Journal of Elisedd Mikkel (of the Duchy of Julthwaite) - Day Two

Okay, so it might not be the next day after the first entry that I am writing this, but so much has happened in so little time that it was only now that I got the chance to put quill to parchment. Two matches in rapid succession for Urumgard saw them lose one match and win one in that order. Starting with the first game, we were awful. Against a team I've never heard of (Yorobia?), we went two goals down before we lost by the snitch. Okay, so maybe I'm being a bit harsh on both teams, but you'd expect the reigning champions to come out fighting against a new competitor wouldn't you? But to start with it looked like Urumgard were only going to pile on the pressure when they were forced to.

Game One

The game started off with both teams trading goals, never getting more than two hoop's advantage at a time. However, it was Yorobia who clearly were forcing the issue on Urumgard, with the champions only going ahead on two occasions in the entire match! With Sun Fry and Lightning nabbing five goals each, it was up to Cheesecake (?) to get the remaining three of the their tally. Urumgard's goals came from Albert, with six, Siegfred, with three, and Hans with two. But it was Yorobia who had the two goal's lead and with their catching of the snitch, courtesy of Glitter gave them the one-hundred and seventy points victory.

It wasn't as if Urumgard played badly either. The beaters played well, placing shots well at the opposing chasers. Sven played a decent game in front of the hoops. It was the attacking might of Urumgard that failed to switch on in this match, with neither chasers nor seeker playing at their best. At least no injuries came to our players in this match, but we were really hoping at this point that they would be fired up for the next game...

Game Two

Urumgard went back to their more risky, but possibly successful strategy of playing for the snitch, utilised to great effect in the last edition of the World Cup. Camerania were two goals ahead, but with both chasers and seeker playing much better here than against Yorobia, it was much easier for the defenders to restrain the scoreline enough for a snitch victory. Albert only scored two goals himself, with Siegfred nabbing the remainder and Hans serving much more as a defensive option and playmaker than he has done before. Camerania were starved of possession of the quaffle for much of the match but it is inevitable that when your entire team is aimed at aiding the seeker that you are going to concede some goals. Urumgard matched Camerania in the offensive battle though, scoring only two less goals, with the beaters also making their seeker's job a nightmare.

With the score at 70-90 to Camerania, it was clear that despite this figure, Urumgard had the advantage with Edmund the seeker remaining free to do as he wished. With a relatively easy catch, aided greatly by the great beating of Aergad and Ludvig who halted the opposition's seeker and chasers time and time again, Urumgard secured a victory of and 130-point margin. A dominant performance and a well-pleased Urumgardi crowd in the stadium today. Job well done lads!

OOC: This RP is based on the Starblaydi Wizarding world's reaction to Wight's arrival in AO RP.

Cups, Coins, Staffs and Swords.

These were the suits of a Starblaydi deck of cards. Whether you were playing Poker, Thousand, Patience or Snap, this was the deck you used, those of the Minor Arcana. For someone practising Divination, such as Jennifer Havaland, these were for simple, easy and everyday questions that you might decide upon quite happily on your own, or with the toss of a coin. No destiny-calling, fate-altering and life-changing questions like you saw in the movies where they only use the Major Arcana and every card is either 'Death' or 'The Lovers' for plot purposes.

For Jennifer, her morning routine included a basic Divination exercise in the same manner as her morning cup of tea (the nation's favourite, of course, the strong Tiby's Reviver), glancing at the opnions on the latest Quidditch matches in Catch! and paying the owls who had brought her any important post. In short, she was not looking into the secrets of the universe. By its very definition, 'Minor Arcana' means 'Lesser Secrets', after all.

Two of Swords

An interesting start, thought Jennifer, with tension or decisions ahead. The first card was no basis to divine any intentions for, it was the following cards that would take her down the route of understanding.

Knight of Staffs

Change is coming. A decision, or an event, that will bring change to... something. That would hopefully be answered by her next card.

Nine of Swords

Nightmares. This wasn't good, not good at all. Tense, changing nightmares? Something was going very, very wrong. With three cards till left to draw and interpret, Jennifer didn't notice but her heartbeat was now racing.

Ten of Swords

Another Sword? What on earth was going on here? An ending was coming and, based on the number of Swords cards she'd drawn, it would be an ending with misery, conflict and death. Not the sort of reading you wanted over your morning cup of tea, but as ever Jennifer was the conduit for the message, and you can't help the message being what it was.

Five of Cups

Loss, disappointment, conflict and, most likely, death. What on earth was bringing her towards this conclusion? Jennifer was sweating now, terrified of what she might discover. The nature of the universe was not one to be trifled with, and this message was coming through loud and clear. One card was left. She almost couldn't bear to draw the final card.

Five of Coins

Poverty, loss of faith, belongings, family and intent. This was all too much - every single card pointed to something absolutely awful. And in this order? Something major was about to happen. Something so devastating that ordinary life was going to be turned upside-down by it. Now, this could be her house falling down or a nuclear war, because her cards were so vague. This needed a proper divination, with the entire Major Arcana at her disposal. This needed time and effort and magic in great detail, but she didn't have the time. There was Matchday Two of the Quidditch World Cup to get to, and the one game, one win Starblaydia had to take on the one game, one loss Maron. A final, brief training session before the game itself.

Jennifer could barely concentrate, on either the training or the match itself. She was too distracted to even think that it would have to be all up to Xan to win the game for them. Her passing was off, her shots saved... there were more important things to worry about than a silly little game.

I created the standings tables for my own use but figured that I'd post them for y'all. The established order of tiebreakers that I use is H2H, Point Differential, Points For. Next to each score I have added what the score prior to the catching of the 150-point snitch. The team capturing the snitch is noted by an asterisk. Match summaries are based on inferences from any posted RPs. Should anyone wish to change their scorers, please tell me via TG.

Falcania 220, Equestrian States 20

Summary: The Equestrian States' international debut was a huge disappointment for most fans. Overall, the team failed to really compete with a high-powered offense and could not overcome defensive problems either. The Equestrians only scored twice while committing three fouls. Falcania players didn't fail to take advantage of this, and scored after a couple of those fouls. If the Equestrian States wishes to advance in the Cup, they will have to step up their game first.

Scoring:
00:00:53 - Falcania Tormas Mairkl (Staevi Palarp)

Updated the tables and added a few new notes. The established order of tiebreakers that I use is H2H, Point Differential, Points For. Next to each score I have added what the score prior to the catching of the 150-point snitch. The team capturing the snitch is noted by an asterisk. Only for the Krytenia/Adun game can the snitch-catching team not be determined via the final score. Match summaries are based on inferences from any posted RPs. Should anyone wish to change their scorers, please tell me via TG.

Edit: To clarify, in my match summaries the times given are in a HH:MM:SS format. I do not anticipate RPing multiple day matches unless the score is exceptionally high.

Equestrian States 190, Warkus 50

Summary: Another day and a second win for the Equestrian States, who defeated Warkus 190-50 in a close match. Although the team fell behind in the game, the Equestrians battled their way back into the match before Farsight ended it by catching the snitch while flying nearly vertical. However, while most players stopped to watch Farsight capture the snitch, Warkus's Daraaka Williams took the quaffle and scored seconds before the end of the match, temporarily giving Warkus a 50-40 lead. The Equestrians will next face struggling Soviet Canuckistan before finishing the group stage against winless Free South Califas.

I've already played Yorobia once before. I noticed this mistake when you posted the original group schedules that I played Yorobia twice but don't play team 4 (The Babbage Islands) at all by the posted schedule. However I did not bring it up at the time as I thought it must have been a typo.

Great work, Equestrians! Query: do the time codes refer to hour:minute:second or day:hour:minute? It could be either in Quidditch!

Not to sound harsh here but I'm not sure that I am comfortable with some of the things that have happened in this tournament. I mean, a long delay with a virus, of course not your fault, but still annoying. Then there are the wiped rankings which I must admit to having some reservations about. Poor scheduling that now has to be rectified. And finally, a lack of group tables still! Admittedly as the reigning champion I might be more keen to see things run smoothly than some of the new competitors and if this makes me seem petulant or anything I apologise.

(puts on complaining hat)

Licentiapacisterra, please fix the results as needed, and post tables... It is your duty as host.

Laure's Diary - After TBI

I don't know what is wrong with my team, but we were falling behind once again before I glimpsed the snitch. After a little hair-spin dive, and jostling for position with the other team's Seeker, I managed to grab the snitch, and save our team again. But for how many times more can I do this? I don't know. It's getting a bit worrisome, how the Chasers and Keeper on this team are not doing so well.

I wish I knew what is keeping them from performing their peak capacity. We need them, it is for certain. They can't rely on me to catch the snitch every time. Sure, I'll try - it is my job after all - but I am still only human.

Hopefully they'll snap out of their funk. Otherwise, chasing for this title will be as futile as building sand castles in the path of an incoming wave.

Perhaps I am worrying too much. Perhaps not...

"High Men! Hiiiiigh Meeeen!" There was cheering tonight. Three wins was practically unheard of for the entirety of Falcanian international sporting.

Sheriden, Staevi and Tormas were dancing a small jig borne of their 80-point streak towards the end of the game. It had been pretty neck-and-neck until the scores were 50-40, but then they'd pulled something special out of the hat.

Amanta had caught three snitches in three games, though, and was quietly but happily drinking herself into a stupor.

Right, my plan is to rescore Matchday 3 today, at the planned cutoff time. Matchdays 4 and 5 will be moved back to Wednesday and Thursday respectively, and the knockout stages will continue as planned on Friday, as Thursday was planned as an offday anyway. Any RPs posted about the previous results shall be counted towards the new results. If anybpdy else wishes to complain about the cock-ups, please do it by TG to me so as not to clog up the signup thread.

Again, apologies.

"What in blazes?"

"Yeah, it happened."

"But we didn't activate it!"

"I know, and we still lost."

"Bummer, that didn't work out well."

"Didn't work out well? We just went back in time! For no reason!"

"Yes, Infinite has told me how it is very unstable. It could rip a void in this mountain."

"What!? Rip a void?!"

"Yep. We need to stop harvesting the energy."

"I guess you're right. It just sucks how we can't cheat our way to victory."

"Meh, who cares? As long as we get better, we could have a real chance next time!"

"You have a point. I guess it's better to improve our game than use an inter-dimensional portal and still be rubbish."

Laure's Diary

So, Urumgard and Camerania are left in the teams left to be played in the group stage. Camerania are doing just fine, with two wins and one loss, while defending champion Urumgard is up against the wall with a 1-2 record. The fact that Urumgard aren't doing so well, though, may be what makes them more dangerous than ever - every game counts for them from now on, so they can't offer to have any more slip-ups.

For certain, I will need my team to actually score some points in the games to come. They can't count one me catching the snitch to save them every game. I stated this to the Ile-Mann twins and Xanadou, and they agreed with me, but stated that they weren't sure what was wrong with them.

The game against Camerania will make the game against Urumgard change its significance. If we defeat Camerania, the chances of us winning our Group is very high, so we can relax a bit. If we don't defeat Camerania, then we must defeat Urumgard to advance.

Can I please get some points off of my Chasers? That'll make things easier, wouldn't it?

Ah. I should probably stop ranting and get some more practice in...

"So we finally won a match."

"I know i was there."

"Really were you. For once you decided to show up mentally to a game."

"Shut up."

"Seriously dude you have been nothing but disgraceful this whole year. Get your head in the game. Everyone else is doing just fine, but our seeker, the most important member, can't even catch a cold out there."

"But i did catch a cold."

"OMG. You are just stupid. Play the fricking game. Wake the hell up."

"OR how about you guys just score more goals."

"We are trying cause we know you suck right now."

"Oh right."

"Dude get your head in the game."

"Too much drinking."

"Murrrgh."

The team were holding their heads after an embarrassing performance. Amanta Rish was lying, face down, on the hotel room floor.

"We need to wake her up, you know."

"Yeah... we probably should. We only have one more match to make it count."

"Two, dear."

Spitfire and Hothead sat together in the cloud transport that was serving as their home throughout the cup. Having just finished beating Warkus, the pair had felt a sense of deja vu throughout their match. "It's almost as if we had already played them," Hothead explained, "none of their 'trick' plays worked at all."

Spitfire's face was serious as he responded. "I agree. Spear also told me that he sensed a magical spell had been used recently by all of them."

"Weird, but I suppose that would be more common in a tournament like this. I mean, aren't all these humans supposed to be magicians like ours?"

"Yup. And they're supposed to be among the best too."

"Interesting. I wonder what they think of our team..."

Rolling his eyes, Spifire disgustedly spat out his reply. "Going off the response of most humans not familiar with sapient Ponies, probably the usual speciesist crap." Shifting to a mocking voice, the yellow Pegasus continued, "Oh, they're just horses, they don't know anything. How do they even do anything? They don't have hands! They have weird tatoos on their flanks -," realizing her mistake in typical Human vocabulary, "-oh right! Humans call them asses! I mean, could they possibly use a more speciesist slur than that!"

Hothead nodded in silent agreement but frowned at the generalization. "Come on Spitfire, not all Humans are like that! Just look at Tryenna, Greg, or any other Human from the Pony Lands! Most, if not all of them respect us for our abilities and don't act like that at all."

"But that's just it," Spitfire responded quickly, "they're from the Pony Lands! Tryenna was born and raised in Ponyville, for the Regal Sisters'1 sakes! Of course, they're going to accept us, because of they didn't they wouldn't stay in the country, much less the region."

Hothead shrugged as he tried to end the charged conversation. "Whatever brony, I'm just saying don't go making generalizations based on a few sour encounters. It's foalish2 and rather speciesist by itself."

The two Pegasai then sat quietly for a moment, staring hard at each other. Spitfire finally broke his glare and shrugged, "Fine. Let's talk about something else."

Hothead motioned with one of his hooves for Spitfire to continue, "Like..."

"I dunno. How 'bout the mares on the team?"

Hothead glared again at Spitfire, his message made very clear by the sharp frown and narrowed eyes.

Spitfire grinned, "Just messing with you, brony. I gotta go see Sweeper, talk to ya later."

"See ya," said Hothead, a small smile emerging from his previously harsh expression.

Spitfire leaped up, spread his wings and shot out of the window, leaving Hothead's line of sight in just a couple seconds. The remaining, burgundy Pegasus sighed as he trotted over to his bunk to catch up on his sleep. Quidditch was a hard sport to play for extended periods of time, especially when you had to take into account the fatigue in his wings.

- The two Alicorn deities of the Ponyist religion (majority religion in the Equestrian States). Specifically, the sister Princesses Celestia (Goddess of the Sun, Ruler of Magical Equestria) and Luna (Goddess of the Moon, Ruler of Princess Luna).
2. Foalish - The Pony pun for the words 'foolish' and/or 'childish'.

(ooc: whatever, the post was half-done anyway)

"Another match, and yet again Rokudan has to decide it all for us. Poor guy, if only we were good enough we wouldn't have to push him so far.", thinks Vlitra, as she makes a vigil next to the Daineri seeker's bed. Since she was grounded while everyone else went to investigate, she decided to take care of him.

...

The pristine white robes did little to conceal the three witches walking out in the night. They approached the large man with a bright green hairdo, who seemed busy preparing a concoction in a small cauldron on the street.

"It's obvious now. The mark is right above the stadium, so they must be close."

"But where? We combed every inch of this place and we found no trace of them."

"Come here.", said the man. He put a lid on the cauldron and waved it around, as wafts of gray smoke came out of it. Small green lights flashed around the smoke, and eventually coalesced, all floating around a specific direction. "The spirits are alarmed. This is a human sacrifice spell", he says.

"Human sacrifice... same old plan?"

"Yeah, same old. They're trying to ressurect their old master again. And the Quidditch field, or somewhere very close to it, is the sacrificial ground..." She pauses for a second and then raises her finger in an "eureka" pose. She writes a letter to the magical authorities of the country, which is immediately grabbed by her pet and whizzed away.

Laure's Diary - After Camerania
210-110, Yesopalitha. I suppose we pulled another win out of our hat of magic tricks. It was 60-110 when I caught the snitch, which I suppose is better than the team's been playing lately. Xanadou had an off day, but he was ready to go and watch film at the end of it, so I guess he knows that he needs to get working on his keeping skills.

This Group has been frankly dominated by us. We sit in first place with a 4-0 record, and no team even has a prayer of catching us. It's been a pretty darn good performance, mostly because, well, I guess I'll have to admit... Me.

It does kind of keep me in suspense, though. What if I run into a team that has a seeker who is as good as me, if not better?
