairon has been a silent power hitter, being in the shadows of the greats like Jacques Benoit, Shawn Hamilton, and Dick Robinson. Having been with the team since WBC 19, he has brought the bottom of the lineup to light, usually batting 7th or 8th, and batting .326 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs

With these icons of Saugeais baseball history about to take the field for the last time, the crew here at Talkin' Baseball on the Saugeais Sports News Network wish them all the best of luck in the coming World Baseball Classic.

Loss in WBC23
Luziyca (LUZY) 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 3
Milchama (MILC) 0 0 2 1 0 0 1 0 X 4

QAZOX - Today, in the match against Milchama, Luziyca lost, 3 to 4. In the first inning, Eris Smirnov gave himself a home run. However, the pony Groundhog got onto first base, before Abraham Idimof struck out. Kerol and Alexander struck, thereby giving Milchama a turn. Then, we entered our losing streak, for in the third inning, a batter got two home runs, one for the player on the base, and one for himself (obviously). On the fourth inning, the next player got a home run, and on the seventh inning, Luziyca had Alexander Chikmurdof getting Luziyca a home run, but Shelley got an out, adding it to the total, thereby giving a batter for Milchama to win. Finally, on the ninth inning, Alyson Felix batted, and gave HERSELF a home run, before due to the idiocy that is baseball rules, caused Milchama to defeat Luziyca, 4 to 3.

When asked, the coach, George Seminol said, "It is only our first game, after all. We had lost in the Beach Football tournament, compared to last year when we had an AMAZING performance to such a point we were very CLOSE to win. I do honestly hope that we can win this tourney, and thereby bringing Luziyca to the sporting world with the respect it deserves, just like any freedom-loving nation. Why would we compete in London 2012 otherwise, eh? Eh? EH!?"

Groundhog said, "Admittedly, I was sad, but I managed to get to third base when some idiotic player (Ferret) gave the third out. Ugh. I wish, that we will win tomorrow's match! GO LUZIYCA!"

Maklohi Vai's WBC Debut

Postby Maklohi Vai » Mon Aug 13, 2012 10:54 pm

Maklohi Vai (MAKV) 2
The Kytler Peninsulae (TKYP) 1

Maklohi Vai's first ever WBC game was a success. The Lumai's Ratai Moi went 7 strong innings to earn the win. He recorded 7 strikeouts on the day to go with 5 hits, 1 earned run, and no walks or hit batsmen. Rimai Lomukiwo pitched a perfect 8th, and Maruamo Riwara closed out with a save, along with some defensive help on a double play.

Maklohi Vai scoring:
2nd inning: With Arnao having hit a leadoff double to left, catcher Moalna'akai Lai stepped up to the plate, and after fouling two pitches off, he blooped a hit into shallow right center. Arnao read the ball perfectly, and was able to score just ahead of the tag at home.
6th inning: Cleanup hitter Mae'ao recorded his second hit of the night with a 405 foot homer to right center. From his lefty stance, Mae'ao jumped on a high mistake pitch and blasted it on a fairly straight line right into the stands.
"For the glory of our people, we govern our nation freely. For the glory of Polynesia, we help and strengthen our friends. For the glory of the earth, we do not destroy what it has bestowed upon us."

Puma's start the tournament off with a victory!

As an unranked team the Puma's have quite a lot of work cut out for them to perform well and to rank as highly as they can to grab a good position in the rankings at the end of this cup. The team has been drawn into a group with four other high ranking teams and there is only one other unranked team in the tenth group, while the Puma's chances of advancing are slim after the last match they have show they are capable of delivering a solid performance on their first time playing internationally.

On the first match day the puma's were scheduled to play against a fellow unranked team from Licentiapacisterra, one of our neighboring nations from the same region as Rustika. As this was the first time the Puma's played against another international team there was a lot of speculation as to which of these two underdogs would come out on top. After the first two innings in which the Puma's were on the offensive the Rustik team was already four points ahead of Licentiapacisterra. Gradually Licentiapacisterra's team got more point's but it was no match for the eight points that the Rustik team had scored by the last inning, and at the end of the match the score was 8-3.

The last match saw exemplary performances from Chelsey Baxster who was responsible for preventing Licentiapacisterra from scoring throughout the first six innings, it certainly isn't a coincidence that when he was replaced by Cameron Licentiapacisterra scored their first two runs. The first two of Licentiapacisterra's contact hitters managed to get by Chelsey, but the alert infielders prevented them from moving past first and second, and the rest of the batters all couldn't manage to hit Chelsey's dreaded curve balls. Laurence Bounty also deserves an honorable mention, in the first inning the Rustik batters were very successful and the first three managed to each get to a base, though Dumilo Cuci was declared out as he tried to run to second base and the ball got their first. With one man on third and one man on first base Laurence stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, brining all three of them around the diamond and back to the home plate, immediately starting the game off to a lively inning.

Afterwards the next inning was not as successful for the Puma's the first batter, Chelsey Baxter got to walk to first base, and successfully stole second. Managing to get to third as Eric Rodgers hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Chelsey to get to third, and as Robin Patterson sprinted to first, then second base after hitting a good line drive toward the Short Stop who just came shy of catching it. Though Robin advanced to second, Chelsey got to home and scored the inning's only run. Robin was later declared out as the man at third base tagged him.

In the last inning there was no spectacular home run like in the first, but slowly one by one Chelsey Baxster, Eric Rodgers, Robin Patterson and Maron Fiorani all scored runs thanks to a skillful combination of steals, a sacrifice bunt by Dumilo Cuci and a powerful swing by Laurence Bounty. Though Laurence was soon forced out, and Lombarto then struck out, brining that inning to an end for the Pumas.

It'll be interesting to see who walks off victorious in the Puma's next match, while the Rustik team played very well today, Qazox's team is ranked higher, and has more experience than the Pumas. Though if the Rustikans go onto the field with the same mindset and determination as the last match they just might win it. Heres to hoping they win.
